Don’t let SHIP sink!

C

ongress is at it again—laying siege to common sense as the Senate Appropriations Committee has proposed to entirely eliminate funding of the State Health Insurance Assistance Program, otherwise known as SHIP. SHIP provides vital one-on-one benefit counseling to people with Medicare, helping them choose Medicare plans and navigate denials. They also assist low-income Medicare beneficiaries in accessing programs that lower their costs, such as Medicare Savings programs and the Low Income Subsidy, and in using those programs effectively.

Eight years at the helm of this senior monthly has taught me to rarely answer questions on Medicare directly and always refer our readers to their local SHIP office. Like the infernal tax code, Medicare is ever changing in its costs and coverages, and SHIP Counselors receive training to stay current. SHIP is a valuable program that deserves taxpayers’ financial support

Woodworkers build a community of craftsmanship

H

ow much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?

The answer to this riddle depends on the chuck and, of course, the wood. Local woodturners use a chuck to hold wood so they can turn it on a lathe, a tool that spins the object held by the chuck at high speeds. Live centers positioned on each end are used in place of the chuck for some projects; one spins the wood, while the other holds it still. Different cutting tools peel away layers of wood, smoothing it, and reshaping it into objects such as a bowl, vase, spoon or even a cane.

Such a cane is the heart of the community of woodworkers. In 2006, Martin Lutz organized people interested in working with wood into the Woodworkers Guild of Western Colorado. Members represented diverse interests and skills, from furniture making to toys, and

woodcarving to turning—all reflecting some aspect of art.

For the first couple of years, the guild participated in the Toys for Tots program, making doll cradles, tops and push toys. In 2012, they became involved with the Eagle Head Canes Project, making canes for veterans.

The tradition of eagle head canes dates back to the American Civil War. When soldiers from both sides returned home, many had serious leg injuries or amputations.

Communities stepped up to help, and neighbors hand-carved canes crowned with eagle heads to represent strength and freedom.

Eventually veteran services were created, and the eagle head cane tradition faded. Then, in 2004, Jack Nitz saw a segment on the national news about post-9/11 veterans. He wanted to give presentation canes to show respect to wounded veterans. In May that year, the Eastern Oklahoma Woodcarvers Association

approved the making of eagle head canes as a club project.

The idea caught on with the local groups as well.

The Woodworkers Guild, along with the Grand Valley Woodturners and Grand Valley Woodcarvers of Grand Junction, embraced the project and created a community of woodworkers with a shared passion.

The art of working with wood Club members are teachers as well as students. There are no guarded secrets as they work to master their craft and teach others their techniques. The creative diversity among members is evident in the many projects seen at club meetings and community events, as members fashion their own pieces based on their interests and hobbies—from wooden gargoyles, to birds and wildlife, to dishware and bottle stoppers with funny sayings and characters.

When it comes to creating the eagle head canes, woodturners create the shaft of each cane while woodcarvers carefully sculpt, stain and paint the eagle heads. A wooden transition ring connects the two pieces, and the shaft is woodburned

with a veteran’s name, rank and unit, creating a one-of-a-kind token of respect. They even use Purpleheart wood for the canes given to Purple Heart recipients.

Keeping up with demand Since the Eagle Cane Project began in the Grand Valley in 2008, over 285 eagle canes have been presented to veterans.

In 2012, Buck Taylor of the Grand Valley Woodturners asked the Woodworkers Guild to help with the turning of canes, since so many requests came from Montrose veterans. The Grand Valley group continued to do the paperwork, engraving and carving the heads.

That same year, Welcome Home Montrose, a homegrown program to assist veterans, opened their Warrior Resource Center in Montrose. Executive Director Emily Smith maintains the database of requests.

“We’ve processed over 360 applications,” Smith said. “The guild, turners and carvers came together to make these works of art in honor of all veterans in Montrose and the surrounding areas. Their dedication and willingness to volunteer so much of

themselves makes our entire community proud.”

The Black Canyon Woodcarvers, organized in 2000, and Montrose Area Woodturners (MAW), founded in 2013, came on board to help craft the canes as demand increased.

In the Delta and Montrose areas, Black Canyon Woodcarvers Gary Gratton, Kate Kirkpatrick and “Big Tom” are the artists of the eagle heads. Gratton does the rough cut, and the three of them carve the details.

“Basswood is best,” Gratton said, “but I also like to use alder wood because it sands down.”

Gratton said he’s made several special canes, including a screaming eagle for a veteran who served with the 101st Airborne Division of the U.S. Army, a division nicknamed the “Screaming Eagles.”

“My signature is the feathers,” Gratton said, “and Tom’s is the pair of warrior feathers.”

Honoring vets and their service One thing all the artists have in common is their respect for veterans and their service. The woodworkers love hearing their stories.

“I remember one Vietnam vet who told us this was the first time he’d ever been thanked,” MAW and Guild member Bob Hampton said.

Grand Valley resident and cane recipient Wayne Telford was a Navy Lieutenant assigned to a Navy LST 980 Riverboat in Vietnam.

“I’m honored and humbled by this presentation,” he said. “This cane will always have a place of honor in my home.”

MAW and guild member Bill Marvel not only turns canes, he received one, too.

“My wife, Gail, and I are both Navy veterans, but we served at different times,” he said. “It was special to receive our eagle head canes at the same presentation. For me, there were feelings of validation and recognition for my Vietnam service.”

In addition to the cane project, MAW is involved in education of its members and of high school students.

“We strive to reach those who may have had a taste of woodturning in high school shop,” MAW President Dave Kaufmann said.

“Our goal is to reach and teach the art of woodturning to all ages.

Watching a block of wood, or log, become a beautiful piece of art is awe inspiring.” ■

Losing a parent: End-of-life discussions can ease grief

T

he loss of a parent is part of the natural life cycle, but it doesn’t lessen the confusion or grief. Society tends to react to death differently when it happens to a child or even unexpectedly to a full-grown adult. With an aging parent, it’s more expected.

However, as sociologist Debra Umberson said, “Losing a parent is like losing a part of oneself.”

Until our parents die, we are still someone’s children, so their deaths mark a new passage in our life.

Our role in the family changes. Our parents are typically the only ones who have known us since birth. We have to deal with not only the loss of their physical presence, but also their support, knowledge, counsel and the fact that there will be no new memories.

Everyone prepares and grieves differently, but having some kind of end-of-life discussion with your parents ahead of time can sometimes ease the pain and grief of losing them.

Different strokes After losing both parents in three years, Lisa Fenton-Free, 62, found comfort in knowing that she and her parents had discussed end-of-

life wishes before they passed.

“We spoke of end-of-life choices many times,” she said. “It’s critical to have the conversation with all family members, and a feeling of great relief and love to have this completed. I don’t have to look back and live with any doubts or regrets.”

However, Tommie Walsh doesn’t regret her family’s decision not to have advance directives, even after her father’s death eight years ago.

“We have talked about end-of-life wishes in passing conversation,” said Walsh, 62. “We deal with things as they come up and take one day at a time. There is a lot of pain in death, but we move on.”

Because of their strong relationship, and her parents’ trust in their doctor’s recommendations, not having advance directives is Walsh’s way of honoring her parents’ wishes.

Having the talk Even though both of Vickie Cook’s parents are still living, she said she started worrying about her parents’ end-of-life wishes about five years ago.

“First I wondered, ‘What am I going to do without them?’” Cook, 58, said, “Secondly, ‘How will I process

wanting to know what their wishes are and honoring them?’”

One day Cook went to the doctor with her parents. One of the first questions the doctor asked was, “Do you have an advance directive?”

“Mom and Dad did not have one, and that always bothered me,” Cook said. “That was the catalyst that got the ball rolling.”

“It’s a hard topic to approach because you want them to know you are honoring them and their wishes, but you also don’t want to think about their mortality,” she said.

Five Wishes is a living will that talks about your personal, emotional and spiritual needs, as well as your medi-

cal wishes. It lets you choose the person you want to make health care decisions for you if you are not able to make them yourself. Five Wishes lets you say exactly how you wish to be treated if you become seriously ill.

parents and they all took time to think about the idea before they sat down and talked through it.

“The conversation wasn’t difficult at all,” she said. “I went into this experience with a lot of nervous trepidation. It ended up being a total gift from them, to hear their wishes and to be able to honor and respect them in their end-of-life decisions.

It was joyful to hear what they wanted with a whole new level of understanding.”

It was an eye-opener for Cook, as she learned that some of her assumptions about their end-of-life needs didn’t match her parents’ wishes.

She said that going through the Five Wishes with her parents has helped prepare her for losing them, but ultimately, “I know where they’re going and I will see them again.”

Working through grief Though having an end-of-life discussion helps, “Emotional preparation is impossible,” Fenton-Free said. “I was extremely exhausted for a few weeks after Mom’s death.

and long to pick up the phone and talk with her.”

Losing a parent often gives people a sense of their own mortality. They might reassess who they are and develop new purpose and priorities in their lives.

Fenton-Free considers losing a parent to be a “new adulthood.”

“My mother’s death brings light to me,” she said. “I wonder how do I want to live every single day and how do I want to live my faith?”

Fenton-Free finds comfort from grief by looking at photos. For Walsh, pictures of her dad are often in her mind.

“Memories are sparked just by doing the little things that he would have enjoyed,” Walsh said. “I have all happiness for Daddy, no sadness.” ■

Tips for working through grief When you are grieving the loss of your parent, try to remember these things:

• Be patient with yourself. It will take time to feel like your old self again.

Listen to what your mind and heart are telling you. Grieving is a process.

• Find comfort in your faith. It can help you in the grieving process by seeing the bigger picture.

• Consider getting help through a local grief group, or from a counselor.

Some counselors specialize in helping people deal with loss.

• Accept that your parent would want you to keep living. If one parent is still living, they will need your strength and support.

• In preparation, many find it beneficial to have conversations about their end-of-life wishes.

Local author appeals to young audiences with new book

D

o you remember the angst of being 16 years old? Jeri Baird does…vividly.

In “Tokens and Omens,” she creates a world in a time of magic, where teens undergo a trial called The Quest. Fate distributes tokens and omens to them based on their behavior. The tokens can counteract the potentially lethal omens.

Puck’s Gulch is the setting for this fantasy, the first of a planned trilogy by the Montrose author.

“I write a lot of self-doubt situations because my characters are working through it,” Baird said. “In ‘Tokens and Omens,’ Alexa changes the most, going from the ‘I know what I want’ attitude, to the doubt.

She explores what it takes for someone to determine his or her own destiny.”

Baird wasn’t always a novelist.

She spent about 13 years as a handmade paper artist. She also taught entrepreneurship for at-risk high school stu-

dents, and for a time, she was a reflexologist.

Baird also had a brief career as a zombie in the film “I Am Alone,” which was shot in and around Montrose.

Baird paints rocks as a hobby, and this skill plays an important role in her book, since the tokens and omens are painted on rocks.

A number of these rocks are being placed around towns from Maine to California by members of Baird’s Street Team.

“They place the stones in public places,” she said. “On the release day of the novel, my husband and I leave on a five state, twowheel (motorcycle) 100-stone book tour.”

For Baird, the best part of being a writer is, “The joy of creating a story and

finding myself—the exhilaration of a new idea. Most of my ideas come from somewhere I’m not aware of, but ecstatically happy to have.”

She considers herself a “pantser.”

“I write by the seat of my pants,” she said. “I have no idea what I’m to write, but by half-way through, I know how the story is ending.”

Baird originally intended “Tokens and Omens” for middle schoolers, but her editor said that young adults were a better fit.

Baird tested her novel with a class of students at Montrose High School. Their teacher used a medieval theme throughout her curriculum, which corresponded well with the feel of the book. Her students analyzed Baird’s characters and then themselves with regards to values and roles.

“The medieval feast was the conclusion to the year-long read-

ing of the book by the class,” Baird said. “I dressed as Alexa, one of the main characters. The teacher, Dawn Olert, dressed as a fortune-teller, also a character in the book, and the boys came up with their own costumes, including tunics, hats, swords and bows.”

Her advice for prospective novelists is, “Read, read, read in the genre you write in. Write without censoring your words. Take online classes and find a critique group that’s supportive and kind, but with members who can give constructive feedback.”

Baird’s next book in the trilogy, “Curses and Warfare” is set for release in July 2017.

ASK THE OLD BAG Advice Column for the Over 50 Crowd

By Gayle Lagman-Creswick Dear Old Bag: Your response to the lady whose lesbian granddaughter was being “married” contained the most egregious misuse of Dr. Niebuhr’s prayer that I have yet to read. It is known as “The Serenity Prayer” and does not ask for accepting change— rather for the serenity to accept things that cannot be changed. There’s a world of difference! The lady asking advice obviously believed that her attendance at this so-called wedding would have indicated her acceptance of a lifestyle that was morally repugnant to her—and you called her a coward!

She needed understanding and she received criticism. It would have been far more beneficial to her had she been advised to sincerely determine whether she wanted to risk being scorned by her daughter and granddaughter after she had told them she loved them dearly, but that she could not conscientiously attend. If the scorn was to be, then the daughter and granddaughter are the ones with the problem. Signed, GBK Dear GBK: I do not believe it was a misuse of “The Serenity Prayer.” The woman who wrote in was in a quandary, facing what many grandparents are facing today. Do I lose the love of my children/grandchildren, or cause a major family upheaval, or do I accept that this is the way it is going to be, and go along? It does not mean you have to agree with what they are doing. I believe that acceptance is

the greater part of loving. We try to teach our children unconditional love.

Perhaps you and I have a different concept of unconditional love? By the way, I did not call her a coward.

Thank you for writing. OB Dear Old Bag: My problem is a small one, but it perplexes me. I am 80 years old. I am in good health, exercise daily and take very few medications. However, I am slower and tire more easily, and I am more cautious to avoid falling. I enjoy staying in at night, except for an occasional dinner out. I attend all family functions, although I am finding that they sometimes wear me out and I long to go home. The problem is that I don’t believe my four children and my grandchildren have any idea that I have aged. They want me to go everywhere and do everything with them. If I say I am too tired, they say, “Oh, Mom, you know you love doing these things.” Help me! Signed, Tired Dear Tired: You must be a great gal if your kids and grandkids always want you with them. My letters are usually the other way around, and grandmothers write that they feel left out and abandoned! My advice: Tell them with love that you are ready to cut back on your activities, and you hope they will understand. Then don’t be afraid to refuse a few invitations, or cut short a visit—with great love! Good luck. OB ■

A couple from Minneapolis decided to go to Florida for a long weekend to thaw out during one particularly icy winter. Because both of them had jobs, they had difficulty coordinating their travel schedules. It was decided that the husband would fly to Florida on a Thursday and his wife would fly the next day.

Upon arriving as planned, the husband checked into the hotel and opened his laptop to send his wife an email.

However, he accidentally left off one letter in her address and sent the email without realizing his error.

Meanwhile, in Houston, a widow had just returned from her husband’s funeral. He was a minister of many years who had been “called home to glory” following a heart attack. The widow checked her email, expecting messages from relatives and friends. Upon reading the first message she fainted and fell to the floor. The widow’s son rushed into the room, found his mother on the floor and saw the computer screen, which read: To: My Loving Wife From: Your Departed Husband Subject: I’ve Arrived!

I’ve just arrived and have been checked in. I see that everything has been prepared for your arrival tomorrow.

Looking forward to seeing you. Hope your journey is as uneventful as mine was.

But that isn’t the only sport connection to the city. It’s home to the Muhammed Ali Center and the factory where the Louisville Slugger is made. The city likes to be called the “Bourbon Capital of the World” but it’s much more than that. To get a better taste of the history and culture, here are 10 must-visit destinations in Louisville.

How can I care for my garden in a way that’s safe for the environment?

Garden Smarts, By Kathy Kimbrough Q. I would like to care for my landscape and vegetable garden in the most responsible and environmentally safe way possible, but some of the weeds and insects are so darn stubborn that I feel I must use chemicals. Is there another way?

I think most people feel the way you do. We only want to use chemicals as a last resort but sometimes there seems to be no other solution. There is a strategy call Integrated Pest Management (IPM), which can save you money, protect the environment and encourage beneficial insects to work for you. These tips can be found in the CSU Extension Publication 2.945, available from your local CSU Extension office.

• Place plants in garden locations that are appropriate for them. Too hot, too dry, too wet, or too windy conditions invite problems. For example, junipers planted in a hot, dry space, like a south-facing wall, are likely to attract spider mites.

• Be a good observer in your garden and identify pest problems before they escalate. Then spot treat the problem.

• Use the least toxic measures possible.

Sometimes the solution is mechanical—pick off that tomato hornworm or knock off those aphids or spider mites with strong water pressure from the garden hose.

Use row covers over young plants that attract flea beetles, aphids or leafminers. You can buy sticky traps: white ones for flea beetles and yellow ones for fungus gnats or whiteflies.

Insecticidal soap works on aphids and other soft-bodied insects. Horticultural oils can control scale insects, aphids and mites on trees and shrubs. Bt kills caterpillars only. These types of substances, specific for certain pests and used only where the pests are present, allow beneficial insects, like lady beetles and lacewings, to live to do their job. If using other chemicals becomes necessary, choose the least toxic and least persistent in the environment. Read the label before buying any insect/disease control product, and follow the label directions exactly. ■

H

illtop has seen exponential growth since the organization’s start over 65 years ago. Their secret? Adapting to change and embracing it. Because of this response to change, Hilltop has provided needed care for residents of the area, evolving as necessary, based on medical advances and changes in society and the community.

When Mesa County Society for Crippled Children and Adults Hilltop House opened its doors in 1950, its mission was to serve those suffering from polio by providing rehabilitative outpatient care. But when Jonas Salk invented the polio vaccine in the mid-50s, the focus for the organization had to change.

Continuing the focus on rehabilitation, in 1970 services were expanded to include occupational and speech therapy, with the construction of a hospital and pool, reaching out to residents between Salt Lake City and Denver.

Hilltop’s second major transition occurred when rehabilitative services were duplicating those available at the growing St. Mary’s Hospital. In 1996, the facility was sold to the hospital, and became St. Mary’s Life Center. Hilltop’s merge with The Resource Center the next year allowed them to provide a variety of community-based social services that now serves all ages from prenatal to the elderly, in Mesa, Montrose, Delta and Ouray counties.

HopeWest received perfect results on unannounced state survey For the second consecutive time, HopeWest received perfect results from an on-site survey of hospice organizations conducted every three years by the Health Facilities Division of the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE). The goal of the survey is to assure the hospice is following state and federal regulations, from administration organization to quality of patient care. The surveyors make visits to patients, talk with family members and staff, review medical records, review policies and procedures, and assess the hospice’s quality management program.

Montrose Memorial Hospital starts conversation on Women’s Cancer concerns Montrose Memorial Hospital will lead a program to study the prevalence of breast, cervical and colorectal cancers in local women. Called an environmental scan, the research will help the hospital better understand issues relating to these cancers for the approximately 25,000 women who live in Montrose, Ouray and San Miguel

counties. Comprised of interviews with area health care providers and local residents, the process will allow the hospital to explore available resources and recommend evidence-based interventions to increase cancer screenings.

The research is funded by a $25,000 grant from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment – Women’s Wellness Connection. The hospital will report its findings and provide recommendations on how to increase cancer screenings with the affected demographic in hopes of providing a path to better health outcomes. America marches blindly toward single-payer health care

H

illary Clinton just dipped her toe a little bit further into the waters of single-payer health care, prodded by her competitor for the Democratic presidential nomination, Bernie Sanders.

She recently called for allowing more people to join Medicare, the government-run healthcare program for seniors, by allowing those age 55 or 50 and up to buy into it.

Sanders can no doubt take credit for pulling her further left—his proposal to expand Medicare to all Americans has evinced cheers from his partisans.

But the record of other single-payer systems should silence those cheers. Single-payer would destroy health care quality and rob patients blind in the process.

Sanders has been agitating for single-payer for decades. The supposed price tag of his latest proposal for “Medicare-for-All?” About $14 trillion over 10 years, he’s claimed.

But according to studies from the Urban Institute and the Tax Policy Center, the real cost would be about $33 trillion. Even after accounting for the revenue that Sanders’ plethora of new taxes would take in, the government would still need $16 trillion.

Nevertheless, Sanders’ focus on single-payer has attracted attention.

A recent survey found that 63 percent of people had a positive reaction to the term “Medicare for all.”

Meanwhile, thousands of doctors recently signed on to a plan similar to Sanders’.

Some states could even greenlight single-payer in the coming months. This November, Colorado voters will decide whether or not to create a state-level single-payer system. The initiative would cost $38 billion annually and require billions in new taxes.

Take note: Sanders’ home state of Vermont tried to implement a single-payer system and failed.

The state’s attempt at single-payer in 2014 was projected to cost $4.3 billion—almost equivalent to the state’s entire $4.9 billion budget. To fund the program, Vermont would have needed an extra $2 billion in revenue, plus new taxes on businesses and residents. Officials abandoned the idea because it would have collapsed the state’s economy.

The recent history of single-payer systems sponsored by the federal government isn’t much more encouraging.

Take the Veterans Health Administration, which continues to subject beneficiaries to lengthy waits for care. In March, the Government Accountability Office tracked the experience of 180 newly enrolled vets and found that 60 waited as many as 71 days to see a primary care doctor. Sixty more never even managed to get an appointment.

Patients haven’t fared much better under single-payer systems abroad.

Horror stories from Britain’s National Health Service emerge almost daily. Recently, a government investigation found that hospitals are discharging elderly patients without ensuring they’re fit to go home.

This spring, thousands of junior doctors went on strike. Patients had no choice but to wait for the walkout to end, as hospitals postponed more than 112,000 appointments and 12,700 operations in response.

Canadians must wait an average of 18.3 weeks to see a specialist after getting a referral.

The promise of single-payer— high quality, universally accessible, free—is nothing like the reality of such a system. Taxpayers pay dearly for the promise of such care.

This fall, voters must not allow themselves to fall prey to the siren song of single-payer. ■
