Measure J Funding Adds Accountability Through MOU John ORONA john.orona@gmail.com

The Pasadena City Council approved a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) guaranteeing at least $5 million in Measure J funding to the district next fiscal year, while continuing to leave charter schools out of the agreement despite pressure from charter school parents.

The memo identifies maintaining adequate levels of reserve funding for PUSD as the number one priority for Measure J funds. The district is mandated by the state to devote at least three percent of its overall budget to reserves or face being taken over by the Los Angeles County Office of Education.

Guild’s members are 60-70 years old, however Brisendine said that that they hope to have younger participants so that the tradition of quilting is carried on.

“Because the age span in our quilt group is about 40 years, we have learned and watched these other women,” Brisendine explained. “Now we’re here passing on our knowledge to the next generation.”

ucked away in Arcadia, female quilters uphold a longstanding American tradition Marilyn Brisendine describes as an art that is being lost to us.

In a conversation of the Wandering Foot Quilt Guild she’s been a part of for 15-17 years, my perspective of quilting quickly changed. My initial assumption, and I’m sure many would agree, was that quilting is just a hobby people participate in when they get older. Brisendine, the community chairperson for the Guild, explained that for her, quilting with her lifelong friends has provided her a space to feel supported by women like her.

“What started the club was a group of women who were friends who wanted to get together to exchange their ideas about quilting,” she said when I asked her about the Guild’s origins.

The goal of their organization is to teach quilting while giving back to the community.

Their community outreach includes making caps for preemies (premature infants), blankets for chemo patients, quilts for kids and

teenagers, and their biggest project: providing love and comfort through gifts and donations for the University of Southern California (USC) Medical center. “We give about 50-70 items a month to the USC medical center for low-income people with illnesses,” Brisendine explained.

Aside from their focus on giving back to the community, the Guild’s emphasis is on learning quilting and hand-work from each other.

“All of us have something we’re good at,” she said. “And we use that to teach each other our different skills.”

This includes new styles and patterns that each woman has learned on their own or through other women.

Sometimes, the Guild invites outside speakers or guests to

lead workshops where the women pay a fee and they set up tables and they all sew together.

Although the idea of quilting seemed daunting to me, Brisendine reassured me that regardless of my sewing skills, they welcome all who are interested in learning the craft. The best part? Joining the Guild is as easy as coming to a meeting.

Brisendine explained that in the Guild, the women made an agreement that the culture of their organization is going to be open to new members at all times. “We formed a pact at one of our knitting group meetings and we said everybody is gonna be friendly and we’re going to welcome them,” Brisendine explained about how membership works for their

organization. “It’s become so much more fun because we have members of different ages” she said.

Pasadena Man Arrested in Scheme in Which Chinese Money Allegedly Funded Marijuana Grow Houses Three men were arrested this morning on federal charges alleging they took part in a scheme that used millions of dollars wired from China to purchase seven residential homes in San Bernardino County that were converted into illegal marijuana grow houses.

The three defendants arrested today pursuant to a federal criminal complaint are: Lin Li, a.k.a. Aaron Li, 37, of Chino, the U.S.-based coordinator of the alleged scheme; Ben Chen, 42, of Alhambra, who allegedly took care of the marijuana grows; and Jimmy Yu, 44, of Pasadena, a second alleged grow house caretaker.

The complaint charges the three defendants with one count of manufacturing, distributing, and possessing with the intent to distribute marijuana. The three men are expected to make their initial appearances this afternoon in United States District Court in Los Angeles.

In conjunction with the arrests, law enforcement executed search warrants at Li’s home and seven marijuana-grow houses in Chino, Ontario and Chino Hills. As a result of the searches, authorities seized approximately 1,650 marijuana plants from several grow houses, as well as cash at Li’s house currently estimated to be at least $80,000.

Today’s takedown is the result of a 14-month investigation that was initiated by the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department and soon after was joined by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI).

In relation to the criminal charges, the U.S. Attorney’s Office, in coordination with the HSI’s Asset Identification and Removal Group, has begun the process to forfeit the seven homes where marijuana was being grown. The properties are cumulatively worth more than $5 million.

affidavit in support of the criminal complaint, Li, a real estate agent, orchestrated a scheme that purchased residential properties through transactions designed to conceal the homes’ true owners, converted the houses to marijuana grow operations, and trafficked marijuana, with most of the processed marijuana being sold to customers in California and Nevada.

After receiving financing from sources in China, Li “acted as the realtor for the

purchase of [seven residences], which he then converted into illegal marijuana grow houses,” the affidavit states.

“Li coordinated the purchase of the properties, managed them after purchase, paid their utilities and taxes, and established shell companies for the purpose of managing the properties’ finances.”

Investigators believe Li attempted to distance himself from the conspiracy by using Chen and Yu to manage day-to-day operations at the

grow houses, to help with out-of-state distribution of the marijuana, and to return marijuana sale proceeds.

Li also used bypasses to physically divert electricity directly from power lines, thus stealing power from the electric companies, hiding the grow houses’ high power usage from law enforcement, and creating fire risks in neighborhoods. According to the affidavit, Li’s attempts to insulate himself from culpability went as far as creating fake leases for some of the properties, documents that included fake tenants, forged electronic signatures, and special clauses that purported to prohibit the fake tenants from cultivating marijuana at the homes.

“In states that have decriminalized marijuana, we have seen an influx of foreign money used to establish grow operations, with much of the marijuana being destined for out-of-state consumers,” said United States Attorney Nick Hanna. “By establish-

ing illegal drug operations in residential neighborhoods, the defendants increased the risks to law-abiding homeowners, caused neighborhood blight, and stole power from utilities.”

“HSI, together with our law enforcement partners, will continue to target transnational criminal organizations that think they can use our neighborhoods as locations for criminal activity,” said Joseph Macias, Special Agent in Charge for HSI Los Angeles. “Today’s arrests and searches, coordinated jointly with the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department and the U.S. Attorney’s office, are the next step in shutting down criminals who would trash our communities for their own greed.”

Monrovia’s Paint N’ Play Hosts Free Prom Dress Drive Paint N’ Play, Monrovia will be turning its studio space into a small boutique where girls will try on prom dresses and accessories. This event takes place March 11 to May 10, Tuesdays to Fridays from 4p.m. to 7p.m. at the Paint N’ Play Art Studio at 418 S. Myrtle Ave. This prom dress drive is intended for low-income families in our community in hopes of providing that Cinderella moment every teenage girl hopes for.

This drive is also open to all area high school

seniors with a valid high school ID and parents must be present. Hair and makeup appointments will be arranged on site.

Five girls will be fitted at a time. Dress Appointments will have priority.

If anyone would like to contribute to the prom drive, donations are accepted until May 3.

ARCADIA March 3 Shortly before 8:06 a.m., an officer responded to Chevron, 500 N. Santa Anita Ave., regarding a fraud report.

The reporting party located a credit card scanning device, also known as a skimmer, installed on the cashier’s credit card reader.

March 4 At approximately 1:40 p.m., an officer responded to Dana Middle School, 1401 S. First Ave., regarding a battery report. A fight broke out between three female students resulting in all three punching each other. The school is conducting a formal investigation.

At 3:58 p.m., an officer responded to a residence in the 400 block of Columbia Road regarding a residential burglary report. Surveillance footage revealed two black males attempted to burglarize the residence but fled once they saw the security cameras.

The investigation is ongoing.

March 5 Just before 3:53 p.m., officers responded to Victoria’s Secret, 400 S. Baldwin Ave., regarding a grand theft report.

A loss prevention employee witnessed the two suspects steal $3,288 worth of merchandise. They fled in a black Ford Fusion and exited the mall through Gate 8 toward the freeway. The suspects are described as a Black female wearing a pink hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans and a Black male wearing a red hooded sweatshirt and a black beanie. The investigation is ongoing.

March 6 Shortly after 10:30 p.m., an officer responded to a residence in the 00 block of West Sierra Madre Boulevard regarding a grand theft of package report. Unknown suspect(s) stole packages containing three new Apple iPhones, a loss valued at nearly $3,400. The investigation is ongoing.

March 7 Before 11:45 a.m., an officer responded to Cement Mason, 5417 Peck Road, regarding a petty theft report.

An investigation revealed two suspects stole gardening equipment from the bed of the victim’s truck. The witness described the suspects as a Hispanic male with fair skin, a navy blue sweater, and a baseball hat with “Senior Fish” in red letters. The second suspect was a Hispanic female with dark, medium length hair. They fled in an older white SUV. The investigation is ongoing March 8 Around 8:26 a.m., an officer conducted an enforcement stop on a vehicle in the area of Huntington Drive and Colorado Place for having fraudulent registration stickers. Upon contacting the driver, the 32-year-old female from Pasadena admitted to driving without a license and being in possession of methamphetamine. The suspect was cited and released in the field.

At about 9:49 a.m., an officer responded to a residence in the 900 block of West Duarte Road regarding a residential burglary report.

Unknown suspect(s) smashed a rear window, ransacked the vacant home, and fled with a black torch adapter. No suspects were seen and no witnesses were located.

Just before 4:23 p.m., an officer responded to Rainbow Spa, 70 E. Live Oak Ave., regarding a grand theft report.

The officer discovered two male suspects entered the location and stole an employee’s purse before fleeing on foot. The suspects are described as Black males in their early twenties. The investigation is ongoing.

Shortly after 11:35 p.m., an officer responded to Arcadia Methodist Hospital, 300 W. Huntington Drive, regarding a stolen vehicle report. The victim’s vehicle was stolen from the parking lot sometime after 6:50 p.m. The investigation is ongoing.

March 9 At approximately 12:41 a.m., an officer responded to a residence in the 00 block of West Las Flores Avenue regarding a burglary report.

An investigation revealed unknown suspects entered the home by unknown means, ransacked the home, and fled with jewelry and a wall safe.

The investigation is ongoing.

MONROVIA March 3 At 9:40 a.m., a theft of luggage was reported at a hotel in the 900 block of West Huntington. The victim set his luggage out in front of the hotel and went inside.

When he came back, he saw a male Hispanic subject in his 50s running away with his luggage. He lost sight of the suspect and called the police.

The luggage contained his passports and other personal property. An area search was completed, but the suspect was not located.

At 8:03 p.m., police dispatch received a burglary alarm activation at a commercial building in the 400 block of West Maple that had been burglarized multiple times. Officers quickly responded and saw a boardedup window had been forced open. An El Monte Police Department canine unit responded to the location to assist in searching the building.

The interior was searched, but the suspect was not located.

The owner responded and reviewed surveillance video of the break-in. It appears to be the same suspect from the previous burglaries and an unknown amount of cash was taken from the tip jar. The investigation is continuing.

At 11:35 p.m., a vehicle burglary was reported in the 800 block of South Myrtle. The victim reported that someone had broken into his work vehicle. The victim saw a male and a female Hispanic inside his vehicle. The victim confronted the male suspect and began hitting him with his cane. Both suspects fled in a silver, Volkswagen hatch-

back. The victim did not find anything missing at the time.

The investigation is continuing.

March 5 At 1:23 a.m., officers responded to a traffic collision at the intersection of Shamrock and Valley View. A motorist was traveling north on Shamrock and collided into a parked vehicle near the intersection. The impact was so severe it disabled both vehicles.

The driver fled the scene on foot, but was quickly detained nearby. The driver was possibly under the influence of drugs, but due to his injuries, he was taken to a hospital for immediate medical aid.

Charges are pending and the investigation is continuing.

At 1:13 p.m., police received a call reporting a female subject trespassing at a vacant residence in the 400 block of East Maple. An officer responded and found a female subject sleeping inside the residence covered up with a blanket. An officer made contact with the subject and she said she entered the location through an unlocked door. The officer searched the location and found no signs of forced entry. The subject was arrested for trespassing; she was booked and later released on a citation.

At 11:49 p.m., Monrovia Fire and Rescue requested officers respond regarding a suspicious fire in the 900 block of Monterey. Officers arrived and found a bush had been set on fire. They were also told by fire personnel that an earlier fire had occurred in front of the Unity Center on Chestnut.

The self-serve library box had been set on fire about an hour earlier. An unknown suspect filled the book box with sticks and debris, and then lit the box on fire. The investigation is continuing.

March 6 At 12:35 a.m., police dispatch received numerous calls reporting a structure fire at a residence in the 700 block of West Colorado. Officers arrived and found the location on fire, and the fire had spread to an adjacent home.

Multiple agencies responded to assist Monrovia Fire and Rescue with firefighting efforts, including Pasadena and Arcadia Fire Departments.

Arcadia and Sierra Madre Police Departments also assisted with evacuations and traffic control. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

At 3:56 a.m., dispatch received a call reporting two subjects stealing mail from a location in the 200 Block East Foothill. They fled west on Foothill in a blue vehicle. Officers arrived and confirmed a theft had occurred. An area search was conducted, but officers were not able to locate the suspects. Investigation is continuing.

At 10:45 a.m., a female customer of a grocery store in the 600 block of West Huntington reported someone had taken her wallet and credit cards from her shopping cart while she was shopping inside the store. She discovered her wallet had been stolen when she went to checkout at the registers and pay. This investigation is continuing.

At 11:33 a.m., a theft of a purse at a grocery store in the 600 block of West Huntington was reported to police.

The female victim reported that someone had stolen her purse and credit cards from her shopping cart while she was shopping the day before on March 5. This investigation is continuing.

At 7:31 p.m., officers were dispatched to the area of Myrtle and Alta Vista regarding a male subject that appeared extremely intoxicated. They arrived and found the subject, who displayed obvious signs of intoxication. The subject was too intoxicated to care for himself and was arrested for being drunk in public. He was held for a sobering period.

March 7 At 12:03 a.m., dispatch received numerous calls reporting a structure fire at a residence in the 800 block of West Walnut. The residence was occupied by one male adult, who escaped injury. The Monrovia Fire Department arrived and put out the fire. The Police and Fire Departments are investigating the cause of the fire.

Monrovia Police Detectives were called in to assist with the investigation. The investigation is ongoing.

SIERRA MADRE March 4 An injury traffic collision involving a vehicle and a pedestrian occurred at about 6:05 p.m., in the 00 block of West Sierra Madre Boulevard.

The pedestrian was treated by the Sierra Madre Paramedics at the scene and later transported to a local hospital for further treatment.

March 6

At 11:42 a.m., the owner of an unoccupied rental home in the 400 block of East Maple called police to report a subject that had gained entry into the home somehow and was using it as their temporary residence. Officers arrived and found no-trespassing signs posted around the home. The subject inside was detained, and after an investigation, was arrested for trespassing.

At 1:30 p.m., a caller reported two motorists had just collided into one another in the 900 block of West Huntington. Officers responded and found no one was injured.

After an investigation was conducted, the party at fault was issued a citation.

Between 2:45-4:15 p.m., a petty theft occurred in the 300 block of West Highland Avenue. An unknown suspect(s) entered the victim’s garage (accessible to the public) and took a bicycle and a bicycle trailer. The suspect(s) then fled in an unknown direction by unknown means. The total loss was estimated to be about $850. The case was referred to detectives.

March 9 A residential burglary occurred in the 300 block of North Sunnyside Avenue between the hours of 5:30-6 p.m.

The case to was referred to detectives pending further investigation.

Pittance Chamber Music Presents Evensong With James Onstad Pittance Chamber Music, known for featuring the extraordinary resident artists of the Los Angeles Opera pit and stage, presents “Evensong with James Onstad,” an evening offering of beloved works

by Ralph Vaughan Williams and Johannes Brahms, as part of Pittance Chamber Music’s fifth anniversary season. The concert is set to take place in Barrett Hall at the Pasadena Conservatory of Music on March 31 at 7:30 p.m.

The program features American tenor James Onstad, pianist Paul Floyd and members of the Grammy-winning LA Opera Orchestra: violinists Ana Landauer and Grace Oh, violists Shawn Mann and Alma Fernandez, and cellist Rowena Hammill. The program will include Vaughan Williams’ “Phantasy Quintet and Four Hymns for Tenor, Viola and Piano” and Brahms’ String Quintet in G major, Op. 111.

Hailed as "sensitive and precise” and “hauntingly beautiful” by New Classic Los Angeles (LA), American tenor James Onstad is an exciting new presence on the concert and operatic stage. Recent performances include debuts with the Chicago Symphony (in Bernstein’s Mass) and the LA Philharmonic (in John Cage’s sprawling operatic epic “Europeras” - a co-production of the LA Philharmonic and The Industry). Monrovia Resident and CAL State LA Students Captivate Audiences With Afro-Latin Ensemble in ‘Setenta’ Album The renowned Cal State Los Angeles (LA) Afro-Latin Ensemble has released its second album, “Setenta,” a vibrant compilation of beloved classics and new compositions that represent the past and future of the genre.

Under the guidance of Monrovia resident and band director Professor Paul De Castro, the Cal State LA Afro Latin Ensemble has produced a passionate, sophisticated work that revels in its cultural tradition. Breezy flutes and bright trumpets, nimble and intricate percussion work and a sultry modern take on Leonard Bernstein’s “Maria” are just a few of the delights this joyful album packs.

“The goals were very high.

I didn’t accept second-rate anything,” De Castro said of the album. “We had the best

arrangements, great guest stars, and I put the pressure on the students.”

‘Setenta’ (Spanish for seventy) was named to commemorate Cal State LA’s 70th anniversary and is the second release from Aerie Records, which was launched in 2014 by Cal State LA President William A. Covino and his wife, Debbie Covino.

“The roots of Cal State LA’s Afro Latin Ensemble reach deeply into Los Angeles, and Setenta’s rich connection to the cultural fabric of our region has culminated in a work that is timeless,” President Covino said.

The group began in 1999 as a Latin jazz ensemble, founded by students who sought the advice of De Castro, a Cal State LA alumnus and faculty member in the College of Arts and

As a well-respected scholar of Afro Latin music and a talented professional pianist, De Castro was an

ideal faculty advisor for the fledgling Latin jazz ensemble.

He incorporated traditional Caribbean rhythms, particularly those from Cuba, and

invited vocalists to join the group.

Wearing signature guayabera shirts featuring the Cal State LA logo, the ensemble

has enthralled audiences at venues such as the Autry Museum and Grand Park in downtown Los Angeles. In 2000, the 22-person ensemble performed in Cuba, and 10 years later, they played before an appreciative audience of 2,000 in China.

To create “Setenta,” De Castro relied on alumni and friends of the program. He points to one of his favorite tracks on the album, “Trombonático,” as an example of that collaboration. For the trombone section, De Castro relied on former students, including Luis Bonilla, one of the premiere trombone players in the world.

San Gabriel Valley Choral Company to Perform in Monrovia Award-winning San Gabriel Valley Choral Company (SGVCC) invites the public to attend "The Living Voice," a celebration of contemporary choral music, on March 16 at 7:30 p.m. at the historic St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Monrovia (122 S. California Ave.). The choir will perform works by 20th and 21st century composers, including John Rutter, Simon and Garfunkel, Andrea Clearfield, David Dikau, settings of Langston Hughes by Ricky Ian Gordon and Harry Einhorn's hypnotic Tibetan chant. SGVCC is also proud to feature pieces by local composers Diana Woolner, Jake Roman, David Rentz and Michael Pawlicki.

SGVCC is conducted by Visiting Artistic Director Dr. David Rentz, associate professor of music at Chaffey College. In addition to

heading Chaffey's choral and vocal music programs, Dr. Rentz supervises programs in choral and orchestral conducting at Claremont Graduate University and serves as the music director of the Orchestra Collective of Orange County and co-conductor of C3LA (Contemporary Choral Collective of Los Angeles).

Music Director David Lockington and the Pasadena Symphony announce its 92nd season with an exhilarating schedule of seven concerts, running Oct. 19, 2019 through April 18, 2020.

Alongside a stellar program of celebrated classical works, the symphony is introducing its Composers Showcase for the 2019-20 season, featuring works by both emerging and established contemporary composers at each concert, including two world premiere commissions – opening the season with a piece by aspiring composer Sydney Wang and closing with a new work by Michael Abels, composer of the critically acclaimed score for the film “Get Out.” All concerts take place at Pasadena’s Ambassador Auditorium with both matinee and evening performances at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.

The season also includes the annually sold-out Holiday Candlelight Concert on Saturday, Dec. 14, 2019 with both 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. performances at All Saints Church.

The orchestra’s annual Baroque concert on Jan. 25, 2020 will showcase the triumphant return of local violinist Simone Porter in Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons” paired with Reena Esmail’s “Teen Murti.” Virtuoso violinist Nick Kendall of Time for Three will perform a oneof-a-kind concerto based on Gershwin’s “Porgy and Bess” on Feb. 15 alongside Debussy’s “La Mer” and Oscar and Grammy Award winner Michael Giacchino’s “Voyage.”

Nicholas McGegan concludes his celebrated tenure as principal guest conductor on March 21 with Mozart & McGegan, a Mozart Spectacular with Symphony No. 39 and the melodic perfection of his Piano Concerto No. 20.

Also on the March program, the orchestra will perform Caroline Shaw’s “Red, Red, Rose,” which the Pulitzer Prize-winning composer wrote for McGegan’s Philharmonia Baroque orchestra. Lockington returns to the podium on April 18 to close the season with Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 3 performed by Israeli pianist Inon Barnatan (“one of the most admired pianists of his generation” by the New York Times) plus Mussorgsky’s “Pictures at an Exhibition” and the new Abels commission.

Three Arrested by Pasadena PD During DUI Saturation Patrol On Friday night, March 8, the Pasadena Police Department conducted another citywide DUI saturation patrol program where specially trained officers were on the lookout for alcohol or drug impaired drivers.

A number of 121 vehicle enforcement stops were made throughout the operation, which ran from 6 p.m. on Friday, March 8 to 2 a.m. on Saturday, March 9.

Three people were arrested on suspicion of DUI, one of whom was under the influ-

ence of marijuana.

Individuals caught driving impaired and charged with DUI can expect the impact of a DUI arrest to be approximately $13,500.

This includes fines, fees, DUI classes, license suspension, other expenses and possible jail time.

"The number of DUI arrests this evening suggests that people are listening to DUI education and prevention efforts and are using taxi or ride share services," said Traffic Section Lieutenant Mark Goodman.

Lieutenant Goodman said that he often discusses DUI prevention with community members who tell him they regularly plan ahead when visiting restaurants or other establishments that serve alcohol.

"Advance planning and sticking to it is the key to staying safe when out on the town," said Goodman.

“We talk about school stability but all we’re really talking about at this point is moving money to prop up the reserve,” Ryan Mackey, a representative of Odyssey charter schools said. “That is the lowest possible bar you can meet.”

The second priority the MOU outlined calls for maintaining or restoring existing educational programs that might otherwise face elimination or reduction due to budget cuts. These are programs like the International Baccalaureate, Dual Language Immersion and Visual and Performing Arts. The council expects these two priorities would exhaust all Measure J funding for the first year.

The language surrounding the second priority is broad enough to allow for funding of charter schools should PUSD find it beneficial, according to the council.

“There’s nothing in the MOU that would prevent PUSD from entering into bilateral agreements with any charter school for services or to fund

programs,” City Manager Steve Mermell explained.

“The current MOU doesn’t contemplate that the city would direct that, but the district is free to make arrangements as it sees fit.”

ome readers may already recognize Meat District Co. from last November’s feature on the restaurant in the Business Spotlight. If not, head to our website - the article is called “Everything Must Go: The Reinvention of Meat District Co.”!

If you’ve never been to the restaurant, it’s got a modern, industrial atmosphere with rustic, warm touches. You can see right into the open kitchen and even the curing station, with meat hanging from hooks, in the back pantry area. The bar at the back of the restaurant is backed in white subway tiles with warmhued lighting. Behind the hostess table is a display case with golden knives and other implements.

The industrial touches are everywhere: the ashy wooden clogs on the walls, the open bulbs of the light fixtures, concrete floor. The floor length windows in the front bring in stunning rays of light from without, especially given the typically sunny Southern California mornings.

Their new brunch menu is available to peruse and choose from every Sunday from 11 am-3 pm. I’ll review the main several savory items and take you through their two sweet brunch items.

Is it California without avocado toast? Meat District serves their smashed avocado on two slices of charcoal French bread, with a colorful mixed salad of carrots, arugula, slices of cucumber and baby yellow and red cherry tomatoes. The addition of lemon and pickled red onion on top brings welcome acidity to the toast.

This avocado toast is definitely the healthy brunch option, but you can add eggs for that extra dose of brunch luxury!

Their steak and eggs was everything that I’ve always wanted steak and eggs to be. I’ve been to diners for brunch before and eyed the steak and eggs on the menu before deciding that diners’ specialties aren’t usually steak, so I’d be better off ordering

and the chili flakes complemented the tender filet wonderfully.

Their brunch menu features only two sweet brunch items, but seems an understandable decision for a restaurant with a greater focus on meat. The first of the sweet options was the picturesque French toast, made from firm, dense, two-toned bread.

It wasn’t inherently sweet, so I recommend dousing in syrup to your taste for your fill of sweetness! On the flipside, I did not think the peanut butter and jelly pancakes needed syrup - it was perfectly sweet and nuanced all on its own. Also, a perk of the pancakes? They came with a plate of two eggs however you like them and choice of bacon or eggs.

I love bacon, but I suspected that the sausage might be something out of the ordinary - and I was right! It was a cheddar jalapeño sausage that had heavier and richer taste from the cheese, with a palate-warming kick from the jalapeño in the sausage! But I digress. y recent trip to the Belmond El Encanto hotel (www.belmond. com) in Santa Barbara was highlighted by more than a luxury hotel, hidden in the hills; the getaway also introduced me to the historic Old Mission Santa Barbara and the new MOXI Museum.

Founded by Spanish Franciscans on Dec. 4, 1786, the Santa Barbara Mission (www.santabarbaramission.org) was the 10th of 21 California Missions created by the Spanish Franciscans monks. The Old Mission sits on 13 acres overlooking the ocean, and today, more than 200 years later, the Mission continues to be the chief cultural and historic landmark in the city of Santa Barbara.

To get to the mission, a friend and I walked about 10 minutes from our room at the Belmond El Encanto hotel. The walk took us through a beautiful neighborhood in the hills above the city. When we arrived

Exploring Santa Barbara’s Old Mission and New MOXI Museum at the mission we were instantly struck by the structure’s towering spires, classic Spanish California architecture with white clay and red tile roofs, and its commanding position overlooking Santa Barbara and the Pacific Ocean. It was easy to see why it has been called “Queen of the Missions.”

To begin my exploration of the Mission, I paid the $9 adult entry fee and took a self-guided tour. The grounds are highlighted by the beautiful Mission church, Historic Cemetery and Mausoleum, and multiple lush gardens, including La Huerta Historical Garden, which features authentic and ancient Mission-era plants, trees and paintings.

My first stop was the Mausoleum, which is situated in the center of the cemetery and surrounded by 200-year-old sandstone walls. Since 1893, this simple structure has served as a final resting place for Franciscan friars and a number of prominent citizens who were part of the early history of Santa Barbara. In 2011 the building underwent a massive renovation that

included the addition of a columbarium with niche spaces for inurnments of cremated remains.

The Mission also houses a nine-room museum of historical artwork and artifacts, which includes the Chumash Room, featuring Native American artifacts, along with traditional crafts and tools; a re-creation of a 17th century kitchen with original 1790’s adobe wall and 1805 front stone wall; a Padre’s bedroom with chess set, Bishop’s glasses, staff and desk set; and a Trades room with agricultural, blacksmithing, and weaving tools, as well as historical mission-era photos.

After touring the Old Mission, I drove to the MOXI Museum (www.moxi.org), Downtown Santa Barbara’s newest hands-on destination for families and curious minds of all ages. “MOXI is a place where you can explore and discover new things about the world around you, ask questions, seek answers and have a blast doing so,” says the museums website.

nized around seven themes that all relate to science, technology, engineering, arts and math.

The first thing people see when they enter the main lobby is the Sheldon Family Handprint Globe, a giant, hanging, light-filled globe that guests can put their hand prints on and see them projected on a screen.

Another cool exhibit is Sound Track, where visitors can journey inside a Giant Guitar to learn about how famous guitar riffs are created. Guests can then take control of the Reactable, part digital DJ table, part futuristic musical instrument. They can also experience Hollywood magic and step into Foley

Studios to create their own sound effects for a popular film clip.

Photography in the Facetune Era: Lyd and Mo Husband-and-wife team up to offer timeless portraits and more

“W

hen photographing portraits, you have to bring out the essence of a person,” says Mo Cee, co-owner with his wife Lydia Tam of Lyd and Mo Photography in Pasadena.

“Too often I see photographers too focused on their gear—but photography is having a connection with the subject.”

You’ve probably seen Lyd and Mo’s work without knowing it. These three-time “Best of Pasadena” winners have carved out a name for themselves around town, working with many local businesses, nonprofits, entertainers, even the Doo Dah Parade.

But capturing an “essence” that jives with the subject’s view of themselves requires a lot of finesse, especially in 2019.

“The rise of phone photography hasn’t impacted our business financially, but

you’d be surprised at how much Photoshop people want done. People look like enemy versions of themselves!” jokes Mo. Lyd explains it is part of the reason why the couple works so well as a team.

“Getting a great portrait is about flexibility and keeping someone calm. If we see they’re nervous, we slow down and let them be themselves,” she says, noting how she tracks outward details so Mo can focus on shooting. “I make sure we don’t lose the narrative along the way. A little art direction can do a lot to show someone’s confidence.”

In addition to her skill as a photographer, Lyd’s corporate background supplies a business mindset to the studio, while Mo brings more than 25 years of experience behind the camera. The pair focuses heavily on business, fashion, events and lifestyle photography, but both have their favorite projects—Lyd favors weddings while Mo enjoys environmental portraits. Their sizeable studio sits snugly in Pasadena’s Playhouse District, affording them

a higher level of exposure than they might have had otherwise.

“We’ve only been here four years, but we've risen up as someone to notice and host a lot of activities and events,” says Mo, “including free singer/songwriter showcases the last Friday of every month,

music workshops, creative dance, even free meditation classes.” The community can also walk in simply to enjoy Lyd and Mo’s work.

“It’s a public space, a gallery,” explains Lyd. Plus, coffee and tea are always available to any passerby. “We have an open door policy.”

What those passersby will see are the faces—styled, certainly, but real—of the many Lyd and Mo clients the pair has shot over the years. As artists, they also understand the practical use of a good portrait—and even with the impact of celebrity and social media on our outward appear-

ances, the couple remains hopeful about photography’s future.

Arcadia’s Mardi Gras Food Fest Raises $230K for Cancer Services at Methodist Hospital The Methodist Hospital Foundation’s 24th annual Mardi Gras Food Fest was held on March 5 at Sirona’s Restaurant in Santa Anita Park, raising more than $230,000 for cancer services at Methodist Hospital of Southern California, a record high for this annual beads and boa celebration.

A sell-out crowd of 1,100 people attended Mardi Gras, which also set records for

highest attendance in the 24-year history of the event.

The Foundation honored internal medicine specialist Dino Clarizio, MD, and his wife, Hope, as the honorary King and Queen of Mardi Gras.

A record 67 event sponsors, led by Mardi Gras title sponsors Arcadia Gardens Retirement Hotel and Arcadia Healthcare Center, helped fill the room.

Event co-chairs Sophia Chan, Mark Hafeman and Patty Soldo and the members of the 2019 Mardi Gras committee created a festive party atmosphere for all to enjoy.

Pasadena Chamber Of Commerce Arcadia High School Student-Run Returns to Eliot Arts Magnet With $Ixth Podcast Wins CalSPRA Award of Merit Grade ¢ents Financial Literacy Workshops Five-week program included information on the finance, budgeting, credit, banking and more from program partner Wells Fargo The Pasadena Chamber of Commerce and Civic Association undertook the sixth year of its $ixth Grade ¢ents financial literacy program for sixth graders at Eliot Arts Magnet. “We were very pleased to be invited back to Eliot Arts Magnet for a sixth year of financial literacy workshops for sixth graders,” said Pasadena Chamber CEO Paul Little. “Every sixth grader at Eliot is getting basic information on financial literacy, including budgeting, banking, credit and finance.”

For most of the program, volunteers from local branches of Wells Fargo provide insights and information on money handling, budgeting, savings, banking and credit. The representatives of the bank have ties to the local community and reflect the students they are interacting with. A few presenters are alumni of Eliot.

Video may rule social media, but a new platform is on the rise: podcast.

This is something Arcadia High School’s Podcast Team knows all too well, especially after winning recognition from the California Schools Public Relations Association (CalSPRA).

But who exactly is behind the now award-winning podcast, “Keepin’ It Arcadia”?

The podcast team is made up of a group of passionate interns who are part of the Arcadia Unified Digital Communications Internship (DCI), led by junior Jeffrey Lee. Lee, who was one of the original podcast team members, now leads a team of 12 high-schoolers, ranging from freshmen to seniors, all of whom were very much taken by surprise when AHS principal, Dr. Brent Forsee, walked in to help present the award. After overcoming his initial shock, Lee gave a brief but heartfelt speech, emphasizing his genuine gratitude that his “team’s hard work was recognized,” calling it

Though the podcast team may be making its way to success now, things weren’t always so easy. “One of our biggest difficulties was getting the whole operation off the ground,” recalled Lee, “when we first started, the team had little experience in podcasts and had to do a lot of research to put everything together, piece by piece.” Lee explains that he himself volunteered to manage the podcast out of a passion for talking and learning about unique things rather than a particular aptitude

for podcasting, and got “hooked to the rewarding experience of podcasting” only after releasing his first episode.

The podcast team actually first came together after the Arcadia Unified (AUSD) Chief Communication Officer and DCI adviser Ryan Foran started his own PR podcasts and discovered the rapidly growing popularity of podcasts. Originally, the podcast was going to be run by Amber Nuuvali, the public information specialist, and himself, but they “wanted more student voice and input” in the district’s social media presence to make it truly “by the students, for the students.” And truly, the students run the podcast almost completely independently, with little supervision from their advisers.

read articles about candidates who are ghosting employers. They’re not showing up to interviews. They’re not showing up on their first day. They’re disappearing and employers are frustrated. On top of the ghosting phenomenon, employers can’t seem to find enough qualified candidates.

It’s like there just aren’t any good people left.

If you’re a hiring manager and you’re having trouble hiring, here are a few tips.

First, think back to the last time you looked for a job. I’m not talking about the time a friend called and offered you something you didn’t know was open. I’m talking about the last time you felt down and out. I’m talking about a time when you were applying to everything you could find and were pinning your entire future on each interview.

Remember how crazy that

time felt? How vulnerable it felt? Keep that in mind and do your best to treat everyone you interview with the same level of respect you would want to receive.

Make it easy to apply.

Don’t you hate those long online applications? So do job seekers. Make the process easy and you’ll have more candidates to pick from.

If you’re going to ask candidates to take tests as part of the interview process, think hard about it. Personality tests and IQ tests are not perfect indicators of future performance. But they’re a sure fire way to turn off candidates. If you decide that tests are for you, at least save them until late in the interview process. Don’t force candidates to devote time to your screening process if you’re not committed to investing time first.

Be flexible with candidates. I’m not talking about interviewing candidates on the weekend but when you offer times for interviews give more than one day and more

than one time. Schedule interviews a few days ahead of time, so the candidate will have time to reorganize their schedule. Don’t force the job seeker to pick between their existing commitments and you. They don’t even know you yet.

Follow through on your commitments. If you tell the job seeker that you’ll let them know something next week, then let them know something next week. If next week comes and you don’t have the update yet, let them know that. They’ll understand.

To me, one of the Bible’s most tragic passages is Exodus 1:18, which reads: “Now there arose up a new king over Egypt, who knew not Joseph.”

No one will ever know of course, but I believe that if the new king had known about Joseph (the Hebrew who, centuries earlier, rescued Egypt from a sevenyear famine), he would not have reigned as the oppressor of Hebrews but would instead have looked kindly upon them, since it was their ancestral kinsman who delivered Egypt from that calamity.

I have used this short introduction only to illus-

trate how sad it is to forget someone whose memory should remain in our hearts.

It gladdens me, therefore, that Monrovia has honored Pam Fitzpatrick with a memorial bench.

Thus, unlike Joseph who was forgotten by the king of Egypt, our dear Pam Fitzpatrick will not be forgotten by the citizenry of Monrovia, the town which she loved so much.

Monarch butterflies by the thousand. Yes! I said thousand.

Dear Editor, A cloud sent shade over my property this morning. I looked up for a cloud but saw hundreds upon hundreds of baby monarchs flying in a

group overhead.

I rushed to grab my camera and ran outside to look for the source. Across the street at Longden Preschools parking lot trees is where they were coming from and flying west overhead towards Longden School by me. I was only able to photograph small clusters but they have been flying from those trees now for hours.

My neighbor saw a huge group last week down the street.

Could this be great news for preservation in Temple City? Are they growing in one of our trees like they do in Northern California? It’s a huge tourist market at this sight.

Are we along their path only? How can we find out or who do we call?
