Two West Hollywood City Council members
said Tuesday they plan to introduce a resolution next month urging Casey Wasserman to resign as chairman of the Los Angeles Olympic organizing committee amid ongoing controversy over his past communications with Ghislaine Maxwell, an associate of convicted sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein.
Council members Chelsea Lee Byers and John Erickson joined a growing list of Democratic elected officials in Southern California calling for Wasserman's removal from a leadership role in the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Their remarks came a day after Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass broke her silence on the issue, saying that while she can't fire Wasserman, he should step down.
Speaking at a news conference at West Hollywood Park, the council members said they intend to introduce a resolution March 2 calling on Wasserman to resign and urging the LA28 executive board to hold him accountable. If approved, the measure would make West Hollywood the first city to formally take a

position on the issue, according to Erickson.
The council members said the resolution is also intended to signal support for survivors of human trafficking and sexual violence.
"Casey Wasserman must resign, and I call upon every elected leader in Los Angeles County and across this nation because that's what it's going to take for him to resign,"
Erickson said. "West Hollywood will lead the way."
Byers, who was mayor of West Hollywood in 2025, said the city has consistently stood with survivors and called for accountability from people in positions of power.
With the city expected to host activations and events for the 2028 Games, Byers
said "we refuse to look the other way while the Games are fronted by a chair whose own emails with a convicted trafficker are now a part of the public record."
"The LA28 Board's secretive review may satisfy lawyers, but it does nothing for those in our community who want to know that this region is not promoting the old boys club of impunity as we watch the Winter Olympics Games now and hear the stories of dedication and commitment and resilience of athletes, their coaches and families," Byers said.
"We should all care deeply that our own Olympic Games here in Los Angeles would risk the distraction, at the very least, of Wasserman's mired history competing for air time over what that stage is truly meant for," Byers continued.

Monrovia city officials delivered annually remarks at the State of the City event Tuesday, promoting citywide unity while noting the past year's accomplishments and ongoing challenges.
Key areas of concern were the Monrovia Unified School District's financial crisis caused by rising costs and declining enrollment, issues related to housing, homelessness and mental health care access and local small businesses and residents alike struggling to keep up with inflation. Officials also noted the impacts that state and federal policies have on cities, such as the destabilizing effects of trade wars and aggressive federal immigration enforcement.
Officials touted a wide range of accomplishments over the past year, including park and infrastructure upgrades, the municipal government's strong financial position and various efforts to address the list of challenges and concerns.
"What makes, and will always make Monrovia
special are the people," Mayor Becky Shevlin told attendees Tuesday evening at the at the Louise K. Taylor Performing Arts Center. "Our community members — your time, your effort and your passion — make our city a place where everyone belongs. Recently, I love Barbara Gholar’s invocation ... 'Unity does not mean sameness.' That message is echoed by (Councilman Larry Spicer’s) comments of 'better together,' which bring us to where we are today.
"We’renotperfect, but together. ... From this perspective we understand that unity embraces diversity, it fosters collaboration while respecting individual differences and encourages understanding, unity strengthens communities by bringing together our many strengths and ideas, and again, working together to make a difference."
Shevlin and fellow council members, along with Treasurer Janet Wall and City Clerk Alice Atkins, delivered remarks on a wide range of city issues.

KaiserPermanente nurses and health care workers will remain on picket lines Monday in the Los Angeles and Orange County areas as their open-ended strike alleging unfair labor practices amid prolonged contract talks enters its fourth week.

"We're striking because Kaiser has committed serious unfair labor practices and because Kaiser refuses to bargain in good faith over staffing that protects patients, workload standards that stop moral injury and the respect and dignity that Kaiser caregivers have been denied for far too long," said registered nurse Charmaine Morales, president of UNAC/UHCP.
"Striking is the lawful power of working people, and we are prepared to use it on behalf of our profession and patients," Morales said.
KaiserPermanente issued a statement saying it has "proposed 21.5% wage increases — our strongest national bargaining offer ever — and we are prepared to close agreements at local tables now. Employees deserve their raises and patients deserve our full attention, not prolonged disputes."
Camille Applin-Jones, senior vice president at Kaiser Permanente Southern California, described Kaiser's latest contract offer as "one of the strongest nursing contract offers in California this year" once step increases and local adjustments are factored in.

The union filed an unfair labor practice charge against Kaiser with the National Labor Relations Board alleging the company walked away from the bargaining table in December and has attempted to bypass the agreed-upon national bargaining process. The union has been bargaining with Kaiser since last May.
"With the strike holding strong, pressure is mounting on Kaiser Permanente to meet these demands and stop prolonged understaffing that increasingly harms both workers and patients," union officials said Monday. "If Kaiser is truly committed to its nonprofit mission, it must invest its resources in what actually creates healthy communities: a healthy workforce, safe patient-to-staff ratios, retention, training, and working conditions that make quality care possible."
Picket lines continued Monday at Kaiser hospitals and clinics in Northern California, Central California, Riverside, San Bernardino and San Diego counties, as well as in Hawaii.
In Orange and Los Angeles counties, the picketing was held at:

Registered nurses and otherlicensedmedical professionals at Providence Cedars-Sinai Tarzana Medical Center began a five-day strike Monday.
Union officials say the workers have been engaged in contract negotiations with management since July 2025 over a litany of issues they say negatively impact their work and their patients, including allegedly unsafe staffing and environmental hazards.
Representatives for Providence said the strike will not impact patients.
"We have contracted with an agency to provide highly qualified and experienced nurses and other professionals to ensure uninterrupted services and daily operations," they said in a statement provided to City News Service.
"We are disappointed SEIU 121RN chose this action rather than continue the important work of reaching an agreement at the bargaining table. We respect our caregivers' legal right to strike; however, we firmly believe that strikes only delay constructive contract talks, preventing represented caregivers from receiving the compensation increases and other contract enhancements they deserve.
"Over the past seven months, Providence has bargained in good faith with the goal of reaching a competitive agreement that supports caregivers and their families while also being sustainable."
But Golan Stuchinsky, a
physical therapist who has worked at the hospital for nearly 20 years, said management has "approached contract bargaining with a `take it or leave it' attitude.' They issue demands, and if their demands aren't met they refuse to discuss the issue further. That is not how a negotiation is supposed to work."
Officials with Service Employees International Union Local 121RN said picket lines will take place from 7 a.m. to noon each day this week at the hospital, located at 18321 Clark St.
On Tuesday, registered nurses at West Anaheim Medical Center plan to hold a three-day strike beginning Tuesday, according to union officials.
The California Nurses Association said the nurses are striking "to protest the administration's refusal to address RNs' deep concerns about patient care, retention and recruitment of nurses, and safe staffing."
The CNA represents more than 360 nurses at West Anaheim Medical Center who voted to authorize the labor action on Jan. 14.
Picketing started Tuesday. The nurses also planned a rally for 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at the hospital, 3033 W. Orange Ave. Officials said the nurses plan to return to work Friday.
The CNA said nurses have been in negotiations for a new contract since February 2025. They also held a one-day strike in August 2025.
Hospital officials could not be reached for comment.

AnthonyEdwards was selected as the recipientofthe Kobe Bryant Most Valuable Player award for helping the USA Stars to a 47-21 victory over the USA Stripes in the All-Star 2026 Championship Game and scoring a teamhigh 13 points in their 37-35 overtime victory over the World team in the first game Sunday at the Intuit Dome in Inglewood.
The Minnesota Timberwolves guard scored the first eight points of a 15- 0 run that increased the USA Stars' lead to 33-9 with 4:19 left. They closed the game with consecutive dunks by Atlanta Hawks forward Jalen Johnson, Oklahoma City Thundercenter-forward Chet Holmgren and Toronto Raptors forward-guard Scottie Barnes to take their biggest lead.
The USA Stars broke out to a 12-1 lead 2:36 into play with Philadelphia 76ers guard Tyrese Maxey scoring seven of his game-high nine points.
The NBA All-Star Game was a three-team roundrobin tournament consisting of four 12-minute games, with two teams of U.S. players and one of foreign players. It began with the USA Stars defeating the World team, 37-35, in overtime.
Edwards made a 3-point basket with 14 seconds to play to tie the score, 32-32.
Denver Nuggets guard Jamal Murray missed a 3-point shot for the World team, forcing the first-to-five overtime.

The United States versus the Rest of the World format is the third new concept since 2018 the NBA has used in an attempt to increase interest in the event. Commissioner Adam Silver said this format is "something many people have been asking for for a long time."
"We're sandwiched in the middle of the Olympics now, so it seemed like the appropriate time to try this new format," Silver said Saturday at his customary All-Star Game news conference.
Edwards said he likes this format.
"I think it makes us compete because it's only 12 minutes and the three different teams separate the guys," Edwards said. "I think it was really good."
After the first 66 NBA All-Star Games were played in an East vs. West format, the first change to the format came with the 2018 game where the players for

At 3:26 a.m., while patrolling the 300 block of South Myrtle, officers saw three subjects in a park after hours. One subject was found to be in possession of a controlled substance. At 3:38 a.m., an officer patrolling the area of Myrtle and Mountain saw a bicyclist commit a traffic violation. A traffic stop was conducted and the bicyclist was contacted. An investigation revealed he was in possession of a fixed blade knife and a controlled substance. He was arrested and taken into custody.
At 8:55 a.m., an officer was flagged down in the 900 block of West Foothill regarding a theft at a business. Officers located the suspect a short distance way. He was arrested and taken into custody.
At 4:23 p.m., a family disturbance was reported in the 100 block of West Colorado. Officers arrived and made contact with the parties involved. An investigation revealed a female resident battered her spouse. She was arrested and taken into custody.
At 5:44 p.m., a caller in the 100 block of North Canyon reported a subject lying on the ground. Officers arrived and made contact with the subject. An investigation revealed he was heavily intoxicated and unable to care for himself. He was transported to a hospital for medical treatment.

800 block of East Central reported a suspicious male subject at an auto dealership. Officers arrived and located the male subject in possession of stolen property. He was arrested and taken into custody.
At 2:46 a.m., officers contacted a male subject to the rear of a business in the 700 block of West Chestnut. During the contact, officers found the subject in possession of nitrous oxide with the intent to inhale it. The subject was arrested and taken into custody.
At 3:20 a.m., an officer contacted a male subject inside a park after hours in the 1600 block of South Myrtle. During the contact, the subject was found to be in possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia. The subject was arrested.
At 9:04 a.m., tagging was reported on a wall in the area of the 210 freeway and Magnolia. The graffiti was photographed and an order was sent for its removal. This investigation is continuing.

contact with him. An investigation revealed he was in possession of a controlled substance. He was arrested and taken into custody.
At 9:39 a.m., a caller in the 1200 block of South Shamrock reported a vandalism incident. The graffiti was photographed and an order was sent for its removal. This investigation is continuing.
At 1:14 p.m., a victim in the 100 block of South Mountain reported that her vehicle window was shattered and a bag was taken. This investigation is continuing.
At 3:09 p.m., an employee from a business in the 500 block of West Huntington reported a shoplifting in progress. Officers arrived and made contact with the suspects. An investigation revealed two female subjects stole merchandise and fled without paying. It was determined they were both involved in numerous thefts throughout the state. They were arrested, cited, and released at the scene.
At 5:23 p.m., a resident in the 500 block of Falling Leaf Alley reported graffiti in a parking structure. Officers arrived and submitted an order for removal. This investigation is continuing.

At 1:28 a.m., while patrolling the 1600 block of South Myrtle officers saw two subjects in a park after hours and made contact with them. An investigation revealed one of the subject’s was in possession of drug paraphernalia and the other was in possession of a controlled substance. They were both arrested and taken into custody.
At 4:17 a.m., a caller in the area of Concord and Alta Vista reported two male subjects underneath a parked vehicle sawing off a catalytic converter. The subjects were gone prior to officers’ arrival. This investigation is continuing.

At 1:22 a.m., a resident in the 800 block of Ocean View reported three subjects attempted to break into his
home. Officers arrived and discovered that the suspects fled when the resident yelled at the suspects. This investigation is continuing.
At 2:41 p.m., a loss prevention officer for a business in the 700 block of Huntington reported a male subject entered and fled with merchandise. Officers arrived and were unable to locate the subject. This investigation is continuing.
At 5:47 p.m., a victim in the 700 block Royal Oaks reported an unknown subject damaged his vehicle’s windshield. This investigation is continuing.

At 4:28 a.m., officers were dispatched to an apartment complex in the 200 block of West Pomona regarding two subjects attempting to break into a security room. Officers arrived and located both subjects. They were arrested and taken into custody.
At 1:06 p.m., a victim in the 100 block of West Cherry reported a vehicle burglary. This investigation is continuing.
At 2:45 p.m., a resident in the 100 block of North Magnolia reported that a neighbor took fencing from his property and used it on his property. This investigation is continuing.
At 5:42 p.m., a vehicle theft was reported by a resident in the 100 block of North Myrtle. This investigation is continuing.
At 6:43 p.m., officers were dispatched to a vacant residence in the 200 block
of Fig. Officers arrived and made contact with a male and female subject inside. A computer search revealed the female subject had been reported missing. They were both arrested and taken into custody and she was removed from the missing person system.

At approximately 9:35 a.m., an officer conducted extra patrol of the Santa Anita Wash area near First Avenue and Foothill Boulevard. The officer located illegal camping and a suspect in possession of drug paraphernalia. A 37-year-old female from Monrovia was arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking.

At approximately 3:19 p.m., an officer responded to a residence in the 800 block of North Second Avenue regarding a fraud report. The victim discovered someone charged multiple fraudulent transactions to his credit card. His home surveillance camera system captured a White or Hispanic female, approximately 20 to 25 years old, who may be related to the crime. The investigation is ongoing.

At approximately 9:44 p.m., an officer responded to a parking lot at 745 W. Naomi Ave. regarding a theft from a vehicle incident. Sometime between 1:15 and 9 p.m., someone stole a catalytic converter from the victim’s Lexus SUV.

At approximately 10:41 a.m., an officer responded to the 500 block of Santa Cruz Road regarding a grand theft report. An investigation revealed someone stole the victim’s chainsaws from his work truck. A black SUV was seen in the neighborhood during the time of the crime.

At approximately 1:42 p.m., an officer responded to USC Arcadia Hospital, located at 300 W. Huntington Drive, regarding a battery incident. The officer discovered a patient spit at and bit a hospital security guard. The investigation is ongoing.

At approximately 6:25 p.m., an officer responded to La Bella Laser and Slimming, located at 1004 N. Santa Anita Ave., regarding a vehicle burglary report. An investigation revealed sometime between 10:15 a.m. and 6:20 p.m., someone broke a window and stole various items and electronics.

At approximately 9:52 p.m., an officer responded to a residence in the 2100 block of South Fifth Avenue regarding a burglary report. Sometime between 6:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. on Jan. 17, unknown suspects shattered a glass door and burglarized the home. They fled with jewelry and handbags. The investigation is pending a review of the available surveillance footage.

What Is a Manufactured Home?
Manufactured homes are houses built in a factory rather than on the land where you'll live. They are constructed using the same building materials as site-built homes but take less time to build

and are typically more affordable because the efficiency of the factory building process lowers costs.
The home may consist of a single section or two or more sections that are built on a permanent steel frame in a factory and transported to your property. Once it arrives, it will be placed on the land that you own or lease, or in a manufactured housing community.
Modern manufactured homes offer attractive design options that are nearly indistinguishable from site-built homes. For example, modern factory-built homes such

The HUD Code ensures that manufactured homes achieve a certain energy efficiency standard, which can save you money on your monthly utility bills and help keep your home environment comfortable. TO ALL INTERESTED PARTIES:
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the City of El Monte (the “City”) is initiating its application process for the 2026-2027 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and HOME-funded programs. The City is an entitlement community and is expected to receive CDBG and HOME funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) for Fiscal Year 2026-2027. The Notice of Funding Availability (NOFA) covers a one-year period for CDBG activities that will begin July 1, 2026, and end June 30, 2027. Funding will be contingent on availability from HUD and will be administered by the City through its Housing Division.
Activities that benefit low and moderate-income El Monte residents, meet HUD program objectives and align with the City’s priorities are encouraged to apply.
All applications must be received no later than 5:00 p.m. on Friday, March 20, 2026. Applications not submitted via email prior to the deadline will not be eligible.

Bass' remarks came weeks after three Los Angeles City Council members and County Supervisor Janice Hahn called on Wasserman to resign over a string of racy emails with Maxwell, who's been convicted of sex trafficking for her role in a widespread sexual abuse scandal involving the late Epstein.
Despite these calls for Wasserman's resignation, the LA28 Executive Committee Board backed Wasserman as chair, citing an independent investigation that examined his past interactions with Maxwell.
Maloney urged Wasserman to step down as LA28 chairman, saying, "Mr. Wasserman, you have turned your back on these survivors, like our administration has. Hollywood does not have your back anymore."
Mark Adams, a spokesman for the International Olympic Committee, addressed reporters Tuesday for a daily briefing during the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Games, in which he maintained the issue is still in the hands of the LA28 Executive Board.
"As you know, an independent law firm looked into it, and it's up to the board to draw their own conclusions," Adams said. "I understand there are many conversations happening at this moment, but I will not make any further comment."
In a CNN interview Monday, Bass said that while she can't fire Wasserman from the committee, her "opinion is that he should step down."
"That's not the opinion of the board," Bass added. "The board made a decision. I think that was unfortunate. I don't support the decision. I do think that we need to look at the leadership. However, my job as
reiterated it happened long before her and Epstein's crimes came to light. He's also denied having a personal or business relationship with Epstein.
Wasserman's name surfaced when the latest batch of Epstein documents were made public by the U.S. Department of Justice as part of its investigation into Epstein, who died in a jail cell in August 2019 of a reported suicide as he awaited trial on federal charges.
The former financier was accused of procuring underage girls to perform sexual favors for various highly influential millionaires and billionaires at a private island.
The Board — the leaders responsible for planning and executing the preparations for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Los Angeles — said in a statement that the organization takes allegations of misconduct seriously, and is committed to thoroughly reviewing any concerns related to the organization's leadership.
LA28 hired outside counsel O'Melveny & Myers LLP to conduct a review of Wasserman's past interactions with Maxwell and Epstein. The board said Wasserman fully cooperated with the review.
"We found Mr. Wasserman's relationship with Epstein and Maxwell did not go beyond what has already been publicly documented," the board said in a statement.
"Twenty-three years ago, before Mr. Wasserman or the public knew of Epstein and Maxwell's deplorable crimes, Mr. Wasserman and his then-wife flew on a humanitarian mission to Africa on Epstein's plane at the invitation of the Clinton Foundation. This was his single interaction with Epstein. Shortly after, he traded the publicly known emails with Maxwell," the board said.

The documents revealed multiple salacious email exchanges between Wasserman and Maxwell, Epstein's associate who was convicted in 2021 on federal charges of sex trafficking and conspiracy for helping Epstein procure girls and young women.
Michael Carrillo, an attorney who has represented survivors of sexual violence, said LA28's report was not enough.
"This is sending a message to all survivors that: 'We will back powerful individuals like Casey Wasserman, but we will not care or protect you.' It is sending a message that the LA29 Olympic Committee is more concerned about saving Wasserman than mingling sex trafficking issues with the 2028 Olympics," Carrillo said.
Caroline Heldman, an advocate for survivors, emphasized the Olympics are not a "private playground for wealthy men and for the powerful." She described the Games as a "civic trust that belongs to all of us."
"If LA28 wants to regain its moral authority, and I assure you, you have lost it, the board must immediately remove Casey Wasserman. You cannot build an Olympic foundation on complicity. LA deserves better. Survivors deserve better," Heldman said.
CouncilmanEdward Belden noted the impact of federal and state polices on local governance.
"When we last gathered at LOOK Cinemas last year to discuss the state of our city, our efforts were focused on wildfire victims in our neighboring communities," Belden recalled. "The Palisades and Eaton fires were the most destructive in Los Angeles County history and a transition in Washington, D.C.
"No matter how great of a community we have here in Monrovia, what happens in Washington and Sacramento does impact us here."
Belden addressed President Donald Trump's aggressive crackdown on illegal immigration.
"We recognize and sympathize with those members of our community that are living in fear and are pain or have been traumatized and feel threatened by our own federal government," Belden said.
The councilman since 2024 recalled the death last year of Carlos Roberto Montoya Valdez, who was fatally struck as he attempted to cross the 210 freeway while fleeing immigration agents at the Monrovia Home Depot.
"We have requested copies of investigative reports and will continue seeking transparency from our State Government into the death of Mr. Montoya," said Belden. "And we have met with those who wish to honor Mr. Montoya with a tribute and provided necessary information for their consideration. If we wish to honor the legacy of someone, results require more than attending meetings and telling the city to do something. We must all roll up our sleeves and work together."
Belden spoke of the connection between federal trade policy and the local economy.
"Trade wars and tariffs affect the cost of goods and materials used by manufacturers and the costs of items car dealerships in Monrovia," he said. "Government shutdowns affect the timeliness of funding, grant reimbursements, and even communication across government
agencies. Several of our successful non-profit organizations have lost federal funding for programs that support Monrovians with the greatest needs. Residents are receiving notices that housing subsidies and stipends are ending with zero alternatives.
"Staffing cuts at federal agencies like FEMA create unique challenges," the councilman continued. "Consider this: After completion of the Canyon Park Repair Project, the City anticipates that at least $15.1 million is eligible for state and federal reimbursements. To date, we have received only $4.1 million."
Mayor Pro Tem Tamala Kelly highlighted the reopening of Canyon Park and library upgrades despite the funding uncertainty.
"In the face of challenge and adversity, we should all ask ourselves this question every day, 'what can we do?'" said Kelly, a council member since 2022. "A wise mother once said, 'Prosperity tries the fortunate; adversity… the great.” Our community grows, prospers, and excels when we go through difficult times.
"After 5 long years, on June 27, we welcomed the community back to the park. For 5 years — half a decade — the park was closed. We survived a wildfire, a pandemic, and two floods," Kelly said. "We encountered delays and hurdles beyond our control. The experience was awful, and we hope it never happens again. But the park has reopened and is better than ever."
The park has new utilities, roads and parking lots, as well as new fiber and wireless connectivity and a renovated the Nature Center, Kelly said.
"The park was the buffer that protected our homes from the fire," she added. "It was a sanctuary for animals and wildlife that survived the Eaton Fire. It is a sacred place, and it is welcome to all."
Councilmen Larry Spicer and Sergio Jimenez discussed the city's efforts to address the region wide housing shortage and homelessness.
"Collaboration has always been our strength," Spicer began. "In fact, if you
remember our 2024 AllAmerica City theme, “'Better together,' you know that phrase captures exactly what makes Monrovia special."
The councilman since 2013 noted efforts to encourage job creation and workforce development with infrastructure improvements and job placement programs, as Monrovia and cities throughout Southern California address homelessness and housing issues.
"We’ve also strengthened our support for mental health," Spicer said. "Through our partnership with Care Solace, anyone and I repeat, anyone can get connected to mental health resources."
Last year Care Solace helped more than 4,200 people, answered nearly 1,000 calls, provided over 4,200 services and connected people to health care within one to five days on average, with a 90% success rate, Spicer reported.
"This program complements our partnership with the San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments’ Crisis Assistance Response and Engagement Team SGV CARE which works alongside the Monrovia Police Department to better respond to mental health-related calls," the councilman said.
"Over the past several years, the Police Department has averaged 184 annual calls for mental health evaluations. Last year, that number dropped by 16%," Spicer said. "That improvement is the result of proactive work officers and clinicians following up with individuals, checking on treatment progress, and connecting people to services."
Since the program started, officers have made 331 in-person contacts and 325 follow-up calls, according to Spicer.
"Their efforts earned the Monrovia Police Department the 2025 Excellence in Community Policing Award from the Police Officers Association of Los Angeles County," Spicer said. "We are incredibly proud of their work."
The Pathway Home Project "brought the city, Los Angeles County, and a

local hotel owner together to create temporary housing for people experiencing homelessness," Spicer said. "The results were remarkable: 57 individuals came off the street, received wraparound services, food, and medical care, and later this month, every one of them will transition into permanent supportive housing in Baldwin Park. The hotel will return to its original use, and the program will close as a success story proof that collaboration can solve even the most complex challenges.
"We know we won’t 'solve' homelessness entirely, but we are doing our part," Spicer said. "The annual Point-inTime Count isn’t perfect, but it is important. And when you look at Monrovia’s numbers, you can see the progress we’re making and with continued effort and your support, we will keep moving forward."
Jimenez, elected to the council in 2024 he was appointed to the panel in '22, recalled, "At the start of the year, there was much concern about, not one but two large housing projects at the edge of Old Town. ... We fielded countless calls from residents regarding density, traffic, construction and much more. What’s worse, we knew that state law allows such developments, and failure to comply with it would certainly result in a litigation loss for the city. ...
"In March, we learned that the owner of the Oak Park Apartments considered selling the 156-unit devel-
opment and the rights to develop its planned six-story, 296-unit proposal," Jimenez said. "The city worked quietly behind the scenes to find a suitable partner on the project, resulting in partnerships with Foothill Affordable Housing Foundation and the Foundation for Affordable Housing. Together, a proposal would include purchasing the property and converting 100% of the units to affordable housing. The new owners will refresh the exterior later this year, but the six-story, dense project proposal has been abandoned.
"And what did our community get in return? A 100% affordable housing project and preservation of the current building. The new owners didn’t even displace the tenants, I sure hope we see more of these."
Jimenez cautioned that "the trade-off for building more affordable housing usually results in reduced parking and increased density," he said. "We must be careful when we consider these tradeoffs."
The councilman pointed to the recently approved 701 S. Myrtle Avenue Plan and Development Project.
"The city’s General Plan calls for the creation of walkable, mixed-use projects along South Monrovia," Jimenez said. "At the corner of Myrtle and Olive, a new housing project will bring 204 new housing units to Old Monrovia. ... At least 20 of these homes will be set aside as affordable for low-income households. The project will also include a public plaza ...
with places to sit, shade trees and decorative paving for everyone to enjoy."
Jimenez noted the council's approval of an Inclusionary Housing Ordinance, which requires market-rate residential developments to include affordable housing units, and updated rules for Accessory Dwelling Units "to make it easier for any homeowner to add these much-needed homes to their properties," the councilman said. "By reducing barriers and streamlining the review process, residents now only need a building permit to get started. ... Homeowners can save both time and money while helping to provide more housing options in Monrovia."
Shevlin looked ahead to projects currently in development.
"The Community Center is in plan check, and we expect to break ground later this year," she said of the planned renovation project. "While there are still details to finalize, we are excited about the opportunity to acquire the (historic mountainside sign known as the) 'Big M.' We are already working on preserving the Anderson House and look forward to protecting the 1892 Victorian at 222 E. Cypress. And of course, we’re just beginning to discuss how to address a closed middle school, a downtown theater and even a large manufacturing facility in Ducommun."

The Los Angeles Times, in an article published Friday, said Bass took charge of how to respond to a deluge of media inquiries to the LAFD in October 2025, after it was learned the January 2025 Palisades inferno was caused by the rekindling of a smaller arson fire days earlier.
The assertion in Friday's Times story was based on an internal email the paper said it reviewed, and was separate from information in a Times story last week that said Bass had directed changes to the after-action report over concerns about legal liabilities — which Bass denied last week.
In Friday's story, the Times wrote that the "carefully coordinated approach"
led by Bass in October 2025 also involved the release of the Palisades Fire afteraction report after federal prosecutors announced the part played in the wildfire by the smaller fire. The LAFD was facing criticism for not fully extinguishing the earlier blaze.
The email discussed in the Friday Times story is an Oct. 9 email from LAFD spokesperson Capt. Erik Scott to a Bass aide, then-interim Fire Chief Ronnie Villanueva and others.
"Any additional interviews with the Fire Chief would likely depend on the Mayor's guidance," Scott wrote, according to the newspaper.
"Regarding a press conference, I would be cautious as it could invite a high volume of challenging questions, and this would also be contingent on the Mayor's direction."
Last week, Bass denied a story published in The Times in which unnamed sources said she directed changes to the after-action report over concerns about legal liabilities.
The Times last week said sources told the paper that two people close to Bass
informed the sources of the mayor's alleged role in "watering down" the report, which was meant to spell out mistakes and to suggest measures to avoid repeating them.
Bass last week called the Times story "completely fabricated," adding, "There was no cover-up on my part. There was absolutely no reason or desire that I would want to water down this report.
"I do not have the technical expertise to make any sort of substantive changes to anything," Bass added.
Friday, in a message to City News Service regarding the most recent Times report, Yusef Robb, an adviser to the mayor, emphasized that Bass was engaged with the LAFD's rollout of the report just as she would be with major issues involving any city department.
"From Animal Services to the Zoo, the Mayor's Office is in contact with every city department on issues large and small, and so obviously and appropriately the Mayor's Office engaged with LAFD about the rollout of the after-action report,"

"Mayor Bass has been vocal and clear for more than a year about the deep concerns she has had about pre-deployment and other major issues. Mayor Bass is the one who ordered the after-action report, going so far as to fire the previous fire chief who refused to do the report."
Alleged revisions that downplayed failures by the city and the LAFD in handling the disaster were first reported in a Times investigation published in
December.
In one instance, according to the Times, LAFD officials removed language from a section of the report labeled "failures," saying that the decision not to fully staff up and pre-deploy all available crews and engines ahead of a forecast of dangerously high winds "did not align" with the department's policy and procedures during red flag days.
The Times wrote Friday that the final report stated that the LAFD "balanced fiscal responsibility with
proper preparation for predicted weather."
Elsewhere, the report said that the number of engine companies rolled out ahead of the fire "went above and beyond the standard LAFD pre-deployment matrix," the paper said.
That passage in the "failures" section, which was renamed "primary challenges," was being revised by LAFD officials up until at least two days before the report was released on Oct. 8, according to emails reviewed by the Times.
