In June, the BEACON will present you with a myriad of suggestions on places to go and things to do. What we’d really like to know from you is what to include and what not to include. Please send your suggestions and/or old travel photos to:

One such missive implored me to “Be the first with courage to print the truth!”

To them, the truth was the increasingly noticeable, but astonishingly unreported presence of alien spacecraft seen monitoring the increasing tensions in the Ukraine, which has something to do with a recent airplane flight that was beamed out of midair by an alien spacecraft and the passengers of which are now being held hostage until a peaceful solution to the conflict is found. Say what?

The only thing that I can attribute this increase of such letters to is the recent legalization of marijuana. May your mailbox be devoid of bills and bad news and full of letters as entertaining as the ones I get.

May 2014 Boomers often possess relatively high education levels and a broad range of skills, talents and experience more so than previous generations. They also bring with them new expectations when it comes to volunteering.

Recruiting baby boomer volunteers requires nonprofit groups to boldly rethink the types of opportunities they offer. What motivates and is meaningful to boomers differs from other generations.

Boomers want to be seen as an integral part of the organization’s success. They want to use the skills they are bringing from their past jobs or experiences, and see how they are helping accomplish the organization’s mission in a tangible way. Boomers seek unique and challenging opportunities that offer flexibility to serve within their active lifestyles.

Boomer volunteers also want to be kept busy. Busy volunteers, those who appear most attached to and passionate about their volunteer work, are more likely to be committed long term. They want to continue learning and teach others what they know. Their volunteer retention rates are highest for those whose volunteer activities are professional and managerial, or when they involve tutoring, mentoring and coaching.

Boomers expect volunteer opportunities to be broad and flexible, as well as technologically advanced.

Incentives are more meaningful to boomers than recognition for hours served.

In sum, we know that boomers have big hearts, just like previous generations. For long-term commitment, do the research, talk to people, prioritize your skills and passions, discover what motivates you and seek out the organization with the best fit.

Here are four examples of area nonprofits in need of volunteer help that meet boomer expectations.

John McConnell Math and Science Center “We could not do business without volunteers,” John McConnell Math and Science Center Volunteer Coordinator Bambi Harmon said. “We are a hands-on math and science center so we need volunteers to assist our

They share their love of working with children and the excitement they create with science.”

The math and science center is also looking for people who are willing to speak at local clubs and organizations to encourage volunteering. No knowledge of science or math is required, only the willingness to work with people, especially elementaryaged children.

To accommodate boomers and their busy lives, the math and science center offers flexible two-hour shifts, which volunteers can pick themselves. Volunteers benefit by seeing the excitement in children, and how adults are re-discovering their childhood.

Habitat for Humanity Habitat for Humanity of Mesa County is also challenged with finding baby boomer volunteers, according to ReStore Volunteer Coordinator Allison Anderson.

“We are a volunteer-based organization,” Anderson said. “Having volunteers allows Habitat to focus its dollars on building homes. The work we do provides a tangible result in changing lives in our community. It is a great feeling to know that we are helping end poverty, housing one family at a time.”

The Habitat ReStore keeps volunteers busy with a variety of volunteer options, from customer service to pricing to sorting books or helping schedule donation pickups. Volunteers are also needed at the construction site and on support committees.

“We are fortunate to be able to offer flexibility that allows the volunteers to work the hours and days that fit best with their schedules,” Anderson said.

HopeWest HopeWest needs volunteers of all ages and walks of life to help them carry out their mission, according to Volunteer Services Program Manager Chelsea Jensen.

“Our volunteers help profoundly change the lives of those facing serious illness and grief, one family at a time,” Jensen said. “Volunteers at HopeWest make a huge difference in the lives of our patients, the families of those patients and our staff. We wouldn’t be able to provide the quality of life that we do for our patients without our dedicated volunteers.”

The variety of volunteer needs at HopeWest is wide and varied, and accommodates volunteer schedules and lifestyles.

Volunteer opportunities include patient companionship, hairstylists and barbers, massage therapists, volunteers at the Heirlooms for Hospice stores, and one-time assignments such as running errands for patients or giving caregivers respite.

Foster Grandparents “Foster grandparents make a real difference by providing invaluable attention, fostering confidence and by being positive role models and mentors for children,” Foster Grandparents Program Coordinator Tanya Fink said. “They help busy teachers provide much needed one-on-one time with children who might not otherwise get it, and be a valuable asset in boosting a child’s proficiency.”

The Foster Grandparents program for elementary through high school youth believes children benefit from consistent relationships, and works hard to find a schedule that works best for both the volunteer and the school. Volunteers who love children get hooked. They feel appreciated, loved, and know they are helping future generations.

finds inspiration at fast food restaurant

L

ocal artist Tina Turner, 65, claims that she gets her best ideas at Taco Bell.

“That’s where I got the idea to try painting with a fork,” she said, adding that she goes to the restaurant frequently for lunch and inspiration.

Turner is mostly a self-taught artist. She took a couple of art classes in high school, but her interest in art is just a part of her nature. It is an interest she hones with practice and a fearless willingness to try new techniques.

One of the unique products of her creative ideas is a series of painted flower planters. These whimsical pots are actually made from recycled tires that she turns inside out, and

paints with a special kind of paint that sticks to rubber. The pots are brightly colored with floral landscapes, Denver Bronco logos or any number of fanciful objects. Turner says that she has painted over 1,900 of these planters over the past two decades. She also uses the tires to create garden ornaments, mostly tropical birds.

From her studio at 1227 23rd St., Unit 105, in Grand Junction, just across North Avenue from the V.A. Hospital, Turner offers a variety of arts and crafts classes, including painting, quilting, crocheting, knitting, cross-stitch and embroidery.

Classes are offered on Sundays, Mondays and Thursdays. The cost of a painting class is $20 and includes all

supplies. She rarely teaches from a tight syllabus, preferring her class to have an air of spontaneity. She also welcomes her students’ creative ideas. Class size varies. Sometimes there is only a handful of students and sometimes there are as many as 20. She prefers the smaller classes as it gives her more time to work one on one with the students, giving her a better sense of where their creative energy wants to go.

Turner has always tuned in to the energy of the people around her.

She’s focused on it. She’s trained to.

In addition to her artistic pursuits, Turner is also a massage therapist.

Grill or pan sear the pork chops that have been seasoned with salt, pepper and granulated garlic on both sides. Cook the chops until they are mostly done, but still slightly undercooked. Pull them off the heat and allow them to rest.

Meanwhile, in a large pan with olive oil over medium high heat, cook the onions and bell peppers. Cook for two to three minutes until they start to soften. Add the zucchini. Cook another minute. Add the garlic and salt and pepper to taste.

Add the salsa and peach preserves/jam. Mix well and bring to a simmer. Add the cilantro and black beans, stirring gently.

While simmering, slice the pork chops into strips or any desired size. Add them to the pan along with any juices that may have escaped while slicing. Continue to simmer on medium heat for three to five minutes or until the pork is thoroughly cooked.

Serve over rice, garnished with more freshly chopped cilantro.

Advice Column for the Over 50 Crowd

By Gayle LagmanCreswick Dear Old Bag: I find the title of your advice column extremely offensive. It is an outdated stereotype and has always been offensive. It portrays women in a negative light.

I know you won’t change it but I am new to the area and I’m shocked by the small-mindedness so much that I turn the page quickly when I see your column. Signed, BN Dear BN: Yikes! It takes a good sense of humor to like my title. I am thinking perhaps people in Colorado have a better sense of humor than those in some other states. It is time again for me to explain how “The Old Bag” came to be. But it got your attention, didn’t it? O.B. Dear Readers: Every once in a while I get questions about how the title of my column came to be. Here is the story again. Years ago, as a regional officer, I had an office in a retirement community. One day, while waiting for the elevator, I saw three women sitting on a bench. They visited loudly enough for me to hear. One woman asked, “Who is that woman?”

Another replied, “I don’t know, but she sure looks like an old bag.” Hearing this, I looked around. I was the only other person around. They had to be talking about me. I stepped into the elevator and when I exited, I proceeded to the restroom and looked in the mirror. “Egad!” I said to myself.

“You do look like an old bag.” And then I smiled and I no longer looked like an old bag. From then on I tried to smile more. I told this story to my friend Peg, who laughed her head off. From then on, when she called my home, she asked to speak to the Old Bag. As I prepared to write the column I thought “Ask the Old Bag” would get more attention than “Dear Gayle.” And so it was born. O.B. Dear Old Bag: I am 70 years old. I am still working part time, I

take classes and am very active in many endeavors.

However, I have no relatives in this country, and I want to be prepared for the future in case I need care.

I mentioned to a friend that I was thinking of moving to an independent retirement community and she had a fit. She said, “You are too young and too active.

Don’t even think about it.” Now I am having second thoughts. I’d like to know what you think about it.

Signed, Having Doubts Dear Having Doubts: First, I applaud you for planning ahead. Many are caught unaware when they have unexpected needs. I could give you the sales pitch but instead, here are some points, which I have learned over the years: • If you wait until you need care, you will not qualify for an independent retirement community situation.

• Many people living in these communities still work and almost all volunteer.

• You are free to live your life the way you want to. You may participate in their programs or in your own.

• Most people living in a retirement community often say they wish they’d moved in sooner.

• I prefer a continuous care community with all levels, so if you do need care, you won’t have to move again.

That’s how Bob McGary, 70, explains the uniquely personal tribute he pays to veterans each year on Memorial Day and Veterans’ Day. The Wall of Heroes is on proud display at Lois’ Place, a family diner in Grand Junction that Bob and his wife Lois own and operate.

Both McGarys are from military families and Bob served in the Navy. About a decade ago, the McGarys decided they could do something meaningful to show their pride in their legacy of service.

“My parents are buried in Arlington Cemetery,” Bob said. “I always loved how a flag was flown by each grave, and I wondered what we could do along those same lines.”

“Those same lines” turned out to be a waving frame of red, white and blue lines of ribbon, and the Wall of Heroes was born.

The McGarys started with their own fathers. Customers and staff were so moved by this personal expression of love, pride and gratitude that they asked if they could add to it. The McGarys were pleased to accommodate their requests, and the wall continues to grow. The criteria are that the certificates show friends and relatives of customers or staff who have passed and who served in any branch

of the military, in any capacity.

“Rank and pay grade don’t matter,” Bob said. “The only thing that matters is that they served. These are common people who answered the call to duty.”

Each 8-by-10-inch poster tells the truth, but not the whole truth.

For that, you have to chat.

For instance, you can see that Viola Holt was an Army nurse.

What you can’t see is that she worked in the burn unit at Walter Reed Hospital treating German POWs with such care and kindness that many of them kept in touch with her after the war.

The poster for Sho Koizumi shows that he was part of one of the most highly decorated Army units in World War II. What it doesn’t show is that while he was fighting valiantly for his country, his parents were forced to live in a Japanese relocation camp.

“Part of our joy is educating people,” Bob said.

He spends hours talking to family members, listing their loved ones’ military statistics, and finding the proper icons to indicate their achievements.

Brave veterans from all military branches and most wars from World War II to Iraq and Afghanistan are represented, with their respective medals and badges. He also loves talking with customers who come in and ask about the stories behind the people.

May 2014 All the posters have a personal story. Some hit closer to home than others. From the poster for Paul Rose, you can see that he was killed in action, earning a Purple Heart and a Combat Infantry Badge. What you can’t tell by looking is that Rose was one of Bob’s childhood friends.

“I had lost touch with Paul and always wondered what happened to him,” Bob said. “Then when I was back in San Diego once, I took another friend to the Vietnam memorial there, and I saw Paul’s name. Shocked and saddened, I tracked down his brother and learned that he had died in action.”

Of course, by now, everyone’s story is personal to the McGarys.

They have seen customers come in and ask others if they would mind changing tables so they could sit and eat by their parents. So far, nobody has refused that simple and heartfelt request. Hearing such comments as “How did you get that picture of my grandfather?” and “Just wanted

www.BeaconSeniorNews.com to eat lunch with my dad” reflect a deep love of family and longing that touches everyone.

The two military holidays are not where it stops when honoring veterans at Lois’ Place. Every week, two different veterans’ posters are featured on the diner’s big-screen TV, along with the weekly menu specials and other items of interest.

“We never dreamed it would take off like this,” Bob said of their pet project. “It’s really gratifying to hear the stories, see people’s reactions, and pass along our pride of our country and its military.”

Almost a saint

M

y mother is 91, blind, has diabetes, arthritis, Parkinson’s, mild dementia and heart problems, but besides that she’s in perfect health.

I visit her three times a week at her assisted living facility. Sometimes I only stay for a few minutes but I still count it as a visit because I want to think of myself as a good son. And when I bring her bottles of juice or vitamins and the caregivers say, “Oh you got the good kind,” I feel like I am almost a saint. I know, I’m acting like an idiot trying to build up points for myself, but that’s who I am.

I’m worried that the dementia is getting worse. My mom tries to hide it but she sometimes gets confused about what’s going on around her. To help keep her mind sharp I always try to have a conversation with her to jog her memory. I don’t mind doing it. Like I said, I’m almost a saint.

We usually talk about when I was born and where I grew up.

“Do you remember what we did there for fun?” I ask.

My mother nods but doesn’t answer.

“We went to the movies,” I tell her.

“In those days there was a double feature and a cartoon and I remember I got in for a quarter.”

“Movies are $2 now,” she says.

Of course I don’t correct her. Like I said, I’m almost a saint.

“We also saw many plays,” I tell her.

“Yes, we went to plays.”

I can tell she just repeats what I say so I ask, “Do you remember what kind of plays?”

She thinks but doesn’t come up with an answer.

“Musicals,” I say.

“Musicals,” she repeats.

“Yes,” I say, “we went to musicals like ‘Oklahoma’ and ‘South Pacific.’”

Then I start to sing, “OOOklahoma…”

“You’ve got a terrible voice,” she says and laughs.

My mother had a biting sense of humor and I’m glad that she still has

it. And she’s right: I do have a terrible voice.

“Do you remember the name of the tuxedo store that you and Dad owned?” I ask.

She shakes her head so I say, “Ace Formal Wear.”

“Ace Formal Wear,” she repeats.

“Why’d you name it Ace?” I ask.

“So, uh, it would be first in the, uh, phone book.”

“Right! And everybody who came was happy because they were renting a tux for a wedding,” I add.

“Yes, it was only later that they got miserable,” she says while laughing. As I said, my mom has a wicked sense of humor.

As she talks she becomes more and more engaged and remembers a bunch of stuff. We talked about going to the fair and eating hot dogs. I was feeling pretty good about myself. I was almost a saint.

Unfortunately, near the end of one particular visit she told me that Sy came yesterday.

Uh-oh. “I’m Sy,” I replied.

I hated that she got mixed up and didn’t realize that all this time she was talking to me, her son.

“You’re Sy?” she asked.

“Yes, Mom, I’m your son, Sy.” And I could see by my mom’s face that she knew she blundered and that her jumbled mind had betrayed her.

I should have stayed longer but it’s hard seeing my mom like this, so I said I had work to do, kissed her on the forehead, and left. I tried to exit by the side door so people wouldn’t see that I left so soon. After all, I had to keep up my saintly image.

On the way out, I was stopped by an elderly man.

“Are you Flora’s son?” he asked.

I nodded, trying to get out of there as quickly as possible, but he kept talking, “She’s a very nice lady. I spoke to her yesterday. By the way, my name is Sy, too.”

I may be almost a saint but I’m a complete idiot. ■

He then addressed the men.

“Can you name and describe your wife’s favorite flower?”

Frank leaned over, touched Ann’s arm gently, and whispered, “Gold Medal All Purpose, isn’t it?”

And thus began Frank’s life of celibacy.

Too damn old Submitted by Pamela Coe Another year has passed and we’re all a little older.

Last summer felt hotter and winter seems much colder.

There was a time not long ago when life was quite a blast.

Now I fully understand about “Living in the Past.”

We used to go to weddings, football games and lunches.

Now we go to funeral homes and after-funeral brunches.

We used to have hangovers, from parties that were gay.

Now we suffer body aches and while the night away.

We used to go out dining and couldn’t get our fill.

Now we ask for doggie bags, come home and take a pill.

We used to often travel to places

near and far Now we get sore asses from riding in the car.

We used to go to nightclubs and drink a little booze.

Now we stay home at night and watch the evening news.

That, my friend, is how life is, and now my tale is told.

So enjoy each day and live it up before you’re too damned old!

Comfortable in my new skin Submitted by Don Cameron A married couple was in a terrible accident where the man’s face was severely burned. The doctor told the husband that they couldn’t graft any skin from his body because he was too skinny. So the wife offered to donate some of her own skin.

However, the only skin on her body that the doctor felt was suitable would have to come from her buttocks. Owing to the sensitive nature of the situation, they all agreed that they would tell no one about where the skin came from.

Submitted by Ralph Baldwin A golfer set up his ball on the first tee, took a mighty swing, and hit his ball into a clump of trees. He found his ball and saw an opening between two trees he thought he could hit through. Taking out his 3 wood, he took another mighty swing. The ball hit a tree, bounced back, hit him in the forehead, and killed him. As he approached the gates of Heaven, St. Peter saw him coming and asked, “Are you a good golfer?”

The man replied, “Got here in two, didn’t I?”

The man looked at the genie and said, “Huh? How can I be getting a third wish when I haven’t had a first or second wish yet?”

“You have had two wishes already,” the genie said, “but your second wish was for me to put everything back the way it was before you made your first wish. Thus, you remember nothing, because everything is the way it was before you made any wishes.

You have one wish left.”

“Okay,” said the man, “I don’t believe this, but what the heck. I wish I was irresistible to women.”

“Funny,” said the genie as it granted his wish and disappeared forever.

“That was your first wish, too.” ■

Palm Sunday Submitted by Nancy Finley It was Palm Sunday and because of strep throat, Sue’s 3-year-old son had to stay home from church with a babysitter. When the family returned carrying palm branches, he asked what they were for.

“People held them over Jesus’ head as he walked by,” his mother said.

The boy fumed. “The one Sunday I didn’t go and he showed up!”

To relive another chapter of the story, clamber aboard the Elizabeth II, a sailing ship representative of seven British vessels that arrived during the 16th century.

Costumed interpreters describe the small craft, and entertain landlubbers with dramatic tales of the perilous voyage, speaking in a thick brogue that echoes the dialect of that time.

The most famous attraction on Roanoke Island is the Lost Colony, a something-for-everyone drama that entertains with special effects, daring action, comedy, music and dance.

It relates the true story of the disappearance—no one knows where or why—of the 116 men, women and children who settled in the New World in 1587.

Further south in Hatteras Village, the aptly named Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum has exhibits that chronicle the tragic tales of more than 2,000 ships that met their fate on the treacherous offshore shoals.

Many were sailing vessels that went down during the 18th and 19th centuries. Parts of several shipwrecks are visible today along beaches or in

shallow water at low tide.

Among other vivid exhibits at the museum are displays about the Civil War ironclad U.S.S. Monitor, ship bombing demonstrations by General Billy Mitchell off the Cape Hatteras coast in 1921, and lifesaving and rescue operations. And of course there’s a section devoted to the notorious Blackbeard who, after his life of marauding, was killed in the area.

Lighthouse buffs will think they’ve gone to heaven with three towers that mark this stretch of the Outer Banks, all of which were first lit in the 1870s. The Cape Hatteras light, the tallest brick beacon in the country, and the Currituck Beach lighthouse are open for climbing from spring to fall.

If mounting the 257 steps of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse isn’t your idea of enjoyable exercise, there’s a list of other pursuits that may be to your liking. They range from hiking to hang gliding, kayaking to kite boarding, sailing to surf boarding, along with fishing and crabbing. Oh yes, and my favorite beach pastime: relaxing on some of the finest sand anywhere with a good book.

Create a garden journal

S

pring has sprung and a gardener’s thoughts turn to compost, mulch, seeds and bedding plants. They also turn to how great, or not, last year’s garden was. Which kind of chard did you plant? Which tomato plants produced the most? What crops were a total loss? And why? If you can’t remember, it isn’t creeping old age that’s at fault. It’s lack of planning.

Instead of hoping you’ll remember which of this year’s plants did the best, create a garden journal.

Journals can be bought at nurseries and online, but they may be all style and little substance. A three-ring loose-leaf binder will work just as well and will give you lots of leeway to add things to it. Lined paper or punched copy paper both work well for keeping track of material you need to reference. Pocket dividers hold seed packets, full, partially used, or empty, which you can use to plan next year’s crops. Cut out the companion planting guide from the BEACON’s April issue and keep for future reference.

When you plant your garden this year, make a map. It doesn’t need a compass rose or an inch-per-foot scale, just a rough drawing of what you plant where. If you plant both Nantes and Chantenay carrots, which one yielded the largest or tastiest crop? Make a note.

Make notes when seeds sprout. A simple reminder of plant, date and weather conditions will suffice, but why not also write about how excited you are to see the first pea sprout unfurl from warming earth? What does the first tomato taste like after a winter of supermarket “vine ripes?”

Take photos and paste them into the journal. In deep December they’ll remind you of summer and sun, just when you need a seasonal pick-me-up the most. They also document how well your plants grew and produced.

It’s also helpful to note when the last killing frost occurred. Around here it can happen as late as early May. These memos might remind you

to wait to set out the tomatoes until later in the month. When did the first fall frost make its appearance? What survived and what didn’t?

How much rain fell and when? Was it enough to keep the garden growing or did you need to irrigate or water? Downpour or drizzle? The National Weather Service, www.weath er.gov, stores a wealth of information on present and past conditions, and you can pull up specific information about Grand Junction, Delta and Montrose.

Do you notice a lot of honeybees, bumblebees, or wasps around certain blossoms? They all help pollinate our crops, as do moths, butterflies and other insects. If you plant things that attract them, chances are they’ll visit the other bloomers and help spread the health, so to speak. If slugs made supper out of the lettuce and Mexican bean beetles breakfasted on the melon leaves, what did you do to keep them away? Note which pesticides, either natural or manmade, worked and which turned in less than stellar performances.

Keep track of firsts and lasts. When did the first peach blossoms come out? When did you harvest the first cucumber? What did your first spinach salad taste like? When did you sauté the last of the summer squash?

When did you pull the frosted remnants of veggies and flowers? How did the last bouquet of asters brighten up the living room?

Although you use your journal to record facts, it can also rest your soul. Take a lawn chair out to the pea patch on an early summer morning and jot down not only what’s up, but the satisfaction of creating something that can give you and your family so much pleasure. Sit out on a golden evening and record what it feels like to see weed-free flowerbeds and smell the sweet scent of roses on the breeze. A hard hour’s work with the hoe can transform into satisfaction with a job well done, so give yourself a pat on the back on paper. You deserve it. ■

Want to foster healthy, active spaces in your own home and community? Stewart offers a few tips:

1. Extend the home Adding porches, patios or balconies improves access to the outside world.

This provides great health benefits, ranging from maximizing natural light to extending living spaces.

2. Add strategic seating Strategic seating is another interesting trend design professionals are employing to encourage movement in and around a home or community.

For example, seating in the middle of spaces that mix residential, dining and entertainment establishments ensure people need to get up and walk to those services before enjoying

them. In other communities, areas designated for more quiet activities, like reading, are on the rise.

3. Sleep-friendly bedrooms Ensure your bedroom promotes healthy sleep by making it a tranquil place. Avoid sleeping in a room that is along a busy street.

Install soundproof windows and use drapes. Leave the entertainment center out of your bedroom.

4. Breathe quality air An easy, but often overlooked, solution for ensuring better health, is keeping air quality high. Fresh air aids sleep and lessens the occurrence of diseases like asthma. Simple ways to improve air quality include: • Finding the optimum setup to promote fresh air flow and ventilation in a building.

• Regularly replacing and cleaning filters on air conditioners and heating systems.

• Confirming radon and carbon monoxide detectors are present and in working order.

These are just a few examples of how design can affect health. You can make your health a top consideration alongside visual appeal and functionality.

n 1913, conditions for widows and orphans were almost as dire as they were in Charles Dickens’ day. In the burgeoning industrial age, men in factories and foundries, mills and mines, risked and lost their lives providing materials demanded by consumers. Yet there was no provision made for their wives and offspring. That was until the Loyal Order of Moose, a fraternal organization founded in 1888 by Dr. John Henry Wilson, a Louisville, Kentucky physician, decided to create a city for children. Thus Mooseheart, the brainchild of member James J. Davis, was born. Moose members bought two adjoining farms west of Chicago, envisioning a homelike atmosphere instead of the warehouse conditions that existed in most orphanages of the time, where children of deceased members could be housed, fed and educated in comfort.

On July 27, 1913, 11 children aged 2-12, gathered in the shade of a Ring-

ling Brothers circus tent rented for the occasion and waited for United States Vice President Thomas Marshall to address them. A stern opponent of orphanages, of which he’d seen many as governor of Indiana, Marshall looked over the children and the several thousand people who had come for the dedication and thanked God that the organization had reached out its hand in love and loyalty to the bereft children of Moose members. Today, Mooseheart is going strong, caring for and educating children from unstable families that may or may not be affiliated with the Moose.

The Loyal Order of Moose and its members didn’t stop there. They went on to build Moosehaven, a retire-

ment community in Florida where for 90 years members have had access to housing, medical care, and a lot of fun, including swimming, bowling, crafts, and computers, dances, special dinners, shopping trips and sightseeing excursions.

May 2014 Lodge 270, located just north of Sam’s Club at 567 25 1/2 Road, is a meeting place for both philanthropists and fun seekers. Though it’s a private organization, membership doesn’t require mandatory meetings or secret handshakes. Administrator Dennis Tobin, who recently passed away, said, “Members decide how much they want to contribute in service or cash and how active they want to be.”

The social quarters provide members with reasonably priced food and refreshments, and children are welcome. The dance floor is legendary in the Grand Valley as the best ballroom in town. Dances occur weekly and on very rare occasions, the lodge hosts open dances where for a fee, the public can attend.

There’s also a lounge, complete with piano bar and pool tables, which opens at 4 p.m. on Tuesdays and Fridays (early for sports fans on game day).

Charles Ross, 65, originally joined the Moose Lodge because he likes to dance and call bingo, which is open to the public. “I like the camaraderie and getting to know people,” he said.

Keith Fowler, a retired teacher, began going to the Moose in 1966, when he played in a band that included then-police chief Bob Evers.

“I joined in 1968 and have been a member ever since,” he said.

Common threads running through every conversation about the Moose are how the members love to support Mooseheart and how great the dance floor is. The local lodge also contributes to the VA Hospital’s coffee fund and hosts fundraisers for the Boy Scouts, local schools, and Daughters of the American Revolution, among others. They sponsor a toy drive and one to provide school supplies to needy children. You can also rent the ballroom for weddings and other celebrations.

While the Moose was founded as a fraternal organization, women now need not be married to a member, or married at all, to enter. Women of the Moose is open to any woman who would like to participate. New income and resource guidelines announced for Medicaid home care and nursing home care

By Eileen Doherty, Colorado Gerontological Society ach year when the Social Security Administration announces a cost of living adjustment for Social Security beneficiaries, individuals who need long-term care and receive Medicaid are allowed to have more income and resources as well.

In 2014, individuals who are applying for (or receiving) home- and community-based services (including assisted living services) or nursing home care are allowed to earn $2,163 per month in income and still be

eligible for Medicaid to help with the cost of care.

A single individual who needs care is allowed to keep $2,000 in resources such as a savings account as well as a home, car, term life insurance policy and irrevocable burial policy.

The equity value of the home cannot exceed $543,000.

If the individual is married and needs care, the community spouse (the one who continues to live in the home) is allowed to retain $1,939 in monthly income (either from the person’s own income and/or a com-

bination of the person’s income and that of the spouse). This is known as the minimum monthly maintenance needs allowance (MMMNA).

Similarly if the individual is married and needs care, the community spouse is allowed to retain $117,240 in cash and other assets with the same exclusions as noted previously.

If an individual has more than $2,163 in monthly income, the individual can still be eligible for Medicaid by creating a Medicaid qualifying trust or a Miller Trust. Any monthly income over $2,163 is placed in the trust and is paid to the State of Colorado upon the death of the individual.

Individuals who transfer cash or property to another individual or organization are subject to a 60-month look-back period. If funds have been transferred or given away, the penalty for 2014 is $7,112.

For example, if an individual applying for Medicaid in January 2014, filed a quitclaim deed on a $350,000 house within the past 24 months, making an adult child a joint tenant to avoid a Medicaid lien, the individual would be subject to a transfer without fair consideration penalty for 50 months. However, if the same individual filed a quitclaim deed in December 2008, there would be no look-back period and no transfer without fair consideration because 60 months have passed since the date of the transfer.

Individuals who own a home may have a Medicaid lien placed on the house unless the individual meets one the following exceptions: 1) has a spouse; 2) has a dependent child who is disabled; 3) has a brother or sister who is an equity owner in the home; or 4) has an adult child who has lived in the home as the primary residence for the past two years (prior to requesting Medicaid

assistance) and who continues to live there after the individual receives long-term care.

If a home is owned in joint tenancy, it is also exempt from a lien. The State of Colorado will only file a lien if the individual receives Medicaid for more than six months and if it is financially beneficial to the State of Colorado. Most liens are filed against property of individuals who are very high users of Medicaid services for an extended period of time.

Applications for Medicaid can be filed either through PEAK, the state of Colorado’s online system, or with paper applications that can be obtained from the county department of human services. Applications must be accompanied by the necessary documentation to prove eligibility.

In addition to financial eligibility, individuals must meet the functional requirements to receive Medicaid.

Individuals must have significant deficits in at least two of the following areas: bathing, dressing, mobility, transferring, eating, and continence; or at least one significant deficit in behavior or supervision such as confusion, forgetting to take medications, or a need for ongoing oversight to prevent harm to self or others.

Eligibility for functional needs is determined by the Options for Longterm Care Agency, while the county department of human services determines financial eligibility.

Medicaid is a complex program that is available to low- and middleincome individuals who need longterm care services and who meet the eligibility requirements. Local group helps writers with ins and outs of publishing

By Terri Benson ow that you’re retired, how about writing that book you always wanted to but never had the time for?

If your next excuse is, “I don’t know how,” then I have a spoiler for you. Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers (RMFW) is a great group of published authors and writers who started on the Eastern Slope, and have now formed a Western Slope group. The local group has grown over the last few years, from a small handful of people to more than 50 at a recent workshop.

Attendees come from as far as Moab, Rangely, Ridgway and the Roaring Fork Valley, and some even travel from the Eastern Slope to take advantage of the great workshops.

RMFW meets at the Business Incubator Center (BIC), 2591 Legacy Way in Grand Junction, every other month for a half-day workshop, and has a full-day workshop once per year.

“You don’t have to be a member to attend the events at BIC, most of which are free,” local RMFW organizer and writer Vicki Law said, “and you can still subscribe to the newsletter, which contains a huge amount of information and advice.”

However, membership at only $45 per year is a real steal. It gets you discounts to the classes and workshops that do have a fee (including online classes), as well as the annual conference and retreat, and offers a whole bunch of other benefits, including invites to social events, contests and online discussion groups. The workshop and classes are put on by members of a phenomenal group, in-

cluding New York Times bestselling authors. RMFW also has in-person, local critique groups and online critique groups.

Multi-best-selling and published authors, such as Jeanne C. Stein, Cindi Myers, Jan Weeks, J.A. Kazimer, Shannon Baker and Warren Hammond, have presented at RMFW meetings as well as industry professionals like editor Nikki Baird and agent representatives.

Attendees have had the opportunity to pitch their manuscripts and get one-on-one critiques at no charge.

“The great presentations and being able to network with other writers has not only helped me improve my skills, it’s allowed me to find new friends who understand the often frustrating business of writing,” local author and freelance editor Jan Weeks said.

Online classes have been taught by authors Karen Duvall, Marie Harte, Katrina Knights, Trai Cartwright and Thomas A. Fowler, as well as screen writers, detectives, agents, editors, social media marketing gurus and self-publishing experts.

“This kind of high-powered writing skill is generally only available on the Eastern Slope and with really big writer’s groups,” Law said.

“Take Me Out to the Ball Game”

W

hen the umpire cries “play ball,” and the pitcher throws the first pitch of a baseball game, no one can be sure which team will win. One virtual certainty, however, is that during the seventh-inning stretch, every stadium’s crowd will be on its feet singing, “Take Me Out to the Ball Game.”

That song has been the musical symbol of baseball. It is the most famous song in the world about the sport—or any sport, for that matter.

Moreover, it comes in right behind “Happy Birthday” and “Here Comes the Bride” among the most universally recognized songs in Western culture. It is sung, lustily and from memory, by tens of millions of people every year at major league and minor league baseball games across North America. Indeed, it is part and parcel of the game itself.

And amazingly, its lyrics were written by a young man who had never seen a ball game. The words to “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” were penned in May 1908 by Jack Norworth. When he composed his “ball song,” as he called it, he was a 30-year-old vaudeville performer in New York City.

Norworth, who created much material for his act with music writer Albert Von Tilzer, was trying that spring to come up with a fun little piece, one that the audience could easily learn and sing along with. One afternoon, in a subway car on his way to the theater, Norworth saw a placard advertisement from the New York Giants with the message: “Come out to the Polo Grounds, and enjoy a ball game.” He had his inspiration.

“I figured there had never been a baseball song, so I pulled an old hunk of paper out of my pocket and started scribbling,” he later said of that moment. “The words came together.

Thirty minutes later I had it.”

Norworth’s scrap of paper is now on display in the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York.

He quickly conferred with Von

Tilzer, and they married lyrics to notes. Norworth debuted the song in his act, and it wasn’t long before people were singing it not only in the theater, but on the street—and at the ballparks, too.

Norworth continued to perform in vaudeville theaters, until that form of entertainment faded in the 1920s. But Norworth had been smart enough to copyright his “ball song,” and enjoyed a steady income from royalties.

He appeared in several movies and later on television numerous times. He made five guest appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show during the 1950s.

As his song became a national institution, Norworth was constantly asked the obvious question: How could a man who didn’t know a home run from a sacrifice bunt, write the most famous sports song of all time?

“Robert Louis Stevenson wrote ‘Treasure Island,’” he would retort, “but there was no such place. It was simply a matter of using the imagination.”

Thirty-four years after writing “Take Me Out to the Ball Game,” a friend finally convinced Norworth to actually see a major league game.

It was 1942, and the 64-year-old Brooklyn resident went through the turnstiles of Ebbets Field to see the hometown Dodgers take on the New York Giants. Many stars from both teams had already gone off to war, replaced by teenagers and 4-Fs. No matter. He was hooked.

“I caught the fever,” he later said.

“Now, you can’t get me away from the TV set during a ball game.”

When Norworth moved to Laguna Beach, California in 1952, there was no organized baseball for the youngsters. In his mid-70s, he was instrumental in launching the community’s first Little League program.

Though “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” was Norworth’s most famous song, he wrote more than 400 other songs during his lifetime.

He died in 1959 at the age of 80.

Relatively anonymous in death as in life, he nonetheless left a happy musical legacy that nearly everyone knows. ■

Who’s watching Mom?

By Alina Navarini, MediaPost Communications f you think of “aging in place” as a new phenomenon, you probably didn’t grow up in a Hispanic household. For most first- and second-generation Hispanic Americans, living at home with Mom—or having Mom live with you—isn’t symptomatic of a sluggish economy, it’s a cultural norm.

Many adult Hispanic American children believe it is their duty to care for parents as they age, and will move in with their parents as they begin to require assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs), and in some cases, increased supervision due to dementia and other memory issues. After all, many grew up with their abuela and abuelo (grandparents) in their childhood homes.

In Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as in many countries in Asia and across the Middle East, assisted living and retirement communities have just recently come into existence due to cultural and generational shifts. Despite this, many in these regions view skilled nursing facilities as a last resort, only considering them viable options once the parent’s health has greatly deteriorated and conditions have progressed beyond what the adult children can safely handle themselves. As a result, more move-in decisions are made at times of medical crisis, when specialized, around-the-clock attention is not merely nice to have, but a medical necessity.

But the trend is not just cultural, it’s economic, too. Hispanics represent the fastest-growing ethnic group in the United States, which translates into the fastest-growing aging population. In contrast to their Anglo

counterparts, who are more likely to have spent their working years paying into retirement accounts or pension funds, older Hispanics are more likely to have worked in skilled or manual labor positions, leaving them unprepared to sustain themselves financially into their golden years. As a consequence, elderly Hispanics, especially those 75 and older, experience higher rates of poverty than do other groups. Older Hispanics are also less likely to receive Social Security benefits than the general population, and those who do are often dependent on this income for food and other basic needs.

And that’s where the familial bond comes into play. Remaining in the household offsets these gaps in income and care, especially since these multigenerational households also tend to include grandchildren and other family members. This living arrangement can provide both financial and emotional support. Living with family gives the elder member social contact and an opportunity to serve certain functions important in the Hispanic family system, such as passing down traditions and language, which may help curb the incidents of isolation and depression often seen in this age group.

While many highly acculturated Latino boomers have chosen to care for their aging parents at home, they’re still on the fence about their own retirement options. Better understanding of what continuing care retirement communities (CCRCs) can offer—combined with a determination not to burden their own adult children—weigh heavily against deeply ingrained familial ties and the desire to stay connected to their homes and communities. ■

Region 10 Community Living Services sponsors this educational event for caregivers in Montrose, Delta, Gunnison, Ouray, Hinsdale and San Miguel counties at Grace Community Church, 16731 Woodgate Road in Montrose.

“We want to use this day as an opportunity to inform people of the help available and acknowledge the great task these people have taken on,” Region 10 Community Service Director/Lead Ombudsman Eva Veitch said. “We hope this day will help them develop new friendships and a network of people in similar situations.”

In addition to two keynote speakers, there will be several breakout sessions covering topics such as

legal issues, caregiver wellness, long distance caregiving, tips for dealing with dementia and more. Area vendors will be available to inform attendees about their pertinent services and products.

Door prizes will be given away throughout the day. The cost to attend this event is $5, which includes a continental breakfast and lunch.

“We started receiving more and more calls about the need for respite care and resources,” Veitch said.

“From my perspective, caregivers don’t know where the resources are.

The whole crux of our program is to provide services that will enable people to stay in their homes for as long as possible. We hope this is the first of what will become an annual event. We want to get the word out that help is available.”

The event is meant to give caregivers an opportunity to relax, connect with others, gain new information

and learn better ways to take care of themselves and their loved ones.

Frugal fashions for you here is nothing more rewarding to a thrift store shopper than to be complimented on an outfit, only to say it cost just $4, and watch the other person’s jaw drop. The icing on the cake is when they then respond by saying they bought something similar for 10 times more at a department store.

Cheryl (Jolly) Gummere, 68, has been shopping secondhand stores for over 40 years.

“I’m a very frugal person. It’s my philosophy,” she said. “There are so many more choices at secondhand stores than department stores. I almost always find four or five items and pay under $20, which is very satisfying. It’s fun to make a serendipitous find.”

If Gummere changes her mind about an item down the road, she gives it to a friend or re-donates it without having lost out on much.

One store that Gummere frequents is the Salvation Army Thrift Store, 1155 N. Fourth St. in Grand Junction.

In 1999, Jeannie Maraschin won a drawing in Denver for a $250 shopping spree with a personal shopper.

Little did she know, it would change her life. The personal shopper gave her two choices: Choose one or two high-end items from an up-scale department store or fill her closet with good merchandise from quality secondhand stores. Maraschin, now 70, took a chance on the thrift stores.

“I was hooked,” Maraschin said.

“You can find great buys for your money. It’s more bang for your buck.”

Maraschin moved to Grand Junction in 2009 and found that Heirlooms for Hospice on Main Street is one of her favorite places to shop.

“I can change out my clothes more often and not feel guilty about it,” Maraschin said.

All of the reasons discussed in last week’s article are good, sound reasons to prearrange whether you are single, a parent, elderly, dealing with a terminal illness, or have sustained a serious injury. However, how many of you who prearranged years ago have checked on your contract recently? Here are some questions to ask yourself: • Is the company you prearranged through still in business or was it bought out by another company and do you have the contact information for the new owner? Have you provided the company with your updated contact information (address, phone, and information regarding next of kin)?

• Is your prearrangement an actual insurance funded funeral contract with a funeral home that locks in pricing or is it only an insurance policy designed to pay for your final expenses with a lump sum? Will the amount of the lump sum policy cover your expenses at today’s prices or projected future prices?

• If you only have lump sum life insurance, do you still have your policy? Many times the original policy must be turned in to receive any entitled benefit. Is the beneficiary of your policy still living or do you need to update your beneficiary with the insurance company?

• Does your current prearrangement include all the services you want today or have your wishes changed?

Can you change a burial preneed to cremation services (and vice versa)? What happens if you do?

• Is everything you need included in your prearrangement? In previous years, options like setting funds aside for cash advance items such as sales tax, flowers, service book and folders, honorariums, death certificates, etc. was not a standard practice.

Today they are routinely included.

Times have changed and so have the practices and options of the prearranged funeral process. We receive calls every day from people verifying their prearranged funeral expense contracts and we applaud their common sense and foresight. It is better to know in advance if your funeral expense contract covers everything you desire. Stephens Award Winners Announcement Colorado Discover Ability celebrated Hawaiian style at their recent Chefs’ Dinner at the DoubleTree Hotel. The festivities included a four-course meal, live and silent auctions, and two of their outstanding volunteers being honored as the Jack Stephens Award recipients for 2014. This award recognizes those volunteers who best emulate the mission of Colorado Discover Ability to serve people of disabilities in providing outdoor recreational opportunities.

Volunteers from Montrose area churches will perform service projects benefiting the community, coming together at Columbine Middle School and Rotary Park at 8:30 a.m.

Projects are defined to improve our schools, parks, city and county properties, to assist the elderly and to serve those in need. This outreach includes a food drive for local food pantries, a blood drive and a coat drive.

Black Canyon Ascent 6M Run and Challenge Walk The Black Canyon Ascent on May 17 features a tough, scenic 6-mile course starting at an elevation of 6,500 feet and climbing almost 2,000 feet to the rim of the Black Canyon National Park. Race starts at 7:30 a.m. for walkers and 8 a.m. for runners.

After the race, enjoy visiting the spectacular Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. All participants will receive high-quality tech shirts with distinctive Black Canyon imagery and will be entered into the raffle to take place during and after the awards ceremony. The race is also a fundraiser for the Montrose Community Foundation. Cost is $35 until May 15 and $45 afterwards. Economist says trust fund for boomers has disappeared

F

or many baby boomers, it’s comforting to believe that part of the Social Security payroll tax they (or they and their employer) have been paying is going into a $2.7 trillion Social Security trust fund designed to ensure that the tidal wave of boomers now retiring will be assured their benefits. Economist and former professor Allen W. Smith, however, said there is no trust fund and a number of elected officials, including former President George W. Bush, have acknowledged that.

“To make a long story very short, we are supposed to have $2.7 trillion in Social Security surplus, all earmarked for the baby boomers’ retirement, due to money generated by amendments approved in 1983,” said Smith, author of several books, including “The Looting of Social Security” and “Ronald Reagan and the Great Social Security Heist.” “But there’s no money in the fund.”

Where did it go? Four administrations, from Reagan to George W. Bush, spent it on myriad non-Social Security efforts. “Obama didn’t have a chance to use it. It was gone,” Smith said.

The 1983 amendments approved under Reagan generated revenue by accelerating Social Security payroll tax increases, allowing a portion of benefits to be taxed, and delaying cost-of-living adjustments from June to December.

According to the Social Security Administration website: “The surpluses are invested in (and the trust fund holds) special-issue treasury bonds.”

But what’s actually sitting in the trust fund is non-marketable government IOUs, which are worthless, Smith said. The fact has been publicly acknowledged by a 2009 Social Security trustees report; Sen. Tom Coburn; and President George W. Bush, who in 2005 said, “There is no trust fund, just IOUs that I saw firsthand, future generations will pay—either in higher taxes or reduced benefits or

cuts to other programs.”

Speaker of the House John Boehner offered a sobering statement on ABC’s “This Week,” on October 6, 2013: “…Ten thousand baby boomers like me (are) retiring every single day – 70,000 this week; 3.5 million this year. And it’s not like there’s money in Social Security or Medicare. The government, over the last 30 years, has spent it all.”

Smith examined what needs to happen starting today.

• Get the secret out. The total cost of paying full benefits in 2010 exceeded Social Security tax revenue by $49 billion, and the gap between revenue and costs will become larger.

“On September 27, 2000, I appeared on CNN Today to discuss my book, the host did not take me seriously and asked me if I was ‘a voice crying in the wilderness,’” Smith said.

“I quickly realized that he was right, with the exception of statements by politicians and officials.”

• Get AARP, NCPSSM and the media involved. The only way the government was able to pay full benefits in 2010 was to borrow billions from China, among other creditors. The public is repeatedly being told by government officials and leaders from the AARP and the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare that the trust fund has enough money to pay full benefits until 2033. “I have tried engaging the leaders of these organizations with my research, but my attempts have been unsuccessful,” Smith said.

• Get the baby boomers engaged in protesting once again. Boomers are no strangers to taking to the streets to express their outrage. However, “I’m beginning to think that it’s going to take missed checks before the public raises their voices.”

My question would be ‘What constitutes visible tattoos?’ If the attendant can spot the beak of the hummingbird peeking out of a sleeve, is that grounds for refusal of admission?

As to tattoos in general, I’ve never heard anyone exclaim, ‘You look so much better with that snake scrolled around your arm’ or ‘I just love that mythical warrior growling over the back of your shorts when you bend over.’

They are a current fad, like giving newborns names that are as hard to figure out as some vanity plates. At some point in the future, pale, un-tanned bodies and baggy clothes festooned with lint will come back into fashion.
