The annual Salute to Seniors Luncheon sponsored by the Arcadia Rotary Club will be held on Tuesday, May 9, from 11:30 a.m. - 1:30p.m. at the Arcadia Community Center, 365 Campus Drive. At this special event, the Arcadia Rotary Club along with the City Council, Senior Commissioners, and other guests will honor Joyce Platt, the City of Arcadia 2017 Senior of the Year! Tickets will be distributed beginning Tuesday, March 28, at 7:30am, limit two tickets per person.

The 2017 Senior of The Year is Joyce Platt. Joyce has been a long time teacher and volunteer in the Arcadia community. On April 29, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., the City of Arcadia will host its 19th annual Ask-A-Lawyer Program in celebration of national Law Day. This event is meant to help the people of the City get their questions answered for free by volunteer attorneys. The event will be held at the Arcadia Public Library, 20 West Duarte Road.

“For the 19th year in a row, local attorneys will volunteer their time to provide assistance to members of our community with their legal problems. One on one consultation is available where legal guidance and expert legal help will be provided. This is a wonderful annual resource for our residents” said Mayor Tom Beck, an attorney by profession, according to a press release.

Portantino (D – La Cañada Flintridge) had the privilege of honoring ten exemplary women from Senate District 25 in the courtyard of Pasadena City Hall. The California State Legislature first recognized March as Women’s History Month in 1987 and has continued the tradition. Each year members of the State Legislature recognize the exceptional women in their district with a celebration commemorating their efforts.

Weekend Wanderings: Crawling the Gold Line

By Susan Motander Last weekend, John Wilson led an intrepid group of Arcadia Rotarians (and a few wives) on a pub-crawl along the Gold Line. We wandered through the Arts District, stopped at the Del Mar Station in Pasadena and finally returned to Arcadia with a final stop at Mt. Lowe Brewery within walking distance of the station there. Fortunately, there was a wide selection of food at most of these stops so it was not a day of too many pitchers and not enough pizza for this group.

With the exception of the stop in Arcadia, parking is very limited in these areas, so using the Gold Line is a great alternative and a round trip ticket is only $3.50 on the weekends, a bargain compared to the stress of finding parking (not to mention the cost there). And one gets to feel self-righteous about using public transportation – not to mention, it is rather fun to go with a group. And a diverse group we were: a retired pharmacist, a Superior Court judge, a businessman, and the executive director of the Boys and Girls Club and three wives with equally diverse occupations.

With part of the group boarding the train in Monrovia and meeting up at the Arcadia Station with most of the rest of the group, we took off on our crawl. First stop was the Arts District/Little Tokyo station of the Gold Line (one

Here the list is prodigious with 18 selections on the day we visited. As a lover of dark beers (that for the most part have lower IBUs – a bitterness measurement), I was delighted with a wide selection of darker brews. Here the group

again used tasters to try more selecions. A favorite of many of us was Dahlia, a dark Baltic Porter (obviously a tribute, of sorts, to the historic and famous Black Dahlia unsolved murder. Again those behind the bar are your best guide in making your selections.

beyond Union Station) from there it was a straight walk down Alameda to our first brewery, Angel City. With the lights and traffic in your favor, the walk is only about 4-5 minutes.

This stop had one of the widest selections of beer styles, with everything from IPAs (India Pale Ale) and Lagers to Wheat Beers and Amber Ales, all the way to a Rauchbier, a smoked beer that, as the name indicates, originated in Germany. As with most of our stops, the brewery offered tasting flight of 4 oz. pours. Most of us

opted for a flight in order to experience more of their offering. Since we had varied palates, the reviews differed.

I found several in my favorite styles. I suggest you talk to the bartenders and explain your preferences.

The taproom is a bit of an open barn and a bit drafty so a jacket may be wise in cooler weather. While there is no kitchen at the brewery, there is a schedule on their website of the food trucks that appear at there. When we visited it was gourmet tacos. POLICE BLOTTERS ARCADIA March 21 Around 10:57 a.m., an officer responded to the front counter of the Arcadia Police Department regarding a fraud report. The victim stated an unknown suspect fraudulently opened a bank account and cellular account in her name. The victim does not know how the suspect obtained her personal information.

Just before 8:12 p.m., an officer responded to a residence in the 1000 block of English Oaks Drive regarding a bicycle theft report. The officer discovered the suspect stole the victim’s unlocked bicycle from the side of his residence. A short time later, the victim found the bike for sale on Craigslist. The investigation is ongoing.

March 22

Shortly after 4:13 a.m., an officer responded to Honey Boba, 1 W. Duarte Road, regarding a burglary report.

An investigation revealed unknown suspect(s) pried open the front door, causing the alarm to activate. No loss was reported, no suspects were seen, and no witnesses were located.

At about 5:06 a.m., an officer responded to the Arcadia Police Department regarding a vandalism report.

Earlier in the morning, officers arrested the suspect for an outstanding warrant.

Upon release from the Arcadia City Jail, the suspect attempted to enter a secure area of the department parking lot and was seen damaging the PD landscaping, irrigation system, and a light control box at the City soccer field. The 27-year-old female

from Los Angeles was transported to a local facility and was placed on a 72-hour hold for mental evaluation.

March 23

At approximately 4:43 a.m., an officer responded to the Arcadia Par 3 Golf Course, 620 E. Live Oak Ave., regarding a burglary alarm activation. An investigation revealed the unknown suspect(s) cut the chain securing an exterior gate, pried open the front door, opened the maintenance garage rollup door, and fled with various tools. The investigation is ongoing.

Around 11:06 a.m., an officer responded to the 800 block of Arcadia Avenue regarding a vehicle illegally parked in the roadway. Upon contacting the driver, the officer detected signs of drug use. During a consensual search of the vehicle, the officer located a meth pipe in the suspect’s pocket. A records check of the 46-yearold male from Pasadena revealed he had an outstanding misdemeanor warrant. He was arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking.

March 24

At about 3:42 p.m., an officer responded to Macy’s, 400 S. Baldwin Ave., regarding a petty theft report.

The officer discovered the 26-year-old female from Duarte concealed numerous items of clothing before exiting the store, failing to make payment. The suspect was cited and released in the field due to medical issues.

Just before 10:00 p.m., an officer responded to the 24 Hour Fitness parking lot, 125 N. First Ave., regarding a vehicle burglary report.

The officer determined an unknown suspect smashed the driver side front window, stole the victim’s wallet, and fled. No suspects were seen and no witnesses were located.

March 25

Shortly after 6:12 p.m., officers responded to the 100 block of North Santa Anita Avenue regarding a vehicle burglary in progress. Officers discovered the suspect had forcefully removed the convertible top’s rear window, entered the vehicle, and was rummaging through the victim’s belongings when the victim found her. The 38-year-old female from Arcadia was arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking. A records check also revealed she had three outstanding misdemeanor warrants.

Around 9:46 p.m., officers responded to a residence in the 900 block of Arcadia Avenue regarding a domestic dispute. Officers discovered both the male and female provided conflicting stories about the argument, had visible injuries, and both admitted to being under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

The 54-year-old female and 45-year-old male, both from Arcadia, were arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking.

MONROVIA

March 25 At 2:01 a.m., a female subject walked into the police station lobby and was waiting for her friend, who had been arrested for warrants, to be released. While waiting in the lobby, an officer saw her drinking alco-

hol from a bottle. The officer contacted her and told her to pour out the alcohol outside.

When she walked outside the station, she tried to drink more whiskey from the bottle, but forgot the cap was on.

The officer determined she was too intoxicated to care for her own safety and she was arrested for being drunk in public and held for a sobering period.

At 2:04 a.m., an officer was providing extra patrol to a business parking lot in the 900 block of West Huntington when he saw an unoccupied vehicle that looked like it had been ransacked. He ran the license plate and it returned stolen out of Arcadia.

The vehicle was recovered.

At 1:47 p.m., three vehicles were involved in a rear-end collision at the intersection of Mayflower and Huntington. Three subjects from the accident complained of pain and were treated by paramedics. The driver that caused the collision was driving on a suspended license. He was cited and his vehicle was towed for being unregistered.

March 26

At 12:50 a.m., an officer was driving in the 400 block of West Huntington when he saw a suspicious vehicle. He conducted a computer check of the vehicle, which revealed it had been reported stolen.

Officers responded to assist and a high-risk traffic stop was conducted. Two suspects were taken into custody without incident. During a search of the vehicle incident to arrest, evidence of fraud and stolen property were recovered.

At 1:12 a.m., an officer conducted a traffic stop for a vehicle code violation in

the 100 block of West Duarte Road. The driver was determined to be driving on a suspended driver’s license. During a consensual search of the vehicle, a baggie of heroin and a needle belonging to the passenger were recovered.

The passenger was arrested.

At 3:46 a.m., an officer was dispatched to the area of Chestnut and Magnolia regarding a male subject breaking into a vehicle. The officer arrived and found a subject lying inside of a vehicle. The subject was detained.

The owner of the vehicle responded and completed a private person’s arrest for vehicle tampering. The suspect was arrested without incident.

At 2:21 p.m., a female subject was reported for taking beer from a location in the 700 block of East Huntington without paying for it. The suspect stayed at the location in a vehicle and was detained by officers. A computer check revealed she also had a warrant for her arrest.

She was arrested for the theft and the warrant.

At 2:49 p.m., a fight in progress between a male and female was reported in the 100 block of East Lemon. Officers arrived and detained both parties involved in the fight. The two are involved in a dating relationship. During the investigation, it was determined the female subject was the primary aggressor.

She was arrested for domestic battery.

SIERRA MADRE March 19

A report of a single car collision was reported at about 8:16 p.m. in the Au-

burn Parking Lot. After the investigation was concluded, it was determined that he driver was driving under the influence. The driver was arrested and transported to the Pasadena Jail for booking.

The case has been forwarded to DA’s office.

March 21

A resident reported that an apparent hit and run occurred in the 700 block of Canyon Crest between noon and 2:30 p.m. The victim stated that there was a truck in the area that may have struck her vehicle and left after the vehicle was struck. The case was forwarded to detectives.

March 24

An alert resident noticed a suspicious vehicle leave the area of Los Rocas Drive and Sturtevant Drive at about 2 a.m. driving recklessly on Grandview Ave and called SMPD. Responding officers witnessed the vehicle commit several traffic infractions on Baldwin Ave. Officers conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle and interviewed the three occupants. The driver was placed under arrest for reckless driving and transported to Pasadena Jail for booking. The two occupants were released with the vehicle at the scene. The case has been sent to the DA’s office for filing considerations.

Officers were dispatched to the 200 block of Park Avenue for a theft from a vehicle report. Victim stated that between 8 p.m. the night before until 9 a.m. her purse was missing from the front seat of her car. It appears that an unknown suspect(s) entered her unlocked car and took her purse. The case was forwarded to detectives for a follow-up.

Free Tuition to Eligible Students Through ‘PCC Promise’ Starting this fall, high school graduates in the San Gabriel Valley will be able to attend Pasadena City College without paying tuition through a new program known as the PCC Promise.

The program is the latest in a growing number of similar programs at two-year colleges around the country designed to give every student access to a college education. As tuition in the CSU and UC systems has skyrocketed by as much as 400 percent over the past 20 years, vastly outpacing inflation, the PCC Promise intends to lower barriers to ensure that the benefits of college attendance remain available to students of all backgrounds.

The PCC Promise is a last-dollar scholarship program, which means it meets any funding need remaining after federal and state aid programs and private scholarships have been applied. The program covers students’ credit fees, comparable to tuition, which are paid on every unit for which the student registers. Funding will be provided to each individual student for one academic year.

The program will be available to students beginning in the Fall 2017 semester.

Eligibility guidelines and program parameters are subject to change.

Dear Editor, I read your article on Verizon’s efforts to install a new cell phone tower in Arcadia -3/22/17.

The photo on the front page of the Arcadia Weekly is very unfair to Verizon. This photo.is not of a cell phone antenna installation. Most of the antennas in the photo have nothing to do with cell phone communications. This many towers and anten¬nas are usually found on mountain tops -- our Mt. Wilson for example.

Letter to the Editor: Reader Responds to ‘Monrovia Plans to ‘Take Back’ Library Park’ Dear Editor: During my childhood in Mexico City sixty-plus years ago, our family often visited the town’s main park to enjoy a picnic lunch. And my mother (of blessed memory) always made sure to put extra food in the picnic basket, knowing that mothers with hungry children would gather near us -- not to beg (they were too proud for that), but to gratefully accept the food

we offered them. It was a common sight back then (and still is I’m sure) to see many poor and homeless people living on the streets in Mexico City.

So when I read the lead article “Monrovia Outlines Plans to ‘Take Back’ Library Park” in last week’s Monrovia Weekly, deep pangs of sorrow haunted my memory.

Forgive me if mine is an unfair comparison, but Monrovia’s plans remind me of Donald Trump’s “taking back America,” and similar remarks voiced by those who wish certain groups didn’t exist at all.

I could understand if our city’s desire was to take back Library Park from prostitutes, drug dealers, or someone who threatens passersby ...but from the homeless whose hardships most of us can’t even imagine?!!

Couldn’t we who sleep under a roof and have plenty to eat, accept a few inoffensive homeless in our midst? Oh, and instead of looking away when our paths cross, why not give them a smile?

Let’s also never forget that Jesus himself was homeless: “The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.”

‘Why Are We Waging War On Coyotes?’

“Dear Editor, How did coyotes become public enemy No. 1? These resilient, intelligent survivors should garner our respect and admiration, but instead they’re targeted and killed in hideous ways.

Coyotes are a fundamental part of our urban environment—they’re our neighbors, really—and, like sparrows and raccoons, can be found everywhere in North America, including trying to survive, despite the odds, in metropolitan areas like Los Angeles and New York City.

According to author Dan Flores, who wrote the excellent Coyote America: A Natural & Supernatural History, coyotes are now the most common large wildlife species most Americans will ever see.

You’re far more likely to spot a coyote than our national bird, the bald eagle, which is now rare because of our murderous ways and whose decimation should serve as a cau-

tionary tale for our treatment of coyotes.

The war on coyotes is a terrible thing. There is no end to the ways humans have found to exterminate these beautiful canines, including by trapping them in wire snares, shooting them and poisoning them with strychnine (along with any other unfortunate “non-target” animal who happens to take the bait).

In Southern California alone, the cities of Carson, Glendora, Rolling Hills, Seal Beach and Torrance are targeting coyotes—even though the state’s own wildlife department has found that trapping is an ineffective long-term solution to controlling their population.

Recently, residents of Arcadia, California, expressed concerns about the cruelty of using neck and leg snares to trap and then kill coyotes, but officials ignored them. PETA has filed a lawsuit to stop this plan.

Every year since 2001, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service has killed approximately 35,000 coyotes by shooting them from planes and helicopters. Sheep and goats have been fitted with collars containing the gutwrenching poison 1080 so that when coyotes attack, they’ll bite into the collar and die.

It is outrageous knowing that even today, there are still “no limit” coyote-killing contests with prizes for the most tails turned in. And if you travel down a backroad in rural Oklahoma or Texas, don’t be surprised if you see dead coyotes hanging from fences.

Coyotes are smart enough to recognize their enemy: They typically flee rather than having anything to do with humans. They’ve learned to be wary—and rightfully so. But among themselves, they wrestle and yip and howl and carry on. (Flores calls their song our “original national anthem.”)

They keep tabs on each other and love to play.

Even though coyotes provide natural rodent control (their food of choice is rodents), whose fault is it really when they venture down the hillsides in search of easy pickin’s? People who let their cats roam outdoors, where innumerable dangers can easily befall them, or who leave food out for feral cat colonies, are sending coyotes an engraved invitation. Why should they be killed simply for trying to live to see another day?

Our wild neighbors have far more to fear from us than we do from them. It’s time to recognize animals’ rightful place in the world and learn to coexist in peace.

‘King Lear:’ Complex, Relevant, Captivating

lassical repertory company A Noise Within, now celebrating an illustrious 25 years of gracing audiences with quality theatre, has opened their latest iteration of the William Shakespeare play “King Lear.”

For those unfamiliar with this work, the play follows the aging king of Britain, Lear, and his spiral into madness and journey to redemption. It all starts when he decides to divvy up his kingdom among his three daughters. But, once he relinquishes his power to the sycophantic and selfish Goneril and Regan, while shunning his only honest daughter, Cordelia, what ensues is both a man and a kingdom thrust into chaos both on the mental and physical levels.

Certainly, as with many Shakespeare plays, the material could have been quickly dismissible as uninteresting and inaccessible high art

by today’s general audience.

But, A Noise Within, as they do with many of their productions, offers a show that really pulls you in and holds you for the duration because of strong direction from Julia Rodriguez-Elliott and powerhouse performances from her husband Geoff Elliott and the cast he leads.

Throughout, Geoff Elliott, who plays Lear, exhibits great dedication to both his character and his craft. His performance is quite detailed, nuanced and entertaining, one that doesn’t just rely on the typical portrayal of a man going cuckoo, ranting on about the nonsensical. As he has done in past productions such as “All My Sons” and “A Christmas Carol,” Elliott loses himself in his tragic character, making sure that even the slightest gesture is as true as possible.

Similarly, the cast, many of whom are regular collaborators of the company, truly

deliver performances that only enhance the theatre going experience. For example, the three daughters, played by Trisha Miller, Arie Thompson and Erika Soto, are never flat portrayals, but rather multifaceted, even when Miller and Thompson perform the scene in which they give empty words of love and praise to their ailing father. In lesser hands, such a

scene would be hammed up, on the nose, insistently insincere. But, Miller and Thompson present characters who may at first even actually love their father, even if they eventually betray him and leave him to his madness. In short, they’re complicated, and not just good guys or bad guys.

And this leads to the final reason that this “King Lear”

is so impressive: namely, the company’s ability to make the play relevant, and powerfully personal, which was intentional, confessed director Julia Rodriguez-Elliott. According to Rodriguez-Elliott, this interpretation heavily considers parallels between Lear’s psychological predicament, along with the family turmoil that ensues, and the experiences of the growing

number of modern day families with members suffering from dementia. Such efforts create incredible sympathy for Lear and his daughters, however selfish, insensitive or crazy they may be at times. In a sense, Lear and his daughters are us... if we were royalty and had massive armies at our command.

When we see Lear, we see our fathers, mothers, grandparents, uncles as they age out of their societies. And when we see his daughters, we see our cousins, siblings. Ourselves. And with that, “King Lear” captivates and haunts you well after the lights have gone black and final bows are taken.

‘Wrinkle,’ ‘Belle’ in Repertory at Sierra Madre Playhouse

hen two dramas are presented in repertory, one of the huge challenges is to have the stage settings easily interchangeable as the plays appear on alternate performances. With A “Wrinkle in Time” and “The Belle of Amherst" having such contrasting themes-from galactic, dark space in Wrinkle to a poet recluse’s 1800s world, her solitary room - adapting the settings was particularly daunting.

The Playhouse’s set constructers: Todd McCraw, Steven Barr, Trifecta Scenic, Zayra Lobo and Evan O’Donnel accomplished this with striking success.

The contrast between the two plays—“Wrinkle” and “Belle”—now playing in repertory at the SMP could scarcely be more disparate in theme.

A Wrinkle in Time Lifted from the pages

of the ever-popular, young adult fantasy, “A Wrinkle in Time” comes alive at the Sierra Madre Playhouse.

“It was a dark and stormy night…” when Meg joins her super-brilliant, 5-year-old brother Charles Wallace and their mom for a midnight cup of cocoa. As so often before, they talk sadly of their father, a scientist who mysteriously disappeared two years before.

How can they find him?

Charles is brainy and also seems to have some supernatural powers. He has made a connection with Mrs. Whatsit, who helps the children and their friend, Calvin, bend time and space to search for their Dad on other planets. And how do you bend time and space?

Through “a wrinkle in time,” of course!

add flavor to the otherworldliness atmosphere.

The setting, lighting and sound are such integral parts of this production that it seems as if they are characters, too. A tall, fabricated wall has lines drawn on it to indicate doors and windows through which characters pop out every now and then. Dramatic lighting designed by Rebecca Hairston is a real mood-creator, as is the original music by Sean Paxton. Sound design is by Christopher Moscatiello.

During the season, more than 2,000 students attend through arrangements with their schools.

why that satisfies her completely, as it’s all she needs.

A quilt loosely covers her single bed. She has a settee and chair, and a solid wooden coat rack. Green foliage adorns her wire plant-stand—green when she remembers to water them, she says, smiling conspiratorially, A chimneyed gas lamp provides light, and a pendulum clock reminds her of time, although we sense that she lives more to her own rhythm than to the tick of any clock. Emily’s solitary proclivities have earned her the title of “The Belle of Amherst.”

Every now and then, Emily sits at her desk to jot down a quick inspiration for another of her poems. She’s written hundreds of them, often on slips of scratch paper or candy bar wrappers.

While she writes because of her own love affair with words, she confesses she would like others to find joy

in them, too. Only a handful has been published.

While she clearly remains Emily throughout the one-woman show, Ferrell often segues briefly into a dozen or so other “voices.”

Similarly, while she narrates her story she manages to glide into one of her poems so slyly you have to be aware or you may miss them. Ferrell Marshal’s nuances of facial expressions are remarkable at conveying a gamut of emotions— whether remembering schooldays or anticipating a publishers’ visit, describing her garden or her muchloved dog Carlo.

Ferrell not only stars in Belle, but also co-produces with Christian Lebano and Estelle Campbell. Todd Nielsen directs.

These local attorneys are experts in all legal fields ranging from: tax, immigration, real estate, landlord-tenants issues, employee’s rights, family, and government benefits law. They will accept “walk-up” appointments for 20 minutes each. Residents should be advised, however, that the volunteer attorneys will not be taking cases at this event.

Law Day is a national holiday that traditionally falls on May 1, also recognized as May Day and International Workers’ Day. It was approved

by Congress in 1961 as a day to show the country’s dedication to the rule of law. Ever since then, every U.S. President has made a proclamation expressing that dedication. The City of Arcadia, however, settles for a comfortable Saturday with free legal advice.

Gary Kovacic, former mayor of Arcadia and lifelong attorney, inaugurated the event back in 1999.

“Based on my life-long connection with the City of

Arcadia, and my interest in and experience with the Constitution and the laws that protect our rights and liberties, once I was on the Arcadia City Council I thought it would be a great idea to celebrate Law Day with an annual event in Arcadia that provided free legal advice to area residents in need of assistance. In 1999, I started the event and have chaired it ever since,” recounted Kovacic in an email to Beacon Media News.

Kevel Education Uses Different Approach to Math Tutoring

By May S. Ruiz For students of all ages, one of the most challenging subjects to learn is math. And with most schools’ increased focus on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math), it’s crucial to provide these kids with the tools to help

them understand and learn math.

In the San Gabriel Valley, there are several companies offering STEM tutoring. A recent addition is Kevel Education which was founded four months ago by Gao Jun, Kevin

Yu, and Lydia Zu. “It all started with California Table Tennis Club, which we established four years ago offering weekend and after-school sports program for young kids in the area. Students would bring their homework to the club,

and from time to time we saw them struggling. So we began helping them.”

“We thought that since we were already teaching table tennis, we might as well extend our offering to include math instruction,” Yu relates.

These kids can learn both table tennis and math in one place, making it convenient for parents.”

The three founders’ own experience with math involved memorization of formulas, which isn’t exactly fun so they took a different tutoring method. Yu explains, “Most Asians learn by rote; it’s fast but there’s no long-term retention. When forced to memorize so many formulas, anyone will hate math. But we believe learning math can be quite fun. Instead of just teaching children the formula to solve problems we show them the reasoning behind the principle.”

Zu elucidates. “I use logical reasoning to explain the formula and show students why some math problems are solved in a certain fashion.

That way, they make sense of the problem first then can figure out how to go about deciphering it. The method one teaches math makes all the difference in the world.”

in certain steps they will fall behind. Our tutoring service has developed an assessment test for students so we can see their weakness and work on it. Our tutoring format inspires interest, develops problem solving abilities, and uses creative ways to approach a challenge – life skills that will help them succeed later.”

Kevel Education instructors concentrate on helping students in sixth through twelfth grade because they’ve observed it’s when kids get into more advanced math that they struggle. They currently use their office at the Rosemead location of the California Table Tennis Club to tutor

students, but also offer on–demand, private tutoring in coffee shops, libraries or public parks in Pasadena, Arcadia, and nearby cities.

According to research there will be more than one million unfilled STEM jobs in 2020. Now, more than ever, teachers have to find ways to make these courses stimulating and exciting to successfully graduate students to fill those vacancies.

So confident are these three entrepreneurs their method will attract more students that future plans include opening five more tutoring locations in five years.

he past few years have been the era of the reboot.

“Gilmore Girls,” “X-Files” and more have all come back to us through popular demand. Yet Bear Essentials Gift Shoppe in Arcadia has achieved a much rarer phenomenon: the retail reboot.

Before its premature closing three years ago, Bear Essentials had been a staple in Arcadia’s community. Locals Susan and Dennis Pink started the business in 1983 after Susan gained success selling handmade goods at craft shows around town.

Slowly, they ramped up business until the time came for their very own storefront.

“In 1995 we opened our first store on Huntington Drive in Arcadia,” said Susan Pink. “We were at that location for 20 years.”

But even established businesses can fall prey to the economy. Pushed out of their original location by soaring rent costs, they closed their doors in July 2014. Yet the couple wasn’t ready to give in.

“One month after clos-

ing, we went back to our roots and started doing craft and gift shows again at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Arcadia,” said Pink, who still holds shows at the hotel four times a year. “At the continuous request of our customers, we opened our new location on Foothill Boulevard in October of 2015.”

It’s the diversity that makes the shop special.

They carry jewelry, kitchenware, flags, clothing, seasonal decor, Willow Tree and Jim Shore figurines, gourmet foods and so much more.

Working with consignment vendors allows the store to carry unique handmade items unavailable in other shops or online. They also change inventory frequently, infusing a little excitement into each return visit. And like most successful small business owners, the Pinks are fiercely protective of their customers’ shopping experience.

“We always want our customers to feel comfortable shopping with us,” said Pink. “Our core values are to provide high quality, unique and handmade products at

reasonable prices. Special orders are often taken to meet a customer’s needs, and we can even order large amounts of items to help with showers, weddings and more.”

Bear Essentials also enjoys hiring locals to help new employees on their career path. “We have trained so many young adults over the years!” remarked Pink.

“They have all gone on to be successful people, and we are so proud of them.”

Competition with online shopping and big box stores remains a challenge for the gift shop. But shopping small has its upsides.

“When you shop with us you can see and touch the item,” said Pink. “You can get it gift-wrapped, which is always free. We can meet an immediate need. And you are always greeted with a ‘hello’ and a smile when you shop with us.”

Greek Food for a Good Mood

I

f you’re around the Pasadena area and craving Greek food, then Daphne’s California Greek is worth a try. With a variety of salads, sandwiches, and plates Daphne’s has plenty of options to choose from. They have several menu items that fall under 700 calories and can be customized. Daphne’s provides options for those who are on low-fat, low-carb, high protein, vegetarian, vegan and glutenfree diets. Since Daphne’s prides itself on providing fresh, high-quality and healthful food, I decided to try them out.

When first approaching the restaurant, I noticed the outside had a very urban feel. Steel tables with umbrellas and chairs surrounded the entrance as I made my way into the establishment. Once inside, the urban and modernized theme continued. Everything from the décor and furniture, to the flat-screened TV that was playing sports had an urban feel. After spending several minutes glaring at the menu, I placed my order and the young lady handed me a number for my table.

After waiting for some time, my food arrived.

I ordered two meals to sample and try out. The first, was the Mediterranean Veggie plate and the second was the Falafel Pita sandwich.

Visually, the Mediterranean Veggie

was plated nicely. It included spanakopita, falafel, hummus, fries and rice.

The Spanakopita, which is a Greek pastry, was delicious. The exterior layer of the pastry was light and flakey.

The inside was bursting with flavor from the chopped onions, spinach, and feta cheese all coming together.

Both the falafel and fries were warm, crunchy, and seasoned quite nicely. As for the hummus and rice, I felt it was average tasting and needed more seasonings to help elevate it. Regardless, the entire plate came together and had a nice Mediterranean kick.

When it came to the Falafel Pita sandwich, it was visually appealing and colorful. The sandwich had a warm toasted pita that was filled with falafel, avocado spread, cabbage, cucumber-tomato salad and tzatzik.

All of the vegetables were crisp and helped create an element of freshness to the meal. The falafel was flavorful and the tzatzik (cucumber, yogurt, and garlic dip) added more depth to the sandwich. The avocado spread was a nice additive because of its creamy and rich texture.

I felt the sandwich was a good choice and the Mediterranean Veggie plate was light and fresh tasting.

There were plenty of wholesome ingredients used in both meals, which kept it very healthy. Overall, I would check out Daphne’s if you’re looking for a solid go-to spot for Greek food.
