Is Brock Osweiler a babe?

By Kevin VanGundy “Out of the mouth of babes” is an expression that generally means that young people can sometimes say surprisingly wise things. At just 25 years young, clearly a babe in my book, Denver Broncos Quarterback Brock Osweiler made such an observation in describing his team’s recent win in OT against the Cincinnati Bengals.

He said, “It’s not how you start, it’s how you finish.”

Indeed. I was having dinner with a few seniors at Texas Roadhouse and we were watching the big game.

Wow, the Broncos looked awful that first quarter. One of my fellow Bronco fans, I’m guessing in his mid-70’s, started talking passionately about his work in the Forest Service before retirement. Clearly, he missed the work very much.

Sensing his loss of purpose and having some knowledge of the local senior scene, I suggested several volunteer positions that might get him back to the forest. Yet, each opportunity I presented was immediately rejected. As we watched the Broncos turn into donkeys, we gave up hope and went our separate ways.

That was a mistake!

In a thrilling second half of football the Broncos tied the game and eventually won over the Bengals in overtime. It just goes to show you (and me again) that it isn’t over until it’s over.

Some seniors believe, but many don’t What if today, my senior friend and I—and you—all made a point to finish this race better than how we started it? Can you imagine what 2016 could be like if you and I were to take all that life has taught us and apply it with enthusiasm to our new year? Or, the rest of our lives?

Here are a few examples.

You may remember that a couple of Christmases ago I had written that Ula Kirkman, a fan favorite at many of our BeaconFest senior fairs, had become sick with cancer. I’m sad to say that she passed away this past month, but I’m happy to report that in between rounds of chemotherapy she was still performing and entertaining throughout the valley.

I’m afraid of heights, but these folks aren’t. In this month’s Health & Wellness insert we’ll introduce you to local boomers and seniors who climb for exercise and fun. In one case, you’ll meet a grandmother who goes climbing with her daughter and grandson.

In another inspirational article, you’ll read of a mother, a daughter and a blind man who have hiked the Colorado Trail. Awesome!

An evening of fun and perhaps, romance This Valentine’s Day, the BEACON Senior Newspaper will again team up with Hilltop Senior Life Options to put on our very own senior social and dance, featuring Clark Gault’s Swing City Express playing the best of the big band-era dance music.

Dancers can glide across a real wooden dance floor in a ballroom decorated for romantic ambience.

Be prepared — for anything Staying safe in winter requires that you pack, dress and act appropriately.

Planning: Check weather forecasts before embarking. Winter days are short, so set up camp or head home before dark.

Someone at home should know your destination and estimated return time. Don’t bet your life on a cell phone or two-way radio.

Know how to use GPS devices, compasses and maps if you’re counting on them. The BLM (244-3000) and Colorado National Monument Visitor Center (858-3617) have maps and advice about exploring the public lands they manage.

Clothing: Dress in layers and pack extra clothes. The base layer should be a synthetic material or merino wool to wick away sweat. A middle layer of fleece or down insulates, and a waterproof outer shell protects against wind and rain. Avoid cotton. Gloves, sunglasses, hat, socks and insulated boots are essentials.

Emergency gear: Tote as much water as you can carry; leave more at camp or in your vehicle. Have food, emergency blankets, waterproof matches, headlamps and extra batteries, a first-aid kit and sunscreen.

Stay sober: Avoid overindulgence in alcohol and drugs, as they can impair judgment and compound the risks of winter exposure.

W

inter arrives in the Grand Valley well before the calendar acknowledges it. At the first hint that fall is evolving into something more severe, snowbirds flee for warmer roosts, hibernators dive for their dens and speed devotees head for their favorite ski slopes.

In their absence, traffic thins on many area trails and back roads, and anyone who longs for personal space can find it in the immense expanses of public lands in and near Mesa County.

These less-traveled spots invite active seniors of all abilities to witness the world in winter’s sublime light and stillness — a setting that can punish the skin and sinuses but reward the ears, eyes and nerves.

A fresh layer of snow muffles sound and reshapes the land, and those differences attract cross-country skiers and snowshoers to the trailheads of Grand Mesa and the Uncompahgre Plateau every weekend after the first snowfall.

Popular trails closest to Grand Junction get busy as the day warms up,

but early arrivals who are unintimidated by deep cold relish the relative privacy. And retirees? They can wait for a weekday and luxuriate in the solitude.

At lower elevations, the ground can be bare for long stretches between fall and spring, tempting cyclists and hikers to act like it’s summer even when it’s not.

White open spaces Now is the best time to visit the Piceance-East Douglas Herd Management Area on the east side of Highway 139, because that’s when the wild horses move to lower elevations to graze, according to Chris Joyner, public affairs officer for the Bureau of Land Management in Grand Junction.

Even during peak seasons, remote destinations like Devils Canyon in the McInnis Canyons National Conservation Area, Canyon Pintado National Historic District and Dominguez-Escalante National Conservation Area don’t draw big crowds, Joyner said. In winter they’re downright deserted.

And many trails in these spots are snow-free for much of the season, making them accessible to people

who prefer the narrower gait of a hiking boot to the clown-shoe stride of a snowshoe.

Recreationists sticking to developed trails should beware of losing their way by mistaking an animal trail for the true route. “Every year, when we have the first false spring, people will go out hiking and some will get on a game trail and get lost,” Joyner said.

But winter’s adventures aren’t just for seniors with good knees, lungs and hearts. Wheelchair users and others with limited mobility don’t need to feel trapped inside just because it’s crisp outside.

Many of the ancient Fremont and Ute rock art panels in Canyon Pintado are easily visible from Highway 139 for sightseers unable to cover the distance on foot for a closer look, Joyner said.

Likewise, the 26 miles of Rim Rock Drive on the Colorado National Monument are accessible for drive-by observers and day hikers. The visitor center and frequent viewpoints are safe places to stop and fully digest the area’s impressive natural assets, including the Grand Valley, Colorado River, Uncompahgre Plateau, Grand Mesa and Book Cliffs.

privileged to work in such a beautiful place. Jackson is chief of interpretation at the monument’s visitor center.

“The snow accentuates the rocks in different ways, and it highlights different things,” she said. “You see layers you didn’t notice before.”

The monument’s visitor center is open 364 days a year (closed only on Christmas day). Crews keep Rim Rock Drive snow- and ice-free, though a major storm might cause a temporary closure. The park hot line (858-3617, Ext. 402) has updates on road conditions.

In the winter, Jackson said, “There are a lot fewer visitors, so people can take their time on the road and look around a little bit. You can see things (like) bighorn sheep playing near the road. The other thing that’s really nice about winter is that you feel like you have the place to yourself, and you can absorb that quiet.”

It can also be sunny and warmer at the park’s higher elevation when Grand Valley residents are shivering under an inversion layer, she said.

“I’ve left my home in Fruita when it was 10 degrees; by the time I reached the visitor center, it was 29.”

The sun can quickly melt snow on many portions of the 32-square-mile park, making its trails and sandstone plateaus simple to traverse.

Dogs aren’t allowed on trails in the monument, but they’re welcome on BLM-managed recreation areas just

outside the park’s boundaries.

Cold comfort In any season, nature is indifferent to the suffering of people whose outdoor play doesn’t go as planned.

A 72-year-old mountain biker who was injured in a crash in the North Desert area off 27 ¼ Road spent two days and one night outdoors before his wife returned from a trip and called the sheriff’s office.

The resilient cyclist survived the mid-October accident, but the outcome might have been tragic in winter, when days are shorter and even daytime temperature can linger in the teens.

“The most important thing for people to do is let someone know where they’re going and when they’ll be back,” said Mesa County Sheriff’s Deputy Ben Lawrence, a remotearea search and rescue coordinator.

“Don’t assume you’re not going to have a problem. Plan for double the time; if you think you’ll be out for two hours, plan for four.”

Hydration is just as critical in January as it is in July, he added.

“Make sure you have plenty of water, because it’s incredibly dry and easy to become dehydrated.”

That advice holds true for recreationists of all ages, but athletic and outdoorsy elders sometimes overestimate their stamina and dexterity, he said. “As we age, we have a more difficult time regulating body temperature. It’s easier for older people to get hypothermia” and to suffer serious injuries in a fall.

Age brings a more mature appraisal of winter’s risks, but that’s no reason to fear its rewards. The cure for cabin fever is out there, on the other side of indoors. ■

Get creative at any age

W

hat is it about creativity that seems to freeze most people whenever the word is mentioned?

They say, “Oh, I’m not creative” or “I’m not an artist.” Or writer, quilt designer, musician, or fill in the blank with any of a thousand endeavors that seem to frighten us. The boomer generation grew up with the idea of sticking to something safe, something that would bring us the American Dream: a house in the suburbs, two cars, 2.5 kids, and a job that we worked for 40 years. Anyone silly enough to pursue a passion for music, fine art or writing was told that it’s fine to starve in a garret when we’re in our 20s, but then we’d better be ready to settle down.

And how did that work for you? Do you have unfulfilled dreams of making something beautiful? (Besides the grandkids, that is.) Still craving the feel of clay between your hands? The smoothness of piano keys under your fingers? The smell of turpentine and oil paint? It’s not too late to recapture that passion. Even though the people mentioned in this article started their creative careers earlier than 50, they can inspire the rest of us to try something that we’ve always wanted to do.

Bob Alster, 67, grew up in New Jersey and began playing guitar in high school, then started playing professionally in 1967.

After moving to Colorado, he opened a talent booking agency in Summit County in 1982.

But he still kept his hands on the strings of his chosen instruments. He begins practice at about 6:30 every morning and plays for a couple of hours, working out complicated chords and rhythms for both classical pieces and standards, such as “Autumn Leaves” and “Girl from Ipanema.” Locally, he plays at Le Rouge downtown, as well as The Winery.

He told horror stories about gigs gone wrong, but he also said, “The best is when I’m truly connecting with my audience and can feel the energy from them.”

Sue Hughey, a spritely senior well into her golden years, moved to Denver, where her father, a retired art professor and master potter, and she opened Associated Arts, a graphic arts studio, ceramic studio, and art gallery in Lakewood. In 1975, the economic recession forced them to cut back to only the graphic arts studio, mainly because by then it had evolved into a map drafting company, producing plates for USGS topography and geologic maps, and BLM land maps.

Her writing career began at age 7 when she published and distributed a neighborhood newspaper. In high school she worked on the school paper. In the early 1970s, the Environmental Protection Agency contracted with her to write and illustrate a children’s book titled, “Fun With the Environment,” which was

distributed to millions of elementary school children. Canada requested, and was granted, the right to print and distribute the book in that country.

She went on to create large historical and educational maps and posters, which she self-published and sold. In 1973, she won the top $5,000 prize for designing the Colorado coin that was part of Franklin Mint’s 50 State Bicentennial collection. In 1974, she won the $500 prize for designing Colorado’s Centennial/Bicentennial coin, which by an act of Congress, became the first commemorative coin ever minted in a U.S. mint.

After retiring in 1996, she wrote and illustrated a children’s book, “Herby’s Secret Formula,” followed by an adult adventure titled “A Nest Egg Poached.” She self-published both books and placed in several book contests with “Herby,” which also placed second in the Colorado Independent Publishers’ Association juvenile fiction category.

“For me, writing is harder than drawing,” Hughey said. “One never hears of ‘artist’s block’.”

But she said the hardest thing about either is making time for them.

“When I pass, they’ll probably have to either pry an art pencil from my cold dead hand, or pry my fingers off my computer keyboard,” she said.

Virginia Jensen, 74, made a living as a graphic designer for many years, dabbling in writing on the side. After a move to New Mexico, she wrote every day and completed

a novel, as yet unpublished. In 1999 she and husband Rich moved to Grand Junction, where she found it difficult if not impossible to find a job as a designer. She went to work at Michael’s craft store, arranging the classroom for demonstration classes.

When a need arose for a beadwork teacher, she knew she could do it even though she’d not strung a bead since she was a child.

Using her background in graphic art, she was soon applying her knowledge of color and pattern to bead weaving, making collars, cuffs and other pieces of jewelry reminiscent of ancient Egypt, one of her passions at the time. Soon she began making more pieces and wrote instructions that were published in Bead and Button magazine. Before long, she was under contract to Kalmbach Press to write a book on beading. Another book followed, and when she discovered two-hole beads, she embraced that art and wrote a book of instructions for that.

“Part of my success is focus,” Jensen said of her beading. “I treat this as a profession, not a hobby. I was pushed into starting over. I had to stretch myself.”

Her one-of-a-kind pieces are displayed in the Oakley Gallery and at Crystal Books in downtown Grand Junction, as well as galleries in Gunnison and Ridgway.

Although these creative individuals have long histories of following their passions, it’s never too late to begin to follow yours. Always wanted to dance? Contact one of the local studios for instruction in everything from ballroom to ballet. Always doodling? Pick up a sketchbook and some pens and ink, and make art.

Has clay fascinated you? There are many studios that give classes. Want to write? Check out writing classes at Western Colorado Community College. Does fabric speak to your soul?

There are several textile arts groups in the area, specializing in quilting, embroidery, weaving, and other fiber arts. If you want to learn it or do it,

chances are there’s a place for you.

A good resource for jumpstarting your imagination is “The Artist’s Way,” a book by Julia Cameron. This 12-week program instructs and inspires budding artists in any discipline as well as more experienced folks suffering from artistic blocks.

The Art Center also holds classes in all the fine arts: ceramics, life drawing, watercolor, oil painting, batik and much more. The Mesa County libraries have shelves full of books on every artistic pursuit.

Instead of aging gracefully, sculpt, samba, weave or watercolor your way through the years. Live with passion and love what you do. ■

Instructions: Heat oven to 350 F. Using a meat mallet, pound out chicken breasts until they are about a 1/4- to 1/2-inch thick. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper, and place into preheated skillet over medium-high heat with two tablespoons of oil. Cook until brown on both sides, about two minutes per side. Layer chicken into an 8-by-8inch baking pan.

In small bowl, combine tomato sauce, basil, oregano, sucralose and Parmesan cheese. Mix with spoon and pour over chicken. Layer mozzarella on top and bake 25-30 minutes, until cheese is melted and sauce is bubbly.

During the last 10 minutes of cooking the chicken, add garlic and baby broccoli in the same skillet used to cook the chicken. Sauté until broccoli is crisp-tender, about five minutes.

Serve broccoli with chicken immediately.

By Gayle Lagman-Creswick Dear Old Bag: I was wondering if you could help me. I am recently widowed, and I was married for 45 years. I am having a hard time getting on with my life. Do you know anybody who is in my same situation that I could write to?

I don’t know anything about computers and I don’t drive, so it is hard for me.

Please if you know anyone give them my address. Thank you, A.F. Dear A.F: There are others in your same boat but I’m sorry, I cannot connect you to them. Many couples are close and dependent upon each other.

When one is gone they feel lost. Here are my suggestions: 1) Place a friendship ad in the BEACON, asking for a pen pal. Do not give out your address. Use a post office box number.

2) Research transportation options for seniors in your area. There are many sources. You can call your local Area Agency on Aging (Grand Junction 248-2717; Montrose-Delta 249-2436), and ask for their help. My readers tell me this agency has helped them many times.

3) Churches are great sources for meeting people and some even offer transportation to services.

4) Do you know your neighbors and have any offered to help with transportation?

5) If you can afford it, move yourself into a retirement community where you will have transportation, friends, fun things to do and meals prepared for you. If your finances are low, the Area Agency can recommend some that are low cost.

6) Use every bit of your creativity to get yourself out into the community.

7) If you did not go to a grief support group, I highly recommend it. You will meet others in the same situation.

Dear Old Bag: For the last 10 years of my husband’s life, we had no sex.

My husband had treatment for advanced prostate cancer and he could not perform. I want to tell your readers that there is an intimacy that is deeper than sex could ever be. We became closer than ever. When I read these letters from people who treat sex as if it is the last supper, I cringe. Please tell them.

What’s new for Social Security in 2016? Not much

ou’ve probably already heard that Social Security recipients will not get a raise in their benefits in 2016.

One person’s bad news is often the next guy’s good news. Social Security raises are tied to inflation, and of course high inflation is bad for the economy as a whole. But high inflation means a stiff raise in Social Security benefits. This year, inflation was ultra-low, and that means no raise for Social Security. For 2015, benefits rose only slightly, by 1.7 percent.

For 2016, the average monthly benefit for Social Security recipients will be $1,341, and for retired couples who both receive benefits, the average check will be $2,212. The maximum benefit a person can draw in 2016 is $2,639. This is actually down from the 2015 level of $2,663 by $24. Why did this change? These figures are calculated using a different measure.

Other News That Isn’t New The wage base for paying into Social Security If you’re still working and make a six-figure income, you will not see an increase in how much you pay into Social Security tax. Workers pay 7.65 percent on the first $118,500 (known as the wage base) plus 1.45 percent on earnings over that amount. In most years, that wage base rises, taking a slightly bigger bite from high earners. But for 2016 there will be no hike in the wage base.

Working while drawing benefits If you draw benefits and also work, but you haven’t yet reached your full retirement age, the amount you can earn before losing some of your benefits doesn’t change in 2016. Just as in 2015, you can earn up to $15,720 without affecting your Social Security. Before this amount, you forfeit $1 for every $2 you earn. For example, if you earn an additional $1,000 (for a

total of $16,720) you will forfeit $500 in benefits.

If you reach your full retirement age in 2016 (which is currently 66), the earnings limit rises to $41,880 for the months before your 66th birthday. And, for any amount you earn above that limit, you will forfeit $1 for every $3 you earn. So let’s say you turn 66 in June of 2016. For January through May, you earn $1,200 over the limit of $41,880. You would forfeit $1 for every $3 of the excess of $1,200 (a total of $400).

In the month you reach your full retirement age, you may earn any amount without losing any benefits.

Using the same example, if you turn 66 in June of 2016, any amounts you earn from June 1 on will not cause the loss of a single dollar of Social Security.

Medicare premiums By law, Medicare Part B premiums cannot increase faster than Social Security benefits for most recipients; therefore, these premiums will not generally change. However, premiums will be higher for people who first sign up for Medicare Part B in 2016, and for certain high-income Medicare beneficiaries.

Benefits for children There’s a little-known Social Security benefit that children may qualify to receive. If you’re eligible for Social Security and still raising young children, the kids may be able to draw benefits based on your record.

According to the Social Security Administration, the child must be the biological or adopted child of an insured worker, or in some cases, a dependent stepchild or grandchild of an insured worker. The benefits paid for children are in addition to payments to the workers themselves.

To qualify, the children must be under age 18 and unmarried (or if they are still in high school but over 18, they can collect until they turn 19

or graduate, whichever comes first).

If the kids are disabled, other rules apply, so contact Social Security for the details.

When you file for Social Security retirement benefits, each qualifying child can get a benefit equal to half of what you receive at your full retirement age. This is true even if you apply for benefits earlier, at a reduced amount. You should know, though, that there’s a limit to how much money a family can collect, based on a complex “family maximum payment” formula. Let’s say you have two qualifying children collecting benefits on your record. If the maximum is exceeded, the payments to those children, but not to you, will be cut back. See ssa.gov/oact/ cola/familymax.html.

Here’s an example of how that is determined.

Suppose your full retirement age benefit is $2,200. Your

family maximum benefit is $3,700.

Your benefit remains the same, which leaves $1,500. If you have two qualifying children, the most they can each receive is half of the remaining $1,500 or $750 each.

afe driving is a challenge for drivers of any age. The risks for safe driving among older drivers increase with changes in medications, vision, hearing, flexibility, strength and endurance, reaction time and judgment/ cognition. It’s a tough truth for many seniors to accept, but help is available.

In 1979, AARP developed the nation’s first and largest refresher course designed specifically for older drivers. The program has helped millions of drivers age 50 and older learn proven safety strategies.

The theme throughout the course is that things change. While basics such as red means stop and green means go have not changed, newer components of driving such as vehicle technology and road design changes, along with the changes in our bodies, are all part of the current driving experience.

Eighteen years ago, Bob Kline took the AARP Smart Driver Course for the first time. Kline immediately decided to become a volunteer teacher

himself. He has dedicated himself to teaching ever since, averaging six classes per year, in addition to his responsibilities as district coordinator.

While some physical changes occur rapidly, others are so gradual that we may not be aware of them until someone like the family doctor raises the issue. Side effects from medications, alcohol, arthritis, depression, high or low blood pressure, sleep disorders, changes in visual acuity, hearing loss, and a decline in alertness, brain function and the ability to concentrate and react quickly are just a few challenges of getting older.

Advances in vehicle technologies can enhance driving skills or detract from them if they aren’t understood.

Voice-activated systems, smart headlights, and reverse monitoring and warning systems can all be beneficial to informed drivers.

What about the future?

Practices for safe driving “Am I fit to drive today?” is a simple question that can have a major impact on your safety as well as that of your passengers and fellow road users AARP says. Safe driving is a complex skill that requires adequate physical, visual and mental abilities.

As these abilities change over time and even day to day, due to age and medical conditions, the key to the question is asking about today.

Planning ahead and selecting routes can often lead to a stress-free trip and avoidance of potentially dangerous situations. Stay clear of busy or confusing intersections, construction areas, poorly lit streets, rush-hour traffic, bad weather and frequent left turns. Combine errands whenever possible.

Make sure you have a clear line of sight over the steering wheel and you don’t have to stretch to reach the pedals. Make sure rear and side view mirrors are adjusted before you begin driving and make sure to scan them

If you’ve noticed that friends or family members are showing signs of having difficulty driving, it’s time to talk with them. The fear of loss of independence makes discussions about driving issues difficult and emotional. When conducted with sensitivity, they have the potential to save lives—both theirs and the lives of others.

Share your concern for the person’s overall wellbeing while preserving his or her dignity. Be persistent, as it may take several conversations.

Be supportive of any positive changes the driver has already made, such as reducing night driving. Talk about the availability of other transportation methods such as family, friends, neighbors, taxis, public transportation and volunteer services.

Driving assessments are available by specially trained occupational therapists. If a person with serious driving deficiencies does not respond to any of these efforts, you may have to report the person to the state’s department of motor vehicles as a last resort.

It’s a fact that the aging process can interfere with skills needed to safely operate a vehicle. Be aware of changes in vision, hearing, reaction time, muscular strength and flexibility, more frequent use of multiple medications and side effects of medical conditions that interfere with basic driving skills.

our doctor was checking your carotid arteries on the sides of your neck to see if the blood flow to your brain was blocked. If one of the arteries was blocked, it would make a “swoosh” that the medical profession calls a bruit. Bruit is pronounced “BROO-ee” like “phooey.”

The common diagnostic tests for carotid artery disease are: carotid duplex scan, an ultrasound study that shows the location and size of the problem; arteriogram, which is an X-ray; Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA) and computerized tomography (CT Scan) of the brain for damage.

Carotid arteries run from the aorta— the main trunk of the arterial system— up to your brain. When these vessels become blocked, you have carotid artery disease, which can cause a stroke.

The amount of blockage in a carotid artery determines the risk of having a stroke. If the blockage becomes severe enough, you may need surgery to open the blood flow to your brain.

The chances of developing this disease increase with age. About one percent of people in their 50s have significantly blocked carotid arteries, but 10 percent of people in their 80s have carotid artery disease.

In carotid endarterectomy, a surgeon makes an incision in the neck to open a carotid artery. The blockage is removed and the artery is closed.

As you age, a sticky substance called plaque, which contains cholesterol, can accumulate on the inside walls of your arteries. The process is called atherosclerosis or hardening of the arteries.

Some of the causes of carotid artery disease are high blood pressure, cholesterol in your blood, smoking and diabetes.

It is possible to fight carotid artery disease. First, quit smoking. This is probably the most significant thing you can do to combat this disease. In addition to quitting smoking, you should get regular exercise, eat a healthy diet and keep your weight down.

Carotid artery stenting is a procedure in which a wire mesh tube called a stent is positioned and expanded across the blockage in the artery.

In its early stages, carotid artery disease may have no symptoms. The initial indication could be a stroke. However, you may experience warning symptoms of a stroke called transient ischemic attacks or TIAs, which usually last less than an hour.

TIA symptoms include: weakness, numbness, or a tingling on one side of your body; inability to control a limb; loss of vision in one eye; and inability to speak clearly.

If you experience TIA symptoms, contact your physician immediately. ■

Obviously, if you have high blood pressure, too much cholesterol in your blood, or diabetes, you should be treating those.

In Football We Trust

Documentary shows reality of young Polynesian football players

I

ndie Lens Pop Up, presented by the Independent Television Service (ITVS), Independent Lens, Rocky Mountain PBS and Mesa County Libraries, is excited to offer an advance screening of “In Football We Trust,” a film by Tony Vainuku and Erika Cohn. The documentary will screen Wednesday, January 20, 2016 in the Community Room of the Mesa County Central Library.

“In Football We Trust” transports viewers deep inside a tightly knit and complex Polynesian community in Salt Lake City, Utah, one of the chief sources of the modern influx of Pacific Islander football players to the NFL. Shot over a four-year period with intimate access, the film follows four young Polynesian men striving to overcome gang violence and poverty through the promise of American football.

Despite overwhelming obstacles, Polynesians are 28 times more likely than any other ethnic group to make it to the NFL, a surprising statistic

that opens the film. Some refer to this phenomenon as a “calling” or a gift from God; others credit genetics, socio-cultural influences or stereotyping, or the push and pull of global sports capitalism.

Regardless, many Polynesian families view football as their ticket out of economic hardship and gang life. However, “In Football We Trust” reveals that those expectations are often unrealistic and place insurmountable pressure on these young players. In addition to the stories of the four young athletes, the film includes footage and interviews with current and former NFL players Troy Polamalu, Haloti Ngata, Star Lotulelei and Vai Sikahema.

On the day Joe graduates from high school, he joins the U.S. Army. At boot camp, he’s assigned the roughest, toughest, no-nonsense drill instructor sergeant. This guy makes Joe’s life miserable, but he hangs in there and makes it through. Joe is so happy to

get to his first assignment.

However, when Joe gets there, he finds out that his boot camp sergeant is there also, and he’s in his company. Needless to say, Joe’s enlistment is anything but enjoyable – but he makes his mind up to stick it out.

On his last day, Joe is packing to go home. The sergeant says, “So, you’re quitting the Army to be a candy a** – a civilian. Well, I’m happy I made it hard on you.”

Joe says, “I’m happy that I’ll never see you again.” The sergeant replies, “Oh, you’ll see me again. I bet that when I die, you’ll come to my funeral just to spit on my grave.” Joe says, “No, I’m not going to do that.”

“Thank you very much for the call, Sir.” The next day the Sheriff and his deputies descend upon Virgil’s home. They search the shed where the firewood is kept. Using axes, they bust open every piece of wood, but find no marijuana.

Busting Travel Myths

F

rom Europe to Asia to South America and throughout the United States, travel is our window to the world and a great way to broaden our horizons. With computers, package deals, competitive airline, lodging and car rental options at increasingly affordable prices, the opportunity to travel far and wide has never been easier.

Travel myths that become repeated as truths, on closer examination deserve to be taken with a grain of salt.

It’s time to shed light on the other side of the story, and dispel myths ranging from hype to pure nonsense.

Using your cell phone on a flight will make the plane crash.

The use of mobile phones on flights was banned during the 1990s—the fear being that the phones would interfere with the pilot’s instruments and cause accidents.

A study by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in 2006 could not prove this to be the case; however, they were unable to conclusively prove that cell phone use did not lead to accidents. Thus the ban has been retained.

If the plane door is opened during flight, everyone will get sucked out.

It is commonly believed that since the airplane cabin is so highly pressurized, people would be sucked out if the emergency door were opened.

Basically, you can’t open the emergency doors during cruising altitude for the simple reason that cabin pressure won’t allow it.

There is a standard size for carry-on bags used by all major airlines.

Aircraft bin space has emerged as prime real estate as travelers try to avoid checked-bag charges. Several airlines have reduced the size of acceptable carry-ons, and most have gotten stricter about enforcing size rules. The smart thing to do is to visit your carrier’s website before you fly, to confirm their current restrictions, or risk having to check them.

The airlines will never charge for carry-on bags.

Never say never. Frontier, Spirit and Allegiant already charge for carry-on bags and it’s a waiting game as to whether other major carriers will follow suit.

Currency conversion rates are better at home.

It’s easy to assume that getting your foreign currency before traveling abroad is the best deal. Commissions and poor exchange rates may surprise you. Often, your best bet is to use specialized bank accounts or credit cards, which don’t charge a commission when you use them abroad.

Breathing the air on airplanes will make you sick.

If that were the case, you would be served by flight attendants sneezing into your drinks. The air is recycled, yes, but also cleaned with HEPA filters. On planes, the most common places that transmit bacteria are the tray tables, plastic armrests, window shades and bathroom door handles.

Airplanes are not completely cleaned and wiped down as often as you may think. The best way to avoid sickness on flights is to takes wipes, regularly wash or sanitize your hands, and drink plenty of water.

You’ll be pick-pocketed abroad.

Reality is quite different from the common myth that implies foreign places are inherently more dangerous than home. The distorted perception of crime stems from the fact that criminals are likely to target those who appear vulnerable. Using common sense and taking precautions will usually ensure that you are at no more risk than you would be at home.

All-inclusive means everything is included.

at check out. But buyer beware, or at least be informed. Study their website, ask a lot of questions, and do your homework before assuming that things such as alcoholic beverages, using sports equipment, or taking excursions are included.

You must haggle abroad.

Although haggling is expected in many destinations and cultures, just because you can haggle does not always mean you should. Consider the affluence of where you are from in comparison to the vendor, and whether a few dollars is really worth it. If you do haggle, always smile and keep it light-hearted and in rhythm with the vendor’s enthusiasm, so no one ends up being offended.

English is understood everywhere.

English is the most widely understood language in the world, but it’s a travel myth to believe that it’s understood universally. Learning a few basic words of the local language— hello, good-bye, thank you, please, where is the bathroom?—is helpful.

Certainly, not speaking the language is hardly a reason not to travel.

You don’t need travel insurance.

It’s always wise to purchase travel insurance in case the absolute worst does happen. In some countries, it’s even a condition of entry. Health and homeowners insurance only go so far. Basic travel insurance usually provides for trip cancellation, trip interruption, lost luggage, travel assistance, medical care anywhere around the globe, accidental death and limited medical evacuation benefits. The investment can be money well spent.

I can book the same trip at cheaper prices without using a travel agent.

A good travel agent provides answers not readily available on the internet, is often able to get upgrades at no additional charge or a room when the website says they’re “full,” offers security and personal attention, and takes the stress out of creating a detailed itinerary. Also, the agent can often arrange for a free perk or two to be thrown in.

Airfare booking myths • Booking in advance will always

save you money. If you have flexibility over destinations and travel dates, you may very well find a fantastic deal offered at the last minute for a flight the airline is looking to fill. It’s a high-risk strategy, but one that can reward you with big savings.

• There is a secret day and time when each airline drops its prices during the week. Beating the airlines at their complex pricing game is a serious challenge. According to experts, unadvertised price drops can pop up at any moment of the week. Days and times vary, and the average savings are only between $5 and $15. A better strategy that may result in more significant savings is to sign up for price alerts.

Both kayak.com and airfarewatch dog.com offer such alerts. These websites also give you the advantage of checking the best deal between all airlines with one site visit, verses searching each airline website individually.

• Once you book and pay, that’s it, even if the fare drops later on.

Actually some airlines are more forgiving than others when it comes to dips in airfare. Check your agreements, as some airlines may offer you refunds in the form of a travel credit or allow you to re-book at the lower price with little or no fee if it’s done within 24 hours of booking.

• One-way tickets are always more expensive than round-trip. While this used to be the case, it doesn’t necessarily hold true today. Check both options, especially if you are flying in and out of two separate destinations and if travel dates cross between low and high seasons.

How can I keep my poinsettia alive and looking great until next Christmas?

oinsettias are easy to keep looking fresh and colorful for the first few months. After that, there are certain things you must do to ensure a rebloom in time for next Christmas. The CSU Extension suggests the following: • Always keep your poinsettia in the brightest part of your home and avoid placing it near cold drafts, radiators or heat vents.

• Water poinsettias thoroughly as needed.

• Remove the decorative foil and plant it in a pot with good drainage.

• Use a complete houseplant fertilizer every two weeks.

• If you want the plant to re-bloom, start the pruning process in April and finish by mid August. Remove the bracts and part of the stems. Leave three or four leaves on each remaining stem. Re-plant into a larger pot and apply a slow release fertilizer to the soil. Prune tall growth to keep the plant well formed.

• At the end of September, place the plant in total darkness for 14 hours a day. You can do this by placing the plant inside a large paper bag in a

closet.

Colored bracts (the colored leaves) should begin to appear in early November. ■

PLANT OF THE MONTH—Grape ivy (Cissus rhombifolia) Grape ivy is a classic houseplant that offers beautiful evergreen foliage and thrives in most home and office environments. This vine’s curling tendrils easily attach to a trellis or a stake, and look just as good when allowed to drape over a cabinet, shelf or hanging basket. Grape ivy appreciates fluorescent lights or low to moderate light from an east-facing window. It also likes regular water from spring through summer. Decrease water in fall and winter and allow soil to dry out between watering. Use a balanced houseplant food monthly.

GARDEN CHECKLIST:  Be sure to water your landscape once a month if there has not been sufficient rain or snowfall. Set your sprinklers out during the warmest part of the day and finish before the temperatures fall below freezing. Don’t just water the trunks of your trees.

The absorbing roots are in the lawn and outside the drip zone of the trees.  Create a winter habitat for the birds. A heated birdbath is an easy way to give the birds accessible water during sub freezing temperatures.

Leave seed heads on grasses and perennials. In the spring, plant fruit-producing trees and shrubs such as crabapples, serviceberries and currants.  Keep your gardening skills sharp by attending classes offered by Grand Junction Parks and Recreation. Topics include beekeeping, weed control, diagnosing plant problems and wildflowers.

A century ago, Jordan’s Inn burned to the ground

ordan’s Inn, a two-story brick hotel and office building on the corner of Palisade’s Third and Main Streets, was built in 1907. Just eight years later, it burned to the ground.

A front-page article from the November 19, 1915 The Palisade Tribune included the following details: “The Jordan Inn building and contents were entirely destroyed by fire at an early hour yesterday morning, entailing a loss of about $27,000. The total insurance will amount to only $5,700, the balance being a complete loss. The fire originated in the boiler room in the basement at the west end of the hotel building. Miss Grace Neal, who was sleeping in that end was awakened about 3:45 yesterday morning by the smell of dense smoke in her room and she hastily notified Mr. Jordan, who partly dressed and ran to the basement and turned on a hose, although the fire at that time

did not appear dangerous. Then he sent in the alarm and was soon joined by marshal Frank Mars. Pending the arrival of the fire department, they worked valiantly to stop the fire...it was soon evident the work of the fire department was not making headway against the flames, which were burning fiercely although the boys—assisted by every available man in town—were doing their best.

Shortly thereafter the floors in the rear of the building fell in and then it was too late to get the furniture or any clothing out. Four traveling men were in the hotel at the time and all made their escape with their effects.”

A spent fire hose lies on the rubble that was a two-story hotel. The firemen were able to save wooden buildings nearby, but not the brick hotel.

The loss included all the hotel furniture and clothing and keepsakes of the Jordans, including four valuable

guns, a diamond stud valued at $125, four watches and both Mr. and Mrs. Jordan’s entire wardrobes. Among the store losses were the billiard and pool room of Mr. Redmon, a large part of the Loeffler stock and fixtures, and all the equipment and stock of F. H Lescher’s shoe and harness repair shop. Nine big plate glass windows of the J.W. Hugus & Co. store across Third Street were badly damaged by the heat from the fire. Mr. Lescher saved his sewing machine, but was unable to recover $25 in silver he left in the room the

night before.

The Jordan’s Inn burned to the ground in November 1915. The lot remained empty until it was later a parking lot for Bill’s Market and Food Town Market. A few years ago, a Town Plaza was created at Third and Main Streets.

Once a Year Only?

I

do not make a New Year’s resolution every January. I simply take the first resolution I made many years ago and try to improve on it. I do keep an ongoing mental record of what I say and what I do. One can hardly improve if a constant and consistent effort is not made to learn from mistakes. In both July and January I make such a review. Below is my list, which you can add to or subtract from, and use as a jumping-off place.

There are those who never say I am sorry, or admit they should have turned left when they turned right. It is a guarantee for a wasted life. I do not fret and fuss about others being superior to me in certain areas. It can do nothing but create jealousy and that’s a first-class disease.

I never forget that learning how to fail is the secret to success.

I have a love affair with the past— there is no better teacher. When I learn and apply the lessons that the past teaches, I’m better for it and so are those around me.

I do not eat at the table of self-pity because it would only give me emotional indigestion.

I don’t enjoy insults, but I do appreciate them. Some of them have a lot of truth in them and I would otherwise have been blind to them.

I learned a long time ago that if I were a slave to some of my habits, I would increase my opportunity for living a life of wreck and ruin. I’m talking about the bad ones, of course.

The good ones I try to put a shine on

every day.

I always remember to keep my dreams alive because a person without dreams creates a nightmare of nothingness.

Can I remake the world? Well, yes, in a sense—by remaking me. Just a small portion of the world, but it’s certainly worth the effort.

I always set goals. I learned a long time ago that if you don’t know where you’re going, that is where you will end up.

I know, and try not to forget, that the best argument is the one that never happens.

Tell me what gets you most excited and I will tell you who you are.

The greatest mistake that you can make is to settle for the least that you can be. To spend your lifetime taking the easy way out is to worship at the shrine of pure idiocy.

You may drift toward a worthless life, but to get back to a worthwhile life is a hard climb upward.

If you are satisfied with who you are, you will eventually not be satisfied with what you are.

When you settle on a target to aim at, don’t aim at the bull’s-eye. Aim at the center of the bull’s-eye.

One of the secrets to happiness is realizing that we will never live long enough to become what we know we should—but yes, we should die trying.

I know this: I’m not what I was yesterday and I hope I did not waste the opportunity to improve.

Mother and daughter build bonds hiking Colorado Trail

By Melanie Wiseman “She’s quite a lady,” Sarah Eller said, referring to her mother Jane. “I learned a lot about myself as I was watching her.”

Mother-daughter duo Jane Eller, 67, and Sarah, 33, backpacked 100 miles of the Colorado Trail this past August.

Stretching nearly 500 miles from Denver to Durango, the Colorado Trail travels through the spectacular Colorado Rocky Mountains among peaks, lakes, creeks and diverse ecosystems.

From start to finish, trail users experience six wilderness areas and eight mountain ranges topping out at 13,271 feet. The average elevation is over 10,000 feet with dramatic rises and descents.

Jane and Sarah are now part of an elite group of backpackers who have described the Colorado Trail as an amazing and life-changing experience. They found the trek so inspiring and rewarding that it’s likely they will hike more sections of the trail together in the future.

The Bucket List At 5 foot, 3 inches and 120 pounds, you might not take Jane for the high mountain adventuresome type. But don’t let her size fool you.

“My mom expressed an interest in

creating a bucket list of some things she wanted to do,” Sarah said. “First on the list was ziplining.

So I set up a ziplining adventure near Winter Park that we did last summer with some of my sisters.”

Next on the list was backpacking a lengthy section of the Colorado Trail, which came together much sooner than either originally thought it would.

“You have to seize the day, and seize the moment,” Sarah said. “Her father is 92 and was in the hospital twice this year. That in particular solidified the hike in August because you just never know what’s going to happen next year.”

Sarah assured her mom that she could make this trek happen, and Jane said, “Let’s do 100 miles.”

“That number really captured her attention,” Sarah said. “It was a number that was impressive and worthwhile, and had meaning to her from a Peter, Paul and Mary song.”

Home responsibilities and property upkeep, boarded horses, a sick dog and litter, and a severed rotator cuff threatened to hold Jane back, but she persevered and everything fell into place.

“The doctor said she could do anything she could tolerate, and she has a really high pain tolerance, so she decided to go for it,” Sarah said.

“I’m really proud of her for overcoming those obstacles.

I didn’t push. It was she who overcame it.”

Pre-trip “feet time” Sarah is no mountaineering rookie.

“I couldn’t have had a better person to help me accomplish this 100 miles,” Jane said.

In 2005, Sarah hiked the entire Colorado Trail, and is close to 4,000 total backpacking miles since 2004. These miles include the 2,600-mile Pacific Crest Trail and three years of guiding people up fourteeners at a leadership camp.

“My mom and I have been on a few other three-day backpacking trips together, but nothing of this length,” Sarah said.

Gaining as much “feet time” as possible was crucial preparation for their journey. Jane walked her dogs a couple of miles each day and did more challenging hikes on the weekends.

“I started carrying my pack and kept adding more and more books to make it heavier,” Jane said. “We were going to be on our feet a lot, so in preparation, you have to spend as much time on your feet as possible.”

Jane’s drive to stay fit is enhanced by her love of the outdoors and by being an active swim coach and teacher for 20 years.

Their itinerary involved leaving one car in Leadville, dropping a supply replenishment bucket at a Frisco hotel and shuttling to the starting point.

“It’s so important to have good equipment,” Jane said. “I had great padding on my pack so I didn’t get sore, and I never got any blisters on my feet.”

Sarah dehydrated all the meals for their trip, keeping high calories and weight in mind.

“You can count on about two pounds of food per person, per day,” Sarah said. “Or if by calories, 4,000 per day, if possible. A rule I’ve learned is that you want to pack food that is 100 calories per ounce of weight to give you the most bang for your buck.”

Each pack weighed 30-32 pounds at it’s heaviest.

Planning for two “My husband wanted to go,” Sarah said. “But I said no—this is something my mom and I want to do together.”

“I chose this section because of the aspen and high panoramic views, which give you a great sense of accomplishment and beauty.”

“She taught me how to pack and so many other things,” Jane said. “When she was little, I taught her, and now she’s teaching me.”

The journey Hiking 12-17 miles a day, Jane and Sarah traveled 100 miles in eight days with an overnighter in Frisco sandwiched in the middle.

“I was pretty tense at first, and I fell a number of times, and got pretty banged up,” Jane said. “I just kept putting one foot in front of the other and focused on

“I use every resource available and all my senses to navigate,” Thomas said. He uses

“It took a few days for my mom to delve into the reason the trek was so meaningful,” Sarah said. “She discovered one reason was the spiritual pilgrimage, remembering those who came before us. Second, was the mother-daughter experience she specifically wanted to do with me to learn why I spend so much time on the trail and am passionate about the choices I make. This was a chance for us to truly connect, and I cherish our time together.”

Jane brought her hymnbook, learning new songs and singing along the way. “’There’s Sunshine in My Soul Today,’ was my favorite,” Jane said.

Evenings were the most special times for Jane.

“Getting up in the quiet, coolness of night, looking up and seeing all the stars was amazing,” she said. “I was

so grateful for sharing this experience with my daughter.”

Sharing a square or two of raspberry dark chocolate for dessert each evening was also a highlight of the evening.

“From my perspective, at first my mom was dependent on me more as a guide,” Sarah said. “As the hike progressed I saw a real change in her, where there was a desire to take on things she hadn’t done before. I feel there was real growth in her finding her own independence.”

Both women found enrichment in their adventure because their experience and accomplishments relied on just the two of them.

“I feel my greatest contribution to the trip was letting my mom take the lead on the pace of the trip,” Sarah said. “The trip was not about me. It was about us.” ■

Thomas calls The Colorado Trail one of the most challenging trails he has done, because of the altitude and the unsettled, often violent weather—“I can get struck by lightning just like any other hiker,” he said. “I don’t have any storm super-sense.” And then there’s the lingering snow. “Snow is a blind person’s navigational nightmare. You can’t feel the trail.”

He has one constant companion, who he credits for much of his long-distance hiking success—a black Labrador retriever named Tennille. Tennille guides Thomas around boulders, finds trail markers and keeps Thomas true to the trail. “She points out the things that can hurt me,” Thomas said. “She knows how tall I am and warns me about low hanging tree limbs. No other dog has been trained to do this before. She’s one of a kind.”

Christian women connect and inspire

was new to Grand Junction, so she was happy when a woman at her church invited her to a Christian Women’s Network luncheon.

“I was drawn in by their ministry and the fun of connecting with other women,” she said. “I have since invited my mom and a cousin to participate, too.”

“Some people shy away from church,” Firestone said. “But here women can feel comfortable coming to a luncheon and being inspired.”

The Grand Junction Christian Women’s Network meets for lunch from noon to 1:30 p.m. on the second Thursday of each month at the Clarion Inn on Horizon Drive.

The meetings are accompanied by music and a special presentation by the main speaker. Past presentation topics and special features have included highlighting local nonprofits, financial outlooks for women, a traveling quilt show and even cowboy poetry. The main speaker shares inspirational personal testimony and a gospel message.

There is no membership fee to participate in the Christian Women’s Network. Free babysitting (or grandchild sitting) is offered on site at every meeting. Cost is $15 per luncheon. Reservations are required, but all are welcome.

Women range in age from their 30s to their 90s, but there are no age restrictions—even Staton’s young daughters look forward to participating when their school schedules allow.

Better health through religion?

By Tait Trussell What are the physical effects of religious faith?

A study tracking 20,000 Americans found that white people who attended church regularly lived an average of seven years longer than their counterparts who didn’t go to church, and churchgoing black people lived an average of 14 years longer.

The relationship between religious faith and health has been analyzed in thousands of studies in recent years, according to Dr. Harold G. Koenig, professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Duke University.

“People who feel their life is part of a larger plan and are guided by their spiritual values have stronger immune systems, lower blood pressure, a lower risk of heart attack and cancer, and heal faster and live longer,” Koenig said.

Although there is no exact or specific means of measuring the degree of faith a person has, research does show that people who attend a place of worship at least four times a month tend to avoid risky behavior or depression.

Koenig adds, “It’s the sense that God has a purpose for humanity... and that each of us has a special role in that divine plan.”

Religion seems to “soothe the body as well as the soul,” according to WebMD. The people most involved in their religious beliefs were 29 percent more likely still to be alive than their nonreligious counterparts, according to a review of 40 scientific studies of the elderly, the health information website said.

Dr. Michael E. McCullough, who conducted the research while at the National Institute for Health Research, said, “Some people believe that religious involvement instills healthy beliefs and behaviors...

They also receive a lot of positive and social support that helps them cope with stress.” McCullough is associate professor of psychology at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. “Religion helps people to develop a coherent set of beliefs about the world that helps them make sense of their stress and suffering,” he said.

More than 90 percent of American adults are affiliated with some formal religion and nearly 96 percent say they believe in God or some universal spirit.

The spiritual studies examined the link between religious involvement and mortality, involving 120,000 people, many of them seniors. Information was collected

Dr. Redford Williams, director of the behavioral medicine research center at Duke University Medical Center at Durham, N.C., and author of the book, “Lifestyles,” said, “At least part of what is going on is social support. The health-advancing effects of social support are well documented.”

Why do older folks who go to religious services seem to live longer and have better health? Is it related to their attendance at churches, temples or synagogues, where they have increased contact with people with similar interests?

It’s not simply “finding religion” late in life as the end seems closer.

Instead, it may be that being involved in religious activities

makes seniors feel better emotionally, helping them live longer and in better health.

“There’s increasing interest in the subject among researchers and the public,” according to Susan H. McFadden, PhD, at the University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh. She is co-chair of the religion and aging interest group of the Gerontological Society on Aging (GSA), a national organization of researchers on aging.

Even people who don’t think of themselves as particularly religious can benefit from the findings of research into this area of spirituality and aging, according to Dr. Harry R. Moody, a gerontologist and author of The Five Stages of the Soul.

“The message isn’t: Go back to church and you’ll live a long time,” Moody maintains. Joining a small prayer group unconnected with any church, practicing personal meditation, searching for personal meaning in your life as you age, and forging social connections with friends and family may be what’s important, he suggested. ■

5 ways to be on a charitable budget

f you’ve ever wondered if you can be charitable with only a few extra dollars in your wallet or a little bit of free time, the answer is yes.

You just have to get a little creative.

In the Chronicle of Philanthropy’s latest analysis of charitable giving, it appears that people who earned less were giving more. Based on state-by-state tax data, the nonprofit industry trade publication reported that between 2006 to 2012, Americans earning more than $200,000 gave a smaller percentage of their income to charity, while those earning less than $100,000 actually gave more during the same period.

Wherever you stand on the income scale, stretching charitable dollars or time should begin with a little planning. Here are five steps to consider.

1. Check your finances first. Helping others is a worthwhile lifetime habit. However, before you start writing checks or handing out cash to various individuals or groups, check your budget to determine whether you actually have extra money to spare for charitable donations in any form. If you itemize, check the IRS rules (www.irs.gov) on charitable giving or consult with a qualified tax professional to see if there are charitable giving options that fit your circumstances.

2. Screen charities you’re considering. It’s never been easier to evaluate a potential charity or nonprofit organization. Leading online databases like CharityNavigator. org, CharityWatch.org and Guide star.org provide extensive data on thousands of national, state and local charities and nonprofit organizations. The Better Business Bureau also operates Give.org, a national charity database that accredits and notes complaints. The U.S. Federal

Trade Commission’s Charity Scams website offers breaking news on illegal fundraising activities and best practices for evaluating charities and nonprofits year-round.

3. Research what’s needed. If the charity in question accepts physical items or volunteer work, see if you’re interested in providing help that way. Check with the charity either online or by phone to determine what they will and will not accept—donating the wrong items simply wastes staff and volunteer time. If you would like to volunteer, ask about opportunities and make sure that volunteer assignment fits you before you commit.

4. Ask if your employer will match your donation. Even if your cash donation is modest, some employers can make your contribution go farther if they have a matching gifts program. Check with your human resources department or benefits manager. Also, many nonprofits, universities and charitable organizations keep their own online databases of employer matching-gift programs.

5. Go micro. If you can only find a few dollars to give, don’t let that discourage you. Organize like-minded friends and family members to pool funds, attend events or volunteer time for a cause, or consider a particular nonprofit’s organized crowdfunding (www.councilofnon profits.org/tools-resources/crowd funding-nonprofits) efforts that will allow you to make an impact with only a few dollars. Bottom line: Making a difference in the world doesn’t always require big bucks, but big know-how helps. First check your finances. Then research charities you’re interested in and investigate how small donations of time, money and physical items can make an impact. ■

Protect your money and your identity in tax season IRS helps victims of tax identity theft

T

ax time is rolling up again. That also means that thieves are salivating over the open season when they can file fraudulent tax returns and collect hefty refunds, possibly using your Social Security number (SSN). This isn’t new, but it is a growing problem that reaches to all corners of the country.

Many victims—including my sister—complain that the IRS does little or nothing to help them find out what happened. When someone filed a tax return in my sister’s name and absconded with a large, fraudulent refund, the IRS scolded her. She filed early in the season and expected a quick refund.

Instead she was told she’d already filed and gotten a refund.

She hadn’t, and the IRS wasn’t much help. It took until December for my sister to get her refund. Now each year the IRS sends her a PIN that she must use to file her return safely. Like so many other victims, what she learned was that the IRS would help only if the taxpayer persistently complained. Under fire for their lack of assistance, things seem to be changing.

Help from the IRS has been slow coming, but here’s one step forward: If you are a victim of tax identity theft, you can get copies of fraudulent returns filed in your name and SSN (if you are the pri-

mary or secondary taxpayer on the return, but not to dependents, and not for business returns).

Instructions on how to request a copy of a fraudulent return can be found at www.irs.gov/Individuals/ Instructions-for-Requesting-Copy-of-Fraudulent-Returns.

In a letter, you’ll need to supply: • Your name and SSN • Your mailing address • Tax year(s) of the fraudulent return(s) you are requesting • The following statement, with your signature beneath: “I declare that I am the taxpayer.”

• A copy of a government-issued ID, such as a driver’s license or passport.

Be patient while waiting for a response because the IRS will try to resolve the underlying fraud before providing you with a copy of the fraudulent return. An acknowledgment of your request could take 30 days, and a copy of the return could take up to 90 days.

At this time, you can only request a copy of a fraudulent tax return filed using Forms 1040, 1040A, 1040EZ, 1040NR, or 1040NR-EZ. Also, the address you list in your request must match the address of record you have on file with the IRS. If you’ve recently moved, the IRS advises you to file a Form 8822, Change of Address before requesting a copy of a fraudulent return. ■

Play us a song, harmonica man

A

sunny, sweaty day of baseball could have drifted into hazy memories for a 9-year-old boy named Bud. Instead, it turned into a day he’ll never forget.

As Bud and his brothers swung bats and ran bases behind their family’s barn, something shiny in the dirt caught Bud’s eye. He scooped it up, shook it off and grinned.

Whoa, a harmonica. Baseball would need to wait for a minute.

He blew off more dirt from the harmonica, and then blew into it, eager to make a little music. Bud had never played a harmonica before, but that didn’t matter. “It just felt natural,” he said. “Within a few weeks, I had it down.”

That boy—Owen ‘Bud’ Asbury— is now 87 years old. “From that day on, I never stopped playing the harmonica,” he said. “And the older I got, the more I played.”

He’s 87? Seriously? You’d never know it from his bright eyes and bubbling energy. Bud heartily agrees with people who accuse him of being decades younger. “I sure don’t feel old!” he laughed.

His child-

hood was filled with all kinds of music. Among eight sisters, six brothers and two parents, they played everything from guitars to accordions.

Bud’s life took root in Wyoming, eventually growing into Arkansas and then Colorado. “I’m a country boy,” he said. “I grew up as a cowboy. Always was, always will be.” He proudly pointed to a photo taken of him several years ago at a Palisade Peach Festival. There’s Bud, showing his true colors—black cowboy hat, embroidered black shirt, handcrafted belt buckle—and playing his harmonica.

Through the years, Bud has gathered a collection of 14 harmonicas, nestled securely in a latched metal box. Most of Bud’s harmonicas are Hohners. “Roy Hohner invented the first harmonica,” Bud explained.

“These are well-made instruments.”

He particularly treasures one that

is more than a century old. “I take good care of this one,” he said, wrapping it gently and meticulously.

“Now I’ll play you a song!” he chirped. Popping open a small blue case, he revealed another well-loved harmonica, raised it to his mouth and dove into an impressive rendition of “On Top of Old Smokey.”

Bud’s passion for this instrument is contagious. As he finished the song, he flashed a sunburst smile.

Grand Ole Opry Another unforgettable day for Bud came in 1968. If you’re a fan of country music legends, you know the name Porter Wagoner. That’s the man who asked Bud to perform with a band in the Grand Ole Opry.

“It was amazing,” he says. Bud glows when he remembers Wagoner telling him, “That’s the best harmonica playing I’ve ever heard!”

At another Grand Ole Opry event, Bud was overjoyed to meet one of his country music/comedy idols.

“Minnie Pearl!” he gushes. “I got to meet her and hear some of her great jokes. She was so FUNNY!” He can’t wait to share one of Minnie’s jokes: A woman had three sets of twins. Their names? Pete and Repeat. Joy and Rejoice. Grace and Disgrace.

Memories and laughs

Nothing pleases Bud more than being asked to play his harmonica.

“Since the Grand Ole Opry, I’ve played at events in Aspen and Basalt. I’ve played at ta lot of Festivals.

And I play right here in the Palisade Living Center.”

“Sometimes people stop me on the street and ask me to play something,” he said. “One day a guy told me that he never liked harmonica music—until he heard me play.”

Bud also loves remembering his little Chihuahua (named Mickey because she looked like Mickey Mouse). Mickey spent her 14 years of life as Bud’s sweet sidekick.

When Bud would pick up his harmonica and begin playing, Mickey would stand on her hind legs and croon along with him.

Not surprisingly, he knows countless songs. Bud figures he can play “more than a hundred” on his harmonica. His favorites include “Tennessee Waltz,” “On Top of Old Smokey,” “Goodnight Irene,” “Way Down Upon the Suwanee River,” “Mockingbird Hill,” and the list goes on.

So do the jokes. Bud can’t get enough of them. Here’s one of many jokes he loves to tell: What did the rug say to the floor? “Don’t worry. I’ve got you covered.”

For Bud, any day with music and laughter is a good day. From the Wyoming baseball field to the Grand Ole Opry to Colorado, Bud has shared his magic with lots of lucky audiences.

Now he plays every Sunday at 1:30 pm in the Palisade Living Center. That’s his home and his concert venue. So if you’re not busy on a Sunday afternoon, head over to Palisade and bask in Bud’s famous harmonica tunes. You’ll hear some great music—and a joke or two, no doubt. ■

Reading outside the box Being part of a book club challenges you to go outside the box of your comfort zone and favorite genre, to try different books and authors you might not otherwise have chosen by yourself. “I appreciate the exposure to books I may not have heard of and the chance to read a variety of books I may not have read otherwise,” said Kathy Andersen, 69. Many people may not realize how much they might enjoy books other than their favorite genre, until encouraged by members of a reading group. “We’ve read some books that I never would have picked off the shelf, but I’m extremely glad I did,” said Carole Johnson, 64. “I’m enjoying learning about other cultures.”

“I had really poor history teachers in school and I’ve learned more history from book club historical fiction books than I ever did growing up,” said Marje Bacheldor, 81. Each new book is a chance to learn more about yourself and society at large.

“The most exciting thing to me is getting different perspectives of the book we just read,” said Stephanie Tartaglia, 70. “Other people bring up things I may not have thought of or a view I may not have seen.”

Each reader has different ideas and interpretations about books and discussing them leads to greater understanding.

Communication skills For those who shy away from public speaking, book clubs are great for practicing self-expression, communication and listening skills, sharing your opinions, and having the ability to discuss and disagree without resorting to emotional arguments. You are taught the extremely valuable skill of being honest yet tactful. Because of their understood safety, many people have book clubs to thank for helping them get over the anxiety of public speaking, and improving their comfort level in leading discussions.

Friendship and socialization We all thrive on friendships, especially as we get older. Book clubs are a great excuse to make friends and lifetime connections. Some suggest that the trick is not to join a book club full of your best friends, but instead to find an interesting mix of people, backgrounds and cultures. You are likely to learn more from drawing upon a wider range of individuals. In addition to gaining distinct perspectives on the book at hand, you can also gain a window into their lives, which are very different from your own. “I’ve belonged to a book club wherever we’ve lived,” said Mandy Whitaker, 37. “In one, there were women from six different countries.” Book clubs are a great way to appreciate and learn about other cultures, not only through the books themselves, but also by talking with members from different backgrounds. As a break from everyday life, a book club is an escape and a journey with friends, a safe place to exchange and challenge ideas, helping you grow and offering the freedom to be open and honest. Occasionally the food may even coordinate with the culture of the book being discussed. “I really enjoy the fellowship,” said Barb Hill. “It’s fun to get together once a month, to get to know everyone better and to share some good food.”

Mesa County Library Book Clubs Mesa County Librarian, Ike Rakiecki, said the four book clubs offered through the Mesa County Library system always welcome new people. They read both fiction and non fiction, and the book selections are voted on by the group.

“It’s fun to be part of a diverse group that offers a real sense of community,” said Rakiecki, who leads the Beyond Words Book Club.

“It’s a great way to talk about life experiences of different generations and cultures with people from different parts of the United States and various countries.”

Mesa County Librarian, Jennifer Murrell, co-leads the Kiva Book Club, which has met for decades.

“Belonging to a book club has broadened my reading choices. I belong to both a library book club and a personal one and have met some interesting people from a variety of backgrounds,” said Murrell.

“I am constantly amazed at the insights people share. It’s wonderful to be able to share opinions with no fear of being judged, yet not having to agree with one another!”

Free genetic testing

Someone who claims to be from a reputable company or nonprofit organization visits senior housing facilities, community centers or health fairs and, along with free ice cream, offers free DNA testing. He says that Medicare is paying for these tests because it saves Medicare money by allowing doctors to tailor drugs and treatments to the individual. Technicians swab the seniors’ cheeks, and then the seniors provide their Medicare numbers and sign a piece of paper.

It’s quick, painless, and sounds like a great way to use scientific testing to get ‘personalized medical treatment.’ Even better, it’s free because Medicare is paying for it.

Medicare covers genetic tests only if there are already signs or personal history of disease, and a physician must order the test. Medicare does not cover it as part of a group screening.

Scams like this have turned up in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, California, New York and Texas, and will likely be in Colorado soon. The people who show up at the senior

centers and health fairs are often recruiters, hired by testing labs to lure seniors. The labs often contract with doctors who get kickbacks for signing off on the DNA tests so that Medicare will pay the bills.

It’s costing Medicare millions of dollars in unnecessary testing, while putting clients at risk because they have given out their Medicare numbers and other personal information.

Be wary of “free services.” Whether it’s DNA testing or other medical services or equipment, if it’s free, it should be a red flag.

Do not provide your Medicare number or other personal information.

Report it. Get as much detail as you can about the company name and phone number and report it to Colorado Senior Medicare Patrol at 1-800-503-5190. They will help answer your questions, and investigate the case. Their services are free and confidential.

Check your Medicare Summary Notice and Medicare bills. See if you or Medicare were charged with services you did not order or did not receive. If you receive something you did not order, you have no obligation to accept or pay for it.

Colorado Assisted Living Association announces award winners Every year the Colorado Assisted Living Association recognizes the most outstanding caregivers and administrators. Gray Gourmet offers new lunch venue in Palisade

G

ray Gourmet, Mesa County’s senior nutrition program, announces the opening of a new lunch location for seniors in Palisade. Opening day for the new location will be Tuesday, January 26, 2016.

The weekly lunch program will be held on Tuesdays at the Palisade Community Center, 120 W. 8th Street. Doors open at 11 a.m., with lunch served at Noon. The suggested donation for the hot lunch is $3.50 for seniors 60 and older.

Guests under 60 are welcome at the full price of $7.75 for lunch. Reservations are required by calling the office at least one day in advance, at 243-9844 ext. 1.

The opening day celebration on January 26 will include lunch and entertainment by Bobby Clement, a country gospel singer. Guests

will also be treated to door prizes and cake.

“Our luncheon programs provide essential social gatherings and a regular meeting place for seniors,” said Marsha Kosteva, program manager. “While the main focus is our hot and healthy lunch, the chance to meet friends and share experiences is core to the program.”

Established in 1974, Gray Gourmet prepares and serves nearly 500 meals each weekday from a central kitchen on Chipeta Avenue in Grand Junction. The program offers meals on wheels service to nearly 300 homebound seniors a day. Gray Gourmet sponsors nine dining site locations where more active seniors gather daily for a hot lunch and “bottomless” coffee. The program has been sponsored by St. Mary’s Hospital since 1989. ■

Congratulations to Tillie Bishop, Champion of the Arts

T

he Grand Junction Commission on Arts and Culture announced last month that Tilman “Tillie” Bishop was the recipient of the 2015 Champion of the Arts Award.

Since 2007, Tillie has served as Chairman of the Legends of the Grand Valley committee. In that time, the committee has commissioned and installed a total of eight significant, larger-than-life sculptures in downtown Grand Junction, with a ninth and final piece to be installed in April of 2016. Together these public art pieces tell many important stories of our community and serve to entertain, educate, and enlighten visitors, as well as residents, about the history of our valley.

Most people in the community are aware of Tillie’s community contributions as a Colorado State Senator, a County Commissioner

and as an educator at Mesa State College, now Colorado Mesa University. Senator Bishop was very much involved in pushing to create the 1% for the Arts legislation, which has done much to further the arts as a vital part of our environment.

A public reception to honor Tillie will be held on January 20, 2016 at 6 p.m. at Grand Junction City Hall, 250 North 5th Street. The award presentation will take place at 7 p.m.

The Arts Commission is an 11-member board appointed by City Council to create a climate where arts and culture can thrive and grow in the Grand Valley. Annually in October, the Arts Commission seeks nominations from the community for this special recognition.

Truth be told, I’d say you’re as much deserving of a statue as any of the people immortalized by the Legends Project. But I understand that one needs to be “dead” to be considered for a bronze bust and quite frankly I’d rather have you here with us. I think Pat would agree.

 We love the BEACON and Fred shares his several times, even when a couple of months late. So well worth the $19 (subscription fee) even if it says, “free!”

 There’s a cold wind blowing in the desert north of Clifton and it seems to have blown in a lot of trash and some riffraff along with it. Many years I’ve lived here and had always assumed that ground beneath Mount Garfield was owned by the government. Now I see a few rundown houses, plenty of junk cars and the loads of trash. What can be done?

PBM Greed Sickens Patients PARTING and Drives Up Health Costs

D

onald Trump, Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders all think that health care is too expensive. But they’re looking in the wrong places for savings. In 2012, the CEO of the nation’s largest pharmacy benefit manager, Express Scripts, earned about $1 million every week.

Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBMs) can afford such rich compensation because they increasingly refuse to pay for patients’ medicines. In 2016, Express Scripts will deny coverage to 124 medicines—up from 95 drugs this year.

America’s second largest PBM, CVS Caremark, announced that it will banish an additional 14 drugs from its 2016 list of covered medications, in addition to the 66 forbidden medicines in 2015.

By refusing to cover specialized drugs, Express Scripts and CVS Caremark aren’t just denying patients access to lifesaving medication. They’re also driving up healthcare costs for patients.

PBMs design and maintain drug formularies – the lists of medications available under particular health plans. Their influence is massive because PBM-administered plans cover more than 210 million Americans insured through employers, unions, or government programs like Medicare Part D. PBMs can play a valuable role as middlemen in the health care system. They streamline the drug purchasing process by supplying thousands of pharmacies and insurers with prescription contracts.

They also hold health care spending in check by using their immense purchasing power to negotiate large discounts from pharmaceutical manufacturers. Their profit comes from pocketing any rebates they

extract from drug makers that they don’t pass on to pharmacies and insurers.

However, the largest PBMs—particularly Express Scripts and CVS Caremark—increasingly abuse their role and pad their bottom lines by simply refusing to cover certain lifesaving drugs.

CVS Caremark, for example, recently took to the Journal of the American Medical Association to promote the use of cheaper statin medications rather than specialized new drugs that can cut “bad” LDL cholesterol levels in half. Doctors have called the new medicines a “game-changer” in the fight against coronary artery disease.

Last year, pharmacies sued Express Scripts over its “scheme to deny all claims” for certain customized medications. “The scheme is forcing patients to go without treatment,” the suit stated, “jeopardizing their health and causing bodily harm, or forcing them to pay out-of-pocket sums that they may or may not be able to afford for basic healthcare needs that have been prescribed by their doctors.”

Without medicine, many patients grow sicker and require more expensive care in hospitals and nursing homes.

Prescriptions are almost always the most cost-effective treatment option. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that a 1 percent increase in prescription use by Medicare beneficiaries causes Medicare’s total medical spending to fall by about one-fifth of 1 percent.

So in effect, PBMs are passing the buck to insurers and government health care programs, which are on the hook for pricier treatment regimes. ■
