asadena Independent has confirmed that Interim Chief John Perez is on the final-four short-list of candidates for the permanent position of Pasadena Police Chief.

In addition, this newspaper has

learned that Commander Moody of Pasadena PD is also on that shortlist.

The comprehensive process to select Pasadena's next chief of police has been ongoing and inclusive and the city manager hopes to have it completed early in 2019.

Final EIR for the 710 Freeway Corridor Reveal Next Steps On Nov. 28, State Senator Anthony J. Portantino and California Secretary of Transportation Brian Annis held a press conference to present the final Environmental Impact Report (EIR) for the 710 Freeway Corridor to the public. Spanning 60 years, the completion of the 710 Freeway from Valley Boulevard in Alhambra to the 210 Freeway in Pasadena has been one of the most complex transportation projects in California history.

It is hoped that the final EIR release will end the six decade conflict.

The signed and adopted EIR formally adopts a local street improvement alternative to the multibillion dollar 8-lane tunnel proposed 15 years ago to replace the originally proposed surface freeway route. The initial freeway proposal triggered debate on this issue going back to the Eisenhower administration.

ground, and then via a tunnel. For 60 years, South Pasadena and Alhambra were on opposite sides of the freeway dispute.

Today, mayors from both cities were on hand to welcome the singing of the EIR and have been working collaboratively to solve local transportation needs in both cities.

Over the past 20 years, coalitions of cities lined up supporting both sides of the dispute but ultimately the opposition and substantial costs to complete the tunnel with limited environmental benefit sunk the tunnel.

In 2017, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority voted to pursue a local alternative to the tunnel.

Senator Portantino also unveiled his plan to introduce legislation to formally remove the tunnel from the streets and highways code and to help facilitate the sale of Caltrans owned properties currently in the hands of non-profits.

I

n my opinion, the best example of an entity that is constantly motivated is the sun. It’s a great ball of fire that burns every single second of its life until it eventually has to burn out one day. This 4.5 billion year old star has been burning with passion ever since.

On the other hand, the passion, drive and motivation experienced by humans can die out fairly quickly. This made me wonder, “How does one stay passionate, motivated, and burn just as long as the sun?”

That is why in this installment of Communal Motivation I decided to speak with Dr. Jonie Chung, a chiropractic doctor who resides in Arcadia and has been in the practice for 15 years in the cities of Diamond Bar and

Monrovia.

Chung’s love for her family and her dedication and passion in serving others through her work is what keeps the fire alive and burning inside of her. Her work in helping others is what makes her happy.

“I just feel happy because ... a person can come in with a lot of pain and tears in their eyes and leave the same day 60 to 80 percent better with one treatment. I like how I can see results right away,” Chung said. “It’s ... to make someone's pain go away, so it is very rewarding to at least go through the steps so I can see them coming in not even standing up and leaving like 30 minutes later walking out the door more straight and with less pain.”

Additionally, the expressions of joy the patients are left with on their faces also leave a lasting impression on Chung.

She works long hours

from 8 a.m. - 7 p.m., and sometimes even closing later than that, but she still enjoys waking up in the morning and going to work. In addition to looking forward to work, she also has another reason as to why she looks forward to waking up in the morning.

She jokingly said, “As a parent you are kind of forced to [wake up].”

Regardless, Chung does feel exhaustion despite how rewarding and fulfilling her career is. “Sometimes it is like exercise all day long. Sometimes it can be non-stop; especially Saturday it could be four hours straight of seeing patients without sitting down once, but it goes fast because I like it.”

In times of exhaustion and reaching her limit, she has her ways of recuperating.

One of the ways she recharges is by “taking a nap” - a simple, yet universal method that can be accessible by most people.

Free Naturalization and General Immigration Legal Clinic in Monrovia For low-income Californians through the Justice Bus Project OneJustice’s Justice Bus Project will partner with Immigration Resource Center of San Gabriel Valley (IRCSGV) to provide a free legal clinic for individuals in need of naturalization and general immigration assistance. The clinic will be held on Dec. 8 from

11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at 303 W. Colorado Blvd. in Monrovia. Space for this clinic is limited. To make an appointment, call (323) 739-8093.

Individuals attending the clinic will receive advice from licensed attorneys regarding naturalization

and general immigration and, when possible, application assistance. During the clinic, individuals with appointments will meet one-on-one with volunteer attorneys for naturalization applications, immigration screening, basic advice, assistance, and/or referrals.

A new end-of-year celebration debuts with the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Sip & Savor. On the event menu is an impressive array of offerings for all ages from many of Southern California’s favorite eateries and culinary brands, along with wines and craft brews from throughout the Golden State, plus an exciting line-up of entertainment and up-close viewing of Rose Parade float decorating.

The event takes over the Rosemont Pavilion/ Jackie Robinson Memorial Field near the Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena from Dec. 28-30 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Various ticket prices and packages are available, ranging from general admission of $15 to a deluxe VIP package of $150, and can be purchased in-person at the event or here.

Local Police Agencies Target Street Takeover/Sideshow Events Task force includes Arcadia, Monrovia, and Sierra Madre police departments among others Due to recent street takeover and sideshow events happening in San Gabriel Valley cities, local police agencies have joined to form the West San Gabriel Valley Traffic Task Force.

The WSGV Traffic Task Force consists of members from the Arcadia, El Monte, Alhambra, Sierra Madre, San Marino, and the Monrovia

police departments. Officers assigned to the task force will work proactively to combat street takeovers and associated events in and around the West San Gabriel Valley. There will be zerotolerance for any unlawful activity.

Over the coming days, the task force will be deploying resources to monitor

events associated with the anniversary of the death of Paul Walker. Task force officers encourage anyone attending memorial events to participate in a lawful manner.

Any unlawful activity will result in zerotolerance enforcement. This includes enforcement in public parking lots such as shopping or business lots.

The American Red Cross has an urgent need for blood and platelet donors to give now to ensure blood is available for medical treatments and emergencies during the holiday season.

Blood and platelet donations often decline during the holidays. Regular donors are busy with holiday activities, and travel and severe winter weather may cause blood drive cancellations. Yet donations remain critical for patients like 4-year-old Wyatt Monacelli who is in the midst of intense chemotherapy treatments for leukemia. He has received a number of transfusions since his diagnosis in June and will likely need more.

“We are fortunate to have had so many donors give the gift of life to our child so far throughout the course of his treatment, and even more so, we are lucky to have had a supply of blood available for him when he needed it,” said Julianna Monacelli, Wyatt’s mother.

Donors are urged to give now to ensure that families like Wyatt’s don’t have to worry about the availability of blood this winter. ARCADIA Nov. 18 At approximately 9:13 p.m., an officer responded to a residence in the 100 block of West Pamela Road regarding a domestic disturbance report. The officer discovered a verbal altercation between a husband and wife escalated resulting in the husband grabbing the wife by her arm and pushing her causing her to bruise her arms and leg.

The 28-year-old male from Arcadia was arrested.

Nov. 19 Just after 5:45 a.m., officers responded to the Santa Anita Mall, 400 S. Baldwin Ave., regarding the activation of an Arcadia PD GPS tracking device attached to a bicycles. The officer located two suspects in possession of the stolen bicycle and the suspects’ bolt cutter. A 31-yearold male from Pasadena and a 32-year-old female from Hawthorne were arrested.

Nov. 20 Around 2:45 p.m., an officer responded to KGS Electronics, 418 E. Live Oak Ave., regarding a fraud report.

An investigation revealed unknown suspect(s) hacked into the owner’s email and instructed customers to pay their outstanding invoices by using a fraudulent wire transfer method. One customer paid their invoice through the fraudulent wire transfer system for the amount of $52,000. The legitimate payment went to an unknown

account in Mexico. The investigation has been deferred to the FBI for further investigation.

Nov. 21 Shortly after 1:02 p.m., an officer responded to the area of Old Ranch Road and Huntington Drive regarding a sexual battery report. The victim stated she was walking her dog in the area when an unknown suspect groped her buttocks. The suspect then fled on foot. He is described as a Hispanic male, 18 to 20-years-old, 6-foot-1, with a thin build, a bald head, no facial hair, and seen wearing a white T-shirt and grey basketball shorts.

Nov. 22 Around 5:12 p.m., an officer responded to an injury traffic collision involving a vehicle that had crashed into a pole near 2700 Caroline Way. The officer located the vehicle in the 300 block of Las Tunas Drive and, upon contacting the driver, detected a strong odor of alcohol emitting from his breath. Through a series of tests, the officer determined the suspect was driving with a blood alcohol content of .224 percent. The 54-year-old male from El Monte was arrested.

Nov. 23 Just before 9:15 p.m., an officer responded to a residence in the 00 block of Christina Street regarding a burglary report. An investigation revealed unknown suspects cut a window screen,

entered through an open window, ransacked the home, and fled with passports, cash, social security cards, electronics, and a spare key to her vehicle. No suspects were seen and no witnesses were located.

Nov. 24 Shortly after 9:43 a.m., an officer responded to Lao Xi’er Noodle House, 600 E. Live Oak Ave., regarding a commercial burglary report.

Surveillance footage revealed an unknown suspect threw a rock through the front glass door and fled with the cash register, $100 cash, and a can of soda. The suspect is described as a male, approximately 30 to 40-years-old, with brown hair and a large build. The investigation is ongoing.

At approximately 3:17 p.m., an officer responded to the Santa Anita Mall, 400 S. Baldwin Ave., regarding a theft report. The loss prevention employee witnessed the 28-year-old male from Palmdale steal $560 worth of merchandise from Abercrombie and Fitch. The suspect was arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking.

MONROVIA Nov. 18 At 1:20 a.m., a caller reported a male subject spray painting graffiti on a wall in the 1600 block of South Myrtle at the Monrovia Train

Station. When officers arrived, the subject had fled the area. While the officers were searching for the suspect, one of the officers saw him spray painting another wall three blocks south of the Train Station. When the officer attempted to stop him, the suspect ran, but he was eventually apprehended. He had vandalized a total of 14 businesses and properties.

Nov. 19 At 9:28 a.m., two residents in the 300 block of Fowler and the 700 block of West Foothill reported someone had taken the catalytic converters off their vehicles sometime during the night.

At 3:56 p.m., a resident in the 200 block of East Lime reported her son was in her garage even though he was told to stay away from the property and has been arrested for trespassing in the past.

Nov. 20 At 8:14 a.m., an employee of a business in the 900 block of South Primrose arrived to work and discovered someone had stolen catalytic converters from six of the company vehicles. All six vehicles were parked in front of the business in an unsecure parking lot.

At 9:51 a.m., a resident in the 200 block of East Los Angeles walked outside his home and discovered someone had stolen the tailgate off his pickup truck sometime during the night. This investigation is continuing.

At 10:26 p.m., an employee of a store in the 1600 block of South Mountain reported a customer had presented a fraudulent driver’s license while attempting to purchase an item using store credit. The employee refused to complete the transaction and called the police. The customer ran out of the store. An area search was conducted, but the suspect was not located.

Nov. 21 At 4:07 p.m., a caller reported a road-rage incident that had just occurred in the 100 block of South Myrtle.

The suspect drove alongside the caller and threw a large rock through her open window, striking her leg. The suspect fled the area and could not be located by officers.

At 7:06 p.m., a resident in the 600 block of Royal Oaks reported a motorist had just collided into three parked vehicles and then fled the area. Officers responded and located the motorist still in the area. The driver was found to be under the influence of drugs. After field sobriety tests were conducted, she was arrested for DUI. Nov. 23 At 2:59 a.m., an officer observed a traffic violation in the 800 block of West Foothill and stopped the vehicle.

A computer check revealed the female driver was listed as armed and dangerous with a no-bail warrant out of Sacramento. The warrant was

confirmed and the female was arrested without incident.

SIERRA MADRE Nov. 19 A woman called at about 3:33 a.m., to report that a man was trying to get into her parked vehicle. Officers arrived at the 300 block of North Baldwin Avenue and contacted the subject who was found to be intoxicated. The man was arrested and transported to the Pasadena PD Jail for booking.

Nov. 20 A male riding a bicycle in the 100 block of South Sunnyside Avenue was stopped at about 1:39 a.m. for a vehicle code violation. Upon further investigation, it was discovered that the bicyclist was in possession of narcotic paraphernalia, and three identification cards belonging to other people, he also had two outstanding warrants. The subject was arrested and transported to the Pasadena PD jail.

Nov. 25 Officers responded to a call for service at about 2:40 a.m. regarding a vehicle speeding around the area of Auburn Avenue and Sierra Madre Boulevard. Officers located a vehicle in that area. After contacting the driver of the vehicle, officers administered field sobriety tests. It was determined that the driver was driving under the influence of alcohol. The subject was arrested.

Celebrate With Carols and Choirs in Arcadia

“Joy in This Place” will be the holiday music theme for a Carol-Sing/Cookie-Feast hosted by the Women’s Association of the Arcadia Presbyterian Church.

Everyone is invited to taste some wonderful homemade Christmas cookies and sing favorite carols on Sat., Dec. 4, at 3 p.m.

Several magnificent choirs will be featured.

Tabitha Henken will direct

the combined choirs of Westminster Gardens, Royal Oaks Manor, and New Hope Presbyterian Church. The 77-voice Arroyo High School Choir will be directed by Jennifer Stanley. Pianist John Brunn will accompany both groups.

Ms. Henken will open the festivities with carols played on the church’s beautiful three-manual organ. A cantata, “Joy in

This Place,” is the centerpiece of the choral offerings by the combined choirs. The program will conclude with everyone joining to sing Handel’s glorious “Hallelujah Chorus.”

This is a marvelous opportunity to usher in the holiday season.

Make Your Way Downtown With Monrovia Historic Preservation Group On Saturday, Dec. 1, the Monrovia Historic Preservation Group (MOHPG) will conduct another walking tour of Downtown Monrovia. The cost of the tour is $5 per person with proceeds directly benefiting

MOHPG. The tour covers past and present information about the town and some of the many aspects which make Monrovia such a unique place in which to live.

a.m. at the southeast corner of Myrtle and Palm avenues and lasts about two hours.

or decades families have welcomed “A Christmas Story” as their must-see nostalgic movie to greet the holidays.

Now for the second year in a row they can enjoy it live at the Sierra Madre Playhouse.

Back by popular demand is Ralphie, longing as he always does for a Red Ryder BB gun for his Christmas present.

And back are the adults— parents, teacher, even Santa Claus—who all dismiss his wishes firmly with the same pronouncement: “You’ll shoot your eye out!”

But oh, what Ralphie would do if he had a Red Ryder BB gun. He’d rescue his friends from the wild beasts in Africa.

He’d free them from the

threats of the town bully. And later, he’d be a hero by writing a perfect theme to please Miss Shields, his formidable teacher, played by Danon Dastugue.

Three adults are reprising their roles from last year.

Richard Van Slyke plays the “Old Man,” an erratic father who is enamored of his giant prizewinning lamp shaped like a woman’s leg. Andrea Stradling is the calm, doting mother who smooths out everyone’s problems except Ralphie’s, to whom she insists “You’ll shoot your eye out!”

And Jackson Kendall returns as the adult Ralphie who narrates the memories of his childhood.

Many of the child actors’ roles are double-cast. Young Ralphie can be played by Andre Mora or Sawyer Valin.

Bradley Bundlie and Kevin Ying alternate playing Randy. Other young actors include Marshall

Gluck, Myles Hutchinson, Jude Gomez, Lucas Lim, Kennedy Farr, Charlotte Li, Zoe Cox, Jade Riley, Jax Malcolm, and Griffin Sanford.

“A Christmas Story” will be offered through December, Friday and Saturday nights at 8; and Saturday and Sunday matinees at 2:30 p.m. Additional earlier show times will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, Dec. 21 and 22.

his weekend, California School of the Arts-San Gabriel Valley (CSArts-SGV) and mediaV, a Santa Monicabased production company, will jointly premiere ‘The Merry Lives of Windsor High.’

It will be held on Friday and Saturday, November 30 and December 1, at the Duarte Performing Arts Center.

MediaV founders and philanthropists Russell Meyer and Marcy Shaffer have pledged a gift of $50,000 to CSArts-SGV over the next two years to support the creation of two world premieres, with the intention to continue collaborating over the next several years. Using the works of William Shakespeare as source material, the Incubator Project will create modern and relevant musicals that would subsequently be offered for public license and performance.

“We are thrilled to be given the opportunity to create and contribute original works to the catalog of musicals available today,” pronounces CSArts-SGV Chair of Theatre Jay Wallace. “We hope the material will gain momentum and be performed by high school, college, and community programs across the country.”

Jer Adrianne Lelliott is directing the cast of 26 students, including Melissa Bautista, an 11th grader from Pasadena and Mateo Alfonso, a Monrovia 9th grader. Lelliott says “I directed it just like I would professional theatre.

These young people are as professional as some of the adults I work with. The good thing about teaching and then directing them is that we have a shared vocabulary, so when I say ‘You have to raise the stakes here,’ they know what that means.”

“I would say that this is a broader philosophy of how we approach all our productions here. There should be a collaborative effort, we should show respect, we have a mutual language. We certainly value having a polished professional product and the shows we have mounted, thus far, have demonstrated that. However, process is probably the most vital component to everything that we do. Our philosophical goal throughout the conser-

vatory and theatre acting is our growth, whether as artists or as individuals.”

Wallace adds, “This is also linked to a course that we’ll offer in the spring which will be led by the person who will direct next year’s incubator project. Students will develop the actual product and promote it.

“MediaV deserves a lot of credit for that vision and for coming to us to partner with them. It’s a real sign of reinvesting in youth and theatre arts, specifically to musical theatre, and allowing these students to develop through that process. It’s extremely unique and, quite honestly, a blessing. And to do this in the second year of our school is just insane.”

As the chair of the theatre department, Wallace is aware that the onus to make a success of the project falls squarely on him, “My philosophy is ‘This is my challenge and my opportunity. Embrace it.’”

Regional Task Force 4 Returns to Pasadena

CA-RTF-4, the California OES Regional Task Force, has been demobilized from the Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) Camp Fire incident.

The team performed search

and recovery of 1,144 structures in seven days. The team returned to Pasadena Monday morning.

The 29-member team was first deployed on Nov. 17 to

In 2017, the Pasadena Republican Club contracted with the Western Justice Center for the rental of the Maxwell House in Pasadena to hold an event at which Dr. John Eastman was to be the speaker. Less than two hours before the event was scheduled to start, however, the executive director of the Western Justice Center (retired LA Superior Court Judge Judith Chirlin) sent an email to the president of the Pasadena Republican Club cancelling the event.

Although the Pasadena Republican Club had been allowed to rent the property for speaker events in the past, retired Judge Chirlin explained that Dr. Eastman was unacceptable as a speaker because of his leadership position in a faith-based

organization that promoted “traditional marriage.” The institute alleges that Judge Chirlin’s disagreement with Dr. Eastman’s political and religious views is the sole reason Western Justice Center banned the Pasadena Republican Club from holding its event.

The Maxwell House and neighboring historic properties are owned by the City of Pasadena and leased to the Western Justice Center “for public purposes” of the city.

The city borrowed money that

it granted to Western Justice Center for purposes of repairing and refurbishing these historic properties. In return, the Center paid rent to the city that repaid those loans.

Now that the loans have been repaid, the Center pays only one dollar a month to occupy and manage this city-owned historic property.

edicare enrollment for 2019 is upon us and soon it will be behind us. It is important that you get all your ducks in a row

by Dec. 7, if you are planning on receiving, and/or updating any Medicare benefits or prescription coverage for 2019. There are a couple of more important dates you need to know when it comes to submitting your decisions for Medicare. Don’t let the enrollment process scare you.

It is designed to make enrollment as easy as possible to help you decide the best health plan for you.

One of the most important dates to take into consideration is the Medicare open enrollment dates, which run through Dec. 7. These are crucial dates because you are able to choose and submit the Medicare plans you have chosen if this is your first time signing up. It is also very important because if you miss your deadline for enrollment you may be penalized for signing up for Medicare at a later date. Late penalty fees may go as high as 20 percent,

and you may end up paying late penalty fees for as long as you have Medicare coverage.

You do not need to enroll every year if you are already signed up to a Medicare plan.

However, this is also the time to review your current health and prescription plans, and submit any changes to better fit your needs for 2019. Remember, Dec. 7 is the last day to sign up and to change any Medicare plan or prescription plan you want to receive for 2019.

Jan. 1, 2019 will be when your Medicare plan coverage begins. The choices or updates you made during

open enrollment will become effective by this date. If you kept your previous plans everything will remain the same for 2019 including costs.

If you made new decisions that may affect your existing coverage, prescription plan and/or costs, then all the new changes also become effective on Jan. 1, 2019.

If you are considering choosing the Medicare Advantage plan, Jan. 1 through March 31 are important weeks to remember

because during this time period you can make one change. You can update your plan to a different Medicare plan, if you had a change of heart and miss the Medicare plan you had before and wish to switch back you can do that as well. Any changes that you decide to make will become effective on the first of the month after your new plan receives your request.

The enrollment process is the easy part and now that you have remembered all the

important enrollment dates, it should be a cinch. Save time and money by signing up for Medicare by Dec. 7. Once you have all your decisions set in place, your Medicare benefits are just a click away. The challenging part of Medicare is knowing how to pick the best benefit plan for your health needs. s we head into the holiday season, I wanted to let you know how much your Medicare will cost in 2019.

Most people with Medicare will pay the standard monthly premium for Medicare Part B, which will be $135.50 next year, an increase of $1.50 over 2018.

Part B covers physician services, outpatient hospital services, some home health services, durable medical equipment, and certain other medical and health services not covered by Medicare Part

A.

Your Part B premium is based on your income. People whose tax returns show income equal to or higher than $85,000 pay higher premiums.

These income-adjusted premiums apply to about 5 percent of all Medicare beneficiaries.

The premiums for higherincome beneficiaries for 2019 can be found [at]: cms.gov/ newsroom/fact-sheets/2019medicare-parts-b-premiumsand-deductibles.

The annual deductible for Part B is $185 in 2019, an increase of $2 from 2018.

Medicare Part A covers inpatient hospital, skilled nursing, and some home

health services. The vast majority of Medicare beneficiaries don’t have to pay Part A premiums since they or their spouses paid Medicare payroll taxes for at least 40 quarters (10 years).

The Part A inpatient hospital deductible that beneficiaries pay when admitted to the hospital will be $1,364 in 2019, a $24 increase over 2018.

Monrovia’s Mt. Sierra College Hosts Free Greeting Card Photoshop Workshop Open to the public Mt. Sierra College will host their second annual Photoshop Workshop event, which will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 5 at 800 Royal Oaks Drive, Suite 101 (entrance located behind the water fountain).

This event is an opportunity for community members to learn how to create holiday cards using a smart phone or touch-tablet (WaCom, Huion, Ugee, Turcom, XP-Pen, or any other digital drawing tablet

highly recommended). Steve Bolz, a Mt. Sierra College alumnus who is a current professor and professional photographer, will lead the complimentary workshop.

No prior experience with Photoshop is necessary to attend this event.

This event will begin promptly at 5:30 p.m. in the Theatre located at the Mt. Sierra College campus. Guests are encouraged to take a toy or book to donate to children’s

charity.

Arcadia HS Students Propel to First Place in NASA Challenge Team C from Arcadia High's Engineering Design and Development class took first place at the Orange Regional of the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) Invention Challenge.

This year's competition required teams to take a PVC pipe, 24 inches in length and 2 inches in diameter, from lying horizontally on two blocks of wood to standing upright on its end on a platform in less than 60 seconds. The device must function with no human input other than

an initiating action, such as pulling a pin or pushing a button. The winner is the team who is the quickest at completing the task.

Team C completed the task in 3.1 seconds, while the second place team took more than 6 seconds.

Apaches Anthony Chen, Legolas Chen, Michael Ching, Preston Futaba, Anthony Ge, Jiacheng Hu, Taesung Hwang, Robin Lee, Yuxi Liu and Jefferson Qiu are the first place winners.

Trophies were divided into two categories: JPL

employee/family/contractor and school team entries.

And trophies were given for first, second and third place for each category in both regional and JPL contests.

Additionally, certificates are given for lightest, heaviest, most unusual, most artistic and most creative designs.

Blair students presented an original piece of music composed by Sarah Addison, and the Blair musicians also performed together with students from the three other Los Angeles area high schools who also received Grammy Signature Schools grants.

The Grammy Museum Signature Schools grants in Los Angeles are made possible through the generous support of The Chuck Lorre Family Foundation. Everything Must Go: The Reinvention of Meat District Co.

ituated in Old Town Pasadena, Meat District Co.’s roots go further down (under, that is). Founded by an Australian businessman, for the last few years the restaurant spotlighted a menu of dry-aged, grass-fed ribs, burgers and steaks. Between the ambiance, location and socially-aware ingredients it seemed Meat District Co. had the makings of a winner—but it struggled.

“The previous owner was struggling with basic management principles—I saw so much that would drive me wild,” recalled Agasi Gukasyan, who until this spring had been bartending at the restaurant. His love of hospitality drove him to take a big leap.

“I could see he was trying to get out of it—so I asked him to sell it to me and my mom, Anoush Ketsoyan.”

It was a daring move for Gukasyan, who at age 24 had never ventured into entrepreneurship. But he

wasted no time in working to turn Meat District Co. around.

“I had to clean house and start all over: new menu, new concepts, new staff, new vendors. My goal was

to get people to forget any negative experiences they may have had here before,” Gukasyan explained. With new executive chef Patrick Dickinson by his side to reimagine the menu,

Gukasyan made authenticity—and a strong sense of ethics—his guiding lights.

“When you say that you serve the best food, you should be able to deliver on that,”

he said. “The first day I took over I said that we must sell what we advertise.”

So what does Meat District Co. advertise? A more hands-on dining experience, for one. There’s a dry-aging room in the middle of the floor where the restaurant’s charcuterie, cheeses and choicest cuts are displayed. You can even point to the steak you want before it goes on the fire, prepared in an open kitchen where you can see the action.

But perhaps more than anything, elevated ingredients were central to Gukasyan’s reinvention of the restaurant, with the young owner even bringing in world-renowned cheesemaker Rodolphe Le Meunier to source Meat District Co.’s butter and dairy products.

For Gukasyan, the end result is a menu worth revisiting.

“Our beef cuts are handpicked and grass-fed—a little gamier and melt-inyour-mouth tender. One recommendation would be our hanger steak. It’s the cut that butchers would keep behind for themselves and

a steal at $24, with a flavor that beats out ‘fancier’ cuts on quality and taste. And you haven’t had butter until you’ve tasted our Normandy butter,” he said.

Now that the grand re-opening has come and gone, Gukasyan, Dickinson and team can settle into their new identity in Old Town. It’s a new path for the young restaurateur, but he’s eager to show Pasadena a new side to Meat District Co. “We’re not taking shortcuts. I’m on the floor every day as a new owner. Patrick and Robert, my chefs, are kickin’ butt in the kitchen,” said Gukasyan. “If I could say anything to Pasadena, it would be to come give us a second chance. We’re here and happy to serve you.”

Relaxing at Hilton San Diego Resort and Spa

here are many great sights and sounds that come to mind when thinking about my recent escape to the Hilton San Diego Resort and Spa. There are ocean breezes flowing through palm trees, a crystal blue pool sparkling in the sun; sprawling Tahitianinspired grounds surrounded by a sandy beach, and ducks – yes ducks.

For some reason I keep thinking of these little webfooted creatures. Maybe it’s the soothing sounds their feathers made against the water when they swam past our room. The sound was similar to a trickling fountain and went very well with a glass of wine and the sunset on San Diego’s Mission Bay. My getaway to the Hilton began when a friend and I checked into a comfortable suite at the 357-room resort.

The Southern Californian-styled room featured bright and festive hues and came with a large flat screen TV, comfy king bed, lounge chair, office area with internet, and a big balcony.

From the balcony we could scan the beautiful bay, watch kayaks and boats drift past, ducks paddle by and the sun

set into the water.

When not in the room, we explored the rest of the fourdiamond property. Celebrating 50 years on Missions Bay the resort is a recreational paradise on 18 acres. The resort is about 1 mile from Sea World, just 6 miles from the San Diego International Airport and 15 minutes from the Gaslamp District and La

Jolla.

One of our favorite hotel spots was the pool area, where we swam in the warm water and relaxed in a big cabana with soft recliners. I

’ve been talking to a number of job seekers lately about illegal interview questions.

They keep coming up, and I keep asking myself why that is. When you’re a job seeker, you may not realize how common illegal questions are because you’re interviewing for only one or two jobs at a time. But, surprisingly, they’re popping up in job interviews quite a bit.

Common illegal questions include: What is your marital status? How many children do you have? Are you planning to have more children? How old are you?

Honestly, it’s hard to understand why these questions are coming up. I have wondered how hiring managers don’t seem to know what not to ask. And,

I’ve wondered why they’re even asking at all.

In some cases, the hiring manager may be simply trying to make small talk. They may be trying to get to know you. But, it’s really hard to say. In some cases, the hiring manager is clearly asking the question for unethical reasons. But, in other cases, someone may have been trying to make casual conversation and may have unknowingly stumbled into murky waters.

So, why does it keep happening? My best guess is this. Hiring managers are rarely trained on what not to ask. Human resources often assume that in today’s day in age, we all know what not to ask. Then, when the hiring manager does ask these questions, the candidate doesn’t react negatively. The reason is this: if you want the job,

you don’t get upset by a potentially off-putting question. That’s a fast way to eliminate yourself from the candidate pool. So, the hiring manager gets no feedback in the moment.

After the hiring process, if you’re not selected, you have little to no interaction with the company. You are at times lucky to get an automated rejection email for your time.

Isn’t it incredible that for two centuries after Christ lived, no one knew or cared when he was born?

And yet that makes sense, because in biblical times only death days were noted – no one celebrated birthdays. In fact, the Church declared that it was a sin to contemplate observing the Savior’s birth “as though He were King Pharaoh.”

It wasn’t until 313 A.D., after Emperor Constantine decreed Christianity as the state religion, that Christmas was officially celebrated on Dec. 25. Up until then, Christians never caroused, ate or drank to excess … or rushed to the mall to buy a bunch of stuff with their credit cards. They only went to church and prayed.

So, if we want to blame someone for the stress we endure during the Christmas holidays, we need look no further than Emperor Constantine. He started it

all.

The cover story with the great photo on Thursday was incredible. I think it really helped us pack the stadium with around 5,000 people. Something that we haven’t been able to do in years. It was great to see the community come together in this way and rally around a common cause. We had everyone from current students, future students, staff, community, and alumni dating all the way back to the 1960s.

U.S. SMALL BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION ANNOUNCES DISASTER DECLARATION FOR LOS ANGELES COUNTY The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has issued a disaster declaration for Los Angeles County that will make low-interest federal disaster loans available to businesses and residents impacted by the Woolsey Fire announced SBA Administrator Linda McMahon. This SBA disaster declaration covers Los Angeles, Butte and Ventura counties as a result of the wildfires that began in California this month.

Businesses of all sizes and private nonprofit organizations may borrow up to $2

million to repair or replace damaged or destroyed real estate, machinery and equipment, inventory and other business assets. SBA can also lend additional funds to businesses and homeowners to help with the cost of improvements to protect, prevent or minimize the same type of disaster damage from occurring in the future.

For small businesses, small agricultural cooperatives, small businesses engaged in aquaculture and most private nonprofit organizations of any size, SBA offers Economic

Injury Disaster Loans to help meet working capital needs caused by the disaster.

Disaster loans up to $200,000 are available to homeowners to repair or replace damaged or destroyed real estate. Homeowners and renters are eligible for up to $40,000 to repair or replace damaged or destroyed personal property. Interest rates can be as low as 3.74 percent for businesses, 2.75 percent for private nonprofit organizations and 2 percent for homeowners and renters with terms up to 30 years.

Loan amounts and terms are set by SBA and are based on each applicant’s financial condition.

Life Sentence for Man Who Sexually Assaulted Three Women In Pomona A 25-year-old man was sentenced to 35 years to life in state prison for sexually assaulting three homeless women in Pomona last year, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

On Sept. 12, a jury found Charlie Nathan Paxton of

Chino Hills guilty of two counts of forcible rape and one count each of assault with intent to commit rape, assault by means of force likely to produce great bodily injury, second-degree robbery and kidnapping to commit rape with allegations of kidnapping and aggravated

kidnapping during a sexual assault.

Deputy District Attorney Brendan Gibson said Paxton also was ordered to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.

According to evidence presented at the trial, Paxton targeted transient women

in Pomona. The attacks occurred between September and November 2017, the prosecutor said.

The defendant was captured after the victim of a robbery and attempted sexual assault on Nov. 9, 2017, helped police identify him, the prosecutor added.

And with just one swing of a foot, Arcadia’s magical playoff run is over.

On a night that saw two heavyweights exchange blow for blow, it was Kaiser’s late go-ahead field goal that earned it the 38-35 win over the Apaches in the CIF-SS Division 8 Championship game on Friday.

It had been 40 years since Arcadia reached the promise land. The last time the Apaches made it this far was in 1978 when they lost 21-17 to Compton in the Costal Division final.

Unfortunately for Arcadia, history would repeat itself as the Apaches suffered a heartbreaking defeat at the hands of the Kaiser Cats. The two juggernauts were on a collision course all postseason long as Kaiser was riding a 12-game win streak while Arcadia was on a 10-game win streak.

One thing for sure was that Friday’s championship bout lived up to expectations.

Arcadia set the tone first, going up 7-0 after Demarco Moorer capped off a solid drive with a 9-yard touch-

down.

Kaiser answered back twice as hard when quarterback Trey Tribble and top rusher in the state Christian Hunter scored consecutive touchdowns that were sparked by an Arcadia fumble.

This gave the Cats a 14-7 lead late in the first quarter.

Hunter proved to be the Apaches’ bane the entire night, running for an incredible 323 yards with three touchdowns.

The Pacific League champs quickly regrouped after falling behind as Dylan Guerra (19 of 24, 244 yards, two TDs) did what he does best and connected with Rolandiss Whitener on a 45-yard pass. This set up Moorer where he found the end zone once more to even the game at 14.

In the second quarter, Arcadia and Kaiser traded touchdowns but the Apaches would regain a 28-21 lead to take into the half. This was thanks to yet another stellar play from Guerra, who scoped out Ahmad Lipscomb for a 32-yard touchdown.

This seesaw battle

continued in the second half as Hunter was at it again, dialing in another touchdown to tie the game at 28 in the third. However, the Apaches got out in front one last time when Guerra tossed it to wide receiver Frankie Contreras for the touchdown.

With a 35-28 lead in the third, the Apaches were a mere quarter away from their first-ever championship.

But despite having a slight control of the game, Arcadia’s struggles to take the ball would rear their ugly head.

After Moorer intercepted a pass from Tribble, the Apaches fumbled the ball inches away from Kaiser’s end zone. The mishap lit a fire in the Cats as none other than Hunter tied the game at 35 with a monumental 44-yard touchdown run.

Guerra would then follow that up with an uncharacteristic interception, which ultimately set Kaiser up for the play of the night. With three seconds left on the clock, Cats sophomore kicker Michael Mosqueda hit a 26-yard field goal to seal the 38-35 championship win for Kaiser.

Pasadena Squads on Full Display at Rose City Classic Tournament

our Pasadena-based schools, including Pasadena, Muir, La Salle and hosts Maranatha, hit the hardwood on Tuesday to tip off the 17th Annual Rose City Roundball Classic.

The Southern California renowned tournament is a six-day expedition in which 16 teams duke it out for the title in a double-elimination bracket.

Half of the first-round matches took place on Monday while the other half took place on Tuesday. All Pasadena teams played their opening game on Tuesday as La Salle took on Alemany, Muir took on Oaks Christian, Pasadena took on Culver City and Maranatha took on St. Genevieve.

behind for a majority of the contest.

Alemany’s defense proved too robust, preventing La Salle from getting anything going. The Lancers kept the deficit within single digits until early in the third when the Warriors eventually ran away with the lead and a 74-58 win.

Muir vs. Oaks Christian The Mustangs got off to sluggish start in the first quarter against the Lions but quickly rebounded in the second to take a 26-24 lead at the half.

To Muir’s dismay, Oaks Christian turned the tides

for good, regaining the lead in a methodical and effective fashion. Muir kept it interesting all the way through but wound up falling 63-56.

Ethan Fleming finished with 21 points for the Mustangs.

Pasadena vs. Culver City With the Pasadena schools going 0-2 halfway through the day, the Bulldogs decided it was time to get in the win column.

Monrovia Bags Eight Goals in Dominant Win Over Duarte As high as some falcons have been known to fly, it’s the Wildcats that are flying even higher as the Monrovia girls’ soccer team improves to 3-0 with its latest 8-0 dismantling of Duarte on Tuesday.

While it is still early in the season, Monrovia is already looking much more polished than they did last year where they went winless in league play. Head Coach Carlos Cuellar said he is putting a lot of emphasis on ball posses-

sion and ball movement to break down opposing defenses, which worked like a charm against the Falcons.

“We have a very united group, we all get along,” Cuellar said. “Everybody is committed, everybody is there, and they all have a goal in mind, which is to make it to CIF again.”

Despite the Wildcats’ flurry of goals – in which six different players scored – it was their defense that put

the offense in good positions while completely thwarting any threat Duarte threw their way.

Gabriela Fajardo and Jessie Alvarado terrorized the Duarte backline all night, each knocking in a brace while recording a combined three assists.

The Wildcats will face their biggest challenge yet when they square off with a strong Arcadia side on Thursday.
