Beacon Life Highlights | Spring Term

We Are Excellent!

A JOYFUL SPRING TERM WAS WONDERFULLY TOPPED BY BEING RATED ‘EXCELLENT’ IN OUR ISI REPORT. WE SAW OUTSTANDING ACADEMIC AND SPORTING ACHIEVEMENTS, AS WELL AS SAYING A FOND FAREWELL TO OUR HEADMASTER.

WELCOME

Headmaster's Farewell The Spring Term has seen my last days travel by quickly at The Beacon, and what a fantastic term it has been. The school has been my home for the last 6 years and I have been extremely fortunate to have enjoyed every single minute. I have thrived on watching our Beacon boys develop and grow into exceptional young men who go on to achieve amazing things. The Teachers at The Beacon are experts in delivering excellence and have been a true inspiration, guiding our boys through their formative years. Throughout the Spring Term, we hosted various Performing Arts events and were delighted to welcome parents on-site to watch their sons perform live. Our Beacon Voices put on quite the show during their Choral Concert and Year 4 were excellent during their Folk Tale performances. World Book Day turned the school into a wonderful world of colour, with boys and staff making a huge effort dressing up as their favourite book characters. Classroom doors were decorated as book covers and the cheer from the Spinney Theatre at our Book Oscars was a joy to hear. In March, as some of you may know, I took to the challenge to hurtle myself through the air at a speed of around 100mph on the world’s longest zip line, located in Wales. It was terrifying yet exhilarating to be suspended over the Penrhyn Quarry. Click here to watch the video if you haven’t already seen it. I would like to take this final opportunity to say another huge thank you to everyone who donated to the Headmaster's Bursary Fund in aid of

this challenge. It was my parting wish to raise funds for brilliant and deserving boys to receive a Beacon education. I am overwhelmed with the extraordinary generosity of our Beacon Community. We have managed to raise over £82,000! If you would like to make a gift towards the Headmaster's Bursary Fund, you can still do so by clicking here. Finally, the icing on the cake for me in my last term at The Beacon was receiving our ISI inspection report. We were thrilled to discover that The Beacon was rated ‘EXCELLENT’ in all areas, and the glowing content of the report really does highlight the excellence and culture of The Beacon. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as we did. Thank you to all our Beacon Community and exceptional boys for making The Beacon such a fantastic school.

Click here to read the report. A heartfelt farewell and huge thank you to everyone who has been part of my incredible Beacon journey - it has been an honour to lead this school and I am proud of everything we have achieved as a community. Simon Detre and I have worked very closely over the years and have built an excellent relationship. I am confident he will sail the ship with determination and kindness throughout the Summer Term and will continue to guide our community into excellent adventures. Have an superb ‘Jubilee Term’ and keep in touch. Best wishes, Will Phelps, Headmaster

Spectacular Science A successful term in Science saw our boys enjoy a host of experiments from volcanic eruptions to generating light using a miniature power station. All boys from Reception to Year 8 have been busy experimenting this term. Reception boys were thrilled to carry out a volcano experiment as part of their dinosaur topic. Each boy had a turn to create an eruption and excitedly waited to see how far the ‘lava’ travelled! Year 1 boys carried out an ice experiment where mini figures were frozen into blocks of ice and our boys were tasked with working out the best way to free them!

Year 3 have been studying forces with a particular look at magnetism. They tested the penetration of different types of magnets and designed and built their own magnet games. Their second topic was on rocks and fossils. They investigated how different types of rocks were formed and made their own wax “rocks”. They also learnt about Mary Anning and where fossils come from and made their own fossils.

Below: Year 4 perform a sound-proofing experiment

Yea 4 boys monitoring their eggs decaying

In Year 4, our boys completed an investigation on sound-proofing, figuring out which materials work effectively to muffle a buzzing sound. Many of the boys decided that combining a few materials worked best. They also investigated teeth health and looked at how teeth can be affected by what we eat or drink. They carried out an experiment placing various liquids into containers - coke, juice, water - and then placed an egg in the solution. Over the course of a week, they carefully monitored the changes in the state of the eggs and drew conclusions as to how various liquids affect our teeth. Our Year 5 boys studied materials in the first half of term, with the final task requiring boys to work in groups to design a bespoke Beacon jacket that

could be worn for Sports matches, at break times and on school trips. As well as deciding on the overall design and colours, they had to specify which materials they would use and give a rationale as to why. Our boys were then challenged to present and ‘sell in’ their designs to the class. They also studied the states of matter and learnt techniques for separating different mixtures. They were taught how to use Bunsen burners and used them to separate rock salt. They then went on to learn about chromatography and used it to find the author of an intriguing note, great detective work boys! Energy and energy transfers was a key topic for our Year 6 boys to study. They enjoyed watching The Beacon’s miniature power station in action, using a steam engine to generate the electricity. The National Grid was represented with models of the latest

pylons which distributed power from Hinkley Point C nuclear power station. Our boys were amazed to see a small amount of light generated! They also studied acids and bases, learning how to make an ‘indicator’ using red cabbage. Year 7 have been focusing on the solar system, investigating the relationship between orbit time and the distance between a planet and a star. The length of the orbit was simulated by a length of string and the planet depicted by a rubber bung. They swung the planets around their heads to work out the average orbit time of each planet. They then changed the size (and mass) of the planet to see what effects on orbit time it could have. Our Year 8 boys had the fascinating task of dissecting chicken wings and a heart this term as they learnt about the skeletal and muscular systems.

Back in Time During the Spring term, our Year 1 and Year 4 boys were transported back in time, with Year 1 learning about the Medieval period and Year 4 learning about the Viking age. Viking Day Our Year 4 boys were enthusiatic to learn about the Vikings and to aid their learning, they enjoyed a fabulous day dressing up in costumes and getting into character whilst engaging in various Viking-related activities. They were shown how to make Viking long ships and writing codes using Viking runes. They also learnt how to make and play a Viking board game.

Medieval Day Our Year 1 boys studied castles throughout the Spring term and to finish off the topic, they experienced a Medieval-themed day.

As the boys returned from breaktime, they were astonished to find the mysterious egg had cracked...

Our boys got into costume as knights, kings and dragons to name a few, and were welcomed into school by their Medieval teachers who had an array of exciting activities planned for them.

On arrival, they were particularly excited to find a large, speckled egg in their classroom, which was thought to be a dragon's egg. They discussed the differences in eggs with their peers to determine whether it was in fact from a dragon. They got involved in decorating biscuits to look like dragon eggs, making swords and creating their very own castles using recycled materials.

Beacon Life World Book Day The Beacon was thriving with creativity on World Book Day, as boys and Teachers got into the spirit of the day. Classroom doors were transformed into famous book jackets, all decorated with colourful artwork created by our Beacon boys. Everyone made a huge effort dressing up as book characters, with some imaginative costumes, from Iron Man, Stick Man to the Gruffalo. Lower and Middle School boys also had the pleasure of taking part in their very own ‘Book Oscars.’ It was a fantastic and fun day had by all. Read the full story and view more images

“My favourite part of the week was encountering Pre-Prep classes walking around the school looking at the decorated class doors and extreme reading displays. Their excitement at discovering yet another book-themed display or unusual reading photo was wonderful.” - Mr Brown, Librarian at The Beacon

Year 8 boys researching recent news articles

BBC Young Reporter We were excited to once again run a BBC Young Reporter competition. Our Library and ICT room transformed into press reporting offices for the day and our Year 8 boys got well and truly stuck into the day ahead. They were presented with journalist passes, newspapers and iPads, which they used for research and to decide upon a topical story to write as journalists, in pairs.

A superb effort from the whole school from Harry Potter to Willy Wonka

Our boys did a fantastic job preparing interview questions and arranging meetings with Teachers, students and external guests under the pressure of a tight deadline.

One of our boys managed to use his contacts to arrange for the Chairman of Middlesex Cricket Club to visit the school for a face-to-face interview. Another pinned down British Hockey player, Darcy Bourne, who took part in a phone interview. The stories were written, submitted, proof-read and published online by the end of the day. Topics included ‘The Queen's Jubilee,’ ‘The Rise in Gas Prices’ and ‘A Day in the Life of The Beacon’. Read their stories and view more images

THE BEACON PODCAST

Throughout the Spring Term, we planned and recorded two brand new podcasts. Our January episode was focused on Wellbeing. We welcomed Mr Sam Privett (Head of Self & Society), Mrs Kim Rowland (Head of Cooking & Nutrition), Mrs Caroline Yolland (School Counsellor) and Lucie Thomas (external Yoga Teacher). The episode covered mindfulness, nutrition, and wellbeing relating to the school and children. There were some useful tips and some great breathing exercises to practise to relieve stress.

Beautiful Bonnets To celebrate Easter approaching, our Early Years boys were tasked with making Easter bonnets at home. There were some fantastic artistic creations, some of which incorporated a Batman bunny, Pikachu, a carrot, an egg

In our February episode, we invited Mr Will Phelps (Headmaster) and Mr Simon Detre (Deputy Head) to join us to discuss the highly debated ‘Single Sex Education’. They spoke about their thoughts on the topic and we finished the episode by saying a farewell to Mr Phelps, welcoming Mr Detre as our Interim Headmaster for the Summer Term, touching on his upcoming ‘Jubilee Term’ plans. Cakes for Ukraine Our Year 7 boys organised and hosted an excellent cake sale at the school in aid of the Humanitarian Crisis currently happening in Ukraine. They raised a staggering amount totalling £2,474 which was donated to Disasters Emergency Committee, a charity whose aim is to raise funds efficiently at times of crisis overseas. Our boys showed excellent initiative in organising this and executed it perfectly. A big well done, boys!

Will’s Zip Line Challenge The Spring term presented a daunting challenge for our Headmaster, Mr Will Phelps. We challenged him to hurtle himself down the world's fastest zip line across the Penrhyn Quarry in Wales. This was in aid of The Headmaster's Bursary Fund, as it was Mr Phelps’ parting wish that deserving boys receive a Beacon education, offering them life-changing opportunities. We are overwhelmed with the extraordinary generosity from our Beacon Community, raising over

£82,000! A huge thank you to everyone who contributed towards this excellent cause. If you would like to donate towards the Headmaster’s Bursary Fund, you can still do so. Every penny raised helps to make a difference. Click here to donate.

Taste the Globe There has been a focus on sustainability in Cooking and Nutrition throughout the Spring Term. Our boys have been exploring plant-based ingredients and discovering recipes that reduce meat consumption. The topic of the term was International Food and Culture, with a focus on sustainability. Our Year 4 boys have been learning how to use ‘bridge and claw’ plus other methods for the first time. They started exploring different flavour combinations, understanding how we can enjoy different flavour profiles. A particular favourite was making Basil Pesto Pasta where our boys used a pestle and mortar for the first time, crushing ingredients including fresh basil picked from our Kitchen Garden at the school. In Year 5, our boys got to grips with transferring knife skills learnt with cutlery knives in Year 4, to perform

the skills with chef knives, as well as learning about sustainable healthy plant-based meals. The highlight for our Year 6 boys was making their own bread and pizza, working individually to complete tasks and selecting their own bespoke toppings. Our boys in Year 7 started to explore spices in more depth, beginning to experiment with different flavours. Next term, this will be continued when they develop their own plant-based curry recipes. Year 8 have moved onto their sustainability unit. They have been looking at ways to increase plant-

based ingredients in some of their favourite dishes, such as Chilli Con Carne, in effort to reduce meat consumption yet still enjoy the meals. They have also learnt the importance of fibre for a healthy digestive system, as well as stabilising blood sugar levels. It was discussed that plantbased proteins are a rich source of fibre, as well as vitamins and minerals.

In Year 5, our boys have got to grips with transferring knife skills learnt with cutlery knives in Year 4, to perform the skills with chef knives.

Considering sustainability, across all years, we have been collecting our food cut-offs and waste produce and delivering them to a local chicken farm on a weekly basis. View our story and gallery of images.

Fond Farewell We were proud to welcome families, Governors and staff to a Farewell Art Exhibition hosted at The Beacon for Mr Phelps, showcasing the outstanding creative talent of our Beacon boys across all Year groups. We celebrated the departure of Mr Will Phelps, Headmaster at The Beacon for 6 years, in sensational style with an Art Exhibition led by Michelle Jackson, our Head of Art. Beacon boy showing off the art

Transforming our Sports Hall into a creative haven, the exhibition showcased the fabulous artistic flair of our Beacon boys from Nursery to Year 8. The space was adorned with colourful paintings, screen prints, spray paintings, drawings, sculptures, structures and many more types of artwork that our boys have been working tirelessly to achieve throughout the Spring Term. Each Year group at the school had a section of the room to deliver the creative projects and methods they have been working on, from Pop Art in Year 5, to Dinosaurs in Early Years, to Graffiti in Year 6. The farewell Art Exhibition was well attended by our whole Beacon Community, and was a great opportunity to give a true expression of the wonderful talent our Beacon boys have developed. Enhanced with mood lighting, ambient music and refreshments, it was a lovely occasion and a glorious way to say a final farewell to Will Phelps before he takes his next step in his career.

Beacon Life Knitting Club During the Spring Term, we launched a Knitting Club at The Beacon. Mr Powell, Deputy Head of Middle School, explained how he enjoyed learning knitting skills during his school years, which subsequently struck an interest in several boys who were keen to enjoy the challenge and learn to knit. Our boys got stuck into their first project after being taught basic knitting terminology and techniques. They set upon their task to complete a knitted dog bed as a leaving present for Merlin (our resident Beacon boy and Mr Phelps’ furry companion). The team of boys worked together to produce an excellent gift, with all the Beacon colours knitted into the bed, which was proudly presented to Mr Phelps during his last week at The Beacon.

Ink Art Year 4 have been exploring the work of artist, Mark Hearld. He created textural collages inspired by the natural world, particularly British flora and fauna, the fox and chicken, hedgerow and songbird. Our boys were challenged with putting their own spin on his inspiring work, using ink to create a variety of different marks on their paper, moving on to use materials such as feathers, straws and sticks to achieve different textures and effects. The results were brilliant!

They delivered fantastic cases with passion and determination, as well as producing well thought-out information posters to promote their selected waxwork figure.

Pre-Prep Art Exhibition Over the half term break, our PrePrep boys worked hard to create some excellent artistic masterpieces to be displayed in our Winterbourn building for everyone to enjoy. They got to work by designing and creating their shoebox castles and dragons using an amazing array of materials and techniques.

SELF AND SOCIETY Our boys created some fantastic 3D artwork and have loved seeing each other's pieces brightening up the Year 1 and Year 2 corridors. A real spectacle for families to enjoy during tours at our Open Morning. Wonderful creations made by our talented Pre-Prep boys

In Self & Society lessons, our boys have been learning about some of the famous stories from the Christian Bible. They discussed the meaning behind them, and how they can apply it to their own life. Our Year 5 boys had great fun recreating Noah’s Ark and took a valuable lesson from this, which is to never judge a book by its cover, and to be confident and brave in the skills you have learnt. Years 6, 7 and 8 have been learning about the ‘Real Game’, which teaches them about money and life skills. They were randomly generated a job with a gross income and were tasked with working out their income tax, savings and how to pay bills. With the money they had left, they were able to choose a luxury item that they could afford. The activity was great fun, teaching our older boys a valuable lesson.

Passion for Sport An exciting Spring Term for our Sports department. Our newly formed basketball team had a victorious start, and outstanding success continued across our football, hockey and cross country teams.

Football We have witnessed a fantastic football season at the school, with most of our teams finishing the term undefeated. Our boys played excellently throughout all their matches against Chesham Prep, Dragon School, Davenies and many more.

Our Reception boys also focused on their football skills this term, building up to playing short matches against each other. Our Little Beacon boys continued to practise their ball skills - catching, kicking, balancing and control.

Our boys played with great sportsmanship and teamwork during all their games, both at home and away, which proved effective as they were victorious in almost all their games. A big well done to all the teams that took part.

Pre-Prep Swimming Our Little Beacons continued to impress us with their water confidence during the Spring Term. It was wonderful to see more boys showing greater independence by getting their faces wet and going under the water. At the end of each session, our boys jumped with joy into the deeper end of the pool which requires such courage and belief. Some boys also progressed to making their way from one side of the pool to the other without the need of a flotation jacket.

Reception boys focused on water confidence and demonstrated an excellent body position and speedboat leg kick on both their front and back. Some boys were able to swim across the width of the pool without any

floatation aids and have started to co-ordinate their arms and legs to swim front crawl and backstroke, which is brilliant for their age. In Year 1, our boys put their arms, legs, body position and breathing together to swim front crawl and backstroke. Some boys manged to show great water confidence by swimming down to the bottom of the deep end to return a sinker, not an easy feat! The oldest boys in Pre-Prep refined the techniques for breaststroke, front crawl and backstroke. Some boys swam lengths to develop their stamina in the water and at the end of term it was wonderful to finish off with some races.

Street Dance Our Year 1 and Year 2 boys were given the opportunity to learn to street dance in the Spring Term. Miss Harvell, Dance Teacher, instructed the boys, teaching them a whole routine to one of their favourite songs.

Folk Tales Our Year 4 boys put on a fantastic show during their Folk Tales performances, acting with maturity and flair, really understanding their characters. All four classes enjoyed learning their own tale and performing in front of a live audience in the Spinney Theatre. Great acting boys!

Our boys thoroughly enjoyed themselves, and took it in their stride. Miss Harvell said "It was lovely to see them all grow in confidence and gain a love for dancing."

House Public Speaking & General Knowledge Final Over the Spring term, we saw two separate House competitions take place. At the beginning of the term, it was the final of the House Public Speaking Challenge, which was contested between successful semi-finalists Portland and Eddystone. The representative speakers from each house gathered in the Spinney Theatre before an audience and our judges, to wrangle with the tricky topic of ‘Should zoos be banned?”. Boys from each House spoke passionately and expressively using evidence and persuasion to support their case. Well done to Eddystone who came out on top, earning an early lead in the term's House competition.

our boys had been taking part in quizzes during their House Assemblies in the lead up to the Final. Teams of three, from Lower School, Middle School and Upper School came together to represent their House. It is safe to say that their general knowledge was very much put to the test during the competition, with picture rounds, mystery Teacher and some fiendish dingbats as the fastest team on the buzzer fought to take the trophy. Congratulations to Cromer who claimed victory and the House trophy!

Their next challenge was the House General Knowledge Competition. Throughout the term, General Knowledge Quiz Participants

Taking a Trip Our Beacon boys excitedly took day trips to the Ashmolean, Chesham Mosque and Ufton Court during the Spring Term. They had wonderful experiences and enjoyed the educational days away from school, intrigued and engaged by external experts.

Visit to the Mosque To continue their learning about Islam in Religious Studies, our Year 4 boys visited Chesham Mosque. They learnt all about the Holy Book, praying 5 times a day and the significance of Mecca, the teachings of Prophet Mohammad as well as the Five Pillars of Islam.

They embraced being Ancient Egyptian detectives for the day.

Ufton Court The Year 5 trip to Ufton Court found our boys immersed in Tudor life! They had a wonderful time playing Tudor games and being taught various Tudor skills such as wattling, spinning wool and making sparks from flint and steel. Our boys also took part in a Tudor Courtroom reenactment, with the jury and judge deciding on suitable punishments for some shocking Tudor crimes. Our boys relished the experience and learnt a lot throughout the day.

Beacon Life Outdoor Learning Outdoor Learning is a key part of Beacon life across all Year groups. Our Little Beacons continue to look forward to their weekly welly walks. They have particularly enjoyed looking for signs of Spring in the warmer weather.

Above and left: Year 3 boys working as a team to create a den

Our Year 3 boys spent an afternoon in the grounds behind The Beacon discovering different ways to make dens, as well as learning the art of 'whittling' and digging for bugs. They had a wonderful time exploring the outside space and seeing how many different bugs they could locate. We started monthly Outdoor Learning sessions using the John Muir Award Scheme for our Year 4 boys. Working in teams and as individuals, they explored, studied and shared the woodland area to begin learning survival skills. Our boys used a combination of mathematical, geographical, and physical skills, which helped them overcome their foes!

Taste Buddies Our Year 3 boys had the pleasure of attending a tasting session, with the aim to introduce them to two different root vegetables, Salsify and Kohlrabi.

Lewis, our Head Chef at The Beacon, spoke to the boys about each vegetable and highlighted ways in which they can be used in cooking and cuisine. Salsify Crips, Salsify & Honey Focaccia, Pickled Kohlrabi and Kohlrabi Croquettes were then offered around for the boys to sample. It was a great session demonstrating different ways vegetables can be enjoyed.

Traffic Tally In Maths lessons, Year 3 learnt how to gather and present data in bar charts. To progress their learning, they were armed with whiteboards and made their way out to the front of the school. Once safely positioned on the path outside, they began to tally cars differing in colour, as well as playing the ‘Waving Game’, whereby they noted down which drivers waved back and which did not. Our boys had great fun learning in this practical way and were excited to review their data once they returned to the classroom.

Scavenger Hunt Our Year 4 boys were challenged to a Scavenger Hunt. Located in the grounds, they were set a variety of tasks at different locations dotted around our woodland area. They had to work as a team to figure out a combination of mathematical, geographical and physical exercises to retrieve the next clue. They did a great job practising their map-reading skills using teamwork and communication.

Beacon Life Group Time Our Little Beacons very much enjoyed their group time. It's a focused session carried out daily to introduce our boys to Maths and Phonics. They were given an array of challenges throughout the Spring Term and, as a result, are now becoming more confident recognising letters. They developed fine motor control and writing skills, working on pencil control and tasks such as threading which are the precursor to writing letters. They made good progress learning their numbers and can arrange objects by size or colour. Little Beacon boy practising writing letters

Safer Internet Day Educating our boys in safe internet usage is of utmost importance at The Beacon. On Safer Internet Day, Years 6 to 8 were given a virtual talk with a company called RAP Foundation (Raising Awareness and Prevention). The content of the talk focused on giving our boys the tools to be safer online, combined with growing up and raising awareness of digital footprints. Mr Porter, our newly appointed Head of Computing and Innovation, has been working with the Year 3 discussing the differences of behaviour online and the importance of being safe on the internet.

Peer Mentors This year, we were excited to reintroduce the Peer Mentor Scheme for our Year 7 boys. We received several amazing applicants for the role, and after a tough interview process, Mr Tenison and Mr Privett carefully selected 10 boys to take part in the scheme. They have been busy mentoring our Lower School boys, including one-toone reading sessions with our Year 4 boys. Well done to Ben S, Dylan R, Edward A, Jo M, Johnny P, Matthew F, Max D, Sebby C, Theo T and Zach S.

EXCELLENT

IN ALL AREAS ISI INSPECTION REPORT 2022

We Are Excellent

In February, we welcomed inspectors from the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) to The Beacon. Not only were we thrilled to be rated ‘excellent’ in all areas, but we were also overwhelmed with the glowing content of the report. As a member of the Independent Association of Prep Schools (IAPS), The Beacon is inspected by the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI).

"The desire to succeed, address challenge and refine practice is innate to the culture of The Beacon; qualities which this report demonstrates." - Nick Baker, Headmaster (Autumn 2022)

THE BEACON BULLETIN | SPRING 2022

ISI is appointed by the Department for Education to inspect independent schools in England. ISI inspected The Beacon under Educational Quality with Focused Compliance (EQI): This inspection looks at the quality of education the school provides and checks a targeted section of policies and practices.

We are excited to share with you our latest ISI Report dated February 2022. It is a glowing report underpinning the ethos and culture of the school, rating us ‘EXCELLENT’ in all areas. Nick Baker, our incoming Headmaster from September 2022 said, "Having inspected many schools myself, to get ‘excellent’ in both categories is anything but a given and only the very best schools secure these judgements; the report identifies the spirit, strengths and character of The Beacon particularly well.

"Pupils’ outstanding understanding and application of skills are enabled by access to specialist facilities and equipment and their teachers’ high levels of knowledge."

"Pupils' excellent social skills are developed through the very many opportunities they are given to work collaboratively in lessons, activities and house competitions."

"Pupils are willing to make choices which take their work well beyond the required limits for the planned task, because they have outstanding attitudes to learning and high levels of self-confidence."

Ours is not a complacent school though, for its boys, staff and governance. The desire to succeed, address challenge and refine practice is innate to the culture of The Beacon; qualities which this report demonstrates." Simon Detre, our Interim Headmaster added, “I am extremely proud of The Beacon Community and especially the staff and boys. To receive these judgements of ‘excellent’ is a wonderful affirmation of all we seek to achieve at The Beacon. As well as being Interim Headmaster, I am the parent of three Beacon boys and so I know it is an excellent school and I am delighted the inspectors agree!” A huge thank you to all our Beacon Community and to our exceptional boys who make The Beacon such a wonderful school.

Beacon Life Little Beacons Our Beacon buses are now adorned with a lovely image of our Little Beacons, to raise awareness of our new Nursery. What a great way to communicate that The Beacon now welcomes 3-4 year old boys within our new inspirational and educational Nursery, by showing happy little faces around the local area. Our Little Beacon boys who feature in the imagery were extremely excited to see their smiley faces on our vehicles. To provide further information about our new Nursery, we also proudly launched our Little Beacons dedicated website, visit littlebeacons.co.uk to check it out!

Spring is in the Air This is our favourite time of year for our Kitchen Garden, watching the spring flowers and fresh produce bloom. Our Kitchen Garden has been flourishing, and our spring flower bed is looking beautiful. Well done to our Year 4 Gardening Club who planted the bulbs earlier this year in a bid to be sustainable and help attract pollinators.

A MESSAGE FROM THE ECO COUNCIL Dear Pupils, Teachers and Parents, Do you want to help us build a better Beacon? Read on to hear about hedgehogs, bees and plants! It is Buddy here from the Eco Council and I have some news for you. We have been busy having meetings as a group to think of ideas to make The Beacon a greener place.

The Beacon Open Morning It was wonderful to once again welcome prospective families to The Beacon at our Open Morning on Friday 18 March, especially as it was such a glorious sunny day. Our Year 8 boys excelled in touring our guests around our school grounds.

Visitors were able to see the school in action, ask questions, meet our Teachers and receive a talk from our incoming Headmaster, Mr Nick Baker. It is a great pleasure to invite new Beacon boys and their families into our Beacon Community.

Virtual Open Evening On Thursday 10 February, we hosted a Virtual Open Evening tailored to our Early Years and Pre-Prep entry to the school. The event consisted of a live welcome from our incoming Headmaster, Nick Baker, plus informative talks with our Director of Admissions, Pippa Pearson, our Head of PrePrep, Ryan Steward and Head of Lower School, Jemima Elcomb. The event finished with a live question and answer session.

We are hoping to create a peaceful wildlife garden with a bug hotel, interesting plants and perhaps a fountain for butterflies, bees and birds. We are asking Teachers to turn off their classroom lights (rather than waiting for the automatic sensor to turn them off) and for Teachers to save paper by not asking pupils to start a new page each lesson. We also really want Teachers not to laminate paper as it is estimated that it will take hundreds (if not thousands) of years for laminated paper to decompose. We have lots of other ideas too! We want to meet Jim (the magnificent Head of Estates team) to see if he can help us. We are also planning to meet Lewis (Head Chef extraordinaire at The Beacon) with some ideas to make our heavenly food even more eco-friendly. We are going to ask the Beacon Parents' Society to see if they can help us to raise funds for our projects - please say yes! Have a nice day. Buddy T, Year 4

OTHER ECO NEWS Under 6 Electric Vehicle To cater for the demand of our under 6 transport service, we were pleased to introduce our brand-new electric vehicle, fully fitted with ISOFIX seats to transport our under 6-yearold boys safely to and from The Beacon.

Boys from Year 7, Year 8 and the Eco Council enjoyed a talk from two external speakers, Alex Miller (Stifel) and Jamie Wise (Cushman & Wakefield), who visited the school to talk about sustainability in business. Alex and Jamie discussed what sustainability is, why it is important, what our impact is, and what businesses are doing to help.
