It’s the year of the ‘pig’s ear,’ my dear… Terry MILLER & Susan MOTANDER

A

sk any self-deprecating cockney in London what his beverage of choice might be, and you’d be hard pressed to find one who didn’t say, “Well, it’s a pig’s ear mate?” That definitive statement seems most appropriate now as it is, in fact, the year of the pig according to the Chinese Lunar calendar. Now, for those of you who are divided by a common language, “Pig’s Ear” is British colloquial for beer. For brevity, a Londoner might say “can I buy you a pig?” The ever brilliant rhyming slang is believed to have originated in the mid-19th century in the East End of London, no doubt after a snifter or two. This wonderful history has now been passed to this side of the pond. The enormous growth of the craft beer breweries in the states is now a multi-billion dollar business. So put on your “whistle and flute” (suit), take the “trouble and strife” (wife), and pop down to your local pub down the “frog and toad” (road) here in Monrovia. For by mid-March, there will be no less than four remarkable

Monrovia Resident Harold Shellum Celebrates 100 Years Terry MILLER tmiller@beaconmedianews.com

Former Army Air Corps Meteorologist, Harold Joseph Shellum was born Feb. 16, 1919 and yet he still swims twice a week at Monrovia’s YMCA. Perhaps this, and good genes, help Harold achieve this major milestone in life. On Wednesday, Shellum was treated to

a birthday party put on by his extended family at the YMCA where well wishes friends and one of his two daughters helped him revel in the fact that he’s achieved such notoriety. Dementia Friendly Monrovia is Making Strides in Helping People Cope Susan MOTANDER motander@yahoo.com

A few months ago a new organization, Dementia Friendly Monrovia (DFM) was formed as an offshoot of the Monrovia Senior Providers Group. In these few months much progress has been made in this forming this group. They have formed an action team and been recognized by Dementia Friendly

American, the national parent organization. The organization has even been listed as a community organization on the city of Monrovia’s website. The group has completed the first of four phases in making the Monrovia community Dementia Friendly. They are now working on Phase 2 with an online survey. They have SEE DEMENTIA PAGE 13
