Rosewood & Ivory is a duo featuring clarinet artist Mick Wilson
and keyboardist Connie Smith. They have been playing together since 2006 and recently recorded their first album, “Jazzin’ Around.” The duo boasts a large, jazz-based repertoire that also includes folk music from around the world, light classical, Celtic and old-time American music. They perform regularly across the Western Slope for parties and special events.

Saxophonics Quartet 10:00 | stage | saxophones
Saxophonics is a saxophone quartet consisting of members of the Montrose Community Band. The quartet began in 2005 and today’s quartet consists of Toby King on soprano and alto sax, Yvonne McChesney on alto sax, Jim Pettengill on tenor sax, and Jim Gibson on baritone sax. The group plays a variety of music including jazz, classical, rock, funk, ragtime and movie themes. The group entertains at the Montrose Community Band’s four quarterly concerts at the Montrose Pavilion.

Ula Kirkman has been playing the accordion for 50 years and has played professionally for 10 of those years. Kirkman loves performing for retirement homes and senior centers, especially in the Colorado and Utah regions. You’ll see why she is our most requested entertainer.

War-era music. Once a warm-up artist for Billy Graham, Agajanian has toured with many performers and has played in many diverse venues all over the U.S. and Canada. He has played at many churches, Disneyland, Knott’s Berry Farm, the Las Vegas Golden Nugget, the Grand Ole Opry and in Branson, Missouri. He has lived in Grand Junction for over 20 years.

young age, she took voice, piano, violin and pipe organ lessons for a number of years. She has entertained at local schools, churches, hotels and many other venues from Las Vegas and Arizona to Colorado. She loves to entertain and enjoys reaching out and touching people’s hearts through music. She especially enjoys playing for dementia and Alzheimer’s patients, as she believes that music is the only universal language that everyone can understand. Dunfee’s playing is versatile. She is in tune and interactive with her audience. She plays everything from Broadway tunes and ragtime to modern music.

W
hether it be singing, dancing, exercising, playing games and sports, taking trips, watching movies, eating, spending time with friends or making new ones, the Montrose Pavilion Senior Center is the place to be for seniors. September is National Senior Center Month. About 100 people attended the Montrose Senior Center’s first meeting on February 14, 1973. It was hosted as an open house at the Montrose Lions Clubhouse. The first meal was served in the courthouse and in 1974, there were 110 meals served at noon five days a week for 50 cents a meal or whatever a senior could afford. Many citizens worked with the city and county to open up a senior center in Montrose. Lavon (Blondie) Campbell, 87, and Gayle Clarke-Watford, over 80, have volunteered at the senior center for years. “[The senior center] gives seniors an opportunity to have a good balanced meal, social contact, exercise and access to videos, books and puzzles,” Campbell said. The Montrose Recreation District works with the senior center by providing an activity coordinator to plan events and outings. In addition to on-site activities, such as computer classes, arts and crafts, dances and exercise, participants also go on hikes and day trips. “A lot of people think that a senior center is where old people go when they have nothing to do,” ClarkeWatford said. “But it is actually a very social place.” The 10,000 square-foot senior center is a good resource for seniors looking for friendship and nutritious meals. The senior center serves about 100 meals per day, five days a week, at a cost of $4 to seniors age 60 and older and $6.75 for guests under 60. Anyone interested in receiving meals can contact the senior center.
Volunteers are an integral part of the senior center. They raise funds for projects and equipment, answer questions and encourage participation. Campbell said those wishing to volunteer can just step up and offer their services. “We need 13 or 14 volunteers for the luncheon every day,” ClarkeWatford said. “They set up the dining room, work the front desk and help serve food. Without volunteers, we would have folded up a long time ago.” For Campbell and Clarke-Watford, the people are the most interesting thing about helping at the senior center. “Seniors have lived interesting lives, are educated and have had wonderful experiences,” ClarkeWatford said. “We get to talk with them, visit with them and learn from them.” Campbell said that many seniors who go to the senior center are widows or widowers with no family. “This gives them the opportunity to be with other people,” she said. “We get to share with them, work to make their day better, answer questions and give them the personal contact they need. Seniors can come in, introduce themselves and express their wishes. We work to match their wishes with an activity. We walk with them.” The senior center is located at 1800 Pavilion Drive and is open 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
