I’ve met 80-year-olds who look like they’re 60, 50-year-olds who act 70, and everything in between. Who would have guessed that Mick Jagger and Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones would still be alive, let alone still on tour?

(They’re probably more surprised than anyone.)

As you age your abilities and attitudes toward aging change as well. Growing up I used to think my parents were ancient. Now I still find myself acting like a teenager.

Medicare primer 101

I

f your 65th birthday is around the corner or you’re anxious about the Medicare open enrollment period, it’s a good time to start focusing on your options.

What is Medicare? Medicare is a government-provided health and hospitalization insurance program for people 65 and older and for some people under age 65, based on disability or particular forms of illness.

What does it cost? Though you’ve likely paid taxes into

• Part C (Medicare Advantage) Call this one-stop shopping for your hospital, outpatient (Part A and B) and usually your prescription coverage (see Part D below).

Medicare Advantage policies are sold by private insurers. Medicare pays their share and you pay your premium. They may include differing assortments of services, including vision, prescription drug, dental or hearing.

But keep in mind different Medicare Advantage plans have different rules for services and can charge different out-of-network costs.

WHAT DOES COVERAGE LOOK LIKE?

As of late 2014, here’s an overview of current Medicare plans: • Parts A (Hospital) and B (Outpatient) Part A covers inpatient hospital care and Part B covers outpatient medical care and procedures. You’ll hear Parts A and B referred to as “Original Medicare” because if you choose to take this option, you’ll sign up for them as a pair. You’ll get to go to any doctor, hospital or facility that’s enrolled in Medicare and accepting new Medicare patients. You’ll end up paying a premium for Part B, which can change from year to year while Part A is usually free.

What if you plan to keep working with company health benefits after you turn 65? Confer with your financial advisor and Medicare before you make any decisions, but you may qualify for a special enrollment period. People who continue to work past 65 may enroll in Part A but bypass Part B and D if they’re on a company plan.

Are your doctors on the plan? You’ve probably had some experience with this, but continue to check to see whether your physicians are in-network on Medicare Advantage.

What can your state do for you? If you find you’re not getting answers on specific Medicare subjects from Medicare itself, then contact SHIP (State Health Insurance Assistance Program). SHIP offers one-onone counseling on Medicare. To contact the Mesa County SHIP office, call 243-9839.

A simple way of giving: Giving Clubs make a big difference in Mesa County

E

xciting news is out on the street. Men and women from all walks of life in Mesa County are giving away lots of money.

Thousands of dollars are going to local nonprofits from two philanthropic and networking groups: the women’sonly Giving Club and the Guys’ Giving Club.

It all started when long-time leader in the nonprofit community Illene Roggensack lit the fire behind the women’s group in 2014.

“The Giving Club is modeled after something that many communities around the country have called 100 Women Who Care. It’s a great idea and easy enough to put together,” Roggensack said. “I got a hold of seven other women in town whom I know can make things happen and we were off and running.”

The Giving Club members meet on a Monday evening once each quarter and enjoy networking, food and beverages at the SpringHill Suites, 236 Main St. in Grand Junction. The highlight of the evening is when members nominate local nonprofits to potentially receive that meeting’s total pledges.

The premise is simple. Each member bring $100 to each meeting to pledge towards the night’s total donation pot, which is later donated to a local nonprofit organization with no strings attached. Members nominates an organization, three names are randomly drawn, and each organization’s respective nominator gives an enthusiastic endorsement. Members vote and one charitable group is given the donation pot.

As of late 2015, the women’s group had approximately 155 members, which means one organization could potentially receive $15,500.

The passion and rapid growth that followed the Giving Club’s inaugural meeting left men in the valley enamored with the idea and wanting to know how they could lend their support.

The Guys’ Giving Club held its first meeting in August 2015 with 28 members present. Now the guys’ club has about 45 members to date.

“We want to emulate the success of the women,” Guys’ Giving Club member Todd Young said.

The Giving Club has presented local nonprofits with more than $60,000. In their short time, the Guys’ Giving Club has given $7,200 to two organizations.

“It’s organized random acts of kindness,” Jacque Chappell-Reid said about the clubs. “It’s simple and fast.

One hundred percent of the pledges go to a nonprofit.”

Of course, more club members equates to larger donations and both clubs are seeking new members. An annual $100 hospitality fee covers food and beverages.

“This is great for smaller organizations without the staff to write grants and plan fundraising events,” Sharon Currie-Mills said.

Fred Jones said the Guys’ Giving Club is great for people who want to get involved in the community but have limited time.

“I like the ease of the whole thing and being able to nominate nonprofits close to your heart,” Jones said.

Both clubs meet quarterly from 5:15 p.m.-7 p.m. at the SpringHill Suites in downtown Grand Junction. The Giving Club meets on Mondays while the Guys’ Giving Club meets the next day—on Tuesdays.

“In my opinion, the (Guys’) Giving Club gives everyone the opportunity to give just a little, knowing that combined with others it makes a big impact,” Young said.

“I believe most everyone in the Grand Valley can afford to help us make a difference.”

All quarterly pledges are tax deductible.

“It’s a great opportunity to meet new people while doing something worthwhile in giving a gift,” Roggensack said. “It’s very much aligned with the trends we’re seeing today in Americans’ charitable giving. As someone who works with a lot of nonprofit organizations, I can tell you that this appeals to me personally because it doesn’t require the selected organization to jump through a lot of hoops to get a very substantial donation.”

Home repair and improvement scammers target the elderly

I

t begins with a knock on your door. The details vary, but according to warnings from the police, it goes something like this. You open the door and find a young man dressed like a laborer.

“I was just doing a home repair job up the street,” he tells you. “I noticed your rain gutters are dangerously full.

It looks like you’ve got some real trouble brewing there.

The gutter problem might’ve even caused roof damage.

I’m on my way home but I can clean those gutters for you right now if you want. While I’m up there, I can take a look at your roof.”

The damage he mentions may or may not be real. But if he manages to alarm you, you may see this as a quick and affordable way to fix a problem before disaster strikes.

Often the con artist acts like he wants to do you a favor and is willing to give you a great price.

Beware because this has the earmarks of a home repair/ improvement scam. Chances are, the “deal” is not so good, and the price is much higher than the job is worth but he’s counting on you not to know that. Also, the work that he describes as urgent may never get done or the work may be shoddy, and he may have little or no experience in home repair.

And this might only be the beginning. Ninety-eight-yearold Billy Smiley answered the door and found a likable man there, who offered to clean his gutters and check his roof. Smiley agreed, and paid the man $3,000 (far more than the job was worth). Soon the repairman came back, looking concerned.

“Now that I’ve been up on the roof and taken a closer look, this is a much bigger job than I thought,” he said.

Smiley agreed to more work for more money. Actually, while an accomplice did the job, the repairman came in and kept the lonely senior company. Somehow he got a look at Smiley’s bank statements and decided that he could afford to lose a lot more money. An afternoon’s work turned into a 15-day job with a $76,000 price tag.

Why did he let it escalate? At first, they won his trust.

Then he was in too deep.

“I had to rely on their honesty,” he said. “And once I got into it, it was one of those deals where you can’t just walk away from it. They had my roof torn off, and the weather was bad. I needed them to get it fixed.”

But they didn’t. When Smiley caught on to the scam, he stopped paying, and the men left. Smiley had to hire

someone else to fix his roof, which may not have even been damaged in the first place.

“I have no one to blame but myself,” Smiley said.

“It’s one of those things I’ve criticized others for doing— for not investigating guys like that before doing business with them.”

He warned people to use legitimate contractors and not to trust someone who just knocks on your door. If someone claims to be a licensed contractor, ask to see his/her contractor’s license and proof that they are adequately insured.

It’s nothing new. According to authorities, the home repair scam is everywhere. Often, it targets the elderly, especially after a storm or other disaster when damage is apparent and homeowners are likely to feel desperate. Here are some of the warning signs to watch for, so you can avoid a home repair/improvement scam: • The repairman comes to your door to solicit work.

• He may say he has materials left over from another job and can therefore offer you a discount.

• He makes the job seem urgent, pressuring you to make a quick decision.

• He talks fast, uses terms that may be confusing, and does not stop to explain when you ask questions.

• He does not offer references that you can check.

• He may drive a vehicle without a business name painted on it. Conversely, there may be a name on the vehicle, but it is a removable magnetic sign. His vehicle may have out-of-state plates.

• He may resist giving you a written contract but expects you to trust him. Or he may pressure you to sign a written contract immediately, without time to consider the job or to check out his credentials.

• The only contact he offers has a post office box for an address and a cell phone number.

• If permits are required, he may ask you to get them, which is a sign he is unlicensed.

• He wants payment up front before the work begins.

He may tell you the money is required for materials.

What if you suspect you have been victimized?

If you believe you have been a victim of a home repair/ improvement scam, it’s important to contact an attorney immediately. There are time deadlines to pursue some legal claims, and to cancel sales contracts. You can also contact your state attorney general or your county district attorney.

New methods to pay for home care

F

amilies need to understand their options when it comes to paying for senior care. But first, it’s important to understand the level of care you need. Senior care can range from a couple of hours a week to 24-hour skilled nursing care.

You may think that Medicare is the only option for long-term care, but Medicare only covers nursing and clinical care for acute conditions, usually following a stay in a hospital or rehabilitation, or skilled nursing facility.

Rates vary on how much care will cost. Generally 24hour care in a nursing home will be much more expensive than private in-home care. However, those rates also vary depending on how many hours a caregiver’s services are needed.

Your family has many options to assist you in paying for long-term care. In addition to Medicare, there are Medicaid, Veterans Administration benefits, long-term care insurance and money from savings and other assets.

Medicaid - This program covers a limited amount of longterm, in-home care for those who qualify. Medicaid will only pay for in-home care if provided by a Medicaid-certified home care agency, not by an independent, paid caregiver or family member. You can also contact the Area Agency on Aging in Mesa County at 248-2717, and Region 10 in Delta and Montrose at 249-2436.

PACE - The relatively new Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) provides comprehensive home and community care for frail elders who would otherwise re-

quire nursing home care. PACE is only available in certain areas and eligibility is restricted to low-income seniors, usually those eligible for both Medicare and Medicaid.

Veterans benefits - Veterans and the surviving spouses of veterans may be eligible for some in-home care assistance from the Department of Veterans Affairs, either through health benefits offered to veterans or in the form of a monthly cash benefit. If your loved one is housebound, these benefits may be even higher.

Long-term care insurance - If your loved one has a longterm care insurance policy, it may include coverage for in-home care.

Life insurance policy - Some home care agencies can help families convert their life insurance policy into cash to help pay for in-home care, even a term life insurance policy.

Personal and family assets - There are several ways personal and family assets can be used to help pay for in-home care, including tapping into the equity in your loved one’s home and gathering contributions from those family members who aren’t actively helping with daily care.

Reverse mortgage - This is a special type of home equity loan that allows you to receive cash against the value of your home without selling it. For most reverse mortgages you can choose to receive a lump sum payment, a monthly payment, or a line of credit. You continue to live in your home and you retain title and ownership of it. However, you do not have to repay the loan as long as you continue to live in the home. Instead, the amount you owe, based on loan payouts and interest on the loan, becomes due when you or the last borrower, usually the last remaining spouse, dies, sells or permanently moves out of the home.

Uranium workers’ benefits - If you or a family member incurred a lung illness, kidney cancer or fibrosis silicosis within the last 60 years (even if the family member is deceased) and they worked as a uranium miner or uranium miller, worked at a processing plant, or transported uranium between 1942 and 1971, they may qualify for $150,000 to $275,000 tax free. This compensation can include in-home care.

When housing needs change, what are your options?

hether you’re considering new housing for an elderly relative or thinking ahead to your own needs, the task of choosing the right place can be overwhelming.

On the other hand, the choices are so much better than they once were. Instead of waiting until the need is immediate, think over the possibilities while there is time.

Here are some of the most common options:

Independent living communities People who are able to live on their own and don’t have specific medical care needs may be best served by an independent retirement community. For the most part these communities appear no different than most neighborhoods, except they generally have age restrictions, such as 55 and up, and possibly enhanced security.

A retirement community could consist of individual homes, mobile homes, townhouses or condos. Some communities are set up for renters and others for home ownership. This type of arrangement brings resources together so seniors can live independently, but if they want or need additional services, such as help with housekeeping, laundry, group meals or prepared meals, transportation, security, and social and cultural activities, they are readily available.

Assisted living facilities You’ve probably seen assisted living facilities, which seem to be springing up everywhere. They provide some medical care for those who need a little more, but still allow residents to feel independent. These residences generally have the ability to help with managing prescriptions, and well as bathing, dressing and grooming if needed. They may provide or arrange for transportation, and assist those who need help with personal mobility.

Some assisted living arrangements are like small, private apartments, with health care personnel on the premises at all times, or at least on call.

In most facilities you can opt for other services, for an additional fee, such as housekeeping help, personal laundry service, Alzheimer’s care, etc.

Nursing homes Nursing homes are available for those who require round-the-clock care but don’t need to be in a hospital.

In the recent past, many of these homes were known as

rigid, rule bound, and driven by tight schedules. Over time they have become more focused on the needs of the residents, so residents can begin to feel at home. Some nursing homes are developed to be like small households, where a group of people lives under one roof, shares meals and engages in activities together.

Is the facility stable for the long term?

When looking at your options, you’ll need to be armed with specific questions. The first area of concern should be the stability of the facility. You can start by contacting your state’s office on aging. Here are some questions to ask: • Is the facility experiencing legal or financial problems?

• Are there pending lawsuits or state inspection issues against the facility?

• Is it able to maintain an adequate and qualified staff?

• Does it have current state and local licenses?

• Does it have adequate liability and malpractice insurance?

Also ask your physician, nurses and other health care professionals, hospital discharge planners and social workers. The reputation of a housing facility for seniors and the disabled gets around fast among those who deal with the elderly, so don’t hesitate to ask.

Once you know a facility is sound, get more personal.

Visit the place at least twice, during different hours and days of the week to see for yourself what the quality of life is for residents. Talking to the staff can reveal a lot about how they feel about residents and can give insight into how you or your loved ones will be cared for.

Seniorliving.org suggests when you visit a facility, have these questions in mind.

• Is the staff respectful and friendly?

• Is the nursing home clean?

• Do they offer social, recreational, religious and cultural activities that interest you or your elderly relative?

• Can you choose your waking, bedtime and bathing time?

• Can you get food and drinks anytime?

Is the food good? Ask to try it.

• Can you have visitors anytime?

• Can you have a pet?

• Is transportation provided?

• How much privacy is there?

• Can you decorate your room how you like?

• Is the temperature comfortable?

• Is there good natural lighting?

• Do you have a telephone and TV in the room?

Understanding hospice care

I

was at the medical center near my home when the administrator of my mother’s board and care introduced the word “hospice” to me. In her gentle way, she was getting me acquainted with the term. I had heard the word before. It was used for situations that wouldn’t have a positive outcome. Just hearing her say it made me afraid.

She and I were in the doctor’s office with my mom. For 10 years, my mother had suffered from Alzheimer’s disease and was in the late stages.

That’s when Mom’s doctor told us everything that could be done medically was being done. “The truth is,” the doctor said, gesturing toward my 89-year-old mother, “we are moving in the direction of comfort care.”

Since that meeting I have learned a lot about hospice care. The most important lesson is that having hospice intervention for my mom didn’t mean that I had given up on her. It meant employing a level of care designed to improve her quality of life, even at its end. It meant that I sought optimal physical and emotional comfort for her in a way that minimized her pain. In fact, due in part to the efforts of the hospice care workers during the next 16 months, my mother’s quality of life improved. I believe their care extended her life.

What is hospice?

Hospice dates back to medieval times when travelers, the sick, wounded or dying would seek a place for rest and comfort. Today, hospice offers a comprehensive pro-

gram of care to patients and families facing a lifethreatening illness. Hospice is primarily a concept of care, not a place.

Hospice emphasizes palliative rather than curative treatment—quality rather than quantity of life. Its goal is to relieve and soothe the symptoms of a disease.

Who’s involved?

Hospice care involves teamwork between the caregivers and the family. Working with the patient and their family, a care plan is outlined. Emotional, spiritual and practical support is given based on the patient’s wishes.

The hospice physician, nurses, aides, social workers, clergy and volunteers work together to ease the difficulties and uncertainties of the dying process.

How to decide At any time during a life-limiting illness, it’s appropriate to discuss all of a patient’s care options, including hospice. The requirements to be hospice appropriate include: • The patient must be diagnosed with a terminal illness by a physician.

• The patient is considered to have a life expectancy of six months or less, if the disease runs its normal course.

• The patients must sign a statement acknowledging that they choose hospice treatment over curative treatment.

Understandably, most people are uncomfortable with the idea of stopping aggressive efforts to beat the disease.

Hospice staff members are sensitive to these concerns and are available to discuss them with the patient and family.

Does insurance cover hospice care?

Hospice coverage is widely available. It is provided by Medicare and by most private insurance providers. Check with your health insurance provider. Hospice affirms life and regards dying as a normal process. Its goal is to neither hasten nor postpone death.

Love overcomes grief

S

hirley Quinn and Dave Bailey met for the first time in February 2014 but their love story resonates back to the 1940s in rural Western Colorado. What was a chance encounter through a GriefShare support group has come full circle with this pair of newlyweds eloping and marrying barefoot on a Kauai beach.

Dave was born in Collbran in 1938. After high school, he went to college to pursue different levels of degrees, which he capped off with a doctorate in toxicology from Utah State. His career path led him to New York, Fort Collins and finally Virginia in 1985, where he met and married his wife, Gail.

Prior to Gail’s illness and death in April 2011, the couple had planned to move to Grand Junction because most of Dave’s family remained in the area.

“Throughout the whole time I lived in Virginia, I came back here to hunt,” Dave said. “That was my time of rejuvenation.”

Shirley was raised with her sister and brother in Paonia, just on the other side of Grand Mesa. She attended nursing school in Kansas and finished her degree at Mesa State College. She married Chuck Quinn in 1995. He passed away in May 2011, just one month after Dave lost Gail.

After Gail’s death, Dave joined a GriefShare group in Virginia and continued his visits to Grand Junction. He wasn’t seriously looking for a home here, but when a Realtor showed him a house on Orchard Mesa that would fulfill his hunting lodge needs, he was sold. After that, he traveled between Virginia and Grand Junction every two months.

Missed connections After losing Chuck, Shirley attended the Mending Hearts support group through HopeWest.

“But I needed more,” Shirley said. “I knew I was far from well.”

In the spring of 2013, she took the GriefShare class, a new offering at First Presbyterian Church, which she said gave her permission for validating some of her feelings.

After the grief class, Shirley went on a family “girls’ trip” to Mexico.

“I can remember laughing until I cried,” Shirley said. “I realized I hadn’t laughed for a long time. I could feel myself getting better. And that was right before I met Dave.”

Dave struggled deeply with grief of his own.

“You know they’re going to die so you kind of get ready for it, but you aren’t ready for it. I just collapsed,” Dave said. “One of the hardest things I ever had to do was ask for help from others.”

His doctor and members of his GriefShare group in Virginia lifted Dave up.

In the fall of 2013, Dave took the second GriefShare class that First Presbyterian offered, right after Shirley.

For the three years after losing their spouses, they also attended the same church but different services. Both frequented the coffee hour between services, but never met.

That all changed on February 25, 2014 when the two GriefShare classes had a reunion potluck.

Dave headed to the all-guys table but it was full, so he sat down at an empty one. He soon found himself in the company of seven women, including Shirley who sat directly across from him.

“I’m probably the only person here who rode a horse to school,” Dave said during table talk.

“Actually,” Shirley piped in, “my dad took me to school on horseback sometimes.”

Dave’s one comment and Shirley’s reply spurred a conversation about the similarities in their early years and how close their hometowns were to one another. At the end of the evening, they went their separate ways, although Dave wanted to learn more about this “milkmaid over the mountain.”

The hunt for the milkmaid Like any good hunter, Dave made note of his surroundings—committing the name on Shirley’s nametag to mem-

SUPPORT GROUPS ALCOHOLISM & ADDICTIONS ory. The next day he called the number listed in the church directory and found that her landline was no longer in service. Persistence paid off and after a little legwork he acquired her cell phone number.

“I was at that place where [losing Gail] didn’t hurt as bad,” Dave said. “I had to give myself permission to move on because for a long time I couldn’t think about dating another woman. With help, I was able to look at a picture of Gail with fond memories rather than grief.”

So Dave called Shirley and invited her to dinner.

“I remember telling myself to guard myself from getting involved with anyone until I was ready for another relationship,” Shirley said.

The two talked for hours and neither finished their meals.

“I asked the waitress to let us know before they started charging us rent,” Dave said.

Following cordial goodbyes, they drove their separate ways. Shirley said she hadn’t smiled like that for a long time.

Falling in love The next day, Dave left for Virginia for a month.

Shirley had emailed him, thanking him for the nice evening. Dave called her from the airport and when he arrived in Virginia. They talked for two hours each night in his absence. “It kind of scared us because we talked about everything,” Shirley said. “We were both feeling love toward each other but we didn’t know how deeply. About the third week we said, ‘Who are we kidding?’ and agreed we were really in love.”

Neither knew what to expect when Shirley picked Dave up at the airport.

“She saw me coming and I put my arms around her,” Dave said. “We looked at each other and I kissed her.”

“Falling in love is a lot more fun at our age than when you’re younger,” Shirley said. “You don’t have any inhibitions. It is what it is.”

Believing this relationship was ordained by God, one day in May, Dave got on his knee, ring in hand.

With family and friends scattered, and after reading an AARP article about seniors eloping, they started making secret plans. Family knew something was brewing but had no details of when and where.

“We snuck away in the middle of the night, drove to Denver and flew to Kauai,” Dave said.

The morning after the wedding, family and close friends woke to an emailed photo of a barefoot beach wedding, newlyweds glowing.

The way to a community’s heart is through its volunteers

E

ach year over a million Coloradans donate over 122 million hours of service to worthy causes. The Grand Valley is no slouch when it comes to making a healthy contribution to those numbers.

Rich Parrish, a retired manager from XPEDX, a distributor of packaging, facility and printing supplies, moved to the Grand Valley from Utah in 1979. He currently lives in Fruita with his wife, Val. The couple has seven children and over a dozen grandchildren, making hospitality as integral in their home as their obvious warmth and open-heartedness.

Parrish has a long and varied resume when it comes to volunteering. Over the years he has served on boards of various nonprofit organizations, including United Way, Boy Scouts of America, Crime Stoppers of Mesa County, Western Colorado Horticulture Society, the LDS Church, Fruita Monument High School Boosters, and Family Health West. He has also volunteered at Mesa County Libraries and Community Food Bank. Val pointed out that although Rich is basically retired, he’s definitely made a second career out of volunteering.

“I believe the more active and involved you are, the better you feel about yourself, and that’ll probably make for a longer life,” Parrish said.

He managed to convey his view that volunteering is a responsibility we all share and hopes that future generations will continue to give time and energy to making their community a thriving one. He said there’s a great deal of satisfaction in knowing you are helping a worthy cause and making a difference.

There are so many deserving organizations that need volunteers. It may be hard to choose where to donate your precious time, but don’t let the number of organizations needing help deter you. With a bit of self-assessment and a modicum of research, you can find the perfect match. Narrow your search by asking yourself a few key questions.

What are you passionate about?

List some things you know you are willing to support, or things that you would like to change or improve in your community. This will start you thinking in the right direction. You may decide you want to use your career skills as a volunteer. On the other hand you may want to do something you know little about and learn something new in the process.

Determine if you want to volunteer on a regularly scheduled basis or just occasionally.

Do you want to volunteer your time working alone or with others?

The answers to these questions should narrow your list and assist you in making an informed decision about where, what kind, and how much time you have to offer.

There are a number of nonprofit and service organizations in the Grand Valley that, like Community Food Bank, provide vital services, including Hilltop, Gray Gourmet, HopeWest, Grand Valley Catholic Outreach, Habitat for Humanity, or the American Red Cross, to name a few. Other community organizations include the John McConnell Math and Science Center, The Art Center, Mesa County Public Libraries, or the Western Colorado Botanical Gardens.

Volunteer organizations designed to service veterans, such as Operation Interdependence or The VA Medical Center, almost always need a helping hand. And don’t forget the school district, hospitals, Mesa County Health Department, and the Sheriff’s office; they all have a variety of opportunities for volunteers.

If you’re a senior and are not sure where your particular skills and talents are most needed, you may want to contact Mesa County RSVP, a local nonprofit organization that serves the community by placing seniors who want to volunteer with the organizations that best suit them.

Senior Services and Volunteer Opportunities Senior Companion Program and Foster Grandparent Program Senior Companion volunteers help homebound seniors remain active and independent by providing transportation, companionship, and help with daily activities. Foster Grandparent volunteers provide educational support to at-risk children.

Volunteers 55 and older meeting income and service commitment guidelines earn a tax-free stipend.
