a bounty of senior fun! By Kevin K. VanGundy BeaconFest is a celebration of age and all that’s boomer and senior related, and with more than 100 vendors displaying their senior related products and services, it just happens to be the biggest mature lifestyle expo in the state. If you’re reading this before the show, don’t miss out on the fun— mark your calendars for this year’s BeaconFest Boomer and Senior Fair from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Tuesday, April 16 at Two Rivers Convention Center in Grand Junction.
WHY ATTEND BEACONFEST?
Admission is free! Attendees can visit one on one with local businesses and community organizations, and immerse themselves in a day filled with high-energy music, great food and informative seminars. We also have an exciting lineup of entertainment from acts like King ’n’ Trio, Javier de los Santos and Peggy Malone. Free seminars will be offered on a range of topics, including Medicare, estate planning, reverse mortgages and breakthrough medical treatments.

Thousands of dollars worth of door prizes will be given away in free drawings throughout the day. All you have to do is fill out the official door prize entry form at the BEACON booth. You must be present to win, so walk around or sit back and wait for your chance to win as names are called from the stage. BEACONFEST Concert Series. Past performances include playing with Pepe Romero and Romero’s Guitar Quartet at the Celedonio Romero Guitar Institute in Oklahoma City, and being a soloist with the Grand Junction and Boulder Symphony Orchestras. Javier is founder of Mariachi San Jose, president and artistic director of the Western Colorado Classical Guitar Society and guitar instructor at Independence Academy Charter School, and an instructor of music theory at Colorado Mesa University.
Swing City Express Jazz Quartet 9:00, Jazz/Swing
A subgroup of the beloved band that performs at the BEACON’s annual Valentine’s Dance, Swing City Express Jazz Quartet is led by bass player and trombonist Clark Gault. He is joined by pianist Mike Gazdak and drummer Bill Richardson, two Grand Valley residents, and bassist Tim Emmons, a transplant from Los Angeles.

King ’n’ Trio
10:00, Folk/Americana Since its inception in December 2001, the King ‘n’ Trio has entertained audiences with their enthusiastic, toe-tapping, singalongs. Band members Chris Unfug, Merritt Kinsey, Terry Toner and Ron Koss are members of the Grand Junction Rotary Club and have raised over $200,000 to date for Rotary Foundation and other charitable projects. Proceeds from their five CDs are also part of the band’s fundraising efforts.

Javier de los Santos has performed extensively in the U.S., Mexico, Spain and Brazil. He has performed at Blue Sage Center for the Arts in Paonia and with the Apollo Chamber Players from Houston at the Grand Junction Symphony Orchestra Chamber
The Scones bring big harmonies, acoustic guitar gymnastics and rockin’ keys to audiences big and small. The band’s live show is anchored around a mix of classic rock songs and award-winning originals with melodic integrity and strong hooks. Their latest album, “Metrognomes,” is a great example of their musicality and versatility. Touring mainly in the western U.S., The Scones have shared the stage with Joe Cocker, The Subdudes, David Lindley, John Cowan, Lyle Lovett, Otis Taylor, Ramblin’ Jack Elliot, and many more. Vintage Guitar Magazine praises their recordings as having “glorious harmonies and first-rate guitar work.” San Antonio Express News describes their music as “Americana for adults featuring top-notch songwriting.” The band’s instrumentation includes Rick Stockton on guitar/banjo, Helen Highwater on bass, Harry Knipe on percussion, and Tim Veazey on keyboards.

2:00, Guitar Favorites Whether he’s entertaining with Americana rock favorites, country melodies or swing tunes, just about anything Ron Koss plays has audiences singing along. He has played music professionally for over 30 years and has performed at numerous events across the Grand Valley for over a decade. His dynamic personality and interactive performances make him a favorite at BeaconFest.
