but also to render aid for a city of 2000 men women and children in Kessab who were forcibly removed from their homes in March. The Armenian-populated town is located in northwest Syria. By SHEL SEGAL A 24-year resident living in a somewhat quiet area of south Glendale, Marty Buttwinick has had just one goal in life: to make a living making music. And 50 years later the music is still happening for Buttwinick. “I’ve been playing music ever since I was 5. I started on piano,” Buttwinick said. “My brother played a little piano, so I started on classical piano. Then I was interested in clarinet, so I picked up clarinet, but I still played

piano.” But at that time there was a revolution going on in music. And Buttwinick wanted to be at its forefront. “Then the 60s rolled along and I heard there was rock music and I got a guitar,” he said. “So I got in my first band.” That band, he said, was known as the “Knights of Sound.” But it wasn’t without its problems. “But we couldn’t find a bass player who was a musician,” said Buttwinick, who added he started that Please see page 7

Draft EIR for Scholl Canyon landfill expansion available in Glendale The City of Glendale (City), acting as the Lead Agency, has determined that an Environmental Impact Report (EIR) is required to address potential impacts from implementation of the Scholl Canyon Landfill Expansion (proposed project). The Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County (Sanitation Districts), acting on behalf of the City, will serve as the primary project contact during the review of the Draft EIR pursuant to the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA). The proposed project is located in Los Angeles County at 3001 Scholl Canyon Road, Glendale, California, 91206. Regional access to the landfill is from the Ventura Freeway (State Route 134) at the Figueroa Street exit. Public access is only from Scholl Canyon Road. The project site consists of a total of 535 acres, 440 acres of which are designated for landfill operations and 95 acres of which are designated for related operations. The 440-acre operation area includes 314 acres of active area and 126 acres of inactive area. The specific objectives of the proposed project are to: • Continue to provide a waste disposal option that has been proven to be environmentally sound and cost effective at the currently permitted rate of 3,400 tons per day. • Continue waste diversion programs that are critically important for landfill users to achieve state-mandated diversion requirements • Allow the City to maximize the use of a local
