I

t couldn’t happen at a better time of the year, this close to Thanksgiving. What’s happening, you say?

Well, the famous Van De Camp windmill atop of what is now Denny’s in Arcadia will be up and running again thanks to the tireless efforts of one man in particular, George Fasching who spearheaded the initial campaign two years ago to get the windmill turning again after decades of

non-operation.

After exhaustive efforts and an elaborate event to officially turn on the windmill after so many years of non-operation, Fasching and Denny’s CEO John Miller celebrated the occasion with city officials and the community last June.

Within a mere few months, the blades came tumbling down one morning in a freak accident possibly caused by metal fatigue in one of the mechanical components holding the blades. One of the blades sliced a hole through the roof of the iconic building. No one was hurt, amazingly enough, but it was a sad day for those involved in getting the historic

Fasching is quick to point out that the real heroes here are Denny’s CEO Miller; Ed Meda, the project manager; the city of Arcadia and of course the brilliant fabrication and creative design work of Joe Sargis and his company in Arcadia.

Suspect From Fatal Hit And Run Collision in Pasadena Arrested The suspected driver and vehicle believed to have been involved in Sunday’s hit-and-run incident was located at a residence in the 800 block of N. Oakland Avenue in Pasadena, according to the Pasadena Police Department.

Francisco Javier Soto Cedillo, a 24 year-old Pasadena resident, was arrested without incident. Cedillo was booked in the Pasadena City Jail for vehicular manslaughter, felony hit and run, and an outstanding warrant for driving under the influence of an alcoholic beverage. He is being held on $85,000 bail.

On Sunday, Oct. 21 at about 7:20 p.m., Police and Fire Department personnel responded to the 1100 block of North Fair

Oaks Avenue regarding a report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle. Upon arrival, 27 year-old Jessica Rivas Torres was found unresponsive suffering from major injuries.

Fire Department personnel were unable to revive Torres and she was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The Police Department’s investigation is continuing. Arcadia PD Safety & Security Expo 2018 Over 400 people showed up to a successful Safety & Security Expo at the Arcadia Masonic Lodge last week. In addition to all those attendees, 27 vendors were on-hand at the event.

At this one-day Safety & Security Expo, dozens of local security vendors showcased their latest products, services, and technological advance-

ments.

In an effort to assist Arcadians searching for ways to make their homes safer, the City of Arcadia now has an alarm registration subsidy program. The city will pay the cost of your security system registration fee (valued at $40), whether you’re registering your alarm for the first time or renewing.

Cancer survivors, volunteers, and community members will unite to honor the lifelong contributions of canine caregivers at the annual American Cancer Society Bark for Life event on Oct. 28 from 9 a.m. to noon at Monrovia’s Library Park, located at 321 S. Myrtle Ave. Funds raised help the American Cancer Society attack cancer in dozens of ways, each of them critical to achieving a world without cancer – from developing breakthrough therapies to building supportive communities.

Bark for Life will begin with registration at 8:30 a.m. and followed by the opening ceremony at 9. The Bark for Life Disc Dogs will begin promptly at 10 a.m. followed by “Howl-o-ween’ costume contest at 11. The event will end with a closing ceremony, raffle and the announcement of the auction prize winner at noon.

he San Gabriel Valley Air Fair is scheduled for Oct. 27-28. The Air Fare celebrates flight in the San Gabriel Valley annually and offers rides to patrons. This year is geared toward family entertainment, according to organizer Gabe Lopez.

Mission Flight, a volun-

teer organization of pilots, will be taking children with special needs on private flights in small aircraft with all expenses covered. For everyone else interested in flights, a nominal fee will allow members of the public to be a passenger on the aircraft. Lopez calls it “an inspirational flight for life.”

Lopez wants to spread the word that the world needs pilots now more than ever.

ark your calendars for Saturday, Oct. 27 from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. for the first annual Downtown Arcadia Halloween Harvest Festival.

Happening on First Avenue between Huntington and California, the street will be transformed into the scariest most “costumiest” harvest festival around. There will be trick-or-treating. There will be Halloween costume events. There will be live music and entertainment.

There will be artisanal craft vendors. There will be beer and wine from Vendome Wine & Spirits and Mt. Lowe Brewing Co. There will be over a dozen food vendors and trucks. There will be fabulous raffle prizes, giant bubbles, free face painting,

appearance there will be Santa Claus himself telling scary Halloween stories.

The event kicks off at 11 a.m. with food, craft vendors, and booth exhibitors open for business and First Avenue Middle School Rock Band on stage. At 11:40 a.m., Balloon Time with Mr. Fun will take the stage to demonstrate how to make fun balloon animals, followed by the Verdugo Hills Chorus performing at noon, and then Halloween Stories with Santa begins at 12:40 p.m. From 1-2 p.m. musicians from the Arcadia Neighborhood Music School perform on stage to be followed by a stage show from the upcoming Moonlight Forest Magical Lantern Festival at the Los Angeles County Arboretum, and then a magic show with magician Stephen Wood starting at

Arcadia Firefighters Train for High Angle Rescue The Arcadia Fire Department conducted a total of 441 hours of training last week. Some of the subjects covered were: hose evolutions, ladder evolutions, ventilation techniques, salvage and overhaul techniques, tiller certification, defensive driving, engine company equipment, search and rescue, communications, EOC operations, records management, fire suppression tactics, power tools, hand tools, truck operations, emergency

medical technician, paramedic continuing education, hazardous materials, lighting operations, rope rescue, incident command, pre-incident planning, supervision and management, and standard operating guideline review.

Arcadia firefighters trained on a simulated high angle rescue. This type of rescue is used for victims who are trapped down a high angle location such as over a cliff or a building.

ARCADIA Oct. 14 Shortly before 2:42 a.m. an officer responded to the intersection of Santa Anita Avenue and Duarte Road regarding the activation of an Arcadia Police Department GPS tracker. An investigation revealed two suspects had the stolen bait package in their vehicle. A 32-year-old male from Baldwin Park and a 33¬-yearold female from Baldwin Park were arrested.

Oct. 15 Just after 1:21 p.m. officers responded to a residence in the 2400 block of South Sixth Avenue regarding a residential burglary report. The victim witnessed two suspects in his backyard attempting to enter his home. The suspects were scared off and fled on foot.

They are described as black males, 18 to 21-years-old, approximately 5-foot-10 to 6 feet tall, thin builds, and both were seen wearing hooded sweatshirts.

Oct. 18 Around 10:07 a.m. an officer responded to the 00 block of East Huntington Drive regarding a drunkenness report. The officer located the 23-year-old male from Arcadia and discovered he was under the influence of an alcoholic beverage and unable to care for himself. He was arrested.

Oct. 19 At about 10:55 a.m. an officer responded to a residence in the 1100 block of Fallen Leaf Road regarding a battery report. An investigation revealed an altercation ensued between two brothers resulting in one brother pushing and grabbing the other.

The suspect, a 51-¬year-old male from Arcadia, was arrested.

Oct. 16 Oct. 20 Just before 7:17 p.m., an officer responded to Matt Denny’s Alehouse, 145 E. Huntington Drive, regarding a commercial burglary report.

The officer determined an unknown suspect forced open the rear patio gate and stole an electric scooter. The investigation is ongoing.

Oct. 17 Shortly after 11:10 a.m. an officer responded to a resi-

Shortly after 8 a.m. officers responded to the 300 block of West Duarte Road regarding the activation of an Arcadia Police Department GPS tracker. The suspect was located nearby and was in possession of the stolen package and contents. The 60-year-old male from Sherman Oaks was arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking.

MONROVIA Oct. 11 At 10:50 a.m. a resident in the 200 block of West Palm reported hearing a loud banging noise and a female subject yelling in the apartment next to her. Officers responded and located the female subject.

Her ex-boyfriend had been hitting his fist on her front door, attempting to speak with her. He was taken into custody after it was discovered he was in violation of a restraining order.

At 7:07 p.m. a resident in the 300 block of Wildrose walked outside his home to go to work and discovered someone had stolen tools from the back of his work truck sometime during the night. The tools were not locked to the truck. This investigation is continuing.

Oct. 14 At 2:36 a.m. a transportation driver reported he was parked in the 2100 block of South Myrtle with a customer in his vehicle who was heavily intoxicated. An officer responded and found the subject was too intoxicated to care for his own safety, so he was arrested and taken into custody.

At 11:59 a.m. a caller reported two motorists had just collided into one another in the 700 block of West Huntington. Officers responded to investigate. The party at fault was issued a citation.

At 2:52 p.m. a caller reported a suspicious male subject in the 400 block of West Foothill, riding a bicycle and dragging a Lime rental bike alongside of him. Officers located and stopped the subject.

The rental bike had its locking and GPS tracking device removed. The subject was found to be in possession of burglary tools and a pipe that had been used to smoke methamphetamine. A computer check revealed he was on parole. The subject was arrested.

Oct. 15 Oct. 12 At 8:38 a.m. residents from the 200 block of Ivy, 700 block of Wildrose, 100 block of North Sunset, and the 100 block of North Myrtle walked outside their homes to go to work and discovered someone had stolen their car batteries sometime during the night.

This investigation is continuing.

At 8:29 p.m. security for a store in the 500 block of West Huntington reported they were detaining a female subject inside their store for shoplifting. Officers arrived, and after an investigation was conducted, the subject was taken into custody. The stolen

When officers arrived, they found that one of the motorists had driven away without exchanging information, as required by law. The other driver was transported to a nearby hospital due to a complaint of pain. This investigation is continuing.

Oct. 16 At 3:10 a.m. an officer was patrolling the 300 block of Wildrose when he saw a motorist commit several traffic violations. The motorist was

At 9:14 p.m. a caller reported a male subject in the 100 block of West Foothill causing a disturbance. Officers responded and contacted the subject, who was found to be heavily intoxicated and unable to care for his own safety, so he was arrested and taken into custody.

SIERRA MADRE Oct. 16 At about 1:18 a.m. officers observed an idling parked vehicle in a private parking lot with a male and female occupant.

After conducting an investigation, methamphetamine and a glass pipe were located inside the vehicle. The male occupant was arrested for possession of a controlled substance and for drug paraphernalia then transported to the Pasadena Jail for booking. The female occupant was released at the location. .

At 11:21 a.m. an unattended back-pack leaf blower was taken from a location at Kersting Court. Two male suspects were seen fleeing the scene in a dark colored, early model pickup truck.

Oct. 19 Officers were dispatched at 6:11 p.m. to the 1900 block of Oakwood Avenue regarding a domestic dispute between a male and a female. After a want/warrant check, dispatch informed officers that the female half had two outstanding warrants. The female was arrested and transported to the Pasadena Jail.

Oct. 21

Oct. 17 At 8:20 a.m. an employee of a business in the 700 block of East Huntington reported someone had opened four Verizon accounts using the company’s tax ID. The company has received charges for the fraudulently opened accounts.

This investigation is continuing.

Officers responded to the 600 block Mt. Wilson Trail at about 8:48 a.m. regarding a possible battery that had just occurred involving a neighbor. All involved parties and witnesses were contacted and statements were obtained.

There was insufficient evidence for an arrest. A report was taken.

hat does Oct. 31 through Nov. 2 mean to you? Is it just another day at the office?

Do you perhaps change your day to day routine and turn off all the lights in your house in an attempt to avoid trick-or-treaters at your door? Or are you part of the millions of people taking part in the long lasting traditions of Halloween and Day of the Dead?

These calendar days have grown in popularity over the years becoming unofficial holidays. Even if these few days don’t have any special meaning to you, the atmosphere these holidays create are eerie enough to make you look over your shoulder or maybe even have you running for your dear life.

The first day to kick off the spine-chilling festivities is Oct. 31, also known as Halloween or, if you are as old as cobwebs, Hallows Eve. Personally the best part of Halloween is admiring people’s sense of creativity when it comes to making an original costume and creating Halloween decor for their home and/or office space. Halloween may be

the night you finally get to meet your quiet neighbor or get to know your community if you’re old enough to be a trick-or-treater. Either way Halloween night is not your normal evening and is fun to go out at night and join in on the fun if you have the guts.

Nov. 1 and 2, also known as Day of The Dead (Dia De Los Muertos), have grown in popularity here in the United States. The tradition of celebrating the dead on these days was born in Mexico. The idea behind these days is to celebrate the memories

of all our loved ones who have passed on. Traditions of this holiday consist of building an altar honoring your ancestors. Dia De Los Muertos is a beautiful tradition that dedicates a couple of days with festivities all in honor of passed loved ones.

People dress up as lively cadavers for it is believed that by honoring the dead the spirits of ancestors will live on.

There will be plenty of spooky celebrations adequate for all ages happening throughout communities. In Arcadia on Oct. 27 there will be a

‘Spooky Creatures in The Garden’ event in the LA Arboretum with activities ideal or children 10 years of age or younger. On Wednesday, Oct. 31 from 3 to 6 p.m. in the City of Monrovia there will be a Trick-orTreat and Halloween Bash.

There will be a costume contest and dog costume contest. In Old Pasadena on Friday, Nov. 2 there will be a special Dia De Los Muertos and tour of Altars event.

The Tour of the Altars will include three community altars that will allow the public to leave a keepsake of their own honoring a passed loved one. So, if Oct. 31 through Nov. 2 are normal days in the office for you please keep in mind that for

millions it is not, and you may want to be prepared to have the living daylights scared right out of you.

Arcadia Schools Honor Red Ribbon Week Observance runs through Oct. 31 Red Ribbon Week began in remembrance of Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Agent Enrique Camarena who was kidnapped and murdered in Mexico in 1985. Agent Camarena had been working undercover for the DEA and was key in developing information that led to the eradication of large-scale narcotics manufacturing operations in Mexico. Mexican cartel leaders sought revenge for these operations, murdering alleged informants and

ultimately, Agent Camarena.

Following his death, in Agent Camarena's hometown, Calexico, Calif., the public outpouring of support turned in to an organized community response in which citizens dawned red ribbons.

They became a voice for prevention in order to reduce the demand for illegal drugs and the use of drugs in America. The following year the California State PTA adopted the Red Ribbon Campaign. Then, in 1988 Red Ribbon Week was

recognized nationally with President Ronald Reagan and First Lady Nancy Reagan serving as the Honorary Chairs.

Today, the Red Ribbon Celebration brings millions of people together to raise awareness regarding the need for alcohol, tobacco and other drug and violence prevention, early intervention, and treatment services. It is the largest, most visible prevention awareness campaign observed annually in the United States.

Sargis said the structural analysis and the fabrication has taken about a month to complete and the other two blades are almost finished.

Fasching pointed out that Denny’s CEO financed the restoration (again) and no public funds were used on this project. According Arcadia’s city manager, Arcadia waived all the necessary permit fees etc. to help move the project along.

“Yes, we decided to waive the permit fees in order to encourage Denny’s to restore the windmill (valued

at approximately $3,500).

The Denny’s windmill is an iconic structure in Arcadia.

We are happy to partner with Denny’s to ensure that the windmill once again becomes a dramatic entry marker into our historic Downtown.

We look forward to seeing those blades spinning for the next 60 years,” said Arcadia City Manager Dominic Lazzaretto.

n an article which published last April in Time magazine, Katie Reilly reported that record numbers of college students are seeking treatment for anxiety and depression. She further described that when UCLA offered, for the first time, all incoming students a free online screening for depression, more than 2,700 students opted in.

However, anxiety and depression often predate college. High school students, most especially in the San Gabriel Valley, are faced with daunting competition when they start applying to colleges.

They are over-scheduled, sleep-deprived, and hell-bent to stand out among other over-achievers. It’s no wonder, then, that they are riddled with anxiety that often leads to depression.

Building the groundwork for sending happy and healthy kids to college is a mandate that John Finch, headmaster of Chandler School, takes to heart.

Finch declares. “We pay careful attention to the volume of work we ask the students to do.

We don’t try to fit round pegs into square holes – we provide a program that meets their needs and adjust our program so that each child feels recognized, respected, and challenged.

“As we challenge our students, requiring them to do good work, we are equally careful about how we manage expectations. We have to be mindful that doing otherwise leads us to the same path we’ve been going on, with more kids falling out in the end.”

“Socially, we want to create an environment where children are kind to each other, respect and help each other,” states Finch. “At the same time, we want to establish an atmosphere where kids can be resilient and gritty. We want for them to pursue their interests by trial and error. And if they fail, we’ll help them try again.

We want them to feel that there’s a balanced foundation of care and love.”

Finch points out, “I think students who spend too much time on screens and not enough time interacting with others can become isolated and lonely. We have to be

cautious, conscientious, and deliberate in urging our kids to shut their screens down, to spend more time interacting and socializing with friends and family.”

“Increasingly, I hear principals say their biggest concern is not so much the achievement, but the well-being of their students. Something’s changing and we have to find the cause and respond accordingly. Ten years ago schools were adding technology and computer positions.

Now schools are augmenting learning and emotional support.

“In a small private school with an adult-student ratio of 1 to 7, it’s very hard for the child to slip through the cracks,” assures Finch. “We’re capable of arresting something before it becomes too dark.”

It’s heartening to know that parents, teachers, and school administrators, are acknowledging that there is a mental health problem affecting a large number of students.

That schools are also now taking active measures to help students get through their anxiety and depression is certainly a lifeline for those who’ve been feeling alone and despondent. There is hope yet.

aRTS & eNTERTAINMENT Studio Visit - Aneesa Shami

T

his month I visited the art studio of Aneesa Shami (aneesashami. com, etsy.com/shop/ AShami, facebook.com/ aneesashamistudio, @ aneesashami on Instagram), a fiber artist at the Hawthorne Arts Complex; a massive art studio facility located near SpaceX and Tesla off the 105 Freeway and Crenshaw Boulevard. Aneesa grew up in Overland Park, Kan. (a suburb near Kansas City), and like many artists became interested in art during her high school years. She attended the Kansas City Art Institute

and majored in fiber after exposure to a number of different mediums during her first year. She chose fiber because the curriculum offered instruction in multiple techniques (weaving, dyeing fabric, screen printing, knitting, basketry, etc.) and coursework in construction, craft, and design. As opposed to painting, she felt fiber was much more tactile and physical in terms of construction. After finishing her undergraduate degree, Aneesa relocated to California in order to continue building her practice.

According to Aneesa the

great thing about fiber is that “once you have your loom, materials and space you’re in business.” At this stage in her career, she is exploring multiple product lines to gain experience, practice her craft and see “what sticks” or sells.

Currently she is producing a line of stunning hand-woven scarves available in a range of unique patterns, colors and materials (wool, silk, cotton and synthetics). She has also been spending a great deal of time on wall hangings; these giant 5-by-6-foot weavings can take days or even weeks to complete given the thousands of hand tied knots involved.

I suggested outsourcing to Thailand, but apparently that defeats the purpose of working with your hands directly.

It was the first time in Chanteurs show choir history [that they] performed with a professional orchestra and a full-scale classical piece - in Latin.

Due to heavy rain and power outages throughout Monrovia, the Old Town Fall Festival will be rescheduled to Saturday Oct. 27 from 12 - 6 p.m.

Keys Music Academy operates on a simple premise: it’s never too early (or late) to bring music into your life.

“Music should be available to everybody. Our youngest student is three and a half and extremely mature for her age—she can recite the 50 states!” says Annie Chen, owner and founder of 88 Keys Music Academy in Arcadia. A USC-trained classical pianist with decades of study under her belt, Chen has also learned to coax musicality out of her older students, too.

“My oldest student is 76 and started learning from scratch nearly five years ago,” she says. “My personal philosophy is that learning music is not one-size-fitsall, you know? Every student is different, and you have to find unique ways to relate to

After years of teaching as a professional musician, Chen officially launched 88 Keys Music Academy five years ago with just a few teaching studios and a handful of students. Expanding her studio space and rotation of instructors, the music school now offers lessons in piano, violin, drums, flute, guitar, voice and more. 88 Keys will even be opening up a

new location in San Gabriel, bringing music to a broader audience.

“We’re planning on opening early January 2019 at the latest,” says Chen. “We’ll still offer all of the same lessons, so no one will miss out.”

Chen makes sure her students’ don’t miss out on finding their own style, too.

Whether it’s group classes to explore what instruments

speak to them or more intensive private lessons, the instructors at 88 Keys make it a point to blend music theory with personal preference.

“We don’t just teach them to play—we teach our students technique, talk about the composers, teach them to really read music,” says Chen. “But classical can get a little boring, so to keep it interesting students can also bring in their own sheet music for songs that move them. Like if there’s an Ed Sheeran or Taylor Swift song they love, we’ll find a simplified version.”

Cruising the Western Caribbean Aboard Holland America

he Mayans lived in the area of Costa Maya between 200 B.C. and 900 A.D. During this period they traded goods, such as fabrics and jade, and built historic cities along the Mexican coast. Today the ruins of this fascinating ancient civilization remain scattered about the beautiful, ocean-front town.

Earlier this year, while cruising through the Western Caribbean, I got a chance to experience Costa Maya and see some of the ancient remains. The visit was the last port-of-call on a seven-day Holland America Cruise aboard the majestic Rotterdam ship.

Before getting to Costa Maya, the cruise stopped in Mahogany Bay, Roatan, Honduras. Roatan, about 40 miles off the coast of Honduras, is situated atop an ancient, exposed coral reef. As the Central American country’s largest island, it is also located near the second-largest barrier reef in the world, the Mesoamerican Reef.

Roatan’s unique and fragile ecosystem is a must see for nature-lovers who want to see amazing Honduran flora and fauna, as well as butterflies, hummingbirds and monkeys. And for beach aficionados, there is beautiful Mahogany Bay, which boasts 900 feet of white sand beach accessible via chairlift.

While in Roatan, I took a semi-submersible boat ride and explored West End Village. To get to the

boat we drove about 30 minutes to a beautiful bay where we climbed aboard and grabbed a seat in an underwater observatory that showcased gorgeous coral formations, living reef, and colorful tropical fish. At West End village, we watched Garifuna Dancers perform their culturally important dance called the Punta. The Garifuna culture dates back to the early 1600s. We also shopped and had an authentic cup of Honduran

Before dropping anchor in Honduras we visited Santo Tomas De Castilla, Guatemala, a forgotten and authentic slice of Central America. A former Belgian colony (Belgium occupied Guatemala from the 1840s to 1854), the port now welcomes visitors seeking soft adventure. Activities include hikes to waterfalls, explorations of the surrounding rain forest, tropical bird–watching and treks around ancient Maya

cities, some of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Santo Tomas De Castilla also features colonial buildings including a 16th-century Spanish fort, Castillo de San Felipe, as well as plenty of great handicrafts made by locals.

The first stop on the cruise was Key West, Fla. Here it is said the sun is brightest just before it sets into the Caribbean Sea. So each afternoon, impromptu gatherings form at

various hot spots around the island to witness the phenomenon. One of the best places for the rituals is Mallory Square, where our ship anchored.

While in Key West, I shopped, swam on the beach and explored in the footsteps of Ernest Hemingway on the southernmost island in the Florida Keys and the continental United States.

I began on Duval Street, the island’s main drag. I soon found Hemingway's old home which is now a museum. The 1851 residence still contains the writer’s original furniture and the numerous six-toed cats that roam the grounds are descendants of his original felines. A few blocks from here I found a giant, red, concrete buoy at the end of town that marks the Southernmost Point in the continental U.S. It is only 90 miles from Cuba.

ometimes, you want to feel like your work means something.

You want to feel like a person who is performing a craft. You want to feel like a professional. Somehow, looking for a job can make you feel like a discount item on a shelf at a big box store.

The salary is an area where companies have lost their way. During your first phone call with a company’s HR department, the recruiter will ask you how much money you make – or how much you want to make. Recruiters will tell you that they’re simply trying to understand whether or not you’re inside their budget.

But, this is the thing.

Companies have a wide band they can pay employees.

Asking this question is like a game of chicken, where the company is hedging their bets

to try to get a good deal. But, how much are they saving on this exercise? Is it worth the cost of upsetting a candidate?

Years ago, I shopped for a new car. I went to a typical car dealership where I was treated like prey. Then, I went to a Saturn dealership.

Saturn was a completely different experience. There was no negotiation. There was no pressure. If the car worked for you, it was yours.

If not, no problem. Despite that Saturn no longer exists, ask anyone who owned one what the experience was like,

and you’ll find out just how positive it was.

Religious folks must be surprised! For centuries they have held the belief that religion is the strongest (and perhaps the only) catalyst that inspires charity.

Well, study after study has revealed that the young are less religious than previous generations and that the number of the faithful is diminishing. In fact, many millennials are not religious at all.

Yet, there are so many ways besides religion to inspire generosity - for example, reading Emily Dickenson’s poem, “Not in Vain:” If I can stop one heart from breaking, I shall not live in vain.

If I can ease one life the aching, Or cool one pain, Or help one fainting robin Unto his nest again, I shall not live in vain.

That vision of compassion is universal, not selective.

Thus when we too wish to lessen suffering, shouldn’t we

unburden our minds of deism or secularism and all the other “isms,” and just let the light of compassion guide our hearts to make us generous in offering help to as many of our fellow creatures as we can?

Arcadia Volleyball Bounced Out of CIF Playoffs

Monrovia Wildcats Run Out of Gas in First-Round Defeat to La Habra Monrovia girls’ volleyball showed true girt and resiliency in its CIF match-up against La Habra but it just wasn’t enough as the Highlanders swept the Wildcats to put and end to their 2018 campaign.

The Wildcats recorded a season with many high and lows, going 4-4 in preseason with most of their games coming against Pacific League competition, including Burbank, Arcadia, Burroughs and Pasadena.

Monrovia was certainly the dark horse heading into Rio Hondo League

action but their efforts were to no avail as San Marino went undefeated in all 10 of its league games.

However, the Wildcats’ efforts were good enough for a third-place finish in the standing after they took six of their last seven games to close out the regular season.

This run included a solid showing at the Gabrielino Tournament and a pivotal 3-1 victory over La Cañada, a team Monrovia had already lost to earlier in the season.

The Wildcats’ 13-8 overall record and 7-3 league record garnered them a

spot for CIF with their first game coming against Freeway League co-champions La Habra on Oct. 18.

In the first set, Monrovia showed a lot of promise and kept it competitive despite losing 25-22. However, the Highlanders immediately caught fire following the first, ultimately spelling defeat for the Wildcats as they lost 25-13 in the second and 25-12 in the third.

With the loss, Monrovia was eliminated in the first round of playoffs once again as it came up short to Arcadia 3-1 last season.

The Apaches’ season came to an end on Saturday, as they couldn’t keep pace with a robust Alemany squad during their 3-1 loss in the second round of CIF playoffs.

For the most part, the Arcadia girls’ volleyball team strolled through Pacific League play, only losing once to fellow co-champions Burroughs. Aside from that, the Apaches only dropped two sets in the thirteen other matches, which were during a 3-1 win over Burroughs on Sept. 11 and a 3-1 win over Crescenta Valley on Sept. 18.

round where they were put to the test every single set.

Fortunately for Arcadia, it did just enough to keep St. Lucy’s at bay en route to its most difficult sweep of the season. The win landed them a highly anticipated second-round match-up with Sunshine League champions Alemany on Saturday.

However, this game

proved to be the end of line for the Apaches as Alemany defeated them in four sets.

This marked the second year in a row Arcadia has lost in the second round of CIF with last year happening against La Salle.

The Apaches finished the season with a 25-4 overall record and a 13-1 record in the Pacific League.

Polytechnic Panthers Can’t Stay Afloat in Season Finale Despite going 14-9 overall, the Panthers of Polytechnic boys’ water polo couldn’t make a significant splash in the Prep League as their final game of the regular season on Tuesday came in a 8-5 loss to Brentwood.

The defeat snapped Polytechnic’s four-game win streak and dropped its league record to 3-5. This streak was one victory shy of matching its longest of the season, which came in the first couple weeks, including wins over St. Francis, Mark Keppel, Glendale, El Rancho and Pasadena.

Tuesday’s contest saw the Panthers put up a relatively good fight against Brentwood, who had already clinched the Prep League crown. In the first half, Polytechnic kept it close as it only trailed Brentwood 4-3 heading into the break.

However, Brentwood went on to open a three-goal lead

in the third quarter, giving it enough cushion to comfortably close out the game over the Panthers. Polytechnic finished fifth in the Prep league standings, ahead of only last-place La Salle at 0-7.

It is still unknown if Polytechnic will qualify for the CIF playoffs but the bracket will go live Oct. 27 at 10 a.m. on the official CIF website. Last season, the Panthers owned an identical record and qualified for the playoffs where they defeated Sierra Vista in the first round but were eliminated by Nordhoff the following game.
