Deputy “It is a Damn Shame” - 11 Acres of Pristine Arcadia Involved Woodland Bulldozed By Los Angeles County Shooting at

BY TERRY MILLER Peck Road bout two dozen Los Angeles County Park County sheriff’s Sheriff’s Homicide detectives are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding a deputy involved shooting which occurred at Peck Road County Park, 5401 Peck Road in the unincorporated area of Arcadia.

Detectives have learned that deputies were called to the park to investigate a domestic violence incident.

They contacted the victim who said her boyfriend assaulted her. While making contact with the suspect, he became hostile. He held a pit bull dog by a leash in one hand and a knife in his other hand. The suspect advanced the deputies. Fearing for his safety, one deputy fired twice at the suspect, striking him and stopping the attack.

The suspect was transported to a local hospital where he is listed in critical condition.

No deputies were injured. A knife was recovered at the scene. There is no further information available at this time.

deputies approached the entrance below the Santa Anita Dam on Elkins after they discovered four people had climbed trees at about 4am in an effort to prevent the county from cutting down the 11-acre oak woodland north of Arcadia.

Additionally, 5 protestors held paintings of trees and signs of discontent with the county’s plans which are to remove 11 acres of oaks and sycamores.

One of the tree sitters was John Quigley who was perched in a grove of oaks and sycamores being torn down by county Public Works in Arcadia on Wednesday morning.

According to sources Quigley and one other male along with two females were staged in different trees as of Wednesday noon.

BY DOROTHY DENNE I bumped into an old friend this morning. He and I used to volunteer for the same group, so we saw each other several times a week. Then life pulled us in different directions for different reasons and our visits became few and far between.

Lately our lives have changed around again, and we seem to be popping up in the same places on a frequent basis. He commented on that this morning, and I said it is because we both go to the places where the elite meet. That sounded good to us.

Then he laughed and said we better be careful or a rumor might start about our meetings. That sounded good to us too-the rumor that is. We figure we might even pro-

mote it ‘cause, at our age, it would be good for our image.

Old friends are good aren’t they? New ones are important if for no other reason, again at our age, you sometimes need replacements. New friends are good for other reasons too, but old friends are just special. They are like an old pair of slippers; they’re comfortable.

Dr. Dean Ornish said, “Spending time with friends and loved ones is a basic human need, as basic as eating, breathing and sleeping. That need so often goes unfulfilled in our culture. And, it threatens our survival.”

Now I knew that, and I’ve said it often in similar phrasing. He just got his words printed in

a place that pays better.

That’s okay. I’m not starving.

Speaking of starving, did you notice that when Ornish spoke of the basics, he listed eating before breathing and sleeping? Now that man had his priorities straight.

With the start of this new year, I considered looking at my own priorities and, once again, making some resolutions.

Then I considered further. My old habits have brought me this far, so they can’t be all bad.

Good friends, good food, good laughs. What more could I ask? Wait a sec’. Without thinking, I have just listed food in second place. Maybe I am changing in my old age after all.

The Monrovia School Board is not purchasing rings for the Championship MHS Wildcat Football team. Concern was raised by several people when remarks by Monrovia School Board President Ed Gilliland were misinterpreted.

At the city sponsored celebration of the Monrovia High School Wildcat Football CIF Championship, Gilliland made a comment about getting championship rings for each of the members of the team.

These rings cost approximately $300.

The cost for all the rings will come to more than $15,000. Most people felt that this was an inappropriate use of school funds.

As it turns out, Gilliland did not say the district was going to but these rings, but rather that

it would support the fund raising for the purchase of the rings. As a part of that support, the district will dedicate the usual funds its sets aside for championship team recognition (according to district sources this ranges from $300 to $500) to assist in the purchase of the rings.

The support group for the team, the Big M Boosters which is a non-profit, 501(2)3, is spearheading the drive for community support. If you wish to contribute to this fund, tax deductible checks can be sent to Big M Boosters, c/o Coach Ryan Maddox, Monrovia High School, 845 West Colorado Blvd., Monrovia. 91016.

If just 180 people to donate $100 each, every member of the team will be able to have a championship ring.

Portantino Introduces Bill to Increase Early Detection of Breast Cancer Assemblymember Anthony Portantino (DLa Cañada Flintridge) has introduced legislation to ensure that more women have access to mammograms. AB 137 requires California health insurers to provide information to women about when they should start being screened for breast cancer. In addition, the bill eliminates outdated guidelines in the Insurance Code that limits coverage for mammograms for younger women. Instead of basing the need for mammograms only on a woman’s age, AB 137 allows doctors to order diagnostic tests based on a more complete list of risk factors that are part of today’s medical science.

The existing insurance code was written more than 20 years ago and is now outdated. By updating it to allow women to get screened based on their unique medical situation, the result should lead to earlier breast

cancer detection and more effective treatment.

Current law requires insurers to provide a baseline mammogram at age 35 and mammograms every other year beginning at age 40. Annual mammograms begin at age 50. But many women who are in a “high risk” category for breast cancer often develop cancer in their 20’s and 30’s and should be screened at an earlier age.

“I am introducing this bill again this year because it’s an important health measure that will give women more control over their lives and health. It doesn’t create any new benefits or services and the cost to insurers will be minimal. What it will do is give women more information which should lead to preventing needless breast cancer deaths. Last year’s veto has made me more determined than ever to see women’s health care coverage improved,” concluded Portantino.

Monrovia Superintendent Wants More “Family Friendly” Productions at High School

At 4:50 PM Monrovia High school principal issued the following statement: “As Principal of Monrovia High School, and in response to the controversy that has arisen over the production of the play “Rent”, drama teacher Marc Segal and I have agreed to release this joint statement with regard to the future of plays and musicals that will be produced at our school – Monrovia High School We plan to develop a strategy to assist us in making decisions based on a common philosophy for high school drama productions that fosters student interest in the arts commencing in the middle school years and continuing into high school. In the coming days, we will be crafting an agreed upon process that focuses on family-friendly content that would enhance learning and stimulate the intellectual growth of our students. The Monrovia Unified School District and Monrovia High School strive to provide an environment in which all students thrive, and to that end we will corroboratively work together to ensure we achieve our goals.

The Board, District, community and administration have supported the arts at Monrovia High School for many years. Most recently,

the auditorium has received over one million dollars in renovations. These renovations were in an effort to allow for phenomenal plays and musicals for years to come. Marc Segal is a passionate, talented director and our students are fine actors.

The combination of these factors will allow students to grow in their acting abilities.

We will make no further comments on this issue as we wish to return to the business of educating our students and ensuring that they can become contributing members of society.”

Darvin Jackson, Principal Steven Volpe says the school district’s decision to ban the play “is absolutely and utterly ridiculous”. The play is about “understanding each other and how we can live with one another with our differences.”

“Rent is a wonderful play, yes it has some ‘dark scenes’ but so do Shakespeare and countless other plays.” Volpe added that he truly believes that homophobia is playing a significant role in the executive decision to ban RENT. The latest in a series of community outrage on the decision to ban the play RENT from being performed at the High School has caused some in the education business to question Superintendent Linda Wagner’s decision to opt for more ” Family Friendly:” entertainment at the High School Level.

Steven Volpe believes that he would have put the play on at Arcadia High School without the surrounding controversy and prohibitions. “I took my students to a production last year in Fullerton : The play was RENT! It was incredible and the students learned a great deal of the human emotion involved in this difficult and complex issue Volpe asserted.

Monrovia High School drama teacher Marc Segal – who was hoping to stage a somewhat toned down version – met with the district’s superintendent, Linda Wagner to discuss the issue in December and the decision was made not to produce the play.

Segal was not available for comment on Monday.

The first to mention the controversy was a former Pasadena Star News reporter, Nathan McIntyre who now edits a local blog.

ver the last few weeks a controversy has arisen in the community centering on Monrovia High School.

Marc Segal, the school’s drama teacher had proposed staging the high school adaptation of the Broadway musical “Rent” as the Spring Drama Production. The School District said “no.”

A local on line new entity broke the story about the district withholding approval of the production.

The Los Angeles Times even weighed in with an op ed piece last Saturday which brought up icons from Monrovia’ past such as Upton Sinclair, a long time resident who regularly lectured at Monrovia’s Library, and Raymond Chandler who lived here briefly.

On line comments have ranged from questioning whether or not the district was engaging in a form of censorship to if there was rampant homophobia here. And all of this was over a high school production.

Earlier in the week, District Superintendent of Schools, Linda Wagner explained her position. ”When I first came to this school district, I realized that the only consistent venue for students throughout our district to experience live drama was through the high school’s drama department,” she said. “To that end I requested that I be allowed to review any scripts being considered for production.

eral other people in the district and at Monrovia High School, I take full responsibility for this decision,” Wagner explained.

Wagner went on to explain that she felt that all students, not just those in the production, but their younger siblings and the entire community needed to be able to attend the high schools productions and enjoy and appreciate them.” She declined to state her exact objects to this particular play saying that to do so would result in nit picking by the entire community. “My basic response is that this (“Rent”) is not a family friendly production and that our schools need to present something that is appropriate for the entire family,” Wagner explained. “My own opinion of the play is irrelevant and I will not state it.”

She did say that she had had several meetings with various concerned individuals. “People have brought very thoughtful points of view to me,” she said of these meetings. “I am willing to listen and discuss this with them. It will not, however, change my position on this issue.”

Also at the center of this controversy is Monrovia High School’s Principal, Darvin Jackson. On Tuesday Jackson said he had no objection to discussing the issue, but felt that the best way to resolve it was to work with Segal on a joint statement.

Later that day Jackson and Segal released the fol-

A List of Banned or Challenged Books

BY SUSAN MOTANDER The recent controversy over the school district’s withholding approval of a production of the Broadway musical, “Rent” has raised questions of censorship. It was with that in mind that I went in search of true examples of censorship. The following is a list, compiled by the Radciff Publishing Coarse of 20th Century Novels which have been banned or challenged.

Not all of them were banned in this country. For example, Jack London’s The Call of the Wild, was banned in fascist countries prior to WWII. The Nazis also burned Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rise, but then it was also banned in Boston.

There were objections in this country to George Orwell’s Animal Farm and 1984 because of Orwell’s communist leanings.

The vast majority of the challenged or banned books were questioned because of their language or content .

The most common reasons were that the material was too sexually explicit or contained offensive language or was unsuited to any age group. But the questions is how they were judged and who did the judging.

John Stuart Mill wrote of censorship in “On Liberty”: “If all mankind minus one, were of one opinion, and only one person were of the contrary opinion, mankind would be no more justified in silencing that one person, than he, if he had the power, would be justified in silencing mankind.

Were an opinion a personal possession of no value except to the owner; if to be obstructed in the enjoyment of it were simply a private injury, it would make some difference whether the injury was inflicted only on a few persons or on many. But the peculiar evil of silencing the

expression of an opinion is, that it is robbing the human race; posterity as well as the existing generation; those who dissent from the opinion, still more than those who hold it. If the opinion is right, they are deprived of the opportunity of exchanging error for truth: if wrong, they lose, what is almost as great a benefit, the clearer perception and livelier impression of truth, produced by its collision with error.”

Sierra Madre Street Sign Replacement Begins On January 12, Public Works staff began replacement of existing street name signs. The new signs meet current federal requirement for font size and reflectivity.

Two crews are working to replace the signs, and will be doing so in East to West swaths across the city. The replacement process is ex-

pected to take several weeks.

Staff has discovered errors in some of the signs while unboxing them from the supplier. Correction and installation of those signs will be the final phase of the project.

The old signs are available for purchase at a cost of $78 each. Arrangements for purchase may be made

by contacting City Hall (626355-7135) and speaking to James Carlson (ext. 803) or Liz Cowan (ext. 802). Reservation of specific signs is on a first come, first served basis.

Persons who have already paid for and reserved signs will be contacted by Public Works Staff when their signs are available.

n October, The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens announced that it would be receiving a gift of important works by Andy Warhol from the estate of Los Angeles gallery director Robert Shapazian, who died earlier that year. One of the pieces is Small Crushed Campbell’s Soup Can (Beef Noodle), a painting made in 1962 as a unique, early variant of the famous series. Another is Brillo Box, constructed in 1964 at the time of the artist’s first sculpture exhibition; and rounding out the gift is a group of nine unlicensed copies of Brillo Box commissioned in 1990 by art collector and international museum director Pontus Hultén (1924–2006).

The objects have recently arrived and are being installed in the gallery of mid20th century art in the Virginia Steele Scott Galleries of American Art. “Robert was absolutely brilliant and extremely generous,” said Jessica Todd Smith, Virginia Steele Scott Chief Curator of American Art at The Huntington. “His gift is of great significance to us on many levels.”

Shapazian, a respected scholar and founding director of Gagosian Gallery in Beverly Hills, was introduced to The Huntington through the Sam Francis Foundation, which donated Francis’ monumental painting Free Floating Clouds to The Huntington’s collections in 2009. Shapazian also was the director of Lapis Press in Venice, Calif., founded by Francis to publish limited editions of artists’ books.

“The Shapazian gift of these pivotal works of American art is transformative,” said Steven S. Koblik, president of The Huntington. “It makes it possible for us to dramatically strengthen the narrative we have begun in the new American art galleries.”

The Huntington’s collection of American art, established in 1979 with a gift of 50 paintings from the Virginia Steele Scott Foundation, has grown to comprise more than 10,000 objects spanning the colonial period to the mid-20th century. The gallery space for American art at The Huntington re-

cently doubled with a major expansion and reinstallation that opened in 2009.

John Murdoch, the Hannah and Russel Kully Director of the Art Collections at The Huntington, said, “I think Robert appreciated what is distinctive about The Huntington. He was very impressed with our new American galleries, and with the way in which they, together with our library and our gardens, seemed to make a context in which the surprise and delight of Warhol’s creativity could be recaptured.”

Soup Cans and the Birth of Pop Art One of the leading American artists of the 20th century, Andy Warhol (1928–1987) was a painter, printer, and filmmaker whose

name has become synonymous with the Pop Art movement that began in the 1960s. He was trained as a commercial artist and began painting in earnest around 1961—at first using the popular iconography of advertisements and comic books in a style that was loosely related to the gestural painting of the abstract expressionists, with splashes and drips. But his style changed radically when he adopted Campbell Soup cans as his subject.

Smith points out how the Soup Can paintings are transitional. “They marked a change in Warhol’s work from a style that was personal and painterly to one that expressed the bright colors and crisper edges of what came to characterize Pop Art,” she said. “Also, they are painstakingly handmade—not printed.”

Campbell’s Soup was an icon of stability in the early 1960s—the label design had not changed in more than 50 years, and the price of a can had remained the same for almost

40 years. The can evoked a comfortable familiarity and represented a common denominator of experience across every age and class in the country. Yet, Warhol’s Soup Can paintings intended to provoke anxiety about value. What at first might appear as a crass joke is, at the same time, a sophisticated and serious artistic statement.

Painted early in 1962, Small Crushed Campbell’s Soup Can (Beef Noodle), is a rare black-background variant of the famous series of 32 paintings that debuted at Ferus Gallery in Los Angeles that year—an exhibition that is associated with the birth of the Pop Art movement.

Anchoring the gallery in which the Warhol objects are being installed is the painting Free Floating Clouds by Sam Francis and works by Robert Motherwell, Helen Frankenthaler, and California artists including Ed Ruscha and Karl Benjamin.

Brillo Boxes Warhol’s first sculpture exhibition was in the spring of 1964 at the Stable Gallery in New York, featuring several series of box constructions, including Del Monte Peach Halves, Mott’s Apple Juice, Kellogg’s Cornflakes, and Brillo.

Warhol’s 1964 Brillo boxes, including the one coming to The Huntington, were made of silkscreened ink and house paint on plywood and measure 17 by 17 by 14 inches. In 1990, Pontus Hultén, who had worked closely with Warhol in 1968 on the artist’s first retrospective, commissioned about 100 further versions of the boxes—nine of which have come to The Huntington.

While they were made without the artist’s license, they are included in Warhol’s catalogue raisonné. They differ from the original 1964 boxes only slightly, most obviously in size (they are 17 ½ by 14 ¼ by 17 ¼ inches).

“The group of Pontus Hultén boxes is fascinating in its own right,” said Smith.

“They lie somewhere between a fake and a conceptual art piece on the nature of authenticity—which, of course, was what Warhol was all about.”

HAIR: Vibrant, Raucous and Irreverent Classic Anthem of the Age of Aquarius Revisited at Pantages Theatre in Hollywood through January 23

BY BERNARD CAUGHEY Once again this is The Age of Aquarius and “Hair” doesn’t show one single strand of gray hair despite its 44 years of age.

Born in New York’s Greenwich Village in 1967, this American Tribal LoveRock Musical is vibrant, noisy, raucous, irreverent, fun and full of wonderful music during its stay at the Pantages Theater until Jan. 23.

I knew it was going to be one of “those nights” when a man well into his 60s, squeezing past me to get to his seat, leaned in, looked me in the eye and with a gleeful smirk, muttered “Hippie.” I knew what he meant.

Likewise, the audience knew it was going to be one of “those nights” – one of those special nights -- from the moment Phyre Hawkins (Dionne), wearing gaudy flower-child garb, opened with the show’s theme song “Aquarius.” The haunting refrain: “When the moon is in the Seventh House…. And Jupiter aligns with Mars….

Then peace will guide the planets.... And love will steer the stars.”

Before you could say “Good Morning Starshine,” the theater was alive with the sound of actors. Members of the cast ran, danced and sang up and down the aisles, jumping on seats and into the laps of some in the audience, bumping and grinding, rubbing bald heads, throwing yellow and white daisies, handing out “Burn Your Draft Card” leaflets and doing other outrageous things. Such fun.

The activists entered the pristine 11 acre property early Wednesday morning, after the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors gave the go-ahead to cut down the 100 year old trees, activist Cameron Stone said.

Another protestor had taped a message to her back -Michael Antonovich which read “Antonovich approves desecration of woodland habitat. Antonovich and your bureaucracy = DEAD WOOD.” Glen Owens who is a planning commissioner in Monrovia and the Big Santa Anita Historical Society said: “They’ve destroyed the oaks but left behind an acorn that will give rise to the greatest environmental coalition in Los Angeles County History.

Owens and scores of others who have been trying to save the trees for months believe that the deception was a major factor on the part of the county of Los Angeles about the whole process. Owens admits it is a complex issue but feels there was no communication between county and local district/populous. Owens added “If you don’t like what you saw today, hug your local councilmember.”

“The City of Arcadia eventually got it…Don Penman sent a letter but it didn’t help _ I think the local council had its hands tied” Owens said he felt the county had no intention of listening to residents or the city. Referring to the County Public works, Owens and many other en-

vironmentalists said that calls were never returned and that they feel they were deliberately deceived by Los Angeles county government – in particular by public works.

When asked about the removal of the oak trees, Tony Bell, Supervisor Michael Antonovich’s spokesman, said “Thirty days ago, it was Supervisor Antonovich who demanded that the Department of Public Works exhaust every option and re-examine every part of the Environmental Impact Report to look for another option.”

He said that the last thing the Supervisor wanted to do was to remove the Oak trees.

“The Supervisor wrote the Old Tree Preservation Ordinance for the County; the removal of the trees is the last things he wants. It pains us to do that.”

Bell said that the state of California gave the County no option. The county was ordered by the state to move forward with the relocation of the debris or face decertification of the damn. The removal of the debris means the clearing of the property.

“This (decertification of the Dam) would force both Sierra Madre and Arcadia to import its drinking water at incredible cost.”

The property was purchased in the 1950 for exactly this purpose. The damn was built in the 1920s and has never been seismically retrofitted.

With the current budget constraints, retrofitting the damn is cost prohibitive. Keeping active is the only alternative.

“It pains us to do this,” said Bell, “but the State has given L.A. County Public Works no option.”

“The only positive side is that the area will be replanted,” Bell explained. “We want to link it to the trail system... At least it is something.”

Longden Student Repeats as Geography Bee Champ Fifth grader Jason Chen has been declared the winner of the Longden Elementary School Geography Bee for the second year in a row.

Jason competed against 13 other finalists to answer questions provided by the National Geographic Society. Questions covered United States, world

geography, and physical geography. Jason will now complete one more test in hopes of continuing to the National Geographic Bee competition. He is a student in Mrs. Selder’s class.

During a spirited assembly, cheered on by their classmates, the finalists competed through three rounds of questions

until the two finalists went head to head in a single elimination round. For the first time in recent history, the Longden Geography Bee saw two sets of siblings in competition with each other--fourth grade twins, Pauline and Patric Young, and Yi-Jie Chien competing against her fifth grade brother, Samuel.

This event was the culmination of competition that started with close to 60 fourth through sixth grade students attempting the Geography Bee Preliminary Test. The 14 finalists received the highest scores on that test. 1500 People Attend Rally and Parade for MHS CIF Champions

A huge party was held in honor of The Monrovia Wildcats CIF Mid Valley Championship on Thursday evening. It seemed like the whole city turned out to meet and greet their new heroes.

About 1500 people took over Library Park where city dignitaries honored Monrovia High School’s football team for bringing home its first ever CIF-Southern Section championship.

In their 10th finals appearance December, the Wildcats knocked out Whittier Christian with a final score of 38-8.

While players like star Nick Bueno pretended to run off with the CIF Trophy by putting it under his sweatshirt, other team mates tried the same…without success. The plaque was too big and it was all in good fun anyway.

The excitement of the night was not lost on the players, parents and the cheerleaders when it came time for the playing of the national anthem. There were some very real tears of

joy rolling down some players’ and coaches’ cheeks.

Well known local television personality, Ralph Walker, who was the first to call for a parade for post victory in December, was visibly moved by the team’s efforts and the support the city has shown for their CIF Champs. “It’s incredible!..What a night…

Mayor Mary Ann Lutz proclaimed the night “Monrovia Wildcat Day” and school board President Ed Gililland asked residents to donate to buy the team CIF championship rings.

“This really is the best Christmas present Monrovia has ever had” one parent said as the team got off the sleigh and entered the park for the ceremony.

Temple City Man Arrested for Vehicular Manslaughter A 19-year-old Temple City man was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and felony DUI after he allegedly caused a freeway accident that killed two Rosemead and Alhambra residents

early Sunday morning.

Alex Michael Gary was taken to a hospital with major injuries after California Highway Patrol investigators say he collided with several cars at 4:12 a.m. on the westbound 10

Freeway.

The collision occurred in the westbound lanes near Via Verde in San Dimas, according to a CHP news release.

SBA Announces Grant Funding to Increase Contracting Opportunities for Small Businesses under New Pilot Program The U.S. Small Business Administration is accepting grant funding proposals from eligible and well-established national organizations interested in providing training, guidance, counseling, mentoring and procurement assistance to small businesses in teaming arrangements, which may be in the form of a joint venture or prime and subcontractor relationship, under its new Small Business Teaming Pilot program.

The Small Business Teaming Pilot program was established by Congress under the Small Business Jobs Act of 2010. Under this new program, the SBA expects to make 10-to-20 grant awards in the range of $250,000-$500,000 totaling up to $5,000,000 for fiscal year 2011.

“The Small Business Jobs Act provides critical resources to help small businesses continue to drive

economic recovery and create jobs,” said SBA Administrator Karen Mills. “The teaming pilot program will help put contract dollars into the hands of small businesses, create job opportunities through the teaming arrangements, help drive innovation and promote economic growth for our nation’s economy.”

To be eligible for these grant awards, an applicant must: * be a private, nonprofit or for-profit entity; * have been in existence continually for the past three years; * have experience dealing with issues relating to small business on a national level; and * demonstrate that it has the capacity to provide assistance to small businesses.

Applicant organizations selected for these awards must leverage the funding received by

the SBA by working in conjunction with SBA’s district offices and other federal, state, local and tribal government small business development programs, including: Procurement Technical Assistance Centers, SBA resource partners such as SCORE, Small Business Development Centers, Women’s Business Centers, Veterans Business Outreach Centers, 7(j) technical assistance providers, universities, other institutions of higher education and private organizations such as chambers of commerce and trade and industry groups and associations.

Sierra Madre Police Issue Bulletin for Suspect in EVG Credit Card Fraud Mayor Mosca Announces Secret Service Now Assisting with Investigation Sierra Madre’s credit card fraud/ Identity theft associated with EVG gas station and possibly one other business has now caught the attention of the Secret Service in addition to other police agencies.

The City of Sierra Madre is utilizing multiple sources in an effort to locate the suspect(s) involved in what is possibly the largest identity fraud case in Sierra Madre’s history.

Mayor Joe Mosca and Sierra Madre Police Chief Diaz spoke at a press conference held at 7am Thursday in front of City and said they are looking for three men in possible connection to the crimes which now amount to over $82,182 in credit card fraud. EVG owner Eugeny Yakimenko is the prime suspect along with his business partners whose names Chief Diaz was not at liberty to disclose.

The banks involved include: Chase (76 victims); Wells Fargo (49); Bank of America (56); Bank of the West (18); American Express (14) and Citibank (9).

According to the records thus far, 78% are Sierra Madre residents. The largest loss was $3,782.

The crimes date back to at least June 2010 and authorities are asking anyone who may have purchased gas in Sierra Madre at EVG to carefully check their bank records and report ant discrepancies.

“I am pleased to announce that the US Secret Service has graciously agreed to assign agents to jointly investigate this case with the Sierra Madre Police Department,” Mosca said at the Press Conference.

EVG’s owner, Yakimenko, closed the gas station opposite the Post Office suddenly over the Christmas holiday and has not been seen since.

SMPD released a low quality image taken from an ATM security camera of a suspect who withdrew money from one victim’s bank in Montebello on Dec. 30, 2010. It was unclear if the person in the blurry image is Eugeny Yakimenko.

Thus far more than 280 people have come forward filing reports of

fraud as a result of using their credit cards in Sierra Madre.

Filing Closing for Monrovia City Elections

BY SUSAN MOTANDER Filing will close for the April Monrovia Municipal Elections this week. The official close for filing is 5:30 p.m. on Friday, January 14. If for some reason, one of the incumbents does not file for his or her office, the filing period will be extended to next Wednesday, January 19.

The chance of this happening is slight as two of the three incumbents have already filed their nominating papers and the third has an appointment to do so today, Thursday.

Mayor Mary Ann Lutz was the first and only person to file for the office of Mayor, which here in Monrovia, unlike many other local communities, is a directly elected position. No one else has even pulled the necessary paperwork to file for this office.

Eight individuals have taken out the necessary papers to file for the two city council seats. Appointed

Incumbent Council Member Becky Shevlin has already returned her completed paperwork with the required 20 nominating signatures. Also have turned in his required paperwork is Jason Cosylion, a first time candidate. Challengers Joe Espinosa and Chris Ziegler along with Incumbent Tom Adams, have appointments with Alice Atkins to turn in their nominating papers and other required documents prior to Friday’s deadline. Of the three other potential candidates, two, Donna Baker and Anthony Alexandrovich had indicated to Atkins that they will not be filing for the office.

If no one else files for the position of mayor, Lutz will be deemed to have been elected. With the filing of several candidates for City Council, there will, however be an election on Tuesday, April 12.

Best Children’s Hospital in the Western U.S. Celebrates Grand Opening of New Outpatient Center The best children’s hospital in the western United States is now offering services in the San Gabriel Valley.

Children’s Hospital Los Angeles will host grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremonies for its new outpatient services center in Arcadia on Monday, Jan. 17 from 6 to 8 p.m. to formally celebrate the arrival of the clinical expertise of its doctors, nurses and staff in the region. A variety of community leaders including Rep. David Dreier (R-Claremont) and the Arcadia City Council are invited to attend the event.

The outpatient center is known as Children’s Hospital Los Angeles  Arcadia and is located at 468 E. Santa Clara St. A variety of outpatient services are offered at the center, including gastroenterology, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, pulmonology, and otolaryngology (ear, nose and throat). Pediatric surgeons are also available at the center for office visits with patients and families.

Laboratory and radiological services are also offered and more specialty services will be added in the near future.

The Children’s Hospital clinicians began seeing their first patients at the center in November. The project is a collaboration between the hospital and the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles Medi-

our beliefs.” They went on to say: ‘If Jared Loughner does have a definable political ideology it is that of a far Left anarchist. Loughner is a mentally disturbed young man who sought his ideological fulfillment from the Communist Manifesto hardly the Bible of the Tea Party movement. He posted videos of flag burning on his YouTube channel - again, antics more consistent with Blame America First liberals, not the tea party movement.”

Life Remembered

William “Bill” Earl Faith April 9, 1920 - January 4, 2011

Bill Faith was born April 9, 1920 in Sargent, Nebraska — a small farming community near the center of the state. He was the oldest of the three children of William Earl Faith and Lela Marie Lundy. His younger sister, Elaine Faith Hague (Frank) died in 2008. His brother, Lyle Harry Faith (Charlotte Sachs) lives in Claremont.

Early on the family moved to the nearby town of Scotia, where Bill’s father operated a bakery. Right after graduating from Scotia High School he accompanied his family to Southern California, fully intending to hitchhike back home and enroll at the University of Nebraska as soon as the family was settled. Instead, he was persuaded by his uncle to remain in Los Angeles and attend Occidental College. He paid his college expenses by working full time each summer and part time jobs during the school year. While at Oxy Bill met Ruth Knudson, and they were married on August 23, 1942. Ruth passed away October 11, 2000.

Upon graduation he taught physical education at Gage Junior High School.

While working full time he attended night classes at Loyola University School of Law, earning a JD (Juris Doctor) degree in four years.

After practicing law for a short time in Pasadena, Bill relocated his office to Monrovia and went into practice with Alvin Hahn. When his partner retired, Bill formed another firm that became Faith, Weiss & Holland. In 1967 he joined with Jules Sandford and Emmett Patten to become Patten, Faith & Sandford from which he recently retired after more than fifty five years of practicing law.

Bill is survived by three children, five grand children and ten great grand children, his brother, two nieces, Kristine and Karey, and two nephews, Mark and Brad Hague.

Eldest son Eric and his wife, Martha, live in Monrovia. Their son Jeremy, his wife Niva and their three sons, Benjamin, Jacob and

Zachary are in nearby Encino. Their son, Colin, lives with his wife Jennifer and their son, Caden, in Tolland, Connecticut.

Bill and Ruth’s son, John Randall (Randy) and his wife, Carol, live in West Covina. Their son, Jonathan, lives near Portland, Oregon with his children Sahalee McFarland and Tarn Faith. Their son, Nathaniel, his wife, Lisa, and their children, Darrion and Alanna reside in San Diego. Their daughter, Amanda, lives in Chino Hills with her children, Tristen and Dakoda.

Bill and Ruth’s daughter, Shelley, lives in Grand Junction, Colorado.

Bill was an active and beloved member in his community, serving on the board (and often as the chair) of many local organizations.

These included United Way, Lions Club, Jaycees, YMCA, Foothill Bar Association and the Monrovia Rotary Club.

He was for many years an active Elder in the Monrovia Presbyterian Church where he sang a beautiful tenor in the choir.

Bill and Ruth loved to travel, and it is difficult to recall very many places they have not visited. When their children were younger, several weeks each summer were spent hauling a small travel trailer to virtually every state in the country. Later, in the company of friends, they traveled extensively throughout the world. In between trips they hosted several foreign exchange students — two of whom still correspond with “dad.” In later years Bill organized trips that included as many children and grand children as were available.

In groups of ten to fourteen the family traveled to Alaska, Russia, Scandinavia, Greece, South America, China and through the Panama Canal.

These were always times of reunion and adventure.

A memorial service celebrating Bill’s life will be held at 2:30 on Sunday, January 30, 2011 at Monrovia First Presbyterian Church (corner of Myrtle and Foothill). Bill Faith - The End of An Era

BY SUSAN MOTANDER With the passing of Bill Faith, an era has ended. He was the last name partner of Patten, Faith and Sandford, the Monrovia law firm that was an absolute institution here.

But Bill, the person was a great deal more. He was a kind, patient, soft spoken man who dealt with his many long term clients with quiet efficiency. He was a conscientious representative and advocate for his clients, but he did so gently and with humor.

For example, my parents talked to Bill about the advisability of updating their wills after my father’s mother died. Bill reviewed his copy of their wills and called my mother back saying, “Isn’t your youngest, Susie almost 30?” My mother confirmed this and Bill told her it was past time to update their estate documents as their wills provided for their minor children. With Bill’s help they did just that.

He remained my mother’s attorney until his retirement.

Few realized that this dapper and relatively diminutive person was actually a jock. In fact his college career was partially funded with an athletic scholarship.

He was even a member of the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity (and most of the major jocks at Oxy were ATOs). Remember he put himself through law school at night by working as a P.E. teacher. I can’t image that gentle man corralling junior high athletes into sports.

His son Eric told me a very funny story about how his father’s family first moved to the Los Angeles area. At that time it was possible to “rent” a seat on a new car being driven from the factories to the west coast for sale.

And so the whole family did that for about $10 each.

Bill planned to hitchhike back to Nebraska for college, but an uncle “introduced” him to a coach at Oxy who seduced him into staying here.

At Oxy, he

met and married his beloved Ruth to whom he had been married for 58 years when she died. He settled here, eventually moving to Monrovia. And we are the luckier for it. He was a positive force in this community.

He gave his adopted hometown his very best, contributing to local charities and supporting the community in every way possible. The law firm of Patten, Faith and Sandford aided many of the nonprofit organizations in town, always pro bono and helped set up many of them. He passed that tradition of service on to his son Eric, who served several terms on the Monrovia City Council, as Mayor and member of the Planning Commission. That concept of service to others was something Eric gained from his father. That and finding a bride at Oxy. It is a tribute to Bill that Eric has followed in his father’s footsteps. I know that his children were something of which Bill was very proud, and justifiably so.

This town will miss Bill Faith. The final demise of Patten Faith and Sandford is only one aspect of the end of an era. In talking with several people whose own tributes follow, there was a reoccurring theme: There just aren’t people like that anymore. I assume they meant people like Bill and Jules Sandford who always made certain that they gave back to the community which supported them. I hope that there are more like Bill and Jules and that we just need to look a little harder for them and encourage them.

Tributes to Bill Faith from throughout the community: “Bill was a big part of what makes Monrovia such a special place to live. For decades, in his law practice and community service, he has supported, promoted and encouraged those around him. Bill was truly a friend to all.

He will be missed by me, his family and the entire community.” Judge Patrick J. Hegarty, a part of Patten Faith and Sandford from 1972 until he was elected to the bench and took office in 1995.

“Bill Faith was very important to me. I’ve known him since 1987 when I first started practicing law in this town. We had several cases with him. When I was I young lawyer he could have taken advantage of me because of my inexperience, but he never did. He treated everybody with a high degree of courtesy and respect. It was lawyers like him who shaped a then young lawyer like me. His attitude and demeanor never changed. He always took the high road. Now attorneys regularly send notices regarding verbal agreements.

Bill never needed to; his word was his bond. You don’t see that anymore. He was a hell of a lawyer; he was a great advocate.”

“Bill Faith practiced law for 50 years. He joined Emmett Patten and Jules Sandford in 1967 and the law firm of Patten, Faith & Sandford was born. Like his law partner of 40 years, Jules Sandford, Bill Faith loved his family, the practice of law, golf, travel and giving back to the community. He was a gentleman and a gentle man with a wry and mischievous sense of humor. With Bill’s passing and the passing of Emmett Patten and Jules Sandford before him comes the end of an era.” - Lorraine Grindstaff a member of the law firm, Patten, Faith and Sandford.

“Bill was one of the smartest kindest most gentle men I ever knew. I loved to hear him talk about his travels. Bill l loved his country, his state, his city, and mostly his family and it was evident in everything he did. He served in a number of leadership capacities through the years always with a rational, caring, soft-spoken voice. He was a man of great integrity and moral fiber and many of us have been influenced by his leadership and presence. We sense a

great loss in our church family.

“Monrovia has lost another of the true icons of the community, Bill Faith. I never met anyone who didn’t like Bill; has was a very successful attorney, member of the Monrovia Rotary Club, a past president of that club and one of my friends, one of my best friends. I always held Bill up as one of my idols, someone I wanted to be a little more like. I admired Bill for continuing to work past the age where many don’t yet seemed to travel more and perhaps work less, always having his work to come home to. I always thought perhaps I could do the same and it truly saddens me to keep losing the people I admire the most. Monrovia could improve if more of us were just a little more like Bill Faith ; he will be missed.” - Monrovia Council Member Tom Adams “My first thought on hearing of Bill’s death was “The end of an era;” the second was of Marge Platt. The sorrow of losing a second love is something that I have avoided. Never-the-less I understand how it must be for Marge.

My original thought was of the relationship among three men and between them and their community. Bill, Emmett, and Jules were three very different men but they shared a lot. The founders of Patten, Faith and Sandford were political liberals, who loved golf, gambling and investment, their families, their community and the practice of law.

The practice they created was unique. Each attorney was responsible for his/her own time and could live as far away as Big Bear if they wished. They would eat lunch together every day.

They made it possible for their secretaries to bring their babies up in the office. They celebrated birthdays of attorneys and staff.

Although a few attorneys and staff members came and went over the years, most made PF&S a lifetime commitment.

Office Manager, Sally Montgomery went to work for the firm at the age of 19 and left in her 60s Bill was the dandy, the charmer who was adored by his clients, the husband, parent and grandparent who was admired by his family and by hosts of Monrovians. Bill is gone, Emmett & Jules are gone, Patten Faith and Sandford is gone. It is the end of an era.” - Betty Sandford, widow of Jules Sandford, law partner of Bill Faith.

POLICE BLOTTERS Arcadia PD

For the period of Sunday, January 2, through Saturday, January 8, the Police Department responded to 907 calls for service of which 129 required formal investigations. The following is a summary report of the major incidents handled by the Department during this period.

Sunday, January 2: Shortly before 3:00 a.m., a traffic stop was conducted at Genoa and Santa Anita when a car was seen swerving in the roadway. An intoxicated 24-year-old male Hispanic driver was arrested for DUI. Two auto burglaries were reported at the 24 Hour Fitness parking structure located at 125 North First. Unknown suspect(s) smashed car windows and stole a wallet from one vehicle between 8:00 a.m. and 9:09 a.m., and took a purse from another vehicle between 10:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.

Monday, January 3: Around 1:13 p.m., units responded to 1201 South Baldwin regarding a disturbance between two motorists.

The victim was sitting in his parked vehicle talking on his cell phone when a motorist, possibly looking for a parking spot, stopped behind the victim’s vehicle and began honking. The suspect finally drove away but returned a short time later. The victim made a finger gesture, and this angered the suspect who then exited his vehicle and kicked the victim’s car door.

A private person’s arrest was made, and a 39-year-old male Asian was taken into custody for vandalism.

Two private persons’ arrests were made at the Hollister store located at Westfield Mall around 4:11 p.m. A 15-year-old male Vietnamese and a 16-year-old male Hispanic removed sensor tags from shirts and left the store without making payment.

They were arrested for petty theft and were later cited and released.

Tuesday, January 4: Around 5:16 a.m., units were dispatched to Westfield Mall regarding a suspicious subject who was possibly intoxicated. The man was located but he refused to cooperate with officers’ commands and physically resisted. The 24-year-old Asian was taken to the ground, handcuffed, and arrested for obstructing/resisting.

A residential burglary occurred in the 800 block of

West Huntington between 10:45 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. Unknown suspect(s) entered the home by unknown means, ransacked rooms, and stole jewelry.

Wednesday, January 5: Officers responded to Bare Escentuals located at Westfield Mall around 7:56 p.m. in reference to a battery and robbery incident.

During an argument, the exboyfriend pushed the victim against a wall and grabbed her cell phone from her hand. An area search for the 23-year-old Hispanic was conducted, but he was not located.

Shortly before 8:00 p.m., units were dispatched to REI regarding a grand theft.

Around 4:30 p.m. a male suspect purchased three bike computers and paid cash for the items. Six minutes later, he re-entered the store and wanted to return the items for a full refund; however, he claimed to have lost his receipt within that brief period. The cashier gave him the refund since he had just purchased the items. Believing this is suspicious, the store manager sent an email to other REI stores regarding the suspect. She was later notified that the same suspect had tried to return several bike computers at the Santa Monica location by using the receipt that was generated from the Arcadia store.

The manager conducted an inventory search and discovered about $967 in bike computers were stolen. The suspect was subsequently arrested by Santa Monica PD. Thursday, January 6: Between 9:00 a.m. on January 5 and 11:45 a.m. on January 6, an auto burglary occurred in the 1000 block of Fairview. Unknown suspect(s) pried open a car window in order to unlock the doors. The suspect(s) then stole four tires and rims for a loss of about $1,050.

APD officers assisted a regional task force in the arrest of seven men in Monrovia for possession of several hundred pounds of marijuana.

Friday, January 7: Around 2:35 p.m., a victim came to the station to file a fraud report. Unknown suspect(s) obtained the victim’s debit card information by unknown means and made six fraudulent charges totaling $1400.

Units responded to the intersection of Santa Anita and Live Oak around 3:34 p.m. in reference to a driver

of a white van causing a disturbance with other motorists. When officers located the van and tried the conduct a traffic stop at Mayflower and Larkfield, the suspect driver fled the scene. A pursuit ensued; however, due to traffic conditions and speed, the pursuit was terminated.

Saturday, January 8: Shortly after 6:30 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 1700 block of South Baldwin regarding a suspicious circumstance report. The victim advised that he purchased a cell phone on Craigslist and later discovered that the phone was reported as lost or stolen. The suspect is a 16-year-old male Asian.

Loss prevention personnel from Macy’s advised that they had detained a woman for theft around 8:40 a.m.

The suspect was seen concealing merchandise in her purse while in a fitting room and left the store without paying for the items. A private person’s arrest was made, and the 26-yearold suspect was taken into custody for petty theft and $255 in merchandise was recovered.

Monriva PD

During the last seven day period, the Police Department handled 480 service events, resulting in 100 investigations. Following are the last week’s highlighted issues and events: Medical Assist On December 30 at 8:04 a.m., officers responded to a business in the 700 block of East Los Angeles regarding an employee who had fallen off the roof. Officers requested paramedics while en route to the location. On arrival, the subject was stable and breathing. Apparently, the 70-year-old maintenance worker was climbing a ladder up to the roof, lost his footing and fell to the ground.

Death Report On December 30 at 11:04 a.m., a resident in the 300 block of South Madison reported that her neighbor’s front door was open, the dogs were barking, and no one would answer the door. Officers responded and found an elderly female subject on the floor and unresponsive. The Coroner’s Office was contacted since the deceased did not have any known family.

Vehicle Burglary On December 30 at 1:24 p.m., an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 400 block of North Canyon regarding a vehicle burglary.

The victim told the officer she went out to her vehicle and saw the driver’s side door window broken out and her GPS was missing. No suspects were seen or heard.

The Investigation is continuing.

Grand Theft On December 30 at 4:16 p.m., an officer went to a business in the 300 block of West Huntington. The reporting party told the officer two male subjects, one with a goatee, gray polo and black jacket, and the other wearing a beanie, went into the store.

One subject distracted the employee, while the other looked at some items in a case. The two subjects met by the case and made their way out the front door. They got into a black Audi with no plates and left eastbound. The loss was two iPods and an iPad. The Investigation is continuing.

Driving Under the Influence Checkpoint On December 30, the Monrovia Police Department held a Driving Under the Influence Checkpoint in the 300 block of West Huntington. During the event, there was one subject arrested for driving under the influence, two citations issued for unlicensed drivers, two cited for expired licenses, and one cited for no license in possession. One driver was cited for possession of marijuana.

On December 31 at 11:36 p.m., an officer was driving west on Cypress when he noticed a suspicious lone male subject in a vehicle. The officer requested a computer check on the license plate of a black Honda, which returned stolen out of West Covina. During the investigation, it was discovered that the suspect had methamphetamine in the vehicle and he had been trying to sell it to a nearby resident. The suspect was arrested and taken into custody.

Driving Under the Influence - Suspect Arrested On January 1 at 2:57 a.m., an officer on patrol in the area of Huntington and Mayflower noticed a speeding vehicle and conducted a traffic stop. During the investigation, it was determined that the driver was under the influence of alcohol. The subject was arrested.

Driving Under the Influence / Evading - Suspect Arrested On January 1 at 8:47 p.m., an officer was flagged down by an employee of a business in the 400 block of West Foothill. The employee pointed out a vehicle that was backing out of a parking stall. The officer ordered the driver to stop his vehicle, but the driver sped out of the parking lot. The officer believed a crime may have just occurred and went after the vehicle. The driver turned off the vehicle headlights and sped up to approximately 70 miles per hour on a residential street. The driver failed to stop for a stop sign and then collided into three parked vehicles. The driver was ordered out of the vehicle, and during the investigation, the driver stated that he fled because he had been drinking.

The driver was arrested for driving under the influence and was also charged with

evading. No injuries were reported.

Trespassing / Mental Evaluation / Restraining Order Issued On January 3 at 10:18 a.m., a 16-year-old male subject was waiting outside of a teenage girl’s house. The girl had broken up with the boy, but he would not leave her front porch. The boy had been ordered off the property by officers earlier that day. He was arrested for trespassing and brought to the Monrovia Police Department, where he was released on a citation to his mother.

At 12:35 p.m., the boy had returned to the girl’s house again and refused to leave without seeing the girl. The boy made statements to officers that he was depressed.

He was taken into custody and taken to a hospital for mental evaluation. The girl’s mother obtained a restraining order against the boy.

Stolen Vehicle Recovered - Four Suspects Arrested On January 3 at 10:25 a.m., an observant neighbor in the 800 block of West Olive watched several young people remove a license plate from a vehicle and replace it with paper plates.

The subjects drove off in the vehicle, but returned shortly.

The witness called police, who responded. The witness was able to identify all the suspects, including a suspect who walked away prior to officers arriving. The vehicle had been stolen out of Azusa and the owner was unaware it had been taken. All four suspects were arrested.

Vandalism On January 5 at 1:08 a.m., officers drove by the high school and noticed the sign in front of the school was spray painted with letters written in black spray paint.

11:03 PM- Passenger in Possession of Alcohol in Vehicle, Foothill Blvd. and Michillinda Ave. An officer stopped a motorist for a Vehicle Code violation and found that the 18 year old driver from Pasadena and his passenger from Monrovia both had an opened container of an alcoholic beverage. Both were given a citation and a written promise to appear in court.

Tuesday, January 4th: 1:43 AM- Battery with Serious Bodily Injury, 70 W. Sierra Madre Blvd, Buccaneer bar. Officers were called to Buccaneer Bar in regards to a fight between two men. Thursday, January 6th: 9:14 AM- Receiving/ Concealing Stolen Property, Montecito Ave and Baldwin Ave. An officer stopped a motorist for a Vehicle Code violation and found that the registration tag belonged on a different vehicle. The driver admitted he had purchased the stolen from an unknown person. The officer arrested the 47-year old Sierra Madre resident for Receiving Stolen Property and took him to Pasadena Police Department for booking.

10:43 AM- Disorderly Conduct/Drunk in Public, 10 Kersting Ct. Officers found an intoxicated woman in public who was unable to care for herself. Officers arrested the 52 year old Sierra Madre resident and took her to the Pasadena Police Department jail for booking.

11:24 PM- DUI Alcohol/ Drugs, Mariposa parking lot.

An officer stopped a motorist for a Vehicle Code violation and determined that the driver, a Sierra Madre resident, was under the influence of alcohol. The officer arrested the 28-year old woman and took her to the Pasadena Police Department for booking.

Saturday, January 8th: 1:04 AM- Disorderly Conduct/Drunk in Public, 300 W. Sierra Madre Blvd.

An officer stopped a man walking in the middle of the street and found that he was intoxicated. The officer arrested the 19-year old Altadena resident and took him to jail for booking. During that time the officer found a fraudulent driver’s license in the suspect’s possession. The officer cited the suspect for possession of a false California driver’s license and booked him for public intoxication.
