The all-volunteer Assistance League of Arcadia has been serving the city since 1954. Funding for our numerous charitable programs is provided through our thrift shop, The Bargain Box, through sales, donations and grants. The Bargain Box helps impact the lives of over 12,000 children throughout the San Gabriel Valley annually and funds our major charitable program called Operation School Bell (OSB) among others. OSB provides underprivileged children with new school uniforms, school supplies, shoes, clothing, hygiene kits and books. Monrovia’s embrace of the past is perhaps best illustrated by our award-winning downtown. Considered by the community to be the heart of the city, Old Town Monrovia offers residents and visitors alike a unique experience that you will be hard-pressed to find anywhere else in Southern California. With its historic buildings, exciting dining options, and unique blend of boutique shops that offer everything from vinyl records to handmade wooden toys, Old Town offers a spectacular environment that blends small-town charm with big-city amenities. While Old Town may be the most visible tie to our community’s rich history, Monrovia’s California heritage can also be seen in our tree-lined streets and vintage neighborhoods. As the fourth oldest incorporated city in Los Angeles County, the historic landmarked homes that dot our neighborhoods offer a window into the best elements of the past, where an idyllic sense of community is further supported through a myriad of city events such as trick-or- treating in Old Town, Santa Tours during Christmas, Fourth of July fireworks, and an annual old-fashioned community birthday party called Monrovia Days. Monrovia even offers residents and visitors the opportunity to escape the hustle of metropolitan and suburban life in our Hillside Wilderness Preserve. The city owns over 1,400 acres of hillside property where individuals can retreat into the San Gabriel Mountains to explore hiking trails, beautiful waterfalls, and truly breathtaking views of Monrovia and the San Gabriel Valley. The city also coordinates a variety of activities and programs in the Hillside Wilderness Preserve at Canyon Park, including Family Night Hikes, Butterfly Counts, camping excursions, and the famed Fountain to the Falls Race. Our embrace of the past has certainly given rise to a tremendous sense of community in Monrovia. But just as important to the establishing community is how the city is building on that past to forge a truly vibrant future. Because Monrovia is not just about Old Town and historic homes and our wilderness preserve. Coupled with those community elements is a growing economy where innovative high-tech companies are forging new solutions to the world’s problems. Among the high-tech and bio-tech firms that call Monrovia home are the City of Hope’s Beckman Research Institute, ChromoLogic, Xencor, AeroVironment, and Oak Crest Institute of Science. Given our strategic location – only 10 miles away from Pasadena, 14 miles away from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and 20 miles from downtown Los Angeles – and lower cost of doing business, Monrovia is considered as an ideal location for new high-tech and bio-tech firms looking to establish their operations. And to further support those efforts, the city has partnered with a non-profit firm called Lab Launch Monrovia to create one of only two bio-tech/high-tech incubator companies in the San Gabriel Valley. And what more, it’s not only high-tech and bio-tech firms that are attracted to Monrovia. Corporate entities have established their offices in Monrovia. From Trader Joe’s to Southern California News Group to Naked Juice to Samuelson Fetter to Tommy’s Burgers … renowned companies have identified Monrovia as the place to be. As we continue to move forward as a community, the city has also embraced transit-oriented development concepts by establishing a premier Gold Line transit village that we call Monrovia Station Square. The city spent $25 million to install vital infrastructure, create a tremendous public plaza, and develop a concert amphitheater at Station Square. All of that public investment has paid off as private sector development is now transforming the transit village into a spectacularly active location. A 261-unit Class-A apartment complex known as MODA at Monrovia Station is currently under construction, while development continues on the establishment of a chic artisan-style cafeteria food hall project called The Lumberyard. The city is also working on developing a restaurant/café concept at the Historic Santa Fe Depot located right in the middle of Station Square, and numerous conversations are ongoing with other development interests who are working to be part of the future of Monrovia’s transit village. Monrovia’s way of doing things is certainly not typical - and that atypical approach has developed a truly unique community ... where we come together to support one another, where we celebrate together, where we tackle tough issues together. Vroman’s Gives Back is a charitable program that donates a portion of customers’ purchases to local nonprofits, including public radio stations, arts centers, family services, and programs supporting literacy, the homeless, and animal welfare. Westridge School, a 4-12 girls school in Pasadena, has developed a summer program tailor-made to spark creative, design-based thinking in girls. In Creative Coding, girls in grades 3 through 6 learn the fundamentals of programming and engage in hands-on art classes every day. Sections are offered for students with little or no prior coding experience as well as for girls comfortable with the basic concepts of coding. For middle school students entering grades 7 and 8, Westridge offers Coding and Digital Storytelling I and II. In the first class, girls discover the art of storytelling using coding and digital art to create interactive stories. In the second class, recommended for those with basic coding skills, participants produce digital art, including GOLD - Private Gilrl’s High School 3D creations, to complement playable video games and animations designed in Scratch. “These programs are taught by the incredible faculty of Westridge and take advantage of the school’s STEAMWork Design Studio, a makerspace outfitted with 3D printers, 3D scanners, and an array of tools meant to help girls roll up their sleeves and tinker and build,” said Elizabeth J. McGregor, head of Westridge School. “They are especially designed for girls and let them take the lead in a field in which boys in the room often dominate the conversation. It is delightful to see the fun and growth that happens in the relaxed and free environment of the summer.”
