Emerges in California Philharmonic's Finale at Arboretum is Bittersweet Racist Graffiti Cases in NW Pasadena during Public Meeting Saturday A community meeting held in home team’s locker room at the Rose Bowl Saturday tried to address and answer questions about two reports of racist graffiti in Northwest Pasadena during the past 2 weeks. The first incident occurred Aug. 8, when vandals tagged 20 pieces of property including cars. Some new evidence emerged one of two racist graffiti incidents in Pasadena Saturday when Police Chief Phillip Sanchez announced that they had surveillance video of one of the suspected vandals although admittedly the tape is “grainy” making an ID difficult. Santa Anita’s Autumn Meet figures to get off to a fast start as opening day, Friday, Sept. 30, has also been proclaimed “Arcadia Day” at the Great Race Place. All Arcadians attending will be granted free Club House admission with proof of residency throughout the afternoon. Gilbert and Sullivan’s “Yeomen of the Guard” dazzles at Sierra Madre Playhouse Also known as The Merryman and His Maid BY FRAN SYVERSON When the curtain closes on “Yeomen of the Guard” your senses will still be afire from the magnificent performance of this Gilbert and Sullivan operetta! Throughout, the stage glows with the richly hued costumes of brocades and laces. The lively tunes will haunt you with their trademark G&S staccato beat. And the many contrivances of several romances may leave you slightly dazed. “Yeomen of the Guard” is set in the Tower of London in Shakespearean times. Colonel Fairfax, falsely accused of a crime, is about to be executed. Viewing that prospect with a certain amount of glee is Wilfred Shadbolt, the executioner. But the colonel (Joseph Garate) deplores that a greedy nephew will get all his wherewithal if there is no wife, so he hatches a scheme to be married for the short hour before his beheading. Thus—no inheritance to the scheming nephew, and no husband for the bride, since she’ll become an instant widow, and well-paid for her efforts. If only it were so simple! Instead we have a jail break, an impersonation, conspiracies, flirtations and true love. As director Eugene J. Hutchins describes it, this is a “romantic adventure story.” While it has & Gilbert and SulInsert Address Phone Number livan’s touches of satire and humor, the mood is a slightly darker tale than most of theirs, including even heartbreak. Still, many consider Insert Sale Dates this to be their finest musical score, outpacing the more familiar “H.M.S. Pinafore,” “The Mikado,” and “Pirates of Penzance.” From the first notes of the overture, the excellent musical offerings are solidly supported by the keyboard work of Brian Asher Alhadeff, music director and accompanist. No orchestra needed—Alhadeff’s accompaniment plus the cast’s rol-
licking melodies fill the Playhouse. And even should you not be able to catch every word of the fast-moving dialogue and the typical Gilbert and Sullivan ditties, you’ll sense no lack in following the topsy-turvy plot. Kudos to every member of the cast for their interpretations of the characters! They move easily across the fine line between opposing emotions—love and hope, despair and loss. Michelle Caravia is luscious to behold and a delight to hear as she portrays Elsie Maynard, a street singer who is lured into the shortlived “marriage.” But first she appears teamed with Jack Point, a street jester played by Matthew Welch. It is no exaggeration to say that when he takes the stage, he owns it. In his black-and-white checkered jester’s suit, Welch is charming, ingratiating, sensitively serious—and as rubber-jointed and limber as a Gumby toy. He captures our hearts. Katherine Trimble as Phoebe Meryll displays her frustration at not finding a husband, and also segues easily into a conniving seductress. Luis Marez Ordaz is the rousting executioner Shadbolt, and also a patsy when succumbing to Phoebe’s romantic enticements. Glenn Fernandez thoroughly enjoys his impersonation of the doomed man and prospective husband. From the swashbuckling young yeomen (Jay Parker and Steve Kubick) to the prim Tower housekeeper Dame Carruthers (Michelle Holmes), the cast works well, many of them playing dual roles. Completing the roster are Ryan Reithmeier, Maria Elena Altany, and Tara Waldschmidt. Christine Soldate is the operetta’s producer, and also did the poster art and, with
Ward Calaway, the program design and layout. Brenda Goldstein is stage manager. Credit the ceiling-high gray stone Towers of London to set designer Edward Haynes, Jr., and set construction as well as props to Jennifer Scott. Shon LeBlanc did the period costumes with their meticulous detail. Hutchins and Mario Rocha handle the choreography for the yeomen’s swordplay. Lighting is by Wes Chew, and sound by Barry Schwam. Lia Pearson did the production photography, and Philip Sokoloff the publicity. People with sight or hearing limitations will be delighted to know of special accommodations for them at the performance on Friday, Aug. 26. The play will be both ASL interpreted for hearing-impaired persons, and audio-described for blind patrons. For this program the accessibility outreach coordinator is Maria Zuccarello. Teri Grossman is the audio describer, and Sheri Greerer and Mona Jean Cedar the ASL interpreters. “Yeomen of the Guard” will continue at the Sierra Madre Playhouse weekends through Sept. 24. Curtain time is 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and 2:30 p.m. for Sunday matinees. Admission is $25 for all seats for this musical. The Sierra Madre Playhouse is located at 87 W. Neighborhood Meeting Regarding a Proposed Senior Assisted Living Facility A neighborhood meeting to receive public input for a proposed senior assisted living facility will be held on Wednesday, September 7, 2011 at 6:30 p.m. at the Sierra Madre Recreation Center (Sierra Madre Room) located at 611 E. Sierra Madre Blvd. The proposed project site is a 1.84 acre property located 245 W. Sierra Madre Blvd., at northwest corner of Sierra
Madre Boulevard and Hermosa Avenue (across the street from City Hall). The new facility will include a 58,000 square foot, two-story building that can accommodate up to 96 residents. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. at which time members of the public are invited to view the proposed plans and talk with representatives of the developer and city staff.

Here are updates on a few of the projects: Gold Line Foothill Extension > A $486 million contract has been awarded to two firms to build the Metro Gold Line Foothill Extension. > Preliminary construction has already begun on a bridge over the I-210 Freeway on the first phase of the project. > The 11.4-mile extension will travel from Sierra Madre Villa in Pasadena east with stops in Arcadia, Duarte, Irwindale, Monrovia and two in Azusa. MONROVIA Monrovia School Board Election David Crabtree My experience, skills and interest indicate a strong correlation with Monrovia Unified School District’s expectations for a School Board Member: I have 19 years as an administrator at both the elementary and middle school levels and 15 years experience as a successful teacher at elementary, middle, high school and adult school. I have effective and diverse experience in education, including administration, teaching, curriculum writing, grant writing and staff development. I have been an educator in public schools for the past 34 years. I hold an Administrative Services Credential and a California Teaching credential that allows me to teach; Chemistry, General Science, Physical Education, as well as Computer Concepts and Applications. Recognizing the need for administrators to have a strong knowledge base in school finance I completed a Certificate in School Business Management from USC in January of 2004. I offer proven abilities that I believe qualify me to be an asset to Monrovia Unified School District. My wife, Kelly, I have lived in the Monrovia School’s attendance zone for the past 11 years. TEMPLE CITY SCHOOL BOARD Temple City School Board Emile Cales I am a retired teacher having taught for 33 years I taught elementary education. I have been substituting since retiring. I am running because I want the temple City Unified School district to be great like it should be and once was. There was a time when the teachers and the community worked together as one. I want that once more. We need the right leadership and right now I am concerned that we are lacking in this area. I want to be part of the so-
lution to this problem. Kenneth Knollenberg I am a lifelong resident of Temple City and when through the Temple City school system. I went on to Cal Poly, Pomona and earned a degree in Civil Engineering. I worked for the Navy in Long Beach where my extensive experience included environmental issues, government procurement, management, contract negotiations, bid process, budget development and monitor, program management, engineering recruiting and training, and cost control. I serviced for over 35 years with a credit union on the Supervisory committee and as a Board member. I have attended the school board meeting for the pasted 3 years. One of the major concerns is why there seem to be an increase in turnover of Administrators. Other concerns would be on budget planning, insuring that we maintain our high test scores, support our school sites, and develop long term strategies of the District. During my tenure, our district has won several Distinguished School Awards, made the 10 Highest Performing District, and 2 of our schools scored above 900 API. I am especially proud of our accomplishments given that TCUSD faced funding cuts of over $6 million resulting in many difficult board decisions dealing with balancing the needs of our kids while maintaining financial solvency. There is much to be done and more challenges lay ahead as we strive for excellence. With your vote, I will continue supporting our vision of “creating the model citizens of tomorrow today” and help each student achieve their greatest potential. Once every lifetime a professional coach and trainer has a chance to work with a great champion! Bob Wieland is not only a physical champion but a spiritual, emotional, and psychological champion as well. Bob lost his legs in Viet Nam trying to save another man’s life. Bob was a medic. His friend died and Bob’s legs were blown off from the hips down. Bob became an inspiration to millions by taking this devastating tragedy and making it into a feat of achievement never done by any man or woman in the last 100 years! He walked across the United States on his knuckles. Bob became a weightlifting champion first. He pressed 507 lbs at age 33. He went on to break other weightlifting records but became restless for something more than lifting weights. While I was
training Olympic athletes at Ambassador College in 1978, Bob came to me and said “Is there anything that you think that I could do besides the benchpress?” Bob, being a spiritual person, said “Let’s pray and ask God to give us newfound direction to inspire veterans, the handicapped, the homeless, and those seeking inspiration in their daily lives. Bob arrived at 6:15AM in the morning on the Ambassador College Track in Pasadena in 1980. We thought with God’s direction that it would be interesting to see him walk on his knuckles around the beautiful world class Ambassador College Track. The track being only 296 yards around, it seemed to Bob not that great of a challenge. He jumped out of his wheelchair and bunched up his hand so he would be on his knuckles while
his stumps were on the ground and he proceeded to walk around the track. During the walk Bob’s knuckles became bloody, his stumps begin to show some blood also. He finished the walk in less than 13 minutes. As he came back to our original starting position he was all smiles. He said, “I think we’ve found something here. I want to walk from California to the White House on my knuckles.” Sure enough, he did it in three years, eight months and twenty-one days -well over 6 millions steps right into President Reagan’s Oval Office where the president had tears in his eyes receiving this incredible champion in 1986.. He was awarded a medal for courage by the president. Bob has never stopped looking for more opportunities to glorify his Creator. Bob and Harry Sneider who both live in Arcadia have talked and prayed about various physical challenges that he can perform. Currently he’s on the road on a hand-powered bike. He has recently climbed the Mescalero Mountains at 7000 ft in New Mexico on his way to Washington, DC. He started his journey in Los Angeles on July 3. His goal is to cross the United States on this hand powered bicycle TWICE for a new world record for 65 year old men. You can follow Bob and his ride at www.DreamRide3.com. Capital Public Art Funds of $125,000 Help Fund the Project of Temporary Sculptures in Pasadena The city of Pasadena is taking some of its artistic vision to the streets by installing temporary works of local, regional and national artists in Pasadena’s great outdoors. From August 24 to September 1, the four colorful, vibrant and unique works of art will be installed at various locations around the city as part of its new Rotating Public Art Exhibition Program. “Convergence,” a gleaming red, bronze geometric sculpture; or “Timeless Joy,” a hummingbird made of Harley Davidson and bicycle parts. Depending on your route to work you might walk by “Diversity,” profiles of three ethnically diverse women who share the same colors to indicate their connection to each other and the human race, or marvel at “Handstand,” a larger-thanlife male figure mounted atop a nine-foot pole, upside down! The first piece is actually in the process of installation (at Washington and Glen). The Washington and Marengo piece is scheduled for in-
stallation Thursday. The other two pieces are scheduled for next week. They are all to be installed during the day. The Rotating Public Art Exhibition Program was created to enliven neighborhoods with public art in unusual places and was approved by City Council last year with $125,000 in funding from the Capital Public Art Fund. A panel comprised of neighborhood representatives from all Council districts and public art professionals selected artworks for nine sites throughout the City from responses to a Request for Proposals distributed last fall. The program calls for placement of both existing artwork as well as three site specific installations. Artworks are to remain in place for approximately 18 months, before a new set replaces them. The exhibitions activate unusual locations such as traffic islands and medians, transforming small, often unnoticed areas into exciting and stimulating destinations
for visitors and residents. The first four locations and artworks include: --“Convergence” by Jon Seeman at the traffic island of Washington Boulevard and Glen Avenue --“Timeless Joy” by LT Mustardseed at the southwest corner of Washington Boulevard and Marengo Avenue --“Diversity” by Cecilia Lueza at the traffic median east of intersection of Sierra Madre Boulevard and New York Drive --“Handstand” by Daniel Stern at the northwest corner of Sunset Avenue and Mountain Street The inaugural exhibition will span 18 months and will be followed by ongoing 18-month long displays of changing artworks. Final lighting and landscape components will be in place at the artwork dedication celebration on October 14, during ArtNight Pasadena. Community participation was an essential component of the Rotating Public Art Exhibition Program. After a series of community
meetings hosted in 2010 by the city’s Cultural Affairs Office to help launch the program, City Council members nominated district representatives to join public art professionals in selecting artworks for each of nine sites. “I’m excited to see new artwork in unexpected places. If these sculptures stimulate conversation about public art in our community, then we will have met one of our goals,” said Rochelle Branch, Cultural Affairs manager. Cultural Affairs encourages residents to stay tuned for the appearance of five more artworks in the next few months that range from “Planting a Garden,” five panels depicting native flowers with glowing interior LED lights, to “EnSconce’d,” a raised platform that highlights Pasadena’s intersection between art and science, and more. BY VICTOR BUELL There is a new tapas place in Old Monrovia (SENA, 409 S. Myrtle Ave, Monrovia, 91016, across from the Krikorian Theater). If you discover Sena by accident you might think it’s just a small wine bar, but you would be mistaken. Sena does draw a lively and fun crowd, serving from a fully stocked bar, with extensive wines and beer, but I recommend you not overlook the lunch and dinner menu. The space is much bigger than a first glance reveals, with a back patio area set for a comfortable, laid-back experience. For a moderately inexpensive meal we found it well worth trying, and then returning again and again. Nothing on the lunch menu exceeds $10, but dinner goes to $11. We sampled cevi-
che, fresh guacamole, and three varieties of tacos. “Okay,” was my first thought as I looked at the menu… “there is nothing really unusual here.” The number of items is rather minimalist as well, which turns out to be a feature— GM Damon Thompson explained that they strive to do just a few things, and do each of them very well. As the food began to arrive I became more and more of a fan of that philosophy. What impressed me most is the care that goes into each item, and the abundance of fresh and substantial ingredients. We started with a light ceviche of white fish and shrimp, served with thick and crispy tortilla chips made on the premises, and very fresh, very creamy and very chunky
guacamole. There is no “mix” in this dip, it is all house-made and real, and we could taste the difference. On the tacos, we disagreed a little. Brad’s favorite was the Seared Filet Mignon with seven spice rub, topped with cheddar, fresh avocado, cilantro, cabbage and red onion. The beef was as tender, juicy and flavorful as you’d expect from filet, and the combination worked well—no other ingredient upstaged the beef in any way. I liked it, but I really liked—and am craving as I write this—the Braised Short-Rib Tacos. They have the deep, complex, and savory flavor of having been cooked carefully for hours. Our third selection was the Spicy Pulled Pork Tacos. They too are delicious, but we
hit them last and were a little too full to really appreciate them. A final note: they are only mildly spicy, so no need to be shy. We did manage to save room for coffee and “Kona Crust Cheesecake.” I am not sure this is available every day, but look for it on the board. It’s a New York style recipe, dense and creamy, not whipped, with Kona coffee baked into the graham cracker crust. Dessert is made on the premises too. Sena does a terrific job, and the service is friendly and on the spot. The whole staff waits on everyone as a team. My secret hope is that this place doesn’t get too popular, because I intend to go back and I don’t want to have to wait for my table.

Remember the first day of school every year. In my family that meant new clothes all the way down to underwear and shoes. Of course there were new school supplies depended on what we needed for that grade, pencils for lower grades along with rulers and paper, binders and everything up to slide rules in high school (that should date me). Foothill Unity Center process the same for the school aged children of its client families. The Center normally supplies food and information for low income families and individuals. It’s Back to School Distribution is a special event which tries to put these young people on the same footing as their classmates. More than 1800 young people from kindergarten through high school, approximately the same number as last year signed up in advance for the distribution on August 18. As always, the students are provided which what they need to start out the year. There were even new features this year. Perhaps one of the “extras” the young people, especially the littler ones, was the result of the collaboration between ITT Systems in Monrovia and JPL of La Canada/Flintridge which has the youngsters looking at Space Exploration in a different way. There were 3-D glasses so they could view Mars in a new way and a slightly smaller version of the Mars Rover which rolled over Martian rocks (consisting of the backs
of the kids, so they could have an idea of how the Rover works. As usual, the actual school supplies and clothes were distributed at the Top ‘O the Stretch. The large open room at the west end of the Main building at Santa Anita Race Track. The track supplies the facility and the large outdoor area below it for the distribution and provides support including electric carts to help move some of the clients and fans to keep the indoor room slightly cooler. The students received age appropriate supplies, back packs (in which to store everything) and clothes (uniforms for the younger grade students, street clothes for those in high school. Everything was provided including socks, underwear and, thanks to the Tzu Chi Buddhist Compassion Relief Foundation, even a voucher for shoes. Citrus College Cosmetology students gave haircuts and manicures to any who wanted them. That was just the start. State Senators and Assembly members provided younger students with coloring books regarding the Constitution and state government (for older students and parents there were state resource guides and information). Local care givers and hospitals provided information and basic first aid supplies. There was even child level information about finances and savings and vouchers for hearing tests. Walgreens provided basic personal hygiene supplies. There was also face painting

and temporary tattoos. And the upstairs was just the start. Outdoors, under the trees, there were vision screening care of Western University while USC School of Dentistry provided dental checks. Monrovia Reads gave each child a book while the local libraries (especially Monrovia) handed out information regarding library locations and hours. Various companies had other games and information for the students and their families. There was an entire area set aside for Paint ‘N Play where the young people could paint their own choice of ceramic figures. Here they could really let their creativity run wild with great colors and where their ideas were the only limits on what they created. And there was the food. Panda Restaurant Group (Panda Inn and Panda Express) provided egg rolls for everyone and a chance to win other items. Robin’s Wood fire BBQ in Pasadena had corn on the cob, dripping in butter sauce, for all the youngsters. McDonald’s provided one of their new healthy snacks, apple slices for dipping, and everywhere there was lots of cool water. As they kids staggered out they were carrying all their new supplies, clothes and more. Their parents were armed with information and phone numbers for resources. As they returned to the parking lot, many of the slightly more eager students munched on their corn on the cob.

Of Verona then performed their new sound of a mix of indie sensibility with a dash a classical rock band, and a sprinkle of electro pop with lead singer Mandi Perkins piercing voice. No one saw Allen Stone coming when he brought down the house with his soulful music stylings. Growing up in Washington as the son of a preacher, Stone quickly transitioned into soul with his introduction to soul music with artists such as Marvin Gaye and Aretha Franklin. Stone’s music consists of a soul-filled voice that brings a touch of folk, soul, pop, and funk. Then Michael Grimm captivated the audience with his southern charm and soulfully strong voice that left audience and other artists in awe.
Finishing out the night were Satellite and Tyrone Wells. Satellite is as good live as they are on CD and will definitely being making some huge waves in the near future, so watch out. A personal favorite, Tyrone Wells’ music is as heartfelt and real as he is in person. With a powerful voice, heartfelt lyrics and stories, Wells engages audiences everywhere and continues to be featured on many popular television shows; you’ve probably heard him and didn’t know it. ent to past and back again quite seamlessly, presenting two plot-lines—Julia and her husband’s marital struggles, and Sarah’s journey—that are interwoven by one tragedy. What is refreshing and melancholically delightful about the film is that its story bypasses the more brutal aspects of the Holocaust, which have been depicted often in movies, and focuses instead on the very real connections between the past and present and the legacies that bind those who endured WWII and those who remember.

The South Pasadena San Marino 7-8 Year Old Jr. Lakers Completed a Perfect Season The South Pasadena San Marino 7-8 Year Old Jr. Lakers completed a perfect season last week by winning their eighth consecutive game. Using a pressure, man-to-man defense, relentless fastbreak offense and dominant rebounding with balanced scoring, the Jr. Lakers won their games by an average of 35 points on their way to a championship based on a teamwork concept that included themes of leadership and character. Every player on the team scored, or had a rebound or assist, in all eight games, and every player led the team in at least one of those key statistical categories in one or more games. While the Jr. Lakers’ success was truly a result of a team effort, they had several standout players, including Ryan Rizzo of Arcadia. Rizzo averaged
in double figures in points and rebounds and remarkably grabbed more than 20 rebounds in a game twice during the season, while dominating the offensive boards to give his team many second, third and even fourth opportunities to score on a single possession. Rizzo was regularly assisted on the boards by several teammates, including James Lejeune. Arush Puri of Arcadia, Colin O’Malley and Colin Mathews were leaders of the Jr. Lakers’ running game, pushing the ball aggressively up court and either scoring on drives to the basket or passing off to open teammates for highpercentage shots. This fastbreak was a major reason the Jr. Lakers trailed after the first quarter only once all year, by four points, a deficit that was quickly erased in a 20-4 run to start
the next quarter. The Jr. Lakers also received accurate outside and perimeter shooting from Joshua Donko, Mark Martinez, Charlie Baker, Guy Gruppie, Jr. of Arcadia and Jacob Mark with Donko leading the league in long-range shooting percentage. Martinez, Rizzo, O’Malley and Mark were among the team’s defensive leaders who helped cause as many as 20 opponent turnovers per game despite the league limit on no defense until the offense moves the ball into the front court. The Jr. Lakers were enthusiastically coached and led by Mike Rizzo, whose concept of “Rebound, Run, Defend!” was the team’s credo. He was assisted by fellow Arcadian, Guy Gruppie, Sr.”

Jim Mirriam II died on August 18 after a long struggle with cancer. Mirriam was born April 26, 1951 and of him, but as his sister Jennifer said at the remembrance of his life “Jim was ready.” She added, “He was lying, but he told us he was Okay with it.” Mayor Mary Ann Lutz, one of many attended the memorial which was held at the Peach Cafe, Jim’s favorite in Monrovia, remembered. “He was a gently person and a gentleman. He gave of himself and of all his time. He truly was a person who never met a stranger.” He had plenty of opportunities to become acquainted with friends he hadn’t met yet. He retired from Pacific Bell/ATT approximately 15 years ago after 25 years service as a splicer. According to his family he totally loved his job with, as he put it, “the phone company.” He made his career choice young following his uncle Bob, he decided to become a phone company man. Mirriam loved climbing poles as a “phone man” because he could see everywhere from his
lofty vantage point. There were the negative aspects of the job (he didn’t really like the other side of the job, climbing into manhole covers because of the snake and spiders and other crawly things. According to his family, his climbing spikes came in hand the day he decided to trim the tree in his back yard and he cut the wrong branch. Coming down, the branch smashed his ladder. The family said he just pretended the tree was a phone pole and descended using his spikes for grippers. After his retirement. Mirriam started and maintained his own company here in Monrovia, Jim Home Maintenance. He was proud Monrovia Chamber member and a great supporter of Old Town. In fact he made all the giant candy canes which decorate Myrtle Avenue every year during the holiday season. Each year he repainted the decorations, fixed the broken ones and made new ones to replace those that were inevitably missing. Every year he also put up the candy canes on the poles and posts around
town. He made sure that he did it before Thanksgiving so the entire Old Town would be lit up the following Friday. His family recalled that many Thanksgiving nights Mirriam could be found still putting up those candy canes. All of Monrovia knew he had another passion, playing his banjo. He loved it according to the family and joined the extended family group, Kattywompus String Band. His family and many friends will be sponsoring a “Banjo Bench” in Library Park. He knew about his bench and was glad to thing that people would come and sit it that beautiful park and be happy. His friend and Banjo student Dennis Lottman was among those who spoke at his memorial. Lottman is looking forward to the bench because that is where the two of them used to sit for hours and play their banjos. At the memorial Lottman said that years ago he had heard that someone in Old Town gave Banjo lessons. By chance, the person he asked was Mirriam. “I told him I always wanted to play the banjo, Lottman said. “Jim’s response was, ‘Well, you’re not getting any younger.” Needless to say, Lottman learned to play the banjo and joined Kattywompus. Fittingly, the family gave him Mirriam’s favorite banjo. Mayor Lutz said of him, “While Jim will not be with us physically his spirit is engulfed in Old Town Monrovia and will be with us forever. Mirriam is survived by his three sisters, Pam Fitzpatrick, Jennifer Ranger and Cindy Ranger, numerous nieces, nephews, now great nieces and nephews and, of course, Old Town Monrovia.

For the period of Sunday, August 14, through Saturday, August 20, the Police Department responded to 953 calls for service of which 112 required formal investigations. The following is a summary report of the major incidents handled by the Department during this period. Sunday, August 14: Between August 11th at 5:00 p.m. and August 12th at 10:00 a.m., suspect(s) entered an unlocked vehicle in the 300 block of South Old Ranch Road and stole a wallet and cash. At about 2:10 p.m., loss prevention personnel from Macy’s at the Westfield Santa Anita Mall, 400 South Baldwin Avenue, detained a male juvenile for theft. The suspect took merchandise, concealed it, and walked out of the store without paying. The 14-yearold Hispanic male was arrested for commercial burglary after it was determined he came into the store with the intent to steal. Monday, August 15: Between August 14th at 10:00 p.m. and August 15th at 7:00 a.m., an auto theft occurred in the 200 block of South Baldwin Avenue. Suspect(s) stole a 1992 Honda Accord, white, 4-door that was parked at the location. Between 12:00 p.m. and 1:10 p.m., a theft occurred in the 600 block of West Naomi Avenue. Suspect(s) stole the tailgate of a 2007 Chevy Pickup that was parked on the street to the front of the location. Tuesday, August 16: Between August 15th at 12:30 p.m. and August 16th at 9:30 a.m., an auto burglary occurred in the 300 block of Laurel Avenue. Suspect(s) smashed the rear driver’s side window and stole a laptop and accessories. At about 10:46 p.m., officers responded to Denny’s, 7 East Huntington Drive, regarding a male subject asking for help. The 31-year-old Black male was intoxicated and unable to care for himself. He was placed under arrest for being drunk in public. Due to medical problems, he was later transported to a local area hospital for treatment. Wednesday, August 17: A traffic stop was conducted at approximately 3:07 a.m. on Baldwin Avenue north of Foothill Boulevard for failure to stop at a posted stop sign. Upon contact with the driver, the officer noticed the odor of an alcoholic beverage. A field sobriety test was conducted and the 34-year-old Hispanic
POLICE BLOTTERS female was arrested for D.U.I. Between August 17th at 6:00 p.m. and August 18th at 7:00 a.m., a residential burglary occurred in the 1100 block of South First Avenue. Suspect(s) removed the front gate of a property under construction by taking it off the hinges. Once inside, the suspect(s) stole several tools. Thursday, August 18: At about 3:45 p.m., units were dispatched to the 200 block of Longley Way regarding graffiti. The east wall of the property, as well as two other nearby locations, was spray painted with the word “One”. Between 1:30 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., an auto theft occurred at the Westfield Santa Anita Mall, 400 South Baldwin Avenue. Suspect(s) stole a 1994 Honda Civic, black, 2-door that was parked at the location. Friday, August 19: At approximately 10:00 p.m., a traffic stop was conducted on Peck Road and Rio Hondo Parkway for a broken brake light. A consensual search of the vehicle revealed an illegal switch blade knife for which the 19-year-old Hispanic male was placed under arrest. Between August 18th at 6:00 p.m. and August 19th at 7:10 a.m., an auto burglary occurred in the 200 block of Longley Way. Suspect(s) entered the vehicle by unknown means and stole a laptop and tote bag. Saturday, August 20: At approximately 3:38 a.m., a traffic stop was conducted on Baldwin Avenue and Longden Avenue. The driver was observed swerving in the roadway. The 41-year-old Hispanic male was found to be intoxicated and placed under arrest for D.U.I. At about 12:00 p.m., loss prevention personnel from JC Penney’s at the Westfield Santa Anita Mall, 400 South Baldwin Avenue, detained a female for theft. The suspect took merchandise, concealed it, and walked out of the store without paying. The 67-yearold Hispanic female was arrested for theft.

During the last seven-day period, the Police Department handled 659 service events,
resulting in 103 investigations. Following are the last week’s highlighted issues and events: Driving Under the Influence Traffic Collision Suspect Arrested On August 13 at 12:46 a.m., a female driver in an SUV was traveling south on Mayflower when another female driver in a sedan pulled out in front of her in the 1300 block of South Mayflower. The driver of the SUV was unable to stop and struck the sedan. Her SUV drove over the front end of the sedan, she overcorrected, and then struck a wall under the freeway overpass. The SUV was occupied by a 12-yearold female and her mother. The child sus-
tained a broken femur and the mother sustained a broken left foot; both were taken to a hospital for treatment. The driver of the sedan was determined to be under the influence and was arrested. She was also taken to a hospital for evaluation. Residential Trespassing On August 14 at 12:15 p.m., the owner of an apartment complex located in the 100 block of Montana discovered that one of the empty units at the complex is being used by what appears to be transients. The transients left evidence of possible identity and the investigation is continuing. Grand Theft Auto Recovery On August 14 at 7:45 p.m., a stolen 1993 Nissan Altima was located at a hotel in the 700 block of West Huntington. The vehicle had been stolen out of Azusa on July 28. No suspect information is known. The owner responded and recovered the vehicle. Investigation continuing.
Grand Theft Auto On August 14 at 8:25 p.m., a green, 1997 Honda was stolen from a carport area in the 400 block of West Duarte Road. The victim last saw the vehicle at 9:30 p.m. the previous night. Investigation continuing. Grand Theft Auto Recovery On August 15 at 8:20 a.m., an officer was dispatched to the 1600 block of Radford Place regarding a suspicious vehicle. The officer located the vehicle parked on the street. It was a reported stolen vehicle and it was unlocked and intact. The
victim was notified and responded to recover the vehicle. The victim did not find anything missing from the vehicle. A witness reported seeing a male Hispanic, 25-30 years old, 5’10”, 200 pounds, with short hair and clean shaven. The subject drove the vehicle to the location and parked it. He then left the location in a Chevy Tahoe that had followed the stolen vehicle and was being driven by a female Hispanic, approximately 2530 years old. The vehicle was returned to the victim and the investigation is continuing. Vehicle Burglary On August 15 at 1:54 p.m., an officer responded to the 200 block of South California on the report of a vehicle burglary. The victim reported that her locked vehicle was broken into and her property was stolen. Vehicle Versus Pedestrian Traffic Accident On August 15 at 4:07 p.m., officers responded to the 100 block of North Mayflower Avenue regarding a traffic accident. The incident involved a vehicle that struck a 77-yearold female pedestrian. The Monrovia Fire Department paramedics were on scene and readying the victim to be taken to a hospital. The driver of the vehicle was apparently backing up his van, using only his mirrors, and did not see the female victim and struck her. The female subject fell

backward onto the roadway and hit her head on the street. The victim was taken to the hospital and was in critical care overnight. She passed away the next day. Criminal Threats - Suspect Arrested On August 15 at 8:09 p.m., police received a call reporting a disturbing subject at the skate park in the 800 block of East Olive. The caller reported that a male subject was threatening people and said he had a gun, which was not seen, but he repeatedly reached into his waistband. The subject left the area prior to the arrival of officers. The suspect was claiming that the subjects at the skate park had taken his wallet, which he believed he had lost there. A short time after the officers left the area, the subject returned and confronted three people at the skate park. He pointed at them and threatened to shoot them. Officers responded and the suspect was positively identified by the victims, arrested, and charged for criminal threats. The suspect did not have a gun. Attempt Burglary On August 17 at 10:00 p.m., a resident in the 400 block of South Mayflower reported an attempted burglary. Sometime between August 16 and 17 an unknown suspect attempted to pry open the front door of the residence. There was no loss and the investigation is continuing. No-Bail Warrant - Suspect Arrested On August 17 at 1:04 p.m., an officer on patrol observed two suspicious subjects standing next to a vehicle in a parking lot in the 800 block of West Huntington and a third subject was crouching next to the vehicle. One of the standing subjects nudged the subject who was crouching down as if to alert him of police presence. The officer continued driving, but then went back to watch the three subjects. The officer believed the subjects were tampering with parked vehicles and detained them. Warrant checks revealed one of the subjects had two no-bail warrants for grand theft auto. He was arrested for the warrants. The other two subjects were identified and released. Detective Bureau Case Follow-up Identity Theft On Tuesday, August 16, Monrovia detectives served a search warrant in the 200 block of West Palm on an identity theft suspect’s apartment. Detectives found evidence linking the suspect to
the crime. Monrovia detectives also found evidence of three additional identity theft victims. The suspect was arrested and the handling detective is continuing his investigation by contacting the three additional victims. This case will be presented to the District Attorney’s office for filing considerations. The suspect will be facing a minimum of 10 identity theft allegations/ charges. The investigation into the additional victims may produce even more allegations/charges of identity theft. Residential Burglaries Committed While the Residences Were Tented/ Being Treated for Termites On Thursday, August 18, Monrovia detectives served a search warrant at a public storage facility in Arcadia in connection with two burglaries. The investigation led the handling detective to believe that one of the suspected burglars had a storage space at this storage facility. The search warrant allows the detectives to enter the storage space and to obtain information and records from the office regarding this space. This investigation is still ongoing. Child Molestation / Suspect Convicted on August 16 The suspect was arrested on December 15, 2009, for child molestation. The suspect, a registered sex offender, had allegedly molested his live-in stepdaughter repeatedly over an eight-year period, beginning when she was only 4 years of age. The case was assigned to a detective for further investigation and the District Attorney’s review. During the course of the detective’s investigation, he was able to locate a previous victim of the suspect, an ex-girlfriend’s daughter. She, too, was the victim of repeated sexual molestation by the suspect, which began when she was 6 years old. This case occurred in West Covina in 1995, while the suspect lived with the victim’s mother. Three felony charges were filed against the suspect for the Monrovia case by the Pasadena Superior Court and a jury trial began on August 10. On August 16, the case went to the jury, and in a short 60 minutes, they returned with a verdict: guilty on all counts. Each of the three counts holds a 25-year-to-life sentence, due to his prior felony sexual assault conviction.
