The Great Pyrenees Association of Southern California Rescue (GPASC Rescue) held its semi-annual Pyr-In at Arcadia County Park on Sunday. Twenty-eight Great Pyrenees, most of them alumni of the Rescue, attended the reunion along with their human companions. Canine and human friendships were renewed as owners took turns recounting the stories of their Pyr’s rescue. The event took on a picnic atmosphere with games, pizza and lots of picture-taking.

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted at the 70th session of the United Nations General Assembly in 2015, set bold goals to shift the world onto a sustainable, resilient path. Halloween Window Painting Contest in Sierra Madre Sierra Madre Civic Club is again sponsoring the annual Halloween Window Painting Contest, which is open to youth ages nine to 17. otivation, is the high we try to reach every week, often times achieving it through various types of narcotics such as quotes of the day, meditation, repeatedly giving pep talks to yourself on the drive to work, coffee, morning routines, exercise and etc. We either cycle through a set of means or religiously stick to one.

Welcome to this weeks motivational fix, where I will share an individual's means to achieving his or her motivational burst of energy.

I, like many others out there, am constantly seeking after motivation. So, why not find motivational inspiration in others who already have a means that works for them?

That is why in this ser¬ies, which will go on to cover a few more people, I plan to share exactly that. I plan to share the motivational stories of those residing in Monrovia, Arcadia, Pasadena and Sierra Madre areas, hoping it will serve to encourage and strengthen communal bonds of the people in each city.

I hope to share this by showing you - the reader more than telling you. I hope to immerse you into a part of this person’s mindset for the short duration that you are reading this.

This week I will begin with the story of how a man’s motivation is driven by his faith.

Sitting down, arms poised and propped on the arm rest of the chair, Michael Vivo’s arms expose the words “Faith is All I Have,” inscribed in a broad cursive-like font, wrapping half the circumference of his forearm.

The ink left a mark on his life. It became more than just words but a way of life.

“I live by faith. I am very spiritual so I believe something greater than myself, that way I feel humble about the littlest things and I am appreciative of the smallest gesture or anything, because the little things matter just as [much as] the big things to me,” Vivo said. “And those are the things

you learn in time, in mistakes and lessons.”

Faith is the underlying force that drives Vivo’s motivational principle. Although faith is everything to him, what keeps Vivo motivated is when he tries not to worry about the problems he cannot solve.

“I try to solve everything and when you realize you can’t, it overcomes you. And it makes you doubt yourself, so [...] you have to distance yourself from the things you can’t really solve and concentrate on the things you could [sic] and help others while you are doing that,” Vivo said.

“And don’t let mistakes define you, let them be a lesson. Let them help [you] find your purpose in your life.”

ARCADIA Sept. 16 At approximately 1:19 p.m., an officer responded to a residence in the 100 block of Alice Street regarding a family dispute. Upon contacting the residents, the officer discovered the mother, a 59-year-old female from Arcadia, chased her adult son around the house with a knife and threatened to kill him. The investigation is ongoing.

Sept. 18 Just before 7:15 p.m., officers responded to a residence in the 2600 block of South Santa Anita Avenue regarding a burglary report. Unknown suspects smashed a kitchen window, ransacked the home, and moved a large safe from inside the house into the backyard, which they attempted to open but were unsuccessful.

They fled with cash, jewelry, and a pistol safe.

Sept. 19 At about 7:06 a.m., an officer responded to a residence in the 400 block of West Woodruff Avenue regarding a package theft report. A neighbor reported seeing the suspect steal a neighbor’s package from their porch. It was discovered the suspects returned the next day and stole a package containing an Arcadia Police Department tracking device. The vehicle contained both stolen packages and their contents. A 40-year-old male from Long Beach, a 30-yearold male from Los Angeles, a 20-year-old female from Los

crime blotters Angeles, and a 21-year-old female from Los Angeles were arrested for a slew of charges including grand theft, possessing burglary tools, committing mail theft, possessing unlawful paraphernalia, and passing fictitious checks.

Sept. 20 Before 12:16 p.m., officers responded to the 400 block of South Baldwin Avenue regarding the activation of an Arcadia Police Department GPS tracker. Arcadia PD detectives had previously deployed decoy bicycles with tracking devices to combat the increase in bike thefts throughout the city. An investigation revealed a 39-yearold male from South El Monte was in possession of the stolen bicycle and GPS tracker.

The suspect was arrested.

Around 12:43 p.m., an officer responded to the 200 block of East Forest Avenue regarding a theft from vehicle report. The officer discovered unknown suspect(s) cut the victim’s catalytic converter from his Toyota Prius sometime between Sept. 17 and Sept. 20. No suspects were seen and no witnesses were located.

Sept. 21 At about 2:42 a.m., officers conducted an enforcement stop on a vehicle in the area of Norman Avenue and Holly Avenue for driving with suspended registration. During a consensual search of the vehicle, the officers located burglary tools and methamphetamine. A 33-year-old male from El Monte and a 45-year-

old male from El Monte were arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking.

Upon meeting each other, the suspect grabbed the shoe box from the victim and fled on foot toward Huntington Drive.

The suspect is described as a Hispanic male, 15 to 20-yearsold, wearing a black “SPACEX” long sleeve shirt, pink baseball hat, with black hair, brown eyes.

MONROVIA Sept. 14 At 1:43 a.m., officers were patrolling the 200 block of West Pomona when they saw a male subject prying open the front door to a residential complex that had just been built. When the subject saw officers, he ran from them. They apprehended the subject, who was found to be in possession of multiple burglary tools. The subject was arrested.

At 6:47 p.m., an officer was patrolling the 100 block of East Colorado when he saw a male subject who was having difficulty walking. He stopped to see if the subject needed assistance and found him to be heavily intoxicated. The sub-

At 4:52 p.m., a vehicle burglary was reported at a business parking lot in the 900 block of West Duarte. The victim was inside one of the businesses and when she returned to her car, she found someone had shattered one of her car windows. Sept. 16 At 9:41 a.m., a resident in the 800 block of West Olive reported her boyfriend had just attempted to strangle her, and then fled in her vehicle.

Officers stopped the suspect on their way to her house and detained the male subject.

After an investigation, he was arrested for domestic violence.

Sept. 17 At 12:39 a.m., an officer was patrolling the 700 block of East Huntington when he saw a male subject riding a bicycle and violating one of the vehicle codes. He stopped the subject, and during a pat-down search for the officer’s safety, a methamphetamine pipe was discovered. The subject was arrested.

At 12:31 p.m., a caller reported two male subjects fist fighting in the 600 block of West Huntington. Officers arrived and contacted both subjects. After an investiga-

SIERRA MADRE Sept. 17

At 3:10 p.m., a resident in the 100 block of South Madison walked outside her home to her car and discovered someone had shattered one of her car windows. The suspect stole her purse, passport and credit cards, which were in the vehicle. This investigation is continuing.

At 7:21 p.m., a caller reported loud yelling going on at a house in the 600 block of West Olive. Officers arrived and contacted three subjects inside the house, two males and a female. After an investigation was conducted, it was determined that the two male subjects were involved in an argument and one of the male subjects began hitting the other.

Sept. 19 At 6:50 p.m., a customer of a restaurant in the 900 block of West Huntington finished eating and walked outside to the parking lot. She found her car had been burglarized while she was inside the restaurant. One of the car windows had been shattered and her backpack and laptop

At about 7:29 a.m., officers responded to a report of a child possibly injured after falling off her bicycle in the 300 block of East Grandview Avenue. The child was cleared and released to her parents following an evaluation by Sierra Madre Fire Department.

Sept. 18 At 7 p.m. two male suspects entered a business in the 00 block of Kersting Court and purchased two meals. Each suspect paid with a counterfeit $100 bill. The total loss was $200.

Sept. 21 Following a traffic stop for a vehicle code violation in the 100 block of West Montecito Avenue an investigation revealed that the driver did not have a driver’s license or an identification card in his possession. The driver was arrested for failure to provide identification and for driving a vehicle while being unlicensed. The driver was transported to the Pasadena Jail and booked.

Our DNA influences our ability to read a person’s thoughts and emotions from looking at their eyes, suggests a new study published in the journal Molecular Psychiatry.

Twenty years ago, a team of scientists at the University of Cambridge developed a test of “cognitive empathy” called the

“Reading the Mind in the Eyes” Test (or the Eyes Test for short). This revealed that people can rapidly interpret what another person is thinking or feeling from looking at their eyes alone. It also showed that some of us are better at this than others, and that women on average score better on this test than men.

Picture of Dorian Gray,’ a play adapted from Oscar Wilde’s novella ‘The Picture of Dorian Gray,’ goes on stage from September 23 to November 16 at A Noise Within. Adapted and directed by Michael Michetti, its three main characters are Colin Bates as Dorian Gray, Frederic Stuart as Lord Henry Wooton, and Amin El Gamal as Basil Hallward.

Wilde’s Dorian Gray is so entranced by the beauty of his own portrait that he sells his soul to preserve his youth and pays a price. Michetti’s adaptation, first produced at Boston Court Pasadena in

2006, explores the idolization of beauty and youth in an intimate, psychological journey. Avoiding the Gothic horror approach to the tale altogether, it follows instead the consequences of Dorian’s hedonistic lifestyle.

Explains Michetti of the remount, “When I did ‘A Picture of Dorian Gray’ 12 years ago at Boston Court, it was really successful and I was very proud of it. But I really didn’t think I was done with it and I thought this would be an opportunity to come back to it.

“This adaptation is embracing Oscar Wilde’s portrayal of Dorian’s sexual orientation, an aspect many adaptations have erased. In fact, there wasn’t any hint

of it in the 1945 film version.

That was one of the things that was important for me to restore.”

“A lot of the people who read it thought of it as a Gothic horror story but that was the

least interesting part of the story to me,” Michetti adds.

“There’s obviously a supernatural and dark element to it but, for me, Wilde wrote a very psychologically truthful story about what it was like

to pursue pleasure without regard to the consequences.

“I would like people, who feel they know the story, to recognize other aspects of it they had not previously been conscious of, or didn’t know were there. For me, it all comes back to the appreciation of Wilde and how inspired this novel is, how deeply he understands humanity. That we can use his words and tell the story that feels fresh and relevant in the 21st century is surprising for a work that’s 125 years old.”

El Gamal is amazed that Michetti chose him to play the role of Basil. “It was very insightful of Michael to have thought of me. He’s a character I think I relate to strongly,

although I’ve never seen productions where the characteristics brought out in this adaptation were showcased.

I’m very sensitive to the fact that people can be like Basil or Harry. I can certainly relate to both Harry’s wanting to pursue his goals with enthusiasm in the same way that I appreciate Basil’s sense of morality.”

“I think in today’s social media and selfie-obsessed culture, people can feel disposable and we can forget to be respectful and communicative. I hope Basil, as a sort of advocate for kindness and basic human decency, reminds audiences to take a little better care of themselves and each other,” says El Gamal.

Equestrians Galloping to Pasadena for the Rose Parade The Tournament of Roses has announced 18 equestrian groups to ride in the 130th Rose Parade. Equestrians participating in the Rose Parade showcase a variety of breeds as well as unique tack and costumes. All riders must have previous parade riding experience.

In addition to riding in the five and a half mile-long Rose Parade route on Tuesday, Jan. 1, these equestrian groups are invited to take part in Equestfest presented by Wells Fargo, which

will take place on Saturday, Dec. 29 at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center. During Equestfest, groups perform trick riding, drills, dancing and roping skills, and attendees can walk through the stables and speak with the riders.

Greek culture is known for its distinct music, food and dancing. “This is a community event that brings everyone together,” says Vidalakis.

On this particular day, the community was brought together within the walls of Saint Anthony’s, enticed by the unmistakable aroma of gyros and souvlakia, and captivated by the sound of live Greek music, which could be heard from several street blocks away.

Within the realm of food alone, the volunteers at Saint Anthony’s had prepared numerous options with different appeals. Outside the

building, patrons found the more popular type of Greek food, like gyros, baklava and lamb chops.

Meanwhile, inside the building were homemade traditional dishes, each served by a volunteer from large trays. “All of the food here was made by volunteers,” says Vidalakis. One of the volunteers, who identifies himself as Caleb, says “You can’t get these things anywhere else, outside of a Greek festival.”

In the courtyard, within dancing distance of the band and dance floor, a tent had been erected and inside was a bar, complete with flat screen televisions and high, round tables. Overhead, a sign reads Sports Bar Est. 776 B.C. For those seeking refreshment without alcohol, Greek

coffee was prepared by willing volunteers, specially crafting a dark, thick, frothy beverage with customer-desired levels of sweetening.

Next to the coffee stand stood a perpetual line of locals, all waiting patiently in the sunlight for a volunteer to assist them in filling trays of authentic Greek pastries. They filled plastic containers with scores of homemade pastries, including baklava, a Greek treat composed of crushed walnuts, a multitude of philo wraps, perfectly spiced with cloves and held in suspended bliss by a generous amount of golden honey.

PUSD Launches ‘Attend Today Achieve Tomorrow’ The Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) launched “Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow,” an annual year-long campaign that brings students and their families, schools, public agencies, and community partners together to improve school attendance. PUSD’s goal is to raise attendance to 97 percent this year.

“Students need to be in school to learn and get academic and social skills that prepare them to be successful later in life,” said Superintendent Brian McDonald.

“Improving school attendance involves everyone: families, schools, and the broader community.”

Chronic absence - missing 10 percent of the school year - creates gaps in learning.

Students in kindergarten and the early grades tend to miss the most school, with the problem peaking again in high school. Students who are chronically absent are 50 percent more likely to read below grade level, struggle with coursework, or get off-track for graduation. In 2017-2018, 12.74 percent of K-12 students in PUSD missed school more than 10 percent

Pasadena Educational Foundation Receives Endowment of $500,000 The Pasadena Educational Foundation (PEF) received a $500,000 endowment gift from Keith and Margaret Russell to support PEF's work supporting the students, teachers, and schools of the Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD). This gift is the largest endowment gift in PEF's history and will be given out over a 10-year period.

Arcadia Realtors Say Housing Demand in Decline California’s housing market dropped below the 400,000-level sales benchmark for the first time in more than two years as high home prices and eroding affordability combined to cut into housing demand, the Arcadia Association of Realtors (AAR) said recently.

Closed escrow sales of existing, single-family detached homes in California totaled a seasonally adjusted annualized rate of 399,600 units in August, according to information collected by the California Association of Realtors from more than 90 local realtor associations statewide. The statewide annualized sales figure represents what would be

the total number of homes sold during 2018 if sales maintained the August pace throughout the year.

It is adjusted to account for seasonal factors that typically influence home sales.

August’s sales figure was down 1.8 percent from the revised 406,920 level in July and down 6.6 percent compared with home sales in August 2017 of 427,630.

“Home sales activity remained on a downward trend for the fourth straight month as uncertainty about the housing market continues to mount,” said AAR President Margaret Garemore.

he sun is baking down on the small coffee kiosk hidden in the courtyard of Pasadena Central Library, but that doesn’t mean customers aren’t ordering the hot stuff. The proprietor of Espress Yourself Coffee Bar, Richard Hawthorne, extends an open tin of

tea leaves like a bouquet, inviting the customer to take in its scent.

“Isn’t that marvelous?” he says before setting a timer to make sure the brew is perfect.

This particular blend belongs to the director of the library, who requested Espress Yourself carry it as it was her especial favorite.

Hawthorne agreed, and added it to his menu under the moniker “Director’s Choice.” It’s a small move that reflects Hawthorne’s approach to success for Espress Yourself: know your customers; know what they like to drink.

“Our team genuinely values each customer, providing them with the best quality drink of their choice in a timely manner,” said Hawthorne. “We call it ‘panache’ service.”

Espress Yourself, launched in 1993 but at the library for the last 16 years, focuses on specialty coffees, teas and espresso drinks styled after true Italian espressos. Long-time signatures include the creamy pot of gold latte, Italian macchi-

ato and butternut latte—all of which pack a caffeinated punch.

“We had a location at USC University Hospital (now known as Keck) and a man kept coming round, often multiple times a day ordering two double espressos. Sometimes he’d ask just for a cup of espresso beans!

It was then that I noticed the patient’s bracelet around his wrist,” laughed Hawthorne.

“We secretly switched him to decaf after that.”

Though solely serving the Pasadena community now, the concept for Espress Yourself began to percolate in Portland 36 years ago when Hawthorne and his wife were kept up late o’ nights after the open heart surgery of their infant daughter, Michelle. Friends supplied them with robust, French-pressed coffee to keep them awake—and Hawthorne never forgot the comforting power of a hot drink.

“When Espress Yourself first opened in 1993, I focused on hospitals because I had wished there had been one when our daughter was

in the hospital,” he said. “I knew how it would help the medical staff, patients and their families.”

Today, the kiosk continues to serve as a kind of retreat for those who work in the area: government employees, library staff, even jury duty folk on break at nearby City Hall. They pass through the courtyard for a coffee fix, a breath of fresh air or just a quick chat with Hawthorne and his staff. The key thing is: they’re remembered.

“Community is very important to us. This is where we’ve spent our lives since 1985,” said Hawthorne. “It’s a privilege to meet and serve so many unique people.”

Spanish Charm and California History in Cozy Claremont

laremont is only about 30 miles from Pasadena, but my recent trip to the sleepy college town transported me much further away, to a relaxing and beautiful place reminiscent of a mountain resort community with touches of Spain.

My getaway to Claremont began when a friend and I checked into a luxurious suite at Casa 425, a Spanish-styled boutique hotel in the heart of the town square. Replete with a red tiled roof, white stucco exterior, classic Spanish arches, and an interior, tree-lined plaza courtyard, the 28-room hotel is an alluring structure in the small town, located at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains.

The rooms at Casa 425 are no less grand. Our second-floor accommodations featured a large glass-wall entry way that overlooked the hotel's lounge and courtyard.

Inside the suite we found a huge soaking tube, separating the living room from the bathroom. Other room highlights included a comfy king bed, with down comforter and fine linens, large wall-mounted TV, separate shower, small refrigerator, coffee maker, and free wireless Internet.

Besides well-appointed rooms, the hotel also offers a complimentary European breakfast, and boasts Casa 425 Lounge & Bar. This signature hang-out has a full bar and serves savory small plates

in an intimate setting, with a cozy indoor room and outdoor seating in the courtyard, surrounded by glass fire pits and heat lamps.

Across the street from the hotel is the Packing House (claremontpackinghouse.com), the largest historic building in the Claremont Village. With scores of restaurants, shops, and businesses located under its metal roof, it has become one of the hottest destinations in town.

The history of the

Packing House began in the 1890s when Claremont was a major fruit-growing area. Around this time, local growers founded the state's first agricultural cooperative and built the Packing House in 1922 to process fruit, pack it in boxes with distinctive commercial art labels and then ship it around the world.

As local orchards disappeared, the Packing House eventually shut down in 1972 and stood empty until the city purchased the building and restored it in 2007.

After touring the Packing House, my friend and I strolled a few blocks through town to dinner at Viva Madrid (vivamadrid.com), an authentic Spanish restaurant teeming with tasty tapas in a colorful, home-styled, antique store-type setting.

Copies of those rates are on file with the Director of Public Works, and are available to any interested party upon request. The Contractor shall post a copy of the DIR’s determination of the prevailing rate of per diem wages at each job site. This Project is subject to compliance monitoring and enforcement by the DIR. BONDS - Each Bid must be accompanied by a cash deposit, cashier’s check, certified check, or Bidder’s Bond issued by a Surety insurer, made payable to the City and in an amount not less than ten percent (10%) of the total Bid submitted. Personal or company checks are not acceptable. Upon Contract award, the Contractor shall provide faithful performance and payment Bonds, each in a sum equal to the Contract Price. All Bonds must be issued by a California admitted Surety insurer using the forms set forth in the Contract Documents, or in any other form approved by the City Attorney. Failure to enter into the Contract with the City, including the submission of all required Bonds and insurance coverage, within fifteen (15) Days after the date of the mailing of written notice of contract award to the Bidder, shall subject the Bid security to forfeiture to the extent provided by law.

LICENSES - Each Bidder shall possess a valid Class “A” Contractor’s license issued by the California State Contractors License Board at the time of the Bid submission. The successful Contractor will be required to obtain a City business license.

RETENTION SUBSTITUTION - Five percent (5%) of any progress payment will be withheld as retention. In accordance with Public Contract Code Section 22300, and at the request and expense of the Contractor, securities equivalent to the amount withheld may be deposited with the City or with a State or federally chartered bank as escrow agent, which shall then pay such moneys to the Contractor.

Upon satisfactory completion of the Project, the securities shall be returned to the Contractor. Alternatively, the Contractor may request that the City make payments of earned retentions directly to an escrow agent at the Contractor’s expense. No such substitutions shall be accepted until all related documents are approved by the City Attorney.

How uplifting it is to read Esma Ali’s words of praise for Monrovia’s police officers in handling what could have been a humiliating incident for her - and which, if someone else had been in her place, could have escalated into a high profile lawsuit.

In my opinion, Esma is an architect not of ugly walls that separate us, but of beautiful bridges that unite us.

Dear Editor, How wonderful the management of Pasadena financial resources has become?

Management has enlarged the city with excessive development; reaping millions in new money to the city coffer from increased property values on all these new buildings as well as permit fees.

Our streets have been torn up everywhere you look where this development has occurred. Now the city wants all of us to fix the streets even those who come and visit.

Maybe the developers making profits on our city should be the first ones to pony up the money to fix the streets they broke up, leaving neighborhood streets the responsibility of existing budgets and time tables. To mention: Where has the money gone when property is sold and side walk repair money has been collected to fix those sidewalks? Sometimes those same properties are sold twice and charged twice and still no repairs made. Where did that

It’s just a fact of life. If you’ve been thinking of finding a new job, this is the time.

But, finding a job isn’t just about wanting one. When you’re passively thinking about getting a job, you can stand to wait a few years until one falls into your lap. But, if you’re hoping to find one now, being passive isn’t going to cut it. You’re going to have to work for it the old fashioned way. You’re going to have to put in time - lots of time.

You may be thinking, “But, Angela, I’m a busy person! I have a full-time job. I have a family. I have commitments!

I only have so much time in a week.” I hear you. I get it. I empathize with your situation more than you can imagine.

But, at the end of the day, you have to decide. Do you want to find a new job this year or not?

You may have to cut back a little on other activities. You may have to take vacation days to work on your search.

Management today says they have cut back on employee numbers to save money. What they forgot to tell us is those still employed all got raises starting from the top. Those same people who make up the budget and make no sacrifices for themselves.

The police and fire departments gobble up a great share of the budget money and never do we hear or see the amount of the pension liability on the budget process while asking for the sales tax increase. Will any part of the increased sales tax money go to pay down obligations to any city pensions?

How will the homelessness issue be addressed? How much money can this issue rely on to solve the problem or will that money encourage even more homelessness?

After all union station has been around a long time and only seems to grow more needs.

Five-Month-Old Tiger These sweet babies are about five months old. Sweet Pea is the pretty all charcoal gray girl who looks at you with soulful eyes and enjoys cuddling. Tiger is one of her brothers, and he has an Abyssinian look to his fur, gray with whitish ticking. Spunkster is a gray tabby with white under his chin, white paws, and a cute white tip on his tail. All have a very mild condition of cerebella hypoplasia which makes them shake their heads a little. However, no medications are needed and they can run, jump, and chase just like any other feline. Crescenta Valley Falcons Soar Past Pasadena Bulldogs

asadena football’s three-game win streak was finally snapped on Friday after the Bulldogs were no match for Crescenta Valley’s high-flying offense in a 47-28 defeat.

The Bulldogs hit the road looking to bag its fourth win of the season and the second in Pacific League play. To Pasadena’s dismay, the Falcons had other plans whose juggernaut offense has propelled the team to a season-opening four straight victories.

Friday’s game was no different as Crescenta Valley

established their dominance over Pasadena from beginning to end. The Bulldogs struggled to stymie the Falcon’s dynamic offense, which was led by quarterback Cole Doyle. Along with throwing 21 of 33 for 250 yards, the senior also moved into the No. 2 spot for most wins as a quarterback in Falcons program history.

By halftime, Pasadena was already down 37-6 after the Falcons erupted for 30 points in the second. The Bulldogs did manage to notch 16 unanswered points in the fourth quarter but the game was well out of reach

Arcadia Football Packs a Late Punch in Win Over Burbank The Arcadia football team made up for a lackluster start with a 42-point explosion in three quarters to steamroll Burbank 45-28 for its second Pacific League wins on Friday.

Things looked bleak for the Apaches in the beginning stages of their contest with the Bulldogs. The offense looked listless, which was uncharacteristic for an Apaches squad that had been averaging 36.5 points a game up until that

point.

Despite putting up a measly three points in the first, Arcadia found its rhythm in the second and managed to gain a 17-14 edge on Burbank going into the half. Coming out of the break, the Apaches never looked back as they continued to pour it on thanks to big plays from quarterback Dylan Guerra.

Arcadia effectively locked up the victory after a Burbank

fumble turned into an 80-yard touchdown from Rolandiss Whitener to give the Apaches a 31-14 lead. Whitener wasn’t done there yet as the senior drove in a 48-yard touchdown early in the fourth to put the game on ice.

The win improved Arcadia to 3-2 overall and 2-0 in Pacific League play as it prepares for its home match-up with Hoover (1-4) on Thursday at 7 p.m.

Road Win Keeps Monrovia Volleyball Within Striking Distance On the surface, it seemed Monrovia’s quick sweep of Temple City didn’t hold much significance. To the Wildcats, however, the victory could possibly serve as the turning point in their turbulent season as they fight to remain above .500.

In recent weeks, Monrovia has fallen behind in the Rio Hondo League title race by losing its last couple of games to San Marino and La Canada. Despite the setbacks, a win over Blair last week and Tuesday’s win over the Rams still have the Wildcats in

good position to make a final push in the final weeks of the regular season.

“We have to show up consistently and that’s something that we haven’t done,” said Monrovia Head Coach Ashlee Sinic. “But once we start doing that, I think we have everything that it takes to snatch that No.1 seed.”

The Wildcats got down to business against Temple City, setting the tone when they took the first set by a commanding 25-11 margin.

match for Monrovia’s length and raw athleticism.

The second and third sets featured more of the same with the Wildcats dictating the tempo even when committing a couple of miscues here and there. Ultimately, Monrovia cruised to victories of 25-18 and 25-21 in the second and third sets, respectively.

The win keeps Monrovia’s record over .500 (3-2) while dropping Temple City to 1-4. The Wildcats will have a chance to make up a

lot of ground when they take on South Pasadena (3-2) on Thursday – a team they already defeated in their league opener – and then compete in the Gabrielino Tournament on Saturday.

“We just have to go in and get ready to play tough,” Sinic said. “It’s really important that we defeat South Pasadena and that we also play well at Gabrielino’s tournament on Saturday and take that into another San Marino-La Canada week.”
