AHA! Art Happens Anywhere — Calling for Artists The City of Glendale Arts & Culture Commission is accepting proposals from artists to participate in its new program, AHA! -- Art Happens Anywhere! Artists of all artistic genres, art organizations, or schools may submit proposals intended to delight

the public with pop-up art and engage people in social conversation. The City of Glendale’s Library, Arts & Culture Department and the City’s Arts & Culture Commission encourage the expansion of arts and culture activities to benefit

the citizens of our community, and to provide artists with new and interesting opportunities to share their art. AHA! is one of a roster of programs in the Arts & Culture Work Plan. Its specific purpose is to stimulate the public with non-traditional

artwork, art experiences, and performances in unexpected public places. Public places include parks and recreation centers, the City Hall complex, libraries, streets and sidewalks, airspace, busses, transit stops, the Glendale Transportation Center, pedes-

The artwork may be a onetime event or installation, or it may be a series of events or installations. Artwork must not impede the public rightof-way or access by individuals with a disability. See the website to download the call for artists and insurance requirements: http://bit.ly/18ACRwT Projects can be proposed for any time period between the due date of this Call for Artists and March 2017. It is anticipated that some projects may be designed to work in concert with the holiday shopping season in Glendale, which draws millions of

visitors to Downtown Glendale, Montrose, and other commercial areas of the City each year. Through new art currency such as innovative use of technology, audience interactivity, and unconventional delivery methods, AHA! seeks to foster progressive attitudes toward art, artmaking and performance, and to elevate the role of art in enhancing a community. A total allocation of $30,000 has been budgeted for AHA! Project budgets from $3,000 to $15,000 will be considered, with the expectation that higher cost projects would have longer lasting and further reaching impact. AHA! is supported by the City of Glendale and the Glendale Arts & Culture Commission with funding from the Urban Art Program.

In a motion introduced today at the Board of Supervisors meeting, Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich is calling for a report back in two weeks on expanding the use of detection canines to the Probation Department’s D.I.S.A.R.M. program. Initiated by Antonovich in February 2000, the D.I.S.A.R.M. (Developing Increased Safety through Arms Reduction Management) program has conducted over 228,331 searches seizing nearly 11,000 weapons and drugs

valued at approximately $730 million from high-risk probationers. “Having personally participated in D.I.S.A.R.M. search operations, I have witnessed the challenges faced by these probation officers and the vital need for canine assistance,” Antonovich said. “The use of these specially-trained dogs for detection of weapons and narcotics can improve safety concerns and allow residents to resume their normal daily activities sooner and with less disruption.”

defendants turned their attention to them. Barrientos then came to the aid of his neighbors but was stabbed to death by defendant Adauta, the prosecutor added. According to witness testimony, Garcia and Barrientos were neighbors. Barrientos complained days before his murder about graffiti in front of his house put there by one of Garcia’s fellow gang members. The attack on Barrientos was in response to the complaint about the

graffiti, the prosecutor said. All three defendants also were found guilty of the willful, deliberate and premeditated attempted murder and the assault with a knife on the two neighbors that came to help Barrientos. The jury also found true that all of the crimes were committed for the benefit of, at the direction of, or in association with a criminal street gang. The case was investigated by the Los Angeles Police Department, Valley Bureau.

An unusual motherdaughtercombo of Temple City powerlifters are getting regional and national attention for their feats of strength. Amber Grace, 13, an Oak Avenue Intermediate School student, and her mother Wendy Grace, 44, recently began training for powerlifting meets, and they’ve already broken barbell-hefting records. Latina magazine, a national publication and website, just released a feature article about them, along with a photograph of them in matching Wonder Woman costumes. The article is at http://www.latina.com/ lifestyle/health/latinamother-daughter-powerlifting-team. Amber and her par-

ents Wendy and Chris, who own the Mission Street Fitness Center in San Marino, were also featured in a recent segment of the ABC news program “Eye on LA.” The portion about the Graces starts at around 18:00 on this page: http://abc7. com/1507500/. In competition, Amber has hefted barbells weighing over 100 lbs. Her accomplishment shattered stereotypes about girls and strength, including the incorrect belief that powerlifting builds bulky muscles in women. Now Amber is training for more competitions, alongside her mother. They are winning medals in powerlifting while bonding and having a great time.

On Tuesday, Oct. 11, a 44-year-old woman appeared in the Governor George Deukmejian Courthouse in Long Beach regarding a family law matter. When the proceeding concluded at 4 p.m., the woman was visibly upset and she threatened to commit suicide as she ran from the 3rd floor courtroom and up the escalator. An unidentified male court patron flagged down Deputy Joseph Bennett in the 3rd floor hallway and reported what he saw. Deputy Bennett initiated a radio broadcast for assistance and ran up the escalator in search of the suicidal woman. When Deputy Bennett reached the 5th floor landing at the top of the escalator, he saw the woman had climbed over the 5-foot tall glass partition that separates the 5th floor landing from the lobby floor down below. The woman was despondent and crying as her body dangled over the lobby floor with only her hands gripping the top of the glass partition. Deputy Bennett immediately reached over the glass partition, grabbed the woman’s left wrist, and held her entire body weight with both of his hands to keep her from falling 5-stories to the lobby floor down below. Deputy Danny Delgadillo and Deputy Ivan Delatorre arrived a few seconds later and assisted Deputy Bennett in pulling the woman up and over the

glass partition to safety. Although the woman did not appear to have any injuries, she was evaluated

GROUND BREAKING FORECLOSURE RULING! The California Supreme Court ruled on February 18, 2016 that a homeowner has the right to challenge his lender's authority to foreclose based upon void assignments of the loan to third parties. The high court expressly upheld an earlier California Appellate opinion called Glaski v Bank of America. This decision could set aside many foreclosures and/or obtain monetary damages, settle lawsuits with modifications and prevent foreclosures from happening in the first place. This decision will hopefully provide our firm with even more legal leverage to not only set aside many foreclosures and /or obtain money damages, but settle lawsuits with modifications and prevent foreclosures from happening in the first place. Homeless Registered Sex Offender Charged With Rape A 48-year-old homeless man has been charged with raping a woman at a closed grocery store parking lot in Glendale, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office recently announced. Deputy District Attorney Miguel Espinoza said Michael Zinzun faces one count each of forcible rape, forcible oral copulation, sexual penetration by foreign object, kidnapping to commit rape and

resisting arrest. Case GA099762 includes the allegation that the defendant was convicted in Florida for a sexual assault in 1998 and burglary in 2005. Arraignment is scheduled this afternoon in Department 1 of the Los Angeles County Superior Court, Glendale Branch. In the early hours of Sept. 29, Zinzun is accused of dragging a woman who was sleeping on a bench to a park-

ing lot and sexually assaulting her, the prosecutor said. A witness called 911 and when police arrived the defendant fled but was arrested soon after, the prosecutor added. If convicted as charged, Zinzun faces a possible maximum sentence of life in state prison. Bail has been set at more than $3.3 million. The case remains under investigation by the Glendale Police Department.

How to Sell High: Avoid these Three Mistakes When Selling Your Home

Alhambra - When you decide to sell your home, setting your optimal asking price is one of the most important decisions you will ever make. Price is often the first thing a prospective buyer sees, and many homes are passed over as “not in our price range” before the home even has a chance of being shown. Your asking price is often your home’s “first impression,” and if you want to realize the most money you can for your home, it’s imperative that you make an excellent first impression. This is not as easy as it sounds,

and pricing strategy should not be taken lightly. Pricing too high can be as costly to a homeseller as pricing too low. Comparing against what other homes in your neighborhood have sold for is only a small part of the process, and by itself is not nearly enough to help you make the best decision. A recently study, which compiles 10 years of industry research, has resulted in a new special report entitled “Homesellers: How to Get the Price You Want (and Need).” This report will help you understand pricing strategy from three different angles. When taken

together, this information will help you price your home to sell fast, and sell for top dollar. To order your FREE Special Report, call toll-free 1-888-3004632 and enter 1016. State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson today selected five outstanding educators as the 2017 California Teachers of the Year. “I am pleased to honor five dedicated and hardworking teachers who use their creativity and talents every day to make a huge difference in their classrooms,” Torlakson said. “These inspiring and innovative teachers enrich the lives of our students while helping them to succeed in 21st century careers and college. These teachers represent the best of their profession and serve as great examples.” Presented by California Casualty and the California Teachers of the Year Foundation, the California Teachers of the Year Program began in 1972 to honor outstanding teachers and encourage new teachers to enter the profession. The 2017 winners are: Megan Gross is an autism spectrum disorder teacher for ninth through twelfth graders at Del Norte High School, Poway Unified School District, in San Diego. Torlakson also nominated Gross as California’s representative for the National Teacher of the Year

competition. Gross will compete against other state nominees, and a 2017 National Teacher of the Year will be named in the spring. Shaun S. Bunn teaches mathematics to eighth graders at Ethan A. Chase Middle School, Romoland School District, Menifee, Riverside County. Corinne (Corrie) Traynor is a fifth grade multi-subject teacher at Barrett Ranch Elementary School, Dry Creek Joint Elementary School District, Antelope, Placer County. Yun (Jenny) Tzu Anderson teaches science, technology, engineering, and mathematics to students in kindergarten through fifth grade at Casita Center for Technology, Science, and Math, Vista Unified, Vista, San Diego County. Isela Lieber teaches English, English as a Second Language (ESL), and ESL science to ninth and tenth graders at James Monroe High School, Los Angeles Unified School District, North Hills, Los Angeles County. Torlakson, who served as Acting Governor for three days this summer, issued a “Be a Teacher” proclamation and continues to encourage peo-

ple to enter the profession. “Teachers play a pivotal role in helping young people get excited about learning and achieving success, but right now California is experiencing a significant shortage,” Torlakson said. Visit the Teach California Web site for more information. County offices of education nominate California Teachers of the Year winners through their county-level competitions. A state selection committee reviews candidates' applications and conducts site visits to evaluate the teachers' rapport with students, classroom environment, presentation skills, and teaching methods. The teachers are interviewed by the California Department of Education (CDE). The State Superintendent then selects the five awardees. The 2017 California Teachers of the Year, finalists, and semifinalists will be honored by Torlakson at a gala to be held in Sacramento on February 13, 2017. For more information on the award program, please visit the CDE's California Teachers of the Year Web page.

Aflac Goes Pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month Not many things in life are certain, but odds are you will unfortunately face at least one health event that requires hospitalization and, following that, rehabilitation. While hospitals provide an array of helpful rehab services, most people prefer to get well in the comfort of their own homes. Although beneficial in the recovery process, home care can also have its own distinct obstacles. Couple that with a patient’s fears and struggles of what’s to come in the weeks and months ahead, and it can create a perfect storm for both patients and caregivers. To help, the Association of Rehabilitation Nurses (ARN), a nearly 6,000-member worldwide organization, has created ReSTART Recovery, an online resource that provides information for those who are (or will be) in rehab for everything from strokes to joint replacements to head injuries, and for those who will be caring for them. When you consider that recent studies cite as many

Community Health Alliance of Pasadena Continues Partnership With Foothill Transit. Community Health Alliance of Pasadena (ChapCare) announces its continued partnership with Foothill Transit to provide health education and increased access to primary healthcare services. Foothill Transit, the primary public transit provider of the San Gabriel and Pomona Valleys, has again donated advertising space on 330 buses and five transit stores. Since September, ChapCare ads have been displayed on the interior of Foothill Transit buses, to bring awareness to important community health issues and to educate community members on how to access primary healthcare services at ChapCare. As a result of this campaign, underrepresented, underserved, and underinsured families in the cities of

Pasadena, Monrovia, Duarte, Arcadia, El Monte and South El Monte, will receive this information in both English and Spanish. For 2016 to 2017, key community health issues in the San Gabriel Valley to be addressed through this campaign include: -Immunizations – Did you know? By 2 years old, children should have their vaccinations to protect against 14 preventable diseases. -Vision – Did you know? 76 percent of children haven’t had an eye exam by age 5. By age 5, children should have already had 3 eye exams. Dental – Did you know? Tooth decay is the number one childhood chronic disease. By 1 year old, children should have their first dental visit.

-Mens’ Health – Did you know? Women are 100 percent more likely to visit the doctor for annual exams and preventative healthcare services than men. “ChapCare continues to educate community members on key health issues that are affecting the San Gabriel Valley,” said Margaret B. Guiding Treatment of Advanced Breast Cancer Using Subtypes For patients with breast cancer, knowing whether the diagnosis is early stage or advanced is needed to help treat the disease. Vice-President and Chief Medical Officer for Georgia Cancer Specialists, Cheryl Jones, MD, has experience in treating patients with advanced breast cancer, an incurable but treatable disease, which comprises metastatic (stage IV) and locally advanced (stage III) breast cancer. Metastatic breast cancer occurs when the cancer spreads to other parts of the body and is treated differently than earlier stages of the disease. Dr. Jones explains the importance of understanding tumor subtypes to help patients become more involved in treatment discussions. Here she addresses questions about the different subtypes, which include human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 positive (HER2+) and hormone receptor-positive (HR+). Q: How do HR and HER2 status help determine a treatment plan? Dr. Jones: Each tumor’s

genetic makeup helps oncologists identify the best approach to the treatment of advanced breast cancer. HR+ tumors, which occur in approximately 70 percent of cases, are fueled by hormones like estrogen and progesterone. Therefore, postmenopausal patients may benefit from hormonal therapy, such as an aromatase inhibitor, which blocks the production of estrogen from helping the cancer grow. If the breast cancer is HR-, accounting for about 15-20 percent of cases in the US, then we treat with drugs other than hormonal therapy, such as chemotherapy. If the tumor overexpresses the HER2 gene it is known as HER2+ and requires aggressive treatment such as with drugs that target the HER2 protein. This occurs in about one in five breast cancers. Q: What are the biggest considerations when treating advanced breast cancer subtypes? Dr. Jones: For advanced HR+/HER2- breast cancer, we consider how this type can outsmart hormonal

therapy over time and become resistant, resulting in tumor progression. Treatments exist that may extend the benefits of hormonal therapy. For example, Afinitor (everolimus) is a prescription medicine used to treat advanced HR+/ HER2- breast cancer, along with the medicine exemestane (an aromatase inhibitor), in postmenopausal women who have already received certain other medicines for their cancer. Afinitor can cause serious side effects, including lung or breathing problems, infections and kidney failure which can lead to death. Even though HER2+ tumors tend to be more aggressive, HER2 targeted treatments also exist. Tumors that are both HER2- and HR-, known as triple negative breast cancer, cannot be treated with HER2 targeted or hormonal therapies, so we will commonly use a combination of surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. Visit www.Afinitor.com to learn more about advanced HR+/HER2- breast cancer.

Iconic Track Photographer, Bill Mochon, Passes Away Second Race Columbus Day named in His Honor by terry miller Local legendary horseracing photographer Bill Mochon passed away last week after a short battle with cancer. He truly was a fixture at Santa Anita and always had advice, a good joke or two and knew everyone. More importantly everyone at Santa Anita knew and loved him. Bill was, for all intents and purposes the Grand Ambassador of Horse Racing Photojournalists, especially at Santa Anita and Hollywood Park tracks. On Monday, friends, his three children and fellow photographers gathered at Santa Anita Park to honor his life and that amazing journey that led him to Santa Anita. Amy Gaskin had this to say about the man who taught her the ropes at the track: “Bill became like a second father to me. A kind and generous mentor….the type of person few people are lucky enough to know in a lifetime. He was always welcoming, inclusive, and helped me fit in when I was new at the track. He was always generous to share

his encyclopedic knowledge of both racing and photography. I will never forget his kindness and miss him dearly already. Bill was truly one of a kind….in all the best ways.”

Race Track in Arcadia, Mochon for years had been mentoring young and green photographers and helping us all understand horse racing photography’s dos and don’ts – i.e. like the first time I Bill Mochonmet Bill in the late Photo by Terry 1990s he advised Miller me it was perhaps R e c e n t l y, not good protocol April 2, the Press to stand in front Photographers’ of the automatic Association of camera at the Greater Los Angefinish line … true les bestowed the story. Hanging out with Mochon trackside was an experience every photographer needs, in fact it should be mandatory for any budding shutterbug. He’d make you laugh, and just usually make the day at the races unforgettable. Man, this chap had some amazing stories of not only famous horses, jockeys and owners/trainers but also of celebrities past and present. This illustrious shooter has a million yarns to tell … “And … some of them are even true …” Mochon once quipped . Mochon is well known by those regulars at the track for his uncompromising sense of humor and ever-willing mentoring nature. white and had not converted to the digital side of life as most of the rest of the press corps. You could see him everywhere with his trusty Nikon F5. He even developed and printed his own images in his elaborate darkroom in his North Hollywood home. It’s still magic to Mochon, “there’s nothing more beautiful than a black and white print on archival paper,” Mochon said with a wry smile. If you’ve even seen or held a print Mochon made, you’ll know exactly what I mean. Bill Mochon, a Providence, Rhode Island native, started his career as a photographer during 1960, in the Marine Corps at Quantico, Virginia, where he learned the basics by working in the photo laboratory darkroom mixing chemistry, loading film holders, developing film and making prints for the base newspaper. He also assisted the base’s official photographer on various assign-

ments, covering activities on the base from retirement ceremonies, visiting dignitaries, promotions and awards, and even football games. Upon his discharge, Bill came to California and started working with a commercial photographer in 1964, doing advertising and industrial and corporate reports. Two years later, he started in motion picture work at a lab where he developed films of the aerospace program which led to still and high speed camera work covering the rocket launches at Cape Kennedy, including Apollo XV and the Saturn V program. He married Joan in 1967 and his breakthrough into Thoroughbred racing came when the couple visited Santa Anita Park in 1973. Bill then started contributing to California Thoroughbred magazine by taking photos at the racetracks, breeding farms, etc. Retirement is not a word Mochon knew or even understood. Bill – You’ll be missed but your legacy will live on forever.

Mosaic Mural Behind Vromans Honors Filmakers, Actors and Dancers Who Got Their Start in Pasadena A stunning new art project conceived by Kenton Nelson will greet you next time you meander your way to the back parking lot at the popular Vroman’s Bookstore in Pasadena. The tiny Italian mosaic tiles (approximately 170,000) adorn the wall on the side of the new project by developer Ken McCormick directly behind the bookstore. The tiles were hand-set in Nelson’s studio and then the process of actually installing began in February. Nelson originally pitched the city of Pasadena over a year ago and as Nelson said, “Ken McCormick took me off the ledge several times …” referring to the joy of dealing with bureaucracy. A project such as this requires time and a lot of patience plus assistance from artists like Frank Gallagher, all Industrial Arts of San Marino, as well as two or three other talented team members ensuring the accuracy of the demanding. Nelson said he’s particularly excited about this project as people will be able to go up

and touch and feel the tiles. Most of the Mosaic tile installations have been too high for one to experience like this one. Kenton Nelson was born and raised in Los Angeles. He attended Long Beach State University and Otis Parsons Art Institute, and for the last 35 years has had his art studio in Pasadena, CA. He has been on the faculty of the Otis Parsons Art Institute in Los Angeles and the Academy of Art in San Francisco.

Nelson traces his interest in painting back to his great uncle, Roberto Montenegro, renowned Mexican muralist and Modernist. The style of Nelson’s paintings have their origins in American Scene painting, Regionalism, and the work of the WPA artists of the 1930s. Nelson paints figures, landscape, and architecture bathed in light. The objective in his paintings is to idealize the ordinary with the intention of engagement, using the

iconic symbols and styles of his lifetime in a theatrical style to make leading suggestions. Nelson’s paintings have been featured four times on the cover of The New Yorker magazine. Recent exhibitions of Nelson’s work have been enjoyed from Los Angeles to Stuttgart, Zurich and Salzburg. His oil paintings of figures, objects, and architecture have, as one critic said, “single handedly resurrected the sun drenched optimism of New Deal American Painting.”
