Celebrating the parks in our backyard: National Park Service commemorates 100 years on August 25

A

fter visiting Colorado in 1893, Professor Katharine Bates wrote the words to the patriotic song, “America the Beautiful.” With the establishment of the National Park Service in 1916, these words still ring true. The centennial celebrates the achievements of the past 100 years, but it’s really about looking toward the future.

The concept of national parks, in part, grew out of the conservation movement that began in the 19th century. With the settlement of the west came increased awareness of and sensitivity toward preserving nature and breathtaking landscapes, and significant historical and cultural sites.

It’s no coincidence that the first national park (Yellowstone National Park, est. 1872) was established in the same decade that authors involved in the national park movement, including John Muir and John Wesley Powell, described the spectacular scenery of the western U.S. For over four decades the nation’s parks, reserves and monuments were supervised at different times by the departments of war, agriculture and the interior. In 1916, the NPS was established to unite all entities under one umbrella. As some parks had been supervised by the U.S. military, the traditional ranger uniform and “flat” hat took hold.

Since 1872, the U.S. national park system has grown to 411 units covering more than 84 million acres in 50 states, Washington, DC, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, Sipán and the Virgin Islands. The diversity includes natural, historical, recreational and cultural areas designated as national parks, monuments, memorials, military parks, historic sites, parkways, recreation areas, seashores, scenic riverways, scenic trails and others.

“National parks are an American idea—like apple pie and baseball,” said Lisa Eckert, a 34-year veteran of the Park Service, former superinten-

dent of Colorado National Monument, and the current superintendent of Bryce Canyon National Park.

“I live and breathe national parks.

Visiting this system of parks is like opening a treasure box.”

According to the Colorado Tourism Office, Colorado has four national parks, eight national monuments, 11 national forests, three national historic sites, two national grasslands and more.

The founding of Yellowstone National Park began a worldwide national park movement. Today more than 100 countries contain some 1,200 national parks or equivalent preserves.

Monument vs. park The Antiquities Act of 1906, signed by President Theodore Roosevelt, was the result of the movement seeking to preserve the cliff dwellings, pueblo ruins and early missions throughout the west and southwest. It authorized the president to declare sites of historic or scientific interest as national monuments. National park designations require an act of Congress.

Devils Tower, a Wyoming landmark, became the first national monument in 1906.

The designation for Colorado National Monument began with its legendary advocate, John Otto.

Over the course of four years, Otto wrote endless letters to Washington politicians petitioning for national park recognition of the ancient canyons and towering monoliths of his adopted home. President Taft signed the Colorado National Monument proclamation on May 24, 1911, and each future president carried on the vision.

“I came here last year (1906) and found these canyons,” Otto wrote, “and they feel like the heart of the world to me. I’m going to stay and build trails and promote this place because it should be a national park.”

Every Fourth of July, Mesa County Search and Rescue mounts an American flag on top of Independence Monument, overseeing the majestic red rock cliffs and canyons.

“Visitors are experiencing their national parks in record numbers and Colorado National Monument is no exception,” Colorado National Monument Superintendent Ken Mabery said. “We are especially excited for those visitors that take the time to understand this great natural area and pass that knowledge on to others, for that indeed is the best way to ensure a legacy for the future.”

The steep and rugged Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park

was designated a monument in 1933 and acquired park status in 1999. According to “Images of America: The Black Canyon of the Gunnison” by Duane Vandenbusche, the canyon’s name owes itself to the fact that parts of the gorge only receive 33 minutes of sunlight a day.

“We’re excited about the National Park Service centennial because it gives us a chance to highlight Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park and other smaller parks,” Black Canyon of the Gunnison Public Information Officer Sandra Snell-Dobert said.

National parks will celebrate the Park Service’ centennial August 2528 with free entrance to all parks.

There are many ways to see and study our national parks, as well as incentives for seniors and regular park goers. “One of the coolest things about the National Park Service is the opportunity for lifelong learning,” Colorado National Monument Chief of Interpretation Arlene Jackson said.

“National parks are a great way to expand and exercise your brain.”

Online learning - Unlikely to travel?

No problem. You can learn about the parks online at www.nps.gov. The National Park Service website features photography and video clips of each location. Some parks even have live webcams, allowing you to see sights such as Old Faithful in Yellowstone National Park erupt in real time.

Lifetime Pass - Seniors 62 and older can get a National Parks Lifetime Pass for just $10.

Annual Pass - If you’re under 62 and looking to visit several parks within 12 months, invest in the annual pass for just $80.

National Park Passport - Similar to the look and purpose of a typical international passport, the Passport to Your National Parks serves as a fun way to document Park Service sites you have visited.

Cancellation stamps can be acquired at no cost at park visitor centers and ranger stations.

Catching up with Jim TerLouw When the BEACON last caught up with Grand Junction resident Jim TerLouw in 2013, 398 national parks were in place and the main item on his bucket list was to see them all. At that time, he had 320 down and 78 to go. Today, he is 40 parks closer, although there are now 411 national parks. He recently visited Hawaii, and saw the newly designated Honouliuli National Monument, the site of an internment camp during World War II.

Make Meeker your Fourth of July travel destination

I

n 1878 a 61-year-old financially strapped poet, journalist and founder of utopian colonies, inspired by Horace Greeley and armed with an appointment to the White River Ute Indian Agency, arrived in northwestern Colorado to make one last attempt at becoming the man of significance he believed himself to be.

Nathan C. Meeker’s vision was simple: He would civilize the Ute Indians and raise them out of their perceived misery by teaching them the wonders of modern society. He would show them how to be farmers and ranchers and lead them to wealth and happiness. In return they would respect and revere him.

The Utes, however, had a different vision.

Patronizing and overbearing, Meeker quickly became an object of scorn to the Utes. They had no interest in farming, preferring to roam free in their cherished “land of the shining mountains,” hunting for their food and racing their ponies for sport. They continually defied Meeker’s ability to control them, straying far off the reservation and becoming more aggressive in their opposition to the Indian

agent’s authority. By September 1879 tensions had mounted to the point where Meeker felt he needed military assistance to tame the Utes and protect his family. Army troops under the command of Major Thomas Tipton Thornburgh were mustered from Fort Steele in Rawlins, Wyoming and moved toward the White River agency. This was the tipping point.

Fearing that the army was coming to drag them in chains out of their beloved mountains, the Utes rode to meet the soldiers as they approached Milk Creek, some 40 miles from the agency. The two forces met in battle and Major Thornburgh was immediately killed, along with most of his officers. Before the day was over the Utes had also murdered their Indian agent and all male employees of the agency, and took three women—including Meeker’s wife and daughter—hostage. The stage was set for the final removal of the Ute Indians from western Colorado.

Considered by historians to be the last major Native American uprising in North America, the story of the Meeker Massacre is brought to life in an outdoor pageant as part of the town of Meeker’s annual Independence Day celebration.

Other events include the traditional small-town Fourth of July Parade, fireworks display and enactment of the 1896 Meeker Bank Robbery, in which the town’s citizens quickly dispatched three would-be robbers, and what is billed as Colorado’s oldest rodeo.

Enjoy live concerts, kick up your heels at the barn dance, test your riding skills on a mechanical bull, view open-air painting competitions and more at this pretty little town in the White River Valley.

Beyond Independence Day The Meeker area also offers visitors a variety of year-round activities. Off the beaten path and with no ski area in sight, the White River Valley is a hidden gem. The 235,000-acre Flat Tops Wilderness area lies just to the east of Meeker.

An abundance of mountain streams and lakes, including Trapper’s Lake, the second largest natural lake in Colorado, provide ample prospects for fishing. Big-game hunters come from around the globe, drawn by the area’s famous deer and elk herds. Hiking, horseback riding, backpacking, cross country skiing and snowmobiling are other major draws.

The Flat Tops Scenic Byway, an 82-mile drive that connects the

towns of Meeker and Yampa, showcases the beauty of the White River National Forest. Open only during the summer, the Byway offers visitors the ideal opportunity to view pristine scenery and wildlife.

The Meeker Classic Championship Sheepdog Trials, held annually in early September, offers visitors the unique experience of watching sheepdogs and their highly trained handlers compete for cash prizes.

Not to be outdone, the cattledogs now have their own Meeker Classic in a June showcase of competition, volunteerism and sportsmanship.

For history buffs, Meeker’s White River Museum takes you back in time with thousands of artifacts displaying the rich historical legacy of the area. Golfers looking for a new track will be surprised by the challenge of Meeker’s picturesque nine-hole course. And for those just looking to get away, Meeker and the White River Valley offer a wide variety of resorts, cabins and RV parks.

t sat in the driveway, our new-tous root beer-colored 1957 Chevy Nomad station wagon, shiny fins sweeping along the rear quarter panels. Adventure perched on four Firestone tires, with room to sprawl, sleep and make up stories about the mountains, beaches and prairies we’d travel to. I could hardly wait for June!

I come by my wanderlust honestly, passed down through my mother’s genes. In 1926, at the age of 5, she climbed into a Model A touring car with Grandpa and Grandma and set off from Iowa on a thousand miles of exploration: Pike’s Peak, Yellowstone, South Dakota’s Black Hills and Badlands. She was hooked.

That station wagon carried us thousands of miles, making memories that have lasted over half a century. I-70 was still a gleam in some civil engineer’s eye in the early 1960s, and two-lane roads wound and wandered across geography. I was the designated navigator and I still love to study maps, imagining what might be around the next bend.

Sometimes we’d pack the car the night before so we could be on the road before the day heated up. I knew I wouldn’t sleep, anticipating Y ALL DA AY D E VE RY

another journey. Yet at 4 a.m., Mom would shake me awake and in a sleepy stupor, my two sisters and I would stumble to the car in a cool June morning that smelled of grass and dew and magic.

On our way to visit relatives in California, we rolled out of town as the sun sank westward, to drive through the Utah night with only the AM radio to keep us company. I might ride shotgun while Joyce and Joanne slept on the air mattresses that filled the back end. Mom and I talked, wrapped in the anonymity of midnight, able to say things we would never mention at noon. The circles of headlights illuminated the road and bits of landscape along it. Jackrabbits’ eyes glowed red as campfire embers.

As we motored to Iowa to visit friends the Nebraska prairie rippled in noon breezes as meadowlarks soared, their song trilling through the open windows. Fields of corn crowded the highway, narrow asphalt the only path leading east.

I thought of my grandfather who, with an older cousin, made a similar trip in a wagon in the early 1890s when Indians still roamed the plains and rattlesnakes lurked.

For weeks they followed faint wagon tracks across the prairie to a farm in western Nebraska. Com-

pared to that expedition we had it easy.

The only people who could afford Cadillacs and Buicks and other top-of-the-line autos had air conditioning, but we still kept our cool— most of the time—with windows rolled down. When the heat got especially vicious (think Las Vegas at 110 degrees), Mom bought bags of ice to rest our bare feet on. Drippy but effective. She developed deeply tanned trucker’s arm from resting on the window frame.

The Nomad served as a camping “cabin,” too. After pulling off onto a side road in Wyoming or Montana, Mom and my sisters clambered into the back to sleep. I usually opted to make my bed on the bench seat in front. Mom was too exhausted to drive on to the next motel, and we kids were growly from being cooped up all day.

These days, my Ford Escape and I travel a thousand miles in a day, hit-

ting 80 mph on interstate highways instead of touring at the modest 55 mph that was the top speed for the Chevy. I flip on the air conditioning or the heater for comfort, and when I’m tired, I stop for a quick lunch at any exit where Subways, Burger Kings and Mickey D’s have staked claims. The radio scans through a multitude of stations, or I stick a weensy computer into the dashboard USB port and listen to music I’ve chosen. My trips may be faster and more comfortable, but they’re infinitely less interesting than those treks across lonesome two-lanes and through small towns long vanished after being bypassed by four-lane freeways.

Though I may no longer slow down and smell the desert wind or hear the larks’ soaring song, in memory I’m still 14, still a rover, still on my way to the next great adventure. ■

ast summer, my husband and I went on an epic coast-to-coast road trip. We encountered a few bumps in the road, learned a few lessons and had the time of our lives visiting new and familiar places, and family along the way.

We started our journey in Grand Junction and headed east to Pinehurst, North Carolina and Charleston, South Carolina. To make it more interesting we traveled in a loop, never seeing the same place twice (unless we wanted to).

If you are thinking of leaving on a road trip, you need to be prepared for the unexpected. Here are six things you can do to make sure your trip is everything you want it to be.

1) Have a great car. We own a 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid, which gets great gas mileage and has many safety features, such as a built-in phone connection, back up camera, side mirror warning lights and a navigation system. Before the trip, we had everything cleaned and checked out at the dealership, changed the oil and bought new continental tires. If your car is not in the best condition, renting a car is the next best option. This put our mind at ease and we had no issues on the trip.

2) Consider your health. Make sure to pack your meds and supplements and pack extra in case you end up staying longer or have problems returning on time. This became apparent the first day of our trip, when my husband realized he’d forgotten to pack his meds. We almost turned around, but instead we called a friend to mail them to us via overnight express. Toward

the end of the trip, I realized I hadn’t packed enough meds to account for the extra days we spent on the road. I ended up cutting my meds in half so I didn’t run out completely. I could have also sought out a pharmacy, but packing extra meds would have been the best option.

Be sure to plan for meals and exercise along the way. If you eat

three heavy meals and just sit in the car, you’re bound to gain weight—I did! Plan to eat two light meals out and have healthy snacks on hand from your cooler. Get as much exercise as you can in hotel gyms or pools or plan one meal near a park or walking path where you can get a short walk in. Too much sitting causes the ankles to swell, so move around as much as you can.

3) Pack for convenience. In addition to a large bag, I also packed a small carry-on bag with everything in it that I would need for a few days. That way it was easy to get in and out of the car for hotel stays. I replenished the small bag from the larger bag every few days. I never even took the large bag out of the car. On a road trip you have enough room to bring a few comforts from home to make your trip more enjoyable, like beach bags with towels, hats, robes and a small cooler for snacks and picnic supplies. One mistake we made was packing too much clothing. We found we only needed about half of what we packed due to the availability of washing machines wherever we were.

4) Plan a route but be flexible.

Bring your atlas or use your phone’s navigation system, but when the opportunity arises, take the scenic byways. We discovered this while

trying to avoid construction delays, and were delighted by the many surprises we found on the smaller roads. Stop to see a point of interest or a historical small town—your trip will take longer but the scenery and new experiences are well worth it. We particularly enjoyed driving along the Appalachian Trail and the Music Highway through Virginia and Tennessee, and visiting Boonville in Missouri and touring Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. You may end up staying an extra day or two in places of interest, like we did in Charleston, Pinehurst, Nashville, Las Vegas, San Diego, Denver and Colorado Springs.

It was nice to break up the hotel stays with a few visits with family in the areas we were in. Depending on what activities and people are available, a flexible schedule allows you to enjoy it all.

5) Use your smart phone and apps. My husband loves a good deal, so he used several websites and apps on the trip that saved us money. Most hotels want to fill up their rooms and will offer last-minute deals to travelers. Using Hotels. com, he found great discounts on hotel rooms and booked them online before we arrived. We were able to get our must-haves, like a clean king bed, refrigerator, free breakfast and Wi-Fi at every stop.

We were only disappointed once with a subpar room. Stick with the known destinations and chain hotels. With the Foursquare app, we found nearby restaurants, with ratings and directions. With GasBuddy, we were able to find the cheapest gas nearby and directions to it. Your smartphone, notably the iPhone, has a great camera to use when the moment calls for it. We didn’t even bring our camera bag. When we wondered about the weather, it was easy to check the Weather app.

Google Maps is another great navigation tool we used occasionally.

Keep your phone charged and it’s easy cruising.

6) Keep a journal. How else would I remember all of this? If you want to be able to remember where you went, what you did and on what day, the best thing to do is write it down. Even a small notepad works for this. Social media posts can also be used to document where you were on what day.

Road trips can be a lot of fun if you plan and prepare—they’re about the journey, not just the destination—and they sure beat dealing with TSA and flight delays on many occasions. On this trip we were gone for 22 days and traveled 4,771 miles, and we’re already planning our next road trip. ■
