The seventh annual Valentine’s Dance, hosted by BEACON Senior News and Hilltop Senior Living Communities, takes place on Friday, February 14, from 7-10 p.m. in the Garden Room at the Commons of Hilltop, 625 27 1/2 Road in Grand Junction.

Bring a date, bring a friend or just bring yourself. Dancers can glide across a real wooden dance floor to the big band melodies of Clark Gault’s Swing City Express.

Hilltop’s finest chefs will cook up a delectable assortment of hors d’oeuvres and sweet indulgences.

“The dance has become something people talk about and look forward to each year,” Hilltop Marketing and Communications Director Mike Green said. “People love the music, food and dancing.

The dance floor is full from the band’s first number to its last. ” The dance is open to anyone age 55 and older, but younger folks are welcome to attend as well.

or those of you who don’t already know, my long-time boyfriend (now husband) Sam and I finally tied the knot at a Parachute ranch in October.

Surrounded by family and friends on the banks of the Colorado River, our wedding was everything we’d hoped for—with a few surprises thrown in (like a bull elk crossing the river while we were taking family pictures).

eeping the romance alive in a relationship requires effort. When women feel their romantic relationships becoming stagnant, they often blame the man in their life for not being romantic enough.

However, 44 percent of men say it bothers them “a lot” that their wife or girlfriend isn’t more romantic, according to a study of 80,000 participants by author Chrisanna Northrup. So why not take the first step, and give your honey the romance they’re craving with these tips: Be spontaneous. What keeps relationships alive early on is the excitement of spontaneity, which lends itself to discovery about each other and new things.

“I feel the same way every year!” she laughed. And Porter is none the wiser.

Laugh together. Men love to be funny, so no matter how corny his jokes, genuinely laugh with him. Not only will your laughter boost his ego, but it’s good for your relationship, too.

Hold hands when you’re watching TV or when you’re out running errands. Kiss your partner on the cheek. When she’s sitting at the table, walk over and give her a shoulder massage. Pat him on the butt. Walk up from behind and wrap your arms around them.

“He likes it when I put my arm around him or hold his hand,” Nancy said about Porter. “He also likes quality time.

Cheryn McNicol is energetic and quick to laugh, with a robust love for people, socializing and fun.

Her enthusiasm is infectious. Her history in real estate sales and her outgoing personality is the perfect fit to get the momentum going for Singles Over 65. Plus, she hales from Grand Junction, so she knows the area.

“I grew up in the Redlands, went to Grand Junction High School, married a boy from Central, had my babies at St Mary’s, divorced and moved to Nevada 1971,” said McNicol, who fits the single and over 65 criteria. “When my granddaughter, Sierra, got a basketball scholarship to CMU, both of my sons and their families returned to Grand

After many years away, McNicol is on a mission to shake-up the Grand Junction social scene for seniors.

Having created a similar and wildly popular group six years ago in Reno, Nevada, McNicol aims to recreate the same fun, hip vibe right here in the Grand Valley. She turned to www.meetup.com to form the group “Singles Over 65.”

This brand new group is up and running, ready for eligible seniors to join.

Until Singles Over 65, there was nothing like it in the Grand Valley, and past experience has taught her that people in this target age range are looking for an outlet to mingle with persons of the opposite sex.

“Men like the company of women and women like the company of men,” McNicol said. “Many men love to cook, and many women like sports and fishing. This group is for people who want to do something besides sitting at home watching television.”

McNicol envisions a group that does more than sitting and talking.

“I see activities surrounding travel, gourmet dinners or potlucks, golfing, bowling, dancing and mu-

sic—there’s really no limit,” she said.

However, there are specific criteria members have to meet to be eligible to join the group.

“Some people are taken aback at first, thinking there are too many rules, but the rules are there for a reason and success speaks for itself,” McNicol said.

The group is strictly gender-balanced, meaning that the membership will always represent an equal number of women and men.

“If we get too many women, more will have to wait until more men have joined,” McNicol said.

In this effort, she is actively trawling for members. Don’t be surprised if she approaches you at the grocery store and hands you a business card. She might say something

like, “I’m not sure if this applies to you, but if it does, there’s a new group in town that you’ll love.”

You may raise an eyebrow— you’ll probably laugh—but if it resonates at all, you’ll head to www. meetup.com/Singles-Over-65.

Applicants must be able to navigate the internet, as online is the only way to join.

A NEW KIND OF SOCIAL CLUB On the website, member candidates fill out a simple questionnaire designed to get to know them and what they’re looking for. Subjects include age, whether you are divorced, widowed or never married, a bit about your background and if you are retired or still working. It then moves onto areas of interest: hobbies, whether or not you like to cook, sports you may follow, etc.

Next, the questionnaire gets into specifics about hosting shared-cost events, then on to travel. Finally, it asks what you want in a relationship: interested in just getting

McNicol makes it clear that Singles Over 65 is a social club, not a dating club, although many members have been known to date.

“This is a small, private club, so people actually get acquainted and everyone in the world doesn’t know where we are meeting,” she said.

One of McNicol’s tried-and-true rules is, “When we sit down together, I make sure it’s always boy/ girl/boy/girl. Otherwise, the whole meeting will be about cooking and cars.”

Although McNicol’s return to Grand Junction is only a year in, she’s motivated and she’s dedicated to improving the social world of singles over 65. ■

Cooking directions: Heat oven to 400 F. Boil potatoes until fork tender, approximately 15-20 minutes. Cut in half and allow to cool.

In bowl, use spatula to combine cream cheese, cheddar, chives, salt, pepper and jalapeño, if desired.

Once chilled, spread cream cheese on half of cut potatoes and sandwich each with other halves. Wrap each potato using half rasher of bacon around cut middle to ensure cheese doesn’t escape.

Bake on middle rack 10 minutes. Flip and bake 10 minutes.

Turn oven to broil. Broil 2 minutes, turn once and broil 2 minutes until bacon reaches desired crispiness.

Tip: Boil potatoes two days ahead. Fill and wrap potatoes 1 day ahead then bake and serve on game day. ■

Knowledge is power: Genetic testing can help you make informed decisions about your health M

any causes of our illnesses are inherited from our ancestors.

Almost a third of known diseases, including colon cancer, heart disease, alcoholism and high blood pressure, have genetic links.

If you’ve prepared a medical genealogy and found that a certain disease seems to run in your family, you might consider genetic DNA testing to help you plan preventive measures.

A genetic test can reveal mutations in your DNA that raise the risk of developing diseases. Positive results for some diseases can persuade people to take preventive action and can help them make informed decisions about managing their health.

Diagnostic laboratories offer up

to 900 genetic tests, which range in price from less than $100 to a few thousand dollars. Unfortunately, your health insurance may not cover testing.

Testing usually requires a blood sample, but may also require hair, skin or other tissues, such as cells from the inside of your cheek.

Genetic testing should be viewed as a fallible tool. A positive result for a mutation doesn’t mean you’ll get a disease. And a negative result doesn’t mean you are immune.

Multiple mutations can cause disease, and multiple genes can be

responsible for a single disease.

Some gene changes can develop without any link to your ancestors, and often occur because you smoke or get too much sun. Sometimes they happen for no known reason. If you decide to get tested, remember that what you learn about yourself could be reassuring or upsetting.

Discuss genetic testing with your physician before diving in. Your doctor may refer you to a medical-genetics specialist trained to interpret the results of tests.

Brain fog? Fatigue?

It could be more than a Vitamin B deficiency

F

atigue is a challenging issue for people, and it’s hard to test for the root cause beyond standard adrenal and thyroid function tests.

While a B vitamin issue can definitely lead to or contribute to chronic fatigue, no one typically checks for choline or phosphatidylcholine (PC) levels.

Choline is what forms PC, a naturally occurring B vitamin compound required to make acetylcholine, your memory neurotransmitter. It’s possible that persistent fatigue and brain fog could be due to low levels of PC. PC is sometimes confused with the fat lecithin, which is used for treating memory disorders such as dementia and Alzheimer’s. Lecithin is found in foods like soybeans, sunflower seeds and egg yolks. The difference is that choline is a com-

ponent of PC, which is a component of lecithin.

Do any of these conditions sound like something you experience?

• Wacky cholesterol ratios. PC may reduce triglycerides, so ask your doctor what’s right for you. I think this type of supplement could be taken along with your statin medication with no foreseeable problems, but make sure to get the okay from your doctor.

• Forgetfulness. PC is used in the body to create more acetylcholine, which is known as a memory molecule. Low levels of acetylcholine are associated with Alzheimer’s disease. Your brain is made of fat and fatty tissue and craves choline-based

• Anxiety or bipolar disorders.

There is limited evidence for PC’s use in tardive dyskinesia and bipolar, but it could help with mood swings and depressive symptoms.

Before attempting self-treatment, ask your psychiatrist or physician.

• Fatigue. In a randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled study published in the “Nutritional Journal,” researchers set out to evaluate where supplements of lecithin would help middle-aged women with their fatigue. The study included 96 women, ages ranging from 40 to 60, who had complained of fatigue. Both groups receiving the lecithin did better after supplement treatment than at the onset of the

study. The group receiving the high dose (1,200 mg per day) fared best.

• Pregnant moms. While this likely isn’t you, feel free to pass this on to the next generation. If you’re pregnant, or want to become pregnant soon, your diet should be very rich in choline because it’s critical for a developing baby.

The risk for neural tube defects (usually associated with low folate) is shockingly four times higher if you’re choline deficient during pregnancy. Supplements like this are available at health food stores and online. ■

s it so bad to have a second piece of cake? Or to skip a week of exercising when you feel overwhelmed by work, grandkids and life? The experts say no, as long as you don’t convince yourself it’s always okay.

But if rationalizing that you can be “bad” here and there becomes a pattern, it can sabotage all your stay-well efforts.

Heart disease is the nation’s number one killer. To defy denial and keep your ticker on track for the long run, I’ve dissected five common heart health self-deceptions.

“The further you are from that optimal LDL level, the less likely a high HDL will protect you,” said Ballantyne.

To lower LDL cholesterol, eat lots of vegetables, fruit, whole grains, beans, nonfat dairy and lean protein. One study found that adding plant foods (salad, vegetables, beans) to a low-saturated-fat diet lowered LDL more than simply cutting saturated fat alone.

And don’t cut out all fats. Eliminating unsaturated fats can cause both good and bad cholesterol to drop. Aim to get about 20 to 25 percent of your calories from unsaturated fats like olive and canola oil and less than 5 to 6 percent from saturated fat, which is found in animal products like meat and dairy.

If you spend an hour or so a day running after your grandkids, you are getting some heart health benefits—a modest calorie burn, an

HEALTH & WELLNESS immune-system boost, and lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels. But it’s the more intense, sustained movement lasting 30 minutes or more that provides the maximum health and weight-loss benefits.

Transform grandkid duty into exercise. If you typically stroll in the park with a toddler, for example, pick up the pace and try to log in 30 minutes. And while your grandchild naps or plays, strength train at home. Build a workout around push-ups, lunges, walking lunges, squats (sitting in a chair then standing up), calf raises (going up and down on your toes when you’re standing on a stair) and tricep dips.

Try to do eight to 12 reps and two sets of each exercise.

You can also use easy at-home equipment such as resistance bands and hand weights.

n Lie #3: I can have two glasses of red wine— research shows it’s heart-healthy. ✔ Reality Check One drink a day can slightly reduce your chances of heart disease. But make that two glasses daily and your breast cancer risk can rise 25 percent. Your odds of ovarian and esophageal cancer go up as well, according to the National Cancer Institute.

One study found that women who had two to four drinks a day took in nearly 30 percent more calories overall than nondrinkers.

Keep tabs on how much you’re pouring: experts consider four ounces equal to one serving, or about one-fourth to one-half of a big goblet.

n Lie #4: I can get by on five hours of sleep a night. ✔ Reality Check:

Skimping on shut-eye is okay every once in a while, but getting fewer

than seven hours a night regularly will make you moody, irritable and less productive.

“Sleep debt makes multitasking and the ability to focus more difficult,” said Clete A. Kushida, MD, PhD, director of the Stanford University Center for Human Sleep Research in Palo Alto, California.

The heart health consequences are pretty steep, too. Getting less than seven hours of sleep each night can increase your risk of high blood pressure, which is one of the leading risks for heart disease and stroke. Moreover, being a sleep underachiever can lead to weight gain.

People who typically get five hours a night also have 15 percent higher levels of ghrelin—a hormone that can stimulate appetite—than those who get eight hours.

Being overweight or obese can increase your risk of heart disease by increasing blood pressure, LDL cholesterol levels and blood sugar.

Excess weight also makes your heart work harder to send blood to all the cells in your body.

To get more sleep, try to go to bed earlier, such as 9:30 p.m. If that’s not possible, try to grab an afternoon nap whenever you can.

n Lie #5: I’m not overweight. I’m just big-boned.

We know it’s hard to hear, but if your body-mass index (BMI), a measure of fat based on height and weight, is 25 or higher, you may need to lose 5 to 10 percent of your weight, Ballantyne explained.

Unfortunately, bone mass can constitute only 4 to 7 percent of your total weight—about 6 to 10 pounds if you weigh 150—and that’s considered too small to affect BMI. n

eighborhood streets, The Riverfront Trail and Canyon View Park are busier than ever with “boomer bikers.” One reason is the thriving enthusiasm for e-bikes, resulting in a 30 percent increase in sales per year.

Once a bicycle purist, I’ve grown to accept the benefits of this revolutionary bike, which gives users a little boost with an electric motor and rechargeable battery. E-bikes are offered in three classes according to the speed and type of gentle propulsion assistance given.

“Baby Boomers have a lot to do with the popularity of e-bikes,” said Diane Manuppella, co-owner of Colorado E-Bikes. “With the many varieties of e-bikes and modifications that can be made, people are able to get back on bikes, even if they haven’t ridden for years.”

Colorado E-Bike customers are calling their e-bikes “life-changing.”

“We see the satisfaction our customers get in range of motion and the ability to be active again,” said Manuppella. “One customer who was previously immobile has lost over 90 pounds.”

E-bikes can be useful therapy for those with cardiac and respiratory challenges, hip and knee replacements, prosthetics, MS, Parkinsons and other limitations. New e-bike designs are both lighter in weight and on the wallet. Options include trikes, recumbent and recumbent tandems (designed to be ridden by lying almost flat on one’s back), fat tires, cross (road to gravel), mountain, road and folding bikes.

“E-bikes take the intimidation out of riding, and take the worry out of distance, hills and headwinds,” said Manuppella. “Instead of thinking ‘I can’t,’ you’ll find yourself saying ‘I can!’”

Walter Cummings, 66, is probably the biggest advocate for e-bikes you’ll find anywhere. In good weather, he rides his e-bike between his Redlands home and the Lincoln Park pickleball courts almost daily. He’s done that for almost four years. With double collapsible baskets, he uses the bike to make runs to the grocery store as well as other errands.

“By using my e-bike two-thirds of the time in town, I save $1,000 per year on gas!” said Cummings.

“I also like the fact that they are eco-friendly and don’t create any pollution.”

Cummings enjoys commuting by e-bike for the outdoor experience versus “riding in a box.” Each charge allows him 25 miles of travel, as he toggles between 17 and 22 miles per hour. With his home at the top of a tall hill, he welcomes the helping hand at the end of a ride.

While traditional bikes may be collecting dust, e-bikes are being ridden more often, further and faster.

The family dog was lying in front of the father, and as the screeching sounds of the youngster’s playing reached the pup’s ears, he began to howl.

The father endured the violin and the dog as long as he could.

Finally, he jumped up and slammed his paper to the floor and yelled, “For pity’s sake, can’t you play something the dog doesn’t know?”

SHOW AND TELL Submitted by Martha Veale A kindergarten teacher gave her class a show and tell assignment.

Each student was instructed to bring in an object that represented their religion to share with the class.

The first student got up in front of the class and said, “My name is Benjamin. I’m Jewish and this is the Star of David.”

The second student got up in front of the class and said, “My name is Mary. I’m Catholic and this is a rosary.”

The third student got up in front of the class and said, “My name is Tommy. I am a Methodist. And this is a casserole.”

THE DRUGGIST Submitted by Walter Cunningham Upon arriving home, a husband was met at the door by his sobbing wife. Tearfully she explained, “The druggist insulted me terribly this morning on the phone. I had to call multiple times before he would even answer the phone.”

The husband immediately drove downtown to confront the druggist

and demand an apology. Before he could say more than a word or two, the druggist told him, “Now just a minute. Listen to my side of it. This morning the alarm failed to go off so I was late getting up. I went without breakfast and hurried out to the car just to realize that I had locked the house with both house and car keys inside and had to break a window to get my keys.

Then I was driving a little too fast and I got a speeding ticket. Then when I was about three blocks from the store, I had a flat tire.

“When I finally got to the store a bunch of people were waiting for me to open up. I opened the store and started waiting on these people, all the time the darn phone was ringing off the hook. Then I had to break a roll of nickels against the cash register drawer to make change, and they spilled all over

the floor. I had to get down on my hands and knees to pick up the nickels and the phone was still ringing.

When I came up I cracked my head on the open cash drawer, which made me stagger back against a showcase with a bunch of perfume bottles on it. Half of them hit the floor and broke. Meanwhile, the phone is still ringing with no let up, and I finally got back to answer it.

“It was your wife. She wanted to know how to use a rectal thermometer. And believe me, Mister, as God is my witness, all I did was tell her.”

MARRIAGE ADDS UP Submitted by Sally Anders A little boy was attending his first wedding.

After the service, his cousin asked him, “How many women can a man marry?”

His cousin was amazed. “How do you know that?”

“It’s easy,” the little boy said.

MIXED UP EMAILS Submitted by Deborah Thompson A couple from Minneapolis decided to go to Florida for a long weekend to thaw out during one particularly icy winter. They planned to stay at the very same hotel where they spent their honeymoon 20 years ago.

Because both had jobs, they found it difficult coordinating their travel schedules. It was decided that the husband would fly to Florida on a Thursday, and his wife would follow him the next day. Upon arriving as planned, the husband checked into the hotel. In his room there was a computer so he decided to send his wife an email back in Minneapolis. However, he accidentally left out one letter in her address and sent the email without realizing his error.

In Houston, a widow had just returned from her husband’s funeral.

The dearly departed was a minister of many years who had been called home to glory following a heart attack. The widow checked her email, expecting messages from relatives and friends. Upon reading the first message, she fainted. The widow’s son rushed into the room, found his mother on the floor, and saw the computer screen which read:

To: My Loving Wife Subject: I’ve arrived.

I know you are surprised to hear from me. They have computers here now and you are allowed to send emails to your loved ones. I’ve just arrived and have been checked in. I see that everything has been prepared for your arrival tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing you then! Hope your journey is as uneventful as mine was.

Super Bowl: It’s more than a football game!

ast November, three months before Super Bowl LIV was to be played on February 2, 2020, FOX TV announced that the game at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium was sold out of available advertising spots. Companies that hadn’t already ponied up the $5.5 million per 30-second message were out of luck.

The Super Bowl has become a spectacular yearly advertising and entertainment event with a football game thrown in for good measure!

Tickets for those who want to witness the event themselves cost an average of $2,500 to $3,500 per seat.

Over the years, numerous music icons have brought a true “wow” factor to the halftime performances, such as Motown superstars Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder and Smokey Robinson; iconic hitmakers like Bruce Springsteen, Madonna, Aerosmith, Lady Gaga, Prince, Katy Perry and Beyonce; and some legendary UK entertainers like Phil Collins, U2, the

Today’s Super Bowl draws a viewing audience of about 100 million. It’s America’s biggest annual sporting competition (although the World Cup soccer games draw more viewers worldwide).

But, for many Americans, it’s more a boisterous afternoon of fun and friendship than a sports contest. More food—and presumably more drink—is consumed on Super Bowl Sunday than any other day of the year except Thanksgiving.

THE BIG ONE However, it wasn’t always this way.

The first such game wasn’t even called the Super Bowl. Played on January 15, 1967, it was officially termed the AFL–NFL World Championship Game. But NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle wanted something a bit punchier—something easy to remember. The Pro Bowl, perhaps, or maybe even The Big One. The name “Super Bowl” originated with Lamar Hunt, the owner of the Kansas City Chiefs. He had

KANSAS CITY vs. GREEN BAY That first game was far from being a sellout. By kickoff time, about 1/3 of the seats at the 94,000-seat Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum remained unsold, because many people grumbled that the $12 ticket price (about $92 in today’s money) was excessive.

And that first halftime show— two men wearing hydrogen-peroxide-propelled “rocket belts” that barely flew off the ground—didn’t hold a candle to the budget-busting, jaw-dropping extravaganzas we have come to expect now.

Two college marching bands paraded. Trumpeter Al Hirt performed. Ten thousand balloons

went airborne. So did 300 pigeons—one of which left a deposit on the typewriter of young sportscaster Brent Musburger.

As for the football game itself, in that initial contest, the NFL’s Green Bay Packers walloped the AFL’s Kansas City Chiefs 35-10, and Green Bay quarterback legend Bart Starr was named MVP. ■

In fact, our state has the highest average elevation in the country, and we get on average more than 300 partially sunny days per year.

Whether we’re growing greens in backyard beds or using cold weather helpers like frost blankets and hoop houses, we’re blessed with lots of days to grow food.

You might be direct seeding greens or starting seeds indoors as early as next month. So in the meantime, enjoy a few sunny winter days getting your garden ready for another bountiful season.

ORGANIZE YOUR TOOLS AND CREATE SPACE FOR GROWTH Taking pride in a workspace can have tremendous benefits to our overall experience. When we get organized, we set ourselves up for more success and a better time in the garden.

PLANNING YOUR GARDEN UTOPIA It’s easy to forget—amidst all the beauty, possibility, labor and jargon bubbling around in the world of

ALIVE & DIGGING gardening—that growing food is incredibly simple. So if planning your garden means choosing seeds based solely on the pictures that most entice you, great! There’s no rule that says you need to know what you’re doing.

That said, more detailed planning helps us maximize resources, optimize our space and help us learn and grow as gardeners year to year. So embrace your own planning style. As long as your planning process works for you, there are no rules.

1. Consider your space and your needs. Understand the possibilities and limits of the space available to you. Work with your environment, not against it. Accept the shady spots (plan to grow greens and tender herbs), the rocky soils (try lavender or Columbines) and the cement (potted plants are friends).

Rather than forcing your garden space to be what it’s not, embrace it, and plan your garden accordingly.

Likewise, understand your own needs. Remember last month’s column? How can gardening support your goals and help you tend to what matters most?

If raised beds will make gardening more enjoyable to you, plan on using raised beds. Prioritize your joy and well-being, and your garden will likely be more rewarding and bountiful.

2. Succession, succession, succession. Succession planting means planting seeds and plant starts throughout the season rather than all at once, in order to give you a longer and more abundant harvest.

Planning out your successions— what you’ll plant, when and where— helps you maximize your space and remember all the plantings!

Optimize your space by choos-

ing a diverse mix of crops. Choose cold-season and quick-growing plants to extend the season, fill in gaps, and keep soils covered and productive, rather than exposed and stagnant. Sow quick-growing crops regularly in small amounts to enjoy harvests throughout the season, rather than getting a big, single flush.

In your planning, think about vertical space as much as you think about the ground area, and consider pairing different plants that will grow together harmoniously.

3. Trust your intuition. So much about gardening is intuitive, and the more we practice the act of trusting our intuition the more in tune with it we become, and the better gardeners we become along the way. If you have an idea or inclination, follow it. A little research can help us turn our inklings into solid plans and our tiny curiosities into big discoveries.

PREPARE THE SOIL Everything above ground starts with the health and vibrancy of the ground. Once the soil is workable and you’re ready to start sowing seeds, prepare your garden beds by loosening compacted soil, mixing in compost and amendments, level the soil, and water lightly to help it all settle in. If you’re feeling fancy, get a soil test and see what amendments your soil might benefit from.

Make the most of living in our sunny state by soaking up some rays while you prepare your garden for a fresh, new season. (Or enjoy the cold weather from a comfy chair, curled up with your ideas and garden plans in the making.). ■

ith Valentine’s Day around the corner, the thoughts of randy young men and women naturally stray to the next logical step: marriage. At one time in India, custom required that the aunt of the groom teach the prospective bride everything she should know about pleasing a man both in and out of the bedroom. In the case of slow learners, aunts would often share the couple’s bed on their wedding night just to make sure the bride got everything right.

On the flip side, the best gift the father of the groom could give his son was assistance by sleeping with the bride before the wedding night.

In China’s Yugur culture, grooms shot their brides with a bow and arrow three times (arrows that didn’t harm them), then broke them off as a gesture that they will stay in love forever.

In Mauritania, Africa, young girls between ages 5 and 15 were sent to fat farms before their wedding to pile on the pounds. Having muffin tops, stretch marks, turkey necks and flabby thighs were ways of telling the world that the bride’s wealthy husband was pleased with her and wanted more to love.

The thought behind this tradition is if a new bride could handle this type of treatment, chances are she’d be able to handle anything that came at her later in life.

In parts of France, newlyweds were forced to eat and drink the leftovers from their wedding out of a toilet bowl. Eating out of a chamber pot was thought to give them

strength for their wedding night.

In the Masai culture of Kenya, new brides are selected by the families of the bride and groom. On their wedding day, the bride’s head is shaved and rubbed with lamb fat, followed by her father spitting on her head and breasts to wish the new couple luck and good fortune.

In Korea, the wedding party ties the groom’s feet together and take turns beating them with sticks and dried fish the night before the wedding. The ceremony, meant to be fun, is supposed to ensure that the groom doesn’t disappoint his new bride on their wedding night.

New couples can always count on being “blessed” in a variety of tried and true traditions ensuring they’ll be prepared to withstand good times and bad.

In America, they’re simply pelted with handfuls of uncooked white rice. In Tudor times, guests would throw their shoes at the bride and groom as they fled their wedding celebration. Anyone hit by these flying projectiles inherited good luck. The Scottish believe that throwing trash at the wedding couple (including rotten eggs and fish) teaches them the value of persevering through hard times, avoiding divorce.

So, does being pelted with fish, shoes and garbage ensure a long life together? It’s hard to tell. No one has ever written about the longterm effects of these cute customs.

But like everything else, life’s in the details. ■

18-time cruisers reveal why cruising is worth every penny

P

hil Wertman was raised on a 480-acre dairy farm. He didn’t think he was the sort of guy who wanted a chocolate on his pillow.

Then, Phil and his wife Sandy went on their first cruise. In 2005, the couple spent 10 days with Princess Cruises touring the coast of western Mexico, an area often referred to as the Mexican Riviera.

“We liked it so much we booked another (cruise) on board,” Sandy said. “The services are phenomenal.”

Now veteran cruisers (their loyalty to Celebrity Cruises has earned them perks such as free laundry service and complimentary cocktail parties), the Wertmans recently took their 18th cruise, traveling through the Panama Canal’s newest locks. It was a bucket list cruise for Phil.

“It’s hard to find a cruise ship that will go through the new locks,” Phil said. “I had to do a little research, but I found one.”

ALL-IN-ONE VACATION Although some people in landlocked Colorado might consider

even a few days at sea intimidating, unappealing or nauseating, the Wertmans and fellow Grand Junction couple John and Linda Lynch find cruising is an idyllic way to unwind and see the world in their senior years.

“It’s not just disposable income,” said Linda.

She acknowledged that while cruises can be expensive, booking two years in advance gives them time to save money. Now that they are retired, it’s easier to book a bigger trip a couple of years ahead of time.

“The reason we do it at this age is because we don’t have kids in school. We don’t have to live by that K-12 schedule. And when you have kids in college, you don’t have any money,” she said.

In addition to their ability to leave western Colorado whenever they want, the Wertmans and Lynches agree that going on a cruise is an opportunity to see numerous places while enjoying superb food, drink and entertainment all in one vacation.

“THE BEST REASON TO GO ON A CRUISE IS THAT YOU GET TO SEE A LOT OF COOL THINGS AND YOU DON’T HAVE TO UNPACK YOUR SUITCASE EVERY NIGHT AND MOVE TO A DIFFERENT HOTEL,” LINDA SAID. “The best reason to go on a cruise is that you get to see a lot of cool things and you don’t have to unpack your suitcase every night and move to a different hotel,” Linda said.

Although the couples have similar reasons for taking cruises, each couple prefers different ways of experiencing them. For instance, the Wertmans pay extra for a balcony room, which makes the room feel bigger and gives Phil a morning coffee spot while Sandy sleeps in.

The Lynches, on the other hand, are more flexible with their room’s location.

THE BEST WAYS TO CRUISE While the Wertmans handle everything themselves when it comes time to book the cruise, the Lynches seek out a travel agent. Linda often uses First Class Travel in Grand Junction to handle all logistics, find better prices, double-check the details and potentially have access to exclusive coupons.

Additionally, travel agents carry extra insurance, giving Linda peace of mind that if something goes awry—a possibility when scheduling a multi-day trip two years in advance—the travel agent will deal with airlines, cruise lines and the

likes to recoup losses.

Linda’s interest in using a travel agent versus Phil’s preference to do things himself also translates into how the couples experience offboard excursions. Excursions are day trips people can take when the ship stops at a port, and are Phil, Sandy and Linda’s favorite part of cruises (John said on-board entertainment was his highlight).

Each cruise line offers an extensive list of excursions. Linda often seeks out the ones that include hiking or biking local hot spots.

Everything is booked and done for her.

Phil, however, wants to find the best excursions at the best price.

He looks to see what the cruise offers at each port and how previous users rated it on www.tripadvisor. com. If people loved the excursion, he often finds a private company that offers a similar—or the same—excursion for less money.

The Wertmans are responsible for booking it and paying for it outside of their other cruise expenses.

SEA THE WORLD This led to Phil’s favorite excursion in St. Lucia. In addition to eating tons of native food prepared at the tour guide’s house, Phil took a mud bath near a volcano and then washed off in a waterfall.

“We took a tour of the island,” Phil said. “We got on a water taxi...

and it took us to my favorite beach in the whole wide world, Jalousie.”

The differences between the couples prove there isn’t necessarily a right or wrong way to take a cruise. As Linda explained, it’s one of those things people always say they want to take but just never do.

Regardless of continent, country or city, the couples have found the diversity of places they’ve visited and the quality of entertainment and amenities to be worth every penny.

“We have only done two cruises with somebody we knew before we got on the ship, but we’ve left every cruise with a bunch of friends,” Phil said. “If we didn’t cruise we never would have been able to see the places we’ve seen.” ■

THE COUPLE’S TOP FAVORITE TRIPS: • The Wertmans loved their Celebrity Cruise to eastern Canada and New England in the fall. It’s a trip informally called “Lobster & Leaves.” They said it’s best if you love eating lobster.

• The Lynch’s favorite cruise—and most expensive—was along the Mississippi River aboard the American Queen paddleboat. They started in New Orleans and went up to Memphis. Expect plenty of excellent music along the way.

We live in a time of great division and upheaval. My readers have watched America win two World Wars and become the leader of the free world. We led the way through the industrial revolution and are currently leading the world in technology. We are rich by the world’s standards. We are powerful.

The world looks to us for answers.

And yet, we have watched a steady decline in our moral values as a society for a number of years.

Those of us who love our country are saddened by the headlines and by the things we see on television. We watched as America entered the sexual revolution and then became enslaved to a world of drug use and decadence. often. Broken homes, mental illness and depression are often the order of the day. Our government, so embroiled in its divisions and internal struggles, seems unable to bring us up out of our problems. We wonder how long we can endure as a free nation if things continue as they are. Like Israel of old, America is in need of a Savior.

But I believe help is on the way!

2 Chronicles 7:14 says this: “If my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and restore their land.” (NLT) I believe God is looking down and answering the prayers of his people. He’s calling us back to himself both as individuals and as a nation.

It’s time for the Church of America to stand and pray. To take her place and say, “Enough is enough!”

It’s time for us as Christians to lead the way in turning back to God. For too long, we have looked to our government to save us. But that’s not its role. Only God can bring us up out of the hole we’ve dug for ourselves. I believe He is calling us back as a people and as a nation.

Back to the roots we were founded upon.

If we are willing, He is able.

I

t’s nice to catch someone’s attention, unless that someone is the IRS. Each year, about a million tax returns are audited, or about 0.5 percent of Americans. That low rate means you probably weren’t audited, but who are the unlucky ones? Even if you and your accountant are meticulous and squeaky clean, enduring an audit is something you wouldn’t wish on that guy who’s talking too loud on his cell phone at the next table.

With limited enforcement funds, the IRS tends to look more closely at tax returns with certain characteristics. None of these factors will guarantee you an audit, but the fewer of them you have, the less likely you’ll be opening a letter from the IRS.

Not accurately reporting taxable income. W-2, 1099s and other tax forms you receive are also sent to the IRS. They look for the numbers to match, so make sure they do.

High deductions, including for donations and medical expenses. If your deductions are much higher than expected from taxpayers with your profile, the IRS agent may probe the details a bit more.

Not taking your Required Minimum Distribution. Remember that after age 70 ½, you must begin to draw down your tax-deferred retirement account. The penalty is sky-high: you’ll pay a 50 percent tax on the amount that should have been withdrawn.

Taking an early Required Minimum Distribution for a reason not included in the exceptions. Legitimate exceptions depend on your type of retirement plan (Qualified s.a. 401(k) or IRA, SEP, SIMPLE, etc). In general, legitimate reasons include corrective withdrawals (if you paid too much), death, disability, divorce, education, equal payments, homebuyers, medical, military and rollovers. The extra tax on taking an unwarranted early distribution is 10 percent.

Reporting big losses, such as gambling losses without winnings or a hobby-like business that always loses money. Generally, if you can’t show a profit in three of the last five years, the business is considered recreational and not subject to deductions.

Claiming day-trading losses on Schedule C (business income and loss). These belong on Schedule D, for capital gains and losses.

Foreign bank accounts must be reported to the Feds. Likewise, if you ever hold more than $10,000 in foreign currency, you are required to report it. No money laundering allowed!

The best policy is to keep records for the required length of time, be meticulous and turn in your taxes on time. That way, the first level of questions will be a boring exchange of back-up information that proves you’re not worth the next level of inquiry. ■

Don’t shy away from having high standards

T

he new year sometimes brings hope for new connections. If your New Year’s resolution is to finally take the plunge into online dating, or if you just want to hit the refresh button, here are some words of wisdom from a veteran online dater.

I know that online dating can be challenging, especially for people over 50. I’ve spent more than a dozen years jumping in and climbing out of the internet dating trenches since my early 50s. Divorced after 22 years of marriage, I initially found the process intimidating. But in time, I found rewards that were well worth the effort.

Whether you’re serious about finding true love, or just looking for a nice person to go out with, here are my top five tips and tricks to help you successfully navigate the unpredictable waters of online dating.

1. Know your deal breakers and

stick to them. Give serious thought about what kind of relationship you want, the type of person you’re looking for and what behaviors or viewpoints are unacceptable. Once

you know your deal breakers, don’t ignore them. I wasted a lot of time ignoring the red flags that popped up when my deal breakers were staring me in the face. Too many times I cut some slack or let things pass, thinking things might work out. They never did.

2. Vet the candidates. Be pre-

pared to spend some time weeding out the fakers and scammers. I hate to say this, but it’s true. As online dating has increased in popularity, so has the number of sketchy characters. In the old days, you’d come across some losers and hound dogs here and there, but today what you find online can be scary. Be careful and don’t rule out running a background check, if need be. If you have doubts, check it out or step away. Trust your instincts.

3. Work the system. Dating sites

make it easy for people to get to know one another. Take advantage of it. You can flirt, like, wink, show interest, favorite and give a photo a thumbs up. You can text or talk anonymously. You can email and find out if someone reads your message, or you can peruse profiles without anyone knowing. No mat-

Be proactive, but don’t be annoying. I’ve been blasted by those who think it’s cute to tag every photo with a flirt or a wink. I’ve never appreciated the flirt harassers and haven’t hesitated to use another nifty feature of dating sites: the block button.

4. Email and phone first. I highly recommend exchanging some emails and talking on the phone a couple of times before going on a date. I’ve made the mistake many times of quickly agreeing to meet, only to regret it later. During these preliminary exchanges, red flags popped up and deal breakers were revealed. I was lucky enough to avoid going out on a date that surely would have ended badly.

But on the flip side, don’t drag out communication too long. If someone hesitates to meet, it might be a setup for catfishing (when someone uses a fake identity to take advantage of another). If someone

refuses to meet, move on.

5. Be a dating badass! I realize

that some of my advice may sound harsh, but I learned from experience. I’ve spent more hours than I care to admit giving men the benefit of the doubt, ignoring their bad behavior and hoping for the best, all to no avail. For my peace of mind, I’ve learned to stick to my guns, quickly dismissing those who didn’t rise above the rest.

Now I don’t hesitate to give a guy the boot the second I realize the chemistry isn’t there, or we don’t have enough in common, or he is rude, or didn’t call when he said he would. It sounds like small stuff, but manners are important. And the small stuff happens all the time.

That’s why you have to be ruthless and keep your standards high.

By being a dating badass, I found the good guys stood out pretty quickly, especially one named Vince.

After dating a year, we moved in together, and I am happy to report it seems to be a perfect match. ■

C

ommitted to the search for a cure for Alzheimer’s disease, the Colorado Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association funded six innovative research projects in 2019, investing a total of $2 million in research projects over the past two years.

The most recent projects are creative approaches to earlier detection of the disease.

Tracking digital biomarkers: This project, led by Dr. Honghuang Lin of Boston University, utilizes digital technology to better detect the earliest changes that may be indicators of Alzheimer’s disease. Individuals taking the standard Alzheimer’s “clock drawing test” use a digital pen that captures data on the person’s movements, hesitations and other indicators, which then can be compared to data from more than 4,000 other study participants.

Researchers will use advanced computer science algorithms (“machine learning”) to predict the cognitive health of individuals taking the test.

Stress impact on black African Americans: The second study, led

by Dr. Antoine Trammell of Emory University in Atlanta, focuses on black African American participants with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) who take the drug Aldactone. Aldactone is typically used to treat heart failure and high blood pressure, both of which are risk factors that make black African Americans twice as likely as Caucasians to develop Alzheimer’s. The study will explore whether the medication will be associated with lower rates of cognitive decline and preserve cognitive performance.

These studies will be funded for the next two years, at which time the results will be evaluated to

determine if the research warrants enhanced funding from the National Institutes of Health.

Support for T-PEP research: The Colorado Chapter’s funds will be matched by the Alzheimer’s Association and the Rainwater Charitable Foundation for the Tau Pipeline Enabling Program (T-PEP). The goal of the research is to explore the many neurodegenerative disorders associated with the abnormal build-up and or spreading of tau protein, and to accelerate the discovery of potential new therapies for tauopathies.

“The funding of these projects is exciting for two reasons,” said Amelia Schafer, executive director of the Colorado Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association. “First, is the enormous potential that each of these projects represents. These are new avenues of research that offer great promise.”

The local Alzheimer’s research funding is unique, Schafer said, because the Colorado Chapter is one of only a handful of Alzheimer’s Association chapters around the country that is directly funding original research with locally-raised funds.

Research projects funded by the Colorado Chapter earlier in 2019 include: Gender differences in Alzheimer’s and gut bacteria. People with higher levels of beta-amyloid in their brain (a hallmark of Alzheimer’s) tend to have higher levels of bacteria in their gut that cause harmful inflammation. Studies

Dr. Hemraj Dodiya of the University of Chicago will study whether gut bacteria in male mice can affect immune cells in the brains of female mice, offering potential treatment approaches that could be applicable for human subjects.

A 3D model of the human brain to enhance research. Much of the research to find a cure for Alzheimer’s is based on testing in mice, which does not automatically translate to human subjects. Dr. Catherine Verfaillie of Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium is looking to apply genetic and technological advances to create an engineered, three-dimensional brain-like structure that mimics many of the properties of living human brains. It is expected that this model will be better at predicting a drug’s effectiveness in living humans.

Protein for the brain to restore brain synapses. KIBRA is a protein associated with human memory, and it has been identified as being important to synaptic function.

Past studies show that people with Alzheimer’s dementia sometimes have low levels of KIBRA in their brains. Dr. Grant Kauwe of the Buck Institute for Research on Aging in Novato, California, will study how abnormal tau proteins can form toxic tangles that damage nerve cells, and whether increasing the amount of KIBRA can improve synapse function and memory, potentially leading to new therapies designed to protect nerve cell networks in people with Alzheimer’s.

All of the projects are being conducted by promising young researchers or scientists experienced in other fields who are bringing new expertise and perspectives to Alzheimer’s research.

ompanies are constantly evolving, changing what they do and how they do it. Typically, they explain that every change they make is to help serve customers better.

But I challenge that claim. I believe most corporations act in their own best interest. All I request is they be honest about it.

For example, my intelligence was insulted when a local supermarket told me they had done away with their customer service counter so they could “better serve the customers.” According to their twisted logic, it frees up the person normally assigned to customer-service duty to float around the store or handle a checkout register. To me, that would be like shutting down the police station so anyone working there can instead help patrol the town.

Now, I’ve gotten a notification from my health insurance provider, which reads, “Good news! We’ve upgraded you to paperless alerts.

We emailed you about it, but just to be sure, we’re letting you know by regular mail, too. Now you can enjoy easier and quicker access to information about your plan.”

I didn’t consider this “upgrade” good news. As my use of quote marks suggests, I didn’t even consider it an upgrade.

Many people welcome paperless options wherever possible. And that’s fine. But this world shouldn’t be one size fits all. I prefer the paper option.

I don’t want to open accounts at the website of every entity I do business with and have more passwords to keep track of, especially when the passwords I want to use are rejected for not being sufficiently complicated.

I don’t know about you, but I get far more junk emails than junk paper mail. I don’t like sifting through electronic clutter. I gave the insurance company an email account I look at about once every

six months; it’s what I give out to places that enjoy generating automated emails.

If something is important, pick up the telephone and call me, or better yet put it on paper and send it via the post office. I’ll pay much more attention, and I’ll probably read the news faster than if you send it electronically.

In tiny print at the end of the note from the insurers, they wrote, “You may opt out of this arrangement anytime by updating your communication preferences online or calling us at the Member Services number on your ID card.”

Here’s my interpretation of how this note from the insurance company would read if it were written honestly: “We have decided to save money in postage by sending you all our future unsolicited communications electronically. So get used to going to the email account you hardly ever look at and that is too cluttered with automated messages to even bother with. However, we acknowledge the importance of continuing to receive premium monthly payments from you, so we’ll still send those notices by post.

We have to give you a way to opt out, but it helps our bottom line if you don’t. So if you want out, go dig up your insurance card and hunt for the right phone number, because we’re sure not going to make it any easier for you by putting our phone number on this notice.”

Again, I don’t mind the company acting in its own best interest. I merely mind the pretense that it’s for my own good.

I dialed them right away and explained I had just been “upgraded” to a paperless experience. However, I added, “Please downgrade me back to a paper experience. It will make my life so much easier.”

They chuckled at my use of “downgrade,” but agreed to do so.

For that, I salute them. ■
