ixty-three patients at the Golden Cross Health Care nursing home in Pasadena were evacuated from the unlicensed facility due to numerous safety and health violations, including serious concerns about protocols related to the coronavirus pandemic, treatment of patients and lack of PPE, authorities said Friday. The facility had a capacity of 96 and was certified on April 1, 2020, according to state records. At least 72 residents and 32 staff in the facility were confirmed to have been infected

with the novel coronavirus, which is also linked to eight deaths there. “The city went above and beyond in protecting the more than 60 residents at Golden Cross. The healthcare facility, located on North Fair Oaks, failed to do its most fundamental duty in providing its most basic functions of caring for these patients: providing sufficient nutrition and water, and ensuring their safety from not only COVID-19, but also basic medical needs like oxygen, diabetes care, wound care,” city spokeswoman Lisa Derderian told Pasadena Independent. The cost of care in nursing homes in the U.S. is prohibitive for many, and it can vary widely between regions and states, from

around $5,000 to $25,000 per month. How much a nursing home charges depends on its location, staffing levels, the complexity of care offered and the facility’s size and quality. There may also be additional charges for individualized care. Vice Mayor Tyron Hampton has been calling for investigations into nursing homes since the pandemic of COVID-19 changed each of our lives forever. “I have been calling for an investigation into our response in these facilities since the beginning of the outbreak," said Hampton. "We need to make sure all of our residents are being treated with dignity and respect, and I will continue to hold our health department

accountable." Hampton has been outspoken regarding his belief that the Pasadena Public Health Department (PPHD) “failed to hold senior care facilities accountable.” In the city 61% of cases (518 of 1,058 as of Tuesday) and 88% percent of deaths (75 of 85 as of Tuesday) are associated with long-term care facilities. Hampton told Pasadena Independent in a written statement that the response he received consistently from PPHD is that it’s an issue of jurisdiction. “I’ve never been satisfied with that response. I will not be satisfied with that SEE NURSING HOME PAGE 2

ewa International — a Hindu faithbased, humanitarian, nonprofit service organization founded in 2003 — surprised staff at Beacon Media Tuesday morning with the gift of several handmade face masks. Jyothi Yayavram, Vivek Chandran and Ravi Chilakamarri, members of the local chapter of Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (HSS) spearheaded the creation and delivery of the much needed masks to essential workers including firefighters, medical professionals, other first responders and local newspaper(s), including Beacon Media News. The philosophy of HSS is to show appreciation to those who have demonstrated “great courage and sacrifice and service to the community during these unprecedented

times,” Chilakamarri, Temple City Chapter coordinator, said during a brief interview Tuesday. Chilakamarri told Beacon Media that the “world is one family” and that HSS volunteers have made and distributed over 1,200 masks in the local area to hospitals and those in most need. Calling themselves “COVID Warriors,” the Temple City chapter also distributed masks to the Temple Station Sheriff’s Department earlier in the day as well as City of Hope. The project, which has been ongoing now for two months, has helped countless people and organizations with colorful, comfortable and 100%-cotton face masks, which have become a part of everyone’s daily life during this pandemic. Sewa International is part of a larger movement that started in India in 1989

and is active in 20 countries. Sewa serves humanity irrespective of race, color, religion, gender or nationality. The humanitarian organization specializes in disaster relief and rehabilitation. Their development programs focus on family services; child, tribal and refugee welfare; women’s empowerment; health; and education. In addition to their work in the U.S., the volunteers have undertaken development projects in Colombia, Guyana, India, Kenya, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Believing in the Dharma principles of “Serving humanity is serving divinity” and “Unity in diversity,” HSS is about service above self, teamwork and self-reliance. response. I believe that our public health department has a duty to protect the health and well-being of every Pasadena resident, especially those that are among the most vulnerable members of our community. I wish action had been taken sooner, but I’m pleased that the pressure I applied resulted in more specific direction to staff and a greater focus on these facilities. It is imperative that each and every individual who lives in one of these facilities is treated with dignity and respect, and I want each of them to know that we care about their health and wellbeing. With that being said, I will continue to hold the public health department accountable because it is not a jurisdiction issue, it’s an accountability issue. I hope it’s clear to all of the skilled nursing facilities in Pasadena that I’m watching, and that the Pasadena Public Health Department is watching too.” Councilman Victor Gordo has also been a vocal proponent for more accountability from these nursing homes. We requested comment from Gordo, however, our calls were

not immediately returned. Pasadena city staff “repeatedly and relentlessly pushed the state to act on the information being collected by its own inspectors, who were regulating Golden Cross. As well as other long-term care facilities,” according to Derderian. “This facility [Golden Cross] was so unstable, it required assistance from the CAlMat team (EMSA), and the National Guard, and both teams reported concerns about the poor quality of care and lack of improvement when the state issued multiple plans of correction. “The City had prepared options for alternative SNFs for residents early on, including mobilizing EMS transport multiple times, and having the Ombudsman communicate with families, but was stopped by the state per their request. They issued a temporary suspension of the license but still encountered difficulty implementing the actual movement of residents out, so they asked for assistance from the city. The facility was operating without a license. “The city went into action immediately and was

able to safely transfer all patients to new locations,” Derderian said. COVID-19 simply unmasked the underlying and ongoing problems at Golden Cross that should be monitored by the state regulatory authority. Once their license was revoked, they were operating without a license, and the city was able to move residents out. “The facility lied to the city on several occasions on the health status of their patients,” according to Derderian. “Sad when they put greed in front of patient care and welfare and only look at the business aspect not the human beings and families involved.” There are 75 registered nursing homes providing care for seniors in the greater Pasadena area. By Friday morning, the patients had been relocated to other facilities in Los Angeles County via a convoy of about 30 private ambulances. Derderian told Pasadena Now, that officials working at the Golden Cross could face charges as the state and local police conduct investigations.

here has been considerable tension the past few weeks in our country in the wake of George Floyd’s murder at the knee of a white police officer. Combine this with COVID-19, and its disproportionate effects on minority groups, and we have what many are calling the perfect storm. That horrific video set off a series of events, worldwide, that some see as a truly defining moment in American history and people demanding change in the way police and local government deal with such issues. On June 3, during one of the many peaceful Black Lives Matter (BLM) protests in Monrovia, Mayor Tom Adams made some comments that offended many in the community who said he (Adams) was out of touch with the efforts of Black Lives Matter locally. During public comment at the virtual City Council meeting Tuesday, scores of citizens voiced passionate concerns about the recent events and the multiple Black Lives Matter protests as well as that speech at Library Park by Mayor Adams. Read aloud by City Clerk Alice Atkins, here are a few of those comments. “It is my sincere hope that Monrovia will loudly and proudly announce that we are a community that will stand strongly against racism,” said Kristen-Norton Zellem. Another resident, Janet Wall, said “It seems to me that

Tom Adams has publicly apologized for “insensitive” comments he made June 3. – Photo by Terry Miller / Beacon Media News

now is the time to not just listen, but to take action to fix these issues (concerning race relations) that are real whether or not we want to admit it.” Calling Adams’ June 3 remarks “seriously tone deaf and dismissive,” Nikki Montoya stressed the thoughts of many who implied Adams basically said “I have a black friend,” in responses. Montoya told Adams “you clearly have a lot to learn.” Several other residents voiced the collective concern that local government doesn’t listen. “Do better and listen to all of your community,” Joshua Salinas said. One letter from Ali Lauder who said she is “A very angry citizen of Monrovia” addressed Adams directly regarding a comment he made on KGEM during an interview with Ralph Walker. Walker asked Adams if he could say the words “Black Lives Matter?” Lauder said Adams deflected and ignored the question and accused the

mayor of being racist. In his opening remarks, the mayor apologized if people took his comments the wrong way and emphatically stated “Black lives matter.” Adams went on to read a new city proclamation (including all the usual “whereas” etc.) in support of change and justice in Monrovia. “This is the time to change, if we don’t get it now, we never will.” Now is a “moment of reckoning!” Adams’s proclamation also read that people will get justice if they received “inferior treatment” without stating specifics. After reading the lengthy proclamation, Adams requested that the city manager distribute the document to all Black churches in the city. To which someone later pointed out to the mayor that he should deliver the document to ALL places of worship in the city, not just Black churches. Adams apologized for the omission.

Councilman Larry Spicer asked that councilmembers each select a delegate for an AdHoc committee of citizens for essentially oversight of the city’s ambitions. City Attorney Craig Steele advised council that it should place this as an agenda item for the next scheduled meeting. Other councilmembers including Becky Shevlin and Gloria Crudgington expressed their desire for the city to recognize Juneteenth. “I think this is more important than Columbus Day,” Crudginton stated. They also noted that there is a Junteeth celebration this Friday at Station Square and were equally supportive of this event. Mayor ProTempore, Alex Blackburn had no comment. Friday’s inaugural Juneteeth celebration in Monrovia will take place at 5 p.m. at Station Square Park. There will be voter registration booths, speakers and more. All Fireworks Are Illegal in Pasadena and City Ordinance Will Be Strictly Enforced Fire danger and injuries from fireworks still exist even in the midst of a pandemic crisis. The City of Pasadena municipal code holds property owners and tenants responsible for permitting the possession, sale, usage or discharge of fireworks on their property. The ordinance allows for the prosecution of fireworks-related offenses and for the demand of payment for all costs associated with the safe disposal of confiscated fireworks. The City maintains a zero tolerance enforcement

policy for fireworks, and Pasadena’s police and firefighters are teaming up for special fireworks enforcement patrols before and during the Fourth of July holiday. Violators are subject to arrest; having their vehicles impounded; and serving up to one year in jail and fines up to $50,000. Statistics show that fireworks are among the most dangerous of all consumer products. Even hand-held sparklers, which many consider safe, are dangerous and can reach 1,200 degrees

Fahrenheit, causing serious burns or fires. National Fire Protection Association statistics reveal that a majority of fireworks-related injuries are caused by so-called “safe and sane” fireworks, which are illegal in Pasadena. Residents may use the Pasadena Citizen Service Center mobile app to report illegal fireworks. Due to the potential for fire hazards and injuries, Pasadena police and fire personnel will patrol the

city looking for illegal firework activity, and police officers will seize. Parking enforcement officers will impound vehicles illegally parked in Pasadena’s hillside areas on July 4. The Pasadena Fire Department will be applying Phos-Chek to brush areas around the Arroyo area. The main ingredients of this fire retardant are phosphates and fertilizers to help prevent plants from burning and to re-vegetate burned wildland areas.

Monrovia Fire & Rescue to Get New Ladder Truck A small group of Monrovia firefighters is currently in Pennsylvania conducting the final inspection on a new KME ladder truck, according to Friday’s City Manager’s Update. This is the last step before the

truck is driven to California for equipment outfitting and personnel training. The truck is referred to as a tractor drawn aerial (TDA), where the rear wheels are controlled by a firefighter steering from

the rear of the apparatus. This configuration provides better maneuverability compared to the department’s current truck. Storage capacity is also increased which allows for a better cache of tools.

MONA Become New Caretakers of Circus of Books Neon Sign The Museum of Neon Art (MONA) are the new caretakers for the Silverlake Circus of Books sign. For generations of gay men, the Circus of Books sign was a symbol for a store, gathering place, cruising spot, and resource to the community. Circus of Books survived the AIDS crisis, censorship wars, and multiple recessions until its closure in 2016. In April 2020, a documentary called “Circus of Books” by artist, filmmaker, and daughter of the business owners, Rachel Mason, was released on Netflix. “The story of neon is often seen as synonymous with Americana. At MONA we are proud to preserve and showcase a diversity of sig-

nage and neon art that demonstrates that the story of America is complex, diverse, and multi-layered. We believe history can’t be told without mom-and-pop businesses, immigrant narratives, and stories of businesses that hid in plain sight, while glowing as a beacon to those on the margins. Circus of Books is a sign that bears testament to hidden narratives of individuals forced to exist in the shadows, and the businesspeople who put themselves at risk to provide services to them,” says MONA Executive Director Corrie Siegel.

DID YOU KNOW SOME COMPANIES ARE GIVING THEIR EMPLOYEES TIME OFF TO CELEBRATE JUNETEENTH?

Celebrated every year on June 19, Juneteenth commemorates emancipation from slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865 Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger issued order No. 3 informing the people of Galveston, Texas that President Abraham Lincoln, who had been assassinated by this point, had proclaimed all slaves in the Confederacy free. The Emancipation Proclamation itself had been in effect for two-and-a-half years (having been issued on Jan. 1, 1863) at this point but enslavers were responsible for informing slaves — slaves in Union states that had not seceded in the Civil War were not freed until the 13th Amendment was ratified. Predictably, many ignored these orders until Union troops enforced it. Texas was the last Confederate state to have the proclamation announced. Juneteenth is not considered a federal holiday, although 47

How much do you make? Angela COPELAND, angela@copelandcoaching.com

O

ne of the hardest parts of the job interview process comes in the form of a very simple question: "How much do you make?" The question typically comes up in the first screening call with the human resources recruiter. It is also asked on the online job application. The problem is that answering the question — "how much do you make" or "how much do you want to make" — can put you at a disadvantage as a job seeker. Sites like Glassdoor have shown us that there are a huge range of salaries offered for roles. Salaries aren't standardized across industries or even

within companies. If you answer this question off by almost any amount at all, you can be (and often are) eliminated from consideration. In other words, the company has a pay range in mind. If you don't correctly guess a number in that range, you're out. If you're too low, they may consider you to be underqualified, and too high, they'll assume you'd say no to an offer. If you're inside of the range, but on the low end, you will be paid on the low end in the future. If you ask a recruiter why they need to know this information, they'll tell you they just want to learn if you're in their budget. But, we aren't products to be bought and sold. We're humans. The company knows the value of the role. They ought to share

their number, and allow the job seeker to determine if it's a fit. The good news is the laws around salary are evolving. In a number of states and cities, companies can no longer ask for salary history. In California, if you're in a job interview and you ask for the pay range, the employer must share it with you. READER REACTS TO OBITUARY IN JUNE 11 PUBLICATION There must be many of your readers who are well versed in the Spanish language, and I hope those who aren't found someone to translate Roberto Muñiz Ramirez's soul-stirring obituary in your June 11 issue. For those who missed that treasure, I'd like to offer my translation: Don't look at my tomb I am not there. I am in the breeze that caresses you. In the flowers that you water each day. In the sparkling stars which gaze at your home each night. In the smile of your children, In the sweet birds that

sing by your window, Do not approach my grave with tears. I am not there. I am in your heart. Dear father and grandfather Roberto Muñiz Ramirez - David Q. MONROVIA

READERS REACT TO ‘CONTROVERSY ENSUES OVER LOCAL ELECTED OFFICIAL’S COMMENTS AT BLM PROTEST’ You could see the possibility that Adams meant to say nobody in the city government has been affected more. If he didn’t mean to compare the hurt of the police to the hurt of Black residents, why doesn’t he clarify what he did

mean? - Buddy B. MONROVIA The word “racist” has been so cheapened that it now means nothing. Tom Adams has been a pillar in this city for decades. A racist? Far from it. I knew there would be some over sensitive jacka— creating a problem where there isn’t a problem. If he were such a racist, why has he been re-elected? And if the BLM cared so much for black lives, why aren’t they protesting in the streets where most Black lives are lost? Chicago, Oakland, Baltimore etc. Don’t bring this crap here to Monrovia. - Raymond D. A. MONROVIA

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (916) 939-0772 for information regarding the trustee’s sale or visit this Internet Web site www.nationwideposting. com for information regarding the sale of this property, using the file number assigned to this case, 19-0361. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. Date: 06/02/2020 ATTORNEY LENDER SERVICES, INC. Karen Talafus, Assistant Secretary 5120 E.
