Man Arrested for Attempting to Set Fire to Pasadena Police Cruiser Staff WRITER editorial@beaconmedianews.com

Pasadena Police officers responded to the north side of the Pasadena Police Station regarding a male who was observed pouring an unidentified fluid on the hood of a marked Pasadena Police vehicle on July 20. Upon contact with the suspect, it became clear he was holding a lighter.

The American Red Cross is calling on Southern California baseball fans to step up to the plate and help overcome a summer blood shortage by donating blood at the 20th annual Dodgers and Angels Baseball Fans Blood Drive. The blood drive will take place July 28 from 7 a.m. – 3 p.m. at Pasadena’s Red Cross Blood Donation Center, located at 133 N. Altadena Dr., and multiple other sites. As a thank you, all who come to donate will receive a voucher for two

Monrovia and Pasadena Organization Partnering to Educate City on Wildlife Mark your calendars for a joint community outreach meeting presented by the Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA with the City of Monrovia. The Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA will be highlighting the unique hillsides of Monrovia, and the natural habitat of bears in that area. They will be offering information and suggestions in diffusing conflict to coexist in harmony with wildlife. The meeting will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 8, at 7 p.m. in the Library Community Room, located at 321 S. Myrtle Ave. The meeting has been coordinated in part due to the increased visibility of wildlife in Monrovia’s residential neighborhoods.

During the past few weeks, the City has observed the normal summer increase in calls for service related to bear and other wildlife sightings.

In addition to the increases in human-wildlife interfaces during the past few months, the City has heard reports about some disturbing trends.

Representatives from the Pasadena Humane Society have notified the City that during the past few weeks, there have been several incidents where raw meat was left in open bags at locations where there have been frequent bear sightings in Monrovia.

is having the meat sent to a lab for testing to determine if the meat was laced with any sort of poison that could harm animals that

are attracted to and end up eating the raw meat. The Monrovia Police Department is providing support for the ongoing review of

the matter.

Obviously, no one should be putting raw meat out for the wildlife, regardless of intention.

Leaving out meat is illegal, can attract potentially dangerous wildlife, and can increase exposure to disease, according to the Pasadena Humane Society.

Given all of the interest and attention surrounding wildlife interfaces, anyone who has a concern or an interest in the issue should attend the wildlifeurban interface community meeting.

people gathered in the room, with more people walking in every few minutes; the crowd ranged in all ages.

Standing in one corner of the room was K-9 handler Travis Sargent, who was later seen taking pictures with his K-9 and attendees. This was Sargent’s second time at a Coffee with a Cop event. He said he thinks this type of event is nice because people are in a friendly mood and he gets to meet civilians in different circumstances than he otherwise would.

“People kind of open up a little more and feel free to talk,” he said.

Questions he typically gets asked are about his dog and the type of crime going on in the community.

Other topics people often ask during these events include traffic issues, crime prevention tips, and volunteering with the department, according to Administrative Sergeant Brian Ortiz.

Arcadia PD began this event in late 2013 as a different way to reach out to the public. Detectives, patrol officers, and whoever else is on duty, come out to the event to talk to civilians.

“In police culture, we’re generally talking to you at the door of your car or when something bad happen[s] at your house, and that's not really an opportunity for people to ask questions,” said Ortiz. “So we wanted to set up a forum where people would feel comfortable to talk to officers and get to know what we do …”

Ortiz said he has seen an increase in participation over the years. The event ranges from “as few as 50 to as many as 175,” he said.

Though there haven’t been any changes to the event since its inception, the department showcases different novelties at the events; from mobile command posts

to a SWAT armor vehicle.

During this particular event, a 1959 police car was stationed right outside of the venue for people to look at.

The event usually takes place quarterly and is held in different venues across Arcadia, according to Ortiz.

Ortiz said these gatherings help residents understand what the goals of the department are, which are to keep Arcadia safe and to maintain the quality of life within the city.

Pearl Chen, an Arcadia resident of 20 years, attended the event for a chance to ask the police about break-ins in the area. Chen said she thinks this type of event makes it easier to approach

police and likes that they want to communicate with citizens. The opportunity to ask police questions helps her better understand the law, she said.

Mayor Sho Tay was also in attendance and talking to citizens and members of the police department.

“Now they know the officer is just another person,” he said. “People think the officers are a totally different type of human, but they are just normal people.”

The next community event with the police department will be National Night Out on Aug. 7, which will be another opportunity for citizens to interact with the police.

Arcadia police officers supply crime information to neighborhood watch organizations and instruct these groups in various crime prevention techniques.

As an Arcadia resident, the Neighborhood Watch program is an opportunity for

you to take part in reducing crime in Arcadia and increasing your safety by: - Participating in neighborhood watch.

- Increasing your safety knowledge and awareness.

- Getting to know your neighbors and neighborhood.

The most current campaign is “See Something Say Something”, which means if you see unusual activity in your neighborhood, don’t wait to alert law enforcement, pick up the phone and call the Arcadia Police Department at (626) 574-5123 or Dial 9-1-1 immediately. Alert police to anything that may look suspicious. APD wants to ensure your safety, and your call to alert an officer is the best way that you can report important information.

ARCADIA July 15 Shortly before 12:48 a.m., an officer conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle near the intersection of Second Avenue and California Street for driving recklessly. The officer located the vehicle as it was speeding and almost hit the officer’s vehicle. Upon contacting the driver, the officer detected a strong odor of alcohol emitting from his breath. The 43-year-old male from Arcadia was arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking.

July 16 Just after 10:37 a.m., officers responded to the 500 block of North Old Ranch Road regarding a residential burglary report. An investigation revealed a rear window had been broken sometime between July 11th and July 16th. No loss was report but the suspect left behind clothing and multiple documents containing personal identifying information. As the officers drove away, they located a transient. The transient identified the clothing as his own and admitted to breaking the window. The suspect was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for evaluation.

At approximately 4:20 p.m., an officer responded to 24 Hour Fitness, 125 North First Avenue, regarding a shoplift report. Surveillance footage revealed the suspect stole a backpack, and then placed stolen headphones in the backpack before he was confronted by employees. The suspect was on probation at the time so he was placed on a hold. The 18-year-old male from Arcadia was arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking.

MONROVIA July 12

Shortly after 12:50 p.m., officers responded to a residence in the 00 block of West Last Flores Avenue regarding a burglary in progress. The suspects pried off a window screen, entered the residence, and the resident who was home at the time was able to escape out a side door. The suspects were seen exiting the home through the front door and entering a green or grey Mercedes Benz sedan. Both suspects were described as black males, 18 to 25-yearsold, and wearing hooded sweatshirts. The investigation is ongoing.

July 19 Just before 12:07 p.m., an officer responded to a residence in the 600 block of Beverly Drive regarding a battery report. The officer discovered an altercation occurred between a boyfriend and girlfriend resulting in the boyfriend kicking the victim in the head and slapping her causing visible bruising. The suspect 25-year-old male from Arcadia was gone by the time officers arrived. The investigation is ongoing.

At 8:05 a.m., a female subject called police to report her vehicle had been burglarized. She had parked her vehicle and purchased coffee from a store in the 600 block of West Huntington. She returned to find the vehicle window had been shattered to gain entry and the vehicle was burglarized. This investigation is continuing.

At 8:36 p.m., officers found a vehicle that had been reported stolen parked in a parking lot in the 100 block of West Foothill. They monitored the vehicle and saw a male subject enter the vehicle to drive away. They stopped the subject, and after investigation, arrested him for theft of the vehicle.

July 13 At 1:15 a.m., a caller reported a motorist collided into a parked vehicle in the 500 block of South Alta Vista.

Officers responded and contacted the driver, who was intoxicated. After field sobriety tests were conducted, the driver was arrested for DUI.

At 3:39 p.m., the manager of a store in the 1600 block of South Mountain reported a customer had purchased merchandise using a counterfeit bill. Officers responded to investigate. During the investigation it was discovered that additional customers had recently passed similar counterfeit bills. The U.S. Secret Service was notified. This investigation is continuing.

July 14 At 6:44 p.m., two vehicles collided into one another at the intersection of Huntington and Fifth. One of the drivers fled the scene, failing to stop and exchange information. This investigation is continuing. No injuries were reported.

July 15 At 2:59 a.m., an officer was patrolling the 800 block of West Olive when he saw a suspicious male loitering on the street. He stopped the subject and discovered there was a warrant for his arrest, as well as a court order restraining him from being where he was. The subject was arrested, and during the booking process, he physically resisted officers.

At 10:17 p.m., security for a business in the 100 block of West Foothill reported a male subject had strewn his belongings across a business walkway for customers and was refusing to leave. Officers arrived and the subject continued to refuse to pick up his belongings and leave. A computer check revealed the subject had a warrant for his arrest, so he was taken into custody.

July 17 At 1:14 p.m., employees of a store in the 400 block of West Huntington reported a male subject had just left their store after concealing merchandise in his backpack and failing to pay for the items.

Officers arrived and searched for the suspect. The suspect was located and arrested. The property was returned to the store.

At 1:32 p.m., employees of a bank in the 200 block of South Myrtle reported a suspicious male subject loitering in his car in their parking lot.

Officers arrived and contacted the subject, who was found to be in possession of a hypodermic needle filled with methamphetamine, along with other narcotics paraphernalia. The subject was arrested and his vehicle was towed.

July 16 July 18

July 20 Shortly after 2:49 p.m., an officer responded to a residence in the 700 block of Encino Drive regarding a fraud report. The victim discovered a fraudulent transaction on his Discovered card for the amount of $3,886.79. The victim does not know how the suspect obtained their personal information or the identity of the suspect.

July 21

July 17 At about 4:30 a.m., an officer responded to a carport in the 100 block of California Street regarding a vehicle burglary report. The officer discovered an unknown suspect smashed two windows and fled with a wallet containing

At approximately 12:41 a.m., an officer responded to the Santa Anita Race Track, 285 West Huntington Drive, regarding a robbery report.

Officers searched the area for the suspects, but were unable to locate them. This investigation is continuing.

At 1:43 p.m., an officer was patrolling the 500 block of East Walnut when he saw a parked vehicle that had expired registration. A computer check revealed the plates on the vehicle were not on the right car. While having the vehicle towed, the owner approached the officer and was behaving erratically. She was found to be in possession of methamphetamine, so she was arrested and taken into custody.

At 9:01 a.m., a landscaper was doing work at a business in the 400 block of Huntington when a male subject approached his work truck and took some of his tools, then fled the area in a vehicle. Officers searched for the suspect, but were unable to locate him. This investigation is continuing.

July 18 at 9:01 a.m., an elderly female resident living in the 100 block of North Fifth reported she had served her daughter with a restraining order earlier in the morning, using the service of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, who forced her daughter out of the house.

After the deputies left, her

daughter returned and began hitting the mother. Officers responded and after an investigation, arrested the restrained person.

SIERRA MADRE July 20 An officer responded to the station lobby at about 7:30 a.m. for a report of stolen money. The victim from the 200 block of West Sierra Madre Boulevard reported that currency that was in his was room was taken sometime between 7/16/18 and 7/20/18.

At 9:05 a.m. a vehicle in the 300 block of North Lima Street struck a parked van resulting in a non-injury accident. Both parties exchanged information.

At 11:16 a.m. a resident in the 300 block of North Lima reported that an unknown suspect(s) possibly using a pellet gun, shot and damaged two double paned windows in his home.

July 22 Officers responded at about 4:23 p.m. to Santa Anita Avenue, south of Grandview Avenue, for an injury traffic collision. A vehicle headed south on Santa Anita Avenue struck another vehicle then collided with a power pole, knocking down both the pole and power lines. The driver and the passenger of the southbound vehicle were transported to a local hospital

by Sierra Madre Fire Paramedics for their injuries. Southern California Edison also responded for repair of the power lines and pole.

ARCADIA’S ARBORETUM HOSTS ‘ARTS TALK: DIGITAL NATURE’ “Digital Nature,” an exhibition of visual art projected onto the Arboretum’s landscape, is coming to the Arboretum in February 2019. On Saturday, July 28 at 4 p.m., three participating artists, Mia Feuer, Andrew Yang, and Chris Kallmyer, will have a conversation with curator Shirley Alexandra Watts about the intersec-

tions of nature, technology, and creative expression.

The Arboretum thanks the National Endowment for the Arts for their generous support. The talk is included in regular admission and is free for members.

Mia Feuer and Andrew Yang will be in residency at the Arboretum July 23 through July 30.

Through field research, collaborations, and a deep fascination with natural and synthetic materials, Mia Feuer explores concepts relating to the transfiguration, transformation, and interconnectedness of humans, animals, machines and environments.

She collects materials, timelines, sounds, forms, textures, experiences, and stories. She

utilizes 3D scanners, photogrammetry, a range of moldmaking techniques, field recorders and hydrophones to create immersive installations, and allegorical objects that explore one’s simultaneous role as the Protector and Exploiter of The Earth.

Andrew Yang works across the visual arts, the sciences, and natural history to explore the cosmological flux. Exhibiting from Oklahoma to Yokohama, his writing and research can be found in journals including Biological Theory, International

Tetra Tech has released information confirming they are looking into the project and are analyzing core samples pulled from the sediment to

determine the characteristics of the sediment, abnormalities within it, and the environmental impact the sediment can have.

What began as a sag pond gave life to nature, sustained humans, and until relatively recently, held a considerable amount of water. Lake Baldwin is now a muddy pit with a lustrous past and potentially bright future.

Much of the average life is spent in between noteworthy events. While under the influence of stopping to smell the arboretum,

Los Angeles County can be thankful that they at least still have something to call Lake Baldwin, rather than looking mournfully over a mass of pavement and imagining what was once there before it.

Arcadia Weekly will continue to provide updates on this story for as long as the project progresses. However, with the slow moving parts in this story operating independently and without contact, there is no definite answer as to what is going on with Arcadia’s Lake Baldwin.

Boston Court Pasadena’s Annual Festival Features New Play About Feminism May s. ruiz MayChu@att.net

ong before the word feminism entered our lexicon, women were coming together to indulge in intellectual pursuits that were deemed, at the time, to be the domain of the male species. That’s what a group of women who lived in 1750s London did when they formed The Blue Stocking Society.

“Ladies,” a new play by Kit Steinkellner, is a fictional account of a year in the life of The Blue Stocking Society and explores the tangled knot of electric and jagged relationships that comprise this group.

These women are pioneers and revolutionaries emboldened by the call to arms to be the first of their kind and burdened by the misfortune of being born far ahead of their time.

It will be featured this Saturday, July 28, at 11:00 am at Boston Court Pasadena’s 14th Annual New Play Reading Festival and will be directed by Co-Artistic Director Michael Michetti.

Steinkellner says, “The idea came to me about ten years ago when I was in London and I went to the National Portrait Gallery which was holding an exhibit about these women. They

intrigued me as being true pilgrims and pioneers in a realm which had absolutely no roadmap. Writing a play about them struck me as being both exciting and scary.

“I wanted to tell their story in an ‘out-of- the-box’ way just as they had done when they began their club. In dealing with something that is set in the past, I realized there’s a risk that the story might come off as dusty, archaic, or irrelevant. As I researched about their lives, read their diaries and their correspondence with each other, it became important for me to make sure I did it exactly right.

“To create something

exciting that explains my obsession with these women, and why I was so captivated by them, I used time travel to be part of the play as the historian and narrator. I investigated why I wanted to have a relationship with women who lived over a hundred years ago and how they are relevant in today’s world.”

Emilie Beck, Boston Court Pasadena’s Literary Manager, who has been involved in the New Play Reading Festival for seven years, declares, “The four new plays we’ve chosen for this year’s Festival are all written by women. While we read without attention to gender, we were drawn to

these voices, which speak to a wide array of underrepresented female experiences.

It’s really important to us to represent the voice that has been disenfranchised.”

The New Play Reading Festival is a key component of Boston Court Pasadena’s commitment to nurturing playwrights and new work. It paves the way for unknown artists’ creations to get recognized and produced on stage.

What a thrilling prospect it is if this weekend we could be seeing the future Eugene O’Neills or George Bernard Shaws whose plays are esteemed, revered, and performed to this day!

In another historymaking move, California Philharmonic Maestro Victor Vener brilliantly blends the old with the new and classic music with modern dance as he partners with special guest Alyson Stoner to present an awe-inspiring performance of Stravinsky’s “Rite of Spring.” The powerful performance is set to take place during “Symphonic Dances,” the orchestra’s third concert of the 2018 summer season on July 29.

The Huntington in San Marino Breaks Ground on Final Phase of Chinese Garden The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens recently announced that, with the majority of funding in place, it is launching the final phase of construction on its renowned Chinese Garden, known by the poetic name Liu Fang Yuan, the Garden of Flowing Fragrance. A ceremonial groundbreaking is scheduled for Aug. 28, with construction expected to continue for the next 18 months.

The new features will increase the garden’s footprint from the initial 3.5 acres to its long-planned 12 acres, making it one of the largest classical-style Chinese gardens in the world. Inspired by the centuries-old Chinese tradition of private scholars’ gardens, Liu Fang Yuan opened in 2008 with eight tile-roofed pavilions situated around a one-acre lake. In 2014, two new pavilions and a rock grotto were added.

An exhibition complex at the north end of the garden is one of the key elements of this final phase. Comprising a traditional scholar’s studio and an art gallery for changing displays, it will dramatically expand the possibilities for programming related to the garden.

here are many in the U.S. who plan to go on to achieve a higher education.

However, with recent changes in immigration policies many face the difficulty of feeling insecure in going to school. Many who are a part of minority groups are fearful of the drastic reforms and policies that have been implemented by the Trump administration, and what it could mean in terms of going or returning to school.

According to Education Reform Now, “Latinx students have made great progress in recent decades, but the Trump administration’s immigration policies threaten to undo that progress.” With the threat of repeal of the Dream Act and Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), which helps provide financial aid, many students feel that they are losing the opportunity of

admission to a college and what it would mean for their status within the U.S. With the fears and stresses about the upcoming semester, there are steps students can take to prepare for admissions and financial aid processing. The first, and most important, step is knowing that “there is no federal or state law that prohibits the admission of undocumented immigrants to U.S. colleges” according to College Board. Some schools may classify undocumented students as foreign, but ultimately cannot turn them away due to their undocumented status.

The next step is to speak to a counselor and discuss your situation and what plan of action to take. Counselors should be familiar with most federal and state policies regarding admissions and financial aid, and can assist in directing students towards the resources they will need.

While there are plenty

of precautions and preparations that students can take, colleges and universities are also preparing for students by giving them a welcoming atmosphere. Many schools are protesting the reformed immigration policies and understand the impact they have on the students and

their families. Some schools for example are listed as “safe haven” or “sanctuary” schools. According to EdSource, “Definitions of ‘sanctuary’ vary from district to district, but in most cases it means that school staff will not allow federal immigration agents on campus without a

warrant, subpoena, or court order.”

As this is such a popular event for volunteers, it is necessary to accept volun-

teer registration on a first come, first serve basis until the total number of needed volunteers is reached. They are coordinating this event with the desire for each volunteer to have the most positive and amazing experience possible.

Monrovia High Teacher Inducted into the Jostens Renaissance Hall of Fame Paul Dols, a 21-year social science teacher and a 10-year Renaissance coordinator at Monrovia High School was inducted into the Jostens Renaissance Hall of Fame during the fourth annual Jostens Renaissance National Conference held July 16 - 19 in Orlando, Florida.

Dols had previously said that the honor “validates what we believe in, which is [that] we want every kid who

comes on to this campus to know they are important and have the opportunity to be truly great.” He also shared that, “Renaissance changes the culture and climate of our school to make it a positive place where every student is valued, and this recognition is another push to keep fighting and to keep doing what we do.”

Hall of Fame is the highest honor that an educator can receive from Jostens Renaissance. The Hall of Fame recognizes educators whose efforts have not only made a significant impact within their schools, but also in the larger regional and/or national Renaissance community. ockin’ Rollers in Sierra Madre is a music studio and hair salon combined—and it’s coming for the status quo.

With quite possibly the best pun possible as a name for their combo-business, Rockin’ Rollers was the brainchild of musician “Joe Normal” Hutchinson and stylist Gigi Hutchinson. The duo met early in their careers, where Gigi served as a hairdresser and makeup artist on Joe’s band photoshoots.

Fast-forward a few decades, one salon and two kids later and their professional paths are still surprisingly wellmatched.

“It's funny because Joe and I have similar ways of thinking and doing business. We’ve always been self-employed, but were looking for a place to do our work together,” said Gigi. “When we started our studio, we wanted to be in this district on Montecito in

Mary Yoshie Uyeda Sakatani 1924 - July 17, 2018 Susie LING, GUEST CONTRIBUTOR Born near the Monrovia Airport in 1924, Mary lived all her life in Monrovia except for the time she was at Heart Mountain, Wyoming. She passed on July 17, 2018; five days shy of her 95th birthday.

Mary was the daughter of one of Monrovia’s pioneers, the “Strawberry King,” Yutaro Uyeda. Yutaro came to Monrovia in 1907. He liked to have Mary and her younger sister Toshiko, ride his float at the Monrovia Day parades.

Mary grew up at 331 W. Huntington Dr., in the fields of her parents’ fruit fields and right behind their fruit stand on Route 66. Mary attended Santa Fe Elementary, Clifton Junior High, and MonroviaArcadia-Duarte (MAD) High School. Mary was a member of the Catskills Racketeers Club of tennis aficionados at MAD. Mary was also part of Monrovia’s Japanese language school on Mayflower, near Duarte. During her first year at Pasadena Junior College, Mary, along with other Monrovians of Japanese descent, was sent to Heart Mountain, Wyoming concentration camp.

They returned to Monrovia in 1945 and would later grow their family on West Walnut. Mas worked at a produce market in Monterey Park. Mary later became the supervisor of the clerical department at the California Employment Services in Monrovia. The couple was married for 68 years.

Rod Salazar

Dec. 24, 1952 – July 4, 2018 Rodney Frank Salazar was born on December 24, 1952 to Reginald and Patricia Salazar in Oceanside, Calif. while his father was in the U.S. Navy. His first six years of life were spent in the Salazar family home in Alhambra.

The oldest of three children, Rod was a happygo-lucky child surrounded by a close, loving family that included lots of cousins and family friends.

At age six his family moved to south Arcadia, Calif. and he attended Rio Hondo Elementary School where he became elementary school president in 1967. He attended Arroyo High School in El Monte where he excelled in football, track and field and cross country, and served as class president and then ASB President in 1971. After attending Rio Hondo College in Whittier and competing on their track and field team, he transferred to Cal Poly San Luis Obisbo University where he attained his B.A. degree in Physical Education.

Marrying Sherry Barnard in 1980, after living in Altadena, they moved into their Arcadia home where they had three children: daughters Amanda, Melissa, and son Scott.

As coach of the Arcadia American Youth Soccer Organization All-Star team, they won the state championship in 1995.

A passionate and loving leader, his former players and their parents remained good friends to this day.

In 2002, Rod moved to Monrovia after his divorce in 2000.

After working in sales for Glendale Printing Co. for many years, Rod has worked with Printing Control in Monrovia and Stubbies Promotions in Arcadia for the past 11 years. His activities and leadership roles in the Monrovia, Arcadia, Pasadena, and Glendale chambers of commerce have been very enjoyable and rewarding for him, as well as the countless members and others who loved his happy, positive energy, cheerful laughter, warm handshakes, and love of sports (Go Raiders, Bruins, Lakers, Kings, and Dodgers!).

He was currently serving on the Board of Directors of the Arcadia Chamber of Commerce, as well as other leadership roles in our communities.

His longtime involvement with the Glendale Quarterback Club included

being a past president.

Rod's infectious enthusiasm brought light to any event he attended. His example of civic involvement and volunteerism was impeccable.

All who knew Rod are shocked and saddened by his unexpected departure from us, as his vibrant, positive, friendly spirit and energy were greatly admired. He had the ability to focus in on you as an individual and make you feel special for who you are.

On July 4, 2018, Rod was walking home from the Monrovia Fourth of July fireworks show when he suffered a heart attack.

Rodney Salazar is survived by his mother Pat Salazar, brother Reggie Salazar, sister Cindi McCarthy, daughters Amanda (Salazar) Burns, Melissa Salazar, son Scott Salazar, his devoted girlfriend of 16 years Chris Schnieders, and four granddaughters, Addison, Charlotte, Luna, and Juniper.

His Celebration of Life service will be held on Friday, July 27, 2018 at 2 p.m. at Arcadia Community Church, 121 Alice St., Arcadia, Calif. 91006.

They are complimented perfectly by Apollo’s Greek fries: French fries doused in lemon juice and Greek oregano, and covered in feta cheese. I have tried to recreate these fries

We ordered a legendary house special called “pork fries.” Pork fries are a pile of mixed ingredients, including shredded pork, bacon,

house-cheese sauce, and jalapenos over French fries.

I first tried pork fries more than a decade ago, and the flavor has haunted me ever since.

Recovering from the over-indulgence of pork, we walked around Milwaukee’s Public Market.

drove to San Pedro last week for the renowned fresh seafood at San Pedro Fish Market. But when I got off the freeway and saw the profile of the legendary USS Iowa battleship, with her massive 16-inch guns protruding above the harbor, I knew I had to investigate. I also knew I had a full-day of fun, food, and history ahead of me.

To build up an appetite I began my getaway on the deck of the mighty Iowa. For my visit, I took the Full Steam

Fish and Chips and Battleships in San Pedro Ahead Tour, which is $49.95 for adults. This tour includes separate tickets for the regular self-guided general admission tour as well as the new guided behind the scenes tour of the engineering spaces on board.

The new two-hour guided tour of an engine room, boiler room, hospital, post office, Combat Engagement Center, and plot room, gives guests access to areas of the ship that have previously been off limits to the public. During the tour I learned some of the incredible history of the vessel.

Built in 1940, the USS Iowa served the U.S. for more than 50 years. Designated the

“World’s Greatest Naval Ship” due to her big guns, heavy armor, fast speed, longevity and modernization, she kept pace with technology for five decades. During her years of service, the Iowa has welcomed presidents and seen battle.

good vacation can be one of the most relaxing things you can do for yourself.

Whether you prefer the beach, camping, or grilling out in your backyard, down time is something we all need. Unfortunately, we’re not all getting this much needed time to relax. Can you relate?

In the United States, there’s no minimum vacation or holidays that companies are required to provide to workers. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics finds that 77 percent of employers offer paid vacation time. On average, employers give ten days of vacation after one year of employment. The number of vacation days grows based upon tenure. After twenty years, most employees receive twenty days of vacation. In addition to vacation, many companies offer holidays.

It’s interesting to compare our vacation to other places. In France, employees are granted a minimum of five weeks of vacation. In Australia, the minimum is four weeks.

In Belgium, the minimum is twenty-four days. In Denmark, the minimum is five weeks. Now, it’s not to say that there aren’t other countries with smaller vacations. In some areas of Canada, the minimum is ten days, for example.

But, what are we really doing with our two weeks of vacation? You probably guessed it; in many cases, not much. I recently heard an interesting term, “vacation shaming.” It’s an all too familiar idea where employers place negative feelings and shame around the idea of taking time off.

Despite receiving two weeks of vacation each year, many Americans are only taking about half of it, according to a survey conducted by Glassdoor.com.

Even if we are taking vacation time, many of us are staying plugged in. We answer emails, take phone calls, and sometimes attend meetings remotely. There’s a fear of getting into trouble and losing our job while we’re out.

For employees who do choose to take vacation, some companies set rules that limit the options available. For example, a company may have a policy that an employee may not take more than four or five consecutive days in a row.

For those with an international destination in mind, this can really limit the options.

Being successful at work if often tied to being the

best version of yourself that you can be and that requires you to take care of yourself.

Vacation is a great place to start on this goal.

If you’re looking for a new job, do your best to learn about the company’s policy about taking vacation, both official and unofficial. Many online review sites can provide an employee perspective.

Then, don’t forget that vacation time is negotiable – just like salary. When you negotiate your offer letter, know that you can ask for additional time off.

In the long run, taking time for you is more important than any amount of vacation shaming. We all need a break sometimes.

Apaches Running on All Cylinders As New Season Approaches The scorching conditions this summer have most people opting to remain indoors with their air conditioners on full blast.

However, the Apaches of the Arcadia cross country team have already begun training as the new season looms on the horizon.

This year, the Apaches’ ship will be guided by former assistant coach Chris Lee, who replaced Michael Feraco as head coach. As a 2013 Arcadia High School graduate himself, Lee was assistant coach under Feraco for his time as a college undergrad, but spent last season as the head coach at North Torrance High School.

presented itself at his alma mater and he is ready to persevere with the program’s longstanding traditions.

“We graduated a lot of kids on both sides (boys and girls) but our focus has never really changed,”

Lee said. “We’re all about keeping that level of consistency and excellence and try to represent the school and the community well.”

Monrovia Water Polo Aims Higher Than Ever Before While there is popular belief that cats don’t like water, the Wildcats of Monrovia boys’ water polo prepare for one of the most promising seasons in recent years.

Under the tutelage of Kris Williams, who’s entering his second year as head coach after coaching junior varsity for three years, Monrovia looks to make a bigger splash than they ever have before.

“The goal is to do better than last year,” Williams said. “Every year just do something better, something that no one was expecting, and just always trying to progress.”

Meet the Coach: Pasadena City College’s Francisco Cantero ith the start of the season less than one month away, Pasadena City College alumnus Francisco Cantero was named interim head coach of the Lancers women’s soccer team.

“Since I went through this community college path, I told myself that I wanted to be a head coach at a junior college and help the women,” Cantero said.

Cantero is a homegrown talent who grew up playing soccer for most of his life. He attended Pasadena’s own Marshall Fundamental High School and then went on to make the soccer team at PCC where he exceled manning the Lancers’ backline.

His standout play at the community college level earned him a scholarship offer to Kansas Wesleyan University. It was there where he went on to become an NAIA AllAmerican and the conference defender of the year during his senior season.

Although this is Cantero’s first time being a head coach at the collegiate level, this is far from his first rodeo. Since 2011, he’s been a coach at Salina Soccer Club in Kansas, a volunteer assistant coach for the women’s team at Bethany College, and an assistant coach at Holy Names University for both the women’s and men’s team.

Cantero has set out to ensure that his players get the full experience of being a full-time college athlete

because he understands that some of them do want to play at the next level. Along with the high-intensity training sessions, Cantero said he also wants to incorporate regular meetings with the team to establish a strong basis of communication and focus in on their goals.

In terms of play style, Cantero prefers a hybrid of FC Barcelona and Real Madrid, two of the world’s biggest soccer clubs. While he does stress the importance of retaining possession, Cantero also wants his team to be just as lethal on the counterattack.

Despite playing in competitive conference, Cantero is determined to have a winning record and possibly make it to playoffs being that the women’s team hasn’t qualified for the last couple years.

“We’re in a very tough conference but those are the goals that we’ve set and we just have to try to make those things happen,” Cantero said.
