Woodstock helped hippies live longer, science says

“S

cience says concerts can help you live longer.”

This was the headline of an article that Kevin, our publisher, forwarded to me recently.

“If that’s the case, you’re going to live forever,” he said, referring to the fact that I’ve seen well over 250 bands live.

The article cites a study that found that seeing live music regularly can play a significant role in boosting one’s self-esteem, closeness to others and mental stimulation, thereby increasing life expectancy by almost a decade.

Compared to other happiness-promoting activities they studied, such as yoga and dog walking, going to concerts was a clear winner, reportedly increasing participants’ happiness by 21 percent.

That explains why, 50 years ago, some 500,000 music fans gathered at Woodstock to listen to some of rock ‘n’ roll’s top artists of the day. Not only was the music euphoric, but this historic event also gave them respite from the political and socioeconomic turmoil the country was going through at the time.

Sure, the drugs probably helped with that, too, but even

with that kind of crowd, there were only two fatalities, and neither was a result of violence.

As far as I’m concerned, the study’s findings are well supported: Music is good for the soul, and live music takes it to the next level. What better excuse to check out some local bands around town?

By Melanie Wiseman. Additional reporting by Cloie Sandlin hen Pat Martin listed her spare room on Airbnb seven years ago, it was one of only three in the area. Now there are 300, an example of the online hospitality service’s increasing popularity.

The extra bed in her Fruitvale home rents for a modest $45 per night year-round and comes with a gourmet breakfast she cooks herself. Recognized on Airbnb by the name, “Southwest Ambiance and Comfort,” Martin’s home showcases her southwestern-style hospitality, which she describes in a way that entices guests to book with her for roughly 150 nights out of the year.

“Staying with [me] is like staying with a favorite relative—a relative who has been a ranch hand, trail

rider, cowboy poet and author, and who lives the Western lifestyle,” her listing reads.

While Martin signed up with Airbnb out of financial necessity, she’s also gained worldwide friendships that she wouldn’t trade for anything.

“I always give my guests a hug when they leave. No matter how old they are, I tell them they’re all my kids now,” said Martin. “It used to be all millennials, but now seniors are getting onboard, too.”

STRETCHING SAVINGS Airbnb is a burgeoning marketplace of lodging experiences designed for travelers of all ages.

Not only has it opened up new ways to travel, but it’s also become an important earning opportunity for seniors looking to stretch their

savings into retirement.

According to AARP, the majority of Americans over age 60 want to age in place by remaining in their current home. A global survey of Airbnb hosts found that close to half of those aged 60 and older say that Airbnb has helped them afford to stay in their homes, and 41 percent say they rely on the income to make ends meet.

Jude Conn planned to live out her retirement in a tiny house on her 5.5-acre property by the river in Orchard City. When she realized it couldn’t be her primary residence, she built another house and rented out her tiny house as an Airbnb.

“I didn’t save a lot of money for retirement,” said Conn, 59. “[Renting via Airbnb] will easily provide half of my income going forward, and for that, I’m really thankful.”

In 2013, Anna and Jim Goetz put a second mortgage on their home and bought an investment property near Fort Lauderdale, which their son, Michael, rents from them.

Three years later, Anna suggested posting the property on Airbnb. com.

“I thought, how cool would it be to Airbnb the Florida property when Michael comes home for Christmas?” she said.

With their son’s approval, the listing went live and someone reserved the property for all five days. Michael had just enough time to put away his underwear, lock his important documents in the garage and fly home.

“We made $800, and that was the beginning of this huge process,” said Anna.

Reservations have poured in

COVER STORY since that first day, with guests leaving rave reviews. Now when guests arrive, Michael moves into a remodeled shed in the backyard.

After witnessing the success of renting out their Florida property, Anna was ready to explore the possibility of listing their home in Grand Junction. Her husband, Jim, on the other hand, was less enthusiastic about renting their home to strangers.

“I didn’t want a bunch of weirdos in my house going through my stuff, sitting on my swing or in my hot tub,” Jim said. “Then I began to realize that this place brings me so much joy—why not share some of that joy with others?”

Playing host is one of the things Conn loves most about sharing her home.

“I’m a mom, and it gives me deep pleasure for me to feel like I’m providing an experience my guests can enjoy,” she said.

HOUSE HOPPERS The Goetzes’ Grand Junction home rents 40 percent of the time.

College graduations, fairs, festivals, foreign and business travelers, wedding parties and bikers keep them hopping between residences.

They stayed with local family members before buying a small camper to retreat to while their house was occupied. Last year, they invested in a 725-square foot home in the Las Colonias area for a more comfortable respite. Remodeled and cute as a button, this small house also has the potential to become an Airbnb in the future.

“Our situation may be unique because we live in the home we rent out, where other people use a second home where they don’t have to move or juggle every guest,” said Jim. “But we have it figured out: I have a box that I throw my stuff in and just go.”

Any available space can work as an Airbnb, from a shared living room to a second home and everything in between. Guests like to have the option of having entire

houses to themselves, private rooms with a separate entrance or shared common spaces, or even a couch in a shared room.

Anna and Jim Goetz are Airbnb Superhosts, which means that 90 percent of their guests have given them five-star reviews.

SUPERHOST STATUS Many travelers are shying away from traditional accommodations and turning to Airbnb as they look for lodging that provides greater access to unique sights, experiences and communities.

Conn’s cozy tiny house, listed on Airbnb as “The Turquoise Door,” provides a special experience all on its own.

“I found a turquoise door at a store in Delta that I just loved, so I set it outside of the house,” she said.

She’s building a second tiny home that will be called, “The Green Fish,” a tribute to the 12foot sculpture that will be posted outside.

Martin, Conn and the Goetzes are Superhosts, meaning that 90 percent of their guests have given them five-star reviews.

“People leave our home so nice, as they want us to give them a five-star rating themselves,” said Anna. “We’ve met interesting and wonderful people from all over the world, and each person leaves a little piece of themselves with us.”

HOST’S BENEFITS Renting out their house via Airbnb is a part-time business for Anna, who manages the cleaning, reservations, website, finances and taxes. Jim, still a full-time teacher, acts as a handyman and helper during quick turnaround times.

Airbnb gives hosts the flexibility to block off dates when they don’t want to rent or to increase prices for peak times. All money is exchanged through the website, and the company has taken

extensive measures to keep hosts, their homes and guests safe.

Conn said Airbnb’s customer service is second to none.

“I’ve had more than 50 people stay here since last year, and the experiences have been super positive,” she said.

Martin has no apprehensions about who she rents to because guests are so well-vetted, and guests are rated by previous hosts.

The most exciting news for the Goetzes is that by continuing to share their home via Airbnb, Jim will be able to retire five years earlier than originally planned.

“Airbnb has brought luxury to my life,” said Anna. “Guests require things we never had before: nice linens, new mattresses, Kleenex and paper towels. Another luxury is always having a cleaner house!”

Jim added that expenses such as internet service, utilities and even coffee can be prorated or written off.

Being out of their house while it’s occupied by guests has also allowed them to enjoy some amazing camping and travel adventures they wouldn’t have otherwise taken.

“I have no regrets about doing this,” said Jim. “It’s about the most positive thing I’ve ever done.” ■

Nominated by Tania Hajjar, Montrose Regional Library District Ray Holladay began volunteering at the Montrose Library just four years ago, yet we can’t imagine a time without him. Ray’s official volunteer title is shelver, which means he helps by putting returned items back on the shelves. You might think this would be a simple task in a quiet, peaceful environment, but shelving requires a focused mind to ensure accuracy, strong arms and back to push heavy book carts, and a cheerful spirit to work in a sometimes chaotic public space. Many of the library’s shelvers work seasonally, but Ray commits to helping yearround. He comes not once, but twice a week to make sure that the 20,000 books, DVDs, magazines and other materials that circulate each month are back in place where people can find them. He’s also a willing sub for other volunteers, frequently stepping in at a moment’s notice. But that’s not all. What else needs to be done? Rearrange all the picture books and shelving units in the Children’s Room? No problem! Provide crowd control at a rowdy Star Wars Day party?

I

nternational Student Exchange (ISE) is looking for volunteer families in Montrose, Olathe and the surrounding areas to host international high school students in the coming academic year. Host families can expect to gain a new family member, experience a new culture, create lifelong friendships, and make a positive impact locally and globally.

High school classes will start soon and interested parties must apply immediately.

“The exchange program focuses on bringing the people of the world closer together while educating the leaders of tomorrow through student exchange,” said Wayne Brewer, ISE CEO. ISE is a nonprofit organization that has provided opportunities for American host families and exchange students to learn, grow and share cultural experiences together since 1982.

Host families provide a caring environment, room and three meals a day. They should welcome the student and treat them as a member of the family, but just like any other child in the family,

students are also expected to help with household chores.

Exchange students are between the ages of 15 and 18 and come from countries such as Denmark, Spain, Belgium, Germany, Thailand, Brazil, Italy and Norway.

International students are English-speaking and have their own spending money. American teenagers can also study abroad through ISE. “We have hosted one student from Italy and one from Spain,” said Lynne Evans of Ouray. “It changed everyone’s lives, not just the young women who came from their respective countries.”

The deadline to match students with families is August 15,. Families can select an international student based on shared interests, hobbies, gender, etc.

Families are screened via a background check, an in-home interview, and verification of personal references.

Something else to think about: If you are in your later years and have a few chronic conditions, think about what tests you might want to forego. For instance, if you would choose not to have cancer treatment, why undergo mammograms? A doctor friend once told me that after many frequent admissions, one of his patients said she did not want to go to the hospital anymore. He told her she did not have to, and she could choose hospice instead. He said she was so relieved to know that she could die in peace and comfort without being in a hospital. OB Dear Old Bag: I have met a very nice man on a dating site. We have been involved for a few months now, and he just recently started talking about marriage. The problem is that he lives about 120 miles away. We each have a home and family in our respective cities. He has said several times, “When you come to live with me…” but the fact is, I have no intention of moving anywhere. I love my home and being near my family. But I am afraid that if I tell him, I will lose him. Help! Signed, BB Dear BB: I understand why people do not want to move in their later years, but that is why certain things should be brought up early in a relationship. You need to put your cards on the table now! Your man may be willing to move, but you won’t know until you fess up. A word of advice to my readers who are looking for love on dating sites: Only date people in your city unless you are willing to move, or let it be known that you are not flexible about moving. I had one reader who met a woman who was willing to move, but she did not want to live in the house where he had lived with his wife of 50 years. I advised them to sell their homes and move into an independent retirement community, which they did and it worked out well for them. Another couple moved in together, but found they were not good roommates, so she kept her house down the block and they visited each other. There are many different arrangements in second marriages. The flight attendant watches her do this and asks to see her ticket.

The flight attendant then tells the blonde that she paid for econo-

The blonde replies, "I'm blonde, I'm beautiful, I'm going to Toronto and I'm staying right here."

The flight attendant goes into the cockpit and tells the pilot and the copilot of the situation.

The copilot goes back to the blonde and tries to explain that because she only paid for economy she will have to leave and return to her seat.

The blonde replies, "I’m blonde, I’m beautiful, I’m going to Toronto and I’m staying right here."

The copilot tells the pilot that he should probably have the police waiting when they land.

The pilot says, "You say she is a blonde? I’ll handle this; I’m married to a blonde. I speak blonde."

He goes back to the blonde and whispers in her ear, and she says,

"Oh, I’m sorry."

She gets up and goes back to her seat in economy.

The flight attendant and copilot are amazed and asked him what he said to make her move without any fuss.

"I told her, 'First class isn't going to Toronto.’"

Submitted by Barry Wetzel A cowboy was overseeing his herd in a remote mountainous pasture in California when a brand-new BMW advanced toward him out of a cloud of dust. The driver, a young man dressed in a designer suit, Gucci shoes, Ray Ban sunglasses and a YSL tie leaned out the window and asked the cowboy, "If I tell you exactly how many cows and calves you have in your herd will you give me a calf?"

The cowboy looked at the man then looked at his peacefully grazing herd and calmly answered, "Sure, why not?"

The yuppie parked his car, whipped out his iPad, connected it to his cell phone, and surfed to a NASA page on the Internet, where he called up a GPS satellite to get an exact fix on his location, which he then fed to another NASA satellite that scans the area in an ultra-high-resolution photo. The young man then opened the digital photo in Adobe Photoshop and exported it to an image processing facility in Hamburg, Germany.

Within seconds, the yuppie received an email on his iPhone.

He then accessed a MS-SQL database through an ODBC connected Excel spreadsheet with email on his Blackberry and, after a few minutes, received a response. Finally, he printed out a full-color, 150-page report on his high-tech, miniaturized HP LaserJet printer, turned to the cowboy and said, "You have exactly 1,586 cows and calves." â&#x20AC;&#x153;That's right,â&#x20AC;? said the cowboy. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Well, I guess you can take one of my calves.â&#x20AC;?

He watched the young man select one of the animals and looked on with amusement as the young man stuffed it into the trunk of his car. Then the cowboy said to the young man, "Hey, if I can tell you exactly what your business is, will you give me back my calf?"

The young man thought about it for a second and replied, "Okay, why not?"

"You're a Congressman for the U.S. Government."

"Wow! That's correct," said the yuppie, "but how did you guess that?"

"No guessing required," answered the cowboy. "You showed up here even though nobody called you, you want to get paid for an answer I already knew and a question I never asked. You used millions of dollars worth of equipment trying to show me how much smarter than me you are and you don't know a thing about how working people make a living! Five years ago Montrose Downtown added a unique feature to its collection of shops, galleries, boutiques and restaurants: a music academy. Today, the Precedence Music Academy is still going strong.

Founder and owner Jordan Carls started playing music at 5 years old. His parents noticed he was picking up melodies by ear and decided to start him with piano lessons to develop his musical abilities. He later picked up woodwinds, mainly clarinet and saxophone, in middle school.

Instead of going to high school, Carls auditioned for college band and, combined with his test scores, he ended up attending Mesa State in Grand Junction.

Born and raised in Montrose, Carls was set on a life in academia.

His goal was to be a teacher, and then a university professor with a few PhDs under his belt. But he became disillusioned with the educational system, seeing gaps in what he considered to be important areas. Instead, he moved back to his hometown of Montrose, where Precedence Music Academy was born.

The academy was formed with a group of other master teachers (a teacher so knowledgeable on the subject that they can adapt their teaching style to meet the needs of any student). Today, Precedence teachers possess either a master’s degree in their subject or 20 years of performance and teaching experience. Currently,

there are around 10 music teachers, which varies per season.

Precedence also boasts two visual art teachers with similar levels of education or experience.

The academy’s visual arts program offers a range of subjects including painting, sculpture, photography and drawing.

Precedence welcomes anyone who wants to learn. Typically students fall between the ages of 5-16; however, currently the youngest “student” is an 8-month-old attendee of Tot Rock, a music therapy-based program that aims to give kids a head start with the basics of music and also provides social development.

When it comes to music, Carls is understandably passionate, particularly about the need for young people to have it in their lives.

“There seems to be huge push in public schools towards STEM, but in a lot of cases the fine arts departments are usually the first

to get funding cuts,” Carls said.

“While STEM disciplines are great at training logic in the brain, music and art train us and our soul to deal with the rigors of daily life and add joy and color to ourselves.”

Carls points out that Precedence works closely with band directors at Montrose High School to provide private lessons to supplement student learning, particularly if a student’s instrument of choice isn’t part of the band.

Carls is the president of the Montrose Music Teacher Association, the local chapter of the Music Teachers National Association, which provides master classes and arranges concerts and other events. Many of the teachers at Precedence can also be found performing in and around Montrose.

8 things to know before replacing your computer

B

ack-to-School season is typically the best time to get the best deal on a computer, even if you aren’t the one going back to school. If you have been waiting to replace an old computer, here are a few tips: 1) Don’t ask the salesperson or your kids/grandkids for their suggestions.

These people know a lot about computers and technology, but they will likely recommend the machine they would buy for themselves. You are perfectly capable of picking out the right machine, even if you know very little about computers.

2) Be honest about what you are going to do with your new computer.

The most powerful computers on the shelf are powerful enough to create digital animation and play video games. Don’t buy a machine that will do everything you WANT to do with it. Buy a machine that will do everything you NEED to do with it.

3) Ignore the processor and focus on the RAM (memory).

Any computer you buy will be powerful enough for the Internet, email, digital photo management, document creation, etc. The processor is essentially the engine to your computer and RAM is the steering and suspension. RAM speeds up the computer’s reaction time and ability to stay stable as you move from task to task.

4) The size of the hard drive (storage) is generally irrelevant.

Any hard drive over 500GB is probably going to be large enough

to hold everything you create for at least five years. If you keep a lot of videos on your computer, you can fill up the empty space a little quicker. External hard drives cost less than $100. Don’t spend a lot more on a computer if the only advantage is storage.

5) Computers with SSDs generally run faster.

A solid state drive (SSD) is a hard drive storage device without any moving parts. Typically you get a little less storage for your money, but what you lose in capacity, you gain in speed. I would rather have a 500GB SSD than a traditional 2TB hard drive in my machine.

This is especially true if it’s a laptop or all-in-one computer.

6) Brand doesn’t matter.

Every brand has its lemons. There is a difference between Apple and other brands, but that difference is more than price. If you are comparing Dell to HP to Lenovo to Asus, etc., it’s important to know that all of these machines purchase their parts from the same original equipment manufacturers.

7) Stay away from the bargain basement.

Expensive computers generally go obsolete around the same time as inexpensive computers, but buying the cheapest machine you can find is always a bad idea.

8) Never buy a used computer.

As a general rule, you can always put a good computer to use. If someone is selling a used one, there is always a reason. ■

100 years of Orvis Hot Springs

T

his year marks the 100th anniversary of Orvis Hot Springs.

But not many people remember the

varied history of the place or the family behind the name.

The Ute Indians were the first to use the Uncompahgre Hot Springs, located on reservation land near

Ridgway. Translated, Uncompahgre means “hot water.” Today this water warms the 100-year-old Orvis Hot Springs, a public spa visited by thousands year-round.

The spa’s origins date back to when Sarah Jarvis Orvis and her first husband, A.H. “Billy” Jarvis, squatted on reservation land in 1876. They subsequently claimed the hot springs as part of their ranch, which was such prime property that it had to be defended against claim jumpers, who reportedly tried to slip onto the property in the guise of mailmen.

Billy died in 1879. In 1882, Sarah remarried to Lewis Orvis Sr. and they continued to live on the ranch.

In 1881, local Indians were forcibly moved to Utah and the couple was eventually given a government patent to the land. The Utes continued to use the hot springs but were unhappy with Orvis’ ownership of the land.

“The Orvis ranch was always popular with Indians because of the hot springs. The [Indians] always stopped there to bathe and dance when they were in the country,” Sarah said in a 1934 interview.

Native Americans from Manitou to Ignacio knew of and used the spring.

THE ORVIS PLUNGE

In 1919, Lewis, Sarah and Lewis’ son opened the Orvis Plunge, an enclosed swimming pool. They piped extremely hot water, about 127 degrees Fahrenheit, from the spring to the pool and cooled it to a comfortable temperature. At the time, the construction of the pool and enclosure cost $1,500.

Eventually, other improvements were added, including a fishing lake and a clubhouse. All that remains of the clubhouse today is the fireplaces.

In 1933 they sold Orvis Plunge. It had a succession of various owners until it fell into disrepair in the early 1950s when the roof caved in and the building was badly damaged. In 1961, a fire destroyed what remained.

Lois and Paul Witt constructed the current building and ran a chiropractic practice for a number of years. The building continued to change hands until Jeff Kerbel bought the property and received permission from the Orvis family to call his business Orvis Hot Springs.

He started the clothing-optional rule, which was continued by the next owner, Jack Cosgrove.

In 2005, the Orvis family reacquired the business, now run by Kenneth Orvis.

The Orvis Hot Springs today looks totally different from the 1919 Orvis Plunge. A decorative wall encloses five pools of varying water temperature. A horticulturist on staff keeps ornamental flowers

and bushes along paving stone walkways that discretely accent the pools. Clothing is still optional—one of the requirements when Kenneth brought the business back into the family. The modern Orvis Hot Springs also includes an indoor pool, and two private tubs. ■

The project will allow the group to analyze the issue of opioid use disorder and develop a comprehensive plan to address gaps and opportunities in prevention, treatment, and recovery services related to the issue. The consortium will produce evidence-based, promising and innovative approaches proven to reduce the fatal consequences associated with opioid overdose.
