ccording to birders at the Audubon Society, there used to be approximately 330 species of migratory birds landing each winter at Los Angeles County Arboretum’s Baldwin Lake. No Injuries as Car Smashes Into Chinese Restaurant in Arcadia Engine 105, Engine 106, Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 106, and Battalion 105 responded to a vehicle into a structure call in the 600 block of East Duarte Road on Oct. 24 at 2:23 p.m.

Fire crews arrived to find a vehicle that had crashed

through a window and into a restaurant. The driver was not injured, and refused treatment and transport to a local hospital. No one inside the restaurant was injured.

The scene was released to the Arcadia Police Department.

Sierra Madre to Choose This Year’s Honorees

The Pasadena Police Department will be conducting a traffic enforcement program on Friday, Nov. 2 throughout the City of Pasadena.

Officers will be deployed at various locations throughout the city to look for violations including, but not limited to, primary collision factors involving speed or red signals. When violations are observed, violators will be cited and/or educated on the safety concerns associated with the violation. The need for driver education and enforcement is constantly on the rise due to the increase volume of traffic within the City of Pasadena.

The Pasadena Police Department's ultimate goal is to enforce and educate the driving public and at the same time reducing serious injuries and fatal collisions.

Funding for these programs is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The city asks the public to send in nominations This year marks the 2nd Annual City of Sierra Madre and Sierra Madre Chamber of Commerce joint event honoring those organizations and individuals that work tirelessly to make Sierra Madre a wonderful place to live, work and play.

In the past there have been two separate events - Sierra Madre Honors at Alverno and The Citizen of The Year Dinner. Last year the events were merged into one very special evening.

The event will be held in the Sierra Madre Room at the Recreation Center, 611 E. Sierra Madre Blvd., Sierra Madre. However, the city needs your help in choosing this year’s honorees.

Nomination Criteria - Sierra Madre Citizen of the Year for residents who have benefited the city during 2018 as a volunteer.

You can cast your vote from 7 a.m. – 8 p.m. at your local polling place.

If you find yourself in line when the polls close stay in line; allowing everyone in line when the polls close to vote is the law. If you have selected to vote-by-mail remember that ballots must be postmarked on or before Election Day and received by your county elections office no later than three days after Election Day. One last reminder, thanks to the 24th Amendment your right to vote cannot be impeded by any type of poll tax.

‘Ride to Vote’ in Pasadena The Department of Transportation announced that both Pasadena Transit and Dial-A-Ride are offering free rides on Election Day. The majority of polling places in Pasadena fall within ¼ mile of a Pasadena Transit bus stop.

Numerous other transit agencies in LA County will be joining Pasadena in offering free fare on Election Day including Foothill Transit, LA DOT, Long Beach Transit, and Antelope Valley Transit Authority to help people to get to the polls.

In the June 2018 primary election, Los Angeles County saw a voter turnout of just 28 percent, which is the second lowest of the 47 California counties that reported. Additionally, studies have shown that minority, low income, persons with disabilities and youth voters in particular have consistently lower turnout than average.

Monrovia Elections Change to Coincide With State in 2020 Beginning in March of 2020, as required by state law, Monrovia municipal elections will coincide with statewide primary election dates. General municipal elections will be held in March of even-numbered years to elect members to serve on the city council, city clerk, and city treasurer. There are five members of the Monrovia City Council, including the directly elected mayor who serves a two-year term, and four councilmembers serving a four-year term of office. The city clerk and city treasurer are also elected

and serve a four-year term. The next regular municipal election will be held on March 10, 2020, for the positions of mayor and councilmembers.

Oct. 24

Oct. 21 Shortly before 3:17 p.m., an officer responded to the Santa Anita Mall, 400 S. Baldwin Ave., regarding an assault report. The victim stated he was standing in an open parking spot, saving it for a friend, when the suspect asked repeatedly for the victim to move. The victim remained in the spot when the suspect hit the victim with his vehicle. The victim declined medical attention but stated he felt pain in his shoulder and his knee. The suspect is described as a white male, approximately 60 to 70-yearsold, driving a white Toyota van.

Oct. 22 At approximately 5:19 p.m., an officer responded to Walgreens, 253 E. Foothill Blvd., regarding a stolen vehicle report. The victim stated she parked her silver Mercedes-Benz in the parking lot at 4 p.m., and when she returned at 4:45 p.m., her car was gone. No suspects were seen and no witnesses were located.

Oct. 23 Around 4:05 a.m., officer responded to Taipan Bakery, 1033 S. Baldwin Ave., regarding the activation of an audible security alarm. Officers discovered the suspect(s) pried open the rear door, ransacked the office, and fled before their arrival. No suspects were seen, no witnesses were located, and the loss is un-

At about 10:32 a.m., an officer responded to a residence in the 2300 block of Lenta Lane regarding a fraud report. The victim discovered two fraudulent withdrawals from his savings account resulting in a total loss of $6,176.38. The victim does not know how the suspect obtained his personal information or the identity of the suspect.

Oct. 25 Around 5:28 a.m., an officer responded to the 100 block of East Duarte Road regarding the activation of an Arcadia Police Department GPS tracker. The officer determined a 39-year-old male from Sylmar was in possession of the stolen bicycle and GPS tracker. A search of the suspect revealed he was in possession of a meth pipe. He was arrested.

Oct. 26 Just before 1:04 p.m., an officer responded to a residence in the 300 block of Alster Avenue regarding a burglary report. The resident was home when she heard someone attempting to enter her home by forcing open a rear window. The suspects fled when the alarm activated.

The suspects were seen fleeing in a newer, sporty white car with tinted windows.

Oct. 27

an officer responded to Neighborhood Music School, Inc., 25 S. First Ave., regarding a grand theft report. A witness reported seeing the suspect steal an employee’s personal laptop. She then exited the store and fled southbound on First Avenue on foot. The suspect is described as an Asian female in her mid-thirties, wearing glasses and a white coat.

At approximately 6:28 p.m., an officer responded to the Santa Anita Race Track, 285 W. Huntington Drive, regarding a fraud report. The victim lost his wallet and a short time later, an unknown suspect used his credit card to purchase gas in El Monte.

MONROVIA Oct. 18 At 4:51 p.m., Special Enforcement Team officers went to a residence in the 1600 block of South Myrtle to search for a person wanted in connection with a crime.

When the suspect saw the officers, he ran from them.

Officers ran after the suspect and were able to take him into custody.

Oct. 19 At 9:23 a.m., a resident in the 1400 block of South California walked outside his home to go to work and discovered someone had taken his motorcycle sometime during the night. He had parked it in his driveway the night before.

At 10:29 a.m., an officer was patrolling the 1600 block of South Mountain when he saw two subjects walking together whom he recognized from a previous domestic violence incident. A computer check revealed one of the subjects was ordered by a judge to stay away from the other subject; this person was stopped and taken into custody.

Oct. 21 At 6:03 p.m., a resident in the 1800 block of Eighth parked his car on the street and went into his home. A few minutes later, he walked outside and saw someone rummaging through his vehicle.

As he approached his car, the suspect saw him and fled the area in another vehicle.

Oct. 22 At 2:33 a.m., a female subject was walking to her car in a business parking lot in the 400 block of West Huntington when she noticed a male subject following her to her car. She immediately called the police. Officers responded and detained the male subject. The subject was found to be under the influence of methamphetamine.

He was arrested.

At 5:36 p.m., a resident in the 200 block of West Cherry walked outside her home and discovered someone had scratched the entire length of her vehicle with a sharp object.

Shortly after 3:13 p.m.,

At 11:24 a.m., a caller reported that six days earlier he and a friend were walking in the 1800 block of South Fifth through a construction zone. They didn’t realize they were walking on freshly poured concrete. One of the construction workers began yelling at them to get off the concrete, and then swung a hammer at them.

At 10:55 p.m., a hit and run traffic collision was reported at a business in the 700 block of West Huntington. A motorist collided into the front doors of the business and drove away. There was minor damage to the front doors.

Oct. 24 At 11:10 a.m., security for a store in the 500 block of West Huntington reported a male subject had left the store without paying for merchandise. Officers responded and contacted the subject. The merchandise was returned and he was taken into custody.

At 2:14 p.m., several callers from the 300 block South Myrtle reported a male subject in Library Park that was yelling and causing a disturbance. Officers responded and contacted the subject. A computer check revealed he had a warrant for his arrest.

SIERRA MADRE Oct. 23

call in the 100 block of Santa Anita Court at about midnight of a disturbance by a male and female heard yelling at each.

Following an interview of both subjects, officers determined there was no violation.

Oct. 24 Sometime between 2:45 p.m. and 4 p.m., an unknown suspect(s) stole a Trek bicycle from the victim’s driveway in the 100 block of South Hermosa. The total loss value was approximately $800.

Oct. 25 At about 9:12 a.m. officers were dispatched to a call for service of a male individual trespassing on school property. The subject was located in a vehicle parked next to the school that was occupied by two other female occupants.

After conducting an investigation, drug paraphernalia was located inside the vehicle. The male and one female were arrested.

Oct. 27 Officers conducted a traffic stop at about 9:42 p.m. in the 100 block of West Grandview Avenue for a vehicle code violation. Upon further investigation, it was determined that the driver of the vehicle was driving while under the influence of alcohol. The driver was arrested and transported to a local hospital for medical clearance where he was later cited and released to on-duty medical staff. Case referred to DA’s office.

According to MerriamWebster the term bigwig, as we know and define it today, was first used in 1703. Bigwig has its origin in Europe where wearing wigs, especially by men, became an aristocratic trend in the 17th century.

The large and elaborate wigs became a symbol of status and importance. The wigs eventually became smaller, but by then the term was already established in the lexicon.

Today’s bigwigs don’t wear wigs, or at least won’t admit to it, but they still hold power.

The second annual Female Filmmakers Fuse Film Festival will take place for two consecutive days, starting Nov. 1. Pasadena California has played host for the film festival that celebrates women in film from both in front of the camera and behind the camera. Last year’s film festival ran only one full day of screenings ending with a red-carpet award ceremony.

Due to the success of last year’s film festival, the organization garnered more films and expanded the festival to run two days with an exclusive panel that is not to be missed.

The problem is “acute” according to Pasadena Audubon Society President Laura Garrett.

“We’ve seen a huge reduction of birds at the lake and elsewhere. The Audubon Society is in full support of Baldwin Lake restoration.

We’ve seen a drastic decline in winter visitors at Baldwin Lake in the past decade primarily due to the algae and just not enough oxygen. The quality of the water is just not sufficient,” Garrett told Arcadia Weekly on Thursday.

We spoke with renowned Biologist Michael Long on Thursday. Long says he supports Proposition 3, especially if it will assist in the preparation of the lake’s rebirth. “There’s a 50 percent drop in the water level now (at Baldwin Lake) and there’s low algae in winter and lots of sediment. The silt and organic matter has contributed to the shallow levels we see today,” Long said.

On Saturday, the Arcadia Police Foundation celebrated the holiday in style while raising funds to support the Foundation. The Embassy Suites hotel was decked out with ghouls and goblins and a frightful number of strange quests and police

officers alike.

Mary Hanson, AKA the wildest witch of Arcadia, was putting people under her spell throughout the evening while Arcadia Police Department Chief Robert Guthrie held court with guests at his table.

The event included cocktails, a 5150 jail where

you could randomly select someone to be arrested for charity, a masquerade contest, as well as a live auction that included a trip in a police helicopter and hour at the shooting range.

The evening’s proceeds benefit the Arcadia Police Foundation.

T

he middle school musical was ‘Alice in Wonderland.’ As the students were getting ready for rehearsals, Micol Issa, 6th grade English and Drama teacher at Charles W. Eliot Arts Magnet Academy (Eliot) in Pasadena, who’s also directing the production, had a sudden inspiration, “Instead of shopping for costumes for the show, why don’t we make them ourselves?”

Never mind that it was January and the production was slated for May. Indeed, many would have found that prospect daunting. Where did they find designers? Who, besides Issa, even knew how to sew?

But Eliot is Pasadena’s top Arts School and it had a reputation to uphold. So everyone got behind her idea quickly.

Students, parents, teachers, and administrators sprang to action to make Issa’s brainstorm a reality.

“Everything we do here is connected to the Arts,” Issa explains. “We’re trying to rebuild the school culture and

create spaces for kids to have multiple avenues of access to the Arts. Not everyone wants to act, but this is another way for kids to participate in the making of performances.

We realized that something we needed, not just for the drama and choir program but also for dance classes, was a costume shop. That was the goal we tried to work towards last year, which launched us into this next level. Now, we have six sewing machines, two sergers, and an embroidery machine. We basically have a sewing club that meets every Friday after school.”

Eliot’s spring musical proved to be a smashing success. Raves Issa, “Our ticket sales for the show was tremendous. We sold over $1,000, which was more than what our previous shows generated. Then, on October 10, we held our first official gallery opening featuring the costumes from last school year's spring musical ‘Alice in Wonderland Jr.’ The costumes in our production are unlike any other version of the show you have seen because it was inspired by the artist Marc Chagall and the Bauhaus

design movement.”

“We’ve had previous exhibits but they were open after school mainly for parents and students,” clarifies Issa.

“This was our first gallery opening held on a specific night for the entire community, complete with a bake and beverage sale. It demonstrates the amazing work that can be done when students, teachers, parents, and community partners collaborate.

“It was truly a project that involved a great many students – 140 kids took part in our costume shop, out of our total student population of 545. That’s 23% of the student body. What’s more, this endeavor inspired others so we have doubled our numbers in the costume shop.”

Issa is now just entering her third year at Eliot but, already, she has been instrumental in giving it the distinction of being the only middle school with a costume shop.

But, more importantly, she has successfully incorporated in its program an invaluable skill that would serve middle school students long after they leave Eliot. Nay, for life.

or many of us West Coasters, exposure to Cuban cuisine is limited at best.

Particularly in the San Gabriel Valley, only a handful of restaurants and cafes are serving up old school arroz con pollo, leaving plenty of Cubans and Cuban-food fans strapped for options —something The Lost Cuban Kitchen is looking to change.

“The name ‘The Lost Cuban Kitchen’ stems from the original founder’s (Chef Jess Streit) ‘lost’ feeling as he moved from his Miami roots. He sought a place where he could experience the love, warmth, authenticity and sense of community his Cuban family and network brought him,” says Kirby Ryan, COO of SWS Venture Capital and part of The Lost Cuban Kitchen’s leadership team. “Drawing from the recipes of Streit’s abuela [grandmother] who braved the boat ride from

one we’re excited about, and consolidation among the delivery providers will make it easier for both restaurants and customers to navigate the myriad of options.”

Although it may disappoint some not to be able to relax in the kitchen for their meal, it helps that the food is actually great. This is the kind of stuff you order when you’re craving something comforting and flavorful: Cubanos crammed with roast pork and ham, flaky empanadas and tender ropa vieja (braised prime beef ). And yes, while the enduring wound to vegetarians is that all they ever get is sides, with options like hearty black beans, sweet-savory platanos and queso pastelitos there’s no way you’re leaving hungry.

“Pasadena has been receptive, with a lot of foodies and hardcore Cuban cuisine fans thrilled to finally have an option to access their favorite food,” says Ryan. “When the founder, Jess, first visited Pasadena with the thought of launching in mind, he

Here, folks can drop by to pick up their order or use online delivery services like Uber Eats, Grubhub, Postmates, etc. to bring it right to their doorstep.

“Our target audience is 18-35 year-olds, techsavvy individuals and young families—essentially all those who have a busy schedule but still want a high-quality meal to enjoy with friends and family,” says Ryan. “The huge shift towards delivery and mobile food is clearly

Monrovia Captures First Playoff Win in Over 14 Years

Arcadia football wins Pacific League and will take on Agoura in the first round

It’s certainly been a long time coming but the Monrovia boys’ water polo team ended a severe 14-year playoff drought, as it took down The Webb Schools 11-9 in the first round of CIF on Tuesday.

“It feels great, but I’m always looking for the next game,” said Monrovia Head Coach Kris Williams of his team’s marquee victory. “The win today was phenomenal and I’m proud of my guys, but now we’re starting fresh the next game.

I need them to focus and I need myself to focus so we don’t go into the next game overly confident.”

The path to get to this point was a bumpy one as the Wildcats put together a decent 13-12 overall record but only went 1-7 in the highly competitive Rio Hondo League. Fortunately for the Wildcats, their efforts

were enough to earn them a berth in the CIF Division V playoffs with a match-up against The Webb Schools from the Hacienda League.

In the early goings, Monrovia dictated the tempo very well by moving the ball to open up a commanding lead in the first half.

However, the Wildcats began to let up in the third quarter, which allowed the Gauls to claw their way back into the game and take the lead.

Both sides wound up going back and forth the majority of the fourth quarter until Monrovia managed to seize control for good. In the final two minutes, the Wildcats opened up an 11-9 lead, which was all it needed to stave off Webb’s furious rally and advance to the next round.

Monrovia will hit the road to play Beaumont in the second round of CIF playoffs on Thursday at 5 p.m.

Arcadia Claims League Title With Statement Win Over Crescenta Valley

W

hen two of the Pacific League’s top teams – and bitterest of rivals – met last Friday with at least a share of the league title on the line, one would expect the game to be a dramatic battle of epic proportions.

However, this affair between Arcadia and Crescenta Valley proved to be a lopsided one as the Apaches were crowned the outright league champs with a 43-10 demolition over the Falcons.

Going into each team’s last regular season game, the Apaches held a slight advantage as they were undefeated at 6-0 and would’ve won at least a share of the league title even with a loss. On the other hand, the Flacons’ 5-1 record had them right on Arcadia’s tail and tied with Burbank for second place.

Despite the Apaches’ offensive flurry, it was their defense, led by DB Demarco Moorer, who showed why defense really does win

championships. Along with two rushing touchdowns, Moorer’s big interception in the third quarter was the icing on the cake in the Apaches’ big victory over the Crescenta Valley.

Now with a league title under its belt, Division VIII No. 5 ranked Arcadia will head into the playoffs with loads of confidence on its side. The Apaches’ opponent in the first round will be Agoura, who finished third in the Canyon League with a 1-2 record.

PBS Foster Care Documentary to Feature Pasadena Athlete Jaloni West In commemoration of National Adoption Awareness Month, PBS SoCal will screen “Finding Home: A Foster Youth Story,” a documentary following the trials and tribulations of Los Angeles’ foster care youth, including former Pasadena track star Jaloni West.

The documentary – which was in the works for a year – focuses on four young adults, including 19-yearold West, his twin brother Kalonji West, Summer, a 17-year-old transgender girl, and Glorianna, a 20-yearlold graphic novelist, writer and YouTuber.

“My biggest goal with this documentary was to humanize and to put a face on foster youth,” Tom said.

“What most people know about foster youth is mostly

statistics or what they hear in the press … So I wanted to just humanize them and say, ‘These aren’t just statistics.

These are real people who have real feelings, who have goals, who have fears, who have successes and get to know them because they are really no different than the rest of us.’”

Jaloni, in particular, had a rough childhood as his parents had trouble supporting him and his six brothers and sisters. There were many instances when the family was left without any food, water, electricity and many other basic needs.

At age 12, Jaloni and Kalonji were placed in foster care and after bouncing around several group homes, the two finally found a foster family in Pasadena that

provided them the support and structure they’d longed for their entire lives.

Under the guidance of their new foster parents, Jaloni and brother Kalonji excelled academically and athletically. Earlier this year, Jaloni was recruited to Cal State Northridge on a track and field scholarship while Kalonji chose to continue his education at Cal State Los Angeles as he looks to major in criminal justice.

Tom’s “Finding Home: A Foster Youth Story” documentary will premiere on PBS SoCal on Thursday Nov. 1 at 8 p.m.
