During the past few weeks, Monrovia city staff has been engaged in discussions with Tharaldson Hospitality Group (THG) regarding the proposed Marriott TownePlace Suites Hotel project planned for the southwest

corner of Myrtle Avenue and Huntington Drive.

The THG development team has made good progress of late in developing the details needed to submit a formal application for the proposed project, which will

be subject to Development Review Committee, Planning Commission, and City Council consideration.

At this point in time, the plans that have been developed for the hotel are still very conceptual in nature,

however, they are needed to begin the evaluation of potential environmental impacts pursuant to CEQA. Furthermore, an important element associated with the environmental review for the project is to hold a scoping meeting

C.A.R. Releases 2017 California Housing Market Forecast The Arcadia Association of REALTORS® reports that following a dip in home sales in 2016, California’s housing market will post a nominal increase in 2017, as supply shortages and affordability constraints hamper

market activity, according to the “2017 California Housing Market Forecast,” released recently by the California Association of REALTORS®.

The C.A.R. forecast sees a modest increase in existing home sales of 1.4 percent next

year to reach 413,000 units, up slightly from the projected 2016 sales figure of 407,300 homes sold. Sales in 2016 also will be virtually flat at 407,300 existing, single-family home sales, compared with the 408,800 pace of homes

sold in 2015.

“Next year, California’s housing market will be driven by tight housing supplies and the lowest housing affordability in six years,” said AAR President, Roy Blume. “The market will experience re-

gional differences, with more affordable areas, such as the Inland Empire and Central Valley, outperforming the urban coastal centers, where high home prices and a limited availability of homes on the market will hamper sales. As a

result, the Southern California and Central Valley regions will see moderate sales increases, while the San Francisco Bay Area will experience a decline as home buyers migrate to peripheral cities with more affordable options.”

Code Enforcement Partnership Outreach Week Next Oct. 10 During the past few weeks, the City of Monrovia staff has been working to develop strategies to better engage our Old Town business community in a joint effort to maintain and improve the unique appearance of our downtown core.

To that end, beginning the week of Oct. 10, the Neighborhood & Businesses Services Division staff will be working to perform an inventory of the all Old Town businesses with regard to the following matters: - Outdoor displays.

- Outdoors signs / banners.

- Outdoor dining locations.

- Signage.

- Construction activity.

During this review period, city personnel will reach out to all Old Town businesses to assess their operations for the business related activities noted above. The team will be working with businesses to ensure that all necessary city reviews and permits have been satisfied, and we will certainly be assisting any business owner who may require an update of their records.

In an effort to notify everyone about this upcoming work, we have prepared a letter that will be distributed to all Old Town business owners next week to advise everyone about this upcoming review.

Foothill Gold Lines Next Segment Is Completed The Foothill Gold Line Construction Authority board of directors recently approved the advanced conceptual engineering (ACE) draft documents. They are for the 12.3-mile, six-station Foothill Gold Line light rail project from Glendora to Montclair. Engineering for the project began in fall 2014, and took about 35 thousand man hours and $15 million to complete.

The approval is a milestone in the agency’s effort to ready the $1.2 billion light rail segment for construction as early as next year. The draft documents will now be distributed to the corridor cities, as well as key agencies, including Los Angeles County Metro, Metro Link, and the San Bernardino Associated Governments, for a 60-day review and comment period. Those comments will be put into a verification set for a final review next spring.

“We have taken lessons learned from the first two segments of the line and integrated them into the design for the Glendora to Montclair segment,” added Balian. “All stations will be able to be accessed from all sides, all will have center platforms for ease of use, we will be building four times the number of parking spaces than the last segment, and we will be installing fare gates at each station – to mention just a few of the improvements.”

Residual Measure R funding from the Pasadena to Azusa segment was used for the engineering work for the Glendora to Montclair extension. Construction of the new extension is estimated to cost $1.2 billion with the majority of the funding anticipated to come from Measure M, a half-cent sales tax measure being placed on the Nov. 2016 ballot by Los Angeles County Metro. If approved by voters in November, the Foothill Gold Line will be one of the first projects in the measure to break ground.

Public Survey Open Till Oct. 21 on Arroyo Seco Signs The public has until Oct. 21, 2016 to participate in a survey to share thoughts and provide input about proposed park signs for the Arroyo Seco as part of the City’s Department of Public Works, www. cityofpasadena.net/PublicWorks, goal to create a com-

prehensive master sign plan for the immensely popular recreational area.

The plan will cover all three main areas of Pasadena’s beautiful Arroyo Seco, including the Hahamongna Watershed Park (Upper Arroyo); the Central Arroyo Seco, and

the Lower Arroyo Seco. The master sign program will help define consistent logos and graphic styles, sign materials and locations. A variety of signs will be used to help identify facilities and features, highlight directions and trails, be informative or interpretive

and include regulations.

GROUND BREAKING FORECLOSURE RULING!

POLICE BLOTTERS MONROVIA Sept. 30 Sept. 30 at 12:46 a.m., an officer observed a subject in the 300 block of S. Myrtle that he knew had an outstanding warrant.

The subject was arrested, booked and later released with a citation to appear in court on the warrant.

September 30 at 4:43 p.m., a petty theft was reported in the 600 block of W. Huntington Drive.

The victim called to report someone had stolen hand tools from the bed of his truck. The investigation is continuing.

Oct. 1

Oct. 1 at 8:41 a.m., a residential burglary was reported in the 300 block of E. Lime. The home was involved in a fire earlier in the week and had been declared uninhabitable. The front door had been boarded up and someone removed one of the boards. The owner of the property was notified and responded to the location. Officers searched the home, but did not locate anyone inside. The owner did not find anything missing. The investigation is continuing.

Oct. 1 at 11:19 p.m., an officer was on patrol in the 1600 block of S. Myrtle when he observed a suspicious male adult subject.

The subject tossed something on the ground when he saw the officer. The officer detained the subject and requested assisting officers. When assistance arrived, the officer retrieved the items which had been tossed. He discovered the items were a baggie of methamphetamine and two used pipes for smok-

ing methamphetamine. The suspect was arrested and taken into custody.

Oct. 2 at 12:15 p.m., an officer was flagged down regarding a man down, possibly intoxicated. The subject was located and determined to be too intoxicated to care for his own safety. He was arrested for being drunk in public. He was also found to have an outstanding warrant for his arrest.

Around 12:58 p.m., an officer was flagged down by a witness stating she saw a suspect stealing mail in the area of Camino Real Avenue and Lovell Avenue. Assisting officers located the 29-yearold male from Duarte and discovered he was in possession of stolen mail and drug paraphernalia. He was arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking.

Oct. 2

Oct. 2 at 5:20 p.m., an officer saw a bicyclist commit a vehicle code violation and stopped the subject.

During the contact with the officer, the subject admitted to having drug paraphernalia in his possession. He was arrested and taken into custody.

ARCADIA

Sept. 26 At approximately 9:59 p.m., an officer responded to a residence in the 200 block of Longley Way regarding a suspicious circumstance.

An investigation revealed unknown suspect(s) entered the backyard of the home through a side gate, shattered the sliding glass door, and fled undetected.

No suspects were seen, no witnesses were located, and no loss was reported.

Shortly after 11:25 p.m., an officer responded to the 100 block of Genoa Street regarding a vehicle burglary report. The officer discovered an unknown suspect entered the unlocked vehicle and stole the victim’s wallet, cellphone, and vehicle registration.

Just after 11:50 p.m., an officer responded to Vons, 745 West Naomi Avenue, regarding a petty theft report.

Surveillance footage revealed the three female suspects concealed numerous containers of baby formula before exiting the store, failing to make payment.

The three suspects are described as black females, all between the ages of 25 to 35-years-old. They fled in a beige or gold Nissan Sentra.

The investigation is ongoing.

Sept. 28

Shortly after 6:33 p.m., an officer responded to Sephora, 400 South Baldwin Avenue, regarding a petty theft report. Surveillance footage revealed the suspect concealed numerous items in a shopping bag before exiting the store, failing to make payment. The suspect was also in possession of two fraudulent ID’s. The 16-year-old female from Monterey Park was cited and released to her adult sister.

At about 11:09 p.m., an officer responded to LA Fitness, 1325 South Baldwin Avenue, regarding a bike theft report. The officer de-

termined an unknown suspect stole the victim’s locked bicycle from the bike rack. No suspects were seen and no witnesses were located.

Sept. 29

At approximately 2:07 a.m., an officer conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle in the area of Baldwin Avenue and Naomi Avenue for having expired registration. Upon contacting the driver, the officer detected a strong odor of alcohol emitting from the vehicle.

The driver refused Field Sobriety Tests. The 33-year-old male from Rosemead was arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking.

Around 9:40 a.m., an officer was flagged down by a witness in regards to an indecent exposure incident that occurred near the intersection of Sixth Avenue and Camino Grove Avenue. An investigation revealed an unidentified male suspect was masturbating inside his vehicle while conversing with the victim. An area check did not locate him.

The suspect is described as a Hispanic male, 30 to 35-years-old, thin build, with a mustache, driving an older model, red pickup truck. The investigation is ongoing.

Just after 9:58 a.m., officers responded to the area of Santa Anita Avenue and Colorado Boulevard regarding an Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) hit on a stolen vehicle. Officers located the vehicle and a records check revealed the driver, a 20-yearold female from Pasadena, had never been issued a driver’s license and the passenger, a 20-year-old female from Azusa, had an outstanding misdemeanor warrant. Both occupants were arrested. The investigation continued and revealed a third male suspect

stole the vehicle and let the females borrow it. The female occupants were unaware of the vehicle being stolen. The male suspect is outstanding at the time of this report.

Sept. 30

At about 12:11 p.m., an officer responded to an apartment complex in the 800 block of West Huntington Drive regarding a commercial burglary report. The officer determined unknown suspect(s) pried open the change compartments to the washing machines and stole an unknown amount of change. A witness reported seeing a “Wash” company vehicle at the location during the time of the crime. The investigation is ongoing.

Oct. 1

Shortly after 11:13 p.m., an officer responded to Benihana, 400 South Baldwin Avenue, regarding a battery report. An investigation revealed a physical altercation occurred between three suspects and the victim, resulting in the suspects punching and hitting the victim. All three suspects fled before officers arrived. The victim declined medical attention.

The suspects are described as two black males and one white male, all between the ages of 30 and 35-years-old. They fled in a white Chevrolet Tahoe. The investigation is ongoing.

PASADENA

Sept. 30 Sept. 30, at about 2:20 a.m. Pasadena Police received a call in the 200 block of East Orange Grove Blvd regarding a domestic disturbance with a suspect at the location, armed

with a knife. Officers responded to the scene and encountered an African American male adult armed with a knife and a fire extinguisher.

The suspect did not comply with the officer’s orders and he attempted to re-enter an occupied apartment at the location. Pasadena officer deployed a Taser in an effort to disarm the suspect and a fight ensured. The suspect was ultimately subdued by police.

After restraining the suspect, the officers observed him not breathing at which time CPR and life saving measure were implemented. The officers continued CPR until the arrival of Pasadena Fire Paramedics who continue the render aid. Despite the efforts of officers and paramedics the suspect died at the scene.

As is the protocol of Pasadena Police Department, the Los Angeles County Sherriff’s Homicide Bureau was asked to respond along with the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office Investigators.

Despite earlier reports, this was not an Officer Involved Shooting, a firearm was not involved.

The loss of any life is always tragic and should be fully investigated. In that regard you have my commitment that all aspects of this incident will be reviewed.

The Pasadena Police Department is cooperating fully with the Sheriff’s investigators and the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, who will conduct will independent investigations. The Pasadena Police Department will also conduct an independent Administrative Investigation to examine policies, tactics, training, equipment, and the officer’s state of mind. The criminal and administrative investigations will take some time before all the facts are known. I respectfully request calm in our community and as difficult as it can be wait until the fact are examined.

Letter to Editor: Letter Carrier Voices Serious Concerns I am a letter carrier for a San Gabriel Valley city that your paper serves. I would like to remain anonymous out of fear of retaliation from my management.

You did a story a year or so ago about the backlash given to the Arcadia Post Office after its Postmaster decided to move their boxes on Santa Clara Avenue, even though there was absolutely nothing wrong with where they were located originally.

Within a week or two after your story was published, the boxes were moved back to its original place, proving that the power of a story can make a difference.

The letter follows: Dear Editor: For the third time this year alone, the starting times for your US Postal Letter Carrier has once again been moved 30 minutes later. It has gone from a 7a.m. starting time to a 7:30 a.m. starting time to an 8 a.m. starting time to a now 8:30 a.m. starting time (for most

offices, with more to follow).

The Santa Clarita District (which many of the San Gabriel Valley Post Offices are part of) is being run by a District Manager who has done a completely horrific job in getting all mail out of its processing center "ON TIME" and into the many Post Offices throughout the San Gabriel Valley "ON TIME." This manager has decided that the best solution to this problem is to make its couple of thousands of Letter Carriers throughout the San Gabriel Valley come in at a later starting time … again and again and again.

So what does this latest new starting time mean to you, the customer?

For the business customer, this means another 30 minutes of waiting for those always important pieces of mail that your business heavily relies on first thing in the morning.

There was once a time when the Post Office made it mandatory for every business customer to have their mail in their hands by 1pm at the latest. Gone now are those days of "Customer Satisfaction."

As for the residential customer, this also means another 30 minutes of waiting for important pieces of mail. In addition, later starting times this winter will mean that carriers will be spending more time making their deliveries in the dark (something that was extremely rare just a few years ago but has now become an everyday reality every winter). What residential customers need to be aware of is that if a letter carrier becomes a victim of a serious injury due to a slip, trip, or fall while delivering on your property in the dark, that letter carrier will have the right to sue the owner of the property. With deliveries late in the dark, this also means your chances of getting those important checks deposited at your bank on time are now "slim to none".

What can you do to fix this "late delivery" problem?

Years ago when residents of the 3311 district complained about their mail arriving as late as 10 p.m., then-Congressman Henry Waxman took care of the problem by going after the Post Office. Within days, Letter Carriers throughout LA County were mandated to start as early as 7 a.m.

According to a Postal Union Newsletter that brought this story up, the Post Office blamed the late deliveries on Hurricane Katrina … yes, Hurricane Katrina!!!

(9/28/16 Issue) I listened to the last city council meeting and learned that a group of two dozen neighbors on Fifth Avenue are opposed to the project.

They want to see a new home built but one that is a bit smaller so it fits in better.

They appealed to the builder, the owner, the planning commission and the city council, but their concerns fell on deaf ears. A lawsuit seems to be their only recourse to get a response. It could have been avoided and so I hope they are successful.

A new large home will provide plenty of profit to the developer, satisfaction to the owner, and peace of mind to the neighbors. It ought to be a win-win situation for all.

However, this is Arcadia where the ethos is “I got mine, so screw you.”

That ethos is shouted

with an exclamation point in the vitriol and public shaming dished out regularly by Councilman Roger Chandler.

What is the purpose of publicly berating citizens who exercise their right to speak in opposition on a civil matter?

Mr. Chandler is a bully who cares only for greed and profits and not his legacy of devastation to Arcadia’s neighborhoods.

Lythgoe Family Pantos’ Hold Auditions for Upcoming Play ‘A Cinderella Christmas’

his past weekend Kristopher and Becky Lythgoe held auditions for the fifth season of their American Panto ‘A Cinderella Christmas.’ Over 100 kids ranging from ages 5-13 years old came out to audition for a role in the play.

‘A Cinderella Christmas’ is a Lythgoe Family Panto Production. A “Panto” is another word for a play, but is its own form of musical theatre where you can break the fourth wall and interact with the audience and sing along to modern day songs - as opposed to traditional songs you would know from watching the old movies or other plays. This Panto will feature comedy, magic, professional dancers, and contemporary music from Taylor Swift to The Bee Gees.

I got a chance to sit down with Kris and Becky Lythgoe to ask them how it is producing a family play.

Kris Lythgoe stated that “The pros are that you get to introduce theatre to kids, it originated in Britain so bringing it to America is fun, the cons is that it’s a lot of hard work, and just making sure everything is set.”

Becky Lythgoe said that the audience can expect “something you can bring multi generations of people to … be able to sing-a-long from your seat, have a lot of heart-felt moments, and experience a lot of really great talent. Expect magic and Family fun.”

Choreographer Mario Mosley has been choreographing for more than 20 years. He has worked in the film Dream Girls dancing alongside Beyoncé, Brittney Spears, Ariana Grande and Justin Timberlake.

Mosley was the youth supervising choreographer

who handled all the children’s auditions, and is the casting director for all auditions taking place throughout Southern California.

Mosley said he loves choreographing kids, it’s so much fun, laughter, talent and raw energy that he loves to be around.

Mosley shared that some good things about choreographing kids is that there is not a lot of ego going on, it’s always a good time, kids help each other - whereas when they are older you don’t get a lot of help from peers, on the other hand there’s not much cons because I love it but it is harder to get them under control (laughs), you have to be a little more demanding but overall it is such a joy.” Mosely also stated, “We want the audience to come have a good time, to leave all your problems at home for a couple hours and just come enjoy great talent, and great music.”

‘A Cinderella Christmas’ will have a gala opening night

at The Pasadena Playhouse on Dec. 8, 2016 and will run all the way until Jan. 8, 2017.

On opening night, the show will start promptly at 7:30 p.m.

The Pasadena Playhouse is located at 39 S. El Molino Ave, Pasadena CA 91101.

Performance Schedule is Tuesdays – Fridays at 7:30 p.m.; Saturdays at 12 p.m., 4 p.m., and 7:30 p.m.; and Sundays 12 p.m. and 4 p.m.

Special Matinees are Dec. 23, 26, 28, 30, and Jan. 4 and 5 – all starting at 3 p.m.

2016 Monrovia Fire Prevention Week Oct. 10 Check Your Smoke Detectors This year Monrovia Fire & Rescue will be participating in Fire Prevention Week. This year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign, “Don’t Wait – Check the Date! Replace Smoke Alarms Every 10 Years,” represents the final year of a threeyear effort to educate the public about basic, but essential elements of smoke alarm

safety. As part of the campaign, Monrovia firefighters will be visiting Monrovia Unified School District (MUSD) 4th grade classrooms during the week of Oct. 10.

The teaching point will be centered on the importance of checking to ensure smoke detectors are not expired. To conclude the week, Monrovia

Fire & Rescue will be opening its doors at Station 101, located at 141 E. Lemon Ave. to the general public between the hours of 12 p.m. – 3 p.m. In order to gain access to Station 101, a simple quiz regarding smoke alarms will need to be completed and/or the smoke alarm challenge sheet will need to be submitted.

Old Town open! Joey Kouchakian of Diplomat fame (and now Salad Bistro fame) has applied for a Conditional Use Permit to serve beer and wine at Salad Bistro (504 S. Myrtle), and there will be a public hearing at City Hall on October 12th at 7:30 p.m. I think this is a great idea and I will try to be there to support him.

As most of you know, our Old Town is comprised of several different kinds of businesses, not all of them traditional retail or restaurants. Last week I was writing about the 500 block of Myrtle, and I didn’t have enough space to finish what I wanted to say… (The paper gives me 630 words and you don’t know how hard it is to keep this column to 630 words!) So, let’s talk about Teles Properties at 517 S. Myrtle, a firm that specializes in luxury homes and historic preservation, but also works with this less luxurious homes (like my brother’s, which I sold through Teles). Teles has a large standing table at the front as you enter where you can browse through brochures or just ask what’s happening in Old Town. And, just north of Teles Properties is Opus

Bank at 515 S. Myrtle. Opus has to be the friendliest bank in the San Gabriel Valley – I’ve had their employees (Shawn Spencer, for one!) pop out of the front door as I walk by just to say “Hi.” I love Old Town.

Halloween is coming, and that means several tons of candy will be distributed throughout Old Town on Monday, October 31st from 3 – 6 p.m. The City and the merchants have teamed to present the “Annual Old Town Trick-or-Treat & Halloween Bash with events in Library Park that coincide with the candy give-away by the merchants. But Halloween is only the beginning of our 4th Quarter happiness: November 5th has been proclaimed “Celebrate Tina & Cleo Day” with free kid’s crafts, face-painting and balloons and music in the 400 block (east side) of Myrtle.

(For those of you who don’t know, Tina is our Old Town friend who lost who 21 yearold kitty, Cleo, last year, and we promised her a celebration!) And then comes Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, the Holiday Parade with the man in red – and New Year’s Eve on Myrtle!

ncourage your children to keep their focus on their schoolwork.

By this time, they should have figured out what extracurricular activities they are interested in pursuing and what sports they want to participate in. Give them guidance as they navigate this new phase in their school life, and support the choices they make.

SOPHOMORE

Depending on your children’s course choices and load, there could be standardized testing required of them. Your children should be taking AP and SAT II exams following completion of the course so they need to retain the knowledge they gained in class. The best preparation for both AP and SAT II exams is for your children to make sure they understand the subject matter and do well in all tests the teachers give in class. If there is something they didn’t understand, they should right away speak to the teacher to ask for clarification or, possibly, find a tutor for additional help. The results of these standardized exams are required for college applications.

JUNIORS Your children should be aware that junior year is the last complete year of high school performance that college admissions officers will see. They have to put more effort at doing well and getting good marks.

They should register for and take the PSAT, which is also the qualifying exams for the National Merit Scholarship. It is also a good time for your children to meet with their school counselor to make sure they are taking all the courses they need to graduate and apply to college.

Your children should also be keeping up with their extra-curricular and sports activities. College admissions officers look at several components as they try to assemble an incoming class made up of the best candidates to add to their student body.

This is an excellent opportunity for you to see what the different colleges and universities are offering. Your children will get to meet and speak to admissions officers – they are usually the same people who will be reviewing your children’s application, reading your children’s essay, and sitting around the table, making their case for your children during the allimportant decision-making rounds. Your responsibilities as parents are limited to offering encouragement, guidance and moral support as your children go through this stressful time. But while you need to let your children manage this process, you should also express your concerns and expectations. Communicate with your child, the counselors and the teachers when you have inquiries.

Be there for your children but learn when to get out of their way. Never try to communicate with the college admission officers as it is the surest way to sabotage your children’s chances for admission. Every year, 1.3 million women across the globe are diagnosed with breast cancer. Breast cancer awareness is high, but the primary focus of research is on early detection and treatment rather than prevention. Detection and treatment are undeniably important, but many feel prevention deserves more than the 2 percent of funding it currently receives, especially given the promising preventative strategies already out there.

A Stroke of Genius

here was a time in my life when I actually enjoyed cleaning house. I don't remember when it was. As of now I have to say that cleaning house is not one of my favorite pastimes.

Last night a cricket got into my house. My female cat, Fluffy, spotted him and the chase was on. To escape he crawled under the washing machine. To grab him, Fluffy extended a front leg to maximum length and dragged it under the washer from every possible angle.

She never got the cricket but every time she pulled her ex-

tended leg back, along with it came a big dust ball.

I don't know whether to kill the cricket, kill the cat or just move to a new house.

I don't like cleaning but I do like my house to be clean. I figure it is now clean under the washer but I can't believe that was the only spot to have accumulated dust balls. The same condition probably exists under the refrigerator, under the stove and God knows where else. I dread the thoughts of getting out the big old tank style sweeper with the long skinny attachment for sucking dust from under heavy, nearly immovable objects.

Wait. As I write this I've

had a stroke of genius. What if I get some more crickets? There are plenty more where that one came from.

They are probably planning to move in anyway. Their ancestors did last year.

I'll just put a cricket under each heavy thing then call Fluffy and her brothers into action. Like in the days of old when our fingers did the walking through the yellow pages, their extended legs can do the swiping through the house. That way I don't have to get out the tank sweeper, I don't have to move and, I don't have to kill the cricket. Of course, I would never, ever consider killing a cat.

By Christian Romo The Mustangs were only 31 yards away from a potential upset, but a defensive stop with fewer than 30 seconds left to play kept Arcadia’s undefeated season alive.

Behind two rushing touchdowns from sophomore Jahlique Stephens (#22), the Arcadia Apaches (5-0) defeated the Muir Mustangs (2-3) 19-12 on homecoming night at Arcadia High. The Apaches started sophomore quarterback Frankie Contreras (#12) in place of injured starter Max Davila, forcing the offense to rely on Stephens to run through Muir’s stout run defense. He was up to the challenge.

“My rushing touchdowns were basically off my linemen doing their job and my quarterback making the right reads,” said Stephens.

He put the Apaches up 13-12 in the third quarter with a 12yard touchdown diving to the right pylon, and he added another 12-yard touchdown run up the middle in the fourth with six minutes left to play. It turned out to be the deciding play in tight-scoring game.

Muir scored first early in

the second quarter on a 21yard draw from quarterback Darren Meyers (#32) after an interception from senior Elijah Blades (#4) set them up on their own 43 yard line.

The Apaches responded later in the quarter, with sophomore Rolandiss Whitener (#4) running a fumbled punt return 40 yards for Arcadia’s only score of the half. It was a touchdown the Apaches needed, as they struggled moving the ball throughout the first half.

“There are obviously a lot of things we need to clean up,” said Arcadia coach Andrew Policky, who noted that his team moved the ball better when a halftime adjustment saw Contreras throwing more screens to his receivers.

“Frankie has taken a lot of reps for us …it’s nice when you don’t have your quarterback, and your backup quarterback can come in in a big game, and we’re still able to get a win.”

Though Contreras played well, Meyers played even better under center for the Mustangs. He emerged as Muir’s featured runner, going for over 100 yards on the ground and setting up a

game late in the fourth, but he returned for his team’s final drive, getting the Mustangs within reach of tying the game. “The kid plays hard, practices hard, studies hard,” said Muir coach Antyone Sims of his quarterback. “He’s just a hard worker.”

Though now 5-0 for the first time since 2007, the Apaches have kept every game close, relying on run defense, mid-game offensive adjustments, and momentumshifting plays to keep them undefeated. But Whitener, who was responsible for this
