The San Gabriel Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District has detected West Nile virus (WNV) throughout the San Gabriel Valley. The District's surveillance program monitors WNV in several host species as its early warning system to detect the presence of WNV in the community. The program monitors WNV in mosquitoes, sentinel chickens, and birds reported dead to the California Department of Public Health's WNV hotline. The following is a West Nile virus surveillance update as of Aug. 12, 2016: Twenty three WNV positive mosquito samples have been collected from the following cities. - Arcadia. - Azusa. - Pomona. - San Gabriel. - West Covina. Five WNV positive dead birds have been reported from the following cities. - Altadena. - Monrovia. - Temple City. - Glendora. Since its introduction in 2003, WNV has infected more than 5,588 people and caused 229 deaths statewide, according to the California Depart-

ment of Public Health. The best precaution against WNV is to prevent mosquito bites. It is critical that residents remove all standing water on their property to prevent mosquito production. Mosquitoes lay their eggs in stagnant water such as neglected pools, buckets, miscellaneous containers, puddles, and ponds. Eggs can hatch and develop into biting adults in four to seven days. Throughout the summer, basic protective measures should be followed: - Wear mosquito repellent and protective clothing when outdoors while mosquitoes are active (especially around dawn and dusk). - Regularly inspect property to identify and remove sources of standing water where mosquitoes lay their eggs and grow. - Ensure doors and windows are properly screened. Report increased mosquito activity, sources of standing water, and green pools to the District at (626) 814-9466 or online at www. SGVmosquito.org. Report dead birds to the WNV Hotline at (877) WNV-BIRD ((877) 968-2473) or online at www.westnile. ca.gov.

local news How A.I. Could Be a Firefighter’s ‘Guardian Angel’

Firefighters have only their wits and five senses to rely on inside a burning building. But research developed in part by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena may change that by introducing artificial intelligence (AI) that could collect data on temperatures, gases and other danger signals and guide a team of first responders safely through the flames. AUDREY, the Assistant for Understanding Data through Reasoning, Extraction, and sYnthesis, has received the Undersecretary’s Award for Collaboration from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in recognition of its joint development by JPL and DHS. It’s part of the Next Generation First Responder (NGFR) program, a DHS initiative to innovate new ways to keep firefighters, police, paramedics and other first responders safe in the field through increased awareness of their surroundings and communication abilities. The gas company recently notified the city that approximately 1 percent of its 5.5 million customers who have Meter Transmission Units have had their gas usage under-reported. This resulted in underbilling those customers. SoCalGas sent out letters to 11,000 customers on Monday to notify them that their meters would need to be replaced. Once the meters are changed out, the gas company will be able to determine the extent of the under-billing. Charges

for the actual amount of gas used will be reflected on the next bill those customers receive. through an environment, AUDREY could send alerts through a mobile device or head-mounted display,” said Mark James of JPL, lead scientist for the AUDREY project. AUDREY is designed to be integrated with the “Internet of Things” - the idea of numerous devices and sensors all wirelessly “talking” to one another. In the case

of firefighters, wearable sensors in their clothes could pick up their GPS location, heat in other rooms, the presence of dangerous chemicals and gases, satellite imagery of a location and much more. “When first responders are connected to all these sensors, the AUDREY agent becomes their guardian angel,” said Edward Chow, manager of JPL’s Civil Program

Office and program manager for AUDREY. “Because of all this data the sensor sees, firefighters won’t run into the next room where the floor will collapse.” John Merrill, NGFR program manager for the DHS Science and Technology Directorate, said that technology is rapidly providing new strengths for first responders in the field.

GROUND BREAKING FORECLOSURE RULING! The California Supreme Court ruled on February 18, 2016 that a homeowner has the right to challenge his lender's authority to foreclose based upon void assignments of the loan to third parties. The high court expressly upheld an earlier California Appellate opinion called Glaski v Bank of America. This decision could set aside many foreclosures and/or obtain monetary damages, settle lawsuits with modifications and prevent foreclosures from happening in the first place. This decision will hopefully provide our firm with even more legal leverage to not only set aside many foreclosures and /or obtain money damages, but settle lawsuits with modifications and prevent foreclosures from happening in the first place. Two Sides to Every Story – Especially in Sierra Madre Dear Editor: In response to ‘Mind Your Manners, Good Folk!” – Aug. 11 Letters – The coward whose name was withheld by request, get your facts straight before you make unsubstantiated allegations and think you were one inconvenienced by the “rude and boorish behavior of the two ladies …” You say they “apparently arrived a few minutes before the concert and proceeded to neatly fold and set aside” your blankets. Did you see them do this? Did anyone see them do this? No! Because I personally set up my mother and her friend’s chairs on Saturday evening ( without moving or folding and blankets or chairs.) These two “rude and boorish” ladies happen to be Matriachs in this great city, residing here since 1950s, raising their families of six and eight children,

attending St. Rita’s Church every Sunday and sacrificing many hours ( years) of dedicated service for many community events. Yup, Sir (and I say this reluctantly), are the one who should be ashamed for your rude and boorish behavior by harassing and threatening them. As for your ethical guidelines and responsible citizen remarks, perhaps you should take a look in the mirror and ask yourself if it’s appropriate to verbally abuse two very fine, morally upstanding women in their mid-80’s- with no basis whatsoever. - Steve Behrens SIERRA MADRE

Response to Monthly Highlight ‘Common Core Curriculum’ (8/11/16 Issue)

I can’t believe we’re still debating this. No results. Lots of money spent. The federal government is even backing down. The math material is lousy. My

kids are using textbooks with tutors written in 1999 — there is no comparison to the current CCSS-aligned texts. It will eventually go away in favor of the next education fad but by that time, it will have damaged a generation of students. And yes, the major damage is to minorities and the less affluent whose families and districts can’t find ways to learn around the standards. A few years ago about 30 percent of minority students in the state scored over the line in 8th grade algebra. That’s a big accomplishment since 8th grade algebra leads to STEM college degrees in better universities. Instead of working to get this number to, say 35 percent, the Common Core supports read the 30 percent as a failure and instead encouraged districts to cancel eighth grade algebra. Of course in the wealthy districts the parents showed up with pitchforks and the course is still being taught. Our district in Marin has about 25 percent of students in it and Cupertino boasts that they are about 80 percent. The heavily minority dis-

Reader Responds to ‘Pasadena Residents Rally … ’ (8/11/16 Issue)

Wonderful article by Terry Miller, who so concisely grasped the main points of the protest at the Pasadena Civic Center. To give away public land, purchased by the people of Pasadena for a park, is against the intent of the people. In this age of climate change, where every tree has a value in absorbing the onslaught of carbon in our air, no hotel is worth the demolition of this park and its trees. Responses to Floretta’s Passing

I want to let you know how very sad I was to learn of Floretta’s passing. I had the pleasure of working with her in my role as a publicist for more than 20 years. She was always so delightful and was also very thorough and accurate in her work. I count myself among her many many fans. She made a difference in so many lives and leaves a big hole. I am very sorry for your loss. - Libby Huebner, Ad Lib Communications I am deeply saddened by the passing of this amazing woman and friend. Arcadia has lost a true legend. Floretta’s dedication had no limits and her accomplishments were many and enduring. I believe that one of her greatest gifts to our community was her ability

to mentor and encourage individuals to become involved in leadership positions throughout the city. Not only did she value and promote the importance of tradition, she was forwardthinking and knew that Arcadia’s future lies in the hands of first-class leaders. I was blessed to know Floretta for over 40 years and I am going to truly miss her spirit and friendship. - Marilyn Daleo

Pasadena Certified Farmers’ Market By Gus Herrera

T

he Pasadena Certified Farmers’ Market (PCFM) is re-defining the way farmers’ markets connect the local agrarian and urban communities. When one thinks of a farmers’ market, images of a trendy, expensive setting, populated by hipsters, foodies, and vegans may come to mind. Although the idea of providing an environment in which the community-atlarge may do business directly with local growers sounds theoretically fantastic, farmers’ markets are typically not a family’s go-to shopping destination for weekly groceries – especially for those with lower incomes. Moreover, the fact that most cities/towns host these markets only once a week furthers the contrast between the convenience of being able to visit your nearby chain grocery store anytime during the week (at more or less any hour of the day) and having to plan ahead, buying all of your week’s supplies in one day. Here in the San Gabriel Valley, all of these stereotypes and misconceptions are being shattered by the PCFM. Not only does the PCFM operate two days out of the week (Tuesday and Saturday) in two convenient locations, the market also offers a variety of services for patrons from all walks of life, to ensure that purchasing its fresh, local food is just as convenient and accessible as a trip to Vons or Ralphs. The PCFM is made up of the Villa Parke Center Market (Tuesdays) and the larger Victory Park Market (Saturdays). Both boast a lengthy relationship with the city, the Villa Parke Center Market started in 1980 and its Victory Park counterpart began four years later in 1984. It did not take long for the PCFM to be recognized for its greatness, in

1997, the market received the Arthur Nobel Award for “Making Life Better in Pasadena.” The PCFM is sponsored by the City of Pasadena Human Services and Recreation Department and, as a Certified Farmers’ Market, all farmers/vendors are approved by the county agricultural commissioner. The PCFM’s certified status provides several benefits for both farmers and consumers, including competitive, fair prices and the transparency every patron deserves when it comes to their food. When you shop at the PCFM, you can rest assured that every vendor you do business with personally grew, cooked, or prepared the items you so desire. The PCFM cuts out any commercial/marketing middlemen, allowing consumers to save money. By allowing farmers to sell in smaller amounts than the traditional high-volume distribution systems, the market levels the playing field for smaller, family-owned farms. Smaller volumes also result in higher standards of quality, as well as allowing farmers to sell more delicate, tree-ripened fruit that would otherwise be unable to survive the commercial packing/shipping process. As soon as you step onto the market grounds, you are immediately greeted with a plethora of delicious scents and vibrant colors. At the Victory Park Market, the San Gabriel Valley’s largest farmers’ market that sometimes hosts up to 40 different vendors, shoppers can find just about anything their heart (or stomach) desires. In addition to all the fresh, locally-grown produce, the Victory Park Market offers a variety of food artisans, along with fresh fish, organic beef, breads, and some other specialty items. Whether you are looking for fruit, Kimchi, or shellfish, you can be sure to find it on Saturday mornings at Victory Park.

There is also a refreshing selection of plants and flowers. As far as special services go, the PCFM offers quite a few. The Villa Parke Center Market will soon celebrate the first anniversary of its Market Match Program, which began in September 2015. The program, which is intended for recipients of CalFresh, WiC, SSI, and SSDI, matches up to $10 per market day, affording qualified individuals better access to fresh fruits and vegetables. According to Gretchen Sterling, manager of the PCFM, funds for the Market Match program were made available by Hunger Action L.A. and the Pasadena Unified School District and, during its first nine months, the program gave out more than $7,000. The Victory Park Market recently began a Market Token program, which allows patrons to purchase tokens via a debit/credit/ATM card. As farmers’ markets are predominantly cash-only establishments, this program certainly secures convenience for the modern shopper. Both markets also proudly offer CalFresh, a federal supplemental nutrition assistance program that helps qualified individuals add fresh fruits and vegetables to their diet by providing them with monthly electronic benefits. Additional programs include Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT); Women, Infant, and Children Program; Senior Nutrition Program; and more. For more information, visit the Victory Park Market’s friendly information booth. PCFM’s Saturday market hours at Victory Park (2575 Paloma St.) are 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The Tuesday market at Villa Parke Community Center (363 E. Villa St.) is open from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Both are open “rain or shine” and there is always plenty of free parking nearby.

August College Search Guide

I

By May S. Ruiz

t’s August – for some kids summer vacation is winding down, while for others it has ended. If your children are heading back to school this week, I hope they had the chance to breathe, decompress, and savor the lull because they are once more face-to-face with the realities of high school life. Students have their plates full with all kinds of activities and much has been written in the newspapers about how stressed out they are. Happily, besides being sleep-deprived, most of them get through the four years relatively unscathed. Recognizing the near-impossible feat of getting accepted to highly-selective schools, the Harvard Graduate School of Education released a study early this year called “Turning the Tide: Inspiring Concern for Others and the Common Good Through College Admissions”. Among other things, it advocates reducing stress and leveling the playing field for students. About 80 colleges and universities across the United States have endorsed the findings of the report. An important factor in the admissions process is the

students’ (and parents’) preconceived ideas about where they should apply and what their dream school is. Oftentimes, kids apply to the same dozen or so most-recognizable university names. This creates an unhealthy and, sometimes, unreasonable expectation. There are innumerable colleges and universities that offer excellent teaching; there is a school out there that is the right fit for your child. Recognize your children’s abilities and set your sights accordingly. FRESHMAN

High school is vastly different from middle school. Your children no longer have a “home room”; they have different sets of classmates for each subject; they make their own choices of academic courses, athletic activities, art electives, campus clubs. More importantly, all their activities and grades will go on their resume; each AP course they take, sport they play, will count. Usually there is a “Back to School Night” when parents get to meet all the teachers. This is a chance for you to see what your children will be learning during the school

year. While you will no longer be as involved in your children’s activities as in previous years, find the time to be aware of what’s happening. Some schools welcome, even solicit, parents’ help for certain campus events. SOPHOMORE

Your children have fully transitioned into high school, the demands of which were drilled into their subconscious the past school year. With ninth grade behind them; they need to face sophomore year with renewed energy and enthusiasm. JUNIOR

Hopefully, your kids got a lot of rest because in a few weeks they will be embarking on one of the most hectic years of high school life. Make sure your children confer with their school’s college counselor to ascertain they have all the courses required for graduating and for college. They need to know what standardized exams they’ll need to take for college application. They should research which colleges and universities offer the course(s) they would like to pursue. This

is also the moment to have a conversation with your children about financing their college education. Take the time to attend this year’s “Back to School Night” as it will take on greater significance than previous ones. The school counselors are usually present to give parents an overview of what you and your children will be expecting when the application process shifts into gear in the spring. SENIOR

By now, your children should know where they will be applying and have visited the schools. They should have taken all standardized exams required for college applications, firmed up their college/ university list, researched all kinds of scholarships, lined up teachers to write their recommendations, perfected their personal statement, and learned how to complete the common application. They practically have to have their running shoes on by the time they get in the door of their high school! If you’re applying for financial aid, there is an important and permanent change to the Free Application for

Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) that will affect you. Beginning with the 2017-2018 application cycle, you will be able to file as early as Oct. 1, 2016 instead of beginning on Jan. 1, 2017. You will be required to report your 2015 income information rather than your 2016 earnings. COLLEGE FRESHMAN

Are your kids ready to leave their childhood behind? In a week or so, they will be on a road not traveled. College life exposes them to the real world and I hope you let them practice

how to live independently of you during summer break. Things they took for granted before – eating actual home-cooked meals, getting clothes laundered weekly for them, room being miraculously cleaned – will suddenly be their responsibilities. You won’t be there to do any of these. If their school offers catered meals, that’s one less chore for them to worry about. But there’ll still be laundry to do. Congratulations, parents! You have successfully launched your child to college and adulthood. Hello, empty nest syndrome!

The Financial Factors to Consider When Planning for College When planning ahead, parents and students should factor in the total cost of attendance. For example, the average estimated tuition at a public four-year in-state university is $9,410. However the total can balloon to $24,061 when you factor in other costs such as room and board, books and supplies, transportation, other expenses and fees. What are the options to plan ahead? There are essentially three main paths parents and students can take to plan ahead. For parents, first and foremost they should have their emergency savings in place, maximize their retirement plan contribution for the employer match and pay down high interest debt. After these three goals, if there are additional resources left to put away for college education then the following strategies should be considered. Save: There are several options when it comes to saving for education. Investing early and allowing the funds to compound can be an efficient way to pre-pay for higher education. Free Money: The total cost of obtaining an undergraduate degree seems ex-

pensive. However, finding other resources can help reduce the net bill. One possibility is having friends and relatives help give the gift of college education by deposit the money they would have spent on gifts into a 529 plan. Scholarships and grants is money that does not have to be paid back. There are several grant and scholarship programs available at the federal level, state level and via nonprofit organizations. Check your state website for information. Borrow: Ultimately, many students and parents need to borrow money to finance the dream of attending college. A few sources of financing are federal student loans, private student loans, financial aid offered by the university, home equity cash out and peer-to peer lending. Which option is best? The decision as to which option is the best fit involves an in-depth conversation with your financial planning expert. If you are interested in interviewing a First Bank professional on this topic or other banking and financial subjects, please contact Greg Severin at (314) 968-3060 or gseverin@lentsandassoc. com.

Duarte Unified Starts New School Year With Competitive Advantage When students and staff returned to school at Duarte Unified School District (DUSD) on Aug. 15, it marked not only the first day of the new academic year, but also the launch of the Competitive Advantage Plan (CAP), the district’s five-year strategic plan. A resolution to adopt the CAP was approved unanimously by the board of education on July 21. This plan will be used as a blueprint for the next five years as the district's fundamental guide for priorities and decision making discussions. The CAP is the result of findings based on a comprehensive nine-month data collection process. This included a community-wide survey administered by the Claremont Graduate University’s Evaluation Center that yielded over 4,200 respondents. Additional details and strategies were collected through over 50 focus group sessions with students, parents, certificated and classified staff at all school sites, a variety of members of the community, including civic and business leaders, parents exiting DUSD, alumni, and faith leaders in the community. In all, over 5,000 stakeholders participated in the process. All of the data collected was vetted through the district’s community education council, comprised of representatives from all stakeholder groups, who together with the district leadership team met regularly throughout the year to examine the data, discuss strategies, and develop the actionable items contained in the plan. “This plan is our beacon to guide us for the next five years,” said Superintendent

Allan Mucerino. “It is the compilation of much study and work through the efforts of a writing team, a steering committee of staff, and a steering committee of community members. It reflects an honest look at where we are and where we need to be as we meet the needs of our students. The Competitive Advantage Plan is our blueprint to produce the 21st century learners that are necessary for success in the world.” As a result, the district adopted a new vision statement: “21st Century Schools Producing 21st Century Students.’’ The mission statement was also updated to read: “The mission of the Duarte Unified School District is to provide the knowledge, skills, and inspiration for each student to be successful in college, career, and life.” The single dominant theme of the CAP is rigor, specifically, rigorous academic standards, rigorous accountability standards and the rigorous pursuit of identifying and addressing the individual needs of students. While stakeholders identified the rigor of the Early College Program at Duarte High School, special-

at Maxwell as examples of rigor and areas of strength, rigor was also identified as a primary need desired by stakeholders. How to Keep Your Heart Healthy in the Heat

Ms. Jean Koehler, CLTC, CRPC® Financial Advisor | Business Financial Advisor Ameriprise Financial Services, Inc. 55 E. Huntington Dr. Ste 340 Arcadia, CA 91006 626-254-0455 jean.d.koehler@ampf.com www.ameripriseadvisors.com/jean.d.koehler

Summer brings warmer temperatures, and that means more people are enjoying the outdoors. But if you have heart failure, it’s important to know that heat can also put extra stress on your heart. Heart failure is a condition that signals the heart is already working harder to provide the body with enough blood, oxygen and nutrients. Heart failure doesn’t mean the heart has failed completely; however, it isn’t pumping effectively enough to meet the body’s demands. That’s why the hot summer temperatures can be particularly dangerous for heart failure patients. How to Stay Heart-Healthy in the Heat 1. Drink plenty of water before spending time outdoors and take regular water breaks during any physical activity. The Mayo Clinic recommends women drink an average of nine cups and men 13 cups of water per day. The American Heart Association suggests avoiding alcohol and caffeinated beverages as the temperatures climb, as they can contribute to dehydration.

2. Wear light clothing and avoid the outdoors during hottest times of the day. The sun is strongest between the hours of 12 p.m. and 3 p.m., so taking regular breaks in the shade will help your body avoid overheating. 3. In addition to making smarter choices while out in the hot summer temperatures, there are several other important ways that men and women with heart failure can live healthier lifestyles. One of the most important ways is to talk to your doctor about the best management strategies, which can include lifestyle changes, medications, medical devices or surgery. In the early stages of heart failure, a doctor may suggest lifestyle changes such as a low-sodium diet and regular exercise. As the disease progresses, medications or an implanted device, such as a cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) device, may be necessary to help the heart continue beating more efficiently. CRT technology resynchronizes the lower chambers of the heart by sending uniquely programmed electrical impulses to stimulate each ventricle to

beat in sync and offer optimal cardiac performance. A new technology, the CardioMEMS HF System, is designed to help physicians monitor pressures near the heart, which can increase weeks before fluid builds up and symptoms occur. This monitoring allows the doctor to proactively adjust medications to lower pressures, avoiding symptoms and possible hospitalizations. Late-stage heart failure therapy options include a left-ventricular assist device (LVAD), which is a mechanical heart pump that helps circulate blood throughout the body when the heart can’t effectively work on its own. Patients with heart failure should remember that with a few slight lifestyle adjustments, they can enjoy the summer and take advantage of the warmer weather. Patients should remember to make smart choices about how much time they spend outdoors in the heat, listen to their bodies, and stay up to date on the latest management strategies available for heart failure treatment. The Love of Reading: There Is Much More Than Literacy at Stake

The increase in gang activity led Mayor Garcetti to allocate an additional $5.5 million to this year’s budget to fight the trend. – Courtesy photo

How Parental Involvement May Prevent Gang Membership As the new school year begins, it’s important to consider the possibility that your child may be considering gang involvement, and if so, what you can do to help steer them in the right direction. There is no debate that strong family involvement can prevent the need for a sense of belonging often associated with gang membership. There are ways a parent can prevent their child from gang involvement. The first is to recognize that yes, your child could be a member. According to stats, there are 450 active gangs in the area with membership estimated at 45,000. If your child isn’t a member, he without a doubt knows someone who is; or has ties to the gang. Knowing the friends of your son or daughter is essential to fighting the gang’s hold. Notice the “daughter” acknowledgement above. Do not believe females are exempt from membership. Female divisions exist for the most notorious Los Angeles gangs. The Bloods’ have the Bloodlettes just as the Crips’ have the Cripettes. Pay attention not only to your son but your daughter as well. Many of the old school methods we were taught to look for to identify membership may or may not be in play in 2016. There is some debate if the wearing of colors and flashing of signs is still in use but is obviously something to take note. So what can you do to help your child gear away from gang membership? Your kid may not be interested in school in the least. However, many afternoon and evening sponsored programs lead to the discovery of their true passion. Many Olympians developed their skills through community organizations such as the Boys and Girls Club at little or zero cost. The key message - Keep them busy. It doesn’t matter what they do as long as they are productive. “It is also very important to realize that schoolbased programs are unlikely to reach kids who are at the greatest risk of joining gangs: kids who have dropped out of or are not fully engaged in school. To expect schoolbased programs to reach kids in schools with very high dropout rates is unrealistic,” states the National Institute of Justice. According to the LAPD,

“Gangs are not a new phenomenon. During the last three years, there were over 16,398 verified violent gang crimes in the City of Los Angeles. These include 491 homicides, nearly 7,047 felony assaults, approximately 5,518 robberies and just under 98 rapes.” The increase in gang activity led Mayor Garcetti to allocate an additional $5.5 million to this year’s budget to fight the trend. Obviously the government will do what it can to prevent the damage this subculture creates. However, it is the parents who face the ultimate challenge considering involvement generally begins between the ages of 11 and 14. Perhaps the best way to detour your child from gang involvement is to sit with them and discuss this ABC 7 site. Simply entitled Gang Violence, http://abc7.com/ tag/gang-violence/ - it demonstrates the ruthlessness of the lifestyle. Show your child the clip of the 10 year old Boyle Heights girl killed in gang cross fire. Explain to them with a $50,000 reward offer individuals involved will be turned in if not by the community by a member looking solely at the money.

Getting your kids ready for school goes beyond outfitting them with pencils, pens and new clothes," said Author and Publisher David Bruce Smith. "The most important 'gift' you can give your child is a love for reading." Smith said that reading is elemental to the education process but, he adds, there is much more than literacy at stake for young learners. "To paraphrase a character in a movie I once saw, the key to all knowledge comes in words." Smith, who co-founded the Grateful American Book Prize, points out that a wellread child becomes a productive citizen. Reading also promotes curiosity, which is a cornerstone of success in later life. He has suggestions for parents who want to motivate their children as they prepare for this coming semester: Don't censor them. Let them read what they want. Parental rebellion causes young adult defiance. Even internationally acclaimed author Neil Gaiman wrote, “You don't discourage chil-

dren from reading because you feel they are reading the wrong thing. Fiction you do not like is the gateway drug to other books you may prefer them to read. And not everyone has the same taste as you. Stoke an interest in reading. For example, if a child favors science fiction, introduce him/her to the great Isaac Asimov or Arthur C. Clark.” For kids who hate the conventional ways of reading, there are now electronic alternatives such as audio books and Whispersync, a

technology which enable users to switch back and forth between a Kindle book and an audio narration. Finally, take your children to the local library, and, literally, show them the world in which they live. "Libraries are about Freedom; Freedom to read, freedom of ideas, freedom of communication. They are about education (which is not a process that finishes the day we leave school or university), about entertainment, about making safe spaces, and about access to information," said Gaiman. Finally, according to Smith there's proof now that reading is good for the mind-and the body. A new study in the journal of Social Science & Medicine, reveals that people who read live longer than those who never engaged. As for the 2016 Grateful American Book Prize, the judges are poring through more than 100 books that were submitted for consideration and will be ready to announce a winner on Oct. 6 at a ceremony to be held at the Library of Congress.

Opinion: Not Good Enough? By Darlene Papa Lifeline for Pets When people decide to adopt a dog or a cat, they usually have in mind to adopt what they think is their “perfect pet.” Almost always, people want a cute kitten or puppy, or a young adult. Some even want a particular breed, gender, or color. Rarely do they look for a senior pet, and almost never do they ask for a special needs animal, even though both of these types often only need a special diet or just a bit extra attention. Most no-kill shelters have both older and special needs animals. They wait and wait for their forever, loving homes, but they wait in vain. Why is that? Afraid of dealing with a pet who may not last much longer? Unwilling to pay for increased medical bills? Frightened of having to monitor and accommodate the pet’s special condition? Embarrassed to be seen with a pet who is “not good enough”? An older, or special needs animal can offer just as much, if not more, love, loyalty, and companionship. Adopting a “less than perfect” pet can be extremely rewarding. It is a win-win decision that not

only helps the animal, but is a family’s teachable moment about what it means to pay it forward. There are even shelter programs to put senior animals with senior adults, and special needs pets with special needs children. How wonderful is that for, say, a deaf child to have a deaf pet! Not good enough? Take the story of little kitten, Hero. When adorable tabby babies Hero and his sister, Echo, were rescued by Lifeline for Pets, they discovered that Hero’s two back legs were deformed. One was bent up and back, and the other stuck out sideways. Consultation with the vet determined that no surgery needed to be done, if ever, because sweet Hero gets along just fine, and even uses the litter box quite well. He needs no meds. Why, then, are Hero and Echo still not adopted? Likely because he “looks different” with his legs. Hero does not know this. He is smart, spunky, and moves around quickly and with confidence. As long as he has something to grip with his front paws he can pull himself up a cat tree! If only he and his sister could find a home that can overlook his handicap! They are both so lovable, and totally deserve

a forever home. Not good enough? Adopting, loving, and caring for a dog or cat that is just a little “less than perfect” has wonderful rewards: According to Joyce Darrell and Michael Dickerson, founders of Pets With Disabilities, "Disabled animals show a special kind of devoted loyalty to their caregivers, so if you have room in home and in your heart, adopt a disabled animal. It just might be the best pet you will ever have.” Not good enough? Still uncertain about adopting a senior or a special needs animal? Please visit this link to read a short article on “Adopting a Special Needs Dog,” which also applies to a special needs cat. The writer speaks of the unbelievable joy that a special needs animal brings to one’s life. http:// www.dogster.com/lifestyle/ adopting-a-special-needs-dog Call a shelter. Ask about their seniors and special needs animals. Add just one of these beautiful souls to your family, and see how huge your heart will open! You will need that big heart to store all the extra love and devotion and memories you will receive! That is “more than good enough!”

Exercising With God’s Help By Dorothy Denne

I

was talking to myself the other day. I said, "Self, if you are calling the column Dorothy's Place, you should do all the writing and not use an Internet goodie occasionally." Then, just before deadline, the following came in and was too good to resist. Enjoy. Most seniors never get enough exercise. In His wisdom God decreed that seniors become forgetful so they would have to search for their glasses, keys and other things thus doing more walking. And God looked down and saw that it was good. Then God saw there was another need. In His wisdom He made seniors lose coordination so they would drop things requiring them to bend, reach and stretch. And God looked down and saw

that it was good. Then God considered the function of bladders and decided seniors would have additional calls of nature requiring more trips to the bathroom, thus providing more exercise. God looked down and saw that it was good. So, if you find as you age, you are getting up and down more, remember it's God's will. It is all in your best interest even though you mutter under your breath. And, while you are contemplating the aging process, here are nine important things to remember: #9 Death is the number 1 killer in the world. #8 Life is sexually transmitted. #7 Good health is merely the slowest possible rate at which one can die. #6 Men have two motivations: hunger and hanky

panky, and they can't tell them apart. If you see a gleam in his eyes, make him a sandwich. #5 Give a person a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach that person to use the Internet and they won't bother you for weeks, months, maybe years. #4 Health nuts are going to feel stupid someday, lying in the hospital dying of nothing. #3 All of us could take a lesson fromn the weather. It pays no attention to criticism. #2 In the 60's people took LSD to make the world weird. Now the world is weird and people take Prozac to make it normal. #1 Life is like a jar of jalapeno peppers. What you do today may be a burning issue tomorrow. Please share this wisdom with others while I go to the bathroom.

The successful bidder will be required to remit a total deposit in the form of certified check or cashier’s check made out to the Secretary of HUD that equals 10% of the winning bid amount that must be presented to the auctioneer conducting the sale before the bidding is closed. The deposit by the winning bidder is nonrefundable. The remainder of the purchase price must be delivered as instructed by the auctioneer within 30 days of the completed sale or at such other time as the Secretary may determine for good cause shown, time being of the essence. If the high bidder closes the sale prior to the expiration of any extension period, the unused portion of the extension fee shall be applied toward the amount due. If the high bidder is unable to close the sale within the required period, or within any extensions of time granted by the Secretary, the high bidder may be required to forfeit the cash deposit or, at the election of the foreclosure commissioner after consultation with the HUD representative, will be liable to HUD for any costs incurred as a result of such failure. Therefore, the Foreclosure Commissioner will issue a Deed to the purchaser(s) upon receipt of the entire purchase price in accordance with the terms of the sale as provided herein. HUD does not guarantee that the property will be vacant. The scheduled foreclosure sale shall be cancelled or adjourned if it is established, by documented written application of the mortgagor to the Foreclosure Commissioner not less than 3 days before the date of sale, or otherwise, that the default or defaults upon which the foreclosure is based did not exist at the time of service of this notice of default and foreclosure sale, or all amounts due under the mortgage agreement are tendered to the Foreclosure Commissioner, in the form of a certified or cashier’s check payable to the Secretary of HUD, before public auction of the property is completed. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call, 916-939-0772 for information regarding the trustee’s sale or visit this Internet Web site, www. nationwideposting.com, for information regarding the sale of this property, using the file number assigned to this case, T.S.# 9448-9156. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in

the telephone information or on the internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. If the Trustee is unable to convey title for any reason, the successful bidder’s sole and exclusive remedy shall be the return of monies paid to the Trustee and the successful bidder shall have no further recourse.
