Stuck mulling over the Medicare muddle?

Crucial tips for understanding Medicare

You can choose a new drug plan each year with no penalty; However, if you require a new prescription during that year, you’ll be at the mercy of your current drug plan.

When choosing your Medicare plan, start by asking your doctors and your friends what plan(s) they recommend.

Perhaps the clinic or hospital your doctor is associated with only accepts one or two plans. If your friends have had good experiences with their plans, consider those, but understand that what works for your friends may not always work for you.

I

’ve been writing about Medicare for years, so I wasn’t particularly affronted when, not long after my 64th birthday, I started receiving advertising circulars about Medicare, Medicare Advantage and supplemental plans.

Whether you are a newly enrolling senior or have been enrolled in Medicare for years, you do need to understand the system and the changes that happen nearly every year.

AGING RESOURCES

WHERE TO START Confusion about Medicare stems from it being cobbled together over the last 55 years by many political administrations. When approved by President Lyndon Johnson in 1965, it included only Part A (hospital) and Part B (doctor visits) coverage. In the 1980s, supplemental private insurance in the form of Medigap plans were offered to cover some of the deductibles and copays. The Medigap plans currently available in most states are A, B, D, G, K, L, M and N. Each plan offers a different level of coverage.

Two other plans, C and F, are no longer available to new enrollees.

In the 1990s, Medicare Advantage (MA, or Part C) was offered as an entirely different way to access the Medicare system. MA providers offer more services than original Medicare with the tradeoff of limiting your choice of medical providers. Whereas the focus of Medigap is covering the “gap” of deductibles and copays, MA’s focus is providing additional services such as vision and dental.

Your first decision, and the most important, is deciding whether to expand your upcoming Medicare coverage either through Medicare Advantage (Part C) or Medigap (supplemental Medicare). A good place to start is by reading “Medicare & You: The Official U.S. Government Handbook,” available at www.medicare.gov.

DRUG COVERAGE Part D Drug coverage is different in an important way.

Since going into effect in 2006, insurance companies tinker with their list of covered drugs. Because of this, each year during Medicare Open Enrollment (October 15

You can also contact a local Medicare insurance sales advisor.

ADDITIONAL THINGS TO KNOW: • Your initial Medicare enrollment period begins the third month before your 65th birthday month and finishes at the end of the third month after your birthday month.

That gives you seven months to make some pretty momentous decisions.

• You can sign up later, at retirement, if your current coverage through an employer is at least as comprehensive as Medicare (“creditable coverage”). Otherwise, you may face a permanent financial penalty.

• Open Enrollment—when current insureds can choose a new MA, drug, or supplemental plan—is October 15 through December 7 each year. Coverage starts January 1, 2022.

If you’re approaching your 65th birthday, make some time for Medicare decisions. Despite my background in financial planning, I still find the choices complex and confusing. ■

Is your retirement plan doable?

By Teresa Ambord re you approaching retirement? If so, it’s time to review your plan. The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) recently offered some tips for those hoping to retire in the next five years. Ask yourself the following:

Do you have prepaid or discounted legal services through your job?

According to the WSJ, one of the biggest regrets clients have in retirement is that they did not take advantage of this type of plan when they had the chance. If it’s available, use it to have a will and trust drawn up.

How much income will you need to retire the way you want to?

Calculate what you spend now. This might mean keeping a record of every dime you spend for a few months so you’ll have a baseline. Then make a rough retirement budget and adjust your current spending to what you expect to have at retirement.

Do you plan to travel? Are you going to work part time or pursue a second career?

By making a retirement budget and comparing it to what you spend now, you can know what lifestyle changes you’ll have to make after you stop working full time.

Where do you want to live?

Do you plan to stay put, downsize or relocate?

Factor in the costs to move and the closing costs of buying a new residence. If you plan to move to a condo, what fees should you expect to pay?

If you expect to move to another state, what will the differences be in state personal income tax, property tax and sales tax?

State and local taxes can vary widely. Some states do not charge personal income tax at all, and in other states, property taxes are oppressive. On the other hand, some states have such affordable property tax that you’ll find you can afford a bigger house than you expected.

Will you have a mortgage?

It might be a good idea to refinance your mortgage while you are still working. Interest rates are low, but may head higher. If you can’t pay off your home before you retire, consider refinancing now to reduce your payments to a level that will be easier to manage on retirement income.

Remember, you’ll have your mortgage interest tax deduction to offset your taxable interest income.

What car or cars will you need?

You’ll want your overhead to be as low as possible once you retire, so it’s best to avoid car loans. If you hope to upgrade your vehicle in retirement, it might be best to do it now. Also consider whether you’ll need two cars. If one is enough, you can sell the other and tuck away the money or upgrade the vehicle you keep.

What will your taxes be in retirement?

Of course, nobody knows what the tax rates will be, but here are some points you can anticipate. If you’re contributing to a 401(k) plan, you are likely getting a healthy tax break for that. But once you stop contributing and start collecting, the tax situation flips. You no longer have a deduction, and the distributions you get will be taxable.

You might be able to avoid that harsh reality by moving some funds now into a Roth 401(k) or Roth IRA. You will pay the income due on those funds now, but your future earnings will be tax free. Plus, if you believe taxes will rise in the future, you can save by getting the tax bite over with now. Conversions can be complex, so don’t attempt them without the help of your tax advisor.

Also, if you currently have a mortgage but plan to sell your home or pay off the mortgage before retirement, keep in mind that you will lose a significant tax deduction.

What is your health insurance situation?

Will you keep the benefits you have through your employer?

Of course, you won’t be able to qualify for Medicare until you are 65, and even then you will need to cover significant out-of-pocket costs.

Sit down with your financial advisor to look at what you have and what employer policies, if any, you can keep.

How is your money currently invested?

If you’re five years from retirement, you may want to shift some of your money away from growth stocks, which carry more risk, and towards something more conservative, such as income investments. But don’t move all of your money.

If the market grows, you’ll want to have some skin in the game. Even this close to retirement, you still need some diversity in your investment portfolio.

What’s your game plan?

It’s easy to put off thinking about retirement until after you retire. Take some time to consider potential hobbies and lay the foundation for what you’d like to pursue in retirement, so when the time comes, you can step right into the next chapter. ■

How to refurbish your kitchen on a budget AFTER

only wanted new blinds for the kitchen. However, the best-laid plans, etcetera.

Wandering through the showroom of a local window and blinds dealer, I fell in love with pale gray, custom vertical honeycomb insulating blinds. The clincher? They were half price. I ordered one for the slider, one for the small window and settled back to wait for delivery. What could possibly go wrong?

A lot. When I removed the one-year-from-ancient traverse drapes, I found a doggy door, long forgotten because the drapes had hidden it for years.

My nephew, a carpenter, tore out the eyesore and patched the hole. He and I installed the new blinds. That wasn’t the end of it, though.

The creamy walls looked dirty, and they clashed with the blinds. So off to buy the palest gray and stark white paints available. Fortunately, I like painting, because I would spend the next two weeks painting the walls and refreshing the cabinet paint.

Years ago, I’d painted the doors and drawer fronts spring-green. They really didn’t work with the new color scheme. Off came the doors (all 22 of them) and seven drawer fronts. The original brass hardware, discolored and dirty, would have been an insult to a second-hand store.

My neighbor Bob and I spent the next two weeks stripping green paint, sanding surfaces and priming doors in batches.

The doors came home to my studio to be given three coats of pure white paint. Replacement hinges and knobs fit the clean lines I envisioned. Mounting the lower doors was easy. The high ones, not so much. Again, Bob arrived and had the tall upper doors in place (with me holding them) in half an hour.

The room looked great except for the 1980 woodgrained Formica countertop with loose edge strips that caught on anyone passing. Replacing the counter would mean big bucks. There had to be a less expensive way.

Sunday morning I went out to get the paper and lo and behold! There was an ad for a company that refinishes counters—with a $70 off coupon!

Monday, I went to the showroom to find out when I could get an estimate. The young lady left, returned, and said, “How about today?”

I barely beat the installer home!

Later that week, the fridge took up residence on one side of the dining table and the stove on the other. Plastic sheets draped cabinets, sink and floor. The installer had filled all the dings and cracks. By 5 p.m., the Formica had been transformed into what looked like a granite slab. Even though I’d been warned not to touch, I couldn’t help gently tapping the “stone” with an inquisitive finger. I was in love.

On Friday, the installer sprayed her little heart out, then cautioned me, “Give it 48 hours.”

When the stove and fridge were back in place and my usual countertop clutter restored, my heart felt as if it would burst. Friends and strangers alike had created a modern space decades away from the 40-year-old kitchen I’d worked in for 18 years.

The cost was affordable, but the best part of the refurbishing cost nothing. Relining the cabinets and drawers made me revisit my stuff. Did I actually need 23 coffee cups?

Or three partial jars of thyme?

I had gotten into the habit of leaving dirty dishes in the sink and boxes of cereal and other clutter on the counter.

Now I’m eager to keep my kitchen clean and neat. I sit in the morning sun, serene and joyful, write in my journal, and smile as I look at my brand-new kitchen. ■

ecades ago, my primary care doctor referred me to a urologist for suspected kidney stones.

After straining my urine and collecting a little vial of stones, I phoned in the results to the urologist’s nurse. In my first meeting with the doctor, I placed the vial on his desk.

He leaned back in his chair, hands crossed behind his neck, and mused, “We’ll have to figure out what your pain was because young women like you don’t get kidney stones.”

“Then what are those?” I blurted out. He lurched forward in his seat to examine the stones. Thus began our “rocky” relationship.

At my next kidney stone attack, the nurse reported that the doctor was on the golf course and not answering his pager. I ended up in the emergency room, vomiting on the hallway floor. After that, I changed doctors.

As we age, we tend to spend less time jogging and more time with doctors. Our relationships with various medical professionals become increasingly important. What happens when we don’t see eye to eye with a doctor?

Complaints about doctors are more likely to be about communication than medical care.

A recent study revealed that 75 percent of doctors believe they communicate satisfactorily with their patients.

Only 21 percent of those patients agreed.

As medical knowledge about how the body works continues to grow, expectations increase for doctors and nurses.

At the same time, medical insurers push medical practices to accept larger patient loads. Health care may be at a breaking point, but when you are at a doctor’s appointment, your own health care is what rightly concerns you.

DO YOUR PART Before you give up on your current team, make sure you are contributing to good communication with your doctors.

Be firm but respectful of their professional knowledge.

Express your concerns honestly and graciously. If these attempts don’t resolve the issue, consider another doctor in the same practice, which would cause you less disruption in terms of medical records.

In my case, I never again met with that urologist, but that was partly because I’ve never had stones again. Each episode occurred within two months of childbirth, so I stuck with just two kids and skipped further stones.

In these difficult days for health care, you may feel like you have no choice but to keep your team together. In this case, address your concerns in the way most comfortable for you: in person, by phone, by mail or email. Don’t suffer in silence because, frankly, that’s not good for your health either. ■

s it so bad to have a second piece of cake? Or to skip a week of exercising when you feel overwhelmed by work, grandkids and life? The experts say no, as long as you don’t convince yourself it’s always okay.

But if rationalizing that you can be “bad” here and there becomes a pattern, it can sabotage all your stay-well efforts.

Heart disease is the nation’s number one killer. To defy denial and keep your ticker on track for the long run, I’ve dissected five common heart health self-deceptions.

n Lie #1: My “bad” cholesterol is high, but I don’t have to worry because my “good” cholesterol is high, too. ✔ Reality Check

“A really high LDL (bad) cholesterol reading can outweigh the benefits of high HDL (good) cholesterol,” said Christie Mitchell Ballantyne, MD, a cardiovascular researcher at Baylor University in Houston LDL cholesterol should be less than 100 and HDL choles-

terol should be 60 or higher—preferably in the 80s.

“The further you are from that optimal LDL level, the less likely a high HDL will protect you,” said Ballantyne.

To lower LDL cholesterol, eat lots of vegetables, fruit, whole grains, beans, nonfat dairy and lean protein. One study found that adding plant foods (salad, vegetables, beans) to a low-saturated-fat diet lowered LDL more than simply cutting saturated fat alone.

And don’t cut out all fats. Eliminating unsaturated fats can cause both good and bad cholesterol to drop. Aim to get about 20 to 25 percent of your calories from unsaturated fats like olive and canola oil and less than 5 to 6 percent from saturated fat, which is found in animal products like meat and dairy.

n Lie #2: I don’t have to work out—chasing my grandkids around is enough. ✔ Reality Check

If you spend an hour or so a day running after your grandkids, you are getting some heart health benefits—a modest calorie burn, an immune-system boost, and lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels. But it’s the more intense,

Transform grandkid duty into exercise. If you typically stroll in the park with a toddler, for example, pick up the pace and try to log in 30 minutes. And while your grandchild naps or plays, strength train at home. Build a workout around push-ups, lunges, walking lunges, squats (sitting in a chair then standing up), calf raises (going up and down on your toes when you’re standing on a stair) and tricep dips.

Try to do 8- 12 reps and two sets of each exercise.

One study found that women who had two to four

drinks a day took in nearly 30 percent more calories overall than nondrinkers. Keep tabs on how much you’re pouring: experts consider four ounces equal to one serving, or about one-fourth to one-half of a big goblet.

n Lie #4: I can get by on five hours of sleep a night. ✔ Reality Check

Skimping on shut-eye is okay every once in a while, but getting fewer than seven hours a night regularly will make you moody, irritable and less productive.

“Sleep debt makes multitasking and the ability to focus more difficult,” said Clete A. Kushida, MD, PhD, director of the Stanford University Center for Human Sleep Research in Palo Alto, California.

The heart health consequences are pretty steep, too.

Getting less than seven hours of sleep each night can increase your risk of high blood pressure, which is one of the leading risks for heart disease and stroke. Moreover, being a sleep underachiever can lead to weight gain. People who typically get five hours a night also have 15 percent higher levels of ghrelin—a hormone that can stimulate appetite— than those who get eight hours.

Being overweight or obese can increase your risk of heart disease by increasing blood pressure, LDL cholesterol levels and blood sugar. Excess weight also makes your heart work harder to send blood to all the cells in your body.

To get more sleep, try to go to bed earlier, such as 9:30 p.m. If that’s not possible, try to grab an afternoon nap whenever you can.

n Lie #5: I’m not overweight.

We know it’s hard to hear, but if your body-mass index (BMI), a measure of fat based on height and weight, is 25 or higher, you may need to lose 5 to 10 percent of your weight, Ballantyne explained. Unfortunately, bone mass can constitute only 4 to 7 percent of your total weight— about 6 to 10 pounds if you weigh 150—and that’s considered too small to affect BMI. n

What to expect when the nurse comes to your house

he scene is becoming increasingly familiar: a knock on the door, which the patient opens to see a strange person with a couple of bags hanging off his or her shoulders.

“Hello. I’m your home care nurse.”

The population is aging. Baby boomers are retiring. From total knee replacements to infected wounds, and from pneumonia to post-operative status, the need for home care is on the rise. Insurances have created lines of limitations in the amount of days people can stay in the hospital. Wound vacs and IVs must be tended to properly in order to prevent complications. In essence, home care has become like a mini-hospital on wheels.

Your first visit from a home health care nurse usually comes on the day of discharge or the next day. Home visits can take up to two hours—you may be exhausted, but it’s important to visit with the nurse and let them get to know you and your needs.

Nurses will usually conduct a head-to-toe assessment and note any medications you’re on. They should make sure you understand proper medication, dosage, side effects and changes to report to your physician, and document follow-up visits to the doctor.

The nurse works with you to complete your care plan, which typically includes how many visits are anticipated in the 60-day certification period and may include such things as making sure blood glucose and vital signs are within physician-given parameters. It’s their job to educate patients on medications and wound care, changes to report to the medical staff, signs of infection, and other diagnosis-specific functions.

If you need care beyond the certification period, the nurse must obtain orders from your physician in compliance with Medicare and Medicaid guidelines. Most private insurances must provide authorization for additional visits.

Physical therapy, occupational therapy, or social work may follow to help guide you to independence.

Openness and honesty are important. Hopefully you and your nurse establish trust with one another, and you are confident in asking questions—no questions are off limits. If you don’t know the purpose of a medication, ask. If there’s still a question, the nurse should investigate and follow up with your doctor.

Know that health providers are there to serve you. If you find that the nurse is rude, in a rush and seemingly has no “bedside manner,” speak up about it. Family members are reluctant to speak up for fear of retaliation toward their loved one.

Time is another factor. The nurse is a professional, and should demonstrate responsibility when it comes to arranging the visit time. Keep in mind that the nurse has other patients to see, usually in a wide geographical area, but it’s rude and unprofessional for a nurse to show up late without letting you know, or to not show up to a scheduled appointment at all.

Open communication and mutual trust with your nurse results in less anxiety and helps the healing process. Hopefully, you can look back on your recovery with accomplishment and satisfaction, knowing that you participated in the plan of care to help yourself get better. ■

lder housing isn’t what it once was, and thank goodness for that.

I worked part-time in a real convalescent hospital when I was in college. I remember walking in the front door of that nursing home, and the first thing that hit you was the smell of urine. Too many patients and too few staff to adequately care for them meant the residents were miserable much of the time.

These days, elder care has become a booming industry and most senior facilities have stepped up to meet the demand by providing excellent care. The older I get, the more friends and family members I have that need these various levels of care, from temporary stays in rehabilitation hospitals to independent living to full nursing care.

If you foresee that you or a loved one will soon need some degree of long-term care, it might be a good idea to start looking at the options. Here’s a breakdown of the major types of facilities.

Independent living. These are best for people who want convenience, don’t have specific medical care needs and can live on their own. Independent living communities offer meal preparation, housekeeping and security, and may have on-site beauty parlors and barbers, church services, buses to take residents shopping and transportation to appointments.

Assisted living. These are for people who need some medical care. They include everything offered by an independent living facility, but can also provide help with managing medications when needed, and with activities of daily living, such as bathing, dressing and grooming. Some assisted living homes are apartment-like settings and others are more institutional.

Nursing facilities. Nursing homes are for people who need round-the-clock nursing care and other support services. If this is the level of home you are considering, it’s important to inquire about how emergency care is provided.

How available are physicians? Are staff members certified in CPR? How does the nursing home deal with family visits?

How are patients with Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s cared for?

News of substandard care travels fast in the medical community, so ask the patient’s doctor, nurses and therapists what facilities they would recommend. Also ask social workers, relatives and friends.

WHAT TO CONSIDER

If possible, let the patients participate in the decision of where they will live even if their needs for care are far into the future. If you go facility shopping, here are a few points to pay special attention to: • Cleanliness. Observe hygiene. It shouldn’t be hard to notice if residents are being neglected.

• Staff. Does the number of staff seem adequate to manage the number of patients? That’s not to say that employees aren’t hopping busy, but the staff-to-patient ratio should be such that all patients get bathed and receive other personal attention they need. The same is true not just for nursing care, but also general maintenance and kitchen staff.

• Services. What are the patient’s special needs? Be sure the facility provides for those needs. For example, a patient may require the use of a lift machine to get in and out of bed. Many will need physical therapy and/or a gym where they can go to strengthen their limbs. How are supplies paid for? If supply costs are added to the patient’s bill, are the costs reasonable? Are there regular increases in costs? Hidden charges? Obviously, meals are a key service. Visit facilities during meal times and observe if meals are served in a relaxed manner and if there’s plenty of food available.

GET THE UNSEEN STORY

Don’t accept any facility without first checking its financial stability, record of legal compliance and quality of management. Facilities aren’t likely to be perfect, but significant problems in any of these areas may lead to trouble finding a sufficient staff of qualified health professionals.

Find out if the facility has current valid state and local licenses, and liability and malpractice insurance.

Ask to review state inspection reports and investigate whether they have lawsuits pending. ■

one of us is promised tomorrow regardless of our age. There is always the chance that you won’t wake up tomorrow or that an accident or sudden illness will make you unable to speak for yourself. If that should happen, could someone step in for you?

While there is time, write a letter providing trusted family members with information they will need. Such a letter will not be legally binding and should be informational, but keep the tone casual.

Keep the letter in a private place, letting key people—your spouse, children or heirs—know where it is, and provide your attorney and accountant each with a copy. Update it as details change.

“You’ve got a friend in me”

Senior Companions offer friendship to homebound seniors

or 30 years, St. Mary’s Senior Companion Program has served Grand Valley seniors who no longer drive by assisting them with grocery shopping, errands, drives to appointments and more. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the help that Senior Companions offer is even more essential.

COMBATING LONELINESS Carol Rice, 74, has volunteered with the program for almost three years. Her hours vary, as she can see each of her companions up to three hours a week.

Rice takes companions shopping, drives them to medical and salon appointments, or just out for long rides so they don’t feel so isolated. She also helps them with banking, paying bills, and other tasks that require mobility or adequate vision. Even more important, friendships blossom through these weekly interactions.

“You can hear the joy in their voices and see them smile when I arrive. It’s very heartwarming to know you’re breaking their loneliness, and I get as much out of it as they do,” Rice said.

Shirley Sneary, 85, agrees with Rice, who has been with her since she moved into Grand View Apartments a little over a year ago.

“The best part of being in the program is the fellowship— having someone to visit with, to get out with,” Sneary said.

Rice and Sneary meet every other week, with Sneary’s relatives filling in by visiting and running errands for her.

In 2020, Senior Companion volunteers provided 23,000 hours of service, drove 77,250 miles and aided 207 clients.

According to Senior Companions Program Coordinator Tanya Fink, the help volunteers provide keeps clients in their homes longer.

It’s not all sunshine and roses, though. According to Rice, it can be heart-wrenching to see a client go through medical problems or other issues that she can’t help with. But, for her, the positives and joy of the program always outweigh the sorrowful parts.

FRIENDSHIPS DURING COVID COVID has affected volunteers and clients, who are both considered a vulnerable population. But Fink argued that the program remains essential.

“Though some clients no longer feel comfortable going out, the volunteers can still bring groceries to them, or even

Rice said she’s had to change her relationships with clients since the pandemic.

“When everything shut down, neither I nor my clients wanted to get together. When things opened up again, they were eager for me to come back. Now there are no hugs, and we all wear masks. I may pat them on the back as I leave and say, ‘Consider yourself hugged.’ I have to keep myself and them safe,” she said.

Rice has continued to help Sneary while taking the necessary precautions. But not all volunteers have stayed on.

“Due to volunteers stepping down, our waitlist has grown to over six months,” Fink said.

If you’re healthy, active and enjoy helping others, Fink said, “We really need you!”

The schedule is flexible for Senior Companion volunteers, who must be 55 or older. They can volunteer from two to six hours per week—and if they qualify, they may earn a taxfree hourly stipend plus vacation and sick days. Regardless, they receive mileage reimbursement as well as accident, auto and personal liability insurance for free. Annual physicals and 55-Alive driving courses are free, too.

5 myths about Alzheimer’s disease Provided by Alzheimer's Association Colorado

D

espite being the no. 6 cause of death of Americans, and the single largest risk to the health of our Medicare system, Alzheimer’s disease isn’t widely understood.

Even those most clearly at risk will go to great lengths to maintain a distance from the illness.

“Callers to our helpline sometimes won’t even give us their name,” said Cara Oberheide with the Alzheimer’s Association Colorado Chapter. “For some, acknowledging their concerns about memory loss may be an admission of their worst fears: that they have Alzheimer’s disease.”

Alzheimer’s deserves its fearsome reputation. It kills more people annually than breast and prostate cancers combined. Every 65 seconds, someone in the U.S. is diagnosed with the disease for which there is no prevention, no treatment and no cure.

But it’s also one of the most costly diseases. Caring for people with Alzheimer’s and other dementias currently costs one of every five Medicare dollars and is expected to rise to $1 of $3 by 2050 if a cure isn’t found.

The Alzheimer’s Association is the largest non-governmental source of funding for research to find a cure. But until one is found, know these common myths about Alzheimer’s disease:

Myth 1: Memory loss is a normal part of aging. It’s

normal to have occasional memory challenges as we age, such as forgetting the name of someone you just met. But frequent memory loss from Alzheimer’s disrupts your daily life, such as needing to rely on memory aids or family members for things that one previously handled themselves.

Myth 2: Alzheimer’s is not fatal. Alzheimer’s disease

is America’s sixth-leading cause of death. It slowly destroys brain cells, ultimately leading to the loss of body functions and death.

Myth 3: The risk of Alzheimer’s is the same for everyone. While the main risk factor for Alzheimer’s is

aging, there are population groups that are at greater risk.

African-Americans are twice as likely as whites to be diagnosed, and Hispanic-Latinos are 50 percent more likely.

And, as a group, two-thirds of Americans with Alzheimer’s disease are women.

Myth 4: Alzheimer’s only affects the elderly. An estimated 200,000 people in the U.S. under age 65 are living with Alzheimer’s.

Myth 5: I can ignore the symptoms of Alzheimer’s and get by. Some people are able to temporarily work

around memory loss and other symptoms of Alzheimer’s by compensating in other ways. However, delaying diagnosis is detrimental because it also delays access to medications, support services, planning and other helpful resources.

Combating age bias in the workplace

lder adults have recently emerged as the fastest-growing labor segment, both in the United States and around the world. A number of factors explains this trend, including low unemployment and difficulty recruiting and retaining talent. Less quantifiable is the notion that our generation is arriving at retirement age with higher expectations and less financial hardiness. Job hunting has morphed into the new senior hobby.

OK, BOOMER It’s a demanding hobby, to be sure. Young job seekers, fresh out of school, are wisely counseled to “meet with their future self,” listening to workers in positions they’d like to hold in a decade. This can set up a mentor-mentee relationship that helps draw the job seeker into their desired field. But what if the job seeker is older than their potential mentor?

Senior job applicants need a different angle to make an impression.

The reasons for hiring an older worker far surpass the disadvantages. Seniors generally have experience in a wide variety of situations and deep knowledge in specialized areas. We have learned when to roll with the punches and when to take a stand.

AARP research provides an additional reason to look at mature applicants.

“The relative productivity of both older and younger workers is higher in companies that utilize mixed-age work teams than in companies that do not,” the AARP 2016 publication found.

TIPS FOR SENIOR JOB SEEKERS How can older workers’ resumes avoid ending up in the circular file? A resume for a 50-something could run for many pages, but the last 15 years or so are the most relevant. Concentrate on your highlights. It almost goes without saying to mine your personal network.

Check with friends whose work, industry, or work situation you admire. Determine the roles for which you might be qualified in their organization. Consider nonprofits where you’ve been a volunteer or donated over the years, and think about where you could fit in.

Some industries are more conducive to older workers. Again, nonprofits are a good fit here. Con-

sider other areas where seniors are a target market, such as medical sales or patient advocates. Many careers benefit from people with maturity and perspective: dietitian, accountant, personal trainer, writer or editor, or any type of customer service representative.

Part-time jobs are great for showing your prowess and can grow to full-time work if there’s a match. Tutoring and virtual assistants fall into this category. Other ways to package a job successfully are to offer contract employment, assuming you have other access to insurance. If you can afford to do so without compromising your retirement, you could consider starting a business or buying a franchise in an area you understand.

Some employers fear an older worker may quickly become bored in a job for which they are considered “overqualified.” You may choose to address this head on with arguments such as, “I’m looking for an encore career in a different but related field” or “I’m more interested in applying my skills in a new area, with a good work-life balance.”

USE LOCAL RESOURCES Perhaps your concern is the opposite: a perceived lack of skills. Many women especially find themselves needing supplemental income but feel as if they’ve been out of the workforce for too long to qualify. In that case, check out the senior services in your area, which may be available through the workforce center. Be on the lookout for job training or resume writing workshops. You likely have more skills than you think!

The bottom line is, age bias is real. Nevertheless, the facts are on our side. We have wisdom, energy and perspicacity. As with any task, the hardest part is inertia. That’s why it’s important to look inside yourself first to uncover where your enthusiasm lies. ■
