unday, Nov. 11 is Veterans Day. From noon to 2 p.m. veterans and their families are invited to stop by and visit the Arcadia Vietnam War Memorial at the north end of the Arcadia County Park. Gene Glasco, the memorial’s founder will be there to present the Secretary of Defense approved Vietnam Veteran lapel pin to any veteran who served on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces at any time during the period of Nov. 1, 1955 to May 15, 1975, regardless of location.

All U.S. military veterans of this era are eligible to receive one lapel pin for their service.

If you haven’t already visited the Arcadia Vietnam War Monument this weekend would be a good time to do so. The monument was built in honor of 14 Arcadia men that were casualties of the war in Vietnam. However, it stands in tribute to all service members - its plaques contain the names of veterans that served in WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam and Afghanistan. Visiting the Arcadia Vietnam War Memorial

Pasadena Salutes Veterans The Pasadena community is invited to join civic leaders, special guests, military veterans and active members of the U.S. armed forces for a Veterans Day commemoration Sunday, Nov. 11, beginning at 10:30 a.m. in front of Pasadena City Hall, 100 N. Garfield Ave. Former Pasadena Mayor William E. Thomson, chair of the Veterans Day steering committee and a U.S. Army veteran, will serve as master of ceremonies.

With the theme “Pasadena Salutes Our Veterans,” the event will include patriotic music and a color guard from a local high school.

The National Anthem will be sung by Monet Bagneris, a singer, songwriter and musician whose grandfather, Marion Meredith Beal, was the first African-American to serve at the U.S. Marine Corps national headquarters in Washington, D.C., during the second world war and an original member of the Montford Point Marine Association, an organization of African-American U.S. Marines.

A decline in donations occurs from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day when donors are busy with holiday activities and travel. The Red Cross is

ARCADIA Oct. 28 At approximately 9:04 a.m., officers responded to the intersection of Duarte Road and Holly Avenue regarding a suspect seen taking mail from multiple mail boxes. Officers located the suspect and determined he was in possession of the stolen mail, a blank check, fraudulent cash, and stolen debit and credit cards. The 37-year-old male from San Gabriel was arrested.

Oct. 29 Just after 12:02 a.m., officers responded to the intersection of Temple City Boulevard and Duarte Road regarding a vehicle blocking the roadway. They located the parked vehicle and discovered the driver had fallen asleep at the wheel. Through a series of tests, the officer determined the suspect was driving under the influence of marijuana and alcohol. The 28-year-old male from Temple City was arrested.

Around 10:53 a.m., an officer responded to Arcadia Market Place, 288 E. Live Oak Ave., regarding a grand theft report. An investigation revealed unknown suspect(s) opened an unsecured electrical panel door and stole approximately $3,000 worth of circuit breakers. No suspects were seen.

Oct. 30 At about 11:04 p.m., an officer responded to the 1000 block of South Baldwin Drive

regarding a grand theft report.

Sometime between 10:30 a.m. and 11 p.m. on Oct. 30, an unknown suspect cut and stole the victim’s catalytic converter from his Ford F-250.

No suspects were seen and no witnesses were located.

Oct. 31 Shortly after 8:28 a.m., an officer responded to the area of 100 E. La Sierra Drive regarding the activation of an Arcadia Police Department GPS tracker. An investigation revealed two suspects had the stolen bait package in their vehicle. The suspects also had a 9-year-old in the car at the time of the crime.

The 41-year-old female from Glendora and a 39-year-old male from South El Monte were arrested. The Department of Child and Family Services was contacted.

Nov. 1 Around 8:09 a.m., an officer responded to Q Gifts, 11746 Clark St., Unit A, regarding a commercial burglary report. The officer determined unknown suspect(s) forced entry through the main door, stole backpacks and a box of tshirts, and punctured a hole in the wall in an attempt to enter the adjoining office. No suspects were seen and no witnesses were located.

Nov. 2 At about 12:13 a.m., officers initiated an enforcement stop on a vehicle near the intersection of Baldwin Avenue and Gate 8 of the Santa Anita Race Track for

driving without license plates on the vehicle. Upon contacting the driver, the 61-year-old male transient from Arcadia was seen with a meth pipe in the vehicle. During a search of the vehicle, the officer located nine fraudulent $100 bills. A records check revealed the suspect also had an outstanding felony warrant. He was arrested.

Nov. 3 At approximately 7:49 a.m., officers responded to a residence in the 00 block of Genoa Street regarding a battery report. An investigation revealed the female victim was choked by the suspect after she declined his advances.

The suspect, a 55-year-old male from Covina, was arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking.

A records check revealed the victim, a 34-year-old from Huntington Park, had an outstanding misdemeanor warrant. She too was arrested.

MONROVIA

Oct. 29 At 9:05 a.m., officers responded to the 1600 block of Myrtle Avenue regarding a male suspect that punched another male and fled. When officers arrived, the victim was bleeding from the neck. An officer located the suspect, but he fled. A brief foot pursuit ensued and the suspect was detained. It was determined that the suspect struck the victim on the neck with a rock.

He was arrested and taken into custody.

At 8:49 p.m. a theft was reported at a business in the 100 block of West Foothill. A male suspect made numerous trips inside the location, stealing bottles of alcohol.

Officers arrived and detained the suspect. A second suspect was located inside a vehicle in the parking lot. The vehicle contained over $600 worth of stolen alcohol. Both suspects were arrested.

The victim parked her car at the location and went for a walk in Canyon Park. When she returned to her vehicle, she was met by a park ranger, who told her the window on her vehicle had been shattered. The victim checked her vehicle and saw her purse was missing.

Nov. 1 At 1:04 a.m. officers responded to a business in the 400 block of South Myrtle regarding a disturbing subject inside the bar area. Officers arrived and located the man, who was trying to avoid the officers and attempted to run from them. He was eventually detained. The subject was too intoxicated to care for his own safety and the safety of others.

He was arrested.

At 5:22 a.m. officers were dispatched to a burglary alarm activation at a business in the 700 block of East Huntington.

Upon arrival, officers discovered the front glass door had been broken. They searched the interior of the business, with negative results.

Oct. 28 Oct. 30 At 3:08 a.m. officers responded to a solo-vehicle traffic accident with a vehicle on its side. Officers arrived and discovered a power pole down and lines broken. The driver was taken to a hospital and was checked for being under the influence. This DUI investigation is ongoing.

At 6:11 p.m. officers responded to a possible domestic battery between a male and female adult at a residence in

The business has been broken into numerous times in recent months. The suspect entered the business, stole money and fled. The suspect made entry by breaking a window.

Oct. 31 At 6:38 a.m. a vehicle burglary was reported in the

SIERRA MADRE Oct. 28 At approximately 10:54 p.m. officers conducted a traffic stop at North Canon and Highland Avenue. A registration check of the vehicle showed the current plate was expired for over a year but the vehicle displayed a current tab.

The driver admitted the tab belonged to a different vehi-

cle. The driver also had an open container of alcohol in the vehicle and admitted to drinking alcohol while driving. The driver was cited and released, the vehicle was impounded. The case was referred to the district attorney’s (DA) office.

Oct. 29 A pedestrian was contacted at about 2:36 a.m. for a vehicle code violation and eventually arrested after the person provided officers with false identification and was in possession of narcotics paraphernalia. Subject was transported to the Pasadena PD jail. Case was referred to the DA’s office.

At 8:30 a.m. a resident in the 300 block of West Sierra Madre Boulevard contacted the Department to report that an unknown suspect(s) shattered the front passenger side window of her vehicle, sometime between 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 28 to 8:30 a.m. on Oct. 29. No property was taken from vehicle.

Oct. 31 Around 2:30 p.m. officers arrested a male subject for trespassing in the 100 block of North Baldwin Avenue.

Nov. 4 A vehicle was stopped for a vehicle code violation. The driver was found to be under the influence of marijuana and was impaired. The driver was arrested and transported to the SMPD jail for a drug recognition evaluation and later transported to Pasadena jail for booking.

The first official Armistice Day was held on Nov. 11, 1919 to commemorate the first anniversary of the end of World War I. Then in 1926 Congress passed a resolution for an annual observance and Nov. 11 became a national holiday beginning in 1938. As a result of lobbying by veterans’ service organizations, Armistice Day was changed to Veterans Day in 1954 when President Eisenhower signed the legislation. Unlike Memorial Day, Veterans Day became a day to honor all of America’s veterans, living or dead.

I

reland is a magical place of castles, green hills, idyllic towns and rolling rivers. It is also modern and lively and full of energy.

I recently returned from a week in the Emerald Isle and the memories are still dancing in my head.

My getaway began at Dublin Airport, where a friend and I rented a car for a trip down the Southern Coast.

The adventure appeared off to a perfect start until we discovered the stick shift and steering wheel on the left side of the car. After a couple geargrinding hours of European roundabouts and unknown speed limits, I finally got the hang of it and somehow made it to the Harcourt Hotel (harcourthotel.ie) in downtown Dublin.

The hotel features 104 cozy, efficient rooms, a full service restaurant called “1900,”.

The property currently incorporates eight Georgian listed buildings, one of which was a former

home to George Bernard Shaw.

Once acquainted with our room, we walked to downtown Dublin. Located on the Liffey River, the city is modern and medieval. City highlights include a magnificent Norman/Gothic- influenced Christ Church Cathedral, built in 1038; the Dublin Castle built in 1208; and the moat-surrounded Drimnagh Castle.

We followed the Irish Sea to the Port of Wexford.

Along the way we traversed rolling green hills, speckled with thousands of fluffy white sheep and herds of slow-moving cattle. Down a secluded road we encountered the mysterious Johnstown Castle (johnstowncastle.ie), built between the 15th and 18th centuries. Eerie and beautiful, the gothic revivalstyled castle welcomed us with giant stone turrets, lush ornamental gardens and a serene lake. The gardens are a popular destination for walks and picnics.

families beginning in the 12th century. Since then it has changed hands numerous times, while different parts of the castle were constructed.

By 1863, the estate grew and featured more than 1,000 acres, hundreds of trees and three lakes.

The castle property also features the Irish Agricultural Museum, which displays one of the most comprehensive displays of farming and rural life in Ireland. The museum, which has been around for over 40 years, offers 19 different exhibitions – everything from tractors to country kitchens.

From the castle we drove to the storybook County of Wexford (visitwexford. ie), where we found colorful buildings, medieval cobblestone streets and fishing boats.

enor Todd Wilander grew up in Arcadia, attended Arcadia High School in the late 1980s, then went to California State University in Los Angeles (Cal State). Little did he know then that he would be traveling the globe, performing the works of venerated opera composers in worldfamous concert halls.

Wilander is one of four featured guest soloists in the Verdi Chorus 35th anniversary season which culminates with its Fall 2018 concert ‘Passione! Opera!’ for two performances only at the First United Methodist Church in Santa Monica on November 10 and 11 at 7:30 pm. He has been praised by the New York Times for his ‘brave, vocally assured portrayals,’ and he has returned for eight seasons, thus far, with The Metropolitan Opera.

Tracing his extraordinary path that led to opera, Wilander recalls, “At Arcadia High, I was a member of ‘Chanteurs,’ and I also sang in the Arcadia Presbyterian Church choir. Dr. Thomas Miyake, who was the choir conductor and head of church music, was also a professor in Music Studies and the Choir Director at Cal State. When I was looking at colleges, he mentioned that he could get me a scholarship if I was interested in going there. I enjoyed it so much that I decided to pursue singing and went to Northwestern University in Chicago to earn my Master’s degree.”

“From Chicago, I moved to Kansas City,” continues Wilander. “It was while I was there that I tried out for The Metropolitan Opera competition and was chosen as one of five winners. The next year I won a foundation competition and moved to Berlin where I lived and worked for three years; I was in my 20s. That led to performances in Italy and elsewhere in the world.”

Wilander’s association with Verdi Chorus began almost two decades ago. He relates, “I knew Anne Marie Ketchum, its conductor and founding artistic director, when I was a Cal State undergrad. We became friends and we would get in touch from time to time. Around 2013, she told me about Verdi Chorus and invited me to be a

tenor soloist.

“This concert is a great opportunity for people to hear a wide variety of the Top Ten Opera,” Wilander describes. “We’ll do selections from Verdi’s ‘Aida’ and Boito’s ‘Mephistopheles.’ We’ll do a big chunk of ‘The Tales of Hoffman’ by Offenbach and ‘Samson and Delilah’ by SaintSaens. So it’s French, German, and Italian.

“There’s a reason that this art form has lasted over 400 years – because it tells a story of love, passion, betrayal, anger, of human emotions we go through every day. And, in the world we live in today, it’s good to be reminded that there’s more than what we see on CNN and Fox News.

There’s more humanity and love to go around.”

decade ago there would have been no place to take in a Panto show in Southern California. But in 2010 the Lythgoes, known for their creativity and involvement in television hits ‘American Idol’ and ‘So You Think You Can Dance,’ changed all that when they mounted their first Panto production in North Hollywood.

In 2013 Lythgoe Family Panto took its Christmas show to the Pasadena Playhouse where it gained such a huge following that two years ago they had to move to a larger venue. This year will be their second time at the Pasadena Convention Center, their ninth in Southern California.

Kris and Becky Lythgoe, the couple behind the Panto company, together with Sheldon Epps, erstwhile Artistic Director of the Pasadena Playhouse and a Lythgoe Panto producer, launched this year’s ‘The Wonderful Winter of Oz’ at a party held recently at Bistro 45.

Enlightening us on why they want Panto to be an American holiday tradition, Kris states, “I was raised in England, where Panto is a vehicle that introduces theatre to kids. My childhood memories include seeing ‘The Grinch,’ ‘A Christmas Carol,’ and ‘The Nutcracker’ in Panto, which were so exciting for children because they were interactive. Now that I’ve moved here, I would like to be able to do the same thing for my children.”

“People tell us British Panto is more boring than its American counterpart. Most of the fairytales have been adapted into Disney movies which are very popular so everyone is familiar with them. We also hire professional performers so the singing is far superior.”

Adds Becky, “We also use better props. For instance, if an actor refers to a horse, there will be an actual horse on stage or, at the very least, something resembling it. The quality of our productions is definitely higher.”

As the writer, Kris likewise has to keep coming up with interesting shows. He discloses, “There are several

fairy tales from The Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen. However, I’m not limiting myself to European fairy tales – ‘The Wizard of Oz’ is a very American story.” “‘The Wonderful Winter of Oz’ is a play on the Frank Capra classic,” describes Kris.

“It follows the same story line, except that Dorothy gets swept away by a blizzard instead of a tornado, and it’s interactive. We have famous actors playing the various characters but our biggest ‘get’ is Kermit the Frog who’ll be our Wizard. And the reason we wanted him is because Emerald City is green.”

Interjects Becky, “And also because Kermit sings the ‘Rainbow Connection’ and the song Dorothy sings is ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow.’ So there are those links.”

“This is the first time Kermit will be in Pasadena so we’re very excited,” states a giddy Kris. To which Becky inserts, “This will also mark the first time Kermit will be on stage to play a role other than himself.”

Not even Kermit is immune to the attractions of Panto. The Lythgoes have outdone themselves again.

raftsman Weekend will be happening in the City of Pasadena and it will come and go faster than a blink of an eye. This amazing tradition will begin on Friday Nov. 9 and last through Sunday Nov. 11.

The Pasadena Heritage’s 27th Annual Craftsman Weekend will feature workshops, bus tours, exclusive programming and much more. This year however there will be something different and exciting added to the list of events

that make this weekend more than a celebration of the craftsman movement.

Back in the early 1900’s there was an architectural movement where art and ceramics were the main focus for many skilled craftsmen. The City of Pasadena is home for many recognizable examples of this time period.

This year however there will be a special presentation featuring Asian influence on craftsman architecture.

On Friday Nov. 9 from 1 – 4 p.m. there will be an Asian Influence bus tour. The tour will describe the connection between some of the Asian

influence on the English craftsmen and architecture many houses and gardens have that set these beautiful masterpieces apart. There will be many bus tours scheduled throughout the weekend featuring all the historic beauty that surround the streets of Pasadena.

WINTERFEST Continued From Page 1

Santa Anita Park has teamed up with professional event service Odd Market to bring a celebration of winter to the city, in the first year of what may prove to be a local tradition.

Odd Market has been organizing family-themed events since 1991. Recent events include Odd Nights at the Autry, which hosts vendors from food trucks to mobile antiques at the Autry Museum of the American West.

The park is approved to operate an ice skating rink, Christmas tree lot, over 60 pop-up shops and

food vendors, a petting zoo, carolers, horse-drawn carriage rides, Santa’s Village, seasonal food, live music and of course, Santa himself.

Admission is $5, and children under 3 may enter free of charge.

According to the city staff report, the event is expected to draw 10,000 visitors each week. The festival is likely to draw attention and patrons from around Southern California as well, and the nearly 6,000 parking spaces at the racetrack will provide adequate parking for patrons.

Councilmember Peter Amundson asked the city

for an attendance comparison between Winterfest expectation and the 626 Night Market, to which the staff remarked was nearly double, drawing in 19,000-32,000 visitors per weekend.

Other major winterthemed festivals in Southern California include Winter Fest at the OC Fair and Event Center, which charges more than double the entrance fee and opens nearly a month later.

Police Pursuit Ends in Multi-Vehicle Traffic Collision in Arcadia A suspected drunk driver sought in connection with a hit-and-run crash Monday night was taken into custody after a high speed pursuit in the San Gabriel Valley ended in a violent collision in Arcadia.

The second crash took place around 9:40 p.m. in the intersection of Baldwin Avenue and Huntington Drive in Arcadia. The pursuit vehicle was speeding through the intersection when it hit two vehicles causing one to be on its side.

isually impaired students at Longley Way Elementary School (Longley Way) are given the opportunity to apply their unique learning styles and abilities in the classroom.

Longley Way’s Megan Robinson, special education teacher for the visually impaired, makes it possible for her students to develop their strengths, helping them learn and discover school material in their own way.

“This class consists of low-vision students (i.e. students whose acuities measure 20/200

or worse) and non-sighted students (blind), and they range between the first and the fifth grade of school,” explained Robinson.

A normal school day for a student in the program begins with lessons on language arts and math early in the morning. Later into the day, students interact with their sighted peers socially and academically through other school subjects, such as health and social studies.

ymnastics made headlines this week in the form of Simone Biles, making history once again by clinching medals in every event at the World Gymnastics Championship.

She’s undoubtedly inspired plenty of kids to explore the sport - but to Brian Smith of GymnastiKids and TNT Dunk Squad, it’s not all about the gold.

“Our gym is different: it’s a no-pressure, fun atmosphere,” said Smith, a lifelong gymnast who opened GymnastiKids in Pasadena in 2003. “We're not necessarily creating Olympians, but teach kids of all ages to have fun, gain confidence and get exercise.”

The fun of the sport is what keeps Smith, 53, up and at it every day. A three-time All American, Smith pursued gymnastics throughout high school, college and beyond.

“I moved from Massachusetts to Los Angeles to study stunt work, and was teaching gymnastics in Burbank on the side. One day, I read an ad that needed trampoline dunkers for the Bud Light Daredevils—and I ended up making it.

We toured all over the United States during basketball season, then internationally during the off-season,” he said. “After three years, I started a mobile gymnastics program to teach the sport at

schools—but realized I didn’t want to carry a balance beam into a preschool when I was sixty. That’s when I started GymnastiKids.”

While Smith still offers mobile classes and even birthday parties, the GymnastiKids gymnasium also teaches kids core basics: balance beam, tumbling, bars and vaulting. The custom-built gym includes an in-ground trampoline, tumble track and loose foam

Dallas-based Studio Movie Grill (SMG) is converting a former traditional movie house in Monrovia into its full concept cinema eatery and in the process, bringing more jobs and visitors to the city of Monrovia.

Currently, there are approximately 30 remaining positions at the theatre. Applicants interested in becoming SMG team members at Monrovia can interview for heart of the house roles such as line cooks, prep cooks, dish washers, and food expos.

I should have seconded the opinions of both Laura Garrett and Mickey Long about the needed dredge to return the lake to some semblance of health, but the historic walls have been at the front of my mind lately.

At least among us we got in most of the salient points (and your rundown of Prop 3 was an interesting addition).

Tetra Tech is bringing in their surveyor next Monday to document the wall’s current and past configuration. We anticipate delivery of construction documents for the wall about mid-December.

Take [sic] you on my perimeter tour walk one of these days!

Man Charged with Killing Girl in Taco Stand Crash Suspect was under the influence of Nitrous Oxide A man has been charged with killing a young girl in a car crash at a taco stand while he was driving under the influence of nitrous oxide last year, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

Joe Louis Perez (dob 12/12/95) of Boyle Heights was charged with one felony count each of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and driving under the influence of a drug causing injury. The charges include allegations of causing great bodily injury.

He is scheduled to be arraigned in Department 30 of the Foltz Criminal Justice Center. Case BA471919 was filed for arrest warrant on Oct. 5.

On Nov. 10, 2017, Perez was driving a car on Whittier Boulevard in Boyle Heights when he allegedly collided with a parked vehicle near Marietta Street, prosecutors said. The impact caused the second car to go over the curb and hit a group of people gathered at a taco stand, killing 11-year-old Elektra Yepez, a resident of the neighborhood.

The girl’s mother and two aunts also were injured in the crash. None of the four passengers who were in the defendant’s vehicle was seriously injured.

Perez is accused of driving under the influence of nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, resulting in the collision, prosecutors said. He was arrested at the scene.

Perez faces a possible maximum sentence of 13 years and eight months in state prison if convicted as charged. Prosecutors are recommending bail be set at $230,000.

The case is being prosecuted by the DUI Training and Prosecution Section (DTAPS).

Arcadia Tennis Eyes to Keep Building on Perfect Season

he goal of a dream season is still alive and well as Arcadia girls’ tennis went undefeated in the regular season, put together an impressive showing at league finals and opened the playoffs on the right foot.

While most sports seasons have their ups and their downs, it’s safe to say that Apaches experienced quite a bit more of the former than the latter. Along with

going 23-0 overall and 12-0 in league play, Arcadia won each match by an average of nearly 12 points.

After defeating Pasadena 18-0 to officially capture the Pacific league championship on Oct. 18, the Apaches went into league finals Oct. 24 at Burroughs High School as the heavy favorites.

In doubles action, Arcadia dominated across the board as the duo of Michelle Deng and Lauren Ko defeated fellow Apaches Angela Qiu and Sunny Ng to win their third straight league title.

Following league finals, Arcadia competed in their

tightest battle yet as it edged out Peninsula 10-8 in the CIF-SS Open Division First Round on Nov. 1.

As of the publishing of this article, Arcadia will have taken on Campbell Hall in the CIF-SS Open Division Semifinals on Wednesday. The winner of that match will play the winner between University and Corona del Mar in the finals at the Claremont Club on Friday.

Monrovia Crumbles in Season-Ending Loss to Palm Desert Monrovia football looked to make big noise in this year’s Division IX CIF playoffs, but their efforts ultimately fell short as it lost 52-28 to Palm Desert in the first round on Friday.

This season turned out to be similar to last year’s as Monrovia was blown out by Yorba Linda 44-21 in the first round of CIF. The only difference was that the Wildcats won the league title last season.

La Salle would like to thank Interim Coach Andrew Pankow for his leadership and dedication during the 2018 season. Coach Pankow and his staff’s effort during this year of transition is greatly appreciated and their dedication should be commended.

At this point, the search for a new head coach will begin immediately. La Salle will be accepting applications from qualified candidates beginning Monday, Nov. 5 and will close its application process Friday, Nov. 30.

• A commitment to Catholic education • 7 years of successful high school coaching experience • The skill to organize and implement a competitive Football Program.

Pasadena Topples No. 2 Santa Paula in First-Round Upset When the playoff brackets were released a couple weeks back, there was some controversy brewing in the Pacific League.

Despite falling in their head-to-head match-up and having a worse record than cross-town rivals Muir, the Pasadena football team qualified for Division XI CIF while the Mustangs were left out in the cold.

However, the Bulldogs went on to validate their playoff berth by dropping

the bombshell of the evening and defeating No. 2 ranked Santa Paula 33-22 on the road Friday.

It was undeniably Pasadena’s best effort of the season, jumping out to a 20-3 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Pasadena’s tremendous opening quarter was powered

by Malachi Langley, who was a terror on the Cardinals defense. The senior rushed for 249 yards and scored three touchdowns.

Though it didn’t have

much success in league action, Pasadena’s triumph this playoff game could possibly serve as testament to how competitive the Pacific League was, which includes Arcadia, Burbank, Crescenta Valley and, of course, Muir.

The Bulldogs never looked back for the remainder of the game and marched on to the CIF quarterfinals. They will square off against Beaumont (7-4 overall, 2-3 Mountain Pass League) at home on Friday at 7 p.m.

Sierra Madre’s Fred Kamphues Clinches 3rd at LA Karting Championship Sierra Madre resident Fred Kamphues competed this year in the popular LO206 4-stroke category in the Los Angeles Karting Championship. With two wins and two second places, Fred Kamphues managed to secure third overall in the championship.

“I discovered this type of motorsport in April and immediately got hooked,” says Fred. LO206 is a relatively inexpensive form of karting. The engines are factory sealed and last all season without a rebuild.

A set of tires can be used for two to three races. This very much levels the playing field between amateurs and pros. Races are usually extremely close. It’s not uncommon for the first 10 drivers to finish a race within two seconds of each other and lap times are only fractions of a second apart.
