BY MALAK HABBAK The sun shined on Saturday as hundreds convened at Pasadena for a Women’s Rally and later at a Women’s March in downtown Los Angeles, one of nearly 50 in the state and 673 across the globe. “When they go low, we go local,” said Pasadena High School senior Gabriella Villegas to a crowd of over 500 women, men and children at the steps of the Pasadena City Hall Rotunda. Event organizers encouraged the public to join existing local organizations– quoting former President Barack Obama on their Facebook page– to “restore the sense of common purpose that we so badly need right now.” Rally participants clamored for civic engagement and celebrated human rights before boarding the Metro Gold Line to join a Women’s March in Los Angeles that drew 750 thousand, according to event organizers. They hoisted signs in support of freedom of speech, the right to choose, affordable healthcare, religious freedom, wage equality, environmental protection, gun control, disability services and quality education while standing by Planned Parenthood, Black Lives Matter, women, immigrants, Muslims and LGBTQ rights. “I think this presidency sort of was the straw that broke the camel’s back,” said Monrovia Resident Donna Baker, who met up with her sister Rose McCabe and friends Cathy McCallum, Isabel Cobos Houser and Mary Ann Lutz in Pasadena. Baker, who witnessed the second-wave feminist movement in her teenage years, had participated in anti-nuclear protests during the 1970s and 1980s and the Greenpeace campaign SEE PAGE 5

Thirty Options for Youth (OFY) Public Charter School students witnessed Donald Trump being sworn in as the nation’s 45th president. The OFY students traveled from all over Southern California, including Victorville, San Bernardino and Burbank to experience the historic event. OFY is a free non-profit public charter school that provides underserved and

at-risk students an alternative to traditional learning methods and environments. Many OFY students left their high schools because they found themselves unmotivated to attend or challenged to keep up with the pace, or were victims of bullying. For the past 30 years, OFY has helped tens of thousands of students find their passion in life and pursue their dreams.

“When I first found out I was chosen for the trip, I found myself conflicted. I was really excited yet intimidated by all the reports on the news. I didn’t know what to expect,” said Lucia Fernandez, a senior at the Irwindale center. “The day of the Inauguration, was crazy and full of positive energy. I was glad I attended as a neutral party because I was able to fully observe and respect oth-

ers freedom of speech and their beliefs.” Through experiential learning, OFY offers students opportunities to learn beyond the classroom with hands-on experiences that promote social and emotional growth. Many OFY students have never left their neighborhoods. With this program, they are able to gain unique cultural

A New Year - A New Smile

LASD Assist Azusa PD with Shooting Death Investigation

By: Kenneth Canzoneri DDS

I have been accused of being overzealous with regards to the Dr. Canzoneri importance of a smile! But consider this. When you smile, endorphins are released into your body and endorphins are responsible for making us feel happy - lowering stress levels and effective in pain management. The expression of a smile will not only brighten your day but will brighten the day of people toward you. A smile also makes you look younger. The muscles used for smiling lift the face which gives the appearance of a younger you! It is difficult to smile if one is embarrassed by their teeth. Teeth

that are stained, chipped, crooked and missing can lower one’s self-esteem. As a reconstructive dentist I am very excited about our profession’s ability to improve a smile. When a patient comes into our office their smile is evaluated with multiple techniques including digital imaging, video, and 3D printed models placed on a jaw simulator. A few options for rejuvenating a smile are veneers, crowns, in-office laser whitening, orthodontics, and laser gum reshaping to name a few procedures. Writer Megan Bailey states “A smile can cut through all barriers. It knows no age, gender, color or culture. No matter where you are in the world, what language you speak or social status, a smile will always be understood.” The question to ask yourself is - what do you want your smile to say?

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau detectives are continuing to assist Azusa Police Department personnel investigate the circumstances surrounding a shooting death that occurred in the 600 block of Dalton Avenue in Azusa on Jan. 22 at 1:21 a.m. Detectives have learned that officers responded to a call of gunshots in the area of Dalton Avenue and Sixth Street in Azusa. When they arrived, they found that a Lexus sedan crashed into

a parked pick-up truck in an alley just north of Sixth Street. Inside the car they found two victims. The driver, a 21-year-old male Hispanic, was pronounced dead at the scene from a gunshot wound to the head. The front passenger, a 20-year-old Hispanic male, was transported to a local hospital, treated for a gunshot wound and subsequently released. Preliminary information has revealed that the victims were driving in

the area of Dalton Avenue and Sixth Street when the suspect shot into their car, striking both the victims. There is no suspect information or description at this time. The victim driver is a known street gang member, but it is unknown at this time if the murder is gang related. The investigation is ongoing and there is no additional information available at this time.

Rep. Schiff Introduces Bipartisan Legislation to Protect Children From Predators by Requiring Criminal Background Checks

Every year, thousands of youth recreation programs are a vulnerable target for child predators who hope to gain access to their next victims under the guise of seeking employment or volunteer opportunities. In as many as 34 states, childserving organizations do not have reliable access to both state and national FBI fingerprint-based background checks – the gold standard for criminal background checks – because access to the FBI system is often limited, unreasonably timeconsuming, or prohibitively expensive. The bipartisan Child Protection Improvements Act (CPIA), introduced by Rep. Schiff (D-CA) and Rep. Bishop (R-MI), will make FBI fingerprint-based background checks permanently and widely available to youth-serving organizations nationwide. They introduced the legislation with 26 bipartisan co-sponsors. “When parents send their children to after-school programs, sports camps, or to be with mentors, they must be able to trust that their children are in safe hands,” Rep. Schiff said. “Every organization that serves our youth should have access to the FBI fingerprint-based background check system so they can thoroughly screen anyone who will be working with kids. The results of a multiyear pilot program strongly indicate that this system will be effective in catching child predators who try to avoid detection by moving across

state lines.” “Congress has a duty to ensure every youth-serving organization in America can afford and access the very best background checks on staff and volunteers, and doing so means utilizing the FBI’s gold-standard database,” said Rep. Bishop. “We cannot allow a single bad actor to slip through the cracks when it comes to our children’s safety. Protecting kids was a top priority of mine in the Michigan Senate, and I am proud to continue working with Congressman Schiff on this important effort.” Currently, many childserving organizations have the ability to request state background checks on prospective employees and volunteers that will work with children. However, a state background check alone is no match for the FBI’s finger-print based system – the only one capable of performing a nation-wide search and preventing child predators from avoiding detection by moving from state to state. CPIA builds on the success of the PROTECT Act’s Child Safety Pilot which ran from 2003 until 2011. The pilot provided access to FBI fingerprint background checks for a variety of childserving non-profits. The pilot conducted over 105,000 background checks and 6.2 percent of potential volunteers were found to have criminal records of concern – over 6,500 individuals. In addition, over 40 percent of individuals with criminal records of concern had crimes in states other than where

they were applying to volunteer – meaning that only a nationwide check would have flagged these individuals’ criminal records. The criminal offenses among some of these applicants included convictions for criminal sexual conduct with a child, child endangerment, and manslaughter. To build on the success of the Child Safety Pilot and make these essential background checks permanently and widely available to youth-serving organizations, legislators have introduced the CPIA, which would ensure that organizations that serve children, the disabled, and the elderly all across the country have access to FBI fingerprint searches in a timely and affordable manner. It would also protect privacy rights by ensuring that the specifics of a criminal record are never disclosed without explicit consent by the volunteer or employee and providing an opportunity for individuals to correct errors in their records. The CPIA does not authorize any new spending and will be supported by the fees assessed for background checks by the requesting nonprofit organizations. The program does not require organizations to utilize FBI fingerprint background checks, and only makes them available to those wishing to utilize them. An earlier version of this legislation passed the House in 2010 on a 413-4 vote.

Galperin Cites Need to Assess How City is Meeting the Needs of Cleanliness and Safety of Our Vulnerable Population

Coinciding with this week’s 2017 L.A. Homeless Count, Controller Ron Galperin is launching a review of City homeless tent and encampment policies – along with an assessment of related outreach, cleanup and assistance efforts. “As the City prepares to embark on its annual Homeless Count, we must evaluate if we are doing everything we can to be responsive to the plight of our homeless as well as balancing the need for L.A.’s public spaces to be safe, sanitary, and accessible for all,” said Galperin. “The status quo is an injustice and a disservice to the health, safety and quality of life of our homeless – and of all Angelenos.” Last year, the City amended its Municipal Code Section (LAMC 56.11), which regulates how personal property is

disposed, left or stored in public areas. In April of 2016, the City’s Bureau of Sanitation adopted 41 pages of “Standard Operating Protocols” to carry out the Municipal Code changes on public property such as sidewalks and parks. These protocols also call, among other things, for outreach to homeless individuals to be conducted by the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA) and other social service providers. The Controller’s review will focus on how well these Operating Protocols are currently working – and it will seek to measure the success of these protocols by evaluating best practices, the respective roles of various City departments, adherence to the stated goals and objectives of the program, the sufficiency of

resources available, and if the program is meeting the City’s guiding principles for its overall homeless strategy. “Regrettably, since adoption of the revised strategies, codes and protocols, the proliferation of personal property and encampments have gotten worse -- not better,” said Galperin. “The intent of adopting a more sensible and streamlined 56.11 was to see enhanced cleanliness, public safety and to better meet the needs of the homeless through appropriate outreach efforts. I haven’t seen any of these actually occur.” The 2016 Los Angeles Homeless Count indicated that home¬less¬ness rose 11 percent in the City and 5.7 percent in the County of Los Angeles. Mandated by the U.S. Dept. of Housing

and Urban Development and coordinated locally by LAHSA, the Greater Los Angeles Homeless Count is the largest homeless census count in the nation. Over the course of three days and nights, thousands of trained volunteers organize across L.A. to determine the number of homeless individuals and families living in the region. This year’s annual Homeless Count in Los Angeles begins on January 24, 2017. Controller Galperin this month also released an audit of LA’s affordable housing and Density Bonus Program. The Controller highlighted the need for additional affordable housing and advocated for additional incentives to encourage private development to provide more affordable units in their mixed-use housing projects.

“We Build, We Fight” has been the motto of the U. S. Navy’s Construction Force, known as the “Seabees”, for the past 75 years. Baldwin Park, California native and Sierra Vista High School graduate, Constructionman Fernando Gonzalez, builds and fights around the world as a member of a naval construction battalion center located in Port Hueneme, California. Gonzalez works as a builder in the Navy. “As a builder in the Navy, I’m trained to complete all parts of basic construction including excavation, flooring, walls and roofing,” said Gonzalez. The jobs of some of the Seabees today have remained unchanged since World War II, when the Seabees paved the 10,000-mile road to victory for the allies in the Pacific and in Europe, according to Lara Godbille, director of the U. S. Navy Seabee Museum. “I look forward to deploying to other countries providing humanitarian assistance for those in need,” said Gonzalez. “I’ve been told that we’re Navy ambassadors for others around the world.” For the past 75 years Seabees have served in all

American conflicts. They have also supported humanitarian efforts using their construction skills to help communities around the world following earthquakes, hurricanes and other natural disasters. “I am proud of the hard work that Seabees do every day,” said Rear Adm. Bret Muilenburg, commander, Naval Facilities Engineering Command. “Their support to the Navy and Marine Corps mission is immeasurable, and we look forward to the next seven decades of

service.” Seabees around the world will take part in a yearlong celebration in 2017 to commemorate the group’s 75-year anniversary. The theme of the celebration is “Built on History, Constructing the Future.” “Seabees deploy around the world providing expert expeditionary construction support on land and under the sea, for the Navy and Marine Corps, in war, humanitarian crisis and peace,” said Capt. Mike Saum, commodore, Naval

Construction Group (NCG) 1. “Seabee resiliency, skill, and resolution under hostile and rough conditions prove our motto ‘We Build, We Fight.’ The Seabee patch we wear on our uniform signifies to the warfighter and civilian alike that they’re in good hands.” Serving in the U.S. Navy has allowed Gonzalez to continue learning about himself and the legacy he wants to leave to future Seabees. “It’s a great honor to be part of the history of the Seabees,” said Gonzalez.

Preparations Underway For The 73Rd Temple City Camellia Festival By Shel segal

A three-day jubilee complete with a milelong parade down Las Tunas Drive and a carnival filled with rides, food and music, the 73rd Temple City Camellia Festival is returning to Temple City Park from Friday, Feb. 24 at 4 p.m. through Sunday, Feb. 26. The parade will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 25 and make its way down Las Tunas Drive from Sultana Avenue to Temple City Park, at the corner of Las Tunas Drive and Golden West Avenue. This year’s theme will be “Chase Your Dreams,” and the grand marshal is Erik Rosales, an Emmy Award-winning journalist and 1988 graduate of Temple City High School. The honorary grand marshals are the 8- to 10-year-old champion Temple City National Little League All-Star team. Dawn Tarin, director for the festival, said other than Christmas, this is the one event Temple City kids don't want to miss. “The kids in town really look forward to this,” she said. “It’s a time when parents can bring them and turn them loose in the crowd. Once you’re over a certain age it’s kind of a right of passage to run around the carnival, knowing your parents are close by, but not that close by. And the little kids love it. They just have to have their parents with them.” She added if you haven’t been to the festival in some time several additions and improvements have been made, especially to make it more fun for those who might not be children anymore. “Three years ago, we expanded out into the street,” Tarin said. “There is a street closure. We now have a beer and wine garden. We wanted to have more activities and an

area where adults could hang out.” One of the more adult-like activities will be playing bingo on the Friday night of the event, Tarin said. Another well-attended event on the Saturday night will be the Temple City High School All-Class Reunion, she added. And on the Sunday night from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. will be an Oscar viewing party in the beer garden, where festival goers can watch the entire Oscar broadcast, act out a red carpet event and play games, said past festival director Nanette Fish. “The Camellia Festival always falls on Oscar weekend,” said Fish, who is helping

to organize the Oscar viewing party. “We thought we’d take advantage of that. We have three large TVs inside the beer garden. We’ll have a red carpet event. It’ll be a lot of fun.” Tarin added several organizations in town depend on the Camellia Festival for part of their livelihood. “It’s a huge fundraiser for a lot of our nonprofit youth organizations in Temple City,” she said. “We have everything from soccer to baseball to Jobs Daughters. They all run food booths. We have groups who run game booths.” The Camellia Festival also boasts a Roy-

al Court, which is comprised of 10 first graders from Temple City. Members of the court serve for a year and attend several community events in addition to participating in the parade, Tarin said. “They are the community and city ambassadors for the year,” she said. One of the Royal Court members is Jaslyn Young, who is 7 years old and attends La Rosa Elementary School. She is really looking forward to the festival and the parade. “It’s so exciting because I get to be on the float,” she said. Conner Phan, 6, and a student at Longden Elementary, said he is looking forward to the camaraderie the festival brings. “We can make friends and I get to be in the parade,” Conner said. “That’s pretty cool.” Georgia Pluger, a 6-year-old who attends St. Luke’s, said she has some real reasons why she likes the Camellia Festival. “The rides and the food,” she said. Festival chairperson Gina Aparicio said the number of children who tried out for the Royal Court increased greatly this year from 45 to 67. She added the festival organizers are making a stronger effort to attract more kids to the program. “We are going to the schools, directly speaking to the first-grade classes, letting them know the benefits and how much fun it would be to be on the Royal Court,” she said. She added the court has “changed in many ways” over the years. “We have more ethnicity,” she said. “And we have more children who want to be involved. That’s our goal. The Camellia Festival is all based on that.”

against the clubbing of baby seals off Canada’s Newfoundland and Labrador coastal regions. Yet Saturday’s event seemed one of her biggest priorities. “We’re all humans when you cut right to the chase,” she said. Irma Cooper, a speaker at the Women’s March and president of LA’s Chapter of The National Association of Black Military Women, said the country has been seeing progress, “but it is slow.” Cooper, who served in the United States military for 30 years as a registered nurse, recalls the days women were not allowed to command hospital units. “That was a great achievement when women were starting to command,” said Cooper, whose first command in California was the largest in the state with over 5,000 soldiers. “We are not against [President Donald Trump] but we want to make clear [we] have a voice and our voice will be stronger as we unite.” Jan Sanders, Pasadena resident and chair of the Women’s Rally in Pasadena, said the rally was in part created to ameliorate feelings of discouragement due to Hillary Clinton’s loss of the election, “not necessarily Trump’s winning of the election.” Yet much sentiment at the rally and march was directed towards the president, sworn into office the prior day. To those who were angry, scared and unsettled, state Senate President pro Tempore Kevin de León (D-Los Angeles) addressed the crowd’s concerns at the rotunda. “One election and one man will not change the values of the great state of California,” de León consoled the crowd. The state “will be there for each and every one of you.” The 2016 presidential election was a “tragedy” for McCallum, a 66-year-old Monrovia resident. On election night, her 25-year-old daughter Julia Fouser sent her a chilling text, “I’m going to lose my healthcare.”

Fouser was one of the many reasons McCallum decided to attend the Pasadena rally and LA march. For one, Fouser has a pre-existing condition. And two, Fouser is a lesbian. On Friday McCallum packed a bag with a jacket, water bottle, snacks and prescription medication she needed on a daily basis; her husband loaded her TAP card so she would be ready to board the Metro train the next day. McCallum was blown away by the multitudes of individuals and families lining up at the stations’ platforms and taken aback by the “pure love and kindness” people seemed to show for each other. Despite prolonged Disneyland-like lines, people clapped and cheered as trains that came and left the terminals carried passengers with pussyhats and boisterous posters. “I’ve never seen people in a group size that big being so nice to each other,” said McCallum, who had not attended a protest since the Vietnam War. McCallum waved back briskly to gleeful children whose faces were glued to the windows aboard the trains. “It’s never been this

packed ever,” said Nalani Coleman agreed. Among those waiting to board the train was Alta Dena resident Lauren Marks, who came to march with her parents and son, carrying a poster that read, “My baby’s grandma can’t believe she still has to protest this [expletive].” North Hollywood resident Ellie Reed decided to take an Uber to LA to escape the long wait at the Metro stations. Upon arriving to City Hall, she told her friends, “This is the happiest I’ve felt since November 7.” “It’s so incredible,” Congresswoman Judy Chu (DPasadena) told crowds in LA, “and to think about what’s happening all across this country, over 600 marches, over 2.2 million women fighting for their rights.” “This cannot be the only time we come together,” said Sue Dunlap, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Los Angeles. “This is the beginning of standing up for all our communities.” Near the end of the march, people hung their posters on a wall near Grand Park in a symbol of unity. “We will not let darkness prevail,” said Hannah-Beth Jackson (D-Santa Barbara). “It is morning in Los Angeles.”

As the momentous occasion that we had traveled and prepared for was in sight, we buzzed with anticipation,” Mya Reyes-Rio, a sophomore at the San Gabriel center said. “Despite some feelings of worry about our future world … I was amazed by the way my new friends displayed strength in resisting factors that might have told us to lose hope. As the event started, we generally stood silent, engrossed in what we were witnessing. We were all grateful for the experience and bonding this journey afforded us and will forever be changed.”

Jerry Brown Declares: ‘California is Not Turning Back – Not Now, Not Ever’

Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. delivered his State of the State address Tuesday, departing with the traditional practice of listing every issue and restating every priority to focus on the “broader context of our country and its challenges.” In his remarks the Governor vowed to “defend everybody – every

“T

man, woman and child – who has come here … and has contributed to the well-being of our state,” and committed to protecting the state’s gains on immigration, health care and climate change, guided by the principles that make California “the Great Exception” – truth, civility and perseverance. hank you. Thank you for all that energy and enthusiasm. It is just what we need for the battle ahead. So keep it up and don’t ever falter. This is California, the sixth most powerful economy in the world. One out of every eight Americans lives right here and 27 percent – almost eleven million – were born in a foreign land. When California does well, America does well. And when California hurts, America hurts. As the English poet, John Donne, said almost 400 years ago: “No man is an island entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main … And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.” A few moments ago, I swore into office our new attorney general. Like so many others, he is the son of immigrants who saw California as a place where, through grit and determination, they could realize their dreams. And they are not alone, millions of Californians have come here from Mexico and a hundred other countries, making our state what it is today: vibrant, even turbulent, and a beacon of hope to the rest of the world. We don’t have a Statue of Liberty with its inscription: “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free …” But we do have the Golden Gate and a spirit of adventure and openness that has welcomed – since the Gold Rush of 1848 – one wave of immigration after another. For myself, I feel privileged to stand before you as your governor, as did my father almost sixty years ago. His mother, Ida, the youngest of eight children, was born in very modest circumstances, not very far from where we are gathered today. Her father arrived in California in 1852, having left from the Port of Hamburg, aboard a ship named “Perseverance.” It is that spirit of perseverance and courage which built our state from the beginning. And it is that spirit which will get us through the great uncertainty and the difficulties ahead. It is customary on an occasion like this to lay out a specific agenda for the year ahead. Six times before from this rostrum, I have done that, and in some detail. And, as I reread those proposals set forth in previous State of the State speeches, I was amazed to see how much we have accomplished together. We have: • Increased – by tens of billions – support for our public schools and universities. • Provided health insurance to over five million more Californians. • Raised the minimum wage. • Reduced prison overcrowding and reformed our system of crime and punishment. • Made California a world leader in the fight against climate change. • Passed a water bond. • Built up a rainy day fund. • And closed a huge $27 billion deficit. And during the last seven years, California has reduced the unemployment rate from 12.1 percent to 5.2 percent and created almost 2.5 million jobs. And that’s not all. But this morning it is hard for me to keep my thoughts just on California. The recent election and inauguration of a new President have shown deep divisions across America.

Donne, the Governor made it clear that California is not an island and America’s future is inextricably tied to California’s future: “When California does well, America does well. And when California hurts, America hurts.” The following is a transcript of his speech:

While no one knows what the new leaders will actually do, there are signs that are disturbing. We have seen the bald assertion of “alternative facts.” We have heard the blatant attacks on science. Familiar signposts of our democracy –truth, civility, working together – have been obscured or swept aside. But on Saturday, in cities across the country, we also witnessed a vast and inspiring fervor that is stirring in the land. Democracy doesn’t come from the top; it starts and spreads in the hearts of the people. And in the hearts of Americans, our core principles are as strong as ever. So as we reflect on the state of our state, we should do so in the broader context of our country and its challenges. We must prepare for uncertain times and reaffirm the basic principles that have made California the Great Exception that it is. First, in California, immigrants are an integral part of who we are and what we’ve become. They have helped create the wealth and dynamism of this state from the very beginning. I recognize that under the Constitution, federal law is supreme and that Washington determines immigration policy. But as a state we can and have had a role to play. California has enacted several protective measures for the undocumented: the Trust Act, lawful driver’s licenses, basic employment rights and nondiscriminatory access to higher education. We may be called upon to defend those laws and defend them we will. And let me be clear: we will defend everybody – every man, woman and child – who has come here for a better life and has contributed to the well-being of our state. My second point relates to health care. More than any other state, California embraced the Affordable Care Act and over five million people now enjoy its benefits. But that coverage has come with tens of billions of federal dollars. Were any of that to be taken away, our state budget would be directly affected, possibly devastated. That is why I intend to join with other governors – and with you – to do everything we can to protect the health care of our people. Third, our state is known the world over for the actions we have taken to encourage renewable energy and combat climate change. Whatever they do in Washington, they can’t change the facts. And these are the facts: the climate is changing, the temperatures are rising and so are the oceans. Natural habitats everywhere are under increasing stress. The world knows this. One hundred and ninety-four countries signed the Paris Agreement to control greenhouse gases. Our own voluntary agreement to accomplish the same goal – the “Under Two M.O.U.” – has 165 signatories, representing a billion people. We cannot fall back and give in to the climate deniers. The science is clear. The danger is real. We can do much on our own and we can join with others – other states and provinces and even countries, to stop the dangerous rise in climate pollution. And we will. Fourth is infrastructure. This is a topic where the President has stated his firm intention to build and build big. In his inaugural address, he said: “We will build new roads, and highways, and bridges, and airports, and tunnels, and railways all across our wonderful nation.” And in this, we can all work together – here in Sacramento and in Washington as well. We have roads and tunnels and railroads and even a dam that the

President could help us with. And that will create goodpaying American jobs. As we face the hard journey ahead, we will have to summon, as Abraham Lincoln said, “the better angels of our nature.” Above all else, we have to live in the truth. We all have our opinions but for democracy to work, we have to trust each other. We have to strive to understand the facts and state them clearly as we argue our points of view. As Hugo Grotius, the famous Dutch jurist, said long ago, “even God cannot cause two times two not to make four.” When the science is clear or when our own eyes tell us that the seats in this chamber are filled or that the sun is shining, we must say so, not construct some alternate universe of non-facts that we find more pleasing. Along with truth, we must practice civility. Although we have disagreed – often along party lines – we have generally been civil to one another and avoided the rancor of Washington. I urge you to go even further and look for new ways to work beyond party and act as Californians first. Democrats are in the majority, but Republicans represent real Californians too. We went beyond party when we reformed workers’ compensation, when we created a rainy day fund and when we passed the water bond. Let’s do that again and set an example for the rest of the country. And, in the process, we will earn the trust of the people of California. And then there is perseverance. It is not an accident that the sailing ship that brought my great-grandfather to America was named “Perseverance.” That is exactly what it took to endure the dangerous and uncertain months at sea, sailing from Germany to America. While we now face different challenges, make no mistake: the future is uncertain and dangers abound. Whether it’s the threat to our budget, or to undocumented Californians, or to our efforts to combat climate change – or even more global threats such as a financial meltdown or a nuclear incident or terrorist attack – this is a time which calls out for courage and for perseverance. I promise you both. But let’s remember as well that after the perilous voyage, those who made it to America found boundless opportunity. And so will we. Let me end in the immortal words of Woody Guthrie: “This land is your land, this land is my land From California to the New York Island From the Redwood Forest, to the Gulf Stream waters This land was made for you and me... Nobody living can ever stop me, As I go walking that freedom highway; Nobody living can ever make me turn back This land was made for you and me.” California is not turning back. Not now, not ever.

Larry Carlton’s Arcadia Gig Extraordinary by terry miller Mr. 335 ( aka Larry Carlton)is arguably the foremost jazz/rock/blues guitar player working today. On Saturday night at the Arcadia PAC Carlton fans were in for a truly extraordinary treat which surpassed any expectations one may have had. Playing his signature Gibson ES 335, complete with “Mr. 335” embossed on the head stock, Carlton seemed to be one with his instrument for an incredibly powerful and energetic set. Quiet spoken Carlton performed two exquisite solo works before bringing on the rest of his band: keys, bass and drums. An outstanding line up of some of the tightest musicians anywhere in the world, right here in Arcadia Saturday. What a delight. If I said Carlton and his band were ‘flawless’ on Saturday that would be a severe gross understatement. They were astounding together as a unit and individually remarkably talent-

ed and confident musicians. Carlton didn’t disappoint this huge fan…especially when he played Josie from Steely Dan’s Aja album. He joked that he hated playing that particular song…he was kidding . However on a recent tour of Europe, Carlton woke up to a review of the previous night’s show that said exactly that. Carlton was kidding. From remarkably powerful blues to Sleepwalk, Minute by Minute, and many other Carlton classics, Larry Carton had the audience transfixed. The inevitable encore consisted of two more brilliant tunes Carlton carefully chose. From an early age, Carlton has delighted listeners with his seamless, melodic and impeccable style that is instantly recognizable as Carlton’s. Fat Cat Gets Into ‘Oval Office’

Pasadena Humane Society inaugurates diet and exercise plan for chubby stray tabby With all eyes turned to the nation’s capital, the Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA is set to inaugurate the “Corpulent Cat Room,” a living space for larger than life felines in the shelter’s Neely Cat Center. The first cat to assume the office is 30-pound William Meoward Taft, a stray, gray tabby named after America’s portly 27th President. Seven-year-old Taft was found strolling the streets of Pasadena over the weekend. When he was brought to the shelter, it was soon discovered he was too big to fit into a conventional shelter cage. Staff jumped to action to find more stately accommodations for this tubby tabby, eventually setting him up in a staff office with his own bed, food, water, and access to a presidential, en suite litterbox. The medical team at the Pasadena Humane Society has put Taft on a prescription diet to begin trimming him down. He has been prescribed a regular exercise routine as well, to help him slowly and safely lose extra pounds. A healthy weight for

a domestic cat is between 8-10lbs, however, it is estimated that over 50% of American dogs and cats are overweight or obese. Obese cats are more likely to suffer from diabetes, heart disease, liver failure, arthritis and a host of other medical issues. “We were shocked at the size of this kitty,” says Julie Bank, President/CEO of the Pasadena Humane Society. “It’s important to remember that pet obesity is a real problem. Like humans, pets need to be fed a balanced diet and receive daily exercise to thrive.” If you suspect your pet might be packing a few extra pounds, it’s best to work

closely with a veterinarian to get them back on the right track. Sudden changes in diet and activity level can be dangerous, a slow and professionally-monitored approach is always recommended. As for tubby Taft, he’s now looking for new family who will help him achieve his campaign goals for 2017. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on this property. NOTICE OF TRUSTEE’S SALE Note: Because the Beneficiary reserves the right to bid less than the total debt owed, it is possible that at the time of the sale the opening bid may be less than the total debt NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code.
