he Pasadena City Council meeting focused on implementation Monday, creating an ad hoc committee to develop the parameters of Measure J and conducting a first reading of an ordinance regulating sidewalk vendors in Pasadena.

Measure J is an advisory measure approved by 72 percent of Pasadena voters that recommends that one-third of funds created by Measure I’s ¾ percent sales tax increase go towards public schools.

Measure I was passed this November to generate revenue to reinvest in critical infrastructure and maintain essential services and is expected to bring in around $21 million annually, per city estimates.

Active shooter situations have become far too common in today’s American experience and thus we have all been forced to learn the bare minimum of what to do in such an emergency. According to the Gun Violence Archive, there have been 329 mass shootings as of Dec. 11.

They define mass shootings as four or more individuals being shot or killed in the same general time and location.

On Dec. 7 the Arcadia Chamber of Commerce was given insight into active shooter situations during a presentation courtesy of Mike Vercillo, community services officer for the

Arcadia Police Department (APD) and Steve Delgadillo, community affairs liaison for the APD. In a blog post for the Chamber, Matt Miyasaki shared guidelines on what

to do in the case of an active shooter as presented to the Chamber. If you can’t remember the details, simply remember to run, hide, and fight.

Miyasaki broke down the instructions as follows: Run - Have an escape route and plan in mind.

- Leave your belongings

behind.

- Keep your hands visible.

Hide - Hide in an area out of the shooter’s view.

- Block entry to your hiding place and lock the doors.

- Silence your cell phone, pager and electronic devices.

Fight - Only when your life is in imminent danger.

- Attempt to incapacitate the shooter.

- Act with physical aggression, throw things at the shooter. Put him on the defensive.

Pasadena Police Helping Keep Roadways Safe During Holidays The Christmas and New Year's holidays are great ways to spend time with family and friends ringing in another year, but also a time when people can make poor choices that put themselves and others at risk on the road.

To help spread the message about the dangers of drunk and drugged driving, the Pasadena Police Department is partnering with the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to get impaired drivers off roads.

During the high-visibility enforcement campaign Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over, which runs from Dec. 14-Jan. 1, the Pasadena Police Department will have more

officers on the road conducting saturation patrols looking for drivers suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.

"Whether you are home with family or out celebrating, it is important that you find a sober ride home after drinking," said Mark Goodman, Lieutenant of the Police Department's Traffic Section. "It is up to you to make safe decisions and drive sober or use a ride share service. There are no excuses for driving impaired."

The Pasadena Police Department also reminds drivers that "DUI Doesn't Just Mean Booze."

"Drunk driving continues to be a huge problem in this country, and more recently, marijuana and drug-impaired

driving," said Lieutenant Goodman. "People are out and about shopping for the holidays and going to or hosting parties, so it is important that everyone acts responsibly behind the wheel."

twentieth century, the satire on war and bureaucracy is set during World War II and follows a U.S. Army Air Force B-25 bombardier as he tries to maintain his sanity while fulfilling his service requirements so he can go home.

One Book, One City is a nation-wide community reading program that invites everyone in a city to read and discuss the same book, expanding the idea of a localized book discussion club to cover a whole

community. The upcoming year will feature discussions about author Joseph Heller, readings of the stage play, and even a world premiere of an HBO documentary.

Now Is the Time to Plan Your New Year’s Eve The City of Monrovia in collaboration with the Monrovia Old Town Advisory Board (MOTAB) will once again hold New Year’s Eve on Myrtle Avenue starting at 7 p.m. on Monday Dec. 31. For the last several years the merchants of old town and the city have worked together to provide the community with a safe place to ring in the New Year.

There will be child care available at the Monrovia Community Center for just $20 for the evening.

The city has recommended that because parking in the downtown area is limited, the New Year’s celebration will be a good time to carpool or use GoMonrovia via a LimeBike or Lyft. Lyft is only 50 cents if the user opts for a shared ride.

City Manager Oliver Chi recommends that if you have any questions about the New Year’s Eve celebration, that you contact the Community Center at (626) 256-8225.

ARCADIA Dec. 2 At approximately 7:36 p.m., an officer responded to the Arcadia Police Department front counter regarding a fraud report. The victim stated an unknown suspect made fraudulent purchases on his credit card totaling $2,000. The victim doesn’t know the identity of the suspect or how the suspect obtained his personal information.

Dec. 3 Just after 12:41 a.m., officers conducted an enforcement stop on a vehicle in the area of Huntington Drive and Baldwin Avenue for driving without headlights. Upon contacting the driver, the officer noticed signs consistent with alcohol consumption. During a series of tests, the officers concluded the 28-year-old male from Monrovia was driving with a blood alcohol content of .214 percent. He was arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking.

At approximately 8:23 a.m., an officer responded to the 400 block of West Le Roy Avenue regarding a vehicle burglary report. The officer discovered an unknown suspect smashed the front passenger window and stole the victim’s purse between 8:10 a.m. and 8:18 a.m. on Dec. 3 while the victim dropped her kids off at school. No suspects were seen and no witnesses were located.

Dec. 4 Around 2:57 a.m., officers responded to Envision Optometric Eyecare, 655 W. Duarte Road, regarding an audible alarm activation. Surveillance footage revealed an unknown suspect smashed the front glass door with a sledge hammer and stole numerous pairs of glasses. The investigation is ongoing.

regarding a stolen vehicle report. The victim discovered her 1999 Honda Civic had been stolen sometime during the previous evening. No suspects were seen and no witnesses were located.

Dec. 5 At about 1:02 p.m., an officer responded to a residence in the 1600 block of Alta Oaks Drive regarding a fraud report. The victim determined an unknown suspect attempted to open a Target credit card in their name without their permission. The victim does not know how the suspect obtained their personal information or the identity of the suspect.

Shortly after 3:39 p.m., an officer responded to Fairview Park, 542 Fairview Ave., regarding a grand theft report. The victim was approached by three female suspects who told her a family member was in danger and to save them, she should participate in a “spiritual ceremony.” They instructed her to go home, find all of the money and jewelry she could find, and then return to the park and give them the items. The victim complied and gave the suspects more than $15,000 worth of property and money. The suspects fled on foot. The suspects are described as three Asian females, 5-feet-1 to 5-feet-4, 100 to 150 pounds.

The investigation is ongoing.

Dec. 6 Before 4:04 p.m., an officer responded to Arcadia Medical & Cosmetic Center, 1317 S. Baldwin Ave., regarding a forgery report. Staff members located a counterfeit $100 bill in the register.

It is unknown who passed the fraudulent currency.

Around 5:44 p.m., an officer responded to a residence in the 1400 block of Melanie Way regarding a residential burglary report. The officer determined unknown suspect(s) pried open the pet door screen, ransacked the home, and fled with an un-

known amount of property.

The investigation is ongoing.

Dec. 7

MONROVIA Nov. 29

At about 8:54 a.m., an officer responded to a residence in the 100 block of Genoa Street regarding a battery report. An investigation revealed an altercation occurred between a husband and a wife resulting in the husband choking the wife until she lost unconsciousness. The 32-year-old male from Arcadia is outstanding at the time of this report.

At 7:16 a.m., a caller reported a family disturbance at a residence in the 600 block of East Colorado.

Officers arrived and located the involved parties. An investigation revealed a mutual combat between family members. One half desired prosecution and the other half refused prosecution.

Just before 5:43 p.m., officers responded to Nordstrom, 400 S. Baldwin Ave., regarding a burglary report.

An investigation revealed six juvenile suspects stole six backpacks valued at $1,800 before exiting and fleeing in a red Ford Econoline van.

The investigation is ongoing.

At 3:24 a.m., a resident in the in the 100 block of Hidden Valley reported a suspicious vehicle in the area, occupied by three subjects. The resident asked the subjects what they were doing. They stated they were looking for recyclables and then sped off in the vehicle. Officers located the vehicle in the area and stopped it. Two of the occupants had outstanding warrants for their arrest. The two subjects were arrested.

Dec. 8 Shortly after 1:24 a.m., an officer conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle in the area of Sixth and Live Oak avenues for driving without headlights. A records check revealed the vehicle’s registration was suspended.

During a consensual search of the driver, the officers located drug paraphernalia, a controlled substance, false identification cards, and discovered the 33-year-old female from Temple City was driving without a license. A records check of the 18-yearold male passenger from Temple City revealed he had an outstanding felony warrant. Both were arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking.

At approximately 7:11 p.m., officers responded to a residence in the 1100 block of Fallen Leaf Road regarding a residential burglary report. An investigation revealed unknown suspect(s) smashed a second story window, entered the home, and fled through the front door.

The loss is unknown at this time. No suspects were seen and no witnesses were located.

At 7:57 p.m., a resident in the 200 block of West Cherry had a knock at his front door. He opened the front door and a person he knew struck him in the head with an unknown object.

Monrovia paramedics arrived and transported the victim to a local hospital. The suspect fled the scene prior to officers arriving. An officer responded to the hospital and spoke with the victim.

At 9:11 p.m., an officer was providing extra patrol in the 2500 block of South Myrtle when he ran a license plate to an occupied vehicle. The vehicle was reported as stolen. Officers detained the two subjects inside the vehicle. A female adult was arrested for grand theft auto and a male adult was arrested for resisting and delaying an investigation. The stolen vehicle was recovered.

Mountain. The employee told the officer he witnessed a male Hispanic adult steal a chainsaw from the business. The suspect fled the scene prior to the employee flagging down the officer.

Dec. 5 At 10:27 a.m., a resident in the 800 block of West Foothill reported and hit and run traffic collision. An unknown motorist had sideswiped her parked vehicle. She had parked her car the day before and it did not have any damage.

At 12:52 p.m., officers responded to a residence in the 800 block of West Colorado regarding a welfare check on a female adult and female juvenile. Officers went to the location and discovered the two females were deceased. LASD Homicide Bureau is handling the investigation with the assistance of the Monrovia Police Department Detective Bureau.

SIERRA MADRE Dec. 3

At 9:50 a.m., a heavily intoxicated male subject was causing a disturbance in front of a business in the 100 block of West Foothill. Officers arrived and contacted the subject. After field tests were conducted, it was determined he was too intoxicated to care for himself. He was arrested.

At 12:29 p.m., a motorist reported that he just collided with a parked vehicle in the 100 block of West Foothill. He advised he hit the door of the parked car when the occupant opened his door into oncoming traf-

Dec. 3 At 3:55 p.m., a victim called to report that his vehicle, which was parked in the 200 block of West Lime, was tampered with. The victim left the vehicle parked in the street for approximately three weeks. When he returned to the vehicle, he noticed a door handle was damaged. Investigation is continuing.

The two most common styles of dining, at least in the U.S., are the American Style and the Continental Style. American Style requires diners to cut one bite of food at a time.

According to Forbes, first you must hold your utensils correctly; fork in the left hand and knife in the right, vice versa for left-handers, resting on your index fingers. After cutting one bite of food you then place your knife to the top right of your plate, blade facing in.

The fork is then switched to the right hand and used to pick up the morsel of food, tines up. Continental Style requires less switching of utensils and thought to be more “graceful.” In this style you take a bite of your food, fork tines facing down, while keeping both of your utensils in your hand.

t’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play,’ will be part of the largest holiday celebration in the history of the Pasadena Playhouse. On stage from December 12 through December 23, it was adapted

by Joe Landry from the 1946 Frank Capra film.

Simon Helberg, best known for portraying Howard Wolowitz in the CBS awardwinning smash hit ‘Big Bang Theory,’ stars as the despondent George Bailey contemplating suicide. His guardian angel intervenes and shows him what his town would have

been like had he never been born.

Actor, director, and producer Cameron Watson, who directed last year’s Pasadena Playhouse radio play ‘Miracle on 34th Street’ will once again be at the helm.

He says, “Joe Landry took all the materials from the script and put them into this radio play format,” Watson explains.

“It’s faithful to the movie in a very clever way. One really fun thing about doing a radio play is seeing actors’ versatility.

There are only five performers in this play that has about 45 parts. Two actors will be playing the roles of George Bailey and Mary, George’s wife. The three others perform close to 20 characters each,

from the cab driver to the various children. And they’re going to do that with merely their voice, there’s no costume change.

“It’s such a treat for audiences to see what went on behind the scenes of a radio

play in the old days. They can visually paint the story for themselves; they get to imagine what this cab, for instance, looks like; they can envision the bridge that George Bailey is standing on.

I love that it makes for a very

open canvas.”

Watson adds, “At first glance, ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ might not seem kid-friendly but when we get to the part of the story that’s somber, there will be a surprise that I think children will be enchanted by. I was reading it again last night as I prepared for rehearsals and it’s all about believing in Santa, or in hope, or in whatever you hang your beliefs on. Because it’s a radio play, there’s a tendency for it to be taken lightly, and actors have to really work hard to impart the message at its core .”

“Oftentimes, we go through life without being aware that a small kind gesture – a warm hug, a friendly touch,

a ‘hello’ to someone we see on the street – is important. ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ is a story that reminds us that all of us, not matter how insignificant we think we are, have a contribution to make to society,” Watson wisely pronounces.

In our increasingly rancorous and deeply divided society, the lesson of George Bailey’s life takes on a greater significance. It makes us recognize that while, individually, our existence might not seem important enough to make a difference in the world, just as it takes millions of stars to light a dark sky, the good things we do in our little sphere of influence could very well make a world of difference.

Arcadia Stage’s Unforgettable Production of ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ Sarah WANG AUSD Digital Communications Intern All 1,163 seats in the Arcadia Performing Arts Center (PAC) were completely filled for the second performance of Arcadia High School’s fall production of “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.”

Surrounded by a sea of theater-goers, children, parents, students, and faculty were spotted with tickets in hand, eagerly waiting in line to see the much-anticipated show.

As the doors of the PAC opened, theater seats were filled and nostalgia permeated the air for many.

“Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” marks the first play of the year for Arcadia Stage, Arcadia High School’s theater program. It follows the story of a young boy growing up in poverty who is given the opportunity of a lifetime.

Alison Wright, a junior at Arcadia High School and member of the Advanced

Theater program, said, “This play was chosen mainly because it explores the themes of family and positivity. Especially since it is almost the holiday season, we thought it would be a great transition before Thanksgiving and Christmas.”

During the moments leading to showtime, performers prepare both physically and mentally.

They dedicate a large amount of time to thoroughly stretching—sometimes incorporating yoga in this routine. In addition, they exercise their voices by practicing different vocal activities. “Right before the show starts, many actors can be spotted wearing headphones to clear distractions and push themselves mentally to step in the shoes of their characters,” Wright said.

Although not all students in Advanced Drama had a lead role, it does not mean they do not gain valuable experience.

“Since I am in Ensemble, I am given the opportunity

to see the process from a different perspective,” Wright said. “Now, I have a better understanding and idea of how to get a more prominent role for the upcoming shows.”

Out of the three shows, the Friday show completely sold out. With a body in each of the 1,163 seats in the PAC, it made for a packed house. For many audience members, seeing the show transported them back to their childhood. Arcadia High School junior, Mina Choi, said, “It has been quite some time since I have actually seen ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ on television. Now that I have had the opportunity to watch it live, I was able to remember the core values of family, love, and humbleness that was [sic] instilled within me many years ago by the movie. It was refreshing.”

During the last meeting on Measure J implementation, there was discussion of using the funds as a guarantee that PUSD will have the 3 percent reserve requirement needed to keep the district from falling into the hands of the Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE).

However, with PUSD officials now confident they can

meet LACOE requirements through additional staff reductions, the city now has “time to consider best [the] approach to a unique opportunity,” according to tis presentation.

“As we finalize the First Interim Report, we have been in contact with LACOE to ensure that we meet their requirements for fiscal stability so that we will no longer require a County fiscal expert,” PUSD governing board president Lawrence Torres wrote in an email to the city. “I would like to thank

you for your partnership and support of Pasadena Unified students, and schools, and for placing Measure J on the ballot,” Torres wrote.

A staff report written by city manager Steve Mermell recommended the council consider the Measure I a “general revenue” and Measure J an extension of that.

Pasadena PD Conducts Operation Polar Wind

The Pasadena Police Air Operations Section and the Foothill Air Support Team (FAST) conducted their 13th annual Christmas Toy Drive on Dec. 12 at the Pediatrics Ward of Huntington Memorial Hospital.

Interim Pasadena Police Chief John Perez escorted Santa Clause and his flight suit clad “elves” as they arrived bearing gifts and holiday cheer in their own special rotorequipped sleigh.

The “sleigh” helicopter landed with Santa and his crew on the roof of the hospital.

After visiting the children at the hospital, the flight crews conducted a ground based mission where children impacted by domestic violence visited the North Pole (police heliport in Altadena). The event was held in conjunction with Peace Over Violence. Peace Over Violence is committed to serving domestic violence and sexual assault survivors in our community.

The event was funded through the generous contributions of the Pasadena Police Department employees and Officer Associations participating in the FAST program throughout the San Gabriel Valley.

“The ongoing efforts of the men and women in law enforcement organizations throughout the San Gabriel Valley are second to none,” said interim Police Chief John Perez. “I am inspired by their dedication, selflessness, and willingness to assist those in need. I am also grateful to be part of an organization that can experience the spirit of giving during the holiday season and wish many blessings on our community”.

ll throughout Arcadia High School (AHS), students are immersed in a variety of opportunities for community service. One event that was especially unique was AHS’s Students Promoting Literacy club’s book drive, held from Dec. 3 to Dec. 7. Led by officer team members President Natalie Samadi, Vice President Rachel Lee, Secretary Kenna Gao, Treasurer Matthew Lu, Historian Christie Wang, and Interclub Council Representative Ethan Nguyen, Students Promoting Literacy is a club that focuses on English literacy for Arcadia students and the surrounding community.

In accordance with their mission and in honor of the giving holiday spirit, Students Promoting Literacy held a book drive in early December to expand club outreach and to help the community.

The officer team chose to do a book drive in particular because they “wanted to

Furthermore, reading books not only inspires readers but also encourages and builds a strong foundation for literacy.

The organization that Students Promoting Literacy chose for its book drive was The Women’s Room at Friends In Deed. This local Pasadena organization provides services for women who are at risk of homelessness or are homeless. Because The Women’s Room’s mission

is in compliance with that of Students Promoting Literacy, Samadi said they selected the program as it “is an impactful program that not only provides basic necessities for those in need but also hosts activities such as weekly writing classes for its women.”

High school seniors invited to write about how Alzheimer’s has impacted their lives Fuschillo, Jr., AFA’s president and CEO. “Every teen who openly shares their experiences with Alzheimer’s helps to educate others and inspire them to make a difference. We invite high school seniors to enter the contest and tell their stories.”

To participate in the competition, applicants must submit an essay (1,500 words maximum) that describes how Alzheimer’s disease has impacted their lives and what they have learned about themselves, their family and/or their community in the face of coping with the illness. High school seniors who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents and entering a fouryear accredited college or university within 12 months of the application deadline are welcome to enter the contest. Students already attending college are not eligible to participate.

The grand prize winner will receive a $5,000 college scholarship. Prizes

While giving high-fives and monitoring entrances, fathers, grandfathers, stepfathers, uncles, and other father-figures wished students a good day at school during the launch of Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students) at Mayflower Elementary on Nov. 28.

The program encourages members to spend at least one day at the school and take part in school activities throughout the year.

Watch D.O.G.S., which began in 1998, helps students gain positive male role models

while schools gain extra security. Volunteers who participate get a glimpse of the school climate, which helps them better relate to their children.

Responsibilities for Watch D.O.G.S. include working with students on assignments, participating in recess or lunch activities, watching school entrances and hallways, assisting with traffic before and after school, and other assigned activities that allow them to engage with students.

The program is recog-

nized by the United States Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and ensures every child has a father or father-figure to connect with in a positive way while at school.

“Thank you to those who have already volunteered in the program,” Superintendent Katherine Thorossian said.

The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) is inviting college-bound high school seniors across the country to enter its 2019 Teens for Alzheimer’s Awareness Scholarship Essay Contest for the chance to earn money for college.

The annual program has awarded more than $250,000 in college scholarships since its inception.

La Salle Academic Decathlon Team Wins Big at International Tournament Six students from La Salle College Preparatory Academic Decathlon team garnered 39 medals in the World Scholars Cup (WSC) Tournament of Champions at Yale University. Two Lancer trios competed against over 400 other teams from 58 other countries. The WSC competition is comprised of four separate events: a Scholars Challenge which is an arduous 120-question multiple choice test on six different subjects, a collaborative essay involving all members of the team, three team debates, and a Scholars Bowl which is a combination of game show and audio-visual madness. New Cannabis Testing Lab Opens in Monrovia Monrovia City Manager Oliver Chi announced in Tuesdays’ City Manager’s Update that a company called LB PharmLabs received the final State regulatory approvals needed to open a new cannabis testing laboratory in Monrovia at 1000 S. Magnolia Ave. According to the firm, they provide the “cannabis industry with laboratory testing and analytic

services to ensure consumers have access to safe medicine. Through laboratory testing, [the company] ensure[s] safe medicine for the cannabis community by testing for contaminants that may result from the growth, extraction and packaging processes.”

Reader Responds to Reader Who Expressed Opposition to Arcadia’s Historic Preservation Ordinance Dear Editor, It’s too late, in my opinion, for Arcadia to pass a Historic Preservation Ordinance (HPO).

Even if that decree rescues a few charming dwellings from being replaced by ostentatious mansions, the harm has already been done.

To see all those gargantuan mansions situated next to simple yet tastefully designed family homes is like viewing a gathering of people; some dressed in modest elegance and others flaunting garish outfits.

Sadly, since Arcadia’s once enchanting neighborhoods are already disfigured from the plague of overindulgence, that city’s attempt to pass a Historic Preservation Ordinance is like trying to stop a bleeding artery with a Band-Aid. The Japanese have a proverb that might well have been written about Arcadia: “He o hitte shiri tsubome.” (It’s too late to squeeze your cheeks after you pass gas.)

A meeting on Dec. 10 kicked-off the environmental review process for the proposed phasing of construction for the Glendora to Montclair project. The Construction Authority is preparing a Supplemental Environmental Impact Report (SEIR) to analyze the impacts of all possible phasing options, allowing the agency flexibility to build as far east as possible depending on the amount of funding that can be secured. The SEIR will also review the possible relocation of the Pomona station parking facility from the north side of the station to the south side.

Father Charged With 4-Year-Old Daughter’s Death The father of a 4-yearold girl was charged with her death over the weekend in South Los Angeles, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

Charles Richard Lee (dob 4/15/95) was charged in case BA473340 with one

count of assault on a child causing death. He is scheduled to be arraigned today in Department 30 of the Foltz Criminal Justice Center.

Deputy District Attorney Colby Cano of the Complex Child Abuse Section, Family Violence Division, is prosecuting the case.

Prosecutors said the victim was dropped off at her father’s home in the 1500 block of East 42nd Street several weeks ago.

Over the course of that time, Lee allegedly physically abused her.

On Dec. 2, paramedics responded to the home

where they found the girl unresponsive and took her to a nearby hospital.

If convicted as charged, Lee faces a possible maximum sentence of 25 years to life in state prison.

The case remains under investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department.

Chiropractor Pleads in $150 Million Insurance Fraud Scheme A 56-year-old chiropractor has pleaded guilty for his role in a massive workers’ compensation insurance fraud and conspiracy scheme, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announce.

Paul Turley (dob 11/12/62) of Granada Hills made a factual basis plea to one count each of conspiracy to commit insurance fraud, mayhem, insurance fraud and unlawful patient referral.

As part of the written plea agreement filed with the court, Turley detailed his involvement in the scheme.

He faces up to eight years in state prison. Sentencing is set for June 14.

Deputy District Attorneys Dayan Mathai, Catherine Chon, Karen Nishita and

Kennes Ma are prosecuting the case.

Turley is among a dozen defendants who were indicted by a grand jury in 2015 for fraudulently billing tens of millions of dollars to insurance companies for fraudulent surgeries, prescription medications, fake MRIs, falsifying medical reports and office visits.

Prosecutors later divided the larger case into three smaller ones in an effort to streamline the complex litigation and refile several counts that previously had been dismissed. However, indictments remain against orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Munir Uwaydah, and his office manager, Wendee Luke, both of whom are fugitives.

The conspiracy allegedly included paying lawyers and marketers as much as $10,000 a month for illegal patient referrals, known as “capping.”

Nearly two dozen patients allegedly were deceived into having surgeries they thought would be performed by Uwaydah.

Instead, a physician’s assistant who never attended medical school, carried out invasive and sometimes unnecessary surgeries.

Uwaydah was not present in the operating room for all surgeries, prosecutors said.

In addition, nearly two dozen patients have lasting physical scars and many needed additional surgeries to repair the original injury.

Last year, co-defen-

dant Marissa Nelson (dob 11/29/76) pleaded guilty to one felony count of conspiracy to commit insurance fraud and admitted a special allegation of taking property of a value exceeding $3.2 million. She faces up to nine years in state prison when she is scheduled to be sentenced on Jan. 25.

The other 10 defendants are awaiting trial. Among the charges they each face are conspiracy, money laundering and unlawful patient referral. Some of the defendants also face aggravated mayhem charges.

The cases were investigated by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Bureau of Investigation and the Organized Crime Division.

Sue Drops 29 as Arcadia Molly Wops Muir for Third League Win

ight before the season hits its one-month mark, Arcadia girls’ basketball continues to steamroll the competition as Ashley Sue and the rest of the team outclassed Muir 84-39 in the third game of Pacific League action on Tuesday.

It has been a remarkable year for Arcadia sports as the football and girls’ tennis teams managed to deliver historic seasons. Now it seems the girls’ basketball team is following suit as the Apaches have won 12 out of its first 13 games.

Barring a 56-44 loss to powerhouse Orange Lutheran at the La Habra Tournament, Arcadia has beaten its oppo-

nents by an average margin of 28.25 points. The Apaches’ widest margin of victory came at the expense of Hoover, who lost 82-12 on Friday.

Arcadia’s staggering play has firmly placed them atop the Pacific League standings at 3-0, albeit still early in the season. However, its latest win against the Mustangs showed that the Apaches aren’t prone to slowing down any time soon.

From the beginning, Muir stood no chance, falling behind 25-14 in the first quarter of Tuesday’s matchup. Arcadia then went on to have its highest-scoring quarter of the evening, tallying 25 to Muir’s 11 while ballooning the lead to 48-25

at the half.

The second half was no different as the Apaches eventually cruised to the win while also extending their win streak to three games.

Senior guard Ashley Sue was lights out, leading all scorers with 29 points, including four three-pointers. Sahana Saikumar and Mychayl Phillips also made solid contributions, recording 20 and 13 points, respectively.

With Pasadena still nipping at Arcadia’s heels in the Pacific League title race, the Apaches will seek to gain some elbowroom as they take on the Bulldogs (4-2 Overall, 2-0 Pacific) Friday at Arcadia High School at 5:30 p.m.

bounce back quickly in order to avoid finishing in last place for the second year in a row. In what could be a beneficial turn of events, the Mustangs will take a break from Pacific League play as they host Oxnard on Wednesday.

Muir will then play their final league game of the 2018 calendar year against Crescenta Valley before taking a two-break. League action is scheduled to start back up again on Jan. 4 as the Mustangs look to catch their bearings for a serious chance at the title.

The Mustangs of Muir boys’ soccer have stumbled out of the gate in their 2018-19 season as their latest 2-2 tie with Arcadia on Tuesday has them sitting even with the Apaches at the bottom of the league table.

Despite a respectable 5-2 routing over Blair on Nov. 29, the Mustangs have put up a less-than-impressive start to their season. Muir is 1-3-2 so far, including losses to Marshall, Burroughs, and Burbank while tying South El Monte 3-3 and now Arcadia 2-2.

The future is looking very bright for Monrovia wrestling as both the boys’ and girls’ sides put up notable efforts in the West Covina and Edison High Beach Bash Tournaments over the weekend.

Continuing to build off last season’s success, the Wildcats have already turned some heads shortly after embarking on their 2018-19 campaign a couple weeks ago. As the program continues to grow, so do the expectations and standards.

Last season, Monrovia broke a team record by having 11 total wrestlers qualify for CIF playoffs.

This year, the Wildcats appear to be well on their way to surpassing that as the girls’ team had two wrestlers place within the top 10 at the West Covina Tournament while the boys’ had three wrestlers finish within in the top 10 at the Edison High Tournament.

Mary Tuite stole the spotlight at West Covina, taking first place while Jasmine Zamora placed seventh for Monrovia.
