announced.

Governor Jerry Brown signed SB 972, suicide prevention legislation authored by Senator Anthony J. Portantino.

“I would like to thank Governor Brown for signing SB 972 and his support on this important issue. As a father and a legislator, the safety of our children continues to be a priority.

My hope is to foster an open dialogue about suicide and to help prevent these horrific tragedies. If one life can be saved through this bill then all of our efforts will have been worth it,” commented Senator Portantino.

Senator Portantino is a strong advocate for suicide prevention and mental health policy. SB 972 requires public, charter, and private schools that serve pupils from seventh – 12th and higher education to print the National Suicide Prevention Hotline telephone number on student identification cards.

Adolescent suicide and selfinflicted injury are a serious social and public health concern. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, suicide is the second leading cause of death among young people

Third Annual Monrovia Station Beer Wine & Music Festival With plenty of craft beer, wine sampling and live music, the San Gabriel Valley community celebrated the third annual Monrovia Station Beer, Wine & Music Festival last Saturday. The event benefits the Monrovia Chamber of Commerce and the Boys & Girls Club of the Foothills.

More than 30 craft beers and wines were offered, coming directly to you from California’s best artisanal makers and the original Wine of the Month Club.

Monrovia’s 38 Degrees lined up some of the area’s best local breweries including Hop Secret. There was delicious food and great music from the Swinging 8 Balls and The Sundowners.

Ted Jorgensen, a local beer enthusiast who came all the way from Altadena said this beer fest was “one of the best damn beer festivals ever held locally.” He added that his preference in brews - IPA’s –“were in abundance.”

Al Parker’s Modernist Artworks Displayed in Sierra Madre Sierra Madre City Hall presents a collection of work from artist and illustrator, Al Parker (1906 – 1985). The collection can be viewed at 232 W. Sierra Madre Blvd. during regular business hours in the main lobby at City Hall through Nov. 26.

A founder of the modern glamour aesthetic, Alfred Charles Parker defined the progressive look and feel of published imagery at a time of sweeping change.

His innovative,

modernist artworks created for women’s magazines and their advertisers in the midtwentieth century captivated upwardly mobile readers, reflecting and profoundly influencing the values and aspirations of American families during the post-war era.

This collection hanging in Sierra Madre provides a brief glimpse at the influential work of a mid-20th century master of magazine illustration.

ARCADIA Sept.9 Just after 3 p.m., an officer responded to the 900 block of West Fairview Avenue regarding a vehicle burglary report. An unknown suspect entered the vehicle that was parked along the roadway by unknown means and stole several pieces of property that were inside. No suspects were seen and no witnesses were located.

Sept. 10 At around 3 a.m., officers responded to the parking structure of 24 Hour Fitness, 125 N. First Ave., regarding a GPS tracker notification. Arcadia PD detectives had previously deployed a decoy vehicle with property containing a tracking device to combat the increase in vehicle burglaries around the city. An investigation revealed the suspects smashed the windows to the vehicle and fled the scene with the stolen property. Officers located the suspects in their vehicle with the stolen property. The 27-year-old male and 28-year-old female, both from El Monte, were arrested.

Sept. 11 Just after 11 a.m., an officer conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle near the intersection of Huntington Drive and Golden West Avenue for having expired registration. The license plate falsely displayed a current year tab. The officer contacted the driver and an investigation revealed he was in possession of cocaine.

The 62-year-old male from El Monte was arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking.

Sept. 12 Just before 11 a.m., an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 700 block of Arcadia Avenue regarding a burglary report. An investigation revealed the unknown suspect(s) removed the screen to an open master bedroom window while the residents were in the living room. The

crime blotters suspect(s) made entry, stole approximately $1,000 in cash and fled the scene through a back door without being detected.

Just after 10 p.m., an officer was dispatched to Starbucks, 5 W. Live Oak Ave., regarding multiple reports of a drunk driver. The officer located the suspect vehicle, which was still running, illegally parked in a handicapped parking stall. Upon contacting the driver, the officer detected a strong odor of alcohol emitting from the driver. Through a series of tests, the officer determined the 61-year-old male from Temple City was driving under the influence of an alcoholic beverage. The suspect was arrested.

Sept. 13 At approximately 4:30 p.m., an officer responded to a residence in the 1500 block of Christine Lane regarding a burglary. An investigation revealed unknown suspect(s) entered the home by kicking in and removing the pedestrian door of the garage. The suspect(s) entered the home, stole jewelry and fled the scene undetected.

At about 12:30 p.m., an officer conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle in the area of Peck Road and Clark Street for having expired registration. Upon contacting the driver, the officer discovered the 40-year-old male from Azusa was driving with a suspended license. He was cited and released in the field.

The vehicle was left legally parked.

Sept. 15 Just before 6:30 p.m., officers responded to Burlington Coat Factory, 1201 S. Baldwin Ave., regarding the report of a vehicle burglary. While conducting an investigation, a suspicious subject ran from the officers after they attempted to speak with him. The suspect was ultimately detained and it was discovered that he was in possession of burglary tools, a stun gun, methamphetamine, heroin, and drug paraphernalia. The 45-year-old male from Stevensville, Montana was arrested.

MONROVIA Sept. 8

Just after 9 p.m., officers were dispatched to a residential complex in the 1100 block of Fairview Avenue regarding the report of a battery. An investigation revealed an argument occurred between two residents. A male adult struck another male adult in his face with his fist, causing his tooth to be knocked out and lacerations to his mouth. The 29-year-old male from Arcadia was arrested.

Sept. 14 Just after 10 a.m., officers were dispatched to the 500 block of Santa Cruz Road regarding the report of a reported stolen vehicle in the area.

Officers located the vehicle and the driver. The driver was found to be in possession of a BB gun, methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. He also had an outstanding warrant for his arrest. The 45-yearold male from Rialto was arrested and transported to the

At 12:49 a.m., a resident in the 400 block of Monrovista reported her ex-boyfriend was continuously driving by her house honking his horn. Officers responded to the area and located the driver, who was found to be heavily intoxicated. Field sobriety tests were conducted, and the subject was arrested for DUI. At 8:46 a.m., the owner of a business in the 1000 block of South Mountain arrived to work and discovered the warehouse and been burglarized sometime during the night and his black Volkswagen had been stolen from inside the building.

At 12:15 p.m., a resident in the 800 block of West Duarte was checking his bank account statement and saw several charges that he did not make. All of the charges were from online purchases.

Sept. 9 At 9:06 a.m., an employee of a store in the 1600 block of South Mountain reported three male subjects had just run out of the store with power tools and did not pay for them.

One of the subjects yelled at employees that he would shoot them if they tried to stop them.

Officers searched the area for the suspects, but were unable to locate them.

At 1:15 p.m., a caller reported a male and female subject yelling at each other in the 1700 block of South Myrtle.

Officers arrived and contacted both subjects. A computer check revealed one of them had a warrant for his arrest, so he was taken into custody.

At 11:42 p.m., an officer was patrolling the 2500 block of South Myrtle when he saw a motorist speeding. As he attempted to catch up to the vehicle, he saw the vehicle drive through two solid red lights.

He stopped the vehicle and contacted the driver, who was found to be heavily intoxicated.

After field sobriety tests were conducted, the driver was arrested for DUI. Sept. 10 At 12:02 a.m., a caller reported a male subject lying in the street in the 200 block of South Encinitas. Officers responded and contacted the subject. He was heavily intoxicated and unable to care for his own safety, so officers took him into custody.

At 4:31 p.m., a resident in the 800 block of West Chestnut walked outside his home and attempted to start his vehicle, but it wouldn’t start. He lifted the hood and discovered

someone had stolen the car battery. Another resident in the same block reported their car battery was also stolen.

At 9:08 p.m., an employee of a business in the 800 block of East Huntington reported the business had just been robbed. Two male subjects entered the business brandishing handguns and demanded cash, while a third subject remained outside as a lookout. The employees handed over cash and the suspects fled the area. Officers responded and searched for the suspects, but could not locate them.

At 11:01 p.m., a resident in the 100 block of North Canyon reported seeing a male subject attempting to gain entry into a locked vehicle. When officers arrived, they watched the suspect gain entry. The suspect was rummaging through the inside of the vehicle as officers contacted him. The vehicle did not belong to him, so he was arrested.

Sept. 11 At 7:16 p.m., a resident in the 400 block of South Fifth walked outside his home and attempted to start his vehicle, but it wouldn’t start. He looked inside the engine compartment and discovered someone had stolen his car battery.

Sept. 12 At 11:07 a.m., a resident in the 200 block of North Shamrock reported her roommate had just hit her. They had been arguing about the victim taking a plant with her as she was moving out. Officers responded and after an investigation, took the suspect into custody.

At 6:05 p.m., a caller reported a motorist had just collided into the side of a house in the 300 block of North Canyon.

Officers responded, along with Monrovia Paramedics, and contacted the driver. The driver had suffered a heart attack while driving. He did not have any injuries from the collision. He was transported to a nearby hospital.

SIERRA MADRE Sept. 12 A man was contacted at about 7:14 p.m. due to drinking in public and being intoxicated in the 00 block of West Sierra Madre Boulevard. The man was subsequently arrested for public intoxication and for an additional outside warrant.

Sept.14 Between 4:58 a.m. and 5:17 a.m., an unknown male subject entered the driveway in the 200 block of Grove Street.

The male subject was seen on video surveillance cameras attempting to open the driver’s side door by pulling on the door handle. The suspect then fled the scene on a bicycle.

At 3:03 p.m. officers responded to a traffic collision where the vehicle crashed into a brick mailbox at a residence in the 100 block South Rancho Road due to a medical emergency.

Sept. 16 At approximately 5:10 a.m., video cameras showed an unknown male subject walk up the driveway in the 2000 block of Liliano Drive and enter an unlocked vehicle. The suspect then fled the scene.

ave you ever fantasized about visiting the place where a popular television show or famous movie was filmed? My Valley Pass, a network guide that headlines entertainment, is proudly presenting Pasadena Film Tour on Sept. 24. The special three hour driving tour will be featuring iconic locations in the City of Roses where TV shows and movies have been filmed.

The tour will be guided by Jared Cowan, a film enthusiast, photographer and camera operator. Filming locations of shows such as “Beverly Hills 90210” and movies like “Back to the Future,” “Legally Blonde” and “La La Land,” just to name a few, may be part of this fun excursion.

was the exterior location of Doc Brown’s mansion in the film “Back to the Future.”

However, the interior scenes were filmed in a different house called the Blacker House. Both houses designed by the same architects, Charles and Henry Greene.

Other houses featured throughout the movie were also filmed not far from one another in the City of Pasadena.

Recreating environments

to match the description of what is taking place in a movie is all part of the fun that comes with film making.

For example, a movie may display taking place in Boston, Massachusetts when in reality the filming took place in Pasadena, California.

The movie “Legally Blonde” displays scenes taking place at Harvard University but in fact some of the scenes were actually filmed in Pasadena.

Learn to Make Origami at Storrier Stearns Japanese Garden in Pasadena The Storrier Stearns Japanese Garden will hold its annual Pasadena Origami Festival on Sept. 30 from 12 – 4 p.m. as part of this month's Open Day Last Sunday.

Traditional Japanese origami has been practiced since the Edo period (1603–1867) and now beginners and experts alike can enjoy this ancient craft in the setting of a beautiful Japanese garden.

In a garden turned into an outdoor paper folding classroom, a community of children and adults will have the guidance of experts to help them transform the flat squares of origami paper, provided by the garden, into delicate sculptures to treasure or give as gifts.

POP Demands That Development of Fuller Include Affordable Housing for Pasadenans Pasadenans Organizing for Progress (POP) sent a letter on Sept. 16 to Pasadena city officials as well as the Fuller Theological Seminary president and board of trustees demanding that future development of the Fuller campus – which the school is abandoning to move to Pomona – incorporate strict guidelines that require significant affordable housing and other community benefits.

The letter called on Fuller to temporarily cease its efforts to sell its land

holdings in Pasadena, so the city and POP can discuss a “community benefits agreement” (CBA) that will govern future development of the site. POP sent the letter to Mayor Terry Tornek, members of the City Council, Pasadena Planning Director David Reyes, Fuller President Mark Labberton, members of the City Planning Commission, the entire Fuller Board of Trustees, and CBRE (the real estate broker that is soliciting development proposals on Fuller’s behalf).

CBA’s are used in many

other cities to make sure that developers address community needs.

The Fuller campus, located in downtown Pasadena, is one of the largest development sites in the city.

The felony complaint includes allegations that the defendant personally used a knife and inflicted

Deputy District Attorney Christopher Stogel is assigned to the case.

Prosecutors said Santiago allegedly stabbed Jerry Chan, 42, and Dan Trevino, 32, in the 2600 block of East Colorado Boulevard.

Chan was

fatally stabbed and Trevino was stabbed in the leg. The defendant was arrested soon after the attack.

If convicted as charged, he faces a maximum possible sentence of life in state prison.

The case is being investigated by the Pasadena Police Department.

f course, your college application essay is not enough to get accepted. Just look at Harvard’s 2018 admission statistics: out of 39,506 applicants, only 2,000 got accepted.

Clearly, not only your application essay is at play here. College admission is a holistic process that involves a lot more than meets the eye.

While Pasadena students are waiting for feedback from colleges, as college admission deadlines vary from Aug. 18 to the middle of September, I would like to talk about the reasons why the college application essay is not enough, and what admission officers are looking for in college applicants.

Disclaimer: despite what you might think, admission officers do read all college application essays. They are required to do so, as they need

to take notes, which later serve as an important factor in their final decision.

But apparently, reading an essay is not enough, and there are some additional aspects that can influence the final decision substantially. Let’s take a look at them.

1. Meeting the Academic Threshold Acceptance rates highly depend on which courses the student has taken during high school and other educationrelated activities. They show how well a student will perform at college. Anthony Ferguson Jr., admission counselor from Drake University says that students, who explore different classes, activities, and opportunities, immediately grab his attention.

Grades and academic performance are among the most important criteria for college admission officers. But before taking a final decision, admission officers also want to know that students have a strong foundation to cope

with difficult college assignments and have the ability to handle difficult college courses.

Admission officers say that they seldom make a positive decision in favor of a student that isn’t ready to handle the academic workload at college.

This factor, of course, depends on a college, but most higher education institutions want to see students capable of managing the academic threshold.

2. Statements in the Essay May Not Reflect the Reality You might have a very strong and persuasive college application essay. And college admission officers may be rooting for you until they find out that the statements in your essay do not correspond to the reality.

Meet Pasadena Roving Archers (PRA).

Wholly operated by volunteers, this nonprofit is devoted to mastering (and celebrating) the art of the bow and arrow to keep the sport alive for modern-day archers.

“I started arching in 2015 when zombies were a big thing, kind of as a joking challenge for myself, like, ‘I'm gonna need skills for the zombie apocalypse,’” said Lauren Kubota, director of public relations for PRA and a

fine archer in her own right. “I came across Roving Archers and found it was the only place that did a free introductory course for first-time archers. The club also runs a returning archers program for those who want to try, but not purchase a ton of equipment.

A volunteer helped me enroll in some of the classes—and I went almost every single weekend after that.”

The club meets in Pasadena’s Lower Arroyo at an archery range that’s open to the public, yet maintained by the Pasadena Roving Archers as part of the city’s recreation program. Free beginner classes every Saturday and frequent tournaments have

attracted up to 300 fulltime members and 10,000 participating archers every year—with the club’s brand of archery an especial draw.

“Roving archery is a little more like golf: you move from target lane to target lane with changes in scenery, target type and elevation. Our club is one of the oldest clubs that helped develop the sport of roving archery, and for more experienced archers, we’re one of the few roving ranges that’s public in the area,” explained Kubota. She also lauded the club’s commitment to grooming archers in a community environment.

“The primary appeal of our club is that we run educa-

tion programs for beginners— not just first-time classes, but classes every step of the way to up your game. Very few archery clubs do that,” she said. “We have a huge community of archers who pass down their knowledge of equipment, competition rules and norms of the sport—it’s almost like a secret code.”

The nonprofit’s history is almost as storied as the sport it teaches.

I

’ve seen many castles and fortresses on my travels, but none stick in my head like the fortified Old Town of Dubrovnik, Croatia. If I didn’t actually walk upon its marble streets and touch its historic stone wall for myself, I’d swear it was a modern recreation of another time.

Founded by the Romans in the seventh century, Dubrovnik’s walled village is located on a rocky cliff overlooking the Dalmatian Coast of the Adriatic Sea, in the Southeastern part of Croatia. The city was known as Ragusa until the end of WWI, when it took its present name.

My first glance of the UNESCO World Heritage Site came from the deck of a cruise ship, which approached from the Mediterranean Sea. From this vantage point I got a panoramic view of the giant stone wall surrounding the city. Jetting 100 feet high from the rocks that line the coast, the 20-feet-thick wall stretches more than 6,350 feet long as it wraps around mediaeval ramparts, draw

Day Tripping Through Dubrovnik, Croatia bridges, and other castle features. For those wanting a cool, birds-eye view, it is possible to walk along the wall to get a memorable look at the “Pearl of the Adriatic” and its nearby islands.

The barrier took nearly 500 years to complete and was built to protect the town and its prized location from ambitious invaders.

Today it is considered one of Europe’s finest surviving fortress walls. It’s easy to understand why George Bernard Shaw once said "if you want to see heaven on earth, come to Dubrovnik.”

After docking in the modern Port of Dubrovnik, I took a bus to edge of Old Town, where I found an exciting seaside atmosphere. There were kids eating ice cream on green lawns overlooking the water, shops full of tourists and pubs pouring beer. On one side I watched colorful fishing boats bob in the harbor beneath the fortress wall, and on the other side, I noticed hotels blending in with regular homes.

To enter Old Town I walked through the main Pile Gate, where I discovered a medieval world of densely packed brick build-

ings with arched doorways, marble inlays and red tiled roofs. Many of the buildings are mixed-used with private residences set atop quaint shops and charming outdoor cafes.

The town is dissected by a large and shiny limestone main street, which branches into a network of narrow, sloping alleys and steep stairways, teeming with plants. The bustling, cream-colored main street brightly reflects the sun’s rays during the day and turns them into a sandy glowing hue at night.

The landscape is also speckled with Baroque churches, monasteries and palaces, Renaissance fountains and facades, all intertwined with gleaming wide marble-paved squares and those steep cobbled streets, all of which have also remained unchanged for centuries. Old Town is also home to an 800-year-old Gothic church and Europe’s oldest pharmacy.

e know that Californians have developed sophisticated palates when sushi and sashimi restaurants are as ubiquitous as eateries serving standard American fare. In the San Gabriel Valley, Japanese food is so mainstream that ramen noodle joints can be found at every strip mall.

So how did ramen and sushi become something akin to staple dining options? Well, we can say that we owe our appreciation for raw seafood to a very enterprising immigrant who introduced sushi to Los Angeles.

Noritoshi Kanai, the former chairman of Los Angeles Mutual Trading Co., Inc. (Mutual Trading), may have singlehandedly been responsible for bringing sushi to our local dining scene. It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that sushi eating in this country is intrinsically linked with the company.

Mutual Trading’s Executive Vice President Atsuko Kanai, relates, “Mr. Kanai and his business consultant, a JewishAmerican gentleman named Harry Wolff, Jr., were trying to figure out what items they could next bring into the United States. They traveled all over Asia – the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore – but those trips yielded no viable leads.

“One night, on a dare, Mr. Kanai took Mr. Wolff to a sushi shop behind their hotel in Ginza. To his surprise, the American ate every raw fish they were served. A week later,

Mr. Kanai was presented a large bill from the sushi restaurant. Unbeknownst to him, Mr. Wolff had been visiting ‘his’ sushi man every evening before dinner to have his fill of sushi as appetizers.

“Not only was Mr. Wolff sold on sushi’s fresh appeal, he also believed Japanese chefs were great entertainers as they prepared the food in front of diners. He thought they were worldly – it didn’t matter that they really couldn’t speak English well – they had great charm and showmanship.

He thought it was a great concept to take back to the U.S.” That was how, in 1965, edomae-style sushi first landed on American soil.

Thereafter, young and ambitious sushi chefs came in droves to the U.S., built a niche business, and found success.

A shortage in fatty tuna (toro), an important component in the sushi trade, could very well have spelled disaster for any

Japanese restaurant. When this unfortunate episode occurred in the late 1960s and early 1970s the California Roll was created, using avocado as a substitute for the ‘toro.’ Today, even diners who can’t eat raw fish can order a California Roll and get the satisfaction of saying they enjoy eating sushi.

That ramen, once synonymous with the lowly ‘cup o’ noodles’ and consumed mainly by cashstrapped, dorm-dwelling college students, has been elevated to a loftier status as seen by the current craze for tonkatsu ramen, is proof that Americans’ fondness for Japanese food isn’t waning any time soon.

Sushi and sashimi, ramen and udon, with their distinctive flavors and style, have become profoundly appealing to a great many diners. That there is a Japanese culinary philosophy behind a serving of raw fish only makes eating sushi a sublimely pleasurable dining experience.

At the hearing, all interested persons were given an opportunity to be heard. The Planning Commission received and considered the staff report and all the information, evidence, and testimony presented in connection with this project. Following the close of the public hearing, the Planning Commission adopted Resolution No. PCR2018-0008 recommending approval of this Ordinance No. 2018-09.

SECTION 3. On September 4, 2018, the City Council of the City of Monrovia conducted a duly noticed public hearing on the project, including this Ordinance No. 2018-09. At the hearing, all interested persons were given an opportunity to be heard. SECTION 4. Environmental Review (a) Based on the information in the application and accompanying technical reports, an Initial Study was completed. The Initial Study indentified potentially significant effects; however, those impacts could be mitigated to a level of less than significant. The Engineer’s Estimated for this project is $ 11,200,000.00.

OBTAINING BID DOCUMENTS - Project Bid Documents, on a Digital Video Disc (DVD), may be picked up at the Public Works Department, 600 South Mountain Avenue, Monrovia, CA 91016, (626) 932-5575, by paying a non-refundable fee of $32.00 per DVD. Bid Documents, on DVD, will be mailed by U.S. Mail for an additional charge of $15.00 per DVD or sent by an express delivery service using the bidder’s account number or the bidder must pay the City in advance for the express service delivery. The City cannot guarantee the timeliness of mail or express delivery. Please call (626) 932-5575 to order a DVD. The City must receive payment before the Contract Documents will be provided.

FACSIMILE NUMBER AND EMAIL ADDRESS - Bidders shall supply the City Engineer with a facsimile number and email address to facilitate transmission of Addenda and other information related to

Failure to provide such a facsimile number and email address may result in late notification. The City does not guarantee that it will provide any information by facsimile, email, or both. MANDATORY PRE-BID MEETING AND SITE VISIT - A mandatory pre-bid meeting will be held on October 9, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at City of Monrovia Public Works Building at 600 South Mountain Ave. Every potential Bidder is required to attend the pre-bid meeting. Failure of a Bidder to attend will render that Bidder’s Bid non-responsive. No allowances for cost adjustments will be made if a Bidder fails to adequately examine the Project site before submitting a Bid. REGISTRATION WITH THE DEPARTMENT OF INDUSTRIAL RELATIONS - In accordance with Labor Code Sections 1725.5 and 1771.1, no contractor or subcontractor shall be qualified to bid on, be listed in a bid proposal, subject to the requirements of Section 4104 of the Public Contract Code, or engage in the performance of any contract for public work, unless currently registered and qualified to perform public work pursuant to Section 1725.5 [with limited exceptions for bid purposes only under Labor Code Section 1771.1(a)].

PREVAILING WAGES - In accordance with Labor Code Section 1770 et seq., the Project is a “public work”. The selected Bidder (Contractor) and any Subcontractors shall pay wages in accordance with the determination of the Director of the Department of Industrial Relations (“DIR”) regarding the prevailing rate of per diem wages.

Copies of those rates are on file with the Director of Public Works, and are available to any interested party upon request. The Contractor shall post a copy of the DIR’s determination of the prevailing rate of per diem wages at each job site. This Project is subject to compliance monitoring and enforcement by the DIR. BONDS - Each Bid must be accompanied by a cash deposit, cashier’s check, certified check, or Bidder’s Bond issued by a Surety insurer, made payable to the City and in an amount not less than ten percent (10%) of the total Bid submitted. Personal or company checks are not acceptable. Upon Contract award, the Contractor shall provide faithful performance and payment Bonds, each in a sum equal to the Contract Price. All Bonds must be issued by a California admitted Surety insurer using the forms set forth in the Contract Documents, or in any other form approved by the City Attorney. Failure to enter into the Contract with the City, including the submission of all required Bonds and insurance coverage, within fifteen (15) Days after the date of the mailing of written notice of contract award to the Bidder, shall subject the Bid security to forfeiture to the extent provided by law.

LICENSES - Each Bidder shall possess a valid Class “A” Contractor’s license issued by the California State Contractors License Board at the time of the Bid submission. The successful Contractor will be required to obtain a City business license.

RETENTION SUBSTITUTION - Five percent (5%) of any progress payment will be withheld as retention. In accordance with Public Contract Code Section 22300, and at the request and expense of the Contractor, securities equivalent to the amount withheld may be deposited with the City or with a State or federally chartered bank as escrow agent, which shall then pay such moneys to the Contractor.

Upon satisfactory completion of the Project, the securities shall be returned to the Contractor. Alternatively, the Contractor may request that the City make payments of earned retentions directly to an escrow agent at the Contractor’s expense. No such substitutions shall be accepted until all related documents are approved by the City Attorney.

TRADE NAMES OR EQUALS - Requests to substitute an equivalent item for a brand or trade name item must be made by written request submitted no later than fourteen days (14) Days before the Bid submission deadline. Requests received after this time shall not be considered. Requests shall clearly describe the product for which approval is requested, including all data necessary to demonstrate acceptability.

LIQUIDATED DAMAGES - Liquidated damages shall accrue in the amount of $2,500.00 for each Day that Work remains incomplete beyond the Project completion deadline specified in the Contract Documents.

Reader Responds to ‘Dia de la Independencia Mexicana’ Dear Editor, Mexicans, like Americans, come in different colors and despite their pigmentation are proud to be Mexican.

Yes, Don Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, the Caucasian priest who launched the war of independence against Spain on Sept. 16, 1810 is honored as the Father of the Mexican Republic.

Sadly, however, he was captured by the Spaniards and executed in 1811.

Although courageous and charismatic, Hidalgo lacked military acumen, which explains why his success was short-lived.

However, his successor Jose Maria Morelos (also a priest) who was half Black,

possessed an astonishing natural skill in leading the rebel army, which led to twelve decisive victories against Spain. And although he too was captured and executed on Dec. 22, 1815, his triumphs gathered enough momentum to gain Mexico’s independence in 1821.

Morelos’ hope for an independent Mexico was the abolition of slavery and the elimination of race and ethnic divisions. He also wanted to end the privileges of the church and the elites who oppressed the poor.

Morelos’ remains are buried in the Monument to Independence in Mexico City - a fitting resting place for such a great man.

he title of my column today may sound a bit confusing. It comes from one of my own mentors.

Years ago, when I was finishing graduate school in California, I spent a significant amount of time searching for the right job. I would go to job fairs and networking events as if it were my fulltime job. I would interview for anything and everything.

Occasionally, a job would pop up that would

seem almost right. It would have a great job description. The company seemed stable. The team seemed interesting. But, there was something about the hiring manager that was off – or perhaps the company wasn’t offering a competitive salary.

I would meet with my mentor to tell him about all of the jobs I was considering, and to discuss the pros and cons of each. If a job seemed like the wrong fit, he would encourage me to walk away. The thought of turning down an offer without another in hand

was nerve-racking. My mentor would then remind me, “Jobs are like buses. Just wait; another one is always coming.” The keyword here is always.

Arcadia Defeats Crescenta Valley to Kick Off Pacific League Action

Monrovia Water Polo Can’t Hold on Against Polytechnic

W

hile Monday’s preseason game between Monrovia and Polytechnic didn’t hold many league or playoff implications, the intense atmosphere made every spectator think otherwise.

The Wildcats held a 6-3 at the end of the third quarter but a shift in momentum helped the Panthers climb all the way back to take the game 7-6 in a triple overtime thriller.

“We made minor mistakes but nothing too drastic,” said Monrovia Head Coach Kris Williams. “We played seven quarters of hard water polo, really aggressive, really getting at it, and it just so happens that the other team got the winning goal first.”

Monrovia went into Monday’s game coming off a middle-of-the-road showing

at the Chino Hills Tournament over the weekend where the team went 2-2. Despite the Panthers striking first to go up 1-0, the Wildcats swiftly responded to level the game at the end of the first while going on to open 5-1 at the half.

Offensively, senior Grant Pierce was Monrovia’s main catalyst, scoring two goals within the first half while finishing the game with a total of three. Richie Martinez was also in the mix as he netted the goal to put Monrovia up 5-2.

In the third quarter, Monrovia and Polytechnic traded goals but it was clear as the water they swam in that the Panthers were not about to go down without a fight.

The turning point of the game came in the fourth when Polytechnic managed to lace in back-to-back goals within

a minute of each other to cut Monrovia’s lead to 6-5. This opened the floodgates for the Panthers as they fought tooth and nail to squeeze in the equalizer before the final buzzer.

Lo and behold, the Panthers were successful and managed to sneak in a goal to pull the game even right before the final buzzer.

During the extra periods, Monrovia and Polytechnic went back and forth in search of the game-winning goal.

Michael Mendoza – Monrovia’s backup goalie who was subbed on in the first half to replace the injured Johnny Mattox – had himself a game for the ages. The junior recorded seven total saves while making key saves in overtime to keep the Wildcats in the game.

Unfortunately for Monrovia, even that wasn’t enough to keep the Panthers at bay as they scored in triple overtime off a rebound that glanced off the post. This gave Polytechnic the win while Monrovia fell to a 9-5 record.

The Arcadia girls volleyball team is off and running in Pacific League play as it erased a 1-0 set deficit in its 3-1 win over the Crescenta Valley Falcons on Tuesday.

As dominant as the Apaches have been half way through the season, they are not perfect and suffered their first loss at the hands of Ontario Christian at last week’s Ayala Tournament.

Despite the small hiccup, Arcadia is right back on its feet and has started another win streak with this latest win over Crescenta Valley.

The visiting Falcons took it to Arcadia in the early goings of the match. It seemed Arcadia had no answers for Crescenta Valley’s high-flying offense as it dropped the first set 25-15.

Arcadia finds its groove later than usual to overcome a lackluster start in its 3-1 win over Crescenta Valley on Tuesday.

However, the Apaches bounced back in no time, taking the second set 25-9 and the third set 25-17. The fourth set featured a much tighter battle but the Apaches ultimately came out on top with

a 26-24 win.

Arcadia will continue its four-game home stand as it squares off with Pasadena on Thursday in hopes of staying atop the Pacific League standings.

Explosive First Half Propels Pasadena to League-Opening Victory After suffering a brutal 42-7 loss to San Marino in its first game of the season, the Bulldogs of Pasadena football have not looked back since.

The team is currently riding a three-game winning streak, including a 14-12 win over Maranatha, a 30-28 win over Pioneer and most recently a huge 48-7 win

over Glendale in their Pacific League opener.

Despite coming off its first season win last Friday, Glendale proved to be no match for a much more polished Pasadena squad that it hasn’t beat since 2013. The Bulldogs’ offense ran rampant on Glendale, exploding for 34 unanswered points in the first

half.

Quarterback Andrea Solling was the ringleader in Pasadena’s onslaught as he threw 11 of 16 for 188 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions. WB Jeremiah Hutchins also had himself a solid outing, meshing well with Solling while leading all receivers with four catches, 81 yards and two touchdowns.

However, the most notable play of the night arguably came from Mekhi Fox when he returned a Glendale punt for 60 yards.

The victory improved Pasadena’s overall record to 3-1, which is only one win behind Crescenta Valley (4-0) for best record in the Pacific League. Fittingly, Pasadena and Crescenta Valley will duke it out on Friday to decide who will retain sole possession of first place in the standings.
