n Tuesday morning Monrovia awoke to the news that one of the true treasures of Monrovia, Pam Fitzpatrick, passed away from complications of throat cancer.

In addition to having four children, she has three sisters,

one of whom, Nancy, predeceased Pam as did her brother Jim. Pam’s many accomplishments are legendary to the city and Old Town in particular, to which she devoted her life’s work.

Are You Making These Mistakes With Your Diabetes?

of 3 months, you know that you’re blood sugar drops around 2:00pm, you can be prepared for when you aren’t in your normal enviroment.

If you wanted to take this one step further, you could write down what you eat along with your test numbers - that way you start to get a better idea of how your body responses to the food you eat.

Which leads us to mistake #2...

Mistake #2: Avoiding Carbs Altogether Alright, time for from Dr. Tamika straight talk: not all carbs are bad for you! In fact, there are some carbs, like Barley, can actually help stablize your blood sugar levels for hours after eating them.

However, don’t take this to mean that you can chow down on just any carb. No, you need to become familiar with the Glycemic Index, a website that lists the Glycemic Index of most food stuffs so you can determine is something is going to throw off your blood sugar or not.

You know, they say life doesn’t come with a manual.

And while that’s true, I think it is one of the greatest frustations on the part of the general public that diseases don’t come with manuals either!

If you’re suffering from high blood pressure, hormone imbalance, or even diabetes, you have to rely on your doctor to give you the best instructions on how to deal with that issue - there is no Diabetes For Dummies that can help you with all of the different ascepts of your disease because you are unique and so, your issues are going to be unique as well.

That said, I have found that there are some common mistakes, or missteps, that a lot of diabetics make that could help lessen their symptoms. So today I want to go over a few of them with you and give you so tips on how to avoid them.

Mistake #1: Not Keeping A Blood Sugar Log This is the biggest mistake most patients make - or the even bigger one of thinking they can fudge the numbers.

Listen, there is a reason why you need to be testing your blood sugar twice a day. Your doctor needs to know the trends you experience so they can adjust your treatment. If you aren’t keeping a log and are just making it up, you have a ever low chance of actually having your treatment plan work.

Oh, and about fudging the numbers, your A1C will tell your doctor what your average blood sugar level has been over the past 3 months, so they’ll know something is off.

But beyond keeping a log for your doctor benefit, it’s also important for you to know. If, over the course

Mistake #3: Not Pairing A Carb With A Protein Again, this has to deal with the types of food you are eating but any carb, when eating alone, is going to convert into sugar much faster than if you eat with a protein. So make sure that you consume your carbs with some form of protein in order to slow down the conversion process.

One of my favorite snacks I tell patients to eat is Apple Slices and Cashew Butter - not only is it tastier than peanut butter but it also tends to have less “filler” ingredients. Go organic if you can, that would be every better.

Mistake #4: Skipping A Meal DON’T DO THIS! Even for a someone with diabetes, skipping a meal is a bad idea but for if you have diabetes, you are going to throw off your entire day but not eating at the right time.

You need to make sure that you are eating small, regular meals through out the day. I know some of patients think this is a pain - there is too much to do in the day for them to be taking breaks every 3-4 hours to eat something. But trust me, getting on a regular eating schedule is one of the best things you can do to lessen symptoms and to help you lose weight!

That’s right, eating smaller meals more frequently can actually help you lose weight because you will keep your metabolism going. That will level out your blood sugar levels as well as burn fat.

It’s not an excuse to skip execrise but over time, sticking to a regular eating schedule can help you ditch the extra weight and keep you feeling alert without that sugar crash that so often follows meal time for diabetics.

Mistake #5: Not Execrising You knew I was going to bring this up - execrise is a huge part of keeping your diabetes in check. BUT, the good news is that you don’t have to spend hours at the gym.

The best exercise for diabetics is actually HITT execrises - or High-intensity interval training. Here’s just a sample workout for you to see how it works: First: get the okay from your doctor. Anyone with a health condition, including diabetes, should

get clearance from his or her medical provider before diving into a high intensity program.

Build a base. Get your cardio fitness and muscular endurance up by performing aerobic exercise (walking, walk/jog, stationary bike, swimming) at least three days per week and strength train twice weekly.

Go gradually. When you first start intervals, ease in. Take off on a walking route that has a hill you can climb a few times. Then, pick up the walking pace for 30 seconds. Next, increase to a jog. This will help you progress nicely. You can also do intervals on a stationary bike, treadmill, elliptical, or in the pool.

Time the interval. Now that you’re ready for higher intensity intervals, you should push yourself out of your comfort zone for 30 to 60 seconds. This should feel like a level of 7 to 8 on an exertion scale (one being lying on the couch; 10 being you can’t go any harder), advises Little. This will look different for everyone. It may look like a slow jog for some and a sprint for others. It all depends on your fitness level.

Rest right. You need to catch your breath, but you don’t want to stand still. Try a slow walk if you’ve been speed walking or running; walk on flat ground if you’ve been hoofing it uphill; pedal slowly on a bike or elliptical; or tread water if you’re in the pool.

In the beginning, your break might be three to four times longer than the “on” interval, says Little. As you progress, you’ll likely be able to alternate one minute of high intensity with one minute of recovery time. Complete four to five rounds of pickup and rest.

More than 12,000 firefighters remain on the lines of 17 large wildfires burning across California. To date, these fires have burned almost 240,000 acres and damaged or destroyed over 1,000 structures. An additional 25,000 homes continue to be threatened by these fires, and more than 52,000 residents have been evacuated.

Firefighters Monrovia, Arcadia, and Pasadena have been called to assist their fellow brothers and sisters in attacking these terrible fires that have already claimed six lives.

above 90 F. Southern California temperatures will remain above normal, with potential for isolated thunderstorms in some parts of the region.

As of Aug. 1 the Carr Fire in Shasta County has burned 115,538 acres and is 35 percent contained.

It has destroyed 1,018 residences, 12 commercial structures, 435 outbuildings and damaged 181 residences, six commercial structures, and 61 outbuildings damaged. There remain 2,546 structures threatened. Evacuations and road closures remain in place.

City of Sierra Madre Reduces CalPERS Pension Obligations by 42% CalPERS pension obligations have increased dramatically for local governments in California in recent years. The rapid growth in unfunded pension liabilities has caused many local governments to increase taxes or slash services which are vital to communities. Sierra Madre has chosen a more responsible path to managing its pension obligations, by reducing government spending, while protecting core municipal services.

Sierra Madre used a large one-time payment to CalPERS which resulted in $7 million in savings.

When combined with the establishment of an investment fund aimed at the stabilization of pension obligations, Sierra Madre was able to reduce its overall pension payment and liability by more than 40%.

These are the foundation of the City’s prudent financial management strategy referred to as Pension Stabilization.

“In Sierra Madre, unlike many other municipalities, we focused on solving the pension crisis without asking tax payers for additional funding.” Explained City Manager Gabe Engeland at this past Tuesdays July 24th City Council Meeting.

“Instead, we reduced spending, while protecting services, and addressed our pension obligations through a mix of additional payments and changes to our investment strategy.”

This approach has stabilized and reduced the City’s CalPERS obligation by 42% ($12M) saving $7 million over the amortization period, an annual operational savings of more than $300,000.

Learn About Herbalism in an Introductory Class in Arcadia An introductory class for all who are interested in learning about the folkloric and traditional use of plants as medicine will be held on Saturday, Aug. 18 at the Arboretum from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

In discussion with instructor Irena Stathis, the class will explore the topics of sustainability, quality, practical application, and forms of extraction. Participants will get to know some of Stathis’ favorite plants through their senses, by touch, taste, smell, and an inner listening.

Historically, humans

have always lived deeply connected with their environment and the plants and other beings that inhabit it.

These interwoven relationships developed over time and traditional practices were passed down orally and through actual experience to future generations.

There are two aspects or lines of knowledge of herbalism. The first encompasses the wisdom of nurturers, crafters, and elders who provide a basis of healthful living for their families and communities through the use of plants in food, crafts, and daily rituals. The second

one is that of the healer or shaman who deals with the mystical, hidden, and magic realm of healing with plants. In some traditions, knowledge is transmitted by means of story, some through experimentation, and others through a direct receiving in dreams or visions from the plants themselves.

In this class, participants will draw from both lines, blending the tangible with the intuitive in their approach. Participants will discover a variety of ways to include herbs in their daily lives and will leave with an

informed confidence to do so.

The class is $25 for Arboretum members, and $35 for non-members (includes

Arboretum admission).

With students’ lives paramount on local school districts’ minds, Monrovia School District is one district getting a supply of new school buses and they will be equipped with seatbelts.

First day of school is Aug. 15, at least in Monrovia.

For the first time, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is recommending all new school buses be equipped with lap and shoulder seat belts, after the agency released findings from a special investigation report prompted by two deadly 2016 crashes.

"I feel like we've always tiptoed around this issue of seat belt usage and lap [and] shoulder belts in school buses," said NTSB Board Chairman Robert L. Sumwalt. "The last recommendation we made on this was in 2013 coming out of a crash in Chesterfield, N.J.,

that occurred in February of 2012. And it was a recommendation which is sort of weak in my opinion," according to an ABC News report published May 23 on the growing number of bus accidents.

California law now requires three-point seat belts on (1) school buses manufactured on and after July 1, 2005 that carry more than 16 passengers and (2) all other school buses manufactured on and after July 1, 2004. It requires school transportation providers, when feasible, to

give priority to elementary school students when allocating seat-belt equipped school buses. Under the law, the state cannot charge any person, school district, or organization with violating this law if a passenger either does not fasten his or her seat belt, or does so improperly (Cal. Veh. Code § 27316).

State regulations require school bus passengers to (1) use the seat belts and (2) be taught how to use them in an age-appropriate manner (Cal. Code Regs. Title 5, § 14105).

oland, Richard, and Rebecca were all born and raised in Monrovia. Roland graduated from Monrovia High in 1959, Richard in 1973, and Rebecca’s diploma is fresh off the press. All three came together at the recent Monrovia Latino Heritage Society’s scholarship luncheon.

The Monrovia Latino Heritage Society was founded in 2010 by a group who grew up in the racially-segregated neighborhood near Huntington School (now MUSD head-

quarters) in the 1940-50s. The mission of this nonprofit is to bring awareness to Monrovia’s ethnic diversity. The club works hard all year to fundraise for six scholarships for deserving high schoolers.

Roland Garcia, now 76, said, “I was born on my Nana Lucinda’s bed on Almond. In that compound, there were about 15 of us who were all related. The swimming pool for us kids was this old tub in the yard. Since our days in the Monrovia Plunge pool were racially restricted, on hot summer days we would cool off with a water hose tied up high on the laundry line.” Such shared memories of Monrovia

keep the members going to meetings and volunteering.

Roland said to 18-year old Rebecca and her fellow-recipient Ishika Mucchal, “This is my dad’s advice: Whatever you do, do the best you can.

The boss can’t ask you to do more. My dad said, ‘You and your brother aren’t that good looking and there’s prejudice.

So, if they want eight hours from you, do 8 ½.’”

Rebecca de la O is no stranger to hard work. She ranked No. two out of her graduating class of 435.

ARCADIA July 22 Shortly before 3:07 a.m., an officer responded to 24 Hour Fitness, 125 North First Avenue, regarding a vehicle burglary report. An investigation revealed an unknown suspect smashed the front passenger window and stole the victim’s backpack and wallet. No suspects were seen and no witnesses were located.

July 23 Just after 12:21 a.m., an officer responded to the intersection of Huntington Drive and Holly Avenue regarding an injury traffic collision between two vehicles. Upon contacting one of the drivers, the officer detected a strong odor of alcohol. A series of tests revealed the driver had a blood alcohol content of .15%. The driver of the other vehicle sustained mild injuries. The 24-year-old male from Maywood was arrested .

July 24 At about 1:00 p.m., an officer responded to a residence in the 300 block of West Camino Real Avenue regarding a burglary report. The officer discovered the suspect(s) smashed the rear window sometime between July 3rd and July 24th and fled with an unknown amount of property.

No suspects were seen and no witnesses were located.

Just before 1:59 p.m., officers responded to the 1700 block of South Tenth Avenue regarding a burglary report.

The reporting party witnessed the suspect exit the underconstruction location carrying two full trash bags. The officer discovered the suspect had cut the gate and stolen various items from the location. The suspect is described as a Hispanic male in his 40’s, with dark skin, black hair, and a black mustache.

At approximately 7:09 p.m., an officer responded to Victoria’s Secret, 400 South Baldwin Avenue, regarding a burglary report. Surveillance footage revealed two suspects

stole 70 pairs of underwear valued at $1,155.00. Suspect 1 is described as a Hispanic male in his late 20’s, average build, and wearing a white Tshirt with a lanyard around his neck. Suspect 2 is described as a Hispanic female.

July 25 Shortly after 1:52 p.m., an officer responded to Arcadia Par 3 Golf Course, 620 East Live Oak Avenue, regarding a vehicle burglary report. An investigation revealed two suspects were seen breaking into three vehicles. They fled with designer sunglasses, shoes, and change. The suspects are described as a Hispanic male and female, both seen riding bicycles.

Before 8:56 p.m., an officer responded to Dianne’s Blues Café, 16 East Huntington Drive, regarding a battery report. The restaurant manager confronted the suspect who was seen drinking an alcoholic beverage behind the business.

The suspect responded by throwing the canned beverage at the victim. The suspect, a 48-year-old male from Diamond Bar, was located, arrested.

July 26 Around 3:54 p.m., an officer responded to Go-Go Liquor, 914 West Duarte Road, regarding a vehicle burglary report. Surveillance footage revealed two male suspects smashed the window of the victim’s vehicle and stole approximately $4,500 worth of tobacco products. Both suspects are believed to be in their 30’, they had medium builds, and were both approximately 5’8”. They were seen fleeing in a blue sedan with dealer plates.

At about 5:21 p.m., officers responded to a residence in the 100 block of La Sierra Avenue regarding a burglary alarm activation. An investigation revealed a female suspect smashed a front door window with her hand causing a laceration. A records check revealed she also had an outstanding misdemeanor warrant. The 32-year-old female

from Rancho Dominguez was arrested.

July 27 Just before 9:36 p.m., an officer responded to Macy’s, 400 South Baldwin Avenue, regarding a theft report. A loss prevention employee witnessed the suspect select nearly $5,440.00 worth of merchandise before he exited the store, failing to make payment. He entered a large, tan sedan and fled. The suspect is described as a Hispanic male, 6’ tall, 200 pounds, with short, black, curly hair.

MONROVIA July 19 At 10:30 a.m., a caller reported a homeless male subject lying across a sidewalk in the 100 block of West Foothill.

Officers responded to determine if the subject needed medical care, but found him to be heavily intoxicated and unable to care for his own safety.

He was arrested and held for a sobering period.

At 9:02 p.m., security for a store in the 500 block of West Huntington called to report they were detaining four subjects for shoplifting. Officers arrived, and after conducting an investigation, they arrested and took the four subjects into custody. The stolen property was returned to the store.

July 20 At 10:01 a.m., security for a store in the 1600 block of South Mountain called to report a female subject had just fled their store with power tools and had not paid for the merchandise. They advised she entered a black vehicle driven by a male subject. Officers arrived and stopped the vehicle as it was leaving the parking lot. After investigating, both subjects were arrested and the stolen property was returned.

July 21 At 1:26 a.m., an officer was patrolling the 1500 block of South Mayflower when he

saw a bicyclist commit a violation of the rules of the road. He stopped the bicyclist and discovered he was in possession of a pipe that had been used to smoke methamphetamine.

The rider was arrested.

At 2:03 a.m., a caller reported a motorist had just collided into a curb in the 300 block of West Central. Officers responded and contacted the driver. The driver was intoxicated, and after field sobriety tests were conducted, he was arrested for DUI. At 10:42 p.m., a resident in the 200 block of West Central reported she was having a dispute with her neighbor.

Officers arrived and contacted both subjects. After investigating, it was discovered one subject forced her way into the other’s home and made criminal threats while brandishing a knife. The suspect was arrested.

July 22 At 3:16 a.m., a resident in the 2000 block of South Myrtle reported a motorist had just collided into a curb in front of her house. Officers arrived and contacted the driver, who was found to be intoxicated. Field sobriety tests were conducted and the driver was arrested for DUI. At 8:53 a.m., a resident in the 200 block of South Ivy walked outside their home and discovered their vehicle had been stolen sometime during the night. While conducting the investigation, officers received notice that another police agency found the vehicle completely stripped.

At 9:29 p.m., security for a grocery store in the 100

block of West Foothill reported they were detaining a male subject who they observed shoplifting from the store. As they were detaining him, the subject began hitting them and forced the stolen property from their hands as he attempted to escape detention.

Officers arrived, and after an investigation, arrested the subject.

July 23 At 8:09 p.m., a caller reported a male subject was standing in front of a residence in the 600 block of East Colorado, possibly selling narcotics. Officers arrived and the subject attempted to run from them, but was detained.

A computer check revealed he had multiple warrants for his arrest. He was arrested and taken into custody.

July 25 At 4:06 p.m., the house sitter for a home in the 300 block of Oakcliff arrived and found the house had been burglarized while the residents were on vacation. Officers arrived and discovered the suspects entered through an unlocked rear door. It is unknown what was taken.

SIERRA MADRE July 26 At about 8 p.m. a resident in the 700 block of East Grandview Avenue reported that an unknown suspect(s) removed an electronic tablet from his sealed Amazon package that was delivered to his residence.

After removing the device the suspect(s) resealed the package with clear tape.

July 24 July 27 At 7:47 p.m., a caller reported a homeless female subject lying on the sidewalk in the 900 block of West Duarte, possibly in need of medical care. When officers arrived, they contacted the subject and found her to be heavily intoxicated. She was arrested and taken into custody, but resisted officers. In the jail she bit one of the officers while handcuffs were being removed.

At 9:27 p.m., a female subject entered the police lobby and advised she had just been battered by her husband inside their home in the 1800 block of Eighth Avenue. Monrovia Paramedics were called and provided assistance for her injuries. She was given information for victim’s assistance. Officers were unable to contact the male subject.

At Mountain Trail and Highland Avenue, officers conducted a traffic stop at about 1:26 a.m. for a vehicle code violation. Upon contacting the driver, it was discovered that the driver was driving with a driver’s permit and unaccompanied by an appropriate passenger. The driver was cited, and the legal guardian of the driver was cited. The vehicle was then released to a licensed driver (legal guardian).

July 28 A welfare check was requested by a resident for a driver of a vehicle slumped over the steering wheel parked in the 500 block of West Sierra Madre Boulevard. Officers determined that he was under the influence of alcohol. The driver was arrested.

Essentially, this is the Citizen of the Year honor. In 2014 Assemblyman Chris Holden honored Pam with a Business of the Year award. Holden said: “I am pleased to honor Pam Fitzpatrick not only for all her hard work, but for her civic commitment as well. Pam is a success not only because she’s a good businesswoman, but because she gives back to the community. Businesses like hers are the backbone of the community and it is important that we recognize their contributions to the economy of California.”

These are just two of the many well-deserved accolades bestowed upon Monrovia’s “First Lady of Old Town.”

Many of our readers will remember Pam for her insightful, fun column that appeared in Monrovia Weekly until she became too ill to write. “The Old Town Report” was part history, part retail news and always fun and inspirational for the business and community at large.

Tributes on her Facebook page continue to grow, perhaps Hannes and Rachel Sheen said it best: “I don’t

Donna Baker shared: “I'm sorrowful to learn of the passing of my dear friend and client, Pamela Fitzpatrick.

From the first day I met her, she was inspiring because of her love of this small town. She gave her all to each and every

aspect of making Monrovia a better place to live. I was so honored to be one of the people who nominated Pam for Citizen of the Year. She deserved it! She can never be replaced. Pam will be in our hearts and in the heart of Monrovia's past and future forever. Be well in heaven, my friend! You are now a real angel. I don't think any other

person in this city did more for Old Town than Pamela Fitzpatrick! She has been and will be sorely missed!”

Jennifer Stone shared her thoughts: “Oh how I loved Pamela Fitzpatrick. Heartbroken at her passing just doesn’t say enough. Pam was like a mother to me. She was a friend, a

mentor and an inspiration. She lived her life without fear and I so admired that about her. My life has been touched by her being a part of it and it won’t be the same without her.

“Pam helped make Monrovia what it is today and her legacy will live on but Monrovia has just lost part of its soul. No one worked so hard for so long to make Monrovia better.

“My love and thoughts go out to her entire family during this difficult time. Rest in Peace Pam I will miss you forever but I’m so thankful for our time together.”

Services will be at Live Oak Cemetery on Aug. 9 at 11 a.m. and graveside services will be at noon. Pam’s sisters Jennifer Ranger and Cindy Ranger along with Luke, Wil, David and daughter in law Meghan wish to thank the community for their overwhelming support during this difficult time.

Arcadia Blues Club Hosts ‘6 String Showdown’ This summer, the Long Beach Blues Society in conjunction with the New Blues Festival and Bobby Bluehouse’s Arcadia Blues Club is presenting the “6 String Showdown (6SS),” a head-to-head series of regional blues guitar competitions to crown Southern California's best blues guitar player on the main stage of this year’s New Blues Festival at El Dorado Park in Long Beach on Sunday, Sept. 2.

“W

on’t You Be My Neighbor,” have you seen the documentary about Fred Rogers, Mr. Rogers to most?

If you haven’t, DO. He was a man of ‘radical kindness,’ a phrase that comes up often when remembering him.

The first time I encountered “Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood” was with my own children.

My first thoughts? The sets were a bit cheesy, the puppets

were simple and unsophisticated perhaps a little frayed and who was this man who wanted to be my neighbor changing into his Perry Como sweater and Top-Sider tennis shoes?

By the end of the first episode I saw his gift, felt it even. Yes, he tackled hard issues, went toe to toe with the darkness in the world but he also brought the light, all the while respecting children in a way that no other person or program on television had. Mr. Rogers never shied away from difficulties facing

children or their joys.

I learned how crayons were made, how emotions were not to be feared, and how he liked me just the way I am.

“Love is the root of everything. All learning, all relationships. Love or the lack of it.” Mr. Rogers was right about that.

monrovia Literacy Van Makes Appearances before ‘back to school’ The Monrovia Reads Literacy Van will be making two appearances this week. On Aug. 4 the van will be at Huntington Oaks Shopping Center (south side of Huntington Drive between Monterey and Mayflower avenues) with its usual activities including story time and the ability for those attending to obtain a library card and check out books.

The van will also attend the Foothill Unity Center’s annual back to school event

at Santa Anita Racetrack. When school resumes, the van will return to its regular schedule of visiting each of the elementary schools Monday through Friday afternoons.

Pasadena’s Pacific Oaks College Expands Transfer Pathway Pacific Oaks College recently announced its commitment and support of a transfer pathway between the Association of Independent California Colleges and Universities (AICCU) and the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office.

The pathway is designed for college students graduating with an Associate in Arts for Transfer (AA-T) or an Associate in Science for Transfer (AS-T) from a California community college and wishing to transfer to a fouryear independent, nonprofit

institution like Pacific Oaks College. A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed by the AICCU President Kristen Soares and California Community College’s Chancellor Eloy Ortiz Oakley to further strengthen the commitment of California’s independent nonprofit higher education sector toward the access and success of students and affordability of quality education across the state.

This pathway is the AICCU sector’s adoption of the Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT) pathway between

the California Community Colleges and the California State University (CSU) system. Much like the current CSU ADT pathway, Pacific Oaks College will commit to guaranteeing admission for ADT students who apply, as well as accepting a minimum of 60 units transferred, and assure these students start at Pacific Oaks College with a junior standing.

yrtle Avenue in Monrovia is known for its bustling atmosphere, particularly on Friday nights—but homey gems live on the offshoots.

That’s where The Peach Cafe comes in.

Run by Chef Chris Gattan and Jennifer Gattan, The Peach Cafe opens its doors on Colorado Boulevard at 7:30 a.m. for early breakfasters and gourmet coffee grabs, shuttering at 3 p.m. after the lunch rush.

The spot has been around

the neighborhood since 2005 but entered a new era four years ago when acquired by the Gattans.

“What makes the Peach Cafe unique to the area is the variety,” said the chef.

“From our full espresso bar, custom-made coffee, mimosa flights and micheladas to pancakes, waffles, half-pound angus burgers, and our flavorful weekend specials, we provide our customers with tons of options.”

Originally learning to cook from his mom and grandmother, Gattan graduated from culinary school in 2002 and went

It happened, he said, when Alexander planned to conquer a city, and ordered four of his generals to launch a simultaneous attack from all four corners of the city at a specified time.

One of his generals asked him how they would know the exact moment to attack since they had no way to communicate with each other.

Alexander then told them to wrap a wet cloth around their wrists in the morning, and to attack when the sun had dried the cloth.

Readers Reminds Community About Black Women’s Equal Pay Day Did you know that a black woman has to work for 565 days to make the same amount a man makes in 365 days?

That’s right; a black woman on average needs to work an extra eight months and seven days to equal the average pay a white man earned the year before. That is why #BlackWomensEqualPayDay is Aug. 7 this year. Despite the California Equal Pay Act, black California women earn 62 cents to the dollar even after controlling for education, years of experience, and location (US Census Bureau, 2017).

According to a 2016 report from the National Center for Education Statistics, black women have become one of the most educated slices of the American population.

Black women are paid less no matter how much education they have. That works out to $840,040 in lost wages by the end of their careers.

Locally, at two of Pasadena’s revered educational

institutions, Fuller Seminary and Pasadena City College, it is important to highlight the invisible plight of black women. On Nov. 9, 2017, the PCC Courier published the article “PCC Perpetuates Erasure of Black Leadership” which highlighted the erasure of black leadership (including black women), lack of promotional opportunities, and [an] overall decline in black student/employee representation at PCC. At Fuller Seminary, during the June 2018 Baccalaureate Commencement, black women and allies stood up in powerful silent protest to the #BlackExodus of Fuller faculty, staff, and students.

Men, women, of all colors, races, and creeds must join forces to realize this is an injustice. As we approach Aug. 7, talk about it freely, take dedicated action, ask your employers to recognize and address the unequal pay, - it is important for everyone to bring awareness and action for equal pay for black women.

Earl Eager Albert October 8, 1945 - July 16, 2018

E

arl Eager Albert of Temple City, Calif. passed away from complications of cancer on Monday, July 16.

He was 72 years of age. Earl was born in Glendale, Calif. on Oct. 8, 1945 to Richard and Mary-Jane Albert of Arcadia.

Earl attended Highland Oaks Elementary, First Avenue Junior High School and was a 1963 graduate of Arcadia High School. He played clarinet in Marching Band and was on his high school’s varsity golf team. Earl earned an Associate of Arts degree at PCC and continued his studies at the University of Colorado. In 1966 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy; attaining the rank of Petty Officer Second Class. SK2 Albert worked in the Supply Division on the Destroyer USS Agerholm DD 826 and USS Richmond K. Turner-DLG-20. The USS Agerholm was frequently deployed to the western Pacific where PO2 Albert and crew played an integral role in naval gunfire support, anti-

submarine warfare, and search and rescue in Vietnam’s theatre of operations. After four years Earl separated from active duty and was given an honorable discharge.

Earl worked at Victor Leather Goods in Pasadena before taking a job with David Levy Printing Company in Los Angeles where he operated and maintained their offset and screen process printing presses for several years.

Earl was a great conversationalist and knowledgeable

on many diverse subjects. He was a kind, caring, and gentle man. His love and knowledge of music was extensive. He enjoyed improvising on bass guitar, especially with friends John and Gene. His ensemble “The Folkers” played a couple of warm-up sets at The Pasadena Ice House before the evening’s main billing; good memories that Earl was always proud of.

Earl leaves behind Charlotte, his wife of 46 years, stepson Benton Page, stepdaughter Kimberly Espinoza and husband Ricardo, granddaughter Alisha Espinoza, brother Richard Albert of Oakmont, nieces Miriam and Leah, neighbors Mike and Cindy Mitchell, and childhood friend Gene Glasco.

Earl’s remains will be interred in a military ceremony on July 31 at the Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside, Calif.

The City of Arcadia will be adjourning their Aug. 7 city council meeting in memory of Earl Eager Albert.

Monrovia Wildcats Set Their Sights on Upcoming Season

I

n a sport that is arguably the epitome of the saying, “It’s easier said than done,” the Monrovia cross country team is in peak condition for their season this fall.

Led by head coach Nolan Shaheed, the Wildcats have their work cut out for them but are more than ready for the long haul.

Last season, Monrovia remained highly competitive throughout their 2017 campaign. However, once the final meets started rolling around, some the team’s top runners were riddled with injuries, hurting their chances to qualify for CIF. Shaheed, who is entering his eighth year as head coach at Monrovia, is still competing himself and holds a handful

of American and world records. When placed at the helm, Shaheed said he wanted to implement a culture of not only winning, but also academia into the cross country program.

“I want to develop these high schools kids into adults,” Shaheed said. “I have put a big emphasis on academics and I want to ensure that the kids get a great opportunity to make it in this world when they grow out of high school.”

This upcoming season, Shaheed is hopeful the Wildcats’ hard work during these dog days of summer can help them in the latter parts of year. The team will feature several key returners including captain Roberto Soto on the boys’ side and Alayna Peters on the girls’ side.

Meet the Coach: Pasadena High School Baseball’s Michael Parisi If you’ve been following Pasadena baseball for quite a while, no introduction would be needed for recent hire Michael Parisi, who returned to the program for a second tenure as head coach.

Parisi logged in a successful eight-season spell during his first go-around as Pasadena’s head coach, leading the Bulldogs to a 117-96-1 record from 2008-2015.

After leaving Pasadena High School, he went on to coach city rival La Salle for two years. However, he was eventually let go despite leading the Lancers to a 40-21 record.

Parisi is a local product as he was born and raised in nearby Arcadia, Calif.

During his college years, he was an All-American at Southern California powerhouse Cal State Fullerton from 1992 to 1994. He also studied communications and eventually went on to graduate school at Azusa Pacific University.

Parisi was also selected 792nd overall by the California Angeles in the 1991 Amateur Entry Draft and 152nd overall by the Florida Marlins in the 1994 Amateur

Entry Draft. He then had stints in the minors with a handful of squads including the Elmira Pioneers, Kane County Cougars, and Brevard County Manatees.

Along with coaching the Bulldogs’ baseball team,

Parisi is also a teacher for Pasadena Unified School District. He will take charge of a Pasadena team that put together a 15-12 overall record last season but hasn’t seen the playoffs since 2015.

When it comes to high school sports in the fall, it’s safe to say that most fans are excited for the return of football.

And while the football scene at Arcadia High School is nothing to scoff at, it’s the girls’ tennis team that boasts a real chance to make a deep run in the playoffs this year.

Coming off a prosperous year that saw them making it to the fourth round of CIF, the Apaches are back and stronger than

ever. Head coach Bo Win Tin returns for another promising season at the Apaches’ helm where he and the team still have an axe to grind.

Last season, Arcadia was nearly unbeatable as the Apaches dominated their opponents with pure skill and grace. The team went 19-0-1 overall and was unblemished in Pacific League action at 10-0.

The only loss came against the almighty Corona del Mar in that

fateful CIF match up, which ultimately concluded the Apaches’ 2017 season. This year, Arcadia has quite a few tough matches up ahead including some against Rancho Cucamonga, Mira Costa, and West Ranch.

Arcadia’s first game of the season lands on Aug. 23 as the Apaches square off against West Ranch.

The Apaches will then open league play with a match against Hoover on Sept. 4.
