There are so many wonderful events happening in Long Beach that the Edge-U-Cator enjoys sharing with our reader so I don’t usually get the opportunity to follow up on a story that you only read in The Edge.

But here’s one: Starting Sunday, the Legacy Farmers Market will be making its debut at the Seaport Marina Hotel located at 6400 E. Pacific Coast Highway. Right now, the Legacy Farmers Market will have only three vendors, but what vendors they are: Roland Tamai of Tamai Farms, Arnulfo Garcia of Garcia Family Farms and Pete Siracusa of J&P West Coast Seafood.

The Edge wrote about the controversy surrounding these three in our July 6 issue.

Without reason, the three men were told they are no longer welcome at the Sunday farmers market held at the Alamitos Bay Marina. That farmers market is run by the South Coast Interfaith Council. The men were told they would each receive by registered mail, a letter explaining why they were being expelled. They still haven’t gotten that letter.

Lee Ostendorf, director of the Local Harvest farmers market, made room for the men at her Wednesday market located at Appian Way and Nieto Avenue, but now they have negotiated with the hotel to return to Sundays.

“We had customers come by on Wednesdays and at our Lakewood location on Saturday and ask us to find a place close by,” Tamai said Monday evening. “It’s nothing permanent; we are going to be there for just three to five months.

They are friendly over there and since it’s private property, we didn’t have to go through the city. I’m hoping we will sign a lease on Wednesday.”

Tamai has lots of in-season vegetables to offer and he’s hoping people will cross the street to come visit the men who started coming to Long Beach almost three decades ago.

“I think we will get quite a lot of people there,” Tamai said. “Farmers can do markets wherever they like, so if people want to come over, that is fine with us.”

THROUGH PUBLIC ARTWORK Vice Mayor Rex Richardson Brings Communities Together in North Long Beach

ublic artwork can be more than just pleasing to the eye - local artists and public officials are proving that, by using a series of murals to try to inspire and bring positive change to a community where gangs and homelessness once prevailed.

In a part of the city where graffiti and vandalism once dominated buildings and public areas, community members of north Long Beach are working together to replace those spaces with public art. As part of the Creative Corridor Challenge, a series of projects are being designed by District 9 members to engage the community and clean up the corridors.

There are now seven new murals in the area.

On July 30, the mural artists, community members and stakeholders came together for the first Creative Corridor Mural Arts Tour. The artwork was presented by newly-elected vice mayor Rex Richardson, who held an additional job title for the day: tour guide.

“Nine months ago, we issued a challenge to the arts community and our local residents to activate our corridors through civic engagement and creativity,” Richardson says in a news release. “I’m proud to unveil seven transformational and catalytic installations that have made a tremendous impact on our neighborhoods. The success of our community’s revitalization has to integrate art, bring people together, and serve a purpose.”

mural artists. Long Beach Transit provided a bus to drive participants to the different mural locations. Along each stop, Richardson introduced each artist to present and explain the work in their own words.

Mary “Mer” Young, created a colorful mural of eyes near the intersection of Atlantic Avenue and Artesia Boulevard. According to Richardson, her mural has received the most attention.

“It was actually designed to uplift and ignite – a spark of hope to a neighborhood that is on its way to be revived – thank you Rex, our councilmember,” Young said. “It’s meant as a beacon that brings vibrancy to the eyes of people to a community and to a commonplace street intersection. It was inspired by the notion of having spiritual guides, such as guardian angels. Guardians are said to be put on assignment to enlighten, protect, and guide a person or a country. The concept that an angel can bring comfort and support, in accordance with the laws of the universe and not interfere with one’s free will, was a visual expression I felt was needed and was thought out for this particular sight.” “[Public art] adds an aesthetic improvement to the daily lives of residents that live here, and it’s actually created a dialogue within the neighborhood about a significance,” she said. “And though recently it had a minor tag, I strongly still feel that it serves as a deterrent for graffiti and vandalism.”

Richardson says that the murals will soon have anti-graffiti coating on, to make it easier for cleaning up if someone attempts to vandalize the art.

cel “Sel” Blanco featured his mural called “Dream.” It covers one of the walls of a thrift store at 1639 E. Artesia Blvd.

“It was a great honor to be chosen by Rex Richardson for the wall, it’s always great to be acknowledged for your work,” Blanco said. “But for this one, [Richardson] asked for something for the community to be inspired.

For me I always think of kids, to inspire kids.

I thought of the word “Dream,” and to go for your dreams. Like the kids here climbing the tree, taking a leap, maybe a leap of faith,” Blanco said, explaining his artwork.

There is talk of painting around the entire building of the thrift store, also updating and modernizing it, Richardson said.

“All of that came because art was the instigator, it was the catalyst for allowing this change in this area,” he says.

The thrift store is not the only area in north Long Beach facing changes. Across the street from Young’s mural on Artesia Boulevard, Richardson announced that there soon might be a new restaurant-based development on a currently empty lot. The proposition was discussed within city council last week, coming to an agreement on which businesses will be a part of the development.

Just a few blocks away from Blanco’s mural on Artesia Boulevard is a mural by Dog Knit Sweater – a Long Beach artist duo. On the wall of 6401 Downey Ave. is their mural “Run, Skip, Jump Long Beach,” a piece that artist Daniel Miller says is inspired by the hustle and bustle of Long Beach.

Daisy Rosas is the other partner of Dog Knit Sweater, and is also an intern at the Arts Council for Long Beach. Rosas says this is the team’s first time creating a public art project this big. Upon the arrival of the mural tour, Dog Knit Sweater were still putting finishing touches on their piece – with paint appropriately covering their clothes.

“It’s been such a positive thing for me because I wasn’t sure how public artwork affected people before I actually created a public artwork,” Rosas said. “People will come by and say really nice things to us and it becomes part of the community.”

Rosas and Miller have been creating

artwork together since 2012, but the two have been a couple for longer than that.

“It’s a special thing, a lot of people tell us they don’t know how we make it work as a couple and also an artistic team, because it can be a tricky thing to collaborate with someone that you live with and you love,” Rosas says. “We make a lot of harsh decisions so if we’re working on a painting and we have different ideas, we’ll use this sort of process of elimination of being really honest with each other.”

Aside from the Arts Council, another one of the other major contributors to this project is the Squeeze Art Collective. The newly-started nonprofit is on its way to becoming a 501c3, which will allow for more funds to organize more public art events in the city, says Squeeze Art Collective co-founder Katie Phillips.

In addition to being co-founder, Phillips also create the mural at 1639 E. South St. It is called “Life of Possibilities,” she says, to represent all the choices and chances you have as a child, things that you’re going to do in your life.

The other co-founder of Squeeze Art Collective is Tracy Negrete, a Long Beach local artist. Her mural was also a part of the tour, titled “Together We Soar,” which is at 6900 Long Beach Blvd. Negrete’s mural was also focused on inspiring children.

“We were all children once and I think it’s really important to inspire children, I was inspired by art as a child,” she says. “So I take that and kind of run with it. If we involve [children] and inspire them, they’re going to contribute to the community.”

As many of the other artists have said, during their time working on their murals, many members of the community wanted to become involved with the project. During Negrete’s time span of six weekends, she says that children from the area became very interested and helped with her artwork.

“When I first was granted this mural I only expected to have a few volunteers, but it ended up being the whole community coming out and helping out everyday,” she says. “So in the result, it’s everybody’s mural.”

I have witnessed on many occasions bike riders on sidewalks causing pedestrians (mostly mothers walking their kids to school) to move onto the grass to let them by. I’d be more than willing to move onto the grass for a young bike rider but when it’s an adult, who should know better, it definitely feels like an inconvenience.” - LB Dog Mom so maddening to be walking along A:Ittheissidewalk and out of nowhere a bike

whizzes past you, nearly running you down or forcing you to move off of the sidewalk for an oncoming bike, especially when you’re walking home with your Holé Molé taco order.

It’s also scary to ride a bike in traffic. It is perfectly legal to ride your bike on the sidewalk in Long Beach in most cases. The only places it is not allowed is in a business district, bridges, along schools, churches, playgrounds, senior centers and near the railing on bluff park. You’d think common courtesy would be enough but as it is with vehicular traffic, so it goes with bikes. It’s like a transportation food chain out there; trucks to buses to cars to bikes to skaters to pedestrians. Vehicles need to share the road with cyclists so they feel safe enough to use the road instead of the sidewalk. You take your life in your hands when you ride a bike on any of our major traffic corridors, like Seventh Street, so riding on sidewalks is a much safer prospect. Long Beach has no shortage of wonderful side streets complete with stop signs and traffic signals. If you’re on your bike, try taking one of those. The city continues to increase the

amount of bike lanes, so maybe some day we will be both one of the most walkable and bike friendly cities in the country. It could happen, right?

Long Beach is on pace to soon have the most mileage of official bike lanes in the country Courtesy of Bike Long Beach recently purchased by Millworks Long Beach, and although they have not announced any official plans on how they intend on using the space, the future looks bright. In the meantime there is no shortage of music festivals, from folk to reggae, bringing bands to town all summer long, and TONS of small clubs to see great music every night.

music venues; Big John’s, The Foothill, Fenders, Bogarts, and the Long Beach Arena – which seats up to 14,000 people – all featured touring up-and-coming, big name bands. The only one still standing is the Long Beach Arena and it seems perfectly content to fill the space with boat shows and religious conventions. Fenders slowly became a place for quiñceaneras before literally going down in flames. The Foothill was torn down and developed into townhouses. Bogarts fell to redevelopment of Marina Pacifica and The Vault closed after the sudden death of the owner.

A potential hardship of running a mid-sized venue has to do with a radius clause from tour promoters that can make it difficult to book touring bands. The radius clause stipulates that a performer, for a certain length of time (30-90 days and possibly an entire year) prior to or following an appearance at a concert or festival, must not hold concerts at other locations within a certain radius of the city where they are to perform (typically 25-50 miles). With Long Beach firmly in the middle of Los Angeles and Orange County, a band would have to choose one show in Long Beach versus two shows, one in L.A. and one in O.C. There is hope on the horizon though. Plans were announced for redevelopment of the area surrounding the Queen Mary that would include an amphitheater, and The Vault was www.theedgelb.com

EVERYTHING YOU’RE DYING TO SEE THIS HALLOWEEN Midsummer Scream Halloween Festival Brings All Things Scary to Long Beach

F

or all of the Halloween addicts out there, October always feels like the shortest month of the year. We spend our time waiting, year after year, for the festivities of our favorite holiday to begin. But this year, the Midsummer Scream Halloween Festival made the next “fix” feel that much closer.

Haunting the halls of the Long Beach Convention Center last weekend were zombies, ghosts, monsters and more – all in an effort to help Halloween fans make this year’s October the best yet.

“It’s two days of Halloween madness packed into one summer weekend,” says David Markland, executive director of the festival and CreepyLA blogger.

“We have everything you want for Halloween,” he says. “We have a gazillion-hundred attractions, at least 20 different interactive exhibits including about 10 haunted walkthrough attractions that have been built especially on site for here.”

Even outside of the mazes there were people waiting around every corner of the Convention Center trying to scare people.

Among those were Ashlynne Dae and Reagan Kathryn, dressed as two nurses from the movie “Silent Hill.” “[Guests] really love the Silent Hill nurses and it has been so great being able to walk

around and be kind of creepy,” Kathryn says.

“And normally we do things without masks, but this has been a completely different experience.”

Dae and Kathryn have been at many conventions before dressing up in cosplay outfits, but this is the first time for a horror or Halloween themed event.

“I’ve decided that there’s like different types of personalities who are scared,” Kathryn says.

“Like some people will just not look at you, or they’ll just stare at you if you’re walking past them and just say nothing. And you have another person who will get scared and be like “Oh my god, that’s so cool!” and you have the the third party…”

“The runners! The runners are my favorite because you can chase after them all creepy like,” laughed Dae. “It was leg day yesterday for sure.”

With around 200 vendors and three stages with entertainment, including theme park presentations, discussions about haunted attractions, and theatrical performances, the festival took over the entire Convention Center. Vendors and booths included everything from Halloween make-up lessons, to paranormal investigators, and several theme parks revealing their new Halloween attractions.

“Everybody hopefully at the end of this weekend will have their Halloween season mapped out for their whole October,” says Markland.

In Long Beach alone it’s easy to have a schedule full of Halloween fun this October.

Coming to Rainbow Harbor Oct. 14-16 is the Long Beach Zombie Fest, which will be full of music, guts, blood, horror and more.

“It’s a three day event so there’s a lot on each day,” says Tracy Perry, organizer of the Long Beach Zombie Fest. “We have a one-ofa-kind interactive haunted maze with a scare zone, so you actually have a containment maze where you can actually be in a scare activity for 15 minutes and actually be a part of the action.”

In this new maze, Perry says the containment maze will allow guests to volunteer and scare people themselves.

“It allows people to be that scare actor for 15 minutes, and I mean who doesn’t want to be on the giving end? I would rather be on the giving end than the receiving end, personally,” she says.

Although this will be the ninth year for the Long Beach Zombie Fest, Perry says this year is almost like an entirely new event with three whole days of events instead of just the traditional Zombie Walk.

“Now it’s just a matter of making it to where everybody can participate in it. We don’t isolate anyone out, so that’s how we came up with the different things for the day’s,” Perry said.

Another terrifying experience in Long Beach this fall is the Queen Mary’s Dark Harbor, which will begin Sept. 29 and ends Oct. 31. The rumored haunted ship will have attractions in and around the Queen Mary itself, with many of the mazes focused on documented sightings of the paranormal.

Among these spirits is “Scary Mary,” the ship’s youngest soul who has supposedly haunted the ship since drowning in the poolroom in 1952.

“Before her death she was a sweet and playful child. In the spirit world, Scary Mary is in search of a playmate… a living soul that can join her for eternity. She can be spotted throughout Dark Harbor, but the poolroom of Submerged is her playroom,” says the Dark Harbor website.

Queen Mary’s Dark Harbor is great for the traditional Halloween attractions, but Matthew Schulz of the ship’s paranormal investigation team takes it to the next level.

He is the host of the Queen Mary ParaTours, which takes guests to well known locations for paranormal activity and lets them become a part of the investigations.

“My goal is for everybody to take home evidence to review and hopefully find something anomalous and want to send it in to me as a submission,” Schulz says. “And I’ll review it, edit it, always keep a contact with our guests. We have lots of great things that come in. A lot of it is documentation of group experiences that we had during that tour. I publish on my Facebook page and website, lots of evidence. And none of it, for the most part, is recorded by me. I stay out of that loop completely, it’s all submissions from guests.”

In addition to being a part of paranormal investigations at the Queen Mary, Schulz is also the founder of ParaXplorer Project - a paranormal investigation team based out of southern California.

“There’s a rabid fan base of Queen Mary enthusiasts, especially with the paranormal.

Of course, as a fellow paranormal investigator my goal is to take care of those people, as fellow community members,” Schulz says.

Markland says that aside from learning about Halloween related products and attractions, he put together the Midsummer Scream Fest for Halloween lovers to get together and just have fun. He has done other Halloween-related events in parts of Los Angeles, but this is the first time in Long Beach.

“I mean Halloween fans, the people who are into this stuff, are just the best,” Markland says. “Like the make-up, and I don’t know, it’s a different energy because we’ve come down here and they haven’t had anything like this, we’re bringing in a new group of people. But the crowds, I mean Halloween fans across the United States are all the same in terms of just awesome and creative people who love interesting things that are off the norm.”

DIVERSITY MAKES ITS WAY INTO THE WORLD OF COMIC BOOKS The Latino Comics Expo returns to Long Beach this weekend

HAM! BIFF! BANG! CHINGAO! The Latino Comics Expo (LCX) is making its heroic return to the Museum of Latin American Art in all its pop art glory come August 6 and 7.

“This is our fifth anniversary, second at MOLAA,” says Javier Hernandez, indie comics creator and Latino Comics Expo co-founder.

“Me and my friend Ricardo Padilla, we were just talking one time about Mexican museums, then comics, and we thought, what about

a comic expo for us? A Latino comics expo?”

Hernandez and Padilla, a Bay Area patron of the arts, created the two-day event to spotlight Latino artists, writers, and culture, hoping to diversify a rather un-colorful comics industry.

Hernandez says he and fellow artists/writers at his expo stand out from mainstream comic publishers due to their counter-programming of sorts. Whereas mainstream companies like DC and Marvel tirelessly attempt to reinvent their characters, Hernandez and company have a fountain of perpetual ideas – their unique upbringing and back-

grounds, not beholden to comic book continuity or company mandates. Drawing upon the art of hagiography, Dia de los Muertos’ sugar skull theatricality, and Aztec imagery, writers and artists at the LCX use whatever ethnic threads are unique to them to weave an amalgamation of imagery and storytelling.

“Yeah, it’s cool seeing Latinos working on things like Iron man, Spider-Man, Batman,” Hernandez says. “That’s fine, but there’s others like us doing exciting things with a cultural bent. Amongst our group is very different work. Autobiographical, historical, whimsical, humor, kids, superheroes, horror, it’s the whole gamut of stories you can find.”

Hernandez mentions his own comic book series “El Muerto,” (adapted as a film in 2007 starring Wilmer Valderrama in the titular role) about a man that gets abducted by the Aztec god of death during Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead for all the gringos out there).

He also mentions another culturally-rich comic by Rafael Navarro named “Sonambulo,” which mixes hard-boiled noir with Lucha Libre, telling a story about a masked Mexican wrestler who supernaturally takes up the role of a private eye.

The Latino Comics Expo has been a “battle for representation” for Hernandez in which he’s grateful for MOLAA’s “world-class” partnership. The expo, like most iconic comic heroes, started with humble beginnings.

Born in San Francisco’s miniature-sized Cartoon Art Museum, the expo’s inaugural event housed just 15 tables of artists and writers. After learning how to improve upon their first go-round, Hernandez and Padilla put the word out to other like-minded Latino and Latina creators about their concept.

The news spread and their (Social) Justice League began to form. However, much like Bruce Banner and his purple sweat pants, the little comic expo that could soon grew and stretched too big for that space. The expo moved from the Cartoon Art Museum to San Jose State’s Martin Luther King Jr. library, and finally landed at MOLAA which gave the

expo the big platform it always wanted. This year, the event will be the expo’s biggest, now housing 75 tables worth of artists and writers in addition to a slew of activities.

“I love seeing these types of shows – Latino, Black, Asian, Queer conventions,” Hernandez says. “People think it’s not inclusive and seperate, but no, it’s putting a spotlight on these cultures. For one weekend, you put the shows out and the fans show up.”

Those fans, Hernandez adds, often come back a year or two later down the line and debut at shows themselves. Although it’s entitled the Latino Comics Expo, Hernandez assures that people of all creeds and color are welcome.

“I’ve had people ask me, ‘Oh, can I go? I’m a white guy,’ ” Hernandez says. “Anyone can come to the Expo. The content and creators is what we strive for in diversity, but everyone is welcome. We want to educate people about who we are.”

Events at this year’s expo include screenings, panels, arts and crafts, meet and greets, a Wacom tablet giveaway, lowriders, food trucks, and (new this year) a cosplay contest with prizes.

“We’re hoping to see Latino-themed characters,” Hernandez says. “There’s Zorro, El Chavo del Ocho, El Muerto. Then, there’s these spins on characters. I’ve seen Bat-Cholo and Super Vato, Han Cholo, Princess Loca. Doctor Who might be Doctor Quien, who knows!”

The Latino Comics Expo takes place August 6 and 7. The event is free with paid admission on Saturday, and free on Sunday thanks to Target’s sponsorship. Guests include comics legend Jaime Hernandez from “Love and Rockets” fame, Raul the Third, author of “Lowriders in Space,” and Candy Briones, author of “Taco El Gato.”

t’s hard for Bob Seagren not to get excited when the Summer Olympics arrive every four years.

Seagren, a two-time Olympic medalist, won gold in the pole vault during the 1968 summer games in Mexico City.

So, while hundreds of America’s finest athletes prepare to compete against the world’s best in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil starting on Friday, Seagren knows the pressure each athlete is facing.

“It’s the pinnacle of our sport, at least for track and field,” Seagren says. “It’s very difficult to make the Olympic team.”

When the former pole vaulter was competing, the USA had won gold in every Olympics in the pole vault. But Seagren also knows the feeling of finishing second when he took silver in the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, ending the Americans’ run of gold in the pole vault.

During his time, Seagran has set the world record more than 10 times, but one thing beats holding the record.

“Nothing beats winning that gold medal,” Seagren says. “It’s coveted; it’s the one thing any Olympic sport athlete strives for.”

While this year’s Olympians are feeling the pressure, he knows that they will get the job done and there’s a reason they are there.

“In Mexico, I was pretty focused,” Seagren says. “I had a job to do and fortunately I didn’t have to wait around very much until I competed. I think most athletes develop that tunnel vision – you’re there for one thing and you’re focused on it.”

This year’s Games have been put under a microscope with issues of water quality and the Olympic Village living quarters. Seagren believes that everything will come together.

“It seems like every four years it like it’s the same thing,” Seagren says. “You listen to all the news about the troubles and tribulations of each of the host cities every four years and it seems like the same thing all over again, but yet the Olympics come and there’s not too

much of a hiccup.”

In his first Olympics, Seagren not only competed but was a witness to Tommie Smith and John Carlos standing on top of the medal podium, bowing their heads while raising a black-gloved fist during the National Anthem.

In November of 1968, Seagren told Life Magazine. “I didn’t think it was proper. If it were not for the United States, they wouldn’t be here. If they don’t like the United States, they can always leave.”

Fifty years later, the man who splits time between Long Beach and Park City, Utah, has a different opinion: “Many have used the Olympic stage to make their causes known,” Seagren said in reflection. “For good and bad.”

The former pole vaulter will be watching when the Olympics start Friday and will be keeping a close eye on the track and field team.

“I don’t follow the track and field events as much as I used to,” Seagren says. “But once they start I will be glued to my TV.” After his competing days were over, Sea-

gren ventured into different areas including acting and owning restaurants. Now, he is the president and CEO of Run Racing, a company that was started in 2001.

“I had a travel agency and I dabbled as an actor,” Seagren says. “I was trying to find what I really enjoyed doing and kept me excited.”

The Olympic medalist found that excitement when he had his own marketing company. Since then, Run Racing has helped the Long Beach Marathon thrive since taking on the responsibilities of organizing the marathon and his company has grown from one event with 450 participants to multiple events

with over 50,000 participants.

“When the opportunity came up to take over the Long Beach Marathon in 2000, I investigated it some and I was fairly interested in it,” Seagren says. “So, I put a small group of people together and we took the event over.”

Since taking over the event, Seagren has enjoyed every moment working on the marathon while seeing athletes push themselves to the limit.

“It keeps me associated with athletics to some extent,” Seagren says. “you have to plan and prepare and it’s a great feeling when everyone shows up and has a great time.”

THE LEGEND OF BIG LLOU JOHNSON The emcee of this summer’s New Blues Festival III is a big man with a bigger personality

e walks up the stairs in measured steps leading to the “Blue Room” at The Attic, a local Cajun-Creole restaurant.

He is summer ready in a cream, button-up shirt, slacks and a straw hat; a big guy with a velvety voice.

He is Big Llou Johnson.

Shame on you if you don’t know Big Llou.

You should.

This renaissance man of the blues is a man of many talents: singer, vocalist, producer, actor, voice over actor, and event host to name a few.

So what’s new for Big Llou? The smooth voice (for 14 years) of B.B. King’s Bluesville Sirius Satellite XM radio will be headlining this year’s “Let Blues Cruise” which he exclusively disclosed to The Edge, he’s working on an album entitled “The Legend of Big Llou” coming out later this year and, oh yeah, he’s been chosen to emcee the New Blues Festival in Long Beach September 3-4 at El Dorado Regional Park.

Johnson will be performing alongside his bandmates Russ Green, Mike Wheeler, Ronny Hicks, Ricky Nelson, Dejuan Austin, Charles Pryor, Keith Stewart and Armirris Palmore.

Known for his showmanship, Johnson says what makes him a great entertainer is not focusing on just one thing, but rather the entirety of a performance.

“It is not enough to sing,” he says. “You’re also a performer. You are giving the audience a show.”

He’s honed his craft by dabbling in a bit of everything.

He began a talent agency 15 years ago, formed a gospel group “Phava,” toured internationally, performed with the Oak Park Concert Chorale, and acted in several films including Barbershop, George Lucas’ Strange Magic and Let’s Go to Prison.

There are two things that Big Llou is looking forward to at this year’s New Blues Fest: performing in the eclectic city of Long Beach and seeing Bobby Rush and Kingfish, whom he describes as “a young blues man with an old soul,” perform at the festival as well.

Johnson says he enjoys performing in Long Beach for one simple reason.

“Because it’s by the beach,” he says. “In Chicago we have lakes so wide you can’t see the other side. But there’s nothing like the ocean.”

His love for singing started at an early age in a church on the west side of Chicago, his hometown. There, his love of music evolved leading him to play tenor saxophone and sing in a band that he and other bandmembers created in high school.

That is where he discovered his knack for showmanship after one unforgettable high school performance.

Everything about Big Llou is “big,” his voice, his performing style, his stature and his heart.

He says “being an artist is about giving and receiving . . . but more about giving.”

Philanthropist is another description that fits Johnson rather well. He believes in “paying it forward.” His Hall of Fame Tribute Jam and Fundraiser is still growing exponentially, with proceeds benefiting retired blues performers and musicians, the Blues Hall of Fame, as well as blues music educational programs that keep the love of this genre alive.

His musical influences are as varied as is his sound, from Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra to Howlin’ Wolf, Isaac Hayes and Barry White.

“It’s a feeling that cannot be captured anywhere else,” he says, especially since Chicago and blues have a long term, loving relationship, dating from the great migration of African-Americans from the southern cities to northern industrialized cities looking for better socio-economic opportunities and introducing classic jazz into Chicago.

And for Johnson, history is important. Just as the music he plays was influenced by the past, so is his persona. He remembers where he came from every time he sees the name Big Llou written or hears it spoke. There is a special reason for that extra “L” after all.

“When I joined the performers’ union there was already someone with my given name, Lou Johnson,” he says, “so I stuck an extra “L” onto Lou in honor of my mother Lora, dad Louis and grandmother Lillie. So that every time I saw my name in lights, I’d have my ancestors right there with me, who made it all possible.”

REINVENTING THE HUMAN BILLBOARD AArrow sign spinners in Long Beach put a different spin on advertising

W

e’ve all seen them.

Standing on a street corner in blistering heat with their headphones drowning out the traffic. They can’t help but catch your eye. They dance (like really dance) twirl, flip and launch giant signs into the air, begging for your attention. They’re professional advertisers who have transformed the simplicity of being a human billboard into an impressive mixture of acrobatics, dexterity, athleticism and dance.

“It’s more than just spinning signs,” says Oshay Henderson, an AArrow Advertising recruiter and sign-spinner in Long Beach.

“We call that the Helicopter Tripod,” he says.

This is just one trick in an ever-growing “tricktionary,” which according to AArrow general manager Christian Altamirano, has more than 400 certified tricks already. Each one is written down in detail for sign spinners to reference, thanks to Justin Brown.

“We call [Brown] the Michael Jordan of sign spinning,” Altamirano says. “Back in the day he was told if he invented new tricks he could get promoted and paid more, so he came up with a bunch of new tricks.”

“Honestly, people think you’re out there spinning a sign, probably doing it for free,” Henderson admits with resentment in his voice. “They think you’re not doing anything with your life, it’s ridiculous man!”

Founded by Max Durovic and Michael Kenny in 2002, AArrow Advertising has grown beyond its wildest dreams. Originally a way to pass the time when they were busy spinning their own signs, their competitiveness led them to continually get bigger and bolder on their own street corners.

“It’s probably my favorite story about this company,” Altamirano says. “They basically competed back and forth across from each other making up new things until they figured

out they could come together and form a company hiring other people to do crazy tricks.”

Now, AArrow can be found in more than 20 cities across the U.S. as well as various locations internationally. In Long Beach, business has been a bit slower than other markets but they are currently in the process of increasing recruiting in the area.

Henderson manages the recruiting for Long Beach. He also runs their practices.

“We meet every Tuesday and Thursday at a park,” he says. “Then we’ll usually stretch and go over some tricks.”

At a recent practice, over 20 spinners showed up. There was the newbie, Alex Serra, who is slowly but surely refining his own style. A woman, Jessica Tropp, is arguably the most reliable of the group with more than 1,000 hours spinning in 2015 and over 700 hours so far this year. Then, there was veteran spinner Stan Alpert, who started spinning a decade ago and has the scars to prove that this skill is learned through trial and error.

They affectionately call them “spinjuries.”

“Everyone has theirs,” Alpert says. “I’ve had my nose reset, a broken pinkie and a punctured lip.”

Shift running anywhere from four to eight hours are another workplace hazard when spinners have to constantly battle with summer heat.

The lumps and bruises are worth it though, because as Henderson loves to say, “it’s more than just spinning a sign.” In fact, it’s much more.

At the end of practice, the spinners hold a miniature competition. Each spinner is given

30 seconds to showcase their routine and then judged on execution, style and technique. There are backflips, handstands and signs spinning on heads as competitors and colleagues laugh and yell, trying to pump each other up.

But this was only the tip of the iceberg.

Every three months, there is a regional competition in North Hollywood, pitting the best 50 sign spinners on the west coast against each other. Winners from this contest will advance to the ultimate stage for a spinner: Las Vegas.

Far removed from a street corner, 100 spinners compete on Freemont Street for the chance at $1000 and bragging rights with thousands of spectators watching. Seriously, this is something you need to see to believe!

Whether it’s in front of thousands of people in Vegas or a group of cars at an intersection, it’s always the same goal.

“We want to grab your attention,” says Altamirano. “We promise our clients professional advertisers. So, we get your attention anyway we have to.”

There’s not many better ways to do that than a simple spin of a sign and as Henderson adds, they spin better than anyone in the game right now.

“We’re like the major league of sign spinning.”
