Eco-Friendly Luxury at Shore Hotel in Santa Monica
Built to stringent certified Gold LEED standards, the boutique hotel is ideal for environmentally-conscious hotel goers who don’t want to sacrifice a lavish experience. - Photo by Greg Aragon
BY GREG ARAGON There are hotels with great amenities and there are others with perfect locations. And then there are those that have both, such as the Shore Hotel in Santa Monica. This modern oceanfront property sits on one of the hippest streets in Los Angeles, while overlooking an historic pier and an exciting, eclectic city. What more could a traveler want? Well, how about a fun and creative Mexican restaurant attached to the property for good measure. My getaway to Shore began when a friend and I checked into a chic suite at the 164-room hotel. Highlighted by a balcony with sweeping views of Santa Monica Pier, the ocean and the resort pool, the room was luxurious yet efficient. Like all eco-friendly rooms at Shore, ours featured controlled lighting and temperature that is automatically adjusted as visitors enter and leave, using the room key, which reduces energy costs by 35 percent - 45 percent.
Built to stringent certified Gold LEED standards, the boutique hotel is ideal for environmentally-conscious hotel goers who don’t want to sacrifice a lavish experience. Every aspect of the hotel was designed to reduce the consumption of natural resources, from the building design itself to day-to-day operation. As much as possible, the hotel relies on locally procured recycled and recyclable materials, many salvaged from the building’s demolished preexisting site for use in the new build. A few of the many sustainable building highlights include the swimming pool, which is heated by solar energy; drought-resistant plants in landscaping save that 20 percent more water; more than 90 percent of guest rooms have a direct line of sight to the outdoors and natural daylight; a storm water management plan that captures and treats storm water runoff; and lowemitting paint and carpets free of volatile organic compounds (VOCS). Besides cool green features, the room boasts a
large flat screen TV, wireless Internet, big king bed, with 100 percent pure Egyptian cotton sheets, and a very unique glass enclosed shower that allows bathers to watch TV or look outside while getting clean. Beyond the rooms, the hotel boasts a heated pool and Jacuzzi in a beautiful open air atrium, with plants, trees, fire and water features –all of which face the pier and busy Ocean Blvd. And next to the pool and Zen Garden is the Blue Plate Taco restaurant, where we enjoyed a wonderful outdoor dining experience. Offering still more ocean views, the independently-owned Blue Plate Taco is a healthy, authentic update to the classic taco stand and gets its inspiration from the fresh, coastal cuisine found in seaside towns throughout Mexico. The food is created in a large open kitchen and is highlighted by an exciting variety of tacos, ceviches, grilled seafood and meats, salads, soups and inventive salsas. Our meal began on the patio, with Mexican beers,
fresh guacamole and chips. We then shared a tasty beet salad, while watching the giant, lighted Ferris wheel at the Santa Monica Pier spin in the night. For the main course we each ordered Blue Plate’s special lobster dinner. Beautifully presented on a large, colorful plate, the lobster arrived in a shell, with corn salsa, creamy garlic sauce and homemade flour tortillas. With it we ordered a side of rice and beans. The lobster meat was abundant, “mucho” tender and cooked perfectly. After we successfully devoured our shellfish, we toasted dinner with a couple shots of premium tequila from the restaurant’s bar. The next morning I worked out in the hotel’s fitness center and then walked across the street to the beach and strolled along the sand toward the lights of Santa Monica Pier’s iconic Ferris wheel. To find out more information about the Shore Hotel and its restaurants such as the Blue Plate Taco, visit www.shorehotel. com or call (310) 458-1515.

Monrovia has an unusual zip code. It reads the same way right side up as upside down. Sure there are a dozen other such codes (think 10001 or 60009, etc.), but Monrovians will be able to celebrate their zip code on its own day in a few weeks. On Sept. 10, 2016, the whole town is invited to celebrate the day, after all it will be 9/10/16 … 91016. In order to highlight the celebration, the Monrovia Public Library is holding a special Postcard Contest.

test results released by the California Department of Education on Aug. 24. Arcadia scored 40 percent higher than the state average for math and 26 percent higher in English language arts/literacy (ELA). The results for the rigorous California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) showed that the statewide average for students meeting or exceeding the math standard was 37 percent. Arcadia Unified students met or exceeded the math standard at a rate of 77 percent. The statewide average for ELA was higher at 49 percent, and once again Arcadia Unified students far surpassed the average at 77 percent. Arcadia Unified students also showed improvement in math, scoring 2 percent higher than last year’s baseline test, while remaining steady at 77 percent in ELA. “We are very pleased with the scores and greatly appreciate the impressive work by our students, teachers, and we can’t forget our parents, as we have all taken on the new California Standards curriculum and these new standardized tests the past few years,” said AUSD Superintendent Dr. David Vannasdall. “These results are just one of many indicators that we will use to help ensure our students are receiving the highest quality and most well-rounded education possible.” Percentage of students who met or exceeded state standards 2016: - California average: English 49 percent, math 37 percent. - Arcadia Unified: English 77 percent, math 77 percent (2 percent increase from 2015). The CAASPP, first introduced in 2014-2015, includes a number of different assessments, but the most widely administered are the Smarter Balanced Summa-
Anyone of any age is welcome to create a Monrovia Postcard. The library will even furnish blank postcards with the finished cards due back this Saturday, Sept. 3. Judges will select the first, second, and third place winners, with the winner being announced on the day of the event. Library staff will have all the cards postmarked by our postmaster with a very special commemorative stamp and sent back to each participant’s
residence. On Sept. 10, Mayor Tom Adams will kick off the celebration at 11 a.m. in Library Park. Local non-profits will be on hand with fun activities for the kids (and kids can be of any age). There will also be art opportunities, lots of handouts, and even free hot dogs (the latter courtesy of Athens Services). There will also be a community photo taken by Shane Nichols at 1:30 p.m. in front of the fountain in Library Park. This should
be especially entertaining as the photo will be taken from a drone. There are commemorative Zip Code Day items available for purchase online including t-shirts, mugs, water bottles, hats, etc. For more information, go to http://fspdesigns.com/zipcodeday. The Monrovia Chamber of Commerce will have a unique Monrovia postcard available to the first 300 people who visit their booth at the festivities.

tive Assessments in math and English. These measure depth of understanding, writing, research, and problem-solving skills. The online tests, based on California’s challenging academic stand-
ards, ask students to write clearly, think critically, and solve complex problems, just as they will need to do in college and on the job. Students in grades three through eight and 11 were tested.
Last year’s scores of the new test were used as a baseline, with this year providing the first comparable data set. However, the California Department of Education has stressed that multiple years of data will be needed to get a more accurate assessment of gains and improvement. AUSD parents should be receiving their individual student assessment scores in the mail soon if they haven’t already received them. Assemblymember Chris Holden (AD – 41) has been elected by his colleagues to chair the California Legislative Black Caucus (CLBC). Lawmakers joining Assemblymember Holden to the newly elected leadership team include Assemblymembers Shirley Webber (AD – 78), vice chair; Sebastian Ridley-Thomas (AD – 54), secretary; and Kevin McCarty (AD – 7), treasurer. “I’m extremely proud to serve as chair for the Black Caucus,” said Assemblymember Chris Holden. “Together with my colleagues, I look forward to continuing our efforts to advance equality, justice, and opportunity for all Californians.” This past year, the CLBC, held multiple “Black Minds Matter” informational briefings throughout the state with the Education Trust–West Organization to
address California’s nearly one million Black Youth, including one hosted by Assemblymember Holden in Pasadena. The briefings brought elected leaders, educators, stakeholders and community leaders together in order to better implement policies that close the opportunity and achievement gap for California’s Black Youth. The CLBC takes policy positions on numerous bills, advances a two-part policy agenda – an education and black enterprise initiative, and provides scholarships and leadership opportunities for Californian’s Black Youth. Established in 1967, the mission of the CLBC is to provide full inclusion of California’s African American residents in every aspect of California life – from education, employment, housing, health, commerce and government services.
