Rain did not keep local residents, the Planning & Community Development staff and council members in the City of Pasadena from the Lincoln Avenue community walking tour that was scheduled on Feb. 2. Councilmember Tyron Hampton made sure to communicate that the meeting to discuss the specific plan for this particular area would not be postponed due to weather. But what do you do to make the best out of a stormy situation?

You improvise. The event ended up turning into a virtual walking tour and thanks to the hospitality of Principal Lawton Gray everyone in attendance was able to stay warm and dry inside John Muir High School.

The Planning and Community Development Department currently have a hefty agenda as they continue to work on coordinating community workshops to discuss the specific plans for a total of eight areas in the City of Roses. o action was taken Monday by Pasadena council regarding the underground utility program to clear our streets of the thousands of power poles and lines that adorn Pasadena neighborhoods.

As you may recall, infamous Danny Wooten embezzled funds from that very program and subsequently is now behind bars for the massive embezzlement scheme that

went undetected for years.

On March 14, 2016, Pasadena city staff presented a recommendation to the City Council to discontinue the Underground Utility Districts Program upon completion of the Hill Avenue and Alpine Street Underground Utility Districts and suspend collection of the Underground Surtax.

Bring family and friends to enjoy upbeat parade performances and plenty of free post-parade fun and entertainment. This year’s theme is “For the Culture – Celebrating Our Excellence.”

Maryvale, an agency dedicated to child welfare, will honor Sierra Madre City Treasurer Mike Amerio at their Restoring Hope Golf Tournament. Held at the San Gabriel Country Club on March 25, the fundraiser supports Maryvale’s residential, early education and community-based programs for children.

Amerio, who has served as treasurer for the City of Sierra Madre since 2016, joined Maryvale’s Finance Committee in 2010 and was elected to the Board of Directors as treasurer in 2014. As managing partner of Pasadena-based Lucas, Horsfall - Accountants and Advisors, Amerio works with privately-held companies in industries such as manufacturing and distribution, construction, insurance brokerages and nonprofits.

“I get more satisfaction out of my involvement with Maryvale than anything else I do,” says Amerio. “I’m glad to lend my expertise to ensure Maryvale continues to provide hope for these children and families. That has incredible meaning.”

Monrovia Represents Group On Measure W Watershed Subcommittee Revised enhanced watershed management program has secured conditional approval This past week marked a huge milestone for Monrovia on the storm water quality compliance front, new developments occurred.

LA County coordinated various voting seminars to fill municipal seats on the Watershed Area Steering Committees (WASCs) that will be responsible for recommending storm water

projects funding through Measure W. Monrovia was selected to serve as the primary municipal representative on the Rio Hondo WASC, and as the alternative municipal representative on the upper San Gabriel River WASC. Monrovia will have the front row seat in the process of determining what storm water projects get funded through Measure W.

The second development is, after several years of hard work to update the Enhanced Watershed Management Program (EWMP) to achieve storm water compliance.

Monrovia Unified Elementary Schools Host Students from China More than 100 students from Jiangsu Province, China, visited Monrovia Unified (MUSD) as a part of the culture immersion program from Jiangsu Education Services for International Exchange (JESIE).

Over four days, these international students visited Mayflower, Plymouth, and Bradoaks Elementary.

At Plymouth Elementary, a Mandarin Dual Immersion school, students quickly connected with international students as they shared the obstacles they face when learning a new language.

“Our Mandarin Dual Immersion students had an even greater opportunity to learn about the language and culture of China, and apply what they have learned throughout the school year,” Plymouth Principal Dr. Gero said. “We are grateful to have had the chance to host such a wonderful group of international students.”

In addition to day-today school activities, principals coordinated field trips to Canyon Park, Monrovia’s Public Library, and Monrovia’s Fire Department Headquarters to give students a taste of the community.

“It is very important that our administrators, teacher and staff explore and experience Chinese culture, as well as our students,” said Connie Wu, MUSD’s assistant superintendent

of business services. “This helps ensure we provide a robust Mandarin Dual Immersion program.”

MUSD began its partnership with JESIE a couple of years ago when the district cosponsored the 13th Jiangsu International

Forum for School Principals in Los Angeles in 2017, and was then invited to Jiangsu Province to participate in the 14th Jiangsu International Forum. At the time, MUSD established sister schools with Gulou District, which is one of the top

school districts in Jiangsu, China.

Sister schools present an opportunity for international students to experience school in the U.S. for four days.

“We are very fortunate to have the opportunity to partner with JESIE,” MUSD Board President Ed Gililland said. “We are committed to ensuring our dual immersion program continues to not only grow, but also provides our students with meaningful cultural experiences.”

At MUSD, dual immersion programs create a connection to academic success, while challenging students to not only learn about new cultures, but appreciate them as well.

“Dual language programs benefit our students’ educational achievement,” Superintendent Katherine Thorossian said. “From an early age they are diving into new cultures and developing social and learning skills that will help prepare them for opportunities in the future. This visit from their international peers is an invaluable experience that students will carry with them for years to come.”

ARCADIA Jan. 29 Just before 10:45 a.m., an officer responded to 400 S. Baldwin Ave. regarding a vehicle burglary report. The officer discovered an unknown suspect broke the rear passenger window of the vehicle and stole a backpack and credit card. No suspects were seen and no witnesses were located.

Jan. 30 At about 3:18 p.m., an officer responded to the Santa Anita Race Track (SART), 285 W. Huntington Drive, regarding a trespassing report. SART security found the suspect hiding in the bushes. He had previously been arrested for trespassing at the track. The SART security employee searched the suspect and located two glass methamphetamine pipes. The 38-year-old male from Arcadia was arrested and transported to the Pasadena Police Station for booking.

Jan. 31 Around 8:29 a.m., an officer responded to a residence in the 1200 block of Valencia Way regarding a mail theft report. The officer determined unknown suspect(s) pried open the victim’s mail box and stole an unknown amount of mail.

No suspects were seen and no witnesses were located.

Feb. 1 Just before 4:42 p.m., an officer responded to a residence in the 600 block of Fairview Avenue regarding a battery report. An investigation revealed a physical altercation occurred between a boyfriend and girlfriend, and the boyfriend struck and chocked the victim. The 50-year-old male from Arcadia was arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking.

MONROVIA Jan. 27 At 12:49 a.m., a caller reported a loud argument coming from a residence in the 700 block of West Foothill. Officers arrived and spoke with male and female subjects, who were boyfriend and girlfriend. They were at local bar drinking with friends and they got into an argument. When they returned home, the argument escalated into a physical altercation, and the female scratched the male subject’s face, causing physical injury. She was arrested for domestic violence.

At 9:44 a.m., a resident in the 100 of North Alta Vista reported a suspicious male subject looking around the area.

Officers arrived and located the subject. The subject provided his identifying information and police dispatch discovered he had two outstanding warrants for his arrest. During a search of the subject, he was found to be in possession of drug paraphernalia and methamphetamine. He was arrested and taken into custody.

At 8:51 p.m., a caller reported a domestic disturbance in the 300 block of Linwood.

Officers arrived and spoke with the family. The investigation revealed the wife came home intoxicated and started arguing with the husband. During the argument, the wife began hitting the husband and grabbed a kitchen knife. He ran into the bedroom and closed the door. The wife dropped the knife and the husband came out of the room. When the husband attempted to leave the house, the wife started pushing him and the motherin-law intervened and started fighting with the wife. The wife was arrested for domestic battery and brandishing a knife.

Feb. 2 Jan. 28 Shortly after 9:14 a.m., an officer responded to 24 Hour Fitness, 125 N. First Ave., regarding a vehicle burglary report. The victim stated her passenger window was smashed and the suspect fled with her

At 9:33 a.m., a motorist reported his vehicle had just been struck by another motorist in the 700 block of West Walnut. The other motorist failed to stop and fled the area.

Officers arrived and searched for the suspect, but were unable to locate him. The victim was not injured. This investigation is continuing.

At 1:37 p.m., a resident in the 200 block of West Scenic reported he had been receiving several calls from various people claiming he owed them money. The resident believed he had provided one of the callers his bank account information to cover the cost of what he thought he owed; however, no money had been taken from the account. Officers advised the resident to change his bank account numbers, which he did.

Jan. 29 At 1:36 p.m., an employee from a business in the 1600 block of South Mountain called police to report a male subject was cutting security tags off of items. As the subject tried to leave, a loss prevention employee stopped him and escorted him to their office.

Officers arrived and arrested the subject for shoplifting. He was also found to have an outstanding warrant for his arrest.

At 5:04 p.m., an employee from a business in the 900 block of West Foothill called police to report a female subject that entered the store, concealed items and left without paying. Officers responded and saw a female matching the description, including a male subject. The two were detained, but no theft could be established. A computer check revealed both subjects had outstanding warrants for their arrest. The female had syringes in her possession. Both subjects were arrested.

At 9:19 p.m., an attempt robbery was reported in the 100 block of West Cherry. The victim called to report that while he was sitting in his vehicle with his girlfriend, a male subject in dark clothing approached them and demanded their phones and wallets. The male victim exited his vehicle and was scratched on the face with an unknown object. The suspect fled on foot without any property. The investigation is continuing.

Jan. 30

At 1:36 p.m., an employee from a business in the 400 block of West Maple reported a burglary to the business. An unknown suspect entered the business through a broken window from a previous burglary during closing hours. The suspect stole items and fled on a scooter, wearing a red ball cap with a white logo on the bill.

The investigation is continuing.

PASADENA Jan. 6 At 12:57 p.m., Pasadena PD received a call in the 1500 block of El Sereno Avenue regarding shots fired. Officers arrived but did not locate the suspect. They discovered the victim and suspect were married that the suspect physically assaulted the victim the day before. The suspect also threatened to return and shoot at the house. One morning, the suspect entered the residence, armed with a firearm.

He pointed the gun at the victim and fired one round which struck a television. The victim was not injured but the suspect fled before officers arrived.

After a brief investigation the officer located the suspect in a Pasadena residence and was later taken into custody. The firearm was recovered by Pasadena PD Officers.

At 4:25 p.m., a sergeant on patrol in the 3000 block of Foothill Boulevard saw a vehicle being driven by a known parolee. A traffic stop was initiated, but the suspect failed to yield and a short pursuit took place. The police helicopter responded and the pursuit went into tracking mode. The suspect attempted to evade arrest, but stopped his vehicle behind a business in the area of Foothill Boulevard and Altadena Drive, and ran. The helicopter was able to direct officers to the suspect who was taken into custody without incident.

The suspect was arrested for evading, not having a driver’s license and forgery.

Jan. 11 At 9:08 a.m., officers saw a wanted residential burglar

in the 3800 block of east Colorado Boulevard who ran into a motel room occupied by two additional people. The suspect was arrested, as well as the two other subjects for identity theft and receiving stolen property.

The suspects were booked at the city jail as multiple search warrants were served. During the investigation, officers recovered items including: stolen mail and documents from victims of residential burglaries that occurred in Pasadena since December 2018. Detectives suspect personal paperwork stolen during the residential burglaries was used in at least two identity theft cases.

Detectives are investigating the suspects’ involvement in over ten cases involving residential burglaries and identity theft.

Jan. 18 At 10:44 p.m., Pasadena PD received a call about shots being fired in the 900 block of Raymond Avenue. Officers checked the area and spoke to three teenagers who stated a mid-size (light color) SUV drove past the location and yelled gang slurs. One round was fired from the vehicle as victims were sitting in a vehicle parked at the curb. One expended shell casing was also recovered from the scene and there were no injuries.

Jan. 19 At 3:42 a.m., Pasadena PD received multiple calls about shots being fired in the 100 block of north Hudson Avenue.

Upon arrival, officers did not locate any victims, but found expended shell casings. Residents heard three to five shots and a car screeching away from the area.

Jan. 21 At 8:55 p.m., Pasadena PD received multiple calls of shots fired at the north side of Jackie Robinson Park. The suspect was described as a male driving a black SUV. Additional information was received that a potential victim had returned fire at the suspect. When officers arrived on scene, the suspect and victims had fled the area. Numerous expended shell casings were located in the north parking lot of the park.

No victims were located and

it does not appear that anyone was hit by the gun fire.

Jan. 23 At 1:18 p.m., four to five subjects entered the T-Mobile store in the 3600 block of East Foothill Boulevard and ripped a dozen cellular phones and an I-pad from security cables that were attached to the devices.

The suspects fled to an awaiting vehicle as a witness took photographs. Responding officers tracked the stolen merchandise and directed officers from San Bernardino PD to the moving vehicle that was located in a Home Depot parking lot in the 700 block of north D Street, San Bernardino, Calif. Four subjects were detained in the vehicle and the stolen merchandise was recovered, along with a loaded handgun that was found in the passenger compartment. All four suspects were arrested and the investigation is on-going.

SIERRA MADRE Jan. 29 A resident came into the Sierra Madre Police Department to report her vehicle had been tampered with. The victim’s vehicle was parked in a designated parking stall in the 300 block of North Lima Street, from Jan. 28 at about 5:50 p.m. to Jan. 29 at about 10:30 A.M. Case referred to detectives.

Jan. 30 A theft from a vehicle occurred in the 100 block of North Canon Avenue. The suspect(s) stole tools from an unsecured tool box in the bed of the truck.

The suspect(s) also smashed the left rear window of the vehicle and took approximately $700 worth of power tools that were in the back seat in the cab of the truck. .

Feb. 2 An illegal dumping of miscellaneous building supplies occurred outside of a business in the 200 block of West Sierra Madre Boulevard that was later discovered to have been dumped by four men, driving a newer model pick-up truck, at about 9:05 p.m. the evening of Feb. 1.

Did You Know Someone Else Refused to Give up Their Seat Before Rosa Parks?

According to PBS, several women before the infamous Rosa Parks refused to give up their seat on the bus. One of them was a woman named Claudette Colvin; she was only fifteen at the time. Nine months before Parks made her protest, a bus driver ordered Colvin to get up and she recalled, “It felt like Sojourner Truth was on one side pushing me down, and Harriet Tubman was on the other side of me pushing me down. I couldn’t get up.” Because of this she arrested and thrown in jail. Colvin is one of the four women who challenged segregation. This struggle to end segregation was mostly fought by young people, however, it is speculated that Parks was the more suitable icon for the movement because of her position in the NAACP and as a respected person to her community.

T

he constitution of the United States starts with three famous words: “We the people.” Coincidentally, those three words also begin the name of Arcadia High School’s (AHS) We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution team. Over this past weekend, its brilliant members competed at the state competition but unfortunately did not advance to the national competition. But first, what does this team do?

We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution team, also known as Gov Team or Constitution Team, is part of a nationwide program sponsored by the Center for Civic Education. The team is divided into six units of 3-6 high school seniors, with each unit specializing in one area of the constitution, ranging from the Bill of Rights to modern day applications of the Constitution. Though specifics vary from school to school, the team is a yearlong course combined with AHS’s Advanced Placement U.S. Government and Economics class.

In the past, AHS’s team has qualified to nationals multiple times and even took home the national championship in 2010. This year, the team snagged first place at the regional level competition in order to move on to states.

Early Friday morning, Gov Team members and their adviser and AHS history teacher, Ms. Megan Leahy, boarded a bus and made their way up to Sacramento.

Monrovia’s Plymouth Elementary Celebrates Chinese New Year With a Family Night The Plymouth Elementary Chinese New Year Family Night is being hosted by their school's PTA, and the event's co-chairs have been hard at work creating a fun and entertaining evening for their school. The evening will start with performances from Plymouth students. There will be complimentary tea, hot cocoa, Chinese New Year candies, and oranges (which are considered to be good fortune for the Chinese New Year). They will also have an Asian food truck on site.

Lunar New Year is the most important holiday in Chinese culture, and they feel that it is vitally important to their DI (Dual Immersion) curriculum to bring some of the traditional Chinese New Year energy, colors, tastes, and sounds to our students through this Family Night celebration. They believe that experiencing Chinese culture greatly enhances students' learning of the Chinese language, and students are actively using

their verbal and written skills to learn songs and make props for their performances. This year, their co-chairs have made it a priority to extend this cultural experience beyond their DI classrooms to also include their English-only classes. Their hope is that this event enriches the learning and experiences of their entire campus.

Blair High School’s $28.4 million project funded by Measure TT Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) Superintendent Brian McDonald and Pasadena Mayor Terry Tornek plan to join PUSD board members, representatives from the City of Pasadena and community organizations, students, families, teachers, staff, and alumni at a ribbon-cutting ceremony and celebration of Blair High School's newly renovated high school campus on Wednesday, Feb. 6.

“The extensive renovation of the high school building, along with the upgraded track and field, deliver enhanced learning and athletic opportunities for students,” said Superintendent McDonald.

development and growth of well-rounded students who are ready to succeed in the 21st century.”

Blair School serves 978 students in grades 6-12 and is an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School, offering three IB programs (Diploma, Career-related, and Middle Years), a Health

Careers Academy, a Spanish Dual Language Program, and the district’s International Academy.

Pasadena Unified Asks Families to Take the 2019 Community Survey In 2019, PUSD is conducting a series of surveys to gather input from students, parents, staff, and community members as part of the development of the Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP).

The State of California has changed the way education is funded. California now requires school districts to develop a Local Control and

Accountability Plan (LCAP).

The LCAP requires school districts to gather input from students, teachers, parents, community members, and public agencies to determine the goals, actions, and budget priorities for the district. Give your input during this important process.

The LCAP must focus on eight areas identified as state priorities. The plan

will also demonstrate how the district's budget will help achieve the goals, and assess each year how well the strategies in the plan were able to improve outcomes.

In addition to these eight areas, PUSD may also identify and incorporate in its plan goals related to our own local priorities. To take the 2019 LCAP Community Survey, go to pusd.us/Page/777.

Sierra Madre Playhouse Plans a Busy 2019 Season The Sierra Madre Playhouse has plans for an actionpacked year, with a full slate of main stage shows in addition to bonus attractions.

First, the main stage schedule: - “Tuesdays with Morrie,” written by Jeffrey Hatcher and Mitch Albom, will run Feb. 23- March 31. .The play will be directed by L. Flint Esquerra and star Larry Eisenberg and Jackson Kendall.

- “Stuart Little,” adapted

by Joseph Robinette, will run March 16- April 27. The play, based on the book by E.B. White, will be directed

by Sierra Madre Playhouse Artistic Director Christian Lebano. This will be the sixth annual Theater for Young Audiences offering.

‘Othello’ Takes the Stage at A Noise Within May s. ruiz MayChu@att.net

illiam Shakespeare’s ‘Othello,’ A Noise Within’s fifth production in its 20182019 season, will be on stage from February 10 through April 28. Directed by Jessica Kubzansky, it stars Wayne T. Carr in the title role, Angela Gulner as Desdemona, Tania Verafield as Emilia, and Michael Manuel as Iago.

A few weeks into rehearsals, Manuel graciously agrees to share with us his thoughts about this classic play and the character he is about to inhabit.

“I did Othello 20 years ago and I played Cassio,” Manuel recalls. “This time I’m Iago. Any time you play a bad guy you can’t think of the character as bad. Even the most evil people believe they’re doing the best they could under the circumstances. For Iago, there are events that push him into that place where he’s just coping with everything that’s happening to him.

There’s an inherent frustration, feeling ‘less than’ and being slighted, in some way, that he hasn’t gotten what he deserves.

“Looking back, I don’t really remember much about that first time I did ‘Othello.’

I did Cassio when I was fresh out of college when I felt I knew everything there was to know, that I’ve figured it all out. Then, I finally grasped that I hardly knew anything; there are so many other layers in both characters that I learned from just living 20 more years since.”

sharing his feelings. I would like to be able to convince everyone on that stage that I’m being truthful and that I believe in everything I’m saying. People can tell when someone isn’t sincere.

I think Iago understands people – he might not be book smart but he is clever.”

Asked if he wants audiences to hate or empathize with Iago, Manuel replies, “I want them to understand there was no other way for me to behave. Part of what I would like for the audience to say is, ‘I wanted to hate him but I like him’ or ‘I can’t believe I like someone who’s so awful.’ I wouldn’t go so far as justifying my actions, so much as showing our commonality. That we share all the same feelings – they’re what make us humans.

“Shakespeare’s plays have

endured through the years because they’re timeless.

Everything that was relevant at that time is still relevant today. The feelings that we have – jealousy, anger, revenge, pettiness – all these are innate in everyone, then and now. That’s the reason for classical theatre – the message resonates with everyone.”

We can all agree with Manuel.

Shakespeare’s genius is that he perfectly captures the essence and the complexity of human behavior. When we watch his plays, we recognize ourselves and empathize with the characters on stage – we are all capable of heroic actions as much as we succumb to deplorable deeds. And that, ultimately, our doing or undoing comes down to how we choose to act at any given moment.

Nature & Technology Collide to Produce Art in Arcadia Dazzling contemporary art nights from Feb. 27-March 3 Digital Nature 2019 is an art exhibit featuring unique, site-specific artworks projected onto the night landscape of the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden.

Digital Nature 2019 is

“Silver 25th Anniversary” is this year’s theme for Arcadia High School’s annual Orchestra Benefit Dinner and Concert. This annual event will take place on Saturday, Feb. 23, 2019, at the Arcadia Masonic Center (50 W. Duarte Road). The hors d’oeuvres reception and silent auction begin at 5:30 p.m. Dress is formal attire.

Twenty-five years ago, a group of “orchestra moms” proposed an idea to showcase the orchestra program. Over the years, this event has evolved into a successful fundraiser for the Arcadia Music Club.

The program begins with a catered dinner and is followed by entertainment featuring string ensembles from the Arcadia High School Orchestras. Also performing are special guest artists Isaiah Gage, cellist, featured on the musical scores of numerous television shows and films; and violinist Grace Rodgers whose musical career spans from classical to pop and includes many studio recordings and live productions. The unique grand finale showcases all 300 orchestra performers completely surrounding the guests.

Funds raised from this

event provide orchestra necessities (coaching, musical instruments, materials and supplies) that may not otherwise be available to the orchestra program. There are four ways to support the event: purchase event tickets, purchase program book advertisement by Feb. 1, become a benefactor, or donate silent auction items.

Premium seats are $65 while reserved tickets are $55. The deadline to purchase tickets is Feb. 15.

Pasadena’s Traffic Enforcement Program Nets 195 Citations On Friday, Feb. 1, 2019, officers assigned to the Pasadena Police Department Traffic Section conducted a traffic enforcement program throughout the city of Pasadena. Officers were on the lookout for dangerous driving behavior including speeding, red light violations, right of way violations, and other violations that lead to traffic collisions. The goals of these programs are to enhance public safety through enforcement and education.

Officers conducted enforcement at various locations during the program, which ran from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. “Many of the locations we visit are suggested to us by members of the community who see dangerous driving behaviors almost every day,” said Traffic Section Lieutenant Mark Goodman. “We use the information to assist in placing our resources wisely and to encourage

community interaction with the Police Department.” Lieutenant Goodman reports that citizens frequently stop to thank officers monitoring driving at problem locations reported by community members to the police department.

“Keep the suggestions coming,” said Goodman.

“They are appreciated!”

Friday’s program netted a total of 195 citations, 74 of which were for speeding. Four people were cited for running a red light, and the remaining 117 cites were issued for other dangerous driving such as right of way violations and failing to stop for posted stop signs.

Funding for this traffic enforcement program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The Pasadena Chamber of Commerce release results from a survey of its members concerning the impact of the city’s minimum wage requirements. The survey was conducted in January and 416 of its members, out of 2,000 who received the survey, responded.

The Chamber now encourages the City Council to defer to the state schedule and not further increase the minimum wage in Pasadena. According to the Chamber, this change “would lessen the negative impact on employment opportunities, especially for low-wage and low skilled workers and create a more stable environment for Pasadena small businesses.”

“In the past three years we have seen the minimum wage increase by more than 30 percent. During that same period, we have seen overall payroll expenditures remain static while the number of businesses, including those that employ minimum wage workers, also remain the same,” said Pasadena Chamber CEO Paul Little.

impacts of the minimum wage increase verify what our poll respondents said: the same number of employees are earning the same amount of money, which means they are working less in 2019.”

According to the poll, this is how the 416 responders adjusted to the recent local minimum wage increases: - 18 percent did not make adjustments as a result of the increase.

- 40 percent decreased their workforce.

- 41 percent did not hire new employees.

- 38 percent did not hire temporary or seasonal youth employees.

- 11 percent decreased operating hours.

- 54 percent raised prices (more than 90 percent also reduced employee hours/

payroll).

- 7 percent changed the way they interact with customers (more online sales, etc.).

- 9 percent relocated outside Pasadena.

- 3 percent closed.

- 4 percent expanded to attract more customers.

- 29 percent found other ways to reduce expenses (more aggressively bid out supplies, forego health insurance, reduce employee benefits, no employee bonuses, cut marketing expenses, expand off-site services that require fewer employees, reduced donations to local non-profits, renegotiate vendor costs.

Pasadena Therapist Under Arrest For Sexual Assault On Saturday, Nov. 17, 2018 an adult, female victim reported to the Pasadena Police she was sexually assaulted by a marriage and family licensed therapist, suspect, Edgar Gustavo Villamarin, during her appointment that took place on Friday, Nov. 16, 2018 at his office located in Pasadena at 100 Orange Pl. Pasadena Police detectives continued the investigation and an additional follow

up yielded corroborating evidence of the sexual assault allegation. On Nov. 27, 2018, Villamarin was arrested for sexual battery. Villamarin posted bond shortly after his arrest and was released with an arraignment date of Jan. 10, 2019.

July 2019. This month on the agenda is Lincoln Avenue and local residents at this last meet were prepared to voice their opinion, feedback and concerns about what will be considered to be updated in the city’s specific plan for this particular area.

Neshia Paton, a local resident who has lived on Alberta Street for 16 years, was an advocate for the children in her community.

She was an active participant throughout the virtual walking tour and voiced valuable feedback, specifically when the discussion of any

update in the city’s specific plan may impact the children in the community.

For example, one of the key plan areas is the intersection of Wyoming Street and Lincoln Avenue right at the edge of John Muir High School. When asked what type of uses they would like to see in these particular corners, Paton suggested something that would benefit the children like a skate-park or a recreational center. “This is a teenage zone; we need the kids to be in their own community.” Paton, a mother of four children who has lived in Pasadena for 40 years, feels it is important to build

a community where children can have access to recreational areas nearby. However, Paton’s main concern is that when the renovations and or upgrades are set and done on Lincoln Avenue it may miss to truly represent the culture of her community.

There are several more topics up for review for all of the eight areas getting updated in the city’s specific plan. Topics such as the design for buildings and structures, height and/or overall size of buildings and structures, the density and intensity of development and types of landscaping to name just a few.

efore you start: I know it’s a dumb pun. I am indeed aware, as I was the idiot who came up with it.

So...hi! I’m Brianna, an early twenty-something, recent university graduate who was born and raised in Pasadena. As you might have guessed, I love food! I’ve been lucky to grow up trying and eating pretty much everything, and food is one of the things my family doesn’t skimp on! Food and family are core aspects of both Chinese and Filipino culture - my parents’ backgrounds - and meals are an integral

communal activity. My mom affectionately but aggressively likes to feed anyone who comes into our house; and my fiancé has started to protest when she orders him to eat more. She’s always saying he’s skinny, but he just has a slim torso, okay? Jeez.

After growing up being able to access so many different cuisines, leaving the food haven of San Gabriel Valley was an eye-opener; I attended uni in St Andrews, Scotland, 5300 miles away from home.

St Andrews, beyond being known as the home of golf and where Wills met Kate, is also well-known for being a “bubble” fairly far from any major city. St Andrews is a bonnie wee toun, and I love her dearly, but culinary diver-

sity she has not. While my time in Britain has brought appreciation of a good fry-up (aka a “full English” - which can also be a full Scottish or a full Irish, etc....Google it! and you can thank me later for the great brunch ideas), the weirdly addictive Soreen, and the pseudo-sausage that is haggis, St Andrews in particular lacked variety of restaurants. Don’t get me started on their “Mexican food.” Britain?

I love you, but please stay in your lane - you do Indian food pretty well, but please don’t touch Mexican food; you’ll only hurt yourself. You have to buy Tesco “ripe and ready” avocados a week before you use them for them to qualify as either “ripe” or “ready”…

I didn’t realize how lucky

I was to be surrounded by almost every different culture of food constantly as a child; so, bereft of the food diversity I was so accustomed to, I had to learn how to make many of my favorites myself. I worked my way through some culinary staples and then eventually started moving to cooking all the foods I craved: I learned how to make congee, for instance, for when my fiancé or I was sick.

I learned how to make biko, a Filipino coconut rice dessert, because there was obviously no way to access Filipino food in Scotland. As the years went by, I attempted increasingly time-consuming and complicated recipes. I started making and saying “red wine reduction,” and was way too

proud of myself for that. Let’s be honest, I also got so much practice cooking because it was a great excuse to procrastinate writing my essays - a girl literally has to eat, right?

In my last semester of university, I procrastinated my dissertation by learning how to make homemade carnitas and setting up a burrito buffet line in my cozy flat’s kitchen. For just two people.

Don’t judge me.

I’m no professional - I’m not that technically skilled (I’m still afraid of hollandaise sauce, for instance, but I’m working up the courage to attempt it!), and while I recognize some ingredients, I don’t have a super-palate or anything like that. But that’s not what this column is for.

This column is an exploration and a celebration of the amazing variety of cuisines we enjoy here in our local community! I can’t think of anything that can bring people together like food. Food is a necessity, but in every culture, the kitchen is a hub of life, love, and laughter. The multitude of different cuisines and cultures at our fingertips reflects the diversity of our community and I want to share the joys of food, culture, and community with the local restaurants that pour their hearts and souls into their businesses, as well as with you!

retired from her previous career, she debated about what she should do next.

Since she had moved with her mom and brother to Pasadena, she decided to utilize the experience she had at hand: her family!

Her mother even used to work in the kitchen the first year Soh Grill was open, but due to health issues, is no longer able to; so her brother took over their mother’s spot and now works full-time in the kitchen.

The restaurant is modern, sleek, and slightly industrial in feel - the high, bare, concrete ceiling exposes its light fixtures and ventilation, but still feels wide-open

and airy. The warm wood paneling, stainless steel table dividers, and expansive white marble tabletops counter the industrial aesthetic up above with chic minimalism. Kim put a lot of thought, effort, and detail in the layout of her restaurant; and they work hard to upkeep the chic, clean, and minimalistic atmosphere of Soh Grill, meticulously changing out the air filters every month to ensure the air is consistently free of smoke and smells. These little details are easily overlooked by customers, yet they add to the experience by removing any factors that could distract from the delicious work of

the chefs.

Soh Grill is closed Mondays, but opens Tuesday to Sunday from 5-10 p.m. for dinner. You can only enjoy lunch there after noon on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, and they don’t currently take reservations for lunch, so plan accordingly!

Overall, Soh Grill’s menu has ample choices, but not so many as to be overwhelming. Kim wanted to put more focus on the meat itself than side dishes. Customers can expect a wide variety of high-quality cuts of meat available to mix and match to taste, or choose SEE SOH FRILL PAGE 15

“Soh” fittingly translates to “beef,” and their meat selection reflects an emphasis on fresh cuts of beef. We chose from one of their pre-arranged Butcher’s Choice sets for two people, and our particular set featured cuts of prime top blade, pork belly, pork jowl, and some classic bulgogi. We also asked to try their kalbi, or marinated beef short rib.

While bulgogi is a KBBQ classic, our waiter, Roland, explained to us that kalbi is the most traditional meat.

Seven different banchan accompany the meat: a salad dressed in a mouth-watering miso-sesame dressing, sautéed yuchoi greens, bean sprouts, homemade kimchi, pickled daikon radish, cucumber with onions (at dinner; at lunchtime, it’s potato salad), and a stack of rice paper with a spicy sauce.

These delectable sides are also all vegetarian and gluten-free.

Served on a beautiful wood cutting board, our meat was also accompanied by a slice of white onion and king oyster mushroom.

Great Views, Food and Thrills at Stratosphere Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas

he Stratosphere stands out among other hotel-casinos in Las Vegas. Not only is the 1,149-foot-tall tower the tallest resort on The Strip, but it also boasts some of the scariest rides I've ever seen up close - including one that I actually experienced.

My recent getaway to the Stratosphere began when a friend and I checked into an 18th-floor guestroom overlooking the glitzy city, sprawling mountains and desert beyond. One of 2,427 guest rooms and suites at the property, our room was spacious and comfortable. It came with two luxury queen beds, contemporary decor, a work area with desk and a big flat-screen TV. Once unpacked, I took the elevator down to the 80,000-square-foot casino for a little action. With more than 1,200 exciting slot and video poker games and 50 table games luring me in, I began at the quarter slots,

where I played long enough to drink a few beers and lose a mere $15, which wasn't bad for about an hour or so of gambling fun.

With the gambling fever out of my system, I met my friend for an elegant dinner at the Stratosphere's award winning Top of the World Restaurant, located more than 800 feet above Las Vegas. Here, in an elegant dining room that revolves 360 degrees every 80 minutes, we absorbed fabulous views, good wine and great food.

Our meal began with a delicious warm spinach salad, with shallots, apples, pecans, blue cheese and bacon vinaigrette. We followed this with a comforting bowl of lobster bisque, with brandy and lobster cream garnish. While enjoying the appetizers we sipped Robert Mondavi Merlot from Napa, California and watched the lights of the city slowly drift past as the floor of the restaurant slowly revolved.

For the main course I devoured fresh Alaskan cod, with soba noodles, bok choy, cashew raisin and soy butter.

My friend enjoyed the chef’s

special Rosen Farms Colorado lamb chop, with mint jelly, horseradish, and natural jus.

With these plates we split ample sides of lobster mac and cheese with mascarpone and béchamel sauce; and grilled asparagus.

After dinner we finished the night with a couple martinis at AirBar, located near the restaurant, on level 108 of the Stratosphere tower.

In the morning we were back atop the tower, which is said to be the tallest freestanding observation tower in the United States. But this time we weren't there to fill our stomachs, we were there to empty them. In other words, we were about to board X-Scream, the craziest amusement ride I've taken.

The adventure begins when passengers are strapped into an eight-seat rollercoaster sitting on one short track. The coaster is then fired up and the victims, I mean passengers, are propelled 27 feet out over the edge of the 866-foot high tower observation deck. After being shot over the edge, we dangled weightlessly above the Las Vegas Strip before being

pulled back and propelled over again for more. It all sounds pretty simple, but it is also the most thrilling thing I've done since skydiving.

But this isn't all. Besides X-Scream, the tower offers thrill seekers three other rides. These include Insanity, which employs a massive mechanical arm extending out 64 feet over the edge of the Stratosphere Tower and spins passengers in the open air at

is legacy was described as “his entire life having been given to the pleasure of others” by his loyal employees the year of his death in 1916. One hundred twenty-four years later, beloved photographer and bookstore owner Adam Clark Vroman’s legacy continues today as Vroman’s Bookstore in the heart of the Playhouse District.

Today, Barnes & Noble is considered the largest bookseller in the nation but it doesn’t have the same impact Vroman’s

Bookstore has had on the booklover community. Vroman’s is one of the oldest independent bookstores in southern California. On top of that, it is a store that supports local authors with book signing events, promotes local artists by putting their work on display, aids local community food and gift drives, hosts community events all year round, and gives back with a charity program that’s donated at least $655,998.52 to causes such as txhe recent fires.

Vroman’s was also a recipient of Publishers Weekly Bookseller of the Year Award in 2008.

the bookstore owned West Hollywood independent bookstore Book Soup, after the death of the owner. Currently, Vroman’s Bookstore owns the main bookstore and three businesses: Vroman’s Newsstand, Vroman’s Hastings Ranch and Book Soup. And, if a customer wants to grab something to eat or drink, there is a coffee shop called Jones Coffee Roasters inside the shop.

People who work in the store have described the store’s atmosphere as unique for its “historical affiliation” and as a place where there is “always a new discovery.” The store has left its mark in the community as many have come and come again.

“I’ve been coming here for a long time,” said Larry N. from Santa Clarita, Calif.

He described himself as a book lover and likes the store for its independent retailing and history.

Others return for the unplanned, non-cookiecutter book experience. “I come a lot, about two to three times a month, there are cards that tell you what’s new,” said Felicity F., frequent customer. She described with nostalgia the older bookstore experience.

o you remember how you learned to read? Perhaps a conscientious parent or teacher started a favorite story with you at a young age. Most of us consider it a rite of passage and a given skill for kids and adults alike—and yet many in San Gabriel Valley struggle with illiteracy.

Monrovia Reads was founded in 2002 to address both illiteracy and access to books in our community.

The data behind the impact of literacy plays a major role in how Monrovia Reads’ services have evolved.

“Research shows that one of the greatest indicators of a child’s future success is the literacy level of his or her parents,” said Monrovia Reads president Janet Wall, citing that literacy is tied to higher incomes, degrees and even healthier home environments.

“Our mission is to create and support an environment where reading is valued,” said Wall, “and resources are provided so all community members know how to (and actually do) read.”

The nonprofit offers multiple programs to equip children and adults as readers and expand access to books. Monrovia Reads Literacy Van partners with the local library for weekly visits at all of Monrovia’s

elementary schools and other locations throughout the city, reaching thousands of kids with story time, homework help and a chance to check out a new book.

In addition, tutoring at Monrovia Library is open for K-12 students, and the nonprofit has made scholarships, book distributions, and even teachers’ book grants available so students can begin their own librar-

“Illiteracy limits a child’s future,” said Wall. “They need exposure to at least 20,000 hours of spoken language in order to get ready to read. When they’re exposed to reading from an early age, it lays the foundation for a love of books and reading—and are more likely to carry that tradition on with their own children.”

With a service area including thousands of children, the nonprofit relies on the support of a devoted board, the city, volunteers and donors to keep literacy thriving in Monrovia.

Sheriffs Looking for Additional Victims of Sexual Assault Suspect Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Special Victims Bureau investigators believe there may be additional victims in a sexual assault case. Suspect Deanthony Govan was arrested on January 24, 2019 in Lakewood and is still in-custody. Anyone who was victimized by the suspect is urged to come forward.

Investigators learned that on January 24, 2019, a deputy from Lakewood Sheriff’s Station was on patrol when he recognized suspect Govan, who was wanted for numerous crimes. He was walking in the apartment complex located near the 4900 block of Castana Avenue, Lakewood.

The deputy detained and arrested Deanthony Govan, who was then booked at Lakewood Sheriff’s Station for a series of sexual assaults and additional other charges.

Detectives from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Special Victims Bureau are handling the investigation. Suspect Govan committed a series of sexual assaults in the Lakewood area from September 3, 2017 to December 30, 2018. The five female victims range from 19 to 39 years-old.

Deanthony Govan is a male Black 25 years-old and resident of Lakewood.

Imprisonment 236 P.C., (4) Oral Copulation, 288a(C)(2) (A) P.C., (4) Rape 261(A)(2)P.C., (2) Robbery, 211 P.C., Assault with a Deadly Weapon, 245(A) (4) P.C. He is currently being held on $7,000,000 bail, with a next court date of February 6, 2019, at Norwalk Court.

The Special Victims Bureau believes there may be additional victims in this case.

I

t was the worst of times: the 53rd Super Bowl or shall we say, Brady Brunch on Sunday.

If the hype and the preview ads didn’t get you sucked in, private parties, bars and restaurants around the nation hosted the whole shebang that even remotely smelled like the Gridiron. You really can’t avoid the Super Bowl, can you?

It was a lamentably awful; historically and pathetically slow-moving and low-scoring game which, I also learned, was apparently the lowest viewed in the history of the televised game.

Oh, and don’t get me started on the half-time debacle. What a load of unpleasant noise by overpaid

“musicians” getting the audience ready to see even more overpaid football players do very little for their fans.

Some of us in the newspaper business were flummoxed by the cost of the ad taken out

by The Washington Post - $10 million ad narrated by Tom Hanks to tout the importance of reporting while ironically cutting newsroom staff at the revered Washington newspaper.

“Local newspapers have already been gutted. There’s nothing left to cut,” one Washington Post headline reads.

Life indeed is “like a box of chocolates” Mr. Gump, and we who try to thrive in this crazy world of newsgathering got a lot less that we bargained for in the past few years, thanks, in most part to the advent of social media, and corporate hedge funds which seem to

scarf down the newspaper business like prey.

Therefore, when a behemoth publisher of a multiple Pulitzer prizewinning fish-wrapper does this crazy stunt, it’s no wonder the rank and file got a little ticked off. At least three of the Post’s own reporters say the spot’s cost of up to $10 million was exorbitant and could have been better spent improving the newsroom.

In commenting on the Post’s final quote in the 60 second spot “Democracy dies in darkness” Rick Brown tweeted: “Oh brother, ‘democracy dies in darkness.’ Tell them credibility dies in bias.”

The Washington Post’s decision to pay that kind of coin for a commercial when newsrooms are being cut down to the bare bone seems apocalyptic. The newspaper,

as we knew it, died - along with common sense - and it is indeed a sad day when Amazon (CEO Bezos owns The Post) delivers such a blow to journalists.

Those reporters who lost careers either at The Post or elsewhere on the verge of the brave new world they call social media are trembling in this deeply disturbing darkness, Mr. Bezos.

Columbia Journalism Review draws an intriguing parallel between food consumption and news consumption. There's too much to eat so we get overweight; there's too much information out there so we get overwhelmed and fail to show discrimination. But what is a “healthy” news item?

I wonder what that wonderful and brutally honest New York wordsmith, Jimmy Breslin, would have scribed for the NY Post.

By the way, the average NFL salary is $2.1 million. The mind boggles.

As a typical old timer, I must confess that I often yearn for “the good old days” (less traffic, for example, and less gun

violence).

Yet, who ever dreamed 50 years ago that someday a young woman who describes herself as both Jewish and gay [sic], would become the Rose Parade’s queen followed by being selected by a State Senate District as its Woman of the Year?

here’s this thing that happens when you see something unexpected. You just can’t unsee it. Once you know, there’s no turning back. That happened for me one year ago. I’ve tried to push it out of my mind, but I just can’t any longer.

Professionals on LinkedIn are posting some very unprofessional things. It’s happening all the time, and frankly, it’s shocking.

There’s been an influx of cartoon profile photos. There are also overly casual profile photos taken with baseball caps on. There are profile photos with children and pets.

The professional is posing along with their two babies, two cats, or two dogs.

There are job titles like, “Not Channing Tatum’s dad” and “Defender of the Universe.” In fact, if you look, there are 64 professionals on LinkedIn who are apparently defending our universe.

There are even posts featuring ultrasound photos, announcing the births of new

At first glance, these things all seem fun. These people seem so relatable. This personal information allows connections on LinkedIn to learn more about the person quickly.

But, this is the problem.

Not everybody can post photos with their babies and cats on LinkedIn and be taken seriously in the professional world. Not everyone can post a cartoon profile photo and expect to ever get a new job.

I’ll be honest. The people primarily posting these things are young male executives in their thirties and forties. I’m 100 percent certain they have

the very best of intentions.

They want to be relatable.

They want to show they put their family first. They want to be funny.

Arcadia Puts on Clinic Against Mayfair to Open Postseason Action If one were to review Arcadia girls’ water polo’s season performance without including the last week and a half, it’d be safe to assume the team wouldn’t make too much noise in league finals and beyond.

Pasadena Squanders Lead & Season in Playoff Loss to Cathedral City

t was just one of those games for Pasadena boys’ soccer as the Bulldogs let their season slip away with a 2-1 overtime loss to Cathedral City in a CIF-SS Division 4 wildcard match-up on Tuesday.

Pasadena High School’s soccer don Cherif Zein, who coaches both varsity boys and girls, definitely had a rough start to his week. After watching his girls’ team lose 3-2 to Santa Paula in an overtime thriller on Monday, Zein had to experience it all over again as the boys were ousted in similar fashion the following day.

Despite riding a ninegame undefeated streak that earned them a thirdplace finish in the Pacific League, the Bulldogs came out a little flat against

“I didn’t think that (Cathedral City) was that good to begin with,” Zein said.

“They surprised me, they had good speed overall and they wanted it a little bit more by hustling a lot more and winning every head ball … they played really well so you got to give credit.”

While Zein is disappointed with his team’s early playoff exit, he said the Bulldogs are still very young as this year’s starting lineup was mostly made up of sophomores and juniors.

With the grueling regular season out of the way, the Monrovia wrestling team has proved its worth as the team shifts its focus to CIF action in the coming weeks.

The Wildcats are coming off an impressive showing at the Rio Hondo League finals on Jan. 30. On the boys’ side, every wrestler placed at least third or higher with seniors Maury Rams and Rashad Flood each taking first place in the 195-pound division and heavyweight

Cathedral City. Both sides struggled to connect passes and maintain a steady rhythm, which could obviously be the result of some big-game jitters.

However, an early goal from Andres Cervantes had Pasadena for most of the first half. It wasn’t until a few minutes before the break where Cathedral was able to put one away off a set piece to level the score 1-1.

Second half saw more of the same with neither side finding the edge to score the go-ahead goal. There were some close calls on both ends as Cathedral City’s speed up top pressured Pasadena to commit a myriad of errors.
