When Santa stops being real I ’ve never thought of Christmas as a time to declutter (quite the opposite), but my mother and in-laws are all about it this year.

My mom came over to my house on Thanksgiving with a box of Cranberry Bliss Bars and a paper bag filled with items from my childhood: photos of me in handmade frames of paper and glitter, the outfit I wore when I came home from the hospital, and even little boxes containing my baby teeth.

(Weird, I know.)

She told me how she enjoyed sorting through tubs of photos, school projects and memorabilia that had been in storage for more than a decade. Looking over my mom’s shoulder through most of it, my kid sister Siarra was also intrigued. With more than 11 years between her and my other younger sister, she practically had a glimpse into another era.

Of course, like many Generation Zers, she wondered why my mom had so many photos of her three older sisters and not many of her. Then she saw the filled-out baby books and the teeth—where were hers? She stormed off but didn’t get very far before pausing. Then she spun around and asked, “Does this mean the Tooth Fairy isn’t real?”

No doubt this revelation also affirmed any uncertainty she had about the existence of Santa Claus.

Research suggests that most kids stop believing in Santa once they’re better able to rationalize and acknowledge the unlikeliness of one man traveling around the world overnight­—usually around 8 years old. My sister is 12, so she should already know about Santa then, right? Oh, I’m confident she suspects it, but has never really asked. (How can you get through eight years of school without some smart aleck kid scoffing at Santa?)

And why would she ask? Why wouldn’t anyone wish to believe in this jolly old guy, even just a little bit? Why wouldn’t you want to cling to this symbol of giving and goodness during the holiday season?

This year, give yourself a break from everyday life. Bask in the beauty and delight of Christmas with twinkling lights, surrounded by loved ones. You don’t have to believe in magic to make this Christmas magical.

Something nice starts to happen this time of year. Happy feelings escalate as vacant lots start displaying Christmas trees and Santa’s knee becomes every youngster’s desired destination. Trips to the mall are frequent, hearts beat faster than usual, and our love for mankind intensifies.

S

omewhere in the midst of these joyful feelings and fun activities are disquieting facts and disturbing images that cast dark shadows over our hearts. They appear as stories in front pages of newspapers—stories that describe the plight of the homeless and include appeals for charitable holiday donations. They surface in photographs portraying despair in the eyes of children who look older than their years, with vacant expressions in their eyes and no hope in their hearts; children who know better than to dream of American Girl Dolls and electronic video games, and pray only for warm coats and shoes with soles.

We read these stories and are deeply moved, so we write checks and pull children’s name tags from huge mall Christmas trees and buy them gifts. Doing these charitable deeds during the holiday season mollifies our desire to bring a degree of happiness into the lives of those less blessed than we are. We walk away

feeling righteous, believing that we have fulfilled our duty as spiritual, religious, caring human beings.

There is a tradition in Judaism called tzedakah, a Hebrew word that very loosely translated means charity.

But, while charity involves decision, tzedakah does not—it is an obligation to do what is right and just.

Charity is something we decide to give to the unfortunate to offset their adversities. Tzedakah goes beyond giving something to tide people over; it attempts to get people to once again stand with dignity.

Even the indigent, who are sustained by charity, are compelled to give tzedakah, so that the act of receiving does not leave them without dignity.

I grew up in a spiritual Jewish family where doing for others was not simply a once-a-year holiday occurrence. There wasn’t a day when my father didn’t remind us to share our good fortune with others. He

made it clear that doing for others was not a choice we were free to contemplate. It was something we were required to do as naturally as we were expected to draw our next breath.

I smile today because I now recognize that we were not even remotely wealthy. My father was a farmer—a “gentleman farmer” as he humbly referred to himself—who worked hard and died at the age of 46, never to see the fruits of his labor.

There were many weeks when we went without meat, fish or chicken because we couldn’t afford it.

Instead, we lived on whatever the land produced, Kraft macaroni and cheese, and Campbell’s vegetarian and vegetable soup. But my father said we were fortunate, and that’s what my brother and I believed.

Growing up, it was not unusual to find a tattered vagrant sitting at our breakfast table. My father, who regularly preached to us about the dangers of hitchhiking, would pick up strangers on the road—people who

Then my father would slip a $5 bill into their hand, which was a great deal of money for us back in the early ’50s, and drive them to some reasonable destination.

When my brother grew up and moved to Manhattan, he regularly filled large shopping bags with peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, apples, oranges and bananas, and walked the streets handing out food to the homeless.

As a teenager, I traveled by bus to a neighboring town where I worked summers in an orphanage without pay.

GIVING IN PRACTICE

In our family, doing for others was not viewed as something special; it was a part of everyday living. In today’s complex, dot com world of two-paycheck families, high-interest credit card payments, endless carpooling, interminable supermarket lines, and time-consuming, high-

tech communication devices, we barely have time to do for ourselves, much less think about doing for others.

But there is a simple way to teach our children that we are not solely self-involved. In many Jewish homes, you will find a tzedakah box, which is a kind of piggy bank.

Although decorative tzedakah boxes are popular, any container can be designated to collect tzedakah.

I know someone whose grandmother’s tzedakah box was actually a teapot.

All end-of-the-day loose change from family members’ purses and pockets is placed in this bank. When the bank is full, the contents are donated to a synagogue, a church, or a trusted charity for families or individuals in need of assistance.

It’s so easy to do, and an invaluable example to set for our children.

Maintaining this spirit of giving throughout the entire year not only has the power to enrich the lives of impoverished recipients, it enhances and intensifies the quality of each contributor’s life as well. ■

Captain of mercy:

Retired captain volunteers aboard vessel of hope

“Right place, right time.” That’s how Captain Taylor Perez, 65, of Montrose sums up his life and his amazing 40-year career at sea.

H

e credits the man upstairs for all of his achievements. He shows gratitude by doing God’s work, volunteering with the international charity Mercy Ships, which connected him to his faith family and the love of his life.

Perez has seen the positive impact that Mercy Ships has had on the communities it serves. This Christian-based ministry brings hope and healing to nations via stateof-the-art hospital ships. Patients arrive with large facial tumors, bowed legs, burn contractures, severe cleft lips, blindness and other maladies.

After receiving free surgeries onboard, the patients leave, physically and emotionally healed.

But the ships’ crews do more than provide medical treatments, Perez said.

“Teams from the ship become involved in other nation-building activities, spreading throughout the countryside, helping to teach other future doctors, nurses and medical personnel,” he said.

Retiring from his career as a merchant marine doesn’t mean he’s ready to leave the mariner lifestyle for good.

In fact, he considers volunteering aboard Mercy Ships as some of his greatest work.

SHIPPING OUT

Perez launched his sailing career in 1976. He graduated as a third mate in 1973 from the State University of New York, but back then, jobs for sailors were hard to come by.

He took a few years off before landing a job as third mate on a foreign-flagged ship that transported iron ore from Norway and the Western Sahara to the United Kingdom.

His first years of sailing took him on the huge tanker from Kirkenes, Norway to Nouadhibou, Africa.

After that, he spent nine years on a crude oil tanker transporting oil from the Caribbean to the U.S.

He learned that AT&T was converting a ship it’d bought to lay ocean cables, indicating they might soon be hiring. It was just a hunch, but Perez drove from Jacksonville to Ft. Lauderdale in hopes of securing a position. He did, and he quickly rose in the ranks, stepping into the first officer position after the previous officer had been terminated.

HEEDING THE CALL

Perez spent the rest of his career captaining ships laying and maintaining transoceanic fiber optic cables. He was introduced to Mercy Ships in 1984 when his ship stopped in Hawaii on its way to Okinawa.

Perez met his wife Marie at a Bible study on the Anastasis in 1988. Marie, who was from Sweden, was in charge of housing events, hospitality and other shipboard duties and had been part of the vessel’s crew since the organization’s beginning.

Since its inception in 1978, Mercy Ships crews have provided more than 95,000 free surgeries to people without access to good medical care. The crew of 400 on board Africa Mercy will continue its mission by supplying more than 2,000 free surgeries for patients in Guinea in the next 10 months.

As for the Perezes, they’re selling their home in Montrose and moving back to Cimarron, but it won’t be long before they return to the sea as Mercy Ships volunteers.

In food processor, puree beets and 1 cup sugar until smooth. In small bowl, cover cranberries with hot water.

In medium mixing bowl, sift flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon and nutmeg.

In large mixing bowl using electric mixer on medium-high, beat remaining sugar, eggs, butter and oil 2-3 minutes until light and smooth.

Blend in beet puree. Add orange zest and vanilla; mix until blended.

Add half of flour mixture; beat on low until smooth. Add buttermilk; beat on low until smooth then add remaining flour mixture, beating until blended. Drain cranberries; fold into batter.

Turn batter into prepared pan, spreading evenly. Bake on center rack 45-50 minutes. When done, cake will pull away from sides of pan and toothpick, inserted into center will come out clean.

Cool 15 minutes then invert cake onto rack.

To make Orange-Walnut Glaze: In large mixing bowl, combine sugar and orange zest. Add orange juice; whisk until smooth. Whisk in butter. Add additional juice, if necessary. Spoon glaze over cake while still warm. Sprinkle with walnuts. ■

miles aren’t always visible at medical offices. Then again, Ruth Marie Long and her husband, Carl, aren’t always there.

The Gunnison couple has three new knees between them. Ruth had her right and left knees replaced nearly a decade ago while Carl’s left knee was replaced last year. These life-changing procedures have enabled the couple to go on daily walks without pain.

The Longs recently visited Rocky Mountain Orthopaedic Associates (RMOA) for a routine follow-up exam with Dr. Jeff Nakano, a physician with RMOA since 1983.

Although the inside of Nakano’s clinic rooms looked unchanged, RMOA made a big announcement in September when it officially became part of SCL Health Medical Group, the same health system that operates St. Mary’s Hospital.

The decision creates an exclusive partnership locally between St. Mary’s and RMOA. The group’s physicians only operate at St. Mary’s and all RMOA staff are now employees of SCL Health. RMOA reaps the benefits of joining a large multistate network with more reliable reimbursement rates and insurance contracts, and increased financial support to invest in equipment, technology, etc.

It may sound like a dramatic turn of events, but the plan is for patients to notice very little change, administrators said.

“RMOA joining SCL Health Medical Group will provide significant benefits to both parties as well as to the patients and communities we serve across Western Colorado,” said Ben Koger, executive director of SCL Health Medical Group.

“For example, SCL Health Medical

Group will gain the outstanding knowledge, skill and expertise of the RMOA providers and staff, and RMOA will benefit from the scale and resources of being part of a large, integrated health system and medical group.”

RMOA is the largest orthopedics group between Denver and Salt Lake City, specializing in such things as total joint replacements, broken bone repairs, physical therapy and spinal care.

Patients needing orthopedic care will still visit RMOA’s offices at 627 25 1/2 Road. There are no immediate plans to change the name or look, according to RMOA Practice Administrator Pam Bachorski.

Some patients may see a decrease in cost for clinic visits and follow-up exams because of the different contractual rates SCL Health shares with insurance providers, Bachorski said. Things such as in-house physical therapy, x-rays and MRI scans will still be done at RMOA. “We will continue to work together to advance what we call the ‘triple aim’ goal of health care—improving quality, cost and patient satisfaction,” said Dr. Mark G. Luker, RMOA executive president. “As a single organization, we are confident that we will be able to advance this work more quickly to benefit our patients and communities.”

Dick Van Dyke’s tips and truths about living well longer

The actor-comedian and former star of the long-running television program “The Dick Van Dyke Show” will turn 93 on December 16.

According to his book, “Keep Moving and Other Tips and Truths About Living Well Longer,” his daily pleasures are simple. He enjoys driving his Jaguar and eats what he wants to, even if that’s hamburgers for lunch and a bowl of ice cream in the evenings.

When he asked his doctor if he was eating too much sugar, the doc reportedly smiled and said, “Dick, you’re over 90. Enjoy yourself.”

Van Dyke, who lives in Malibu, California, works out daily and dances through the local supermarket, sings ditties and smiles.

“If I am out shopping and hear music playing in a store, I start to dance,” Van Dyke wrote in his book. “If I want to sing, I sing. I read books and get excited about new ideas. I don’t think about the way I am supposed to act at my age, or any age.”

“I make people smile and laugh and feel good about life,” he wrote.

Just like he has for his fans, Dick puts on a happy face for the world.

But that’s not to say that everything has gone perfectly for him. While filming “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang,” he suffered a serious injury on set and was told he’d be using a walker within seven years. It never happened. He was also an alcoholic for 25 years, but to the amazement of friends and family, he gave up alcohol and cigarettes and improved his health.

Van Dyke said getting older is not a prescription for acting old. His wife, Arlene, is 46 years his junior. They are happy in their marriage, and the age difference is no consideration.

His only real concern, he joked, is that he has term life insurance that expires when he turns 95.

“If I live beyond that, it cuts off and there is no payout,” he wrote. “I didn’t realize this when I took out the insurance 50 years ago. Who figures they’ll live to be 95?”

He said many of his friends ask about his secrets for growing old.

“I haven’t grown up,” he said. “I play. I dance with my inner child and I do it every day. That’s my secret.”

Van Dyke reported that with his health and attitude, his doctor says he should live to see 95 and beyond.

“No one expects me to go anywhere soon.” ■

There’s a new phone scam targeting Social Security beneficiaries. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is warning older adults that scammers are engaging in a caller ID trick called “spoofing” to make it appear that they are calling from the Social Security Administration (SSA). These scam calls are happening across the nation and could be happening here in Colorado.

Here’s an example of what to watch for: Your phone rings and your caller ID shows that it’s the SSA calling from 1-800-772-1213. The caller says he works for the SSA and can increase your benefits payments—all he needs is your personal information, such as your Social Security number.

In other versions, the “SSA agent” threatens to cut off your benefits if you don’t give him the information. Even though the SSA’s phone number appears on your caller ID, it’s not really them.

What can you do if you get one of these calls?

See through Santa’s eyes

By Noah LeVia t started in the late 1960s as a lark, an escapade, an adventure.

I was living in Charlotte, North Carolina, and I was jobless. Oh, I was “self-employed” in the sense that I peddled my handmade macramé belts, headbands, flowerpot hangers and handbags out of a baby carriage. Those were my hippie days, garbed in a tie-dyed shirt, bell-bottomed pants and headband, hawking my wares as I pushed the colorfully string-festooned carriage along sidewalks. Requisite shoulder-length hair and a full beard completed my freak look, as we often called ourselves then.

I

With the Christmas season fast approaching, I was thinking I could use some extra spending money. Then it hit me: I could be a Santa!

After all, those were the days when real-bearded Santas were rare, and with my full beard and long hair, I thought I just might have a

chance in securing a Santa gig for the season. My hair and beard were red, but that wasn’t anything a little bleach couldn’t fix.

So, dressed as conservatively as possible, I approached the manager of a downtown department store and convinced him to hire me as Santa.

It was a Christmas miracle when I look back on it. The manager of an upscale, name-brand department store hiring a hippie off the street who said he would bleach his beard so the store could have a real-bearded Santa? Unheard of!

But it happened!

With help from friends, I homebleached my hair and beard. Unbeknownst to me at the time, I began a career that would last roughly 40 years. Department store and mall gigs gave way to town Santas, and as professional entertainers, my wife and I portrayed Yuletide characters for years in numerous venues as we presented our special Christmas show.

The first few years as a mall Santa remained as the escapade in which they began—a light-hearted lark.

That changed the day a driver had an emergency medical event and drove his car through a mall’s plate glass windows into a group of school children that had just finished visiting Santa and were heading out to board their school bus. I heard the boom, the clatter of glass crashing, and the screams of adults and children.

I suppose I could have remained on the Santa seat without blame.

However, in that instant, the thought arose that I am Santa— and Santa comforts. Those kids needed Santa now.

I rose from my throne, rode down the escalator, and walked into a horrendous spectacle of hysterical children, some lying injured, some standing in shock and sobbing, all horror struck.

About the only thing I remember is kneeling, holding children, soothing them and telling them it would be

BEACON SENIOR NEWS all right. It was as if the spirit of Santa called and I heard and answered, not knowing what I would do or say when I came upon that scene. It didn’t matter. Santa knew what to say even if I didn’t.

From that moment forward, my portrayal of Santa transformed from a trivial escapade into a serious purpose, from a superficial adventure into a meaningful mission. Santa has a profoundly deep empathetic, loving, soothing, quiet side to his merry joviality and jolliness—a side I found that day.

As the years passed, Santa’s spirit and I became more intimately acquainted. I began to see through his eyes, understanding an unfathomable, unconditional acceptance of every person as an equal member within the family of humanity. I recognized a basic goodness within each of us.

Sadly, I also saw an unwittingly misguided ignorance that utilizes Santa as a stern controller who rewards good children and punishes naughty ones. I witnessed a mother staring out a store window so anxious her husband would find a parking spot she completely missed the remarkably beautiful experience her daughter was having with Santa and Mrs. Claus behind her. Through Santa’s eyes I saw the world’s angst embodied in that woman, an anxiety blind to beauty in all its forms.

I watched parents commit unconscious abuse as they forced panicked, terrified toddlers upon Santa in order to get a cute photo.

Will I ever see through Santa’s eyes again? I would not have to bleach my hair or beard now. That suit I last wore in 2010 still hangs in my closet, the boots tucked underneath the robe.

I’ve seen extraordinary sights through Santa’s eyes: an elderly man on the back edge of a large mall crowd saluting me on my throne, troubled teens hugging each other after a Santa visit and jaded adults weeping as, somehow, childhood Christmas hurts were healed.

Through Santa’s eyes I’ve seen hurting and happiness, depression and delight, anguish and awe.

Most of all, I’ve seen benevolence, generosity, kindness and genuine appreciation for others. I’ve seen the good. It’s there for all to see if we look through Santa’s eyes. ■

Redlands Community Center: a vibrant center in

history and the community

Driving down Broadway through the Redlands, you’re likely to pass a nearly century-old piece of local history without even realizing it.

T

he Redlands Community Center is the large Spanish-style building that overlooks Grand Junction, sitting on top of a hill off Broadway, just west of the bridge over the Colorado River. Surrounded by manicured lawns with its back to the cottonwoods, the building was once the centerpiece of one of the first golf courses in Grand Junction.

CLUB TO COMMUNITY

In 1920, a collection of local businessmen erected the building on 160 acres, and the nine-hole golf course and clubhouse opened in August 1921. This golf course didn’t resemble the velvety green courses of today, though. It was made of oiled sand greens because the clay soil made it too hard to insert a wooden tee.

The Great Depression hit the golf club hard, and the property was sold to the Redlands Women’s Club for $5,000 in 1935. The service club, which was comprised of over 60 women from nearly every family that lived on the Redlands, held carnivals and dinners, made quilts and hosted other fundraisers to help pay off their debt.

fore turning it into a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that would continue to serve the community as well as preserve the aging building.

THE REDLANDS WOMEN I worked at the community center in the early 1970s when I was about 13. My great-aunt was one of the Redlands Women’s Club’s original members. I remember serving dinners to the Saturday Night Dinner Dance group alongside the club’s women, who were all much older than me. Each of them has specific jobs as they moved in a long-established choreography around the kitchen, which back then was one big room with a large table in the center and gigantic appliances along the perimeter.

The reigning queen of the kitchen was Clara Ziegler, a diminutive but formidable woman who ran the place like a drill sergeant. She was the last surviving member of the women’s club and died in November 2016 at the age of 93.

PRESERVING HISTORY

The community center was added to the Colorado State Register of Historic Properties in 1994.

Today, the Redlands Community Center Foundation’s (RCCF) mission is to increase community use of the facility and raise funds to restore, maintain, preserve and rehabilitate the building.

The majestic building currently sits on about five acres, as the golf course was sold off long ago.

Large arched windows grace the northeast face of the building, and stained glass has been placed in some of the front door lights. A red tile hipped roof stands out against the white stucco, and hand-laid stone decorates the foundation and massive fireplaces.

The upper level contains the main hall and kitchen, and the lower level has a dressing room, meeting space and storage.

The building is still quite capable of serving the community even after all these decades, and is currently being utilized for business and club meetings, weddings and receptions, private parties, memorials and other social events.

“Because we don’t have a food license or alcohol license, parties can happen however our renting audience would like,” Event Coor-

dinator Elly Conklin said. “They can have potluck suppers or caterers.

You can make it your event.”

The kitchen has catering facilities and the main hall has expansive wooden floors perfect for dancing the night away. The center can furnish tables and chairs for meetings and meals, and has private dressing rooms for wedding parties to prepare. The landscaped grounds are beautiful and suited for weddings, reunions, photo shoots and more.

“I was sending her off with a spirit of peace,” she said.

Webb, a social worker for Hope West, frequently shares her calming voice with patients in song.

“When I sing from the heart to someone who is dying, I feel I’m projecting the meaning of the words,” she said. “You can see both the patient and the family relax.

Singing softly and tenderly, I know I’m giving them a gift.”

Webb cultivates this kindness in her free time with the Grand Valley Threshold Singers, who provide gentle music and moments of grace and dignity in challenging times.

The local singers are part of Threshold Choir, an organization now with 150 chapters around the world. Founder Kate Munger of California planted the seed for this movement when she found courage singing at the bedside of a dying friend. It comforted her, which in turn, comforted him.

Webb witnessed this power of song when she sang with the Glenwood Springs choir to home hospice patients and new moms and babies.

After moving to Grand Junction, she recruited fellow singer and social worker Joyce Deem to start a local chapter, which has been active for three years.

“This is such a fulfilling and special way of serving people in a vulnerable place,” said Deem.

Singers meet Monday evenings, alternating between practices and singing to patients. Songs are simple and short for repetition, which is conducive to rest and comfort.

“Songs are spiritual and not religious, intended to serve everyone,” said Webb.

They have about 25 songs in their repertoire, but they will take requests if they know the songs.

“When the family joins in, it’s a special shared experience,” said Deem.

“It is so relaxing and therapeutic— the ultimate compliment is if the patient falls asleep.”

Singers split into smaller groups of two or three and spend an average of 10-15 minutes with each person.

Choir member Patricia Eble said it’s an honor to be included in someone’s life at this stage.

Renowned palliative care advocate Dr. Ira Byock said threshold choirs and their music is a soul-filling gift that complements medicine.

Singers of all abilities are welcome to join the local group. New members spend the first few months memorizing songs and learning to blend voices, bedside training and awareness.

The following products are recommendations based on my experience with each item. Indeed, these are a few of my favorite things. iPad - There are dozens of inexpensive tablet computers and ebooks on the market, but the iPad is by far the most versatile. The iPad Mini or standard iPad will do 95 percent of the jobs that are most fitting for a tablet.

Smartwatch - There are two great choices when it comes to smartwatches. The Fitbit (Ionic or Versa models) and the Apple Watch. The Fitbit is an underrated fitness watch with support for a variety of apps, and a sub-$250 price. The Apple Watch is a James-Bond-like assortment of features and apps but the price is over $400 for most models.

I love my Fitbit because the battery lasts almost a week while the Apple Watch needs to be recharged every night. Both watches feature heart rate monitoring, GPS, relaxation apps, and allow you to screen calls and control your music from the watch’s touchscreen.

4K TV - Bells, whistles and brands vary, but almost any 4K TV is probably better than the one you have, even if it’s only a couple years old.

Bluetooth headphones Phones, computers and tablets all offer support for Bluetooth peripherals. If you enjoy music, podcasts, movies, video games, or any other multimedia content, a set of Bluetooth headphones can be extremely handy.

Bluetooth headphones are wireless with a range of around 30 feet. That means you can listen to audio in headphones even if the device with the content is located in a different room. I’ll also argue that they are safer than corded headphones, with no cord to get tangled up in the chainsaw. If I want to skip a track or pause the music, I can use the controls that are on the headphones themselves or on my Fitbit.

1. Concentrate on causes with which you are informed. If you are not personally involved, check their website to determine if their mission statement and financials correspond with your interests and priorities.

This is especially good news in December, when 31 percent of annual giving occurs.

2. Determine an amount that is generous but still fits within your budget. Remember the flight attendant’s instruction: “Put on your own oxygen mask before helping others.”

Charitable giving not only supports worthwhile organizations, but it increases your own satisfaction and happiness, and tax savings.

Aging in place Most people like where they are and don’t want to move. In fact, 87 percent of people over 65 want to age in their current home and community.

Aging in place has obvious appeal. Seniors are comfortable in their home and neighborhood, have a social network of friends and neighbors, and know the local grocery stores and doctors. Plus, it saves the stress of moving.

The trouble with aging in place is that most homes aren’t designed for the disabled. Stairs or narrow doorways can make

the house inaccessible. Kitchens, toilets and showers might be inappropriate for users with disabilities, and trip hazards abound.

Aging in place can put some seniors at risk for loneliness.

Many elderly are unable to drive, so if friends and neighbors start moving away or dying, the old neighborhood can start to feel alien and remote.

Tax-wise, it’s more important than ever to plan the timing of your gifts.

Since the standard deduction is now $24,000 for a married couple ($12,000 for single), you may want to “lump” your giving. You can prepay your planned 2019 gifts before the end of 2018, bundling your donations and itemizing on your 2018 taxes. Then in 2019, you can keep donations to a minimum and take the standard deduction.

High net worth individuals benefit more from tax-deductible donations because they are paying income taxes at higher marginal rates. They have more options.

Donor advised funds (DAFs) have become increasingly popular for the wealthy over the past decade.

They are relatively easy to set up and operate, and have tax advantages. In a DAF, donors can set up an account, take a current charitable deduction, and decide later what organizations will receive the funds.

Here are some tips to be aware of before you send off a check.

Whether your gifts land you a name on a building or a simple thank you card, focus on your goals and passions rather than the tax advantages, and your generosity will drive your longevity.

3. Get a receipt and/or any other documents that supports a gift’s value.

4. Consider some relatively “painless” way to support good causes: payroll deductions and appreciated stock or other assets.

5. Tax-deductible donations (check with your accountant for details and exceptions on the following): • A higher IRS standard deduction ($12,000 per person, $24,000 per married couple) has replaced the sum of donations, mortgage interest and other deductions. If practical, bunch your donations in even (or odd) years, itemizing your deductions in those years. Take the standard deduction in the “off” years.

• Only donations to IRS listed 501c(3) organizations are deductible; never gifts to individuals.

• If you received value for your donation (such as a meal or a gift), that must be deducted from your donation.

• You can donate some or all of the required minimum withdrawal from your retirement account without paying income tax (up to $100,000).

• If you volunteer, your volunteer time is not deductible, but expenses related to your volunteering are. ■

any mystery shopping scams require you to pay a fee to become a shopper, which is a sure sign of a fake. But with this particular message, the theft happens when you click the button it mentions. When unsuspecting victims click the button, their computers are either violated or their personal information is stolen.

It’s important to note that mystery shopping itself isn’t a scam.

In fact, it’s a growing industry that businesses use to check on the customer service their employees deliver.

WHAT IT’S LIKE TO BE A LEGIT MYSTERY SHOPPER

When I worked for a major retailer decades ago, my store was mystery shopped. I must’ve been on my game that day because the shopper gave me a great report. I’ve been intrigued ever since.

So when I realized last summer that both my desktop computer and my laptop would soon need replacing, I decided not to use my savings or credit. Instead, I signed up to be a mystery shopper in addition to my full-time job and freelance writing income. It took a while but I learned to weed out the shops that were too much work for the money and found several that I enjoy and con-

tinue to do with minimal time commitment. Eventually, I got my new computers without breaking open my piggy bank, and this time, I’m building up a Christmas account.

Many shops can be contacted from home—and there are perks.

Recently, I called to schedule my car for servicing (and called later to cancel). I have eaten great hamburgers and pizzas for a fee and a reimbursed cost, gotten monthly discounts on cable TV and bought shoes that I was also reimbursed for.

If mystery shopping is something you’re considering, make sure it’s legitimate. Here are a few pointers: • Legitimate mystery shopping companies will never ask you to pay a fee to work for them.

• You also won’t have to pay to see a list of jobs.

• You won’t get rich. In fact, it’s unlikely you’ll even get a base rate of pay or a steady income.

• Real mystery shopping companies are generally member of www.mspa-americas.org, which regulates mystery shopping companies. You can also visit this website to sign up for multiple companies and choose the shops you want to do. ■

Grande River Vineyards: the gateway to Colorado wine country

By Melinda Mawdsley aomi Shepherd-Smith was the proud owner of just one wine glass when she started working at Grande River Vineyards in the mid1990s. Back then, she could barely pronounce the different wine varietals sold through the winery.

It didn’t matter. Like many wines, Shepherd-Smith only grew better with age, slowly learning the ins and outs of the wine business from how grapes grow to the bottling and marketing of every wine produced

“I’ve never been the winemaker, but I’ve worked in nearly every corner of the business,” she said. “I love this place.”

For that reason, Shepherd-Smith

said it’s bittersweet that she plans to retire at the end of 2018 as managing owner and general manager at Grande River after more than 20 years with the company.

Grande River, one of the first wineries in Mesa County, will remain under the sole ownership of founding owner Stephen Smith.

Although Shepherd-Smith didn’t come to Grande River with a keen knowledge of the wine industry, her lifelong interest in fine arts coupled with her nonprofit background as business manager for the Grand Junction Symphony Orchestra for

a decade proved to be a perfect match for the Palisade winery.

In the late 1990s, Shepherd-Smith founded the Hear It Through The Grapevine Summer Concert Series, a family friendly event staged on the vineyard’s lawn during the summer months. Ticket sales from the popular concerts have benefited local nonprofits, such as Mesa County Partners, Child & Migrant Services and Mesa County Libraries.

“I’ve always felt community supports community first, and we have great partnerships within the community,” said Shepherd-Smith.

Earlier this year, Grande River teamed up with the Mesa County Library Foundation to produce a private label wine named Well Read, where a portion of sales from each bottle of the merlot goes to the library’s foundation.

But the concert series has never been just to the benefit of the participating nonprofits. Several of the winery’s employees said they’d be fine with the summer event lasting longer than just a few months every year.

For locals, the concert series is perhaps the most identifiable event Grande River offers, but for Palisade visitors, the location of the winery at 787 N. Elberta Ave., may be the lasting impression.

Easily visible from I-70, Grande River is usually one of the first stops people make when touring Western Slope wine country.

Tasting room pourer Priscilla Ludwig, who wanted to pour for Grande River because of its location, joked that the happiest people in the world walk through their tasting room doors at 3:30 p.m. daily.

Shepherd-Smith said it’s her team at Grande River Vineyards that she’ll miss the most.

She still plans to stop in and taste wine, however, she’s excited for the direction the winery can go with new leadership.

The vineyard’s tasting room is open from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. seven days a week. Stop in to taste Grande River’s award-winning wines, buy a bottle or two, and pass on your well wishes to Shepherd-Smith as she embarks on her next adventure.

“Every day is different,” said Shepherd-Smith. “That’s what I thrive on. It’s an opportunity to be creative.” ■

Waking the sleeping giant:

Pearl Harbor and World War II in America

By Don Johnson f, in a few years, someone were to ask me, “What was the United States like in 2018?” My answer would be far different than one from, say, a Baby Boomer.

I

It is much the same as when I’m asked, “What was this country like during World War II?” I can only answer from my perspective, but I would give it my best shot to present a consensus of what most of my countrymen would agree was the country’s mood in this desperate struggle for survival.

It’s amusing for someone my age to hear some whippersnapper opine that it would be impossible for the U.S. to successfully fight two wars at the same time.

Well, after being caught flat footed and much of our naval power destroyed before we even knew we were at war, we fought, beat and destroyed three major adversaries in Japan, Germany and Italy.

STANDING STRONG TOGETHER

My first realization of our being in a state of war came at a very early age. I was a young teenager when my parents returned from a trip

to town and pulled in the driveway to be greeted by an even younger boy, the son of the grammar school principal who lived a couple of houses down from ours.

He was jumping up and down with excitement.

“The Japs have bombed Pearl Harbor!” he said.

So what? I thought. The Japs were always bombing something.

My answer was quickly forthcoming when I found out Pearl Harbor belonged to us.

That made a difference indeed.

They’d gone too far, and our armed forces would quickly set things right and deal out a proper comeuppance to the little yellow bellies.

(We had not yet learned the concept of political correctness.)

We had also not learned to view the world situation realistically. The truth of it was that we were woefully unprepared for a war for which the Japanese had prepared many years, a situation we could very well allow to repeat itself today.

I remember thinking that the war could not possibly last long enough for me to take a meaningful part.

We watched in horror as the Japanese war machine rolled over our weak Pacific defenses. Island after island fell before the onslaught culminating in the debacle at Bataan and Corregidor.

The humiliation of America was nearly complete. One who did not live through that period couldn’t possibly imagine the mindset of most of the American public back then. To say we were angry is a gross understatement. We were furious, with a strong bloodlust to strike back at the arrogant armies of what we considered to be a backward society.

WAKING THE GIANT

Thousands of young men stormed the recruiting offices, lying about their ages, hiding infirmities and using every subterfuge they thought they might need to get into combat. Almost no one tried to dodge the draft back then.

Working women flooded defense plants determined to do their part in bringing the Asiatic monster to its knees. Rosie the Riveter was as eager to do her part as any GI Joe. Those of us still champing at the bit of what we considered unreason-

able age restrictions volunteered as scrap metal collectors, air defense workers, critical industry workers, wherever we thought we could strike a blow for our country. We endured without complaint (at least not much) the rationing of gasoline, rubber, sugar, meat and other commodities.

From our vantage point of today, the results were easily predictable. The sleeping giant came fully awake. We were hopelessly, perhaps foolishly, patriotic.

For those of us who were actually able to make it into uniform, nothing was too good. Hitchhikers in uniform seldom stood by the road for more than a few minutes before being picked up and whisked on

their way to wherever they wished to go. In trains, buses and streetcars, members of the armed forces were seated before the general public. Restaurants suddenly found that extra table when requested by a service member.

In short, there were many hard times to endure during the war years, but we enjoyed something Americans haven’t at any other time in living memory. We lived in a country absolutely unified in a joint effort to achieve a worthy and difficult conclusion.

No task was said to be too difficult.

No job too dangerous. No goal that could not be attained. No whining about fairness. After all, it was for the war effort. ■

Santa made me do it!

I remember when Santa encouraged my daughters to break our house rule, which forbids them from eating what we call “junk food cereal”—those high-sugar cereals with little nutrition. Actually, the rule forbids me from bringing the stuff into the house.

Well, Santa, who is known for his love of sweet cookies, delivered boxes of sugary cereals to my 3- and 5-year-old daughters one Christmas Eve. My daughters gasped in surprise when they opened the gifts, revealing boxes of the forbidden cereal. The Cocoa Puffs and Chocolate Chip Cookie Crisp cereals made a hit with my daughters—much more than the Care Bear sleeping bags, the Cabbage Patch Kids and the Candy Land game Santa also left.

So who was being naughty this time?

There they were—the forbidden cereals from Santa, which became the center of attention.

Clutching the cereal box tightly, my eldest daughter Emily insisted she could eat the cereal because Santa gave it to her.

What could we say to that? My husband and I decided we wouldn’t take the cereal away from our daughters. The girls squealed in delight and the unsupervised cereal munching began.

While holding the opened boxes of cereal, the girls told their grandpa about the surprise gift Santa brought them. Between their munching, they talked excitedly about the sugary cereal. I quickly reminded them that today was special and tomorrow we’d be back to eating our traditional breakfast: oatmeal and fruit or scrambled eggs.

I wasn’t surprised when they barely ate our traditional Christmas breakfast: ham and cheese omelets and homemade blueberry muffins. Santa gave them a free junk food pass, and they took full advantage of it.

Years later, I remembered how much fun it was when my daughters received the surprise boxes of cereal from Santa. I decided it was time for my grown-up daughters to receive another surprise. I would anonymously send them a weekly gift during December through the U.S. mail.

The first week, the postman delivered a hand-blown, glass heart to them. The box included an anonymous note, which said, “The world is a better place because of you.”

The second week, they received a holiday candle with a candlescaping kit, which included small, ceramic

holiday pieces—a Christmas tree, bell, gingerbread boy and heart as well as tiny pieces of glittery wax.

The anonymous note that was enclosed said, “Believe in the magic of your dreams. You’re an amazing person.”

The third week was the grand finale, and just a few days before Christmas. I imitated Santa’s surprise, which took place over 20 years ago. The postman delivered a gift-wrapped box of Reese’s Peanut Butter Puffs cereal to my adult daughters, including a signed note from Santa, which read, “Everyone needs a little sugar in her life. Ho! Ho! Ho!” The sugary cereal was a hit yet again. It brought back happy childhood memories and created new ones. While we were distracted with the merriment and our memories, my 4-year-old granddaughter, Olivia, gained control of the cereal box. Her arm was up to her elbow in the box of peanut butter puffs as she happily munched on the sugary treat.

Then she asked why Santa sent her mom junk cereal, which wasn’t allowed in the house, and why he sent her a gift since she’s not a kid?

I don’t remember who answered that last question or what was said, but it brought giggles and fun. The house rule banning junk cereal for another generation was broken yet again—at least for a day. ■

Tiara Rado Animal Hospital’s Pet Food Drive fills two pickup trucks The community’s response to the recent Tiara Rado Animal Hospital Pet Food Drive was very generous, with people donating 2,594 pounds of dog food, 379 pounds of cat food, and $1,055 in checks. Over the past four years, Tiara Rado Animal Hospital has collected 6,550 pounds of pet food and $3,200 in cash, which is given to Community Food Bank to help feed pets through the coldest months.

Volunteers needed for holiday meal delivery, companionship to seniors

Volunteers are needed to deliver meals to seniors from Mack to Collbran on Christmas Eve. Delivery volunteers will be able to choose participants by zip code, gather meals, and start their deliveries. Meals will be delivered from 2 p.m.-4 p.m.

This program began in 2008 when Comfort Keepers Owner Ora Lee recognized the local meal programs and dining sites didn’t operate on Christmas Eve, leaving many seniors without a hot meal and alone. In addition to a hot meal, the program provides companionship to those who are alone. Participants can request the company of a volunteer while they enjoy their delicious hot meal. “She” answers, “Okay,” and a floor lamp’s bulb responds. I ask Alexa about the forecast, and then to set a timer as I prepare to make dinner.

My husband wants the score of the football game currently being played in another state.

Do I want to upgrade to the new blob that can make phone calls and have video chats? I wonder. I can do Skype on my computer and FaceTime on my tablet, and the digital phone has speed dials. Do I want the competing device that allows multiple speakers offering surround sound, yet has the same basic function as Alexa?
