opi luwak is a type of coffee sold for up to $100 per cup and as high as $600 per pound. The beans from which it is made are collected from the feces of the Palm Civet, also known as the Civet Cat, in the tropical jungles of Southeast Asia. The

Palm Civet is a small, ground-dwelling, nocturnal mammal that chooses to eat only the ripest coffee berries it can find. After eating the berries, all but the beans are digested and within 24 hours the Civet passes the remains. It is believed that the beans undergo a distinctive fermentation in this process that lends to kopi luwak’s special flavors.

The production of kopi luwak began in the early 18th century when the Dutch colonists in the East Indies refused the Natives access to the coffee plantations. In effort to create a coffee drink of their own, the Natives realized that the Civet (known then as the luwak) left whole beans in their droppings. They began to collect their findings and processed the beans like any other coffee.

This innovative and resourceful technique created a coffee so unique and sensational, even the Dutch wanted a taste! This in turn created a new style of coffee production so rare and distinctive that it would ultimately become the most expensive coffee in the world today.

Issue I: Coffee Snob Yes, I am a coffee snob. When traveling, I choose to drive across town and pass 15 Starbucks in order to find that smaller, more hip coffee shop. Don’t get me wrong I have enjoyed my share of Starbucks (um, crème brulee latte, anyone?), especially during college since it was HOUSE more accessible on campus.

CRIB DESIGN My introduction to coffee started when I was fifteen and getting sober. As a teenager getting sober, your only vice becomes coffee, red bull and cigarettes. And I mean a LOT of coffee, red bull and cigarettes. I went to a sober alternative school that allowed us to brew coffee all day and go on smoke breaks often. Back then I had no concept of quality coffee other than thinking it should be equal parts powdered creamer and a 20 second pour of white sugar.

Soon after this came my introduction to the coffee shop. Sober culture revolved around the coffee shop. It was where we went between meetings and to stay out of trouble. On any given day, one could show up and within minutes a crew was formed three tables deep. These coffee shops weren’t Starbucks either. They were inner city, small establishments, where the down-to-earth “cool” types went. Half of the people who worked there were either queer, pierced, tattooed or all of the above. Mind you, this was Texas more than a decade ago, not Portland today. At this point, my coffee tastes had graduated from instant coffee and powdered creamer to the Jumper Cable, which contained concentrated coffee, espresso, heavy whipping cream and simple syrup over ice.

I didn’t really understand the importance of the coffee shop or great coffee until I moved to Portland for college in 2008. Portland was so starkly different than Houston. It became a hobby to find all the local trending spots in every quadrant. Eventually, I found Ristretto on North Williams and went there nearly every day until they closed to work on math homework. Ristretto became my safe spot and I was known as a regular and occasionally was given free drinks. This was also the first time I saw the owners in their own store and I really appreciated this because it was the closest I had ever been to small business entrepreneurs. It was so new to me since in Texas most coffee shops were corporate run, but in Portland the owners made it their business to be visible.

I sat next to other business owners, writers, and artists. I would later realize I was sitting among my types: entrepreneurs and creatives. It began to hit me that my dreams of becoming my own business owner were tangible.

Without realizing it I became one of the people I used to look at and felt so far away from—as if I had absorbed their creativity and wisdom from spending so much time around them.

Now, as I work on this issue of Beacon, I drink my home brewed Stumptown Hair Bender with cream and honey I frothed with my Kuissential Slick Froth 2.0 Electric Milk Frother, a gift from Santa. Drinking coffee has become more than a vice, more than a ritual, more than an accessory. It has become a part of me.

A couple years later, I frequented a place called Café Artiste. It was very 90s (but in a Sex in the City/chic-smart kind of way) and felt like a tropical escape in an old Houston neighborhood. As a 17-year-old drop out, being around a bunch of people doing work on their laptop, I felt smarter just being there. As I was growing up, it was places like this where I took mental notes on how to be an adult.

Coffee scrubs are the latest skin care trend, are sold around the world and are often 100% organic, natural and pure. These scrubs promote healthy skin by exfoliating, cleansing and moisturizing. The formulas are coffee based and commonly paired with oils and sugars or salts. Some add Vitamin E or Shea butter; others add oatmeal or Cacao. The antioxidants and caffeine in these scrubs stimulate blood flow and reduce the appearance of stretch marks, dark spots and scars. My favorite, the NW Nicolai location, occupies the warehouse lobby of Schoolhouse Electric Co. It’s spacious enough to have a conversation above a whisper and has plenty of seating against the one-of-a-kind wall created from recycled file rollers or underneath a massive photo of the St. Johns bridge. Need more room to spread out? Head back to the library area inside Schoolhouse and utilize the extra long library desk equipped with table lamps and floor outlets. Best of all, you can shop for fun office accessories while you’re sipping your cappuccino or taking a break from doing work.

Heart Coffee Roasters Both locations are designed on trend with cool white subway contrasted against rich grays and blacks. Arguably the chicest of Portland coffee shops, Heart’s downtown spot is next to the best new boutiques in town such as Alder & Co, Aesop and Tanner Goods. The Eastside location (also next to a top boutique, Palace) has a spacious floor plan and fun accents like the robust ‘Rubber Plant’ in the corner and the vintage scientific illustrations scattered on the wall.

Water Avenue Coffee This corner spot on the waterfront in the South East industrial area is in a prime location for whatever your lifestyle. Down the street from Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, Water Ave. is just a detour off of the Eastbank Esplanade, neighbors top Portland lunch spots such as Boki Bowl and Clark Lewis and sits just around the corner from notable home décor destinations like Cargo and Grant Michael Industrial. The interior feels nostalgic and approachable, reflecting a classic Portlandia style of reclaimed wood and open shelving while industrial accents and an oversized neon “COFFEE” sign hang above the bar.

Stumptown Coffee Roasters The corner locations on Division and Belmont are quaint with a neighborly feel. Across the river however, is a totally different vibe. The design of the SW Stark Stumptown definetly holds its own as it shares space with Clyde Common and The Ace Hotel. Contrasted against the deep brown picture frame molding that wrapps around the bar and walls is a creamy stone counter and light vaulted ceilings. Stumptown’s downtown location, on SW 3rd, always has a line of both locals and tourists (usually coming from the famous VoodDoo Doughnuts two blocks over), plays loud music from a vintage record player and has some of the best contemporary art rotating in the city.

Fun Fact: Hair Bender got its name after the beauty parlor that once occupied the SE DIvision location.

Barista Each location has a unique identity. Rich blacks and bold moldings define the brass and white marble accented bar at the 1900s inspired Downtown location of Barista III. Warm sage and amber decorate the vintage hunting library aesthetic of the Alberta location and Barista I, in the Pearl, is but a pocket in the lobby corridor of a renovated warehouse.

The youngest café, Barista IV, feels like a perfectly updated home in the Knob Hill neighborhood—daylight soaked, gorgeous wood floors and sweeping leather benches around a hunk of white marble table tops.

Reason to go: Each location is tucked into the urban landscape and has grown effortlessly within the area from which it is surrounded.

Upper Left Roasters Portland’s most recent competitor, Upper Left Roasters, occupies a corner lot at one of the entrances of Ladd’s Addition. This sun soaked atmosphere spills with modern style. The most unique terracotta and white ceramic pendants float above large communal tables, while the bar seating wraps along the windows of the North and West walls. Concrete floors, exposed beams, washed out plains of wood and bright white walls are just a few elements that make this interior stand out.

Serves: Gormet Toasts! Selections are topped with fixins such as Housemade ricotta, lemon olive oil, macadamia nut butter, poached egg and avacados.

See See Motor Coffee Co. Reeking of rubber and bike parts, this coffee shop is a pit stop for motorcycle lovers and espresso enthusiast’s alike! Situated along the bleaker end of Sandy Boulevard, yet within walking distance from Voodoo Doughnuts’ second location, See See’s is a unique reprieve away from Portland’s usual trendiness. Here, you can pair your cold brew with a hotdog fresh from an oven rack you’d expect to find at the 7-eleven. The walls are decked out with helmets displayed proudly in individual cubbies and a large, winding snake mural in black paint(See reminiscent of a tattoo.

Mornings Before the Sun

The 5AM coffee drip of my instant Folgers wakes me, my crooked wrists forced to swirl and pop, stiff memory foam rolls me afloor, I ninja-crawl to the kitchen avoid rousing the tot asleep in bed.

No coffee smell. Nothing like the commercials show.

Because, like my father, who like his father, I drink coffee granules for breakfast.

I hear him saying, “coffee should be brewed on my time.”

I stand, the linoleum feels wet from the cold hours, creaks of my legs, back, shoulders echoes off a wide window still dark, moonlight fading.

My house doesn’t own a kettle, I grab the pot from the cookware set mother gave me in case I had company, preferably a man to pay rent, father my daughter, I’m too selfish to share though.

The sink whistles on cold, the sort a soccer mom does, bursting eardrums and I want to smack her with the pot—

The stove heats the water.

I scoop coffee ashes into a ceramic mug and wait.

Tree pose until water boils in a still-sleeping kitchen with its cups, plates, booze, juicer.

Popping water, tipped into my mug made with Mac for an anniversary glazed in turquoise and canary before a proposal, before I suffocated under well wishes, packing the dog and my mug— I singe my hands, hear my father say I should buy a kettle.

and the pour, coffee grounds alive as they swirl into a black swamp muddied by half-and-half to cut the bitterness.

Waking up before the sun shatters the nighttime quiet before everything wakes, before little feet connected to a little body with long yellow hair says good morning and I have to become

Refueling and Rewarding:Coffee’s Role in the Human Machine

I hear it every day. How this person needs their coffee to function throughout the day, or that person is irritable because they have not “had their morning coffee yet”. I wonder, however, how are all of these people so hopeless without coffee? I have even witnessed a classmate sleep in and miss class because they had run out of coffee and didn’t want to bother going to class without having their cup of this sacred beverage. The question I ask, however, is why?

Why are college students who are actually determined to achieve the goals set for them, needing a supplemental beverage just to carry out the requirements of the day-to-day? Students must balance getting near perfect grades in at times unbelievable demanding courses, working part/full time, maintaining good health and hygiene, and of course, not losing their minds in the process. More times than not, some of these things end up coming up short in the form of failed classes (more stress), having no money to pay for basic needs (even more stress), poor health (dying can be stressful, too), which all adds up to poor mental health.

Students, and not just seasoned-in-thestruggle returning adult students either, are struggling with so much on their plate that at times can just seem ridiculous. A couple years back I calculated how much average free time I would have by the standards of today’s economy/academic structure. I recall having calculated how much free time I had when playing community college basketball, working two jobs amounting to 25 hours a week, taking 12 credits, and barely maintaining my sanity. I ended up totaling about 11 hours a week of free time, which of course fluctuate due to my decisions to swap out sleep for a couple more hours of study time for last minute homework. I ended up living off of coffee every morning, and peanut butter-and-jelly sandwiches every day. At the end of my season, I had high blood pressure (borderline hypertension), had severe loss of sleep, at times sleeping three hours overnight and two hours between classes in our locker room. But hey, I pulled it off right?

It nearly perplexes me when a classmate of mine talks about how she didn’t sleep a whole night just to study for a 20 question quiz. I think to myself how society already holds skepticism in the necessity of some courses as a whole in terms of career pertinence (i.e., a course on human anatomy being a requirement for a theatre major). Consider one 20 question test of my ability to absorb knowledge from a 2 hour lecture, which can just be a professor reading off a PowerPoint that is accessible at home online anyway, and compiled from a textbook that can cost you an arm and leg to even rent. It should be enough to make one wonder what we are doing to ourselves, giving up sleep and overall health just to keep our heads above water.

I just wonder, if all of those dreamers, innovators, and future leaders who are pushing themselves to their limits are not recognizing what simple pleasures the world has. That potent cup of unleaded brain fuel that we call coffee has become another tool to push us past our limits, believe it or not, also can be a relaxing cup of euphoria awaiting you at the end of a long day, or a smooth, warm beverage enjoyed during a lazy Sunday brunch on a chilly afternoon.

So why not revert back to focusing on actually enjoying the life that is available? Well, if we all quit our jobs, we wouldn’t even be able to afford the luxury of a cup of coffee. However, shifting mental focus from deadlines and quotas to what we have actually achieved may be a step forward. Sure a cup of joe is fuel for the everyday adventure, but why not make it a reward for jobs well done? Not to say someone sleeping one day a week, majoring in microbiology, and working two jobs should swap out school and work for a surfboard and a PS4, but how about establishing an actual reward system for ourselves? From the person waking up at 4am to go drive a forklift around all day, to the freshman balancing a full-time classload, let’s get away from operating as machines requiring fuel, and become human beings. We are all hard workers, motivated by goals understood only within ourselves. So why not be rewarded for that hard work with a nice cup?

Café da Manhã

My relationship with coffee started at the early age of 1. According to my mom, I was on my grandma’s lap while she was drinking her afternoon coffee. Being the chubby, gluttonous baby I was, I whined for her to give me some (which I did to most other foods anyone else was eating). She gave me a sip to satisfy my appetite and probably to shut me up as well. I should mention this is in Brazil, where coffee is a huge export and where most people drink coffee at least twice a day. What Brazilians call breakfast is literally translated to Morning Coffee and like the British “tea time”, Brazilians have an entire meal dedicated to afternoon coffee (aptly named Café da Tarde).

In Brazil, most kids start drinking a sweet concoction of coffee, milk, and lots of sugar after they can’t breastfeed anymore or when they stop drinking milk from a bottle. I’m not

completely sure if this has had any impact on the way my body reacts to coffee, but it has definitely affected the way I think about it. I don’t relate to the “don’t talk to me before I’ve had my coffee” quote and I don’t quite see it as a source of energy. Don’t get me wrong, I certainly pretend to need it before class or in the middle of a long road trip, but if I’m being honest with myself, the placebo effect is a hell of a drug! To me, coffee is just a versatile drink perfect for anywhere, anytime, and anyone.

Although I only experienced the Brazilian coffee culture about 2-3 months every year during my childhood, my European dad always kept no fewer than 2 Moka pot/Bialetti espresso makers in the house. One of them always circulating from stovetop to sink continuously and the other larger sized one stashed in the kitchen cabinet waiting for my parents to host

a big dinner party to be put to use.

On top of that, lunches and dinners at restaurants with my parents always end with a double espresso to counteract the wine before driving home.

I like to think of my coffee drinking habits now as a mix of how coffee influenced my childhood. A cappuccino with one sugar packet is my go-to. Sweet enough to remind me of mornings at grandmas mixed with the strong espresso fragrance and flavor that roamed my parents’ house for 20+ years. Coffee is my version of tangible memories and the representation of my cultures combined.
