ext Thursday, Aug. 16 the Pasadena Community Coalition in partnership with the Armenian Community Coalition, the League of United Latin American Citizens, and others will celebrate the diversity of the new President of the Tournament of Roses, who will be the very first African-American to hold the coveted title.

For many years, the Tournament of Roses has

been considered, by some in the Pasadena community, a rather exclusive club which paid little or no attention to diversity in the executive branch.

After public pressure and many meetings with several groups, the Tournament hired Terrence Roberts Consulting to help them address complaints from various public and private individuals, organizations, corporations, and municipalities that they were essentially a “whites only” organization. In their final regular meeting before students return to class, the Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) Board of Education unani-

mously approved a resolution that will authorize the potential exchange of the district’s headquarters at 351 S. Hudson Ave. The move is the latest in the district’s efforts to chip away at their financial chal-

lenges, which have been welldocumented over the past year and required millions of dollars in reductions through a fiscal stabilization plan.

How To Tell It’s Time To Do Something About Your Diabetes

Often times I’ll get someone come into my office who has diabetes and they’ll tell me, “I feel fine. I mean, yeah my blood sugar is a little high, but I don’t’ feel any different.”

That’s one of the biggest issues with Diabetes - you can’t feel the damage it’s doing to your body! It silently goes about destroying your capillaries without you taking any notice. And before you know it, you could be looking at black toes and talking with your doctor about amputation.

So, if you can’t feel the damage being done by Diabetes, how can you tell you need to do something about it?

The Best Way To Tell If You Need To Take Action Against Your Diabetes One the biggest mistakes you can make when you have Diabetes is not paying attention to seemingly unrelated warning signs.

I know of one women who ignored all of the early warning signs that her Diabetes was out of control and ended up having a heart attack!

Another common sign is blurry vision. If your eyes are constantly changing, needing new glasses every year, it can be a sign that you need to do something about your Diabetes.

Get Ready for Monrovia’s Voting Centers During the past few months, Monrovia’s Certified Municipal City Clerk Alice Atkins, has been working to keep tabs on a significant change to the way that the city coordinates elections. Given the magnitude of the change, the city has shared that beginning in 2020 Los Angeles County will be implementing Vote Centers to replace traditional polling places. Rather than coordinate elections in such a way where everyone votes at a polling center on Election Day, Vote Centers will allow individuals the ability to submit their ballot at any Vote Center LA County. In addition, Vote Centers will be opening up to 11 days in advance of the last day to vote.

Beginning in 2020, Monrovia will likely have around two Vote Centers, as opposed to the five election polling places the city typically coordi-

nates during elections. In addition, LA County has been working to simultaneously implement new voting equipment, which will include a combination of electronic voting mechanisms and a paper ballot.

This new voting technology includes the option to download a sample ballot to a smartphone, vote, and create a QR code that can be scanned at the Vote Center to speed up the voting process.

Fuller Youth Institute Receives Grant Money will be used to research character and virtue in young people The Fuller Youth Institute (FYI) was recently awarded a $234,797 grant from the John Templeton Foundation to help Christian congregations better instill in young people key virtues and components of character. As research into character and virtue development (or CVD) in adolescence continues to grow, the local congregation is often an untapped resource to help disseminate this work.

The Character and Virtue Development in Youth Ministry Planning Project (or CVDYM) seeks to help local congregations by providing relevant youth ministry resources to train young people in the development of character and virtues. Kara Powell, executive director of FYI, Brad Griffin, FYI director, and Tyler Greenway, FYI research director, will be leading the project.

The CVDYM Planning Project will identify three to eight virtues especially

DUI Checkpoint This Weekend in Pasadena The Pasadena Police Department Traffic Unit will be conducting a driving under the influence (DUI) and driver license checkpoint on Aug. 10 between the hours of 6 p.m. - 3 a.m.

In recent years, California has seen an increase in drugimpaired driving crashes.

Pasadena PD supports the new effort from the Office of Traffic Safety that aims to educate all drivers that “DUI Doesn’t Just Mean Booze.” If

you take prescription drugs, particularly those with a driving or operating machinery warning on the label, you might be impaired enough to get a DUI. Marijuana can also be impairing, especially in combination with alcohol or other drugs, and can result in a DUI. DUI checkpoints like this one are placed in locations based on collision statistics and frequency of DUI arrests, affording the greatest oppor-

tunity for achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence.

Locations are chosen with safety considerations for the officers and the public.

In California, alcohol involved collisions led to 1,155 deaths and nearly 24,000 serious injuries in 2014 because someone failed to designate a sober driver.

Pasadena Fire Arson Investigators Make Arrest 38-year-old local man suspected of torching Victorian home Terry MILLER tmiller@beaconmedianews.com

Pasadena fire units responded to a house fire at 30 W. Mountain St. on Aug. 1 at around 10:15 p.m. The fire was initially suspicious in nature.

Engine 36 was the first unit to arrive and reported a two story Victorian house with flames from the second story.

Engine 36 initiated a deck gun operation for a quick attack in front of structure (Alpha side). Engine 33 arrived and assisted with fire attack with a 2 ½-inch hand line down the driveway and exposure assessment. Engine 31 arrived and initiated fire attack on the Delta side of the structure alone with Rescue Ambulance 36. Truck 31 arrived on scene and setup a ladder pipe operation on the Alpha/Delta side.

Battalion 3 requested Verdugo Fire Communications Center (VFCC), and Urban Search and Rescue 32 (USAR32). Battalion 3 arrived on-scene and established command as Mountain I.C. Truck 32 arrived on scene

ARCADIA July 30 At approximately 10:02 a.m., an officer responded to Arcadia Methodist Hospital, 300 W. Huntington Drive, regarding a theft from vehicle report. Sometime during the previous evening, an unknown suspect entered the unlocked vehicle and stole the victim’s purse, bible, and cash. No suspects were seen and no witnesses were located.

July 31 Around 8:48 a.m., an officer responded to a residence under construction in the 400 block of North Altura Road regarding a burglary report.

An investigation revealed unknown suspect(s) climbed the scaffolding, entered the residence through an open second-story window, and fled with various tools and painting materials. No suspects were seen and no witnesses were located.

Just before 3:08 p.m., an officer responded to the 100 block of South First Avenue regarding a stolen vehicle report. The officer discovered a Toyota Prius had been stolen from the location when the victim ran into the store for a few minutes and left her car unlocked and running. No suspects were seen and no witnesses were located.

Aug. 1 At about 6:45 a.m., an officer responded to Extended Stay, 321 E. Huntington Drive, regarding a vandalism report.

The victim stated his rental vehicle had the window broken but no property had been stolen. No suspects were seen and no witnesses were located.

report. The officer determined an unknown suspect stole a golf cart from the location.

No suspects were seen and no witnesses were located.

Aug. 2 Before 7:07 a.m., officers responded to the 00 block of West Duarte Road regarding an activation of an Arcadia Police Department GPS tracker. Arcadia PD detectives had previously deployed decoy bicycles with tracking devices to combat the increase in bike thefts. An investigation revealed a 30-year-old male from Apple Valley was in possession of the stolen bicycle and GPS tracker. A records check revealed the suspect also had two outstanding misdemeanor warrants. The suspect was arrested.

The suspect is described as a Hispanic male, approximately 5-foot-6, 170 pounds, wearing a long sleeve shirt and basketball shorts. The suspect was seen fleeing in a white Honda Accord. The investigation is ongoing.

At 2:38 a.m., officers heard a vehicle collision in the 800 block of Monterey.

The officers responded to the area and found a car bumper next to an Edison pole that had fresh collision damage.

A check of the license plate attached to the bumper revealed the owner lived one block away. Officers went to the owner’s home, and located the driver who was heavily intoxicated. After contacting the driver, field tests were conducted and the driver was arrested for DUI and hit & run.

Aug. 3 Just before 3:35 p.m., an officer responded to Burger King, 28 Las Tunas Drive, regarding an activation of an Arcadia Police Department GPS tracker on a bicycle. The officer discovered the suspect used bolt cutters to cut the lock and steal the bicycle.

He also admitted to being in possession of a concealed fixed blade knife and claimed ownership of a meth pipe. The 38-year-old male from Huntington Park was arrested .

Aug. 4 Shortly after 12:54 a.m., officers responded to an injury traffic collision between two vehicles near the intersection of West Foothill Boulevard and North Santa Anita Avenue. Upon contacting one of the drivers, the officer detected a strong odor of alcohol emitting from her breath. A series of tests confirmed the suspect, a 44-year-old female from San Bernardino, had a blood alcohol content of .22 percent. She was arrested and transported to the Arca-

At 10:43 a.m., officers responded to a call in the 700 block of West Huntington regarding a possible fraud. The hotel’s previous customers were contesting $4,000 worth of charges denying they ever stayed in the hotel. The hotel advised officers that after looking further into this customer’s history with them, it was discovered they had been using other people’s reward points to receive free hotel stays. This investigation is continuing.

Aug. 1

At 1:38 a.m., an officer was patrolling the 200 block of North Grand when he saw a subject he recognized from previous contacts. A computer check revealed the subject had warrants for his arrest. The subject was in possession of a pipe that had been used to smoke methamphetamine.

At 8:59 p.m., a resident in the 600 block of East Colorado reported she had just been in a physical fight with her two adult children. Officers responded and discovered all three subjects had hit one another and demanded prosecution. This incident will be forwarded to the district attorney for resolution.

July 29 At 1:21 a.m., a caller reported hearing yelling inside a house in the 500 block of West Lemon. Officers re-

Shortly thereafter, she received a call from her credit card company reporting fraudulent use of her card. The suspect had purchased almost $2,000 worth of merchandise at a business in Arcadia. This investigation is continuing.

July 31 At 4:53 a.m., a caller reported a male subject bleeding in the courtyard to an apartment complex in the 800 block of West Duarte.

At 3:48 p.m., a resident in the 700 block of South Myrtle walked to his Jeep, which was parked in his apartment complex’s parking structure, and discovered someone had stolen the overhead light bar from the vehicle. This investigation is continuing.

SIERRA MADRE July 30 At about 10:18 a.m., of-

ficers responded to a noninjury accident, involving a vehicle and a parked unoccupied vehicle in the 400 block of East Sierra Madre Blvd.

The driver was cited for driving with a suspended driver’s license and released. The vehicle was towed away.

July 31 At 6:23 p.m. officers responded to a disturbance call in the 00 block of East Sierra Madre Boulevard. Officers made contact with the female subject who had a mental illness. The female subject was placed on a 72-hour hold and was transported to a local hospital for further evaluation.

Sometime between July 30 at 8 p.m. and July 31 at 7 a.m., an unknown suspect(s) damaged the paint, dented the doors, and slashed the front tires of the victim’s vehicle. The vehicle was parked in the 100 block of North Canon near the intersection of Laurel Avenue and Canon.

Case went to detectives for follow-up.

Aug. 3 At 11:57 p.m. an officer stopped a vehicle in the 100 block of East Sierra Madre where the driver of the vehicle was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage following a series of field sobriety tests. The driver was arrested and transported to the Pasadena Jail where he was later released on a citation. Case referred to the Pasadena DA’s office.

Eva Lueck, interim chief business officer, who presented the resolution to the board, was happy to finally be discussing what could be a very positive item for the PUSD, “I am very pleased tonight … [to be] talking about another revenue source … rather than my budget cuts that I normally talk about.”

With the board’s approval, the district will now issue a request for proposals (RFP) through their realtor Sam Manoukian from RE/MAX Optima.

According to staff’s report, the district property (which will be offered “as-is”) may be exchanged for another property of similar value or a combination of multiple properties, all of which must be within a 25-mile radius of 351 S. Hudson Ave. The PUSD will only be allowed to trade with private persons or private business firms, no

t’s been a thrilling few weeks for Pasadena author Bree Barton as she embarks on a tour to unveil “Heart of Thorns,” the first book in the trilogy. Geared for young adult readers, it’s a feminist fantasy book set in a dark kingdom where only women have magical powers.

Beaming with pride, Barton says, “Most girls envision their wedding as their ‘day’ but, for me, this book debut is my ‘day.’ I have dreamed of this since I was a child and it’s difficult to grasp that it’s actually here!

This is my first published book but it isn’t my first fantasy story; that distinction belongs to ‘The SnogPig-Mouse,’ which I wrote when I was eight years old.”

“Young Adult (YA) books are read by people who are in their 20s and 30s, and that’s my hope for ‘Heart of Thorns.’ It is really about diversity, acceptance, and women being in control.

It’s women breaking free of years of persecution, misogyny, and a false belief that has been hard-wired in their brains.

“This tribe of women, called Gwyrach, has been made to think their powers are evil until the protagonist, Mia Rose, found out it can be used to heal. That made her realize that her power can be an instrument for good. It was fun to create a young protagonist because everything’s a new experience, it’s all about ‘firsts,’ which provides for a satisfying character arc.

My sister’s 18, she graduated from high school, and is at the cusp of adulthood.

that signifies the loss of their childhood and it’s never coming back. While they have so much to look forward to, they also are leaving so much behind.

She’s the reason I write YA.” Women figure prominently in Barton’s world because she was raised by a single mother. Her family background and childhood memories provided considerable inspiration.

Barton clarifies, “While the idea for ‘Heart of Thorns’ began many years ago, it was really the Trump win in the 2016 elections, when we all thought we were going to have a woman president, that was the impetus for this. I want women to realize that we are stronger because of it, not in spite of it.

And storytelling can be

a source of healing. There is so much violence and gore in the book but, at the same time, there are many funny moments between Mia and Prince Quin. I want readers to find it engaging and interesting.”

While Barton may have written “Heart of Thorns” with her family in mind, we all are the beneficiaries of her creative work. Mia Rose’s triumph is an inspiration, a call to arms, for womankind.

That Barton accomplishes that with a healthy dose of humor is testament to her ingenuity, maturity, and skill as a writer. She has come a long way since “The Snog-Pig-Mouse” days but, happily for us, her eightyear-old self’s sense of fantasy and vivid imagination never left.

AUSD Partners With USC Annenberg Youth Academy Through Arcadia Unified School District’s (AUSD) Digital Communications Internship (DCI) program, the district has been fortunate to partner with USC's Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism and its Youth Academy (AYA) summer program.

The past two summers, four Arcadia High School students were accepted into this prestigious program at USC. You can see them in the video titled “Creating Leaders in our Neighborhood: The USC Annenberg Youth Academy” on the USC Annenberg YouTube channel. s time passes and trends change, words and their meaning also change. Every generation has come to develop their own special language and millennials are no different. They have created their own special way of speaking to others with a language consisting of the most odd sounding words and phrases.

While it can often be difficult to keep up with the latest lingo, all it really takes is a careful ear and the right amount of attention to come to a vague understanding of what millennials could possibly be talking about.

Below is a list of words and phrases commonly used by millennials and how they would use it in conversation, according to Dictionary.com : - “Extra”: Extra is the level above “too much.”

It’s hyperbole personified: melodrama, glitz, and extravagance all rolled into one. For instance, “Rachel is so extra coming to school in heels and Coach purse.”

- “Feels”: Feels are feelings but on another level. For example, “The iconic kiss in ‘The Notebook’

gave all the girls feels.”

- “Goals”: Goals is pretty much what it sounds like.

When you see someone or something out in the world that represents the kind of life you aspire to, that thing is goals. For instance, “Watching how cute my grandparents are together is serious relationship goals.”

- “High Key”: High key, as you’ve probably guessed, is the exact opposite low key. If you high key love something, you’re openly and unabashedly excited about it. For example, “McDonald’s chicken McNuggets are high key my guilty pleasure.”

- “Lit”: Lit can describe a situation or event that’s extremely cool, exciting, or crazy. For example, “That party last night was so lit.”

- “Low Key”: Low key generally means “of reduced intensity, restrained, or understated.” For instance, “Veronica low key likes classical music although she tells everyone she likes K-Pop.” - “Shook”: I'm shook can be a way of saying you're "shaken up," in a good way or a bad way. It can mean you're confused, flabbergasted, or surprised by something. It can also mean you're agitated or disturbed mentally or physically. For example, “The amount of

material in the final study guide had the students shook.”

- “Woke”: A woke person is considered politically active, aware of racial tensions, the prison industrial complex, consumerism, gender fluidity, and the impact of socioeconomic disparity on minorities.

Critics have suggested that some of those who represent themselves as woke are sometimes more concerned with making a statement on social media than engaging in “real-life” activism. For instance, “Angie considered herself woke after learning about the #metoo movement.”

It can be difficult to keep up with the changing terminology and the way people communicate with each other. Previous meanings for a word or phrase can change into something completely different.

While millennials have a unique and odd way of speaking, hopefully this guide has not shook you too much and you are now ready to have a lit conversation.

hurro Garage co-owner Elizabeth Garcia was in a flurry of prep work when she paused for a half an hour to talk about the pop-up business she launched last year with her husband Chris.

“I’ve always wanted to do something different. I was an executive assistant working nine to five, stuck in offices and corporate settings,” she said. “Then one day, my mom came to me with an idea.”

The idea was simple: sell 100 percent fresh, gourmet churros with all-natural sauces. With Elizabeth in the corporate world and Chris working as a mechanic, neither had a lot of experience making the sweet treat. Still, the lure of finally operating their own business was strong.

“We knew it was possible with the help of my mom, Sylvia. She’s pretty much a chef and can cook anything.

With my husband as a welder and mechanic, he can build anything. I understood the admin side, obtaining permits, etc.,” Garcia explained. “It took us about three months to

recently took a vacation out in Maui. Coincidently, one of my clients happened to also book a trip there on the same week.

Before he left for his trip he told me, “don’t worry, I won’t eat too much while I’m there.”

His reassurance caught me off guard.

He had been working hard towards his goal of weight loss for about two months at this point and saw amazing results right away. With all the excitement of newfound progress in his life, he was reluctant to let this vacation get in the way of his results. But that didn’t sit well with me.

My personal goal that I set for my clients has always been the same - to instill sustainable lifestyle skills that will benefit my clients for months and years after the program is completed.

illiam Randolph Hearst knew how to throw a party. When he wanted company, he would fly friends to his estate on private planes, land them at his airport, and then transport them to the top of his mountain estate in luxury cars. Of course, friends such as Howard Hughes Amelia Earhart, and Charles Lindbergh flew themselves in.

To cool off from the summer heat, a couple friends

California History and Opulence at Hearst Castle and I headed down the California coast to the Hearst’s famed residence, which overlooks the Pacific Ocean in idyllic San Simeon. I hadn’t been to the castle in about 10 years, so I was eager to see if anything changed.

Built between 1919 and 1947, the Hearst Castle was the most lavish mansion in the country in its heyday. It covers 127 acres of rolling hills and is highlighted by 56 bedrooms, 41 fireplaces, and 61 bathrooms scattered throughout four main buildings.

The grounds are covered

with countless pieces of priceless art and statues from around the world, as well as two swimming pools – one with real gold trim, the other surrounded by Roman statues.

“This is probably the way God would have done it, if He had the money,” is what playwright George Bernard Shaw was rumored to say after his first visit to the castle.

Where the Food Takes You to the Top of the Hill @TimAroundLA

like driving to the top of a hill; the horizon comes ever closer and one never knows what to expect at the end of such journey.

This time however, I kind of had an idea: Castaway has a reputation as one of Burbank's finest dining experiences, and today I was excited for it to nourish and delight yours truly.

The sun was on its way down, and a gentle breeze

was flowing through the canyon after a long 99 degrees Fahrenheit day.

"Hi Tim, we've been expecting you, welcome!

Would you like to sit inside or outside?"

This restaurant is inspired by the 2000 movie Castaway, in which Tom Hanks' plane crashes in the ocean and then he shipwrecks onto an uninhabited island in the Pacific.

The spacious wooden interior, the subtle art on the wall reminiscent of island life, the stylish use of glass:

if I would have to shipwreck somewhere, I wouldn't mind having this place close by.

"I'd like to sit in that booth, next to the window please."

It was still warm outside.

In Southern California, the majestic sun doesn't rest until the stars push her out of the sky.

With a glass of champagne in my hand, I was overlooking the San Fernando Valley and the downtown Los Angeles skyscrapers in the back. I was checking out

the menu and decided to try the Cheese and Charcuterie Bar which would come wellloaded with sparkling treats from all over Europe. My favorites ended up being the Culatello di Zibello, aka ‘little ass,’ from Italy and the Rulo de Cabra, goat cheese from Spain.

Then after careful consideration I was ready to choose the piece of meat I was going to devour. (I'm part-time vegan, but when some of nature's best flavors are on the menu, I’m not in any

position to limit myself.)

My server Brianna returned to me and requested a moment for her suggestions.

I'm not one to be stubborn (don't ask my ex-wife!), so I'd give almost anything a try.

Brianna however appeared to be a mind reader and recommended the exact dishes I was considering. We decided that I would have the zabuton, from Snake River Farms, and the supporting cast was going to be the classic potato puree with chives and the asparagus

with salsa verde.

As the food comes....

The zabuton, medium rare when I have the chance and sliced in four, had a gorgeous color palette from dark browns to deep reds, and a taste that reminds me why I'm not a 100 percent plant-based eater.

Ghosting - The Dating Phenomenon Hitting the Job Search World

he number of companies reporting job search candidates “ghosting” them is on the rise. Ghosting is a term typically used in dating. It happens when you’ve been dating and one person stops responding to all communication with no reasons as to why. They may suddenly stop returning calls, texts, or emails. It’s as if they disappear.

In the past, companies did this to candidates without thinking about it. The job seeker would put in many hours for interviews and preparation then the company would decide it wasn’t a good fit and would drop the candidate.

What goes around comes around it seems. Now that the job market is improving, candidates are dishing this same approach back at employers. Companies are reporting that job seekers are bailing on scheduled interviews and, after accepting job offers, they aren’t showing up to their first day. Some companies are reporting that existing employees are quitting with no notice. They just don’t come back.

One NBC report estimated that 20 to 50 percent of job applicants and workers are ghosting their employers. So, what’s a company to do about this? The job market is tight, and companies still need to hire.

First and foremost, treat those you’re interviewing the way you’d want to be treated: with respect. Proactive job searching is hard. It’s an emotionally painful process.

If you’ve ever been without a job, you know how it feels.

Be transparent. If you already have someone in mind to hire, don’t lead a candidate on needlessly. If you are putting the position on hold, tell them. If the candidate isn’t the right fit, let them know and if you aren’t sure when you plan to call them back, be honest.

Last, you’re building a relationship with everyone you interview. Just because they’re not a good fit for this job doesn’t mean they won’t be a fit for a job in the future and they may know someone who is a fit. If you work to build a relationship with each person, even if it’s just as a LinkedIn connection, you’ll increase the chances of being a company that people want to work for.

I speak to executives every day who are looking for a new job. They’re shocked at how long it can take. They can’t believe how hard the rejection can be and they are often completely unprepared for how out of control they feel through the process. It can be like driving a car that has no brakes.

If you’re a company that’s experiencing candidate ghosting, it’s time to look in the mirror. Are you the kind of place where employees want to work? How do you treat the candidates you interview?

My condolences to the family of Pam Fitzpatrick, the community of Monrovia has lost the "Voice of Myrtle."

Pam always kept the community informed about the various business changes taking place in Old Town Monrovia.

Despite the fiasco of the 2003 election, Pam took the high ground and endorsed Becky Shevlin for City Council seat.

Pam attended City Council meetings voicing her concerns and updating the community on what was going on in Old Town Monrovia and when not attending City Council meetings, her voice could be found in The Monrovia Old Town Report in Monrovia Weekly.

What tribute will the

Old Town Merchants come [up] with for that very special voice?

I can still hear Pam’s voice saying "Come down to Old Town Monrovia there [is] a lot going on.”

I suggest Council honors Pam’s memory by draping a black cloth over her favorite chair at the next council meeting.

PROJECT LOCATION: Santa Anita Park (SAP) is located at 285 W. Huntington Drive, Arcadia, California 91007 (APN 5775-001021, 5775-001-030, 5775-001-031). Regional access to SAP is provided by Interstate 210 (I-210), approximately 0.25 mile to the north of the project site. The project site is on the north parking lot located in the northeast portion of the existing 304-acre SAP, which is bounded generally by residential uses to the north, Colorado Place to the northeast, Huntington Drive to the southeast and south, Gate 8 (providing access to Westfield Santa Anita) to the southwest, and Baldwin Avenue and the Arboretum of Los Angeles County to the west. The 36-acre project site is bounded

by Colorado Place to the east, and Santa Anita Park race track facilities to the south, southwest, and northwest. Access to the project site is provided via a driveway on Colorado Place.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: SAP proposes to expand horse stabling and ancillary services on the 36acre North Parking Lot, off of Colorado Place between Gates 5 and 6. The development would be comprised of 9 canopy-style barn structures which would house up to 816 stalls for horses, 70 tack and 70 feed storage bins, 36 office spaces, an employee café and recreation area, and a two-story 27,360square-foot grooms’ building housing 104 dormitory units. Also included is a 14,450 square foot covered manure transfer facility. Draft application materials describing the project are available at the City of Arcadia Planning Division (address below).

Suspect Arrested in Apartment Rental Scam Glendale Police Detectives are requesting the public’s assistance with locating additional victims of theft by false pretenses involving an apartment rental scam.

Between June 8, 2018 and June 15, 2018, Wail Balkhi met with at least eight victims who answered online ads for an apartment listing in the 100 block of West Wilson in the City of Glendale. During these meetings, Balkhi directed the victims to complete rental paperwork and sometimes gave tours of the apartment. Balkhi collected funds from these victims under the guise of collecting a security deposit and/ or first month’s rent. After collecting the funds, Balkhi ceased communicating with his victims and never returned their funds. Balkhi was evicted from his apartment days later.

The case was presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office and four counts of grand theft by false pretenses was filed. An arrest warrant

was subsequently issued for Balkhi’s arrest and on August 1, 2018, Balkhi was apprehended by the US Marshals Task Force.

Balkhi was booked into the Glendale PD Jail; his bail was set at $250,000.00.

Hollywood Bowl Recognized for Environmental Excellence The Hollywood Bowl has retained its designation as a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary through the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program (ACSP), an Audubon International program.

Participation is designed to help property managers plan, organize, implement, and document a comprehensive environmental management program and receive recognition for their efforts.

To reach certification, a property must demonstrate that they are maintaining a high degree of environmental quality in a number of areas including: Environmental Planning, Wildlife & Habitat Management, Outreach and Education, Water, and Resource Management. The Hollywood Bowl was designated as a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary in 2010. After designation, properties go through a recertification process every three years.

“The Hollywood Bowl has shown a strong commitment to its environmental program. They are to be commended for their efforts to provide a sanctuary for wildlife,” said Christine Kane, Executive Director at Audubon International.

“The Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program benefits both people and wildlife,” said Kane. “It’s a great way for businesses and environmental organizations to work together to become better stewards of the land and natural resources.”

By participating in the ACSP, the Hollywood Bowl has been involved in projects that enhance habitat for wildlife and preserve natural resources for the benefit of the local community. These projects include conserving energy and reducing waste, utilizing integrated pest management techniques, naturalizing areas, and managing resources in an environmentally responsible manner.

red Gustavo Montoya, 86, was born on March 20, 1932. Born and raised in Pasadena, Fred Montoya passed away Aug. 1, 2018 in Los Angles.

Married twice, Fred served in the Korean War on the front lines’ Infantry - from November 17, 1952 until he was discharged Oct. 9, 1954.

Fred battled with some serious health issues later in life, primarily kidney issues which required regular dialysis for 13 years and then toward the end of his life dementia took its toll. He was by all accounts a quiet, soft-spoken, and passionate family man who devoted his life to his immediate and extended family and enjoyed spending quality time with all his children and grandchildren – especially watching boxing, of which he was an avid fan. The family would get together regularly to watch matches on television.

At last count, Fred had 31 grandchildren and 21 greatgrandchildren as well as one great-grand-child. Fred was

one of eight children and by pure coincidence Fred ended up with eight children of his own: six with his first wife and two more with his second wife, Juanita.

His daughter Gale recounts that he had this unusual and unique sense of humor that would come into a conversation when you’d least expected it.

Fred worked as a Water Pool Operator at McKnight Construction for 35 years.

His passions, aside from family, were music (especially 1960s – ‘80s), boxing, and tinkering with automobiles.

He resided in Los Angeles at the time of his passing.

Arrangements are under the direction of Douglass & Zook Funeral and Cremation Services, Monrovia.

Fred’s four brothers are Rudy, Arthur, Raul and Steve.

(Rudy and Sally are still with us.) He also had three sisters, Sally Rita and Josephine.

Fred’s biological children are: Alfred, Leon, Gale, Laura, Donna, and Julie. Fred’s second wife Jenny’s children are: Michelle and Jaime.

Michelle's children: Rachelle and Joaquin. Jaime's children: Crystal, Nicholas, Jazmine, Lexine, and Adrian (great grandchild).

Mass will be at Holy Angeles Church (370 Campus Drive, Arcadia) on Aug. 9 at 11 a.m.

Burial will be at Live Oak Cemetery (200 E. Duarte Rd., Monrovia) on Aug. 9 at 1:30 p.m. in Monrovia.

Monrovia Cheer Gets into Formation for New Season On the surface, the sport of cheerleading can seem pretty straightforward as the cheerleaders perform routines to pump up the crowd and motivate their teams from the sidelines.

However, once you take a look behind the scenes, you’ll quickly notice that cheerleading is as grueling as any other sport and Monrovia’s newly hired head coach Candice Hicks is ready to tackle the new season with the rest of the Wildcats.

“Cheerleading is challenging athletically and emotionally and physically and just all around,” Hicks said. “There’s an adrenaline that you get right before you walk on stage and it’s in that moment nothing else matters.”

training at least two hours a day, sharpening their skills and rearranging routines. Hicks’ main goal this season is to not only qualify for USA Nationals – one of most prestigious competitions for high school cheer – but finish within the top five.

And while the Wildcats

do have a long road ahead of them, Hicks believes her team can accomplish anything as long as they remain patient and focus on their goals.

“The key to success this season is trust,” Hicks said. “Trust the process, trust the journey and don’t try to fight it.”

Pasadena’s Lancers Look to Dig Deep for CIF Glory

t was not too long ago when the La Salle girls’ volleyball team put together an uninspired season in 2015.

The Lancers won only 11 of 29 games while getting bounced out in the first round of CIF. However, the team quickly worked their way back to powerhouse stature over the following two seasons with the help of longtime Head Coach Tiare Tuitama.

In 2017, La Salle went 28-7 overall and was undefeated in the Del Rey League at 8-0. The Lancers then moved on to the postseason where they were on the brink of winning a CIF-SS title and CIF State title until they were trounced by Sierra

Canyon on both occasions.

Skip ahead to this season where Tuitama – who received Coach of the Year honors from a local newspaper in 2017 – has stepped down as head coach and will be succeeded by former South Pasadena coach Shari Iwatani.

“I am very proud to be a part of a school that has a great reputation for core values and a winning volleyball tradition,” Iwatani said in a press release.

Despite inheriting the responsibility of guiding an already developed program, Iwatani is no stranger to such tall tasks. Along with steering the Tigers’ ship at South Pasadena, she has also

been a coach at one of the region’s most prestigious volleyball clubs in SGV Elite.

The Lancers have a daunting road ahead of them as their schedule is littered with tough games, including a marquee match-up against defending CIF champion Sierra Canyon on Aug. 28.

The season opener lands on Wednesday as the Lancers hit the road to take on San Marino.

Del Rey League action will begin Sept. 11 with a home contest against St. Paul.

La Salle will also be without key outside hitters Sofia Sanchez and Claire Forrest due to graduation.

The duo combined for 875 kills and 129 solo blocks in 2017.
