Electrical Fire Causes Evacuations From Huntington Drive Business Center Wednesday Photos by Terry Miller Monrovia Fire, assisted

by Arcadia and Pasadena, responded to an electrical fire in the complex at Huntington Drive Business Center, at Huntington and Ivy, Wednesday morning.

Engines from area cities set up large fans to eradicate the smoke from the building.

Scores of employees from several different companies were evacuated due to the smoke, but no one was

injured in the incident.

While waiting for the all clear signal, many employees took an early lunch until the fire department gave to okay to go back inside the building, hours later. In most fires, the smoke damage is often worse than the fire itself and can cause serious health concerns, Cause of the fire is under investigation, no other details were immediately available.

Local Congresswoman Votes Against Guantanamo Bay Restrictions

The House of Representatives recently voted to pass H.R. 5351, a bill to bar the transfer of detainees from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

The bill would, for the first time, prevent all transfers of detainees out of Guantanamo Bay, even to stand trial in a federal court.

“We wish to thank the FAA, particularly the Los Angeles and Denver offices, for their continued support of Global SuperTanker, and their diligence in ensuring all legal and safety requirements have been met. The air safety regime of the US is second to none and we are honored to have worked closely with the FAA,” said Jim Wheeler, president and CEO of Global SuperTanker.

“We are proud that our aircraft, the world’s largest, fastest, and longest-range aerial firefighting asset, has met the agency’s rigorous safety standards, and we look forward to working with the FAA in the years to come.”

“Global SuperTanker has completed the requested USFS testing and we are now awaiting the outcome from the Interagency Air Tanker Board (IAB),” said Harry Toll, managing partner of Alterna Capital Partners LLC, whose portfolio company, Cyterna Air LLC, owns Global SuperTanker. “This is a busy time of year for the IAB members,

Global SuperTanker’s converted B747-400 had previously been issued the FAA’s Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) authorizing the installation and utilization of its pressurized tanks.

The FAA has now issued

Federal Aviation Regulation (FAR) certificate 137, which allows Global SuperTanker to fly in revenue service. The Spirit of John Muir is now fully certified to operate as an aerial platform for wildland and marine firefighting, as well as oil spill remediation.

The Spirit of John Muir is the world’s youngest Very Large Air Tanker (VLAT) and

has almost twice the capacity of the next biggest aerial tanker. The John Muir is capable of delivering single or multiple drops of nearly 20,000 gallons of water or fire retardant, either of which can be released at variable rates from its pressurized tanks, producing a tailored response to the firefighting need.

Global SuperTanker is currently working with the US Forest Service to achieve its final USFS certifications.

While the aircraft awaits USFS approval, it is currently available not only to US states, counties, and cities, but also to overseas entities.

Jim Wheeler said, “Discussions with fire-related agencies around the world will intensify over the next few weeks, as will our focus on previously discussed callwhen-needed contracts.”

Flying at nearly 600 miles per hour, the Spirit of John Muir can leave its home base in Colorado Springs and reach any mission in the western United States in less than three hours. In addition, the range and speed of the B747-400 permits it the ability to arrive anywhere in the world in 20 hours with a single fuel stop.

Tournament of Roses® Announces 2017 Float Judges The Tournament of Roses has selected Phil Rulloda, Ronnie Siegel, and Carol Togneri to be float judges for the 128th Rose Parade.

The judges will grant awards based on many criteria, including creative design, floral craftsmanship, artistic merit, computerized animation, thematic interpretation,

floral and color presentation, and dramatic impact.

The Tournament of Roses will announce the awardwinning floats the morning of Jan. 2, 2017, at the Tournament House.

“Our Rose Parade float judges bring uniquely diverse skills to the judging process that greatly will assist them

in the challenging task of judging each of the parade’s incredible botanic masterpieces,” said Brad Ratliff.

“Each float is designed, built, and decorated by individuals who leave a small, but valuably personal, piece of himself and herself woven into the tapestry of each floral presentation. Each mem-

ber of our esteemed panel of judges understands the theme, ‘Echoes of Success,’ and is distinctly qualified to understand the role that each person plays in creating these beautiful works of art.”

Togneri credits her big Italian family as her “Echoes of Success,” for inspiring her to love art history, culture,

and museums.

She received her bachelor’s and master’s in art history from CSULA and wrote her thesis on “Giovanni Battista Crespi and the Patronage of Cardinal Federico Borromeo in Milan.” Togneri was born and raised in the San Gabriel Valley and lives in Pasadena.

POLICE BLOTTERS ARCADIA Sept. 14 Shortly after 6:54 a.m., officers responded to a residence in the 00 block of East Christina Street regarding a theft report. Officers determined an unknown suspect stole two backpacks from the trunk of an unlocked car. The investigation is ongoing.

Sept. 15

At approximately 10:28 a.m., an officer responded to a residence in the 9900 block of Garibaldi Avenue regarding a domestic dispute. An investigation revealed a physical altercation occurred between a mother and daughter resulting in the mother punching her 16-year-old daughter. Then the suspect punched her 67-year-old mother. The 34-year-old female from Temple City fled the location before officers arrived.

The investigation is ongoing and the suspect is outstanding at the time of this report.

Around 2:21 p.m., an officer responded to 7-Eleven, 1003 S. Baldwin Ave., regarding a possible theft report. The officer discovered the suspect attempted to pay for two packs of cigarettes with a counterfeit $50 bill. When the clerk told her it was fraudulent, she took it back, paid for the items with a credit card, and quickly fled on foot. The suspect is described as a white female, approximately 65-yearsold, with blonde hair. The investigation is ongoing.

Sept. 16

At about 6:26 a.m., an officer responded to a residence in the 400 block

of Cortez Road regarding a vehicle burglary report.

The officer determined an unknown suspect stole the victim’s designer sunglasses and cash from his unlocked vehicle sometime during the previous night.

No suspects were seen and no witnesses were located.

Just before 10:06 p.m., an officer responded to a residence in the 2200 block of Lenta Lane regarding an attempted burglary report.

An investigation revealed unknown suspect(s) entered the backyard, cut the window screen, and used a window punch to break into the residence. The suspects were unsuccessful and fled the location undetected. No witnesses were located.

Sept. 17

Shortly after 5:36 a.m., an officer responded to Georgio Realty, 159 E. Huntington Drive, regarding an audible alarm. The officer discovered unknown suspect(s) pried open the front door and were scared away as the business was not ransacked and no items were missing. The suspect(s) were gone by the time officers arrived.

The investigation is ongoing.

At approximately 10:36 p.m., an officer responded to a residence in the 200 block of South Baldwin Avenue regarding a domestic dispute. An investigation revealed a physical altercation occurred between a husband and wife, resulting in the husband hitting and pushing the victim causing her to fall and scratch herself. The 39-year-old male from Arcadia fled the scene prior to the officers’ arrival.

The investigation is ongo-

ing and the suspect is outstanding at the time of this report.

SIERRA MADRE Sept. 12

Sierra Madre Police Department (SMPD) officers were dispatched at about 8:26 a.m. to the 00 block of Suffolk Avenue, regarding a theft from a vehicle report. Unknown suspect(s) entered victim’s apartment complex parking lot sometime between Sept. 11 at 10 p.m. and Sept. 12 at 6:10 a.m. and ransacked the victim’s vehicle, taking victim’s property. Case was forwarded to detectives.

At 8:26 a.m., officers responded to the 00 block of Suffolk Avenue, regarding a stolen vehicle report.

The victim stated that his car was parked the night before at about 6 p.m. in the rear carport. When he returned on Sept. 12, he discovered it missing. The car is described as a 2014 gray Honda Civic, containing two car seats and miscellaneous baby items. The victim’s truck was also ransacked at the same location. SMPD dispatch entered the auto into the stolen vehicle database and notified surrounding agencies.

At 9:10 a.m., officers dispatched to the station lobby for an auto burglary report. The victim’s car was parked in the driveway in the 100 block of Esperanza Avenue on Sept. 11, at about 1 p.m. The victim returned to the car on Sept. 12, at about 8:45 a.m., to discover the passenger door open.

Unknown suspect(s) stole personal property. Case was forwarded to detectives.

At 5:30 p.m., officers and a supervisor were dispatched to a domestic dispute in the 400 block of Fairview Avenue.

An argument between two males escalated into an assault charge after one male struck the other with a bamboo stick.

A male was arrested and transported to Pasadena PD’s jail.

An emergency protective order was obtained keeping the aggressor from returning to the house. Case referred to the DA’s office for filing considerations.

At 12:19 a.m., officers were dispatched to the 2600 block of South Peck on the report of a possible drunk driver.

As officers were responding to the location, they saw the driver heading north without any headlights. The officers attempted to stop the vehicle for the violation, but the vehicle failed to yield and continued driving. The driver eventually yielded at a dead end street by his residence. The driver was found to be driving under the influence and was arrested.

At about 9:17 a.m. officers responded to the 200 block of East Sierra Madre Boulevard for an auto burglary. The victim said that she last saw her property the night before at about 11 p.m. When she returned on Sept. 17, at about 5:50 a.m., she found her trunk and passenger door open. An unknown suspect(s) rummaged through her vehicle and allegedly stole property while the vehicle was parked in the carport. Victim had several white bags with recently purchased household items that were taken. Detectives are following up on a witness account of possible suspect(s).

At 8:57 p.m., a business in the 100 block of West Foothill called police to report a shoplifter that fled the location. Officers responded and conducted an area search. The suspect was located and detained in the 200 block of West Palm.

The suspect also had a warrant for his arrest. He was arrested for both the burglary and the warrant.

Sept. 17

MONROVIA

Sept. 15 At 11:10 p.m., an officer was on patrol when he observed a vehicle driving north on California crash into a pole as it crossed the train tracks.

Both the driver and passenger exited the vehicle and fled east, along the train tracks. Officers detained both suspects at Shamrock and the tracks. The driver was found to be intoxicated and a weapon was found in the vehicle. Both suspects were arrested.

At 2:58 p.m., a theft of mail was reported in the 1800 block of South Fifth Avenue.

The victim reported that he was notified a package was delivered by UPS to his residence. When he arrived home, the package was gone. The investigation is continuing.

Sept. 17

At 1:30 a.m., officers were on patrol in the downtown area. One of the officers heard glass breaking and saw an intoxicated female who looked like she was talking on her phone. She had her hand up to her ear, but upon closer inspection, the officer saw she had a credit card to her ear and her cell phone was on the ground. She then threw an object at the glass window of a business, causing damage.

She was arrested and taken into custody for being drunk in public and vandalism.

At 3:59 a.m., an officer attempted to stop a vehicle for a vehicle code violation in the area of California and Cypress. The vehicle failed to yield, accelerating through numerous red lights and stop signs, before stopping his vehicle and fleeing on foot.

The suspect was identified by the pursuing officer and the vehicle was impounded.

A wanted person’s entry was made into the law enforcement system for his arrest.

At 8:14 p.m., the suspect called police asking how he could get his car out of impound, claiming that his vehicle was stolen. He came to the police department and filed a grand theft auto report, claiming an unknown person had stolen his vehicle. After signing the CHP form reporting his vehicle was stolen, the suspect was arrested for making a false report and for evading a police officer.

Sept. 19

At 1:35 a.m., officers were dispatched to the 200 block of Kruse regarding three subjects painting graffiti on a vehicle. The officers arrived and detained three subjects, two males and a female. One of the male subjects was a minor. The male adult suspect who painted the graffiti on the vehicle was identified by the victim.

A can of spray paint was recovered and the suspect had fresh paint on his fingers.

The suspect was arrested and charged with vandalism, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and giving false information. It was later determined through fingerprints that the suspect gave a false name to police and he also had an outstanding warrant for his arrest.

This year’s event is set for Friday, Oct. 9, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tickets are only $50,

This is a chance to taste not only the culinary delights from Old Town itself, but every year, interesting other vendors are on the street, sharing their offerings.

“Going into the test, I wasn't sure what to expect, because the class of 2017 was the first to take the redesigned PSAT/NMSQT,” said Arcadia High senior Simone Chu. “I'm really glad that the education I've received in AUSD prepared me for anything and everything that might come my way ­and I'm ecstatic to have been named a National Merit Semifinalist!

The long wait for results was nerve-racking, but finding out that the work I put in had paid off made it all worthwhile.”

Approximately 1.6 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools entered the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2015 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/ NMSQT), which served as an initial screening of applicants. Of the 16,000 semifinalists named, about 15,000 are expected to advance to the finalist level.

The same trend occurred in 2013 with the 22 Arcadia High students who were recognized.

“This is always such an exciting and distinguished honor for our students,” said Dr. David Vannasdall, superintendent of Arcadia Unified School District (AUSD). “It also speaks volumes to the quality of teachers we are fortunate to have throughout the entire district.”

To become a finalist, the semifinalists and their high schools must submit a

detailed scholarship application, in which they provide information about the semifinalist’s academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, honors and awards received, and satisfy other academic criteria.

More than half of the finalists will be awarded a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar distinction. In February the finalists will be notified and scholarships will be awarded starting in April and concluding in July.

LA County District Teachers of the Year. The top 16 are comprised of 14 women and two men. They represent the profession’s elite from a total pool of about 75,000 teachers countywide.

One of those selected was Arcadia Unified School District’s Renee Costarella.

She teaches at Camino Grove Elementary School, specializing as a coach in

reading intervention.

Costarella employs numerous teaching resources to help her students overcome educational barriers, particularly with reading and writing.

Google Type, for instance, allowed one of her handwriting-challenged fourth graders to access his thoughts, make them legible, and now show proficiency in writing.

on Collins, founder of Family Affair Music, has a joke that he enjoys telling customers who come into his store: “you can either buy a CD or a record and listen to music, or you can buy an instrument and play it yourself.”

Located in Old Town Monrovia since 1972, Family Affair Music is truly a hybrid business - part record/music store, part instrument shop.

Thanks to this versatility, Family Affair attracts a wide variety of customers: students, musicians, serious collectors, and last, but certainly not least, everyday fans simply searching for a good listen.

No matter how you like your music, whether it be via vinyl, CD, cassette, or your own hands, Collins’ store will certainly have something to please your ears. Family Affair even has some items for those of you who held on to your eight-track, four-track, and reel-to-reel players – as their motto goes, “we specialize in ‘Oldies,’ but ‘Goodies.’”

Although his business has enjoyed more than four decades under the same Monrovia roof, Collins’ relationship with the city goes back even further. A “Wildcat” through and through, Collins was born and raised in Monrovia and attended Monrovia High School.

Despite wielding a musical background himself (Collins was a member of the Monrovia High School choir, sang in a band as a hobby, and is currently teaching himself

how to play the guitar), he accredits favorable business circumstances at the time for allowing him to start Family Affair Music. Originally the home for Johnson’s Music, Family Affair’s current location went for sale during a period in time when malls were beginning to come around, a phenomenon which, in turn, drained business activity from the downtown Monrovia (aka Old Town) area. Collins jumped on the opportunity to purchase the space and, once he settled on a name (inspired

by Sly and the Family Stone’s 1971 hit “Family Affair”), he opened up shop.

Although much has changed in the music industry since then, as a result of the onset of the digital age and popular musical tastes that seemingly change weekto-week, Family Affair Music and its owner still provide the friendly customer service and years of wisdom absent from iTunes or any other website.

That said, Collins has recognized a recent change in the retail experience - just as records spin around and around, so too are trends cyclical, “If you would have told me, at that time, that people could download music over the phone, I would have told you that you’re crazy. It’s funny though, people are starting to come back and physically shop in stores again. They walk around, just want to see what’s there and sometimes something they’ve never thought about pops up they’ll want it, and they’ll buy it,” says Collins.

Community partnerships with The Huntington Library, The Boone Foundation, Monrovia Schools Foundation, Hutto Patterson Foundation, Arts For All, Pasadena Showcase House, Fellowship Monrovia, the Monrovia Duarte Black Alumni Association, as

well as individual donors from the community have helped to make this growth possible.

Through the TEAL program, which offers professional development in arts integration throughout the K-5 curriculum, our students have been given the opportunity to work with world-class teachers from MUSD. Monrovia students

have also been given the opportunity to work with Shanon Fitzpatrick, artist in residence; Susan Egan, Broadway star; and teaching artists from CAL ARTS, A Noise Within, Diavolo Dance, and California Dance Institute, In addition to the outstanding support from Superintendent Dr. Katherine Thorossian and the board of education, the City of Monrovia

The Coleman Chamber Concerts were started in 1904

by Alice Coleman, a gifted pianist living in Pasadena.

By May S. Ruiz In an area like the Pasadena market, which is replete with outstanding schools, setting itself apart from all the rest is a remarkable feat.

However, Clairbourn School, a junior pre-K to eighth grade independent learning institution in San Gabriel, succeeds in standing out.

Headmaster, Dr. Robert Nafie, leads dedicated administrators and teachers who work tirelessly to build a strong instructional program balanced with meaningful elective courses, extra-curricular activities, and afterschool classes. He ensures that each student gets the best education, using all the tools available, in a caring and nurturing atmosphere.

That children need to be children was uppermost in the mind of former head of school, Gloria Stahmer, when in 2009 she asked then fifth grade teacher, Jonathan Barner, “Don’t you think our kids need to be out in the dirt, gardening … or something?”

“As an avid backyard gardener, I thought it was a fabulous idea,” Barner relates.

“Thus began our vegetable propagation – we bought three pre-made plant beds, which our maintenance crew installed and integrated with an irrigation system in the fourth and fifth grade area.

They also made beds along the fence in the parking lot.”

Barner expounds, “The project was a collaboration with another fifth grade teacher, Laurie Corwin, who taught social studies. I suggested we recreate the American colonial period and grow corn, pumpkin, and cotton – all the crops that were important to the survival of early colonists and the Native Americans.

Through this colonial garde, students learned how early settlers struggled in the new world.”

was originally put in November 2001 by a previous science teacher, had not been used much after he left. It was upgraded in 2013 and teachers used it as a learning center,” Barner adds.

When Barner retired in 2015, Nancy Ward, director of communications, took up the mantle. An enthusiastic gardener like him, she knew that an important component for success is finding partners who share her vision and help realize it.

In spring 2016, Ward resurrected Clairbourn School’s gardens with assistance from Farmscape, a local company that maintains vegetable gardens and home orchards. She pronounces, “I’m a big supporter of gardens because it teaches us important lessons in growing up and having successful lives. Every planting season is an expectation of good things to come – from the seed that’s buried in the ground, vegetables emanate.

Then we have to devise a way to cook them and how to put up the surplus – from dehydrating, to canning or preserving – to feed us through the winter months. We also need to learn long-term planning,

because if we want pumpkins for Halloween, we need to plant seeds in the summer.

“I want gardening to be personal for the kids. When they study American history, I want them to see the crops Native Americans grew – corn, bean, and squash – three sisters planting, they’re called.

There’s a symbiotic relationship where these three crops thrive at one time; the beans are supported by corn stalks and squash grow underneath, to shade its roots and keep moisture in. When students learn about Eli Whitney and the cotton gin, they can see first-hand what that plant looks like and how difficult it is to handle it,” Ward illustrates.

Whether they’re learning “al fresco” or merely enjoying the beautiful scenery, students get some relief from academic stress. Teachers, too, feel the gardens offer a welcome breather during the day. Those who originated the planting program and made horticulture an important component of education have their own personal views of its purpose.

To Barner, it means valuing quality food over processed fare; an appreciation for farmers and their hard toil to produce vegetables; an opportunity for children to have a new learning environment; and taking on the responsibility to preserve this earth for future generations.

For Ward, whose stewardship and constant presence in the gardens has inspired the kids to get their hands in the dirt, it denotes planting a seed to spark the inner gardener of every student and to serve as a regular enrichment activity that teaches great life lessons.

In his 2016-2017 mission statement, Dr. Nafie states, “The abundant nature with which Clairbourn is blessed is clear evidence of annual renewal. That success in aca-

demics, as in life, is not just a momentary event. When students get discouraged or stressed by new concepts, we can help them put down the kind of roots that will feed and sustain their success now and in the future. From the same sturdy plant, many

flowers and crops will bloom in cycles of regeneration. So too, with our students, each year has its seeds, its watering, its below-the-surface, and its above-the-ground work to do. With teamwork and patient tending, the renewal of success will be as-

sured.”

These gardens assume forms of significance as varied as the individuals whose lives they touch. But there is one constant – all the students reap the fruit they have to offer. That is a Clairbourn promise.

AEF’s Bright Night Gala Returns

By Michael Tseng, AUSD Digital Communications Intern On Sept. 24, the Arcadia Educational Foundation (AEF) will be hosting its second annual Bright Night Gala at Prince Erik Hall, Arcadia Congregational Church.

After seeing astounding success at last year’s event, making over $40,000 and attracting 250 guests from the Arcadia community, AEF seeks to match or even increase those numbers.

The gala will help reduce the gap in funding between the Arcadia Unified (AUSD) budget and government funding. This annual fundraiser will raise money and fund the schools of AUSD, providing them with textbooks, teacher grants, counselors, crisis communication systems, and laptops.

The event will feature several exciting performances from Arcadia High School’s Pep Squad, the Arcadia High School Music Club, Arcadia High School’s Drum Line, and Arcadia High School’s Chanteurs.

October is enrollment season. If you’re reaching your 65th birthday, now is the time to plan for Medicare.

Also if you’re over 65 and beginning retirement, Medicare will most likely replace the healthcare plan your employer provided. Many important features of Medicare that you’ll come to rely upon don’t just kick-in. It is each individual’s responsibility to craft a plan that covers their real needs.

Medicare enrollment is voluntary - not automatic.

Medicare is not a right, but a privilege. There is no law to keep you from harming yourself by not accepting this government sponsored health coverage.

Our presentation will begin with the basics - what exactly is Medicare? What is its scope and what are its limitations? Parts A and B, the original program that are still mainstays of coverage today, will be discussed in depth. We want to ensure that everyone walks away with a clear understanding of what they can and cannot expect from basic Medicare coverage.

Medicare is a great benefit, but it doesn’t pay for everything. Many people will need to get some kind of gap coverage. Some may still be eligible for Medicare even if they don’t qualify for Social Security.

There is so much that needs to be known about.

Medicare Part C is often referred to as Medicare Advantage. And in true government form, there are multiple types of Medicare Advantage Plans that you’ll have to sift through. Choosing the wrong

plan means that the right one is not what you’ll get.

After signing up for Medicare, you may choose to buy a Medicare Supplement Insurance policy from a private company (called Medigap). Costs vary by policy and company. So that too needs to be researched and considered. For most of us, price is understandably a major concern. Since Medigap policies are priced differently, we’ll review why that is.

To enroll in Part D, you must first be enrolled in Parts A or B. Did you know: You must enroll in part D within a specific window of being eligible for Medicare or you’ll pay a late fee? This is important.

How many of us even know what Medicare Part D is?

Answer: prescription drug cost coverage. Let alone the so-called Part D donut hole. Sometimes we don’t even know that we don’t know all the things we need to know about. How’s that for a brain twister!

By Dorothy Denne “Refreshments will be served” is probably one of the most frequently appearing sentences. It always gets my attention. My first thought is, "What kind of refreshments?"

I'm not big on sweets.

When I told one of my new friends that, she said she found it hard to believe. She said she doesn't trust people who say they don't like sweets. I told her she could trust me.

I didn't mean I don't like sweets - I meant I don't prefer sweets. I prefer bread, really good bread, especially bread as in sandwiches. Of course I also love hunks of crusty bread dipped in really good olive oil with some herbs.

How about good warm bread slathered with butter?

I even like good warm bread that's not slathered. Only cheap, soft white bread needs to be slathered, preferably with peanut butter. I love peanut butter on anything, even on a spoon.

When refreshments are served, if there are finger sandwiches, I'll take them over cookies - especially if they can be accompanied by those little celery strips filled with peanut butter. Celery is so healthy. When one eats healthy food, it is OK to follow it up with a chocolate chip cookie, especially those big ones with white chocolate chips and nuts.

Attending too many events where refreshments will be served has its consequences.

A few months ago I noticed that the belt on my fanny

pack was becoming more and more snug. Then it went from snug to tight.

One morning, I tried to put it on and I realized the only way it would fit was if I wore it around my neck.

I sorta’ did that for a while, but then I decided that walking with a fanny pack hanging over my shoulder was uncomfortable, impractical, and a little embarrassing.

It was time to do something about it.

Now I can happily tell you it fits around my middle just fine. When I really put my mind to something, I can do just about anything I want.

I went to the fabric store.

For 50 cents, I bought some strapping and made the belt longer. And, I made it adjustable.

So Cal Latinos Lead California Government

By Mary Mcnulty Two Southern California Hispanics are now leaders in both the California House and Senate. This is noteworthy because, number one, state politics are generally controlled

by Northern California politicians, such as Jerry Brown and Kamila Harris.

Number two: this is the first time both bodies have been led by Hispanics.

Democrat Anthony Rendon, speaker of the California Assembly, is from the LA area, while Senate Leader Kevin de Leon represents LA Senate District 24, according to senate.ca.gov.

Both support programs to benefit low-income residents, such as “Raise the Wage” to a minimum of $15, as well as issues impacting education, pollution, and water.

According to latinodecisions.com, Clean public transportation, green jobs, and continued educational opportunities within the Latino community are concerns.

While progress has been made, Hispanics are still underrepresented, especially at the local level. “While Latinos have surpassed 39 percent of the population of California, we have an atrocious voter turnout rate,” said Assembly Member Luis Alejo (D-Watsonville), chairman of the Legislative Latino Caucus.

A quick analysis confirms that despite undertaking leadership roles, there is still a need for improvement in participation in Los Angeles poli-

tics. Only 10 percent of county supervisors and 15 percent of city council members are Latinos. At the state level, 12.5 percent of the senate and 23.8 percent of the assembly are composed of Latinos, according to the LA Times.

The major battle for the community, from both leaders’ perspectives, is fighting poverty. “Since I was sworn in, I have been talking about adopting an aggressive strategy towards dealing with poverty. Raising the minimum wage has been one of the strategies proven in other locales to be effective at reducing income inequality and poverty," Rendon said in an interview with NBC News Latino.

It is likely, according to a number of strategists, that Latinos do not feel involved in the process, consequently they do not participate. “People do not engage in their government, even in the most limited ways, including voting, unless they feel they have a stake in it, and there's an enormous swath of Latinos who don't feel that they are engaged in California's society," Mike Madrid, Republican strategist, theorized.

The disenfranchised theory is also supported by members of the legislature.

"Voting is the end result of people who feel engaged. If you don't feel engaged, if you don't think it matters, why would you show up to vote?” asked Susan Talamantes Eggman (D-Stockton) The two leaders have the

responsibility to ensure all Latino voters feel they have an impact. Rendon and de Leon have succeeded in achieving the American dream through self-belief and dedication.

Both received an excellent education, worked hard to ensure upward mobility, and basically had faith in their own vision. As with any good leader, they must understand their constituents and many Hispanics are anticipating more discussions, especially in the area of education.

“It is great and all that there are Latinos in the highest office, but Latinos are still struggling,” said Rudy Acuna, professor emeritus at California State, Northridge. “If they [Latino elected officials] want to make a difference in the lives of students, have them come down and talk to faculty and teachers, not just the administration. No other leaders have come to speak to us on how to change our struggling statistics,” he said.

Looking back to 1970, Latinos made up 12 percent of California’s population. By 1990, the figure increased to about 25 percent of the state.

Today, the figure is 39 percent and noted by LA Times to grow to 49 percent by 2060.

Rendon and de Leon have the task of ensuring that Latino participation in the voting process continues to grow. This will be achieved by addressing the issues which most impact their constituents, such as an increased minimum wage and educational opportunities.

Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson Honors Latino Heritage Month State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson recently honored Latino Heritage Month with a celebration at the California Department of Education (CDE) headquarters building.

Torlakson recognized the many contributions of Latinos to California's economy, society, government, entertainment, business, culture, and public education system and stated he is “Latino de Corazon” - Latino at heart. California has nearly 15 million Latinos in the state population.

Of the more than 6.2 million students in California public schools, 53 percent are Latinos and 1.4 million are English learners.

“This is a terrific day to

recognize the outstanding accomplishments that Latinos have achieved, and continue to achieve, throughout every part of California life.

Latinos have added so much to the rich cultural diversity that makes California such a great and dynamic place to live,” Torlakson said.

According to the 2014 US Census, there are 55.3 million Latinos in the United States - more than 65 percent of the foreign-born are of Mexican descent.

In 1968, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed into law the “National Hispanic Heritage Week,” beginning Sept. 15, to coincide with the independence of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua.

$10 Million Lawsuit Filed Against Debt Collection Giant Los Angeles County District Attorney Jackie Lacey recently announced a $10 million lawsuit against debt collection giant iQor US Inc. (iQor) and its subsidiary, Allied Interstate LLC (Allied), for placing unlawful and harassing calls to consumers.

The civil complaint filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court alleges that iQor and Allied violated state and federal laws, as well as consumers’ right to privacy. The lawsuit was filed jointly by district attorneys in Los Angeles, Riverside, San Diego, and Santa Clara Counties.

The companies are accused of a myriad of offenses, including subjecting many individuals to repetitive calls for months on end, even when no money was owed.

For example, the complaint cites the case of a couple from Windsor, Calif., who received hundreds of calls from Allied for more than three years, despite their continual efforts to convince the company’s representatives they called the wrong number.

Even after repeated pleas and a call to the company from a police officer,

the calls persisted. Allied ceased the calls only after being notified that the couple had contacted the California Attorney General's Office. In addition, iQor and Allied used automated dialers to call cell phones without permission, in violation of federal law. The companies also called people before 8 a.m. and after 9 p.m. and tried to collect debts that had been discharged in bankruptcy.

SoCalGas to Pay $4 Million for Failing to Immediately Report Aliso Canyon Gas Leak

Los Angeles County District Attorney Jackie Lacey recently announced a $4 million settlement with Southern California Gas Co. (SoCalGas) that will require the utility to pay the maximum fine authorized by law and to adopt safety measures beyond those required by federal and state laws at its Aliso Canyon Natural Gas Storage Facility.

“This agreement ensures that Southern California Gas Co. is held accountable for its criminal actions for failing to immediately report the leak,” District Attorney Lacey said. “Our office has helped bring the Aliso Canyon facility into compliance, keeping in mind that public safety is of the upmost importance,” she said.

“Going forward the protections put in place by this agreement create a safer facility for its employees, the

environment and the surrounding communities.”

The company pleaded no contest to one misdemeanor count of failing to immediately report the Oct. 23, 2015, gas leak to the California Office of Emergency Services and to the local Certified Unified Program Agency.

Pursuant to the plea, SoCal Gas will be ordered to pay $307,500, which includes the maximum fine of $75,000 plus a penalty assessment of $232,500. With this conviction, the company is on notice and could face a more serious criminal penalty in the future if the same unlawful conduct occurs.

As part of the agreement, the company will be required to install and maintain a new, infrared methane monitoring system at the Aliso Canyon site that will cost between $1.2 and $1.5

million. Real-time pressure monitors also will be placed at each gas well, as required by the state. The settlement requires that an outside company be retained to test and certify that both systems are working properly.

Pursuant to the agreement, six full-time employees will be hired to operate and maintain the new leak detection systems 24 hours a day. The total cost for these positions will be approximately $2.25 million for the next three years.

The agreement requires the company to revise and adopt new reporting policies for actual and threatened releases of hazardous materials to the appropriate agencies. It further mandates training courses on proper notification procedures for all SoCal Gas employees who work at natural gas storage facilities within

MHS Tennis Features Four Adopted Sisters

By Christian Romo LiAnna Fritz exits her first doubles set of the season with a 6-1 loss. She bounces throughout the match, mixing in jokes, laughs, “sorrys,” and “that’s OK” with her partner and, occasionally, her opponents.

She plays tennis with optimism, acting politely towards her competition and criticizing nobody. Her serve is more refined than most on the court and, though she struggles with long shots, her body language remains upbeat. After she speaks with her coach and two sisters, I ask her how she feels after playing her first set.

“Angry,” she replies.

Though surprising, this is an appropriate response, because all of the Fritz children are inherently surprising.

You see, there are six of them, none of whom look alike, except for the two that do, and the other three who do too, and yes, that leaves one more - I promise I’ll explain that as well.

When it comes to the Fritz family, there’s a lot of explaining to do.

First come Robert and Eric, who are 27 and 26 years

old, respectively, and who are Marilyn and Larry Fritz’s only biological children. They both grew up on the east coast and are currently adults living outside of the Fritz’s charming Monrovia home.

There was nothing abnormal about the Fritz’s and their two boys 15 years ago, except that according to Larry, “Marilyn always wanted to have a girl, or several girls.”

Marilyn also has an activist’s heart and wanted to make a difference. “I was a child of the ‘60s,” she says, “so I wanted to go to a place that mattered. Vietnam was very important to me.”

The Fritz’s set out to adopt a girl from Vietnam and, in 2001, they found Li Thi Bay. Li was only three years old when Marilyn and Larry met her in a town five hours north of Hanoi, and when they brought her home to Washington, D.C., they combined her birth name with a name they always wanted to name a daughter - and called her LiAnna.

Fifteen years later, LiAnna begins her senior year at Monrovia High School (MHS).

Along with schoolwork and varsity tennis, she’s a member of the Associated Student

Body and a Spirit Chair in Key Club.

She is bright and well spoken. She has a cat she calls Pipoca. “That means ‘popcorn’ in Portuguese,” she tells me. “He’s my baby.”

LiAnna blends in well with her teammates, mostly because she’s lived in the United States for all but a few years of her life, and partly because she’s resilient to change. “When she was six months here,” her mother Marilyn tells me, “she moved from D.C. to Arizona. A year later she moved to Maine … she lived in four houses in a year and a half.”

When asked how LiAnna handled it, her mother responded, “Astonishingly well.”

This patience helped her when Marilyn and Larry decided to adopt again eight years after adopting LiAnna.

Through an agency, they found three more girls: Bernadette, Regine, and Sharmaine.

The three girls were born in Manila, the capital of the Philippines, and were orphaned when both their parents died at a young age. Bernadette was 5 years old, Regine was 3, and Sharmaine 2. A wealthy aunt stepped in after the parents’ death, but at the time

a long first set win, first-year singles player Jessica Lee tells Peter that she’s too tired to continue. Peter informs Regine that she is replacing Jessica for the second set and, for the first time all afternoon, Regine leaves Bernadette’s side.

It’s easy to see why Regine is first off the bench for the Wildcats: she’s quick and even though she’s less imposing than most of the other players, she has a confident stroke honed by weeks of summertime practice.

Her sister and coach cheer her on, but she falls 6-1 to a tough opponent. Her smile stays plastered on her face as she exits the court, though, greeting Bernadette and a few other teammates.

Monrovia has already clinched the victory by the third round of singles matches, so Peter subs in the rest of his bench, including Bernadette. She isn’t too happy about this; though she wants to play, she prefers playing doubles.

“There’s less pressure,” she tells me. She falls in the match’s final set 6-2.

Back in Monrovia, Sharmaine stars as the JV team’s number one singles player, winning two out of three sets against Marshall.

All four girls play on the same day, albeit in different cities, winning half of their eight total matches. It was a solid day overall for Monrovia tennis and the Fritz family.

As the team packs up, I give my farewells and best wishes. The three girls are mostly uninterested, focusing instead on talking to their friends and getting back home. Though certainly different from the rest of their teammates, at this point it is nearly impossible to pick them out of a crowd. They were just three high school girls who had finished their first match of the season.

La Salle’s Amon Milliner Runs for 239 Yards in 44-6 Win Over Muir

By Christian Romo The matchup of Pasadena’s two best teams turned out to be a one-sided affair.

Behind a second straight 200-plus yard rushing performance from senior Amon Milliner (#5), the La Salle Lancers (3-1) defeated the Muir Mustangs (2-1) 44-6 Friday night at Kohorst Field.

Milliner, who ran for a season-high 256 yards last week against Bishop Diego, followed this week with 239 rushing yards and three touchdowns against the Mustangs.

Lancer’s senior quarterback Jake Caan (#8) completed 10 of 12 passes for 121 yards and two touchdowns, both to senior Harrison MacDonald (#15), who lead both teams with 77 receiving yards.

La Salle also received

blitzing performances from senior linebacker Jake Rose (#43) and junior defensive tackle Andres Garcia (#72), who opened up the scoring with an interception return for a touchdown deep in Mustang territory, early in the first quarter.

With their nearly impenetrable defensive front and effective ground game, La Salle confirmed its position as Pasadena’s best high school team. “[We have to] get back into the film room, we gotta’ study, and we gotta’ fight,” Muir coach Antyone Sims said of his team’s performance.

The Mustangs, who came into the season with high hopes following a disappointing 2015 season, still look to have best the team in the Pacific League. Any hope of competing with the area’s best, however, was dashed

against La Salle.

“The first thing we gotta do is get healthy,” Sims commented, looking forward to the beginning of league play next week against Burbank.

La Salle’s win was not without issues. The Lancers once again racked up a litany of personal fouls and unsportsmanlike conducts, one leading to an ejection of one of its players early in the third quarter. Taunting on the sideline and fighting on the field forced La Salle’s coaching staff to call an in-game meeting reinforcing sportsmanship and respect. Though the impressive win might not show it, the city’s best team is far from perfect.

Muir travels back home to face Burbank Friday at 7 p.m., while La Salle travels to Scottsdale, Ariz. to face Notre Dame Prep Friday at 7 p.m.
