Just in time for Veterans Day next month, those bean counters at the Pentagon had a special ‘ thank you for your service’ for those who signed up for National Guard to fight for their country in Afghanistan and Iraq. These men and women were offered financial incentives to enlist and now the Pentagon wants it back…they claim it was a mistake. The absurdity of it is stunning, even by government standards. Local congress members are spearheading a united front against the Pentagon and hoping for victory against this demand when Congress returns in November. However, after a plethora of publicity, the Pantagon has been orderd to stop seeking those repayments of enlistment bonuses. Secretary of Defense Ash Carter said Wednesday he is suspending “all efforts to collect reimbursement” from improperly awarded enlistment bonuses given to some member of the CaliSEE PAGE 2
Community Altar Installation to the Influential Rocky Behr
Rochalinne (Rocky) Elman Behr, beloved founder and owner of The Folk Tree gallery and store, will be remembered with a Community Altar dedication at the Old Pasadena Day of the Dead Family Fiesta on Sunday, Oct. 30. Her longtime friend and Folk Tree manager/curator Victor Solis will create the altar, to be on display from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Metro Right of Way Alley (“Big Bang Theory Way”) at Holly Street (120 E Holly Street). The Community Altar installation is part of Old
Pasadena Day of the Dead weekend, which features two dozen altar displays throughout district businesses, as well as Sunday’s Family Fiesta. Behr, who died in April, inspired keen interest in the folk arts of Mexico and South America throughout Pasadena and Los Angeles. During a tour of southern Mexico in the late 1970s, Behr was captivated with the area’s folk art, people, architecture, and terrain. Her trip began a life-long passion and an expertise that eventually proved to be singular in the
Los Angeles area. She opened The Folk Tree in 1986, and over the next three decades, she cultivated close relationships with artists in towns and villages throughout Mexico and South America, always looking for high-quality craftsmanship and continuously mentoring artisans with advice and support. Many of the artisans that Mexico has declared “Grand Masters” were the very artisans whose work Behr had been supporting and purSEE PAGE 3
