How old would you be if you didn’t know how old you are?

BEACON reader recently asked me, “How old would you be if you didn’t know how old you are?”

I thought about it a moment and answered, “That would depend on which day you asked me.” That was a clever answer, I thought. But the question has lingered with me.

At some point in human history, I suppose there was a time when many people didn’t know exactly how old they were. That’s unlikely in this modern age, where the time is tracked everywhere.

People seem a bit obsessed with knowing exactly where they are in the continuum of life.

What if we were each free to forget our age for a moment? What age would you be?

By writing and publishing the stories of local veterans, we are able to tell the human experience of war.

S VOA aims to break cycle of

homelessness for vets

A

s part of their commitment to providing veterans services, Volunteers of America (VOA) Colorado expanded their services to Western Colorado by opening the Western Slope Field Office last year in Grand Junction. The office, located at 815 N. First St., serves Mesa, Garfield, Montrose, Delta and Pitkin counties, and facilitates the Back Home Supportive Services for Veterans Families (SSVF) Program.

SSVF is a homeless prevention, rapid rehousing and supportive services program funded by the VA, designed to provide emergency assistance to veterans and their families.

According to VOA Colorado’s website, The Department of Veterans Affairs estimated that over 67,000 veterans were homeless and living on the streets on one night in January 2011.

Veterans with one day of active duty with a discharge other than dishonorable, at imminent risk of losing their permanent housing or currently homeless, and earn 50 percent or less of the area’s median income are eligible for the program. Those who qualify will receive assistance to stabilize their housing.

The program provides case management, education support services, emergency financial assistance, housing search assistance, move-in assistance, transportation assistance, referral services and more. For more information, call 644-5220.

hortly after the end of World War I, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11, 1919, as Armistice Day. He told the nation that the thoughts of the American people on that day should “be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service…” In 1945 a delegation of World War II veterans went to Washington hoping to expand the day of remembrance to include all veterans. They succeeded, and in 1954 Congress passed a bill to make Veterans Day a national holiday. There are almost 20,000 veteran families currently residing in Mesa County. Fortunately, there are a number of local organizations whose mission is to improve the plight of many of these veterans, and respectfully honor their service.

You can show your support for America’s veterans by supporting these organizations and their endeavors.

Hear their stories On November 11 the public is invited to meet and honor World War II veterans in a celebration to commemorate the opening of Mesa County Libraries’ new online video collection, “Veterans Remember.”

The celebration, held at Chick-filA in Grand Junction, from 4 p.m.-6 p.m., will feature several local veterans of World War II, whose stories are told in the video series. The series represents the first step in the libraries’ commitment to document a number of unique and vanishing aspects of Mesa County, including the memories, thoughts and experiences of local veterans. Honor the departed The Patriot Guard Riders of the Western Slope and Wreaths Across America are holding their annual sponsorship drive for Christmas wreaths for the graves of veterans.

The wreath ceremony will take place at 10 a.m. on December 13 at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Grand Junction.  Operation Interdependence volunteers pack boxes to send to U.S. troops.

in 1992 at the Worcester Wreath Company when its owner, Morrill Worcester, decided to donate 5,000 wreaths to gravesites at Arlington National Cemetery.

It soon gained national attention in 2005, when a photo of the gravestones adorned with wreaths and covered in snow, was posted on the Internet.

In 2007, the Worcester family, along with veterans and a number of service groups, formed Wreaths Across America, a nonprofit organization, to continue to support other groups, like the one here on the Western Slope. Wreaths are $15 each.

The Grand Valley Combined Honor Guard is a volunteer group of honorably discharged veterans who have been providing military funeral honors for over 10 years in Mesa County.

Jeffery Buchanan, 54, a self-described “younger member,” says that they seem to be getting busier every year.

“We are losing a number of World War II and Korean veterans,” he said.

The group provides two buglers, a seven-rifle salute, commander,

Support veterans and their families The American Legion Riders is a charitable group that works with other service organizations to raise money for children’s hospitals, schools, veterans’ homes and severely wounded veterans. They also sponsor the Legion Legacy Run to support the Legacy Scholarship fund, which provides scholarships to children of U.S. military personnel.

This past year they raised $1 million for the scholarship fund. For more information, or to make a donation to this worthy cause, contact Dallas Hanson at the Veterans’ Art Center at 462-1247. You can find more information on The American Legion Riders at www.legion.org/riders.

It’s also the time for the Vet Center’s annual holiday food drive. By donating nonperishable food items, you will help feed local veterans and their families during the holidays.

The Vet Center provides free readjustment and counseling services to Mesa County and surrounding areas—including Glenwood Springs, Montrose and Moab. It actively services over 100 families. Many of these families are borderline homeless or are homeless, so items that are easy to prepare are most appreciated.

Health and hygiene items, such as toothpaste, soap, shampoo and basic first aid items are also welcome. Donations can be dropped off through December 15 at the Grand Junction Vet Center at 2472 Patterson Road #16. For details, call 245-4156.

The VFW Post #1247 was chartered in Grand Junction in 1924. Its mission is to support veterans in times of need. One of the ways it accomplishes this is through the national

www.BeaconSeniorNews.com Buddy Poppies program. The VFW conducted its first poppy distribution in 1922. The poppies are still assembled by disabled and needy veterans in VA hospitals. This program not only provides assistance for those who assemble the poppies, but the donations received during their distribution helps provide financial assistance in maintaining state and national veterans rehabilitation and service programs. Stop by the VFW, 1404 Ute Ave., view the wall of honor, attend one of their events, meet some lovely people, and don’t forget to make a donation and receive a Buddy Poppy.

Send mementos from home Karon Carley is the national president and Colorado state manager for Operation Interdependence, a nationwide nonprofit organization that provides a means for local communities to support troops. The group ships greeting notes from home with nonperishable treats like gum, snack bars, powdered drink mixes, instant oatmeal, and personal items like razors and shampoo. The local chapter, which is powered solely by caring volunteers, ships 100 or more boxes every month to American military bases around the world, even those in conflict zones.

On November 22, Operation Interdependence will be hosting a craft fair to help raise money for expenses, such as flat rate boxes and postage.

The fair will be held at the VFW Post #1247. Booths are available for $25.

There will be art, crafts, jewelry and more available for those getting a jump on Christmas shopping. March in the Veterans Day Parade Finally, don’t forget this year’s Veterans Day Parade. This annual event is the second largest parade in Grand Junction. Presented by The Veterans Committee of the Western Slope, this event commemorates those who were willing to serve and sacrifice for their country. Welcome home a vet Montrose has a wonderful program to welcome home and empower veterans of all ages and of every branch of the military.

Welcome Home Montrose is a grassroots community initiative that aims to reshape Montrose into a supportive “no barriers” community for veterans by partnering with local people and organizations to provide counseling and support for those suffering from PTSD; opportunities for camaraderie; tai chi and art classes; outdoor recreation; resources for finding jobs, housing and financial assistance; and more.

This plethora of services is offered at the Warrior Resource Center, 11 S. Park Ave. in Montrose. WHM receives no fiscal government support and is funded through volunteer hours and donations. For information on how you can help, call 765-2210.

he official greeter at the Veterans’ Art Center (VAC), 307 S. 12th St. in Grand Junction, charms visitors with her soft brown eyes, silky coat and cold nose.

Sweetie Belle, the resident shop dog, welcomes everyone to a unique service for veterans and their families. She’s not the only four-legged employee. Honey Blue, who belongs to a veteran who is rehabilitating from a broken hip, makes an occasional appearance, as does Roscoe, an oversized bundle of empathy disguised as a mutt.

The center, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, is the brainchild of CEO, president and founder Wendy Hoffman. With a master of fine arts from the University of Lethbridge in Alberta, Canada, and certifications in psychology, social work, and leadership and management, Hoffman provides a broad spectrum of services to vets.

She developed the idea after attending a Yellow Ribbon symposium in Nashville, where the emphasis was on using sports as a way to prevent suicides, reintegrate military personnel into civilian society, and deal with mental illness.

“I thought, ‘Wait a minute. There should be a place for art, too,’” Hoffman recounted, because art helped her heal from PTSD and multiple personality disorder.

“All through school I was obsessed with creating art that featured little white boots,” she said. “It took years for me to discover that when I was 2 years old, my father beat me for getting my little white boots muddy, leaving me bleeding and unconscious in the snow. I was in a coma for three days. I had repressed that experience until I was an adult.”

That’s what makes her so empathetic in dealing with the psychological traumas faced by vets. Tissue boxes scattered around the center are on hand for the occasional meltdown, and Hoffman’s shoulders are broad enough to soak up torrents of tears.

“We don’t have any professional counselors here,” she said. “No documentation, just conversation.” Which makes clients very comfortable in

The center is not affiliated with any government entity. Over 100 volunteers work in the many departments.

There are no paid employees, not even Hoffman. The center depends entirely on donations. Almost 900 vets and their families were served in fiscal year 2013. There are no dues and only a three-line form to fill out if a vet wishes to participate in the center’s activities.

“The arts are therapeutic,” Hoffman said. “Creating something with your hands and mind helps those with traumatic brain injuries and post-traumatic stress disorder. Art is a catharsis. Once the trauma is out in the open, you can’t put it back.”

Classes in oil and acrylic painting, as well as watercolor, are offered. Jessica Coulter teaches pen and ink drawing at the center.

“We start with doodle art, sometimes called tangle art, simple lines on the page,” Coulter said.

“Then I show students how to fill in with paisleys, crosshatching and other forms. Because it’s freeform, you can’t get it wrong, which is important for those who are nervous about venturing into art.

You just can’t make a mistake. All you need is a notebook and a pen and you can take your creativity anywhere.”

The center used to belong to the Daily Sentinel, and three antique letterpress machines are now operated by Colorado Mesa University instructor Eli Hall, who teaches graphic design and typography at CMU. He and his students use the space to create projects that will help his students add an unusual skill to their portfolios.

“Using a letterpress allows them to work more directly with the print,” Hall said. “Their portfolios benefit because typography in letterpress has been largely ignored.”

Hall and Hoffman worked out a trade: Hall cleaned up and organized the space and maintains the machines in exchange for his students’ weekly classes. He will also teach others to use letterpress by appointment. If you’re interested in watching the process, he and his students will be running the presses from 6 p.m.-8 p.m. on Friday, November 7, at the VAC and also in Room 301 of the CMU Fine Arts building.

Down the hall, Dallas Hanson, an Iraq veteran assigned to the Army 82nd Airborne, keeps an eye on the laser engraver as it zips across a metal plate to become a plaque to commemorate a local man’s commitment to his vintage Lincoln Continental. Once he’s sure it’s working as it should, he retreats to the computer-aided sign shop, where he creates vinyl banners and other signs. He also transfers vets’ artwork to T-shirts and other fabric, using a Chromablast printer. A sublimation process prints mugs, hats and polycarbonate materials. Hanson runs his business, Wildflower Tech Creations, LLC, from the center, where he engraves wine glasses and other objects to commemorate weddings, anniversaries and other special events.

SPORTS Drop-In Pickleball When the weather turns cold, keep on playing! There will be three indoor courts available at Lincoln Park Barn. Equipment is available to borrow at the Parks and Recreation office, located south of the pool.

Advice Column for the Over 50 Crowd

By Gayle LagmanCreswick Dear Old Bag: My 97-year-old father lives alone in my sister-in-law’s guesthouse. We finally made him stop driving this summer. He is still upset about losing his license, and has decided that he is going to buy a bicycle (not the three-wheel kind).

He is blessed with several children and grandchildren that stop by, but he refuses to have hired caregivers check up on him. My sister and sister-in-law want him to live in a senior living facility but he absolutely refuses. Though my dad is very much alert and intelligent, I am worried that some scumbag will get to him and convince him of some scheme. I am not sure how to deal with his care. How do you convince someone that they need help every morning to make sure they are eating (he has never cooked) and drinking enough water? He isn’t bathing as often. Everyone is getting frustrated, even my dad. We just want him to be safe. He is in amazing health and we hope he will live many more years, but we are also afraid that he will hurt himself living alone. Any suggestions?

Signed, Desperate Daughter Dear Daughter: I cannot tell you how many times I have heard this story over the years. Here is my advice: Your dad sounds like me, and maybe my dad before me. He wants to do things his way. I believe he has earned that right. Yes, he might get hurt. He may not eat right. He may smell from not bathing often. And someday you may find him unconscious. You will have the satisfaction of knowing that he did it “his way.”

You let him preserve his last bit of freedom. I would also encourage you to get guardianship, while he is able to give it, so if the day comes when he cannot think for himself, you will have it done. Also, I suggest you get him a pendant to wear, and subscribe to a company that will summon

emergency help in case he needs it.

Order Meals on Wheels for him. Just love him, enjoy him and admire his spunk. OB

Dear Old Bag: In my cardiologist’s office, they have a sign that says you are to be there 20 minutes before your scheduled appointment. I am. Then I sit there for another hour waiting for my appointment. What is the sense in this? I sit there and get mad at them for wanting me there early. What do you think of this? Signed, Perplexed Dear Perplexed: I think they don’t believe your time is as valuable as theirs. I also think they don’t understand good customer service. It seems like they believe you are there to please them. It seems like they do not understand that you pay their salary. It is a pet peeve of mine as well.

It’s not because I don’t enjoy the season; it’s because every year my husband seems to use the holidays as an excuse for drinking too much.

He is a wonderful guy—except when he drinks. I can tell that our kids dread what he might say when he has too much to drink. I have never confronted him with this and neither have his kids. I think it is because 98 percent of the time, he is wonderful to all of us. Please help.

How to avoid the dangers of low blood pressure

I’m Jake R. Atwood and although I am new to town, I am not new to Prosthodontics.

n many instances, low blood pressure isn’t serious. But it’s important to see a doctor if you have symptoms because they can sometimes point to more serious problems.

Some experts define low blood pressure as readings lower than 90 systolic or 60 diastolic. However, low blood pressure is relative, so doctors often define blood pressure as too low only if there are symptoms.

Low blood pressure, or hypotension, is commonly caused by drugs for high blood pressure, surgical medications, anti-anxiety agents, diuretics, heart medicines, antidepressants, narcotic painkillers and alcohol. Other causes include dehydration, heart failure, heart arrhythmias, shock from infection, stroke, severe allergic reaction, major trauma, heart attack and advanced diabetes.

Postprandial hypotension, or low blood pressure that occurs after eating, is a senior malady. When you eat, blood pours into your digestive system. To maintain your blood pressure, your heart pumps more often and your blood vessels constrict. But these compensatory mechanisms don’t work for some people.

Possible symptoms include dizziness, blurred vision, nausea and fainting.

To help prevent postprandial hypotension, eat small portions several times a day and limit high-carbohydrate foods such as potatoes, rice, pasta and bread.

Postural hypotension, or ortho-

static hypotension, is another type of low blood pressure that affects some people when they stand up because blood pools in the legs. It’s especially common in older adults who are more likely to use high blood pressure drugs.

It is possible to raise blood pressure by doing the following: • Eating more salt. But too much sodium can cause heart failure, especially among seniors. Don’t increase your salt without consulting your doctor.

• Drinking more water. Fluids increase blood volume and help prevent dehydration.

• Using compression stockings to help reduce the pooling of blood in your legs.

There are also medications your doctor may prescribe.

Hypotension can lead to falls, which can be serious for seniors.

Here are some ways to avoid falling because of low blood pressure: • Let your feet hang over the side of your bed before rising.

• Flex your toes up and down about a dozen times, then stand up slowly.

• Count to 10 before you start walking. It’s a good idea to do all this when you get up from lying or sitting for more than 20 minutes.

• Crossing your legs while sitting upright may also help raise blood pressure. ■

am sure Walt followed his own advice, and more power to him, but for most of us, the “and begin doing” part is the problem, especially when it comes to exercising on a regular basis.

It’s no great revelation that exercise is critical for maintaining physical, mental and emotional health. Recent studies have confirmed the benefits of aerobic exercise, an activity that increases the heartbeat and the supply of oxygen to the body for mental acuity.

The difficulty with being human, of course, is that even when we know something is good for our health, and we have the best intentions of implementing what we know, we start a healthy regimen with enthusiasm and then lose our spunk and slowly peter out.

This was my pattern for exercising on a regular basis. I would last a few weeks, or months, and then slowly my good intentions would dissipate and ennui would set in, leaving me disgruntled and sitting on my couch eating a donut.

One morning after years of not doing any regular exercise, I decided for my health that I needed to get off that couch and put down that donut. But how could I avoid Albert Einstein’s definition of insanity— doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results?

After thinking about it, I realized that an important change from my previous exercise efforts would be to start with a small goal, such as walking to my corner mailbox and back— a total of five minutes. The thought of that goal assuaged my dread of starting to exercise. I could easily do five minutes.

“Besides,” I told myself, “I can mail

any letters I might have.”

Next step, how often?

“Well,” I again told myself, “if it’s only five minutes, why not five days a week and take the weekend off?”

I love my weekends off.

I knew in my bones, however, that the issue I needed the most help with was how to stick with my new plan.

What could I do that was different from all the other times I started an exercise program? How could I avoid insanity? The exercise gods sent me an answer: “Walk for your breakfast.”

I love breakfast. On most days it’s my favorite meal, so I told myself: No breakfast until you walk to the mailbox and back. The “breakfast carrot” worked like I was a rabbit.

It has now been over six months since I started walking for my breakfast and I have rarely missed a day, and when I have, it has generally been because of severe weather. The first day I only walked to the mailbox and back, but gradually I increased the distance, and almost every day since I have walked at least 15 minutes or more. But getting to that mailbox is always my primary goal, while images of breakfast dance in my head.

My exercise carrot will not work for everyone. For many, eating before exercising is a necessity. But the premise of not doing something you enjoy unless you exercise first can be a game changer. So if you are a couch potato and are thinking of retiring, why not come up with your own exercise carrot?

Final note: Even though I am sure your lawyer is a fine person, I would prefer not hearing from him or her, so please check with your doctor before starting any exercise program. ■

We nightwalkers know the value of motion. For example, rather than thrashing among sheets and blankets, we roam the house or walk in the moonlight. We play board games with ourselves and do deep knee bends.

For people with an undeniable need to move, www.rls.org is an excellent resource. Many people do not get the disturbing symptoms of WED/RLS until later in life but no matter the age, WED/RLS is unpleasant yet often undiagnosed.

First, you as a sufferer, need to dispel the unspoken notion or fear that you are crazy.

Why should you know?

To be informed is to improve the quality of your life. To know resources can, at least, somewhat restore restful sleep. You can plan your lifestyle and dietary considerations to improve your quandary.

Also, trust family members who see what you don’t and record their observations. For example, “Mom, do you know that while you napped on my floor, your legs moved every 17 seconds?” Share that data at your next doctor’s visit.

Although it’s up to your physician to treat you, only you can advocate with authority about what you experience. Only you can enlist the aid of an understanding primary care physician (PCP) or specialist. Only you can make the strange requests, such as the extra precaution suggested by the Restless Legs Foundation—have a red label attached on the outside of your medical chart to signal providers that you have special needs.

You, your medical providers and your family.

First, you as a sufferer, need to dispel the unspoken notion or fear that you are crazy. When you understand the cause of your misery, essential treatment can follow.

Next, enlist the support of your family members as you explain why you stand at unusual times, why you walk the floors during the night, and why you avoid night-time activities.

Disrespect has no part in your behavior. You are merely relieving misery so as to stay with your loved ones.

Who makes the diagnosis?

You and a medical team.

WED/RLS is often misdiagnosed or not diagnosed, so there’s a lot you can do to speed things along. For instance, visiting www.rls.org and answering the Cambridge-Hopkins Short Form Diagnostic Questionnaire for RLS, a survey prepared by Dr. Richard Allen, will assure you what you are dealing with. Another way is to use the diagnostic acronym URGE: Urge to move limbs, usually accompanied or caused by uncomfortable and unpleasant feelings in the limbs; rest worsens or inactivity precipitates symptoms; getting up or moving improves the urge to move. If either of these sources ring true for you, a sleep specialist is the next step.

Before visiting medical providers, use the Symptom Diary found at RLS. org. Not all are aware of or have information about this disease, so take pamphlets provided by RLS Foundation with you.

What causes WED/RLS? My husband would say, “It’s in your head.” Indeed it is. It’s at the midsection of my skull in the brain stem, which coordinates motor control signals. According to doctors

Sleep specialists imply that the interruption of oxygen to the brain caused by sleep apnea episodes also contributes to WED/RLS.

What can be done?

Medications are available. Some patients respond to Requip or Senimet (often used for Parkinson’s disease) while others are prescribed Mirapex and Clonazepam. Your PCP or specialist can help determine which pharmaceutical is best for you. You should also pay attention to your diet, exercise and good sleep hygiene.

Management of WED/RLS Recognize your biological clock and listen to your body’s promptings.

Employ distractions to minimize symptoms.

Every person is unique. Therefore, what ignites WED/RLS in you might not in someone else. However, certain dietary ingredients are suspect.

The times of night you take your medication and eat are important.

The window of opportunity for less distress seems to be 6 p.m.-7 p.m.

Make sure to take your medications with the meal.

And your bladder matters. When uneasiness or wiggles commence, a visit to the restroom helps.

Advice from a nightwalker Don’t panic. Redirect your mind.

Allow about 15 minutes to determine if your distress subsides. When it persists, walk, work a puzzle, bake, bike, swim, write in your journal, take a bath, etc.

Use popcorn and peanuts when in confined settings (air planes, vehicles, movies). Eating only one piece at a time may bring relief. The chewing can be a distraction.

WED/ RLS is a complex disease with many contributing agents.

As nightwalkers search for a good night’s sleep, they must become detectives to identify culprits that destroy the quality of their lives. ■

Keeping up with technology Waters Farm is an alfalfa seed production farm that grows alfalfa plants on 700 acres for companies like Pioneer and Land O’ Lakes. Troy Waters talked about using leaf-cutter bees for pollination and enlightened us on the advantages of burning fields over tilling.

Waters said it’s simple economics and field management. Burning is a more economically viable option for the farm since it conserves diesel fuel because burning only requires one trip across the fields whereas tilling requires multiple trips. Tilling also raises dust, which Waters said is just as annoying as smoke from burning fields. The farm also uses less herbicide since burning kills the weeds.

I was particularly fascinated by the high-tech machines used on farms.

Back at the research center, Dr. Calvin Pearson showed us several large tractors with various attachments to accomplish different jobs.

Waters said that with the precise selection of the best traits, they are able to produce crops with better resistance to disease and pests. He also said that two regulatory agencies, the USDA and the FDA, scrutinize every new GMO introduction on a case-bycase basis, which keeps GMO crops safe for humans and animals.

Sharing the importance of agriculture From county officials to area farmers, the tour attracted a variety of attendees who were interested in knowing more about this important sector of our economy.

Grand Junction Chamber of Commerce President Diane Schwenke said it’s important to know what our farming community is doing to manage the land and keep farms profitable.

So the next time you have to wait to pass a large tractor going down a country road, have a little patience and maybe even thank them. Chances are that farmer is directly responsible for what shows up on your dinner plate. ■

On Sunday night we developed a tradition of holding a special prayer service that attracted people from all over the county.

At the end of the service one night, the preacher called out, “Anyone here with special needs who wants to be prayed over, please come forward to the altar.”

With that, a young man wearing bib overalls got in line. He appeared a bit nervous. When it was his turn, the preacher asked, “Son, what do you want us to pray about for you?”

Rather reluctantly the young man replied, “Preacher, I need you to pray for help with my hearing.”

Ready to get to work, the preacher put a finger of one hand in the young man’s ear, placed his other hand on top of the boy’s head, and then commenced to pray in a mighty way.

He prayed and prayed and prayed.

The congregation joined in with great enthusiasm.

After winding down the prayer the preacher removed his hands, stood back and asked, “Son, how is your hearing now?”

10 things to do in Ottawa

ttawa, Canada’s vibrant capital, is a world-class city closer to Central New York than New York City. It has the look of a European city with the Gothic Revival Parliament building and the colorful Changing of the Guard.

Ottawa was chosen as the capital because it was nearly midpoint between Toronto and Quebec City, and its location in what was then the backcountry made it more defensible should their neighbors to the south decide to attack. Plus, it offered easy access to major waterways.

1. Parliament Hill: The current building was built in the 1920s after a devastating fire destroyed the original building. Only the library was saved, due to the metal doors. There are many free activities. During the summer, the colorful Changing of the Guard takes place each morning, and in the evening there is the awe-inspiring Mosaika Sound and Light Show. During the day there are carillon concerts and tours of the building. Be sure to take in the view from the 302-foot Peace Tower in the center of the parliament building.

2. Rideau Canal: The Rideau Canal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, opened in 1832 connecting Ottawa and Kingston with the St. Lawrence River. It was constructed because of the military threat posed by the

United States. Lieutenant Colonel John By supervised the construction which, like the Erie Canal, brought workers from around the world. Between Parliament Hill and the Fairmont Chateau Laurier Hotel, there is a flight of eight locks, the largest set of locks in the Rideau system. Rideau still has hand-operated locks which raise boats from the Ottawa River 79 feet to the canal. Next to the locks is Bytown Museum, housed in Ottawa’s oldest stone building. Paul’s Boat Tours offers a variety of tours on the canal.

3. Tours: The best way to get acquainted with a new location is to take a hop-on-hop-off bus tour. There are two tour companies, Lady Dive and Gray Line, but they offer the same tour, with Lady Dive offering an amphibious tour. This fun, historical and educational tour takes about 75 minutes. The tour stops at the museums, Byward Market and other places of interest. A two-day ticket is best in order to spend adequate time at interesting stops.

4. Museums: The Canadian Museum of Civilization is Canada’s largest and most popular museum, chronicling 1,000 years of Canadian history. Don’t miss the First Peoples Hall, which highlights the culture of Canada’s aborigines, and the Grand Hall featuring the world’s largest collection of totem poles. The Canada Aviation Museum has a collection

November 2014 that focuses on the development of the flying machine along with its use in peace and war. Other popular museums deal with nature, science and currency.

5. Art: The National Gallery of Canada has a comprehensive collection of Canadian art, including Inuit art.

Don’t miss the amazing reconstruction of the Rideau Chapel in one of the galleries. The museum saved the beautiful 1887 chapel of the Convent of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart from destruction. While walking about, take time to check out the historic bronze statues. Sit on the piano bench next to Oscar Peterson’s statue outside the National Arts Center and listen to the music.

6. Gardens: There are several historic destinations with pretty gardens but the most unique has to be the Mackenzie King Estate that features heritage gardens, walking trails, and the cottage of Canada’s 10th prime minister. A unique aspect is the picturesque ruins Mackenzie rescued from destruction by placing them throughout the property. Rideau Hall, the official residence of Canada’s Governor General, is surrounded by a wonderful heritage garden, including an Inuit stone marker and commemorative trees.

7. ByWard Market: There is always something happening in ByWard.

Established in 1826 by John By, it’s Canada’s oldest and largest public market. It is the place to shop, eat and more. Make sure you try Ottawa’s favorite treat—beaver tails.

Beaver tails are whole-wheat pastries drizzled with butter and topped with apples, cinnamon, bananas, M&Ms or many other choices.

www.BeaconSeniorNews.com 8. Biking and more: Miles of pathways link historic sites, parks and gardens, including trails along the Rideau Canal and Ottawa River. From May to October on Sunday, some streets are closed to motor traffic.

Gatineau Park offers great opportunities for mountain biking and hiking.

Don’t have a bike? No worries. There are many places to rent them. During the winter, the Ottawa Skateway offers over four miles of skating on the frozen Rideau Canal.

9. Festivals: Ottawa has a festival for every season, starting with the Spring Tulip Festival that celebrates the return of spring, to Canada Day, the largest Canadian birthday celebration, to the three-week fun-filled Winterlude. There are also events that feature food, balloons, music and fundraising races.

10. Unique: Don’t miss Remic Rapids Balanced Rock Sculptures, but don’t touch.

John Ceprano’s sculptures line the river and seem to defy gravity. The historic Carleton County Gaol (a former Ottawa jail) is now a hostel located within walking distance to Parliament Hill and other sites. If staying in a jail is not to your liking then you can stay at the Fairmont Chateau Laurier, fondly referred to by locals as “The Castle.”

For lovers of the paranormal there are several haunted walks where visitors can learn about the city’s ghosts, goblins and other unsavory citizens.

Reminder: Americans must have a valid U.S. passport when returning to the United States by air, and if returning by land or sea, Americans must have a passport card, NEXUS card or an enhanced driver’s license. ■

elta and Montrose have been home to the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks for over 100 years. Their histories are unique, each working to provide an opportunity for friendship and support of great local causes.

Determined to be Delta Elks The Delta Elks Lodge #1235 was founded on May 10, 1911. Initially, the Grand Lodge refused Delta’s request to have a lodge of its own because the town was considered too small. But many Delta men refused to give up and banded together to gather names of residents who were interested in joining the order. Supposedly some even got a little creative in “growing” the town’s population.

One of those spirited men, I. C. Hall, allegedly said, “We did have a little trouble along that line; however, we visited George Hider’s ranch at Payne Siding, counting noses of all prairie dogs out there and duly enrolled them as citizens of Delta, which caused our population to reach the required Grand Lodge demand.”

The Delta men hosted a grand dinner for Elks officers from all over Western Colorado in order to impress upon them their wish for Delta to have its own Elks lodge. Presiding

as toastmaster that evening was T. J. Black of the Montrose Elks Lodge.

After the dinner, the men went to the Delta Opera House, where 77 men were initiated as Elks and 73 were admitted through transfer from other lodges. The first case of extended charity by the Delta Elks also happened that evening on the behalf of a poor family, who were ill and in distress. Funds were collected from Montrose Elks’ prize-winning parade float.

On April 21, 1911, Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler W. W. Rowan said, “Hang your banners on the outer walls and shout loud the victory, for a dispensation has been granted to institute Delta Lodge No. 1235 B.P.O.E.” On June 7, a committee was formed to seek out a site on which to build a

permanent lodge. A location was secured for $6,000, although the lodge was not built until 14 years later.

The first annual Delta Elks Ball and Banquet was held on February 15, 1912. The ball is still a popular event today.

During World War II, several Delta Elks went off to war, as did many of their sons. The lodge suffered a great loss when past Exalted Ruler Richard R. Day died in 1945 while serving in the Navy. Many others from Delta met the same fate.

Today, the members continue to follow the traditions established in 1911. The Delta Elks Lodge, 563 Main St., now has over 600 members.

The lodge maintains a family atmosphere by encouraging members to bring their spouses, children and grandchildren to bingo nights, Friday night dinners and summer picnics.

In addition to members-only lodge meetings, dinners and dances, the lodge has hosted wedding receptions, anniversary celebrations, birthday parties, class reunions, Christmas parties and other public events.

Public service is integral to the Delta Elks. They are proud of their veterans’ programs, youth activities, patriotic endeavors and scholarships for graduating seniors. The lodge also participates in the national Elks Hoop Shoot Free Throw Contest, where kids strive to compete in a free-throw contest at the national level and have the opportunity to gain new experiences and meet new friends.

Montrose Elks Lodge #1053 was organized in 1906. Like Delta, it took time to garner enough interest in starting a lodge, but it eventually came to fruition.

The new lodge’s first concern was to secure a place to meet. They rented space until their own building was completed on September 30, 1927. Today, the building houses the Montrose City Council Chambers.

World War I had begun and the time came for members to pay their dues. Lodge officials made a list of all their members in the service and sent them a paid-up card marked with a stamp, which read “for the duration of the war.” During World War II, men in uniform received a courtesy card, allowing them the full privileges of the club, regardless as to whether they were members of the lodge or residents of the Montrose jurisdiction. The lodge lost many members during both wars.

In 1949, the Montrose Elks Lodge was chosen to lay the cornerstone for Montrose Memorial Hospital. Having donated $25,000 for the construction of the near $500,000 hospital, they were the largest donors and in 1950, they were asked to dedicate the hospital.

The National Guard Armory in Montrose was built in the summer of 1956 on a block of ground donated to the state by the Montrose Elks Lodge.

In 1968, the lodge moved to its present location on 801 Hillcrest Drive. Today, the lodge continues to focus on families and charities.

“Most organizations have a statement,” Exalted Ruler Paul Moore, 77, said. “For myself, it is ‘To serve those who need help.’ I find it very enjoyable when we have a good turnout at our events and fundraisers.”

One of the unique events to the Montrose Lodge is Youth Appreciation Day, a citywide event featuring numerous activities for Montrose youth.

The lodge offers free breakfasts for all youths who wish to attend, along with their parents, who can attend for $1.

Each year the Montrose Elks Lodge hosts a Rescue/Fire Person Appreciation Day, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner for the Montrose Police Department, Montrose Fire Department, Montrose County Sheriff’s Office, the local state patrol unit, Olathe Police Department, Olathe Fire Department, park rangers and game wardens.

The lodge is dedicated to helping veterans. Veterans and the public are invited to a veterans’ breakfast from 7:30 a.m.-10 a.m. on November 11.

“We are truly a charitable organization,” lodge member Keith Ellis, 81, said.

Lodge meetings are at 7:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month. For more information, call 249-4852. ■

“I learn so much when we do the roundtables,” Last said. “You have so many more professional sets of eyes on any one plan.”

Shaffer said a good team helps make retirement planning easier.

“Finding people who you connect with and who are experts in their area is important to make an easier transition [into retirement],” she said.

“Making sure you get all these perspectives allows you to have so many more options.”

Last advised BEACON readers to

think about retirement at least 5 to 10 years in advance.

“Think about it not just in terms of savings and assets, but in terms of planning legally with wills and powers of attorney, because those changes can happen at anytime,” she said. “The more flexibility is available the sooner you start.”

Gustafson urged seniors to educate themselves early on about living options and other aspects of retirement.

“Don’t wait for a catalyst like a serious health issue to propel you,” Gustafson advised attendees in the program’s handout. “Making decisions while you are healthy and of sound mind can reduce stress and frustration. None of us want to burden our family with the sometimes difficult choices that need to be made.”

Retirement planning can be overwhelming since there is much to consider. But how can you be sure that you are making the right choices?

“I’m there to help [seniors] make the best decision,” Chandler said, “and selling their home may not be the right one for them.” That’s why she can refer them to other professionals, such as those who specialize in reverse mortgages.

Army vet rejects disability, competes in adaptive sports

im Gerloff, 67, of Rifle, is an American hero and a world-class athlete. He served in the Army with the 101st Airborne Division, the 173rd Airborne Brigade, and the Special Forces during the Vietnam War.

Gerloff grew up in Dolton, Illinois, a suburb south of Chicago. In high school, he was a multi-sport athlete, having participated in baseball, swimming, track and field, and golf.

He volunteered for military service when he was 18.

“I knew I would be drafted, so I went ahead and signed up,” he said.

Gerloff got out of the Army in 1968, but it was then that his twin brother and his older brother were both drafted. Gerloff re-enlisted and volunteered for combat to ensure his brothers would not be sent to Vietnam.

“If someone said I couldn’t do something, I’d go out and learn and go and do it,” Gerloff said.

He has won numerous medals and continues to train rigorously by lifting weights and swimming. He also golfs daily.

He uses his participation in sports to encourage people who are confined to a wheelchair.

“I don’t do it for the medals anymore,” he said, “just for the competition.”

Gerloff tells the story of one friend he encouraged to take up sports.

“I showed him how to do the shot put and he ends up beating me. I showed him how to throw the discus and then he beat me. I showed him how to throw the javelin and he beats me,” he said with a laugh.

“That’s what the sports are for—to help the newly injured. You get them competitive, find a sport they are really good at, and then push them at it.

That way they will get out.”

Gerloff’s active lifestyle, positive attitude and heart to help others are an inspiration to everyone he meets.

“You are only as crippled or poor off as you want to be,” he said. “Anyone in a wheel chair can be an active and vital part of the community.” ■

Austrian-born soldier remembers the forgotten war

T

he Korean War has been dubbed “The Forgotten War” because it did not command the same media attention as World War II or Vietnam. Officially, the Korean War was a police action because President Harry Truman never petitioned Congress for a formal declaration of war.

But one man will never forget the armed conflict that claimed nearly 40,000 American lives and left 100,000 uniformed personnel wounded in an attempt to stop the spread of communism.

Karl Emerich, 83, remembers the exact date he was drafted into the Army: June 6, 1951. He arrived in the U.S. from Austria as an orphan in 1947.

“I’m proud that I served at a time when they needed me,” he said. “I served before I was a U.S. citizen.”

Private Emerich spent eight weeks in basic training at Fort Ord, California. From there he was granted a 30-day leave before joining U.S. troops in Korea. His first assignment was on the job training as a machine gunner with the 1st Cavalry Division to which the 45th Infantry Division of the Oklahoma National Guard had been attached.

“The U.S. was losing a lot of men up north, so we were sent to replace them north of Panmunjom, which was North Korean headquarters,” Emerich said.

Three months later he was re-assigned to the 2nd Infantry Division in the Iron Triangle, an area bounded by Cheorwon, Kumhwa and Pyongyang.

Afterward, he served as a rifleman with the 101st Airborne Division.

Emerich served in Korea between October 1951 and November 1952, but never sustained an injury in his 13 months of combat duty other than some hearing loss from the artillery.

The only close call came one day when he was sitting on top of a hill.

“It was wintertime and very cold, so I had many layers of clothing on,” he said. “I’m not sure if I was specifically targeted, but an artillery round was fired and a piece of shrapnel landed just a few inches from me.

It was the size of a pencil and razor sharp. I picked it up and it burned a hole in my glove.”

spent the remainder of his service obligation as an Army reservist at Camp Stoneman in northern California, where he worked for the post engineer as a draftsman.

In April 1954, Emerich took the test to become a U.S. citizen.

“I came before the judge, who usually asks a lot of civics questions,” he said. “I had my military uniform on and the judge asked me if I knew anything about politics. When I said ‘yes,’ he asked me if I knew the name of the first president of the United

States. When I said ‘George Washington’ the judge said, ‘Okay, you’re a citizen.’”

Emerich was discharged as a Private First Class in 1956. Today, he wears a baseball cap decorated with the Infantry Rifleman badge, the Korean Service Medal ribbon, and Good Conduct Medal ribbon. Five years ago, he was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious service.

His wife, Sherron, 69, is proud of his service to his adopted country.

“I wish I could have been there to welcome him home from Korea,” she said. “Karl said there were all sorts of families waiting to greet their soldiers.”

The Korean War remains under a ceasefire with no peace treaty in place. “The Land of Morning Calm” is hardly a peaceful place with skirmishes still reported along the Demilitarized Zone between North and South Korea. But Emerich said, “I would like to go back someday when the people are smiling again.” ■

She was not happy there so he decided to move her to Colorado State Veterans Community Living Center in Rifle where he could move in to be with her. They lived there together until her death on May 15, 2014. They were married 64 years.

Velasquez created a living tribute to his wife by reclaiming a neglected area of the living center’s grounds and planting 36 rose bushes, creating an inviting walkway, and replanting containers of flowers and vegetables all around the center. He waters and cares for them all.

He said he finds it gratifying to make life a little better for his fellow veterans with the smell of a rose and the taste of a fresh tomato.

He also teaches a history class twice a month. Other veterans who have moved to the community living center often don’t know much about the area. His talks on local lore have helped them feel more at home.

Velasquez remembered Williams saying, “When I leave this world, if I’ve made life a little bit better for one other person, that’s really what life is about.”

He has adopted this motto and is living it out at the Colorado State Veterans Community Living Center at Rifle. ■

Robert Rossi: rancher, veteran

obert M. Rossi was born on February 26, 1926 in Oak Creek, Colorado. His parents, George and Amelia, were both natives of Austria.

Rossi graduated high school in Yampa, Colorado. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was stationed all over the U.S. He said his “overseas duty” took place in Puerto Rico. He was a radioman on a torpedo plane. He was in the service for two and a half years and was discharged in 1946.

Rossi said it was good to get back to his family, but he was too busy chasing cows to worry about getting married. Then he started helping Lorraine, who owned Club Café in Yampa. They were married in 1950 and spent their years dancing every chance they got. He and Lorraine had three children, Alan, Susie and George, and she had a son, Bill, from a previous relationship.

Years later, the Rossis sold their ranch and relocated to Mack, Colorado. They have nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

In May, Rossi was named “Father of the Year” by the Mesa County Cattlewomen Association for his work in the livestock industry and for his service to our country. ■

frustrated about war.

“We sent those boys over there, in a sense, handcuffed and unable to do their job,” he said.

But in spite of his frustrations, he said his time in the military was more rewarding than his civilian career.

“I enjoyed the camaraderie and having the sense of accomplishment,” he said.

Lower visits the Warrior Resource Center in Montrose “to help others who have been in harm’s way. They lived under trying circumstances. I want to show my gratitude and support.”

Lower said it makes him feel proud when someone stops him and thanks him for serving.

“It’s a simple phrase but it means more to us than all of the big ceremonies,” he said. ■

“On the Verge” brings back the ’50s

he year is 1888, and three unconventional women are about to find out that time and space are fluid. In Eric Overmyer’s play, “On the Verge,” Fanny, a correspondent for a tabloid newspaper; Alexandra, a budding lyricist of pop songs; and Mary, an anthropologist and physical scientist, find themselves traveling to 1955, arriving in the unknown land of Terra Incognita.

This play, presented by Colorado Mesa University’s Black Box Theater, combines humor, high adventure and romance as the ladies learn to cope with new experiences, new inventions, and new vocabulary as they slide through the decades.

According to the CMU press release, “It’s an exciting, theatrical adventure led by a trio of intrepid trekkers who pass through a jungle bejeweled with artifacts of the future, hack through history’s underbrush, sojourn with cannibals, bridge-guarding trolls, gas station attendants and night club crooners, taste Cool Whip and experience the miracle of the Jacuzzi. Along the way, they explore language, imagination and, most of all, the human desire to wander unmapped places both inside and outside ourselves.”

Junior Hannah Fisher plays Fanny, a married woman writer who leaves her husband so often that he’s always surprised when she comes back.

“I think the best part of being Fanny is how much she grows on her journey,” Fisher said. “She’s the most stable one of the three, motherly and proper. She wants to go back to 1888.”

Alexandra, aka Alex, is played by senior Rachel Boyce, who said, “I love Alex! She seems spacey but she’s really free. She’s spirited and loves exploring and adventuring.

High adventure and stupefying risk are her métier,” she said, quoting from the play. “She doesn’t let herself

be swayed by those who think her dream is unrealistic.”

Scientist Mary is portrayed by senior Emily Lackner. Her character charges ahead, fascinated by all the scientific breakthroughs she witnesses on their strange journey. She’s ready to push ahead and make her mark on an uncertain future.

“Mary’s all about exploring and adventuring,” Lackner said. “She pushes against social norms and wants to break through the glass ceiling.”

This play is appropriate for all ages, and Boyce said she thinks that there’s a lot of nostalgia involved for those who remember 1955. And a lot of laughs, too.

Think back to the slang of the ’50s and you’ll understand how the characters get “lost in translation.” The gadgetry dear to American hearts also befuddles the three. If you’ve never seen a rotary eggbeater, how would you figure out what it was for?

How would your first taste of Cool Whip affect you? How about puzzling over a Jacuzzi?

According to the cast, the play is technically and visually spectacular.

Sets depict the Himalayas and other exotic locales, while robotic giraffes wander across the scene. One character even makes an airborne entrance.

According to Publicist Laura Bradley, the play asks, “What is it that calls us on to discover the new and strange and incorporate it into what we are by making it part of what we do and know? Like the lady travelers of the play, each of us lives every moment of every day on the verge.

The reasons we find for continuing the journey are the geography of our own yearnings.​” Directed by Shay Lydick, “On the Verge” will be presented at the Robinson Theater on the CMU campus from November 12-15 at 7:30 p.m.

etirement isn’t cheap. Even though you’re no longer drawing a paycheck, you must still pay for housing, food, utilities, transportation and health care, to name a few.

As prices continue to escalate, it’s not surprising that the ages at which people expect to retire and when they actually do have crept up in recent years.

Speaking of health care costs, according to an annual Fidelity Investments study of retirement costs, the average couple retiring in 2014 at age 65 is expected to need $220,000 (in today’s dollars) to cover their medical expenses in retirement. Those planning to retire at 62 can expect another $17,000 in additional annual expenses.

Fidelity’s estimate includes Medicare premiums, deductibles, copayments and other out-of-pocket costs, but does not include most dental or vision services, over-the-counter medications or long-term care.

When Fidelity polled pre-retirees aged 55 to 64, 48 percent believed they would only need $50,000 to cover their health care costs in retirement. That’s quite a reality gap.

If you’re planning to retire in the next few years and are concerned you haven’t saved enough money to cover your health care expenses, here is a sample of what to expect to pay.

Medicare Part A helps cover inpatient hospital, skilled nursing facility and hospice services, as well as home health care. Most people pay no monthly premium for Part A. However, in 2014 there’s a $1,216 deductible for each time you’re admitted as an inpatient, plus a $306 daily coinsurance after 60 days ($608 per day after 90 days).

Medicare Part B pays toward medically necessary doctor’s services, outpatient care, durable medical equipment and many preventive services. It’s optional and has a $104.90 monthly premium (although higher-

income people pay more). There’s a $147 yearly deductible, after which you’re responsible for 20 percent of Medicare-approved service amounts, provided the doctor/provider accepts Medicare. Note: There’s no annual limit for out-of-pocket expenses.

Medicare Part C (Advantage) plans are offered by private insurers as alternatives to Parts A and B. They’re usually structured like HMO or PPO plans. Most cover prescription drugs (so Part D is unnecessary) and some also provide dental and vision coverage. You must use the plan’s doctor, hospital and pharmacy provider networks, which are more restrictive than under Parts A and B. Advantage plan costs vary considerably, based on factors such as annual out-of-pocket maximums, monthly premiums, copayments and covered medications. Some Advantage plans cost no more than Part B, while others have a higher premium (to account for drug coverage and others).

Medicare Part D helps cover the cost of prescription drugs. It’s optional and carries a monthly premium.

These privately run plans vary widely in terms of cost, copayments and deductibles and medications covered.

The 2014 national average monthly premium is about $32, although plans can cost up to $175 a month.

Plus, higher-income people pay an additional surcharge. You may not find a plan that covers all your medications, but aim for one that at least covers the most expensive drugs.

I

n relationships, there’s always that one partner who takes cares of the bills, balances the checkbook and handles other financial matters. He or she’s the master at finances, and if you ask the other partner about them, he or she doesn’t have a clue.

While both partners are alive and well, this arrangement might work. But what happens when the financial steward meets an untimely death or disability?

Perhaps the partner who had cared for the finances mentioned in passing the passwords to the accounts, but the other spouse wasn’t paying them any mind. Imagine realizing that you don’t have access to the financial accounts that provide for your living.

There are a number of ways you can prevent this scary scenario. One of the simplest ways would be to record the account listing, website address, username, password and phone number in a notebook. Then place the notebook in a safety deposit box or in your own personal safe.

I even have an application that I use to store my passwords. It’s called

Evernote. Evernote is accessible from the Internet and acts like an electronic notebook.

For those who have many accounts, Evernote is really nice because you can mark the accounts, making information easy to find. For example, say you have a trust fund for your daughter, Amy. You can use “Amy Trust” as a tag on the account. But the catch is that you still have to know the username and password to Evernote and you must record and store them somewhere, where those who may need them one day can access them.

A properly trained IT professional will have more practical ways of helping with these matters. Montrose Museum shares the stories, livelihoods of Utes

M

ontrose is home to one of the most complete collections of Ute Indian artifacts in the nation.

Visitors to the Ute Indian Museum, 17253 Chipeta Road, will find dioramas, changing exhibits and hands-on programs that bring American Indian history and culture to life.

The museum sits in the heart of traditional Ute territory on 8.65 acres that were part of the original homestead owned by Chief Ouray and his wife, Chipeta. Built in 1956, and expanded in 1998, the grounds include the Chief Ouray Memorial Park, the crypt where Chipeta was buried, and a native plants garden. The museum includes gallery space, classrooms and a museum store. Exhibits showcase the work of contemporary artists, craftspeople and performers, and the messages of today’s Ute leaders and historians. The complex also includes shady picnic areas, walking paths and a memorial to the Spanish conquistadors who traveled through the area in 1776.

“The museum is unique, as it is only about the Ute people, not combined with other tribes,” Museum Director CJ Brafford, 55, said. “We have an extensive collection about the Ute people and are one of only two museums about the Utes in Colorado.”

One of the many interesting displays at the museum is a 22-minute video about the Ute bear dance, a tradition common with tribes in Colorado and across the West.

“They all have a bear dance in the spring,” Brafford said. “There is a lot of culture and spiritual nature to it.

It’s very powerful and people enjoy it. It is performed under an arbor, so we created the illusion of actually feeling like you are in the shade of an arbor watching the dance by using an artistic wrap in the room where the video plays.”

There are many things exhibited at the museum, but Brafford’s favorite has a story.

“My favorite piece would have to be a blue wool dress that Chipeta owned,” she said. “I once spoke with an elderly lady who told me that when she was 6 years old, she attended school in Montrose. The Utes were living on the reservation, but would come back to Montrose. One day, Chipeta came with her entourage. The schools were let out so that the children could go see her at the train station. The lady told me that even though she was young at the time, she recognized that blue wool dress as the one that Chipeta wore that day.”

November is National American Indian Heritage Month. On November 9, the museum will celebrate by presenting an Indian film festival called “Standing On Sacred Ground,” featuring four different films. See the details in this month’s Delta/Montrose Beacon Bits on pages 40-41.

The museum will also host an open house on December 6 with free admission, vendors, a silent auction and discounts in the museum store.

There is a variety of ways to get involved with the museum. Members receive free admission to museums and historic sites statewide, a subscription to Colorado Heritage magazine, invitations to exhibit previews and exclusive behind-the-scenes tours, discounts on educational programs and museum store purchases, and more. Volunteers and interns provide essential services and support for the museum.

“The museum helps share the stories and livelihoods of Utes,” Brafford said. “Ute people are still here today.

Often we just think about the past, but for Utes, their heritage is still alive and well.”

In November and December, the Ute Indian Museum is open 9 a.m.4:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

Community Hospital breaks ground on new hospital

inally!” Community Hospital President and CEO Chris Thomas exclaimed.

With that, a broad smile swept across his face and his shoulders noticeably relaxed. The crowd erupted in applause, as many of them were as eager as he to celebrate the official groundbreaking of Community Hospital’s new facility at 2351 G Road, just west of Canyon View Park.

“I cannot begin to express how thrilled we are to be moving forward in building our new hospital,” Thomas said. “To see this long-time dream finally come to fruition is extremely rewarding. One of the things we are most excited about in constructing a new hospital is the opportunity to design it from scratch to not only better meet the needs of patients, but also do so more efficiently.”

The four-story, 130,000-square foot, state-of-the-art facility will feature

44 private patient rooms, outpatient facilities designed specifically for the convenience of the patient, and a more robust emergency department.

“We’ll start delivering babies again in about 18 months, so plan accordingly,” Thomas said.

The remark elicited even greater cheers from the audience.

An entire floor with its own private entrance will be dedicated to labor and delivery.

“Community Hospital has been pushing the envelope to improve health care in our community and to lower the cost to our patients and partners,” Thomas said. “This facility will only enhance our ability to continue these efforts.”

Community Hospital planners, along with Boulder Associates Architects of Boulder, have put considerable thought into what health care will look like in the future. The $49 million facility will represent the next generation of integrated health

care delivery systems. Construction is expected to take about 18 months under the direction of Shaw Construction of Grand Junction and Saunders Construction of Denver.

Indeed, several ’dozers were already moving earth to make way for the hospital’s foundation. Grand Junction Mayor Phyllis Norris made note of the work and its economic benefit to our community.

“Whenever we keep our contractors busy it makes for a better economy,” she said.

Small home modifications can help keep you safe

he Museum of the Mountain West hosted Western Movies Day on Saturday, September 27, honoring movies filmed in Colorado. Stunt people, extras and set decorators answered questions, and several showings of Tom Mix’s movie, “The Great K and A Train Robbery,” enthralled viewers.

The Lake City Shootists reenacted several movie gunfights, including the ones from “Open Range” and “Tombstone.”

Movie buffs strolled the grounds, enjoying the over half-million artifacts on display, along with the reconstructed pioneer cabin and the carriage works, where Jack Dempsey, the Manassa Mauler, used to spar.

Rocky Mountain PBS also premiered its half-hour “Colorado Experience” segment on Dempsey’s rise to fame as a heavyweight boxer.

Western Movie Days is a yearly occurrence. The museum attracts visitors from around the world and is open every day except Sundays, Thanksgiving and Christmas. More information on the museum and events can be found at www.moun tainwestmuseum.com. ■

American Indian Heritage Festival In honor of National Native American Indian Heritage Month, the Ute Indian Museum in Montrose will host the first American Indian Heritage Film Festival at 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on November 9 at the Montrose Pavilion, 1800 Pavilion Drive. This free event will honor and recognize the original people of this land. In this four-part documentary series, native people share ecological wisdom and spiritual reverence while battling a utilitarian view of land and government megaprojects, consumer culture, competing religions, resource extraction and climate change. American Indian vendors and the Ute Indian Museum will sell merchandise in the lobby.

Snow Bash Challenge There are many people in our community who are struggling to remain in their homes because they lack basic support services and/or cannot afford to pay for them. One of the biggest gaps we find is snow removal for seniors and adults with disabilities. The Aging and Disabilities

Resources for Colorado (ADRC) facilitated by Region 10, is kicking off a Snow Bash Challenge. The challenge starts November 1 and runs through March 31. The challenge is open to any individual or group. The ADRC will reward $500 to the individual or group that shovels the most snow.

There is an informative chili dinner from 5:30 p.m.-6:30 p.m. Thursday, November 6 at Region 10, 300 N. Cascade. For details call, 249-2436.

one of the social programs Eileen O’Toole praises so highly are sustainable. Social Security would have been, had it been administered as planned and had the politicians not stolen our money. The improvement in health care is due more to the advancement of medical science than to government programs.

Members of the CCC and WPA had to work for their money, unlike the recipients of welfare today.

Since when is the American Dream about buying stuff? I believe the American Dream is about freedom—freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of assembly, freedom to have a job, freedom to carry a weapon to defend oneself and one’s family, etc.

I would rather pay the fat-cat capitalists with dollars worth 100 cents than have the dollar of today because our president prints large sums of money to pay for social programs.

The reason these programs were voted in is because over half the voters want something for nothing, and don’t care about the consequences, and politicians are more than willing to accommodate them in exchange for votes.

Eileen was wrong when she stated

that the people who lived on farms during the Great Depression were lucky. They were not lucky. They had common sense and vision, just as the “back to the land” homesteaders of today have common sense and vision.

My father, who had a sixth grade education in Germany before he came to the U.S. legally, bought land in this country and built a house on it in 1928, the year I was born, even though he had two homes in the city, which he subsequently lost because the tenants could not pay the rent.

He sensed that a crisis was imminent but he held on to the farm and it got us through the Depression, even though it was hard work, but we never took any government relief.

He also lost his trucking company and had to go to work for the man to whom he sold out to, driving trucks into Chicago from Aurora, Illinois, a distance of 40 miles over gravel roads. My father had more common sense than the so-called educated.

How can Eileen say we are safe when we have the constant threat of terrorism?

I’ll take the good old days anytime, despite the hard work. We never had any trouble sleeping at night without drugs, and didn’t have to worry about gaining weight. ■

We had so many people calling to ask for the punch line we were just answering the phone, “Because she got an F in sex.”  “I liked the article ‘Specters and spirits and spooks, oh my!’ in October 2014. However, the woman in white that was sighted near the Gunnison River would not be called an ‘arrona’ or a ‘delrona.’ The term for such a manifestation is actually ‘La Llorona’ (pronounced lah yo-RO-nah), which in Spanish means: ‘the weeping woman.’

They are also called ‘women in white’ for obvious reasons. This is actually a fairly common type of ghost, a popular folktale in many places next to rivers, and a story I personally enjoy quite a bit. It’s just a little insulting to see the legend referred to with two similarsounding Spanish words that have nothing to do with it.

There is an article about this ghost on Wikipedia under ‘La Llorona,’ if anyone is interested in more information. And thank you for the rest of the article. I like a good ghost story, and I’m definitely going to be checking into some of the other stories you featured.”
