Monrovia Gang Related Murder Suspect Surrenders to Police Alleged shooter, Jeremiah La Croix, gave himself up to Banning PD

H

omicide investigators are continuing their investigation into a murder which occurred Saturday, 12/02/17 at 12:01 AM, at the Gem City Grill in Monrovia.

According to witnesses, the suspects entered the bar shortly before midnight and got into an argument with other patrons inside the bar.

The argument escalated into a fight at which time one of the suspects pulled out a handgun and started shooting. The suspect, a male Hispanic adult, and his companions then ran out of the bar and fled west on Olive Avenue.

Three individuals were struck by gunfire. All three victims were transported to local hospitals for treatment.

One of the victims, Michael Lowe, male Hispanic 43 years old, was pronounced dead at the hospital. The other two victims, a male Hispanic 24 years old, and a male white 24 years old,

2018 and all the new laws that took effect Jan. 1 range from marijuana to ammunition sales to vehicle registration.

Here are some of the bigger laws you should know about as we head into 2018: Minimum wage increase: Businesses with fewer than 26 employees will now pay 50 cents more per hour, raising the minimum hourly pay to $10.50.

Employees that work for companies with 26 or more employees will earn $11 per hour. At 40 hours each week, that's an additional $20 per week.

"The $40 extra that I'm going to make on my paycheck," Sacramento minimum wage earner Maria Cuellar said. "It's going to be gone since I have to pay for my milk, my rent, the gas -- everything is going to go up as well."

The changes are part of SB3, which raises the minimum hourly wage incrementally to $15 by 2022 and 2023.

DMV Reminds Motorists of New 2018 Laws Cannabis Use in Vehicles (SB 65, Hill): This law prohibits smoking or ingesting marijuana or marijuana products while driving or riding as a passenger in a vehicle. The DMV will assign negligent operator point counts for this violation. In addition to the California Driver Handbook, the DMV also will revise the Motorcycle Handbook and the DMV’s website to include information relating to marijuana violations.

Buses and Seatbelts (SB 20, Hill): Beginning July 1, 2018, this law requires a passenger on a bus equipped with seat belts to be properly restrained by a safety belt.

This law also prohibits a parent, legal guardian, or chartering party to transport on a bus, or permit to be transported on a bus, a child who is at least 8 years of age but under 16 years of age, unless they are properly restrained by a safety belt or an appropriate child passenger restraint system that meets federal safety standards. A violation of these provisions is an infraction punishable by a fine.

DUI – Passenger for Hire (AB 2687, Achadjian): Beginning July 1, 2018, this law makes it unlawful

for a person to operate a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.04 percent or more when a passenger for hire is in the vehicle at the time of the offense. This will mean that drivers of passenger for hire, in their personal vehicles, will be held to a higher standard of safety while transporting people.

The DMV will suspend a person’s driver license if a conviction is added to their record. Commercial driver license holders will receive a disqualification.

Parking Violations for Registration or Driver License Renewal (AB 503, Lackey): This law makes changes to a requirement under which vehicle registration renewal and driver license issuance or renewal is not granted for having unpaid parking penalties and fees.

The law creates a process for low-income Californians with outstanding parking violations to repay their fines and penalties prior to the parking violation being reported to the DMV. The law also allows the registered owner of a vehicle to file for Planned Non-Operation status when unpaid parking penalties are on the vehicle’s record. It also allows for someone with outstanding parking penalties and fees, to obtain or renew a driver license.

HOV Decal Program (AB 544 Bloom): Beginning January 1, 2019, this law creates a new decal program to allow certain low emission vehicles to access highoccupancy vehicle lanes, regardless of vehicle occupancy level, for a four-year term. Access to highoccupancy vehicle lanes for vehicles with green and white decals will expire January 1, 2019. Vehicles issued a green or white decal in 2017 or 2018 will be eligible to reapply for a decal in 2019 granting them access to high–occupancy toll lanes until

January 1, 2022.

Disabled Person Parking Placards and Plates (SB 611, Hill): This law makes changes to the administration of the Disabled Person Parking Placard and Disabled Person License Plate Program, including requiring applicants to provide proof of true full name and birthdate.

The law also will limit the number of replacement disabled person parking placards an applicant can request without obtaining a medical certification to four in two years. It also requires the DMV to establish a renewal process that requires applicants to return a renewal notice by mail every six years.

Currently, all permanent disabled placards expire in June 2019 and they are automatically renewed every two years.

The placards expiring in June 2023 will be the first batch of placards subject to renewal. Applicants will not be required to obtain a medical certification as part of the renewal process. For more information about the new law effecting Disabled Person Placard and Plates, visit

Motorcycle Training Courses (AB 1027, Acosta): This law authorizes the DMV to accept a certificate of satisfactory completion of any motorcyclisttraining program approved by the California Highway Patrol in lieu of the required motorcycle skills test. Applicants for an original motorcycle license or motorcycle endorsement under 21 years of age continue to be required to complete a novice motorcyclist-training program.

Firefighter License Plate Program for Surviving Family Member (AB 1338, Low): This law allows a surviving spouse, domestic partner, or child of a deceased firefighter or deceased retired firefighter to independently apply for and receive a California Firefighter Special License Plate for their vehicle.

Private Carriers of Passengers (SB 19, Hill): Beginning July 1, 2018, this law transfers regulatory authority over private carriers of passengers (such as church and youth buses) from the California Public Utilities Commission to the

DMV. Road Maintenance and Rehabilitation Program (SB 1, Beall): Beginning January 1, 2018, the DMV is required to begin collecting at the time of registration or renewal the Transportation Improvement Fee (TIF) ranging from $25 - $175, based on the vehicle’s current value. The law also requires the department, beginning July 1, 2020, to collect a Road Improvement Fee for zero-emission vehicles with a model year of 2020 or later.

The TIF is based on the vehicle’s current market value. Customers with a vehicle renewal notice due on January 1, 2018 and later will include the TIF. ARCADIA Dec. 27 Just before 1:59 a.m., an officer responded to a residence in the 00 block of West Naomi Avenue regarding a burglary report. The officer discovered unknown suspects smashed a rear window, ransacked the home, and fled with an unknown amount of property. No suspects were seen and no witnesses were located.

Shortly after 1:04 p.m., an officer responded to the 200 block of West Camino Real Avenue regarding a mail theft report. A witness reported seeing a Hispanic male, approximately 20 to 30-years-old steal mail from a neighbor’s mailbox. The investigation is ongoing.

At about 7:17 p.m., an officer initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle in the area of Longden Avenue and Holly Avenue during a burglary suppression detail. A records check of the occupants revealed a 23-year-old male from Los Angeles had an outstanding misdemeanor warrant, and a 27-year-old male from Los Angeles had provided the officer with false identifying information and was on felony parole. During a consensual search of the subjects, the officer located burglary tools. The two previously mentioned suspects and a 22-year-old male from Los Angeles and a 23-year-old male from Bakersfield were all arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking. One of the suspects may be linked to a residential burglary that occurred in the City of Arcadia on November 24th. The investigation is ongoing.

Dec. 28

Before 10:32 a.m., an officer responded to the 200 block of West Lemon Avenue regarding the activation of an Arcadia Police Department GPS tracker. Arcadia PD detectives had previously deployed decoy bicycles with tracking devices to combat the increase in bike thefts throughout the city. An investigation revealed a 19-year-old male from El Monte was in possession of the stolen bicycle and GPS tracker. The suspect was arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking.

Around 6:39 p.m., an officer conducted an enforcement stop on a vehicle in the area of Warren Way and Holly

blotters Avenue for having a broken brake light. A records check of all four occupants revealed a 21-year-old male from Los Angeles had an outstanding misdemeanor warrant. During a consensual search of the vehicle, the officer located police scanners, stolen property, and other burglary tools. The three remaining suspects, a 19-year-old male from Los Angeles, and two 20-year-old males from Los Angeles were arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking. The investigation is ongoing.

At about 9:15 p.m., an officer responded to AMF Bowling, 1020 South Baldwin Avenue, regarding a subject causing a disturbance. Upon contacting the 24-year-old male from Altadena, the officer noticed symptoms of alcohol intoxication and determined the suspect was unable to care for himself. He was arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking.

Dec. 29

Just before 4:52 a.m., an officer responded to a business in the 11600 block of Clark Street regarding a burglary report. Surveillance footage revealed two suspects forcibly created an opening in a roll up door, possibly with their vehicle, and fled emptyhanded. The suspects are described as two Hispanic males between 20 and 30-years-old driving a black sedan and a minivan. The investigation is ongoing.

Shortly after 1:01 p.m., an officer responded to the Arcadia Police Department front counter regarding a fraud report. An investigation revealed the victim transferred nearly $5,000.00 for the security deposit and firstmonth’s rent for a house in the 400 block of North First Avenue before realizing the suspect did not actually own the residence and the incident was a scam. The investigation is ongoing.

Dec. 30

At approximately 1:34 p.m., an officer responded to the area of 100 East Huntington Drive regarding a possible robbery report. The officer determined the suspect approached the victim, demanded his skateboard, money, and bicycle as he threatened to hit the victim with a wrench. An officer located the suspect at 7-Eleven, 2 East Duarte Road, and the 45-year-old male from Los Angeles was arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking.

A records check revealed the suspect had two outstanding misdemeanor warrants.

MONROVIA

Dec. 29 At 2:25 a.m., an officer was on patrol in the area of Chestnut and Magnolia when he noticed a suspicious vehicle parked against the curb with the turn signal on and the engine running. The officer approached the vehicle and the subject appeared to be sleeping. He woke the subject and could smell the odor of alcohol on the subject. A second officer arrived to assist and they had the subject step out of the vehicle. As one of the officers conducted a search, he felt a gun in the subject’s waistband. The subject then became combative and a struggle ensued as both officers tried to subdue the subject as he attempted to pull the gun out of his waistband. Additional officers arrived to assist and the suspect was taken into custody.

At 11:49 a.m., an employee from a business in the 1600 block of S. Mountain called police to report a suspicious subject at the store who has committed thefts in the past.

The subject left the store and entered a vehicle in the parking lot. Officers arrived and detained the subject. Further investigation revealed the subject had a recently stolen license plate affixed to his vehicle over his actual license plate. He was also found to have methamphetamine and a drug pipe in his pocket. The suspect was arrested and taken into custody.

At 8:42 p.m., two vehicle burglaries were reported in the 900 block of S. Fifth Avenue. The two vehicles had broken windows. After further investigation and talking to both victims, it appears there were no items taken from the vehicles. The investigation is continuing.

At 9:26 p.m., an officer saw a suspicious subject loitering in a park in the 600 block of S. Shamrock. He conducted a consensual encounter and the subject stated that he had a methamphetamine pipe in his backpack. A consent search revealed a drug pipe in his possession. The subject was arrested for possession of drug paraphernalia.

responded to a solo traffic collision into a parked vehicle at Lemon and Primrose. After investigation, the officer arrested the driver for driving under the influence.

Magnolia, swerving back and forth. A traffic stop was conducted and a DUI investigation began. The subject was determined to be intoxicated and was arrested for DUI.

At 4:26 a.m., officers responded to the report of a solo, rollover, traffic collision in the 200 block of S. Mountain. After investigation, the officer arrested the driver for DUI.

At 7:47 p.m., an officer stopped a female and male on bikes for a vehicle code violation. The female threw something on the ground before stopping. The investigation revealed the female threw a container with a needle and some methamphetamine. She was arrested and taken into custody.

At 2:20 a.m., a hit and run traffic collision was reported in the 700 block of S. Shamrock. Officers arrived in the area and discovered two parked cars that had been hit by another car that fled the scene. The investigation is ongoing.

At 10:22 a.m., an officer responded to a business in the 1600 block of S. Mountain regarding a subject possibly stealing merchandise. The subject and left the store and was in a vehicle in the parking lot. The officer contacted the subject and a computer check revealed he was on parole. A search of the vehicle revealed he was in possession of drug paraphernalia.

While the officer was searching the vehicle, a female approached and identified herself as the registered owner of the vehicle. A computer check of her revealed she had two warrants for her arrest.

Parole issued a hold for the male and both subjects were arrested.

At 1:59 p.m., an employee at a business in the 300 block of W. Huntington called police to report someone had attempted to pass a counterfeit one hundred dollar bill.

The suspect left the bill and left the location prior to the employees calling the police department. The investigation is continuing.

At 2:37 p.m., a caller reported a male subject in the 800 block of S. Magnolia who appeared drunk. The subject reportedly entered a vehicle and drove away. An officer was in the area and saw the vehicle traveling north on

Officers arrived and contacted the subject. The subject was found to be in possession of drug paraphernalia and was arrested.

Dec. 31

At 2:31 a.m., officers responded to the 100 block of W. Duarte on a solo vehicle traffic collision. Upon arrival, officers saw a light pole down across all lanes of Duarte Road from the collision.

The female adult driver was determined to be intoxicated and was arrested for DUI.

At 8:10 a.m., a caller reported a female subject in the street yelling at a male subject, who was driving away. Officers responded and spoke with the female, who exhibited symptoms of being under the influence of narcotics. The female admitted to smoking methamphetamine approximately two hours prior. She was arrested for being under the influence of a controlled substance.

At 1:06 p.m., loss prevention personnel from a business in the 500 block of W. Huntington Drive called police to report a shoplifting incident. Two subjects had concealed merchandise in the waistbands of their pants and walked out of the store without paying. Officers and loss prevention detained the subjects, and further inves-

tigation revealed they had also shoplifted from another store. Both stores desired prosecution. The subjects were arrested and taken into custody.

At 7:43 p.m., a subject who lives in the called police to report subjects attempting to enter his residence. The caller sounded somewhat suspicious and while officers were on their way to the location, dispatch advised that the subject had warrants for his arrest. After the officers determined the scene was clear, the subject was arrested for his warrants. He was later released to the custody of the Azusa Police Department on the warrants.

At 10:50 p.m., an officer was on patrol in the 100 block of E. Colorado and was flagged down regarding a hit and run traffic collision. Officers responded and found a fluid trail from the suspect vehicle, but were unable to track it down. The investigation is continuing.

SIERRA MADRE Dec. 25

A male was contacted in the 200 block of W. Sierra Madre Blvd. at about 1:35 a.m. after showing symptoms of intoxication. It was determined the male was unable to care for himself and placed under arrest for public intoxication. The male was transported to the Pasadena Jail for remand.

Dec. 26

At about 1:11 p.m., officers responded to a medical assist in the 500 block of W. Sierra Madre Blvd. The subjects were in a parked vehicle, intoxicated and injured.

It was later determined they were involved in a hit and run accident in the City of Pasadena. Both subjects were transported from the scene to a local hospital. The vehicle was stored due to it blocking a public sidewalk.

Arcadia Fire Department Doing What They Do Best On Friday, Dec. 29, Engine 107 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to the 200 block of West Huntington Drive on a medical assist. Fire crews arrived to find an assault victim experiencing neck pain after being battered with an object over the back of his head. Paramedics provided advanced life support measures on scene including spinal immobilization precautions, intravenous access, and pain management.

The patient was transported to Methodist Hospital of Southern California for further evaluation and treatment. Arcadia Police

responded for the investigation.

On Saturday, Dec. 30, Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to the 300 block of Sharon Road on a medical assist. Upon arrival, fire personnel evaluated a female patient experiencing shortness of breath. Paramedics provided advanced life support measures on scene including oxygen therapy, 12-lead cardiac monitoring, intravenous access, and drug therapy.

Csarts-Sgv Production Of ‘‘Pippin’’ At Arcadia Performing Arts Center May s. ruiz MayChu@att.net

Students at California School of the Arts-San Gabriel Valley (CSArtsSGV) will display what they’ve learned, as well as their natural talents, when they present an all-school performance of the celebrated musical ‘Pippin’ at the Arcadia Performing Arts Center on January 11 to 13, 2018.

Filled with dance, humor, and soaring songs by Stephen Schwartz (‘Corner of the Sky’, ‘Magic Do’, and ‘Glory’), ‘Pippin’ tells the story of a young person’s journey to find his place in the world. This original production is set with a unique and imaginative steampunk aesthetic, offering a relevant edge and visceral quality that will leave the audience questioning what it truly means to be extraordinary.

Christian Dorey, a ninth grader from Covina, has the role of the leading player. He says, “Back in August when the show was announced

during a CSArts-SGV growth retreat, I felt a spark within me. I was quite excited and decided that I wanted to be part of this show. To set myself apart from the other talented people who were also trying out for the same part as I, I practiced my audition song for quite a while – I made sure I was conveying the spirit of the song and staying in the right key.

Sierra Madre resident and ninth grader, Jessie Ellico Franks, is playing a starring role in this musical.

She describes her experience, “To prepare for the audition, I searched through repertoire books to see if there was a song that fit a character from the show I was interested in and one that was suitable and showed my voice range and acting abilities. For the dance call, I made sure I was warmed up and calm. And I made sure I had a water bottle with me!”

Lily Annino, an 11th grader from Arcadia, is the assistant to the creative team. She talks about

balancing rigorous academics with a busy conservatory schedule, “I utilize office hours a lot. Sometimes I use my lunch time to finish work. I make sure to get all homework done the evening it’s assigned so I don’t have to worry about it on a day with different blocks.”

The choice of ‘Pippin’ came about intentionally explains Jay Wallace, CSArts-SGV’s Chair of Theatre, “We certainly wanted to mount a production that would set us apart from many traditional high schools. But, we needed to make sure that the show would be accessible to our student body, as well as accommodating to our current talent pool.

I wanted something with a bit of flare and energy. And something with an undercurrent of substance and carries a level of relevance.

‘Pippin’ provides so many creative opportunities. To a certain extent, it is a blank canvas. This show allows us to craft our own unique impression and perspective of the universal story of the

search for one’s voice and purpose in life.

Wallace emphasizes, “We expect our Musical Theatre and Acting Conservatory students to be their best each day. We are an ensemble growing together as artists and individuals. We must always be

prepared, be willing to take risks in our work, support one another, and value each opportunity. This is just the beginning of the journey.

But, I look forward to seeing every one of these young artists to achieve their true potential.”

are a source of inspiration for Annino, Dorsey, and Franks. They are an assurance that through their individual hard work and concerted efforts they will one day realize their dreams.

5 New Year’s Resolutions For A Healthier And Happier 2018 Yajen TAN yajen@gimmefit.com

As we blast off into a new year, I’m looking back now to pick apart my mistakes, failures, and discoveries that I’ve been fortunate enough to experience in the past 365 days.

January is the perfect time to adopt and solidify new positive habits to carry on into the new year. These are my five priorities for January.

Choose Healthy Habits, Not Rapid Results The biggest problem that I see in the fitness industry is surprisingly not the baseless supplement claims or manipulative gym salesmen, it’s the misguided belief that one supplement bundle or 12 week program will be the final solution - it never is. If one of your goals this year is to look good

and feel great year round, understand that those two results are byproducts of maintaining select habits and behaviors (thanks Tim Ferris) throughout the year.

Do It For Yourself When you finally decide to truly treat others’ opinion as what they really are, opinions, you’ll relieve yourself of a ton of unnecessary stressors and open up more energy to focusing on your goals. Although I was incredibly happy with myself for starting my business this year, I was met with constant disapproval from certain friends and family. Had I let their opinions take control of my thoughts, I probably would’ve given up long ago.

Eat More Fiber & Protein Aside from playing an integral part in digestion, fiber-dense foods just so

happen to be very rich in nutrients. That means that increasing your fiber intake will not only help improve your digestion, but also help you meet your daily vitamin and mineral needs.

Protein is what the majority of your body’s lean tissue consists of.

So not only is it a super important nutrient for muscle development, but also help retain the lean muscle mass that gives your body that firm, toned look, that you want from a fat reduction program.

Join A Race With Your Friends My friends decided that they wanted to sign up for a Spartan Race together.

I always preach fitness and nutrition as a means to improve one’s quality of life. Depriving yourself of those small pleasures, that give your life meaning, hardly qualifies as improving your quality of life. The key here is moderation. I

always tell people to try and establish a routine of eating well about 85% of the time, so that you won’t regret it when you do decide to give yourself a treat. Now go enjoy a pint and cheers to a happier, healthier, and fit 2018!

still off work and school, just relaxing with friends. City Hall was also uneventful: today’s first Tuesday City Council meeting has been cancelled (in advance) and it was too early for any of the other meeting agendas to be posted.

The Planning desk tells me that there’s lots happening in Old Town, but all of the balls are still in the air: “Frooza” (521 S. Myrtle, where Candy Connection used to be) is still dark, although I have seen some window washing activity, which is always encouraging; the space left by the insurance agent on E. Colorado is still empty with brown-papered windows, and word is the owners are still busy renovating the inside, preparing to list it for lease in the near future; the two large spaces in the 300 block of N. Myrtle are still available, with the old 4th Dimension building still looking for retail or restaurant use, and the 316 building is in limbo again, waiting for a doctor/dentist/ retailer to fill the large, incomplete space.

One very important item of note: January 2nd is traditionally the day folks come back to Old Town and see

one or two empty, or soonto-be empty spaces: not so this year. We’ve known for a couple of months that we are losing Family Affair Music at the end of January in the 500 block, but we didn’t wake up this morning to any more surprises, and for that I am thankful.

When I asked our Planning Department this morning if we’ve had any inquiries involving Old Town, they said just two: one for a marijuana dispensary (which isn’t a legal use in Old Town), and one on-going dilemma about approved uses in the Stelling Building (SW corner of Myrtle and Lemon, extending around the corner to 50 and 100 W. Lemon). The proposed spa plan for that building involved more than 20% massage services, so the plan has been nixed. Still waiting for the second plan.

Next Tuesday is our regularly scheduled MOTAB (Monrovia Old Town Advisory Board) meeting at City Hall (9:30 a.m., January 9thd) and the general public is not only welcomed, but encouraged to attend. There is a Public Comment period set aside to hear items not on the agenda.

Monrovia Home Security System Rebate Program to Start The City Council recently voted to establish a rebate program for Monrovians who install home security systems. This was partly in response to the increase in crime that

we have experienced in California during the past few years.

Monrovia’s Home Security Rebate Program will not be limited to one particular home security

system or one service provider. Instead, residents are eligible for a reimbursement of up to $250 for the purchase and/or installation of any qualifying home security

system.

Shortly the City Staff will complete the details on rebate program the City will begin accepting applications sometime this month.

School districts across the nation have been investing incredible amounts of time and energy into furthering modern education reform, but Arcadia Unified School District (AUSD) has stepped forward to lead the way toward personalized learning for each and every student.

Personalized learning, an innovative, new campaign led by AUSD Superintendent Dr. David Vannasdall, has long been a goal of the district’s many teachers and educational leaders. However, the movement’s push to promote district-wide transparency, community involvement, and student feedback has seen much growth in its recent years — namely, at events such as special idea-sharing Board of Education meetings, Digital Education Stations, December’s Fireside Chat on the “changing landscape of education” and AUSD’s role in creating it.

In May 2017, AUSD utilized a thought-sharing platform called Thought Exchange to facilitate community feedback and encourage student response to the then newly-introduced concept of personalized learning and the attributes of an ideal Arcadia graduate. The month-long survey registered 1,010

participants (139 of which were students), 1,130 “Thoughts”, and 52,952 Stars, which indicate agreement on a Thought.

In early December 2017, AUSD released a comprehensive summary of the results of the survey. The report’s overwhelming amount of responses cumulated in five major principles that participants believed personalized learning ought to constitute: Differentiated Learning With the advanced nature of the courses many Arcadia students seek to take, it’s no surprise that the district offers Advanced Placement (AP) and honors programs at its high school.

However, only the mathematics department offers an accelerated track beginning in middle school, allowing students to advance up to two years ahead of the norm.

Many participants voiced a strong interest in initiating accelerated programs for other subjects like English and science as well.

Class Size and Assistance At a district renowned for its incredible academic achievements, it’s no wonder parents are relocating to Arcadia to secure a top-notch education for their children. As a result, Arcadia High School graduates nearly 1,000 students each year. Despite the record-breaking number of students per grade level, AUSD remains committed to

their goal of keeping teacher to pupil ratios low (ideally 1:15-20) to allow for more in-class participation and closer interactions.

Individual Learning Each child is unique in his or her own way, and the same applies to their learning styles. Personalized learning aims to identify each student’s optimal learning style (auditory, visual, physical, etc.) and apply it in the classroom.

By addressing each individual child’s specific needs, teachers can better help their students reach their maximum potential, both

within the classroom and outside of it.

Students’ Current Skill Assessment Periodic assessments of a student’s growth allow parents and teachers to evaluate a child’s current holistic standing, as opposed to the standard progress report updates.

A student’s strengths and weaknesses can then be more accurately identified, which would ideally lead to targeted personal improvement.

Paradise comes in many forms. Recently it came by way of a charming suite overlooking the Pacific Ocean, a secluded beach, and a delicious, 40-day aged cut of prime steak. In other words, I spent a night at the historic Grande Colonial in La Jolla and dined at the property's renowned NINE-TEN Restaurant & Bar. A friend and I recently escaped to the 100-yr-old Grande Colonial for a memorable seaside getaway. Our adventure began when we checked into a beautiful suite overlooking the ocean. The suite dripped with classic design and elegance. It was like a night at a governor's mansion back in the 1930s or 40s, but with all of the modern luxuries of a AAA Four Diamond Award recipient.

The room was located in the hotel's Colonial Suites building, surrounded by lush gardens and an inviting pool.

Upon entering the suite, we encountered an entertaining room with comfortable lounge chairs and an office area with desk and free highspeed Internet, a Keurig coffee

Paradise at Grande Colonial Hotel in La Jolla maker, and a large HD TV. There was also a sleeping area with two queen beds, with goose down comforters; a dressing room with double sinks and a walk-in closet; and a bright bathroom with classic, black and white checkered tiling. The room was highlighted by huge old-fashioned windows that opened wide to let in cool sea breezes and offer magnificent views of La Jolla’s beach and rocky coves.

Once acquainted with the suite, we explored the 93-room boutique hotel and grounds. Opened in 1913 as La Jolla’s first hotel, the Grande Colonial started as an apartment / hotel. It soon added a pharmacy run by the father of actor Gregory Peck, who grew up in La Jolla. In coming years, the hotel would host notables such as Charlton Heston, Groucho Marx, Jane Wyatt, Eve Arden, Pat O’Brien and David Niven.

Throughout its 100 years, the five-story hotel has seen numerous upgrades and owners, but has always kept its signature Colonial revivalstyle architecture and prominent corner location. The hotel's most recent renovation was to its signature dining spot, the NINE-TEN Restaurant & Bar, which is located

next to the lobby.

Last September the restaurant opened after a $300,000 upgrade. The result is a new upscale dining spot with modern vibe, and colors infused with emerald green and light wood, and a stone tiled floor. The design focal point is a vibrant and locally inspired ocean and fauna wall panorama created by renowned artist Dana Montlack.

While the décor is refreshing and enticing, the real star of the restaurant is the food.

Led by award-winning Chef Jason Knibb and Pastry Chef Jose Alonzo III, the place specializes in a farm-to-table philosophy and features a harvest from local artisan farmers where produce is selected daily for the restaurant’s seasonal menus.

Our meal at NINE-TEN began with grilled octopus, with haricot verts and Spanish chorizo relish, whipped hummus, sherry vinaigrette, and spiced potato chips. For the main course I enjoyed an incredible 40-day aged prime rib-eye steak with mashed potatoes, onion rings and Japanese peppers - all on unique plate made from a sliced tree ring. My friend devoured the Alaskan Halibut,

with a summer succotash of corn, squash, zucchini, fava beans, dried cherry tomatoes, chanterelle mushrooms, fennel pollen and corn dashi emulsion.

After dinner, we had a drink in the restaurant bar and then relaxed in the Jacuzzi before retiring for the evening.

In the morning we walked to the La Jolla Underwater Park, a 6,000-acre tideland area of rocky reefs, kelp beds, sand flats, and submarine canyons.

The park is naturally a popular destination for colorful fish, snorkelers, scuba divers and kayakers.

Near the Underwater Park is the Children’s Pool, where scores of adorable harbor seals can be found lounging on the sand inside a beautiful cove.

This place was recently named

by TripAdvisor as one of the "Top 10 Wonderfully Unique Beaches" in the world.

If 2017 left you feeling disappointed at work, today is the perfect day to start turning things around in 2018.

How many times did you think the following to yourself? If only I work a little harder, my boss will recognize my value. Next year, I really will get a decent raise, and a promotion. I’m really not happy, but I have no other choice.

If you’ve had any of these thoughts, it sounds like 2018 is your year. Let’s face the facts. Your boss may recognize your value, or may continue to take advantage of your hard work. And, you may get a decent raise next year, or you may get just two percent (or less). Staying at the same organization often yields the same poor results.

If you’re ready to turn over a new leaf, the first thing to realize is that you do have choices. Continuing to go to work each day to earn a stable income is a great first choice. Beginning to look for a new job before you’re ready

to run from your current job is another great choice. If possible, continue to go to your existing job while you find a replace job. This will ensure you have the time to look and make the best decision for you. After all, you don’t want to trade one bad job for another. That’s not what this year is about!

The great thing about landing a new job is that your new boss will get a chance to hire you. They’ll pick you.

What I’m trying to say is, often if you’ve been with a company for a few years, you end up with a new boss than the person who originally hired you. That new boss may or may not really buy into your work. They might not choose to hire you again if they had the choice. If you feel like you’re experiencing Groundhog Day around raises and recognition, this could be why.

Plus, let’s be honest.

Companies are more motivated to offer larger sums of money to new hires than they are to existing employees.

Bosses rarely want to pay more to do the same work you’ve already been doing for less.

I get it. The entire thing is a bummer. Interviewing is stressful and full of rejection.

Moving to a new company is full of a lot of chance. It could be better or worse than where you are now. But, if where you are now really isn’t working, it’s probably worth it. Once you decide what’s best for you, create a plan of attack for 2018. Write down your goals to make them real. And, begin to work on them each day.

Change isn’t immediate.

It’s a slow process. But, with time and effort, it will happen.

You’ll find yourself happier, working for someone who appreciates you, and possibly even making more money in 2018.

Rose Bowl Proves Pasadena is Still the Capital of the College Football World Georgia tops Oklahoma in Thriler

The Rose Bowl, the Granddaddy of Them All, the most prestigious event in college athletics, a Pasadena staple. The 104th Rose Bowl game, a college football semifinal matchup between the University of Georgia Bulldogs and the University of Oklahoma Sooners, was unlike any before it, yet it was the same in many other ways.

It was the first Rose Bowl game to ever go to overtime. It was the first

matchup ever between Oklahoma and Georgia, despite each school fielding a team for over 120 years. It was the first Rose Bowl appearance for Oklahoma in 15 years, and the first for Georgia in 75.

The game was different. There was no Pac 12 team, there was no Big 10 team. Still, so much was the same, and so much was familiar. The setting was perfect, as every blade of grass was perfectly in place, and every glance at the mountains brought a sense of calm. And the football was brilliant.

It was a clash of styles.

Early on, Oklahoma’s wide open offense, led by Heisman trophy winner Baker Mayfield, stole the show. Rodney Anderson was a battering ram at Running Back, while Mayfield and Marquise “Hollywood” Brown took to the air. Though the Sooners seemed to be firmly in control as the half neared, a poorly executed squib kick led to three points for the Bulldogs before half, as Rodrigo Blankenship hit a 55 yard field goal to bring the score to 31-17 at the break. The action was just getting started.

If the 1st half belonged to the Sooners, the 3rd quarter unquestionably belonged to the Bulldogs.

Georgia’s defense stiffened, and Nick Chubb and Sony Michel pounded away on the ground. Quarterback Jake Fromm hit timely passes, and seemingly in the blink of an eye, everything changed.

Oklahoma’s 17 point lead was gone, and heading to the 4th, the score was tied at 31.

One minute in to the 4th quarter, Georgia took the lead for the first time, but the Heisman trophy winning Quarterback

and his Sooners would respond.

With 8:47 to play, Oklahoma tied the score on an 11 yard pass from Mayfield to Dimitri Flowers. Less than two minutes later, momentum shifted once again. With Georgia driving, star Running Back Sony Michel fumbled, and Steven Parker scooped the loose ball and returned it for a touchdown. Six minutes later, Nick Chubb scored himself, and the game would go to overtime.

In the first OT period, both kickers knocked in short field goals, and the game went to a second OT.

Oklahoma had the ball first, but their Pasadena dreams soon turned into a nightmare.

Austin Siebert’s short field goal attempt was blocked, and Sony Michel ran in a touchdown for Georgia minutes later. The game was over. The brilliant season for Oklahoma ended in heartbreak, and the magical season for Georgia continues. While things may have been different at the Rose Bowl on January 1, 2018 than ever before, one eternal truth remains- Pasadena is the capital of the college football world.

Arcadia Apaches Basketball Starts Season with 2-2 Record

The Arcadia Apaches boys basketball team is not like many other local teams.

They haven’t filled their schedule with tournaments throughout December, and they haven’t traveled across Southern California to play in steamy gyms every weekend.

Instead, they practiced.

Arcadia didn’t begin their

season until December 19, a win against a solid Monrovia team on the road.

The Apaches only have one preseason tournament on their schedule, and the games took place just after Christmas.

On December 27, AHS took on Rio Mesa High School in the 54th annual Ventura Kiwanis Tournament.

The balanced attack of the Apaches was enough to hold off the two man show put on by the

Spartans’ Shulton Tobin and Jonathan Larson, who combined for 48 points.

The next two games would not go as well, however.

On the 28th, Arcadia lost their first game of the season, an overtime heartbreaker against Dos Pueblos, and the next day, they fell to Oxnard 62-50.

Arcadia enters 2018 with a 2-2 record and begins Pacific League play with dreams of a title.

The early season has been up and down for Monrovia boys basketball. Under the guidance of Head Coach Randy Hare, the Wildcats began the season with a 5-5 record before Christmas.

While most students were spending the Holidays relaxing, the boys basketball team was playing. On December 26, the Wildcats took on Westmark High School

in the first game of the Monrovia Tournament. It was no contest. The Wildcats cruised to a 60 point win, with every player seeing time on the court. Three days later, Monrovia dropped a game against Summit High School in Fontana 62-50.

As 2017 is now in the past, the Wildcats look to rack up wins in 2018.

League play begins on January 10, and the Wildcats will once again have a singular goal of winning the Rio Hondo League and making a push in the CIF Division 3A playoffs.
