Pasadena’s CalTech Mourns Loss of UCLA Professor Caltech is mourning the loss of UCLA professor and Caltech alumni William S. Klug, Ph.D. (mechanical engineering, conferred in 2004), who was shot to death in an apparent murdersuicide on the UCLA campus on Wednesday, June 1. Police identified Klug’s killer as Mainak Sarkar, a former engineering doctoral student. In a statement, Caltech officials said, “Professor Klug’s death was the result of a terrible act of violence and we are deeply saddened by the sudden loss of an accomplished scholar, husband, and father. The thoughts of the entire Caltech community are with Professor Klug’s family, colleagues, and students at this difficult time, and we extend our heartfelt condolences to them.” A longtime collaborator with Caltech faculty, Professor Klug was passionate about his work at the intersection of mechanics and biology. His early explorations investigated the mechanics of DNA packaging in viruses. In recent years, he had become very interested in modeling the biomechanics of the heart, particularly its electrophysiology. Police have identified Klug’s killer as Mainak SEE PAGE 3

Minimum Wage in Unincorporated Los Angeles County Increases to $10.50 Hourly on July 1
Starting July 1, 2016, businesses with 26 or more employees must pay a minimum wage of $10.50 an hour to workers who perform work in the unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County. At that time, the County of Los Angeles Department of Consumer and Business Affairs (DCBA) will accept and investigate claims from workers who
allege they are not paid the new minimum wage. DCBA is currently conducting an extensive educational campaign to inform businesses in Los Angeles County of the upcoming change in the minimum wage. DCBA is hosting several business roundtable events and gone SEE PAGE 2
