Carjacking Suspect Arrested on the Campus of Cal Tech On Tuesday, October 25, 2016, at about 9:04 p.m., a man reported his 2015 Audi A8 was taken from him at gunpoint by the suspect at Lucky Boy located at 640 S. Arroyo Parkway. At about 9:27 pm, Officers located the Audi on Holliston Avenue within the Cal Tech campus. The suspect fled a short distance and crashed into a parked car and fled on foot.

A perimeter containment was established and during a search of the campus, the suspect was located at about 11:52 pm. A police K9 was deployed and the suspect sustained a dog bite to his left leg. He was transported to a local hos-

pital in stable condition.

Cal Tech Campus Security immediately initiated a campus lock down to ensure public safety. The Pasadena Police helicopter, Pasadena Police Officers along with officers from Glendale Police Department, Alhambra Police Department, South Pasadena Police Department, El Monte Police Department, and the Altadena Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, responded to assist with the perimeter containment and search of the campus. No students, citizens, or police personnel were injured during the incident.

The suspect was iden-

tified as Khalil Abdulrahim, a 21 year-old Black male, homeless. The suspect’s weapon, a revolver, was recovered at the scene. A field show-up was conducted at the hospital where the suspect was positively identified by the victim, a 34 year-old White male, Sierra Madre resident. After medical treatment, the suspect will be booked for carjacking, a violation of California Penal Code Section 215.

The immediate response of the Pasadena Police helicopter assisted in the rapid containment of the suspect which contributed in bringing this dangerous encounter to a safe outcome for all involved.

Watermaster Looking to Implement Groundwater Recharge Assessment Fee This past week, staff engaged in additional discussions with the Main San Gabriel Basin Watermaster (Watermaster) regarding their plans for implementing a new assessment that would be used towards purchasing imported water to recharge our local aquafer.

All of the water experts

that staff have spoken to have identified that groundwater levels in the Main San Gabriel Basin (Basin) are at such a critically low level that no matter how much rain we receive, we will not be able to restore the Basin to a safe level without purchasing imported water. That imported water would then be placed

into spreading grounds located throughout the Basin’s service area (including for Monrovia) to recharge and increase our overall groundwater levels.

As the Watermaster has assessed this issue, they have indicated that in order to purchase the imported water that is needed, it will

be necessary for their agency to consider implementing a special assessment that will be charged to every water producer in the Basin. As we have discussed this issue with the Watermaster, they are still assessing details related to the assessment, with that analysis set to be completed in mid-2017.

There are multiple moving parts related to this matter, and staff has additional meetings scheduled with the Watermaster in the next few weeks to further address this issue. In the meantime, please feel free to let me know if you have any questions regarding this matter.

Metro Increasing Expo Line Service To keep pace with growing ridership, Expo Rail Line trains are running every six minutes for most of the day, the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) recently announced. Trains currently run every 12 minutes and the service changes are expected to help reduce crowding and wait times for riders.

"Since Metro opened the Expo Line last May the demand for service from the public has been incredible," said Metro Board Chair John Fasana. "Now Metro is increasing the number of train cars used on the line to accommodate the many riders who have chosen to take transit instead of driving on the congested Westside.”

Metro has been running nine trains with three cars since the Expo Line opened last May, but now, service will shift to 18 trains with

two cars every six minutes, a 33 percent increase in rail capacity service. As the new Kinkisharyo light rail vehicles are deployed, trains will be lengthened to three cars from two.

“For our Expo riders who have experienced our packed trains, this will be a welcomed change,” said Metro CEO Phillip A. Washington. “This will be a great relief for thousands of Metro commuters and hopefully encourage new riders.”

Monday through Friday, Expo Line trains will run every six minutes until 8 p.m. when service frequency will be reduce to every 20 minutes until close of service. On weekends, Expo Line trains will run every 12 minutes, then every 20 minutes after 9 p.m. Trains may run more frequently when there are big events such as football games at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, which is adja-

cent to the Expo Line.

Metro is also adding train cars to the Gold Line as the agency receives new cars from Kinkisharyo. The Expo Line is 15 miles long with

19 stations between downtown L.A. and Santa Monica.

In downtown L.A. the Expo Line offers easy transfers to the Blue Line, Purple Line and Red Line at the 7th/Met-

ro Center Station. The Gold Line is the longest rail line in the Metro system with 31 miles and 27 stations between East Los Angeles and Azusa.

GROUND BREAKING FORECLOSURE RULING!

The California Supreme Court ruled on February 18, 2016 that a homeowner has the right to challenge his lender's authority to foreclose based upon void assignments of the loan to third parties. POLICE BLOTTERS PASADENA Oct. 17 At about 12:17 p.m., Pasadena Police officers responded to the Colorado Street Bridge regarding a suicidal subject. On arrival, officers saw the subject standing on the other side of the bridge safety railing. Officers talked with the male adult for several hours requesting that he climb back over the safety railing. The negation continued and at about 5 p.m., the subject complied with the officer’s request to surrender.

He was then transported to a local hospital for mental health evaluation.

At about 8:19 p.m., Pasadena Police Officer A. Torres was on routine patrol in the 1500 block of Villa Street when he received an alert regarding an “Armed and Dangerous vehicle.” The felony alert was generated by the Las Vegas Metro Police Department. Officer Torres began searching the area and subsequently found the vehicle near Washington Boulevard and Los Robles Avenue.

A high-risk vehicle stop was initiated and the suspect driver (female black adult) yielded. The two suspects complied with the officer’s orders to surrender and were arrested without incident.

The follow-up investigation determined that the passenger (Noah Fields, male black, 22 years, Pasadena resident) was involved in the Las Vegas robbery. The female was later released.

Oct. 19

At about 6:58 p.m., Pasadena Police officers responded to the 1400 block of Iowa Ave. regarding calls of shots fired. On arrival, officers did not locate any victims; however, they found evidence of

the shooting. The suspect vehicle was described as a Sliver Toyota.

Oct. 20

At about 10:07 p.m., Pasadena Police officers investigated a traffic collision in the 600 block of North Lake Ave. Officers learned that the driver of a vehicle was traveling south on Lake Avenue when he lost control of his car and impacted a city light pole and the exterior wall of a restaurant. Fortunately, there were no significant injuries associated with this incident.

SIERRA MADRE Oct. 20

Sierra Madre Police responded to the station lobby at about 2:50 p.m. regarding an injury traffic collision at Sierra Madre Boulevard and Michillinda Avenue. Both drivers exchanged information at the scene. The victim filed a police report after the driver did not return calls after attempts to contact him.

Case forwarded to Detectives.

Oct. 21

At about noon officers responded to the 100 block of Esperanza Ave. regarding a vehicle burglary report.

The subject(s) smashed the driver’s door window of the victim’s vehicle with an unknown object. The suspect(s) opened the driver’s door and removed the victim’s property from the center console then fled in an unknown direction.

At 3:30 p.m. SMPD responded to the report of a traffic collision at the corner of Orange Grove Ave and Michillinda Avenue The vehicle traveling southbound on Michillinda Avenue appar-

ently turned left and headed east on Orange Grove Avenue causing the vehicle headed north to collide with his vehicle.

MONROVIA

Oct. 21 At 6:15 a.m., officers responded to the report of a broken glass entry door at a business in the 200 block of E. Foothill. Officers cleared the business and discovered the cash register had been pried open. Approximately $100 was taken. The investigation is continuing.

A power outage was reported in the area of Foothill and Fifth. A transformer exploded at Foothill and Second causing the intersection lights to go out and the emergency flashing system began. The police department received several calls and complaints. The lights were restored at approximately 4 p.m.

At 8:18 p.m., an officer on patrol in the 700 block of E. Huntington Dr. observed a bicyclist commit a vehicle code violation and attempted to make a traffic stop. The suspect got off the bike and fled on foot. The suspect was detained a short distance away and taken into custody for resisting arrest. The suspect was later released with a citation to appear in court.

At 8:34 p.m., a business in the 500 block of W. Huntington called police to report a male subject was being detained inside the office for shoplifting. The merchandise was recovered and the officers arrested the subject.

At 9:33 p.m., officers were dispatched to a call of a missing person in the 1600 block of S. Myrtle. The caller reported a critical missing

person from a licensed facility. The subject’s cell phone plotted to the listed area and officers responded and located the subject. The subject was detained and later picked up by an outside agency.

At 9:54 p.m., a resident in the 1400 block of S. Magnolia called to report a subject who appeared to be asleep on the sidewalk. Officers arrived, contacted the subject and determined he was too intoxicated to care for himself.

The subject was arrested and taken into custody.

At 11:53 p.m., officers responded to the report of a male and female passed out on a sidewalk in the 100 block of Highland. Officers arrived to the location and determined the subjects were intoxicated. The subjects were arrested and taken into custody to the Monrovia Police Department.

Oct. 22

At 8:25 a.m., a vehicle was reported stolen in the 600 block of E. Walnut. The owner of the vehicle reported his 2016 Honda Accord was stolen from the street near his home. There was no evidence located at the scene.

The vehicle was found at approximately 2:30 p.m. by San Bernardino Sheriffs in Victorville.

At 12:14 a.m., an officer was on patrol in the area of California and Shrode when he noticed a vehicle swerving on the roadway. The officer made a traffic stop and the investigation revealed the driver was too intoxicated to drive a motor vehicle. The suspect was arrested.

At 1:39 a.m., an alarm company called to report an activation at a business in the 900 block of W. Duarte Road Officers arrived and found a

window had been shattered.

After further investigation it was determined two male suspects smashed a window to gain entry and stole miscellaneous items from the location. The suspects fled prior to the officers’ arrival.

The investigation is continuing.

At 4:11 a.m., an alarm company called to report an activation at a business in the 800 block of W. Huntington Dr. Officers arrived and found one of the entry/exit doors had been pried open.

It appears the suspect forced entry but met with another set of doors that was chained shut and did not allow further access into the building.

The investigation is continuing.

ARCADIA

Oct. 19 At about 7:51 p.m., officers responded to 24 Hour Fitness, 125 N. First Ave., regarding a vehicle burglary report. The officer discovered an unknown suspect entered the vehicle by unknown means and stole the victim’s clothes, wallet, and cash. No suspects were seen and no witnesses were located. The suspect then used the victim’s debit card in Arcadia and Monrovia. The investigation is ongoing.

Oct. 20

At approximately 7:27 p.m., officers responded to the 400 block of Fairview Ave. regarding a domestic dispute. An investigation revealed a physical altercation occurred between a boyfriend and girlfriend, resulting in the boyfriend pushing the victim causing her to fall to the floor. While she was on the floor, the boyfriend

Oct. 21

At about 10:04 a.m., an officer responded to Panda Nails, 147 E. Foothill Blvd., regarding a burglary report.

Sometime during the previous evening, an unknown suspect smashed the front window to the business. No suspects were seen and no witnesses were located.

Just before 1:49 p.m., an officer responded to a residence in the 100 block of W. Sandra Ave. regarding a burglary report. An investigation revealed unknown suspect(s) entered the house that was being fumigated through an unlocked bathroom window, ransacked the residence, and fled with a pressure washer and speaker system. No suspects were seen and no witnesses were located.

Around 11:47 p.m., an officer responded to the 1100 block of S. First Ave. regarding an activation of an Arcadia Police Department GPS tracker. Arcadia PD detectives deployed decoy bundles of sod containing tracking devices to combat a spree of sod thefts. The officer discovered a 59-year-old female from El Monte had the stolen sod and tracking device in her vehicle.

The suspect was arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking.

Oct. 22

Shortly after 4:52 a.m., officers responded to Arcadia Supermarket, 645 W. Duarte Road, regarding a burglary report. Surveillance footage revealed the suspect smashed a side window, stole cash from the front desk, and fled undetected. The investigation is ongoing.

This year’s event theme is “Art in Motion,” and the featured artists’ will be Steve & Marianne McCarthy. Draft Stormwater Policy Developed by the SGV Cog Water Committee

During the past several months, the SGV COG Water Committee (which counts Council Member Crudgington among its members) has been working on the development of a comprehensive stormwater policy.

The proposed policy begins by offering the SGV COGs unequivocal support for meeting stormwater quality standards and using captured stormwater as a resource.

This perspective is followed by a listing of the challenges that have arisen as the MS4 permit process has unfolded, and also includes strategies that can be used to help cities comply.

This document is currently being reviewed by various SGV COG committees, and will likely be brought forward for the Governing Board’s consideration next month.

Letter to the Editor: Professor Thanks Paper for Keeping History Alive Dear Editor, How wonderful to see the article on Lt. Colonel Allen Allensworth on your 26 October 2016 edition. Your tribute - along with that of Mayor Tom Adams’ and KGEM’s Ralph Walker’s - is cause for pause.

As we worry about Americans in harm’s way in Mosul, and as we near Veteran’s Day, I reflect on the sacrifices of all soldiers.

But Allen Allensworth was more than just the highest ranking African American military officer of his time.

After his retirement from the Army, Allensworth fought even harder to build peace through equality. In Tulare County and in our Monrovia, Allensworth built communities for a better future. Monrovia’s Second Baptist Church, now on Shamrock, is a living testimonial to Allensworth’s vision.

As Muslims and Christians, as African Americans and police officers, as Amer-

ican-born and immigrants, we can build a lot together.

I hope Monrovia never forgets our role model, Allen Allensworth.

“The biggest problem is when those houses [get] burglarized or [have a] sprinkler problem or something, people don’t know where to call,” says Councilmember Sho Tay, adding, “If the house is vacant … [it makes it an] easier target.” He suggests owners who only occupy their houses on an irregular basis install timers on the lights to turn them on at certain times to make it look occupied.

t was 90 years ago when a wife and mother, Emily Bourne, decided to hold classes for her young daughter, Claire, and three of her friends from her home in San Marino and established Clairbourn School.

Today the school serves 266 junior preK to eighth grade students on a beautifully landscaped eight-acre expanse on Huntington Drive in San Gabriel and continues to provide an education based on its founder’s teaching philosophy.

By middle school students learn 3D design, computer simulations, digital photography, robotics, stop motion animation, and digital art design in addition to word processing, spreadsheet and presentation software.

School-owned iPads are used by first through third graders in the classrooms; fourth and fifth graders use school-owned laptops for writing and research activities.

Middle schoolers have a “Bring Your Own Laptop” program.

The Arts program in all grade level encompasses visual arts, music, drama, and public speaking.

One of the highlights of middle school at Clairbourn is the Huntingtower trip, an exchange program conceived by Dr. Robert Nafie in 2000 for students to become global citizens. In the 16 years since its inception, friendships and ties have been kept between Australian and American families as younger siblings stay with the same hosts as older siblings in previous years.

A trip to Costa Rica, which began over 12 years ago, gives seventh and eighth graders a science adventure, with Spanish exposure built in.

Several campus events get the entire Clairbourn community actively involved. The

Book Fair held in mid-October is an annual favorite. An Entrepreneurial Fair, now in its third year, encourages kids to be businessminded and inventive; it attracts even the youngest students to participate.

Improvements in facilities enrich the student as well as parent experience. The library was recently remodeled and has expanded the reading space available for kids.

The David Orndorff conference room was inaugurated at the beginning of the school year and has since become a favorite spot for book talks, and will later be used for student council and parent association meetings. The Paciorek batting cage will be constructed in the spring for Clairbourn athletes.

High school applications counseling starts in seventh grade to help students understand their options and how to prepare and apply. Students are required to take an interview preparation class, attend high school tours, and meet with admissions directors on campus. Clairbourn graduates go on to the most highly selective secondary institutes in the Pasadena area and boarding schools in California.

The Clairbourn community is at once close-knit and loyal – alum students come to visit often and former parents still volunteer for activities long after their children have left for college. It is this steadfast engagement that makes Clairbourn a school apart from all others.

t a small private school on Bradbourne Avenue in Duarte, called Foothill Oaks Academy (FOA), students as young two years old toddle into classrooms to learn under the guidance of caring experts who understand that this is a significant period in children’s development.

Created in 2011 through a merger between Anita Oaks School, which had been on the current campus since 1990, and Carden of the Foothills School in Monrovia, FOA has a combined total of over 100 years of delivering quality education and instilling core values to young children. The school boards and administrators developed the best methods and style gleaned from each school.

Teachers from the two institutions became the faculty of Foothill Oaks. The heads of both schools serve as co-directors, and Nancy Lopez remained on as the current principal.

She was responsible for expanding the science, technology, and music programs, as well as building the curriculum that exceeds California standards and on a par with other private schools’.

FOA recognizes the uniqueness of each child and provides every one of them the opportunity to reach his or her unlimited potential. It fosters an environment that blends ambitious academic program with varied enrichment activities. Students are encouraged to become lifelong learners and confident risk-takers, unafraid to accept challenges and

capable of growing into contributing, productive members of society.

Enrolment is kept consistently at 115 students who come from a wide area of the San Gabriel Valley, including Arcadia, Monrovia, Temple City, Pasadena, and Altadena to the west, to Glendora, La Verne, and Rancho Cucamonga to the east.

Twenty-five teachers are on the staff, 80 percent of whom have been teaching at FOA (or at Anita Oaks or Carden of the Foothills before that) for over ten years and 20 percent under a decade. Many of the faculty members hold advanced degrees.

Small class sizes make for an engaging classroom atmosphere. In pre-school, the student/ teacher ratio is 8-1; while in K-eighth grade, it’s 12-1.

From the moment preschool children, aged two to three, enter the gates of Foothill Oaks, they experience a variety of developmentally appropriate activities. Four- and five-year-olds in transitional kindergarten (TK) take morning classes to prepare them for reading, written language, and identification of basic math concepts; they are taught music, French and technology in the afternoon.

In kindergarten five-year-olds get their first exposure to in-depth academics – math, reading, writing, science and social studies.

Read-aloud sessions help build their listening and comprehension skills. Physical educa-

tion, French, art, music, special science, and technology round out the kindergarten week.

The foundational skills students gained in their early years at Foothill Oaks are challenged progressively through fifth grade, preparing them for the demanding middle school program. Science, social studies and geography lessons are taught at each grade level.

When they reach middle school, students receive in-depth instruction in language arts, history, geography, math, science, and Spanish. Teachers implement a variety of creative approaches in each subject and emphasize critical thinking skills.

Foothill Oaks offers enrichment courses from kindergarten through eighth grade. Art classes combine history and appreciation, with projects relevant to the artists and techniques studied.

Elementary students are introduced to French culture, basic vocabulary, foods, and projects as they get older. In middle school, the curriculum consists of a three-year Spanish program that enables most students to enter a Spanish Two or Honors class in the ninth grade.

Music is a participation- and enjoymentbased class. All students listen to a variety of music from different composers, and prepare for performances, which may include skits or short plays.

each grade level using activities designed to promote muscle development, and increase physical stamina. FOA is part of the Foothill Sports League where its athletes play against local private schools.

The technology curriculum begins with basic introduction, and goes on to guided use, to exploring and navigating operations and applications. By the end of the elementary years, word processing, collaboration tools, and technology-based presentations are learned and applied. Middle school students continue their multi-media and educational social networks learning.

Field trips are integrated in student activities. Fifth graders spend two nights at Rawhide Ranch to study animal science, vaulting, animal care and riding instruction.

Sixth and seventh grade students go on marine biology camp and science adventure camp on alternate years. And eighth graders head to Washington D.C. for a history/government-based field trip.

FOA graduates attend selective high schools where they take with them the selfdiscipline, coupled with an awareness of the world around them, they learned during their years on campus.

My Family’s Independent School Experience

H

aving children is a lifelong commitment that brings with it tremendous joy as it begets vast responsibilities. One of every parent’s primary concerns when raising kids is ensuring them an education that not only teaches reading, writing, math, and science but also prepares them for life beyond school.

My husband and I decided to give our daughter a private school education and that journey began when she was only two years old. I enrolled her in a co-op where parents are expected to work alongside a teacher and an assistant teacher in class.

It turned out to be a really fun experience for both of us. My daughter and I enjoyed being at school two mornings during the week. She learned to draw and sing; I handed out snacks and drinks, cleaned after the little kids and them took them to the potty.

My daughter stayed at the co-op for only one year. The following school year, she attended a Montessori school. It was there that she learned reading, writing and math. Having helped out in the classroom the previous year, I also assisted the teacher and her aide.

By the time my daughter was four years old, she had outgrown the Montessori system. She was ready for traditional education and our quest for the right inde-

pendent school commenced.

Pasadena has several outstanding private schools but the competition to get accepted to one of them is fierce. We went on countless campus tours and applied to six schools; she was waitlisted on all but one, and it was in La Canada. Like in her previous two schools, she did extremely well in class, was adored by her teachers, and was well-liked by her classmates.

Private schools are completely funded by parents and tuition only covers a portion of what’s needed to run them; the parents association has to raise funds for enrichment programs. To fill the library or add books to its current offering, for instance, the association holds book fairs. So in addition to driving kids on field trips, I also volunteered for the book fair. Then I got braver and chaired the spring auction.

This benefit gala is usually a school’s largest fundraiser and proceeds from it are used for field trips, or to get computers for the classrooms.

The drive from Pasadena to La Canada, though, got too tiring for both of us; she couldn’t stand sitting in the car for long. I had kept in touch with the admissions director at one of the private schools where she had been waitlisted. My daughter reapplied and luckily got accepted when a family had to relocate and leave the school.

I was ecstatic – the school is a mile away from our house!

My daughter excelled in class, even played the piano for the entire school during morning assembly. I was again involved in the parent association. One year I managed the school store which carried snacks and drinks for after-school sports, provided pizza and drinks for dances, and even sold school uniforms, sports clothing and gym bags.

In the first ten years of my daughter’s life, she had attended four different schools. In all of them students were expected to excel in academics, have a passion for artistic expression, and possess an athletic ability. Besides raising funds, parents were counted on to be partners in their children’s education – ensuring that the kids came to school prepared to do the work.

In middle and high school, my daughter attended the school of all schools in Pasadena. Every student and parent for miles around want to be there, and applying to it is sport. I found out that its culture is vastly different from all the ones she previously attended when I signed up for the book fair. I was very excited to sit in the very first meeting and had a lot of ideas, only to be told it wasn’t a fund-raising event. In fact, this school had no other

fund-raising activity besides the annual fund.

My daughter was there for seven years, the longest she had ever stayed in one school, and had the best time. She found like-minded friends, was challenged by the vigorous curriculum, and earned the admiration of teachers.

I, on the other hand, wasn’t welcome on campus. To be fair, no parent was made wanted on campus. In fact, when I inquired about parent-teacher conferences in high school, the ninth grade dean informed me there was no such thing. Teachers were busy with students and didn’t have time to talk with parents. The only time parents stepped on campus was if their children had either academic or behavioral problems.

This school did not have the community atmosphere I expected. While my experience there hadn’t been pleasant, I am grateful for the fine education my daughter received. And, at the end of the day, that was what mattered.

My daughter graduated from high school two years ago and is now a thirdyear student at the third-ranked university in the United Kingdom. She’s fully engaged in campus life and enjoying being selfreliant – skills she learned from her early education.

A new dramatic building will rise along N. Santa Avenue in Arcadia when Arroyo Pacific Academy expands its campus. Two additional buildings will join the Clarke Center encompassing two parking plazas and interconnecting walkways. La Salle High School

a Salle High School (LSHS) was established in early 1955 when the Archdiocese of Los Angeles began construction on a new secondary school on the corner of East Sierra Madre Boulevard and Michillinda Avenue in Pasadena. The Cardinal Archbishop of Los Angeles invited the Christian Brothers, whose reputation for innovative excellence in education dates back to 1680, to administrate the new institution. This created a Roman Catholic college preparatory school enriched by the tradition of La Sallian education developed

by St. John de Baptist de la Salle, founder of the Christian Brothers.

In November of that same year, construction started on the school’s main building which housed eight classrooms, science labs, mechanical drawing and typing rooms, library, bookstore, audio-visual room, cafeteria, locker room, and offices. The Brothers’ residence and chapel were also built.

During the 1956-1957 schoolyear, LSHS officially opened with Brother Celestine Cormier, FSC, as its first principal, and admitted 117 ninth grade boys from 14 nearby communities. By 1964 enrollment had grown to 450 students and a faculty of 11 Christian Brothers and six lay teachers.

In 1965, the Michillinda wing of the school was completed – with a library, biology lab, five additional classrooms, an assembly hall, student bookstore, seminar room and faculty offices.

place in 1986. With that, construction of a girls’ locker room and a Band Room also started. And so in the Fall of 1991 women were admitted to La Salle for the first time.

Coincidentally, the school also fielded its very first football team.

To meet the growing needs of students, La Salle embarked on an expansion project in 1996. This project included the relocation of the school library, a new dining hall, a 200seat amphitheater, and an expanded weight room. It also added a three-story wing which extended down Michillinda to accommodate four state-of-the-art science labs, general classrooms, student life office, chapel, dance studio, faculty center, and administrative

offices. The improvements allowed for an enrollment of 750, and a richer educational setting for students and athletes.

A special anniversary liturgy and reception at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels capped La Salle’s 50th anniversary celebration on May 15, 2007.

Today LSHS has 700 students from ninth to 12th grades, with two-thirds of incoming freshmen who are Catholics. 15 percent of its enrolment are from low income families and receive full or partial assistance through the scholarship fund.

The largest private high school in Pasadena, LSHS offers a diversity of opportunities for a balanced education. Students have

a choice of 16 advanced placement and 15 honors courses; an award-winning fouryear visual and performing arts department, including a regionally known film and digital media concentration; a robust Student Leadership program supporting elected and appointed student officers; honor and service societies; student clubs; and robotics.

Westridge School for Girls

I

n 1913, at a time when girls were expected to grow up to become housewives, a forward thinking and accomplished architect and teacher, Mary Lowther Ranney, founded a school to provide education for women who want to attend college. Westridge School opened its doors to its first 21 students on Madeline Drive in Pasadena.

103 years later, Westridge is home to 500 girls from fourth through 12th grade who are intellectually adventurous, critical and independent thinkers. They are leaders and active participants in an active and purposeful community.

Westridge has an extensive curriculum that covers the humanities, STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) and the arts. Over 100 courses, including 15 advanced placement and eight honors courses, are offered in the middle and upper school.

The school’s distinctive humanities program helps girls develop their sense of self, giving them the confidence to express their thoughts clearly and in a strong voice. Discussions on English and cultural studies and history begin in the early grades. All upper school students take AP English and are prepared for seminar-style courses with faculty members guiding dialogues that focus on interpretation, evidence, and learning from others’ approaches to texts.

STEM courses are analytical and laboratory-based where students get deeply involved in understanding method, presentation, and articulating and defending conclusions.

Westridge offers a Research in Science elective which pairs students with universities and research institutions including Caltech, Occidental College and Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. Seniors learn from scientists at Caltech and Children’s Hospital and take part in hands-on research in computational biology, particle astrophysics, cellular biology, and environmental geology.

In the summer of 2015 the school debuted the STEAM Work design Studio which offers hands-on disciplinary work creating, inventing, and building. It is open for class and individual work by students in all grades in three areas – 3D design and printing, coding and robotics, and electronics and circuits.

Upper school science lecture and lab spaces are outfitted with wireless laptops for every student; sixth, seventh, and eighth grades have 1-1 tablet program.

The Westridge Tigers compete in basketball, cross country, equestrian, golf, lacrosse, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, track & field, volleyball, and water polo. The counseling office offers a college tour each spring and hosts over 25 events every year. Each fall, representatives from more than 130 colleges and universities visit the campus to meet with seniors.

A comprehensive “case study” featuring dozens of college representatives is offered.

The class of 2016 received 267 acceptances to 114 colleges and universities. 70 percent of those who applied

through early action gained acceptance; four out of 47 students got full merit scholarships; 75 percent earned one or more scholarships from the schools to which they were accepted. 55 percent matriculated to their first choice school, 85 percent to one of their top three choices.

Announcing the Release of $100 Million in College Readiness Grants State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson today announced that nearly 1,000 local educational agencies (LEA), including school districts, county offices of education, and charter schools, will receive about $100 million in grants to help students prepare to attend college.

The grants, which are available for expenditure through the 2018–19 fiscal year, come from a $200 million College Readiness Block Grant (CRBG) program administered by the California Department of Education (CDE) and approved by the Governor and the Legislature.

The grants were established to increase the number of students who enroll in institutions of higher education and complete an undergraduate degree in four years, with a special emphasis on helping English learners, economically disadvantaged students, and foster youth.

“Every student should have a chance to attend college. These grants provide funds for expanding our students’ access and improving

their readiness for higher education—a top priority as we prepare them for 21st century careers,” Torlakson said. “I am pleased to support an investment that gives our students the right tools to prepare for and succeed in higher education.”

Among other things, the funds can be used to pay Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate examination fees; develop or purchase materials that support college readiness, including college entrance exam preparation; counseling services for students; expand access to coursework or other opportunities to satisfy a-g course requirements; and send teachers, counselors, and administrators to professional development opportunities related to college readiness.

While LEAs do not need to apply to receive the CRBG funds, there are other requirements such as the development and adoption of a local plan, and the submission of a report to the California Department of Education on how the LEA will measure the impact of the funds received.

The CRBG funding comes from Senate Bill 828 of 2016, which authorizes the allocation of $200 million to county offices of education, school districts, and charter schools that reported unduplicated students (English learners, economically disadvantaged students and foster youth) in grades nine through twelve during the 2015 - 2016 fiscal year.

The CDE will allocate the funds in two installments. The first installment, to be paid in 2016, reflects approximately 50 percent of each LEA’s entitlement based on eligible students. Remaining funds will be released in spring of 2017.

Early filing opened Oct. 1 for state and federal financial aid through the California Student Aid Commission (CSAC) Web site, where the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the California Dream Act Application (CADAA) can be found.

Applications are due by March 2, 2017, and are a key step in helping eligible students pay for college.

deepen an appreciation of reading and literature by recommending a compelling book that sparks a community conversation on important issues.

The winner of the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, as well as five other awards, “The Sympathizer” is the

breakthrough novel of the year. With the pace and suspense of a thriller and prose that has been compared to Graham Greene and Saul Bellow, “The Sympathizer” is a sweeping story of love and betrayal. The narrator, a communist double agent, is a “man of two minds,” a

half-French, half-Vietnamese army captain who arranges to come to America after the Fall of Saigon.

While building a new life with other Vietnamese refugees in Los Angeles, he is secretly reporting back to his communist superiors in Vietnam. “The Sympathizer”

is a blistering exploration of identity and America, a gripping espionage novel, and a powerful story of love and friendship.

Nguyen was born in Vietnam and raised in America. His stories have appeared in Best New American Voices, TriQuarterly, Narrative and the Chicago Tribune, and he is the author of the academic book Race and Resistance and the nonfiction book Nothing Ever Dies: Vietnam and

the Memory of War. Nguyen teaches English and American Studies at the University of Southern California and lives in Los Angeles.

This past week, staff had additional meetings with representatives who initiated the rehabilitation of the property at 209 W. Scenic Ave. without the proper permits. The construction company responsible for the work did this past week pay their administrative citation fine of $2,000. Furthermore, representatives from the company have agreed to bring their plans forward for Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) review.

We are currently awaiting the requisite application materials from Coronado

Construction, and should we receive those documents in time, we will be scheduling the overall project for HPC review at the Nov. 30 meeting. As we have worked through the matter, the company at fault has expressed their apologies for not better managing the overall process that resulted in demolition work occurring prior to the proper permits being issued, and the ownership group has committed to investing the time and funds necessary to perform a proper restoration of the property at 209 W. Scenic Ave.

Traffic Collision and Vehicle Burglary Arrests in Arcadia Shortly after 3:40 p.m., on Saturday Oct. 22, 2016, a citizen flagged down an Arcadia Police Officer in the parking lot of the Westfield Santa Anita Mall to identify the suspects of multiple vehicle burglaries. The officer attempted to stop the suspects’ vehicle, and they failed to yield.

The officer pursued the vehicle from 400 S. Baldwin Ave. to the area of Huntington Drive and First Ave., where the officer cancelled the pursuit. The suspects’ vehicle sideswiped another vehicle near the intersection of Sec-

ond Avenue. The occupant of the other vehicle was not injured. The suspects drove southbound on Second Avenue, and they failed to stop for the red light at Duarte Road. A Toyota pickup truck was traveling eastbound on Duarte Road, and it struck the passenger side of the suspect vehicle. The suspects’ vehicle then struck a third vehicle that was stopped for the northbound red light.

One occupant of the pickup truck suffered a moderate injury, and she was transported to a local hospital for treatment. All three suspects

fled their vehicle, and two were arrested nearby.

The suspects were identified as Tiyon Tyree Farley, a 19-year-old resident of Vallejo, and Jabril Marcelle Tom, a 21-year- old resident of San Francisco. Both were charged with PC 459 – vehicle burglary, VC 2800.2(a) – evading, and VC 20001(a) – failure to stop at the scene of an accident. The suspects are being treated at a local hospital for injuries they received in the collision. The suspects will be booked at the Arcadia Police Department, and their bail is $75,000.

This incident is being investigated by the Arcadia Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team.

hey say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, but Pasadena’s Dog Haus has spent the last six years putting a scrumptious spin on a perennial foodie favorite: the not-so-humble hot dog.

Founded in Pasadena in 2010 by friends Hagop Giragossian, Quasim Riaz and André Vener, Dog Haus’s popularity quickly spread to greater Los Angeles and beyond. My Philosophy a Bit Extenuated

dmittedly the older we get the more the odds are stacked against us but, life is as fleeting as a breath and death makes no distinction between the young and the old. Thus, I can't stress enough the importance of savoring each moment. That's my philosophy but I forget it all too frequently.

I can get really ticked off over little and big things that aren't going to mean a diddly squat to the future of the world or even to my own future except when I let them tick me off. That ruins my day and it may be

the last day I have.

This morning a “friend” looked at my little old car and said, "Why don't you buy a car that is a car? At your age you should be driving a big one..." Now I had two things there that could tick me off. He attacked my little car of which I am so proud and he insinuated I am too old to be driving it.

My mind flashed back to a point just over 49 years ago when I had bought a new Camaro. Someone made a similar comment the day I drove it home and I let it cast a shadow over my pleasure and upset me for weeks.

This time I was older and wiser. I smiled, gave

him the finger, said "Get a life and have a good day" and drove off. How's that for a gal too old to drive a little car? Maybe not real nice but it made me feel good and I had smiled and wished him a good day. I think that was pretty generous of me under the circumstances.

Emily Dickinson wrote, "To be alive is power existence in itself without a further function omnipotence enough." She must have been in a good mood. I am too. I didn't let my “friend” tick me off for long. I'm alive, I have nine more fingers, plenty of smiles and I wish us all a good day.

That's my philosophy a bit extenuated.

Defense Secretary Suspends ‘all efforts to collect reimbursement … ’

By Terry Miller Just in time for Veterans Day next month, those bean counters at the Pentagon had a special ‘ thank you for your service’ for those who signed up for National Guard to fight for their country in Afghanistan and Iraq.

These men and women were offered financial incentives to enlist and now the Pentagon wants it back…they claim it was a mistake.

The absurdity of it is stunning, even by government standards. Local congress members are spearheading a united front against the Pentagon and hoping for victory against this demand when Congress returns in November.

However, after a plethora of publicity, the Pantagon has been orderd to stop seeking those repayments of enlistment bonuses.

Secretary of Defense Ash Carter said Wednesday he is suspending “all efforts to collect reimbursement” from improperly awarded enlistment bonuses given to some member of the California National Guard, following outrage from veterans and their families over attempts to recover the money 10 years after it was disbursed.

“I have ordered the Defense Finance and Accounting Service to suspend all efforts to collect reimbursement from affected California National Guard members, effective as soon as is practical,” Carter said in a statement, adding this suspension will continue until “I am satisfied that our process is working effectively.”

Ten years ago, the California National Guard began offering bonuses of $15,000 or more to encourage enlistment in order to meet our country’s needs to fight the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

This week, it was reported that the Pentagon is requiring nearly 10,000 veterans to return that money, stating that these cash incentives were improperly distributed. Rep. Judy Chu (CA-27) released the following statement: “I am proud of the Californians who answered our call when we needed men and women to serve and defend our country. And I am equally as shocked that now, those same men and women are being asked to pay for another’s mistake. The Pentagon’s error has now turned into a penalty for others, with many soldiers facing excessive interest charges, tax liens, and even wage garnishments if they do not comply. These servicemen and women acted in good faith, at times extending their years of service in exchange for these bonuses – years of their lives they cannot get back. It is now the responsibility of Congress to provide a legislative fix to address this error. I call on the Department of Defense to halt these collections and for Congressional leadership to bring up legislation for a vote as soon as we return in November.”

Rep. Adam Schiff (DCA) called on the California National Guard and the Pentagon to immediately halt efforts to obtain repayment of enlistment bonuses, student loan payments, and other payments granted incorrectly

to members of the California Guard.

In a letter to Adjutant General of the California National Guard David Baldwin, Schiff pushed the Guard to immediately halt these efforts saying that “seeking reimbursement for these funds when they were accepted in good faith imposes a substantial financial hardship on those who have served our nation and their families.”

In the letter, Schiff also announced that he is working on a legislative remedy for when Congress is back in session in November. In a statement accompanying the letter, Schiff stated: “The men and women of the National Guard serve our nation well, and they deserve better than being hounded for repayment of enlistment bonuses and other benefits they were mistakenly provided through no fault of their own.

These soldiers enlisted during the Iraq and Afghanistan wars and frequently served overseas, and we owe them a debt that we can never repay, but we can start by ensuring they are not subject to tax liens or wage garnishments based on the errors of others. Congress can, and I believe will, address this unacceptable situation, and in the meantime the California National Guard should suspend all debt collection activities against these soldiers.”

Monrovia Clinches Perfect League Record on Senior Night STORY AND PHOTOS

By Christian Romo Monrovia Junior Kaila Tagavilla spent much of warm-ups practicing handshakes with her teammates.

They rehearsed chest bumps, shoulder bumps, dips, daps, and dabs, all of which needing to be perfected before the pre-match ceremony.

For the visiting San Marino Titans, who needed to win for a shot at a playoff spot, this game mattered.

But for the Monrovia Wildcats, who last week clinched their first Rio Hondo League title, their final match of the regular season was of second importance to whom they were honoring.

So after Monrovia coach Wayne Teng announced the starting lineups, and after Tagavilla and company performed the requisite dips, daps, and dabs, the Wildcats began the match rotating only seven players: Harmony Tsui, Emily Ramirez, Vivian But, Riley Carius, Angie Castañeda, Madison Mayoralgo, and Stephanie Perez.

All seniors. All champions.

“It’s amazing to be able

to achieve this with my team … I’ll remember how close of a family we were,” said Mayoralgo, whose leadership helped the Wildcats to unprecedented success this season.

Castañeda, the team’s vocal leader, shared a similar sentiment: “We all worked as a team together, we all found our own niches and used them to play the game, and just played our hearts out.”

When asked about their favorite memories, Perez and Carius gave the same response. “[I’ll remember] practice, when we play around and we’re happy,” said Perez. Carius elaborated, saying: “I’m probably going to remember when we’re all dancing and being silly, and Coach Teng yelling at us for not being on task.”

It was a bittersweet moment for many of the girls. “It was really fun and exciting, and it’s emotional at the same time,” said Ramirez. But called the experience “awesome” and “nerve-wracking,” adding: “I wouldn’t have asked for a better team.” Perez said she was sad, but that she’ll always remember her “best

senior teammates, often fighting tears and laughter while reminiscing about their friends. Each senior gave a flower necklace to a family member as well during the post-game ceremony, and the team spent over a half-hour taking pictures with friends and family after the ceremony.

Despite everyone else celebrating their achievements, all of the seniors deferred to their teammates before mentioning themselves, most often referring

to one another as family.

“There is no doubt that this group has that strong character,” said Teng, calling them all great citizens of the community.

Though the regular season is over, it was not the final home game for Monrovia’s seniors. After beating the Titans in four sets and clinching a perfect league record, the Wildcats will host a playoff game next week, and if they are fortunate, maybe a few more after that.

Teng this afternoon emphasized his team’s citizenship, education, and character, but he neglected to mention one important aspect: their on-court success. This group of seniors is the core of the best volleyball team Monrovia has seen in a generation, and they’re all hopeful they can bring a trophy back to campus. But however the season ends for the Wildcats, the fans will remember this season and this group of seniors as truly one of a kind.

Tigers Sweep Cubs, Win First League Title in 10 Years

By Christian Romo Westridge’s loss against Chadwick last week gave Mayfield an outside shot at a Prep League title heading into their final game against the Tigers. It didn’t take long for Westridge, however, to demonstrate why they deserved a league championship.

Winning a share of their first Prep League title since 2006, the Westridge Tigers (24-5, 10-2 in Prep) swept the visiting Mayfield Cubs (15-12-1, 8-4) (25-23, 25-11, 25-15) in their final regular season match Tuesday night in Pasadena. Though both teams traded points throughout the first set, the Tigers found an offensive rhythm that overpowered the Cubs in a one-sided second set.

Westridge Junior Allison Martinez (1) led the Tigers attack, recording 21 kills (seven in each set), along with three aces, two blocks, and a dig. “We had a lot of momentum going in this game…so we used that to our advantage,” said Martinez.

Junior Makana Meyer (13) got the title-clinching kill, contributing ten kills, five digs, and an ace. “As a team, we played with a lot of heart, a lot of focus, and didn’t let external things get in the way,” said Meyer.

Chadwick’s win against Flintridge Prep means that Westridge will share the league

title with the Dolphins, but that doesn’t diminish the accomplishment for the Tigers.

“I’ve been waiting for this the past two years,” said Martinez, “and I’m really excited I got to do it with this group of seniors.”

The Cubs improved throughout the season, winning five of their previous six league games, but they couldn’t write the surprise ending to the contentious Prep League season. “I felt like we had low energy, and we had a mentality that the game was already over when the score was 0-0,” said Cubs Senior Andrea Raymundo (14).

Mayfield, who finished the season in a tie for third with Poly, couldn’t build upon Junior Olivia Smith’s (1) front-line stand.

Smith led all players with seven blocks, managing Mayfield’s imposing defense as the Cubs head into the playoffs.

“I’m just looking forward to showing up some more teams that people think are better than us,” said Smith, “and just playing our absolute best.” Raymundo was also optimistic about her team’s postseason chances, saying: “I feel like with a little more confidence and trust with each other and in ourselves, we can make it far in the playoffs.”

Westridge enters the Division 4 playoffs with high hopes, though they will contend with such local powers as Monrovia and Arcadia, both league champions with
