Wildfire Season Officially Underway – Beware of ‘Fine Fuels’

BY ANNETTE SEMERDJIAN Depending on who you talk to, Southern California could be facing one of the toughest fire seasons in history due to the ongoing drought. The dry and windy conditions in California are a potential a recipe for disaster, but the fine fuels caused by invasive plants, many in your own backyard, can increase the fire risk substantially.

Wildfires are caused by these factors: fine fuel loads, windy and dry conditions, lightning, drought, and the effects of El Niño and La Niña. Millions of acres have been burned by human error and carelessness, which is a leading cause of wildfires.

Yet, fine fuel loads can be increased unknowingly from your own front yard when planting non-native flowers and grasses.

Man has introduced most of these now invasive species to their non-native areas, resulting in one of the leading causes in wildfires – fine fuels.

for Southern California and some other regions. In it they stated that fine fuel loadings would be a problem for Southern California. Also, the area could be facing the worst conditions in fire season compared to other areas like Hawaii and the Southwest. Southern California

also was hit heavily with drought that lasted now to its fifth year, which could worsen fine fuel conditions that are a key source for wildfires.

Introduction of non-native plants to certain areas of California cause it to become invasive to the area’s natural vegetation and release these

fine fuels. According to the California Department of Food and Agriculture, there are currently 183 invasive species on their Pest Ratings of Noxious Weed Species and Noxious Weed Seed List and some plants still have the potential to become invasive. These invasive plants often outcompete for water and sunlight, and even replace native and natural plants that do not cause fine fuel.

Although unintentional, our attempts at improving the drought with horticulture can have harmful consequences and hinder the natural state of vegetation when adding plants that do not belong in certain areas.

With the conditions of a dry and windy La Niña that may lie ahead, the highest risk may be in June. Predictive Services National Interagency Fire Center will issue another report on June 1.

Also look out for certain plants when attempting to improve your lawn, such as Big Periwinkle and English Ivy. More species can be found on California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s “Don’t Plant Me!” page where they have listed nine species of invasive plants.

The FBI and law enforcement partners are seeking information from the public that leads to the identity of one or several unidentified male suspect(s) wanted for bank robberies in Los Angeles County, believed to be linked based on description and modus operandi. The suspect(s) are known as the “Knuckles Bandits” since a suspect in one of the early robberies was described as having tattoos on his knuckles.

During the robberies, the Knuckles Bandit(s) approach the victim teller window and present the victim with a note demanding cash. In the most recent robbery that occurred in January 2016, the suspect threatened a gun and appeared to have a gun in his pocket, according to the victim.

The suspect(s) are described as either Hispanic or Armenian male(s) with facial hair (trimmed beard or goatee). Other similarities are as follows: the suspects wore distinctive sweatshirts; ball caps; or hats during the robberies.

During the robbery on Dec. 8, 2015, the suspect appeared to have tattoos on his knuckles, which may have been drawn on, as op-

posed to permanent tattoos.

- Dec. 8, 2015 - Wells Fargo Bank (inside Vons) - 1390 N. Allen Blvd., Pasadena.

- Dec. 16, 2015 - US Bank (inside Albertsons) 19307 Saticoy St., Reseda.

- Dec. 23, 2015 - US Bank (inside Ralphs) - 1101 W. Huntington Drive, Arcadia.

- Jan. 4, 2016 - Wells Fargo Bank (inside Vons) 9119 Reseda Blvd., Northridge.

- Jan. 20, 2016 - Wells Fargo Bank (inside Albertsons) - 2035 Hillhurst Ave., Los Angeles.

‘Wildfire Awareness Week’ Declared in California Cal Fire Stresses Need for Californians to be Ready for Wildfire After a destructive fire season in 2015, conditions in California are already drying out prompting Governor Edmund G. Brown, Jr. to declare May 1 through 7 as “Wildfire Awareness Week.”

During Wildfire Awareness Week, Cal Fire is stressing the critical role all Californians play in preparing for fire season now.

“The rain we received this winter and spring has been great, but with over 29 million dead trees due to the drought and bark beetle, our fire conditions still remain elevated,” said Chief Ken Pimlott, Cal Fire director. “While our firefighters are preparing for what could be another busy fire season, this week is an important reminder that all Californians must do their part and be

ready.”

Despite the rain over the winter, Cal Fire has already responded to nearly 700 wildfires since the beginning of the year. With wildfires on the rise, Cal Fire is reminding all Californians during Wildfire Awareness Week that when it comes to wildfires, remember “Ready, Set, Go!” Being “Ready” for a wildfire starts by maintaining 100 feet of defensible space and hardening homes with fire resistant building materials. During this drought Cal Fire is highly recommending residents landscape their yards with drought tolerant and fire resistant plants.

Being “Set” includes having an evacuation plan and an emergency supply kit.

Lastly, when a wildfires strikes, residents are urged

to “Go!” and evacuate early.

Cal Fire is also urging all Californians during Wildfire Awareness Week to learn the steps to prevent sparking a wildfire. Over 90 percent of the wildfires in California are sparked by the activity of people, so “One Less Spark, means One Less Wildfire.” It is everyone’s responsibility to be fire safe outdoors and prevent sparking a wildfire.

Residents looking for additional information on how to prepare themselves, their families, and their homes for wildfire can visit www.ReadyForWildfire.org.

The site offers tips for residents to make their homes more resistant to wildfires and to ensure that their families are ready to evacuate early and safely when a wildfire strikes.

Historic Preservation Commission to Hold Special Meeting Regarding Depot Rehabilitation

The development team that has been working on a plan for the rehabilitation of Monrovia’s Historic Santa Fe Depot will present its plan at a special meeting of the Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) on Monday, May 9, at 7 p.m. in the community room at the library.

Several months ago, the city council approved Daylight Limited LLC (a subsidiary of Samuelson Fetter) to do a so-called “warm shell”

rehabilitation of the depot, in other words, to prepare it for use as a deli or restaurant.

The city council directed the HPC to oversee the rehabilitation process and to consider approving the depot as a City Historic Landmark.

Subsequently, the HPC created a subcommittee to work with Daylight Limited regarding the rehabilitation of the Depot. This committee has met with representatives of Daylight Limited to assess the proposed scope of the rehabilitation project.

sic Mobile that introduces young students to music through hands-on experience.

Earlier this week, the group held a formal presentation ceremony at the Showcase House for the recipients of this year’s grants. Those receiving grants included: Alhambra Education Foundation (K through eight “Music and More” program); the Arcadia Music Club (Instruction Specialist); Marshall Funda-

MONROVIA April 29 At 5:32 a.m., officers were dispatched to the report of a male and female involved in an argument, which had escalated and become physical. Officers arrived and interviewed the subjects. They determined the male subject had physically injured the female and was the primary aggressor. The male subject was arrested for domestic violence. The female was advised of her rights and available assistance.

At 7:25 p.m., a vehicle vandalism was reported at a business parking lot in the 300 block of West Huntington. The victim was inside the business shopping and upon exiting the store, he observed the suspect key his vehicle. The suspect is a former roommate the victim had evicted several months prior. The victim believes the suspect is now homeless. The suspect was not located. The investigation is continuing.

At 8:40 p.m., the Foothill Air Support Team helicopter observed a vehicle that was traveling at a high rate of speed lose control at the intersection of El Nido and Hillcrest and it landed in the front yards of two properties. Officers responded and located the vehicle and the driver. The driver said he was traveling 40 to 50 miles per hour, heading east on Hillcrest.

When he passed El Nido, he lost control and went airborne. He landed onto two properties in their front yards. Police received several calls from residents who heard the accident. No one was injured.

April 30 At 2:25 a.m., an officer observed a vehicle drive through a stop sign at the intersection of Magnolia and Evergreen. He conducted a traffic stop and discovered the driver had been drinking. After performing field sobriety tests, the driver was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol and held for a sobering period.

At 12:38 p.m., officers responded to a business in the 1600 block of South Mountain regarding a theft of tools that just occurred.

The two adult, male suspects were detained by officers, driving away from the scene in a white Chevrolet Tahoe. The tools were recovered and returned to the store. The two suspects were arrested and taken into custody.

May 1

At 12:25 a.m., officers were called to a residence in the 900 block of South Mayflower where a family was involved in a verbal argument. One of the subjects had left prior to police arriving, but she was located on an adjacent street talking on her cell phone. The subject was found to be extremely intoxicated and unable to care for herself.

She was arrested for being drunk in public and held for a sobering period.

PASADENA

April 22 In the early morning hours, the Pasadena Police Department coordinated a multi-jurisdictional enforcement effort in re-

sponse to the recent shootings in our community. The Pasadena Police Department and other law enforcement officials served seven search warrants and conducted probation/parole compliance checks on four different locations.

The operation resulted in the arrest of a suspect for witness intimidation related to a criminal investigation by the Pasadena Police Department. Another suspect was arrested for possession of marijuana for sale. A third suspect was arrested for possession of methamphetamine for sale and a fourth suspect for an outstanding arrest warrant. The Pasadena Police Department will continue to collaborate with local, state, and federal officials as necessary to address the active gang members in our community. This mission was several weeks in the making and is a great example of the proactive police work executed by the Pasadena Police Department.

At about 9:08 p.m., a night janitor was performing his normal duties at a business in the 1000 block of South Fair Oaks Avenue when he discovered a discarded passport (which included a photo) and a loaded revolver. The janitor reported his findings to the Pasadena Police Department. Officers responded and took custody of the firearm. They also examined the passport in the name of Francisco Rico (age 44, Cypress resident) and began searching the area. A short time later, Rico was located and detained without incident. During the field investigation, Rico admitted to discarding his passport and the firearm. He is a felon and was arrested for possession of a firearm.

At about 11:43 p.m., two Male Hispanic Adults (Adrian Rodriguez, 32, and Ricardo Saverda 19, both Pasadena residents) were observed by at least one witness discharging a firearm into the air in the area of North Marengo Avenue and Villa Street. Following the shooting, a witness saw the suspects park their vehicle in the 400 block of North Marengo Avenue. The witness reported the information to the Pasadena Police Department. Uniformed and special enforcement officers responded to investigate. They searched the area and located the suspects seated in the described vehicle. The suspects were detained and a firearm was located in the car.

April 24

At about 11:30 a.m., an Adult Male Armenian committed a strong-armed robbery on an elderly female near the west border of Pasadena and Los Angeles.

The suspect fled the area in a vehicle, which was reported to police. Moments later, Pasadena police officers saw the suspect vehicle and attempted to conduct a traffic stop; however, the suspect failed to yield. Pasadena police officers initiated a vehicle pursuit and the robbery suspect crashed near Community Arms, where he abandoned his vehicle and ran into the housing complex. He subsequently ran on to the roof of one of the housing units where he refused to surrender. The suspect consistently reached into his waistband gesturing as though he was armed.

Pasadena police officers quickly contained the area preventing the suspect's escape. LAPD’s airship was immediately over the incident to assist the ground of-

ficers and watching the suspect's movement. Pasadena police officers requested the assistance of a canine officer (which was never used) and positioned other less lethal devices to deploy if necessary. The LAPD airship issued verbal orders to the suspect requesting he surrender. At about 11:45 a.m., the suspect climbed down from the rooftop and surrendered without incident.

TEMPLE CITY

April 25

An armed robbery arrest of a MH/25 and MW/29 was made at 11:04 a.m., in the 6300 block of Rosemead Boulevard. The suspects entered a local business, took several items, brandished a gun when confronted by employees and exited without paying. The suspects were captured a short time later and evidence was recovered.

A stolen vehicle occurred between April 24 at 10 p.m. and April 25 at 9 a.m., in the 5400 block of McCulloch Avenue.

A grand theft occurred between 11 a.m. and 12 p.m., in the 5900 block of Camellia Avenue. Someone took property from the front yard of a residence.

April 26

A stolen vehicle occurred between 9:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m., in the 10600 block of Fairhall Street.

A petty theft occurred between 12 p.m. and 1 p.m., in the 5500 Temple City Boulevard. Someone took property from a front yard.

A residential burglary occurred at 9:30 p.m., in the 9000 block of Pentland Street. Somoene shattered the rear sliding glass door and stole property. A witness saw a male wearing a red hoodie in the victim’s backyard, who ran when confronted.

April 29

A grand theft occurred between 6:45 a.m. and 7:30 a.m., in the 5700 block of Rosemead Boulevard.

Someone took money and a phone from a purse while the victim was shopping.

April 30 A possession of an unregistered firearm and possession of a loaded firearm arrest of a MH/22 was made at 1:20 a.m., in the 9100 block of Duffy Drive.

Deputies contacted a suspicious male inside of a parked vehicle and discovered he possessed a loaded handgun.

Dear Editor: Sierra Madre announced a new badge and patches for their officers?

Seems the new badge should be a star and the patches should contain a bear!

I am sure the officers currently working for the SMPD are good folks, but the writing is on the patch.

The city is in trouble and the passing of the UUT is only a quick fix. Last year there was a $530,000 deficit with an 8 percent UUT tax. So, with an increase of 2 percent UUT, people are be-

ing led to believe the police department is saved. New officers cost money! New officers need to be hired, trained and what about increase payments to the retirement system for the new officers and for our older officers near retirement? What is next? Are we looking for a 20 percent UUT tax?

The sheriff’s department has done a good job assisting our city in its current budget crisis and would continue to serve our community with a substantial savings. We need to ask, do we want to spend more money than we should in order to maintain our own police department or would it be in our best interest to save money with the sheriff’s department and utilize the money saved to create a surplus of cash that could be held in reserve with some of it used for needed programs and services? I think our leadership needs to look at needs versus wants and do what is right for the citizens.

I never worked with him and most likely he will not remember me but I sure remember him. He was tough as nails, I would dread the runs I would have to do when he would lead our squad. He was a great man and I now feel fortunate to he been taught by him. He was someone I admired and if I were to be a co, I wanted to be like him. It surprises me because he was in remarkable shape. God rest

Reader’s Response to ‘Introduction of the Plastic Bag Ban’ (4/21/16 Issue)

When the issue of paper bag use first came up, the state mandated the bags

had to be bio-degradable so they would self-destroy if left out. That provision was successful in passing the law. What happened to the monitoring of that requirement? I personally oppose having to pay for grocery bags with the constant increase in the cost of food, even during the depression we never had to pay for bags! Also, at that time, the bags had paper handles which made them easy to use, especially for elderly, handicapped, and parents that can carry a bag in one hand and hold the hand of a child in the other hand.

‘Rock Out’ for a Good Cause at Union Station Homeless Services' 5K Run/Walk Runners and “rock stars” will be racing to end homelessness on Saturday, May 14. The second annual Rockin’ for the Homeless 5K Run/Walk, created in collaboration with Union Station’s Young Leaders Society, will directly benefit Union Station Homeless Services. Check-in will be from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m., with opening ceremonies beginning at 8:15 a.m.

Combining exercise with a rockin’ good time, this family-friendly event encourages participants to dress as their favorite rock star for a five-kilometer run around Hahamongna Watershed Park near La Cañada. The Kiddie Dash offers young children a safe and fun obstacle course of their own. There will be

race t-shirts and medals for all 5K participants, as well as a costume contest for best “rock star.”

Rockin’ for the Homeless 5K was created by Union Station’s Young Leaders Society, a group of 80 young professionals between the ages of 21 and 39 years old who are dedicated to ending homelessness in our community.

The group organizes various fundraisers, volunteer opportunities, and young professional networking events throughout the year.

This event is expected to be even bigger than last year’s - the 5K run/walk is anticipated to host 500 runners and walkers, and raise more than $35,000 for Union Station Homeless Services.

Food trucks, including Kona Ice and Crepe’n Around, await participants at the finish line, along with the Roam.e Mobile Boutique. The event will once again feature live music from Head Lite View.

All ticket sales and donations will support the ongoing efforts of Union Station Homeless Services, the San Gabriel Valley’s largest and most comprehensive non-profit helping men, women, and children rebuild their lives and end homelessness.

Friends of the Sierra Madre Library 54th Annual Sierra Madre Art Fair The 54th Annual Sierra Madre Art Fair, sponsored by the Friends of the Sierra Madre Library, will be held in Memorial Park, 222 W. Sierra Madre Blvd., on Saturday, May 7, from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, May 8, from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Fair this year is in honor and remembrance of Nancy Doyle, who was a longtime member of the exhibits committee and also a much accomplished and very talented artist who participated in the Art Fair for over 20 years!

Seventy-five artists, including 18 newly juried, will display and sell their works

of art. Mediums include oil paintings, jewelry, watercolors, glass, wood, metal, wearable art, photography, pottery, ceramics, mixed media, and weaving. P. Dot’s Comics and Collectibles

awrence Persky, owner of P. Dot’s Comics and Collectibles, is a comic book entrepreneur.

The store, which opened in 2013, is the result of Persky’s business savvy and passion for comic books. Under Persky’s guidance, P. Dot’s evolved from a childhood hobby, into a successful business.

Persky describes how his love for comics began, “I remember reading a bunch of my dad’s comics and just being interested in Superman, Batman, Flash, as a kid. I always loved the different stories, the artwork, the cool covers from that era really got me into collecting and then I just stuck with it through middle school and high school.”

Not only was Persky passionate for comics, he also got a taste for the business side of the industry at an early age, “my dad, he used to have a thrift store, so from time to time he would get different comic book collections and he’d have me price them out and help him sell them at different swap meets.”

As the years went by, it started to become clear that Persky’s passion would grow into much more than just a hobby, “It just eventually turned into a business … I saw an opportunity to sell some of my books for side money and then I thought, ‘well if I can flip one or two, then I can flip 10 or 20,’ then it turned into a 100 and it turned into a different business and monster all its own.”

In 2007 Persky scouted the comic book selection at local swap meets and was able to begin growing his inventory at a much larger scale, “I noticed different dealers had books that they were blowing out for about

a dollar each, but I knew those were worth more than a dollar ... I started buying a little shoe box, then it turned into several boxes worth, then entire collections … eventually what kick started the store, in 2011/2012 I ended up buying a warehouse worth of comics in Vegas and I was like, ‘well now I need to find a way to move this stuff.’”

This massive collection of hard-to-find back-issues is what separates P. Dot’s from the competition, “For me, when I thought about opening the store, it was a quirk for me, because I used to go to some of the local stores and they would never have the back-issues I was looking for … so I figured that was not an opportunity I wanted to miss … With back issues, you actually have to know the market, it’s hard to keep up with and a lot of stores choose not to.

That’s the void we try to fill,” says Persky.

In addition to their fantastic selection of older, collectible comics, P. Dot’s also receive weekly shipments of new comics and graphic novels from some of the biggest publishers: D.C., Marvel, Image, Valiant, among others.

The music is growing in popularity and the guys now have their own set of groupies. Old Town may be “historic,” but we are definitely not history!

Now let us talk about Mother’s Day. In my world, anyone and everyone who nurtures, protects, teaches, and otherwise adds to the life of another human being (or animal) should be celebrated on Mother’s Day. In fact, just as I was beginning to type this paragraph, I received a text from my nephew saying, “I left a Mother’s Day gift for you at

Old Town the shop: thank you for being my mom.” That is sweet. So, from a mom who is a traditional mom, an adoptive mom, and a surrogate mom to several (I have lost count), here is a little advice: do not forget your “mom-person” this Sunday, May 8. It is your chance to make someone very happy.

Here is a weighty subject: to weigh or not to weigh … that is apparently the question of the day if you believe Facebook. We are talking food here. Is it fair to charge by “weight” when you purchase food at a salad bar? It is, if you build the salad – same as produce or meat at the market. You pick what you want and you pay the posted price per pound. The more you buy, the more you pay: that is why I personally love the new pricing policy at Salad Bistro. I am just glad no one in town has revived the “weigh in, then weight on the way out” rule that a smorgasbord in Pasadena had years ago.

Seriously – there was a sign at their register that gave the choice of paying a set, slightly high price, or choosing to literally “weigh in” on entry, then “weigh out” before paying.

Wonder how that would play out on Facebook!

Here is the latest around town: the process of selecting

a long-term Street Fair operator is moving along, with a decision to be made at the end of May; filming activity has picked up this year and we have another location scout in town looking for locations for a commercial which may come our way next week; Bottega by Bella Sera finally got their gas line installed and is looking at a June opening date; as of April 19, the city says there is construction activity going on at Frost My Cake (the old Monrovia Bakery building), so I have renewed hope; Julie from The Saltner is in the process of wine tasting in preparation for their soft opening later this month; MOTAB (Monrovia Old Town Advisory Board) applications are in, and selection of our new advisory board members (three this round) will begin with interviews in the near future - and, our beloved Kerri Zessau, a 25-year employee of the City of Monrovia, has returned to work after some time off, and is now working in the Community Development Department (yippee, Kerri!). Just one more thing: The Peach Café is preparing to make an announcement that will make all of us “Peachies” very happy, and if I print it now I will be in big trouble. So we wait until next week …

Monrovia Decides on a New Mayor Pro Tem

Each year the mayor appoints various city councilmembers to liaison positions to the various community boards and local governmental groups. In addition, a mayor pro tem is also selected from among the other councilmembers. At the meeting on Tuesday, May 3, the council unanimously elected Alex Blackburn to fill that position for the 20162017 year.

When Mayor Tom Adams was elected in 2015, he announced that he would make the liaison appointments as

a collaborative process with the other members of the council. Adams announced that in a special session on May 3, the council decided on those assignments. At the council meeting, the mayor announced that those assignments would be listed online the next day.

The mayor will continue as the liaison to the Chamber of Commerce, Independent Cities Association, and Joint Powers Authority, among other assignments. Crudgington and Shevlin will continue as members of the audit committee, while each serves as ex-officio members of several

other boards and commissions. Spicer will continue to be involved with the work force investment board and the Gold Line Joint Powers Authority, while Blackburn will continue to serve on the board of LabLaunch, as well as serving as the liaison to the mayor’s Old Town advisory board and the San Gabriel Valley Economic Partnership.

Brush Inspection Letter Sent to Around 1,500 Residents With the 2016 fire season approaching, Monrovia, this past week, sent out customary brush inspection reminder letters regarding resident compliance with the fire code which includes vegetation removal for those living in the hillside

interface area. In total, Monrovia sent out nearly 1,500 letters, and actual brush inspection activities (being coordinated by Monrovia Fire Department personnel) will begin on May 15, and will last through July 1.

Special Meeting to Consider the Historic Santa Fe Depot Rehabilitation Plan As you may recall, the historical preservation commission (HPC) created the depot sub-committee a few months ago to interface with the Daylight Limited LLC, development team regarding the rehabilitation of the city’s Historic Santa Fe Depot building at Station Square. Since that time, the depot sub-committee has met with both staff and the development team to assess the proposed scope of the rehabilitation project, and those discussions have been positive, collaborative, and productive.

LLC, development team last week submitted an application for the full HPC to consider approval of a certificate of appropriateness to authorize the scope of the rehabilitative work to be done at the Historic Santa Fe Depot. Given the submittal, the HPC will be conven-

This is an exciting step forward in the process to renovate and restore the Historic Santa Fe Depot, and we will be certain to keep everyone apprised of our progress moving forward!

Jeremy Sanchez Selected as New Fire Division Chief

After a thorough and competitive recruitment process, Jeremy Sanchez has been selected as Monrovia’s newest Fire Division Chief.

During the assessment process, Jeremy not only demonstrated an aptitude for all of the technical qualifications

needed to serve in the division chief role, he also demonstrated a commitment to our organizational values, and we are confident that Jeremy will serve as a tremendous leader for both the fire department and for the city.

Jeremy is currently transitioning out of his current assignments and into his new role as the A-shift Division Chief. In that capacity, he will be overseeing emergency preparedness, policies, technology, volunteer services, and brush clearance.

In Honor of National Nurses Week American Nurses Association Calls for a Culture of Safety During National Nurses Week (May 6 to 12), the American Nurses Association (ANA) is asking nurses to help make their workplaces safer to enhance patient care and nurses’ health and well-being. The emphasis on

developing this type of work environment is also reflected in the National Nurses Week theme, “Culture of Safety - It Starts with You.” At 3.4 million strong, registered nurses are the largest group of health care profes-

sionals. However, registered nurses also rank sixth among all occupations for the highest rates of musculoskeletal injuries resulting in missed work days. Every day, nurses and other health care workers suffer debilitating pain and

often career-ending injuries from manually lifting patients - an estimated 3,600 pounds per shift. “Injuries to nurses and other health care professionals should not be tolerated as just ‘part of the job,’” said ANA President Pamela F.

Huntington Hospital Hosts Superhero-Themed Children’s Events Recently, Huntington Hospital hosted superherothemed children's events in honor of their neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and fetal surgery patients.

On April 23, NICU graduates and their families celebrated with games, lunch, and the opportunity to visit with the NICU staff.

On April 24, the Los Angeles Fetal Surgery team, led

by Ramen Chmait, MD, a faculty member of the USC Keck

School of Medicine, hosted a celebration at Huntington Hospital to honor their fetal surgery patients. Over 900 people attended both events.

Innovation in education is the theme of the Pasadena Educational Foundation's (PEF) spring event - Celebrating Our Schools Innovate 2016 - which will feature Virgin Galactic President Steve Isakowitz, an award to community arts advocate Joan Palmer, and the first ever Launchpad interactive showcase featuring the Pasadena Unified School District's (PUSD) innovative programs and students. Duarte High Receives High Praise From Accreditation Team

A visiting team from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) left Duarte High School (DHS) this month with a positive reaction and indications of a return to the highest possible accreditation status.

WASC is an accrediting commission for high schools and colleges, and the accreditation process assures the educational community, the general public, and other agencies that a school has clearly defined objectives and is on track to implement improvements.

The WASC three-day visit to DHS provided a chance for administrators from other districts to learn about the school, probe the things it is doing right, ask questions about past concerns, and look at the school’s plan for the future.

“The chairman of the WASC team said it was a tremendous visit,” said Principal Mark Sims of DHS. “She said the school has changed considerably since the last visit two years ago.

“She also said to keep doing what we’re doing, and to keep pushing (for improvement).”

“The WASC team was effusive in their praise of DHS. They reported that the school demonstrated the capacity commitment, and competence to support high-quality learning and ongoing student improvement.”

Principal Sims said the positive oral report from the WASC team was “great news for the staff, and gratifying to everyone at the school. It’s one of the most important steps in our efforts to change the perceptions of DHS.” The DHS staff can expect to receive the final written report in late May or early June, at which time the school can formalize the celebration.

Going to Out-Of-State and International Universities

BY MAY S. RUIZ Any parent who has sent a child to university will tell you that college admissions are a mind-churning process, an out-of-body experience, but that which leaves you drained and numb. It isn’t surprising, therefore, that it spawned a billion-dollar industry which includes test prep companies, coaches, and independent counselors who help students get ready for and navigate this complicated maze.

Bob Tyra and Becky Marchant are Southern California educators who, in 2012, co-founded a company that holds independent college fairs outside the high schools called California Outof-State & International College Fairs (COOS&ICF). Tyra had an extensive professional career in junior high and high school counseling programs as well as high school and adult school career counseling. Marchant works as lead counselor, ACT testing supervisor and intern coordinator at Brea Olinda High School. Together, they provide high school students access to information they need for college admissions.

According to Marchant, the idea for this niche organization came to her as she attended events with her students. She relates, “Despite the array of colleges in attendance, students tended to gravitate to tables of institutions they were already aware of in the local area and walk by those that they were unfamiliar with.

“As educators, the challenge is to open students’ minds to all options and this is something we are very passionate about! By holding college fair events for only out-of-state, WUE (Western Undergraduate Exchange) and international colleges and universities, we found a solution to potentially selflimiting behavior by finding

a way to expand their world,” continues Marchant.

COOS&ICF held its first fair in 2012 at the Pomona Unified School District Conference Center at Indian Hill.

Close to 1,000 high school students and counselors from surrounding counties and over 50 educational institutions from 23 states, some from outside the United States, attended.

That impressive draw convinced Tyra and Marchant that they should hold more fairs of this kind in other Southern California areas. Now they offer eight such events – two in the spring and four in the fall.

Marchant says, “To date we have held 29 fairs, served over 15,000 students and hosted almost 200 out-ofstate universities, including 50 international institutions.

Our fairs are always free to students and educators and local busing is reimbursed.

We limit the size of the fair so students will be able to explore all participating institutions and we provide materials to prepare everyone who attends.”

An enthusiastic recruiter with the Swiss Education Group happily handed out brochures and earnestly explained how they can assist students in making internship arrangements as part of their study program. One helpful recruiter from an English university was making the case for an English versus a Scottish education (three years against four, thus saving a full year of tuition).

college fair – 17-year-old Tito Morales, a junior at Downtown Magnet High School in Los Angeles. Asked why he is at the College Fair, Morales responds, “I’m at the point of deciding on majors and looking at all my options. While I want to stay in-state, I also want to see what’s available out-of-state.

“My interests include writing in my journal – sto-

ries, anime fan fiction, whatever’s on my mind; I have no boundaries,” Morales continues. “But I’m mainly looking for a school that offers graphic design, animation, gaming.

And, of course, one main concern is their accommodations for students like me since I’m in a wheel chair. I would like to see the college’s or university’s preparation for emergencies, should they arise.”

Morales spoke with several recruiters and found that universities in Canada and the United Kingdom offer courses he is particularly interested in, and even have accommodations for wheelchair-bound students.

One important consideration is the cost of a college education. As Morales states, “I’m concerned about tuition too. Our school counselor, Lynda McGee is working with students right now on scholarships. She’s also making sure we’re taking all the courses we need to be on track for college.”

“I really want to work on digital design and graphics. A job with Dreamworks is truly something I would enjoy,” Morales wistfully says.

An only child born to Guatemalan parents, Morales will be the first in his family to attend college. His parents could not afford higher education for themselves but they are determined for their son to live his dream of a college diploma, gainful employment in the future, and a better life. For Morales, finding a university during this College Fair is the first step in that direction. And for Tyra and Marchant, that would be such a rewarding outcome.

A majority of the workers who laid the tracks on the western half of the construction were Chinese immigrants; reason two is that May marks the immigration of the first Japanese to the United States.

In the 1980s the San Gabriel Valley did not have a thriving Asian demographic.

Monterey Park was the only city whose Asian household made up one-third of the city’s overall demographic.

However, this began changing in the 1990s and continues through to today. Now, cities such as San Gabriel City, San Marino, Rosemead, Arcadia, and Temple City not only have thriving Asian households and businesses, but they are also the majority of residents there.

To celebrate Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month there will be events and exhibits throughout not only the San Gabriel Valley, but also Los Angeles County for residents to see and do. Spring Awakens at Eaton Canyon Nature Center

On Saturday, May 21, and Sunday, May 22, Eaton Canyon Nature Center will be hosting the annual Spring Awakening Festival.

This year, the event will be honoring David Las Cano Greyfeather. The event is sponsored by Whole Foods Market and Hope Cafe and Catering. Eaton Canyon is also in partnership with the Los Angeles Department of Recreation.

Eaton Canyon is a 190acre geological nature preserve at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains. There are hiking trails, equestrian trails, picnic areas, streams, natural habitats, native plants, and wildlife. This year's festival will be hosted in the Equestrian Staging Area.

Each year the festival showcases native cultural traditions, such as tribal drummers, musicians, dancers, and storytellers. Chris Robin, who attended last year's Spring Awakening, said that the event was extraordinary and that it was enjoyable to listen to well-educated individuals talk about the wildlife in Southern California. He also hopes to attend this year's festival.

The event is free for the whole family and will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Eaton Canyon Nature Center.

The Nature Center is located at 1750 N. Altadena Drive in Pasadena.

ousekeeping is like threading beads on a string with no knot at the end.

When I was a young woman I walked around the house with a dust cloth or a dresstail ever in my hand. I vacuumed at least three times a week and I never left a dirty dish in the sink.

Times have changed.

I do not wear dresses any more, I have learned that dust cloths harbor germs, and I eat out a lot.

Every once in a while I am forced to dig in if I want to avoid a fine from the health department.

Last week was one of those once in a whiles. I scrubbed, waxed, and shined everything in sight. Then I went to the laundromat with my scatter rugs, the cat hair cov-

ered furniture throws, and the big, old Heirloom bedspread.

By dinnertime, my house looked and smelled delightfully clean but I was exhausted. I was too tired even to go out to eat. I decided I would just have veggie hot dogs and a can of baked beans.

I nearly caused a riot.

The electric can opener whirred and sleeping, hiding cats tore into the kitchen meowing, “m-r-r-owing,” and climbing my legs. They jumped on the counter and found no tuna - only beans.

They complained bitterly.

Mewston decided if that was the only fare available, he would have some. Before I could stop him, he slurped up some of the bean juice.

Now, we all know that cats should not eat beans.

Mewston proved it that

night. He threw up on my labor intensive, spanking clean Heirloom bedspread.

In his embarrassment, he retreated to the newly purchased floor mat in front of the kitchen sink and began to claw. Thus he learned that it makes a wonderful scratching pad.

Meanwhile, Meowry had discovered the no longer cat hair covered furniture throws. He does love sleeping on things that are clean.

They remained that way for a short time.

I spot-cleaned the bedspread, there are two clean throws left to sleep on and only one corner of the new mat is completely shredded.

Maybe next week I will have to succumb and string a few more beads but tonight I am going out to eat. I am certainly not going to open a can of beans!

Ariel is only age 4 and Elsa age 3. Ariel is very friendly and cuddly to everyone. Elsa is shy but very bonded to Ariel. Let us make it a truly Happy Mother’s Day for this mother-daughter duo!

A durable power of attorney for healthcare, or a “healthcare directive,” allows you to appoint an attorney-in-fact to make healthcare decisions for you when you can no longer make them for yourself. In an advance healthcare directive, you may state your wishes regarding life-sustaining treatment, organ donation, and funeral arrangements.

A directive also allows a preauthorized agent to access your medical information.

h the eternal competition which calls itself public politics.

It does not matter what you think, it is who you know, really! It also helps if you conform to a certain party’s agenda.

One of the most important seats on the board of supervisors, which currently is held by Republican Mike Antonovich, is up for grabs due to term limits … representing one of the largest areas in Los Angeles County, to the tune of 2 million constituents and 2,000-plus square miles.

In recent weeks, we have been in contact with supervisorial candidates who have been (directly or indirectly) excluded from participating in various and sundry 5th District Candidate forums … for a variety of reasons - ranging from, “We send invitations to everyone,” to, “They didn’t meet our criteria … ” One of these candidates for Antonovich’s seat on the board of supervisors, Billy Malone, is not a wealthy politician with insider information like some other candidates.

Malone is a humble working man who wants to make a difference but cannot seem to get his name on any of the recent debates, some of which have been shown on ABC7.

The Los Angeles League of Conservation Voters (LALCV), formed in 1976, is the only environmental Political Action Committee (PAC) in Los Angeles County and recently they held a forum with some notable absences last week.

I asked the LALCV why Malone and others were not invited to that forum that was broadcast by ABC7 Los Angeles last week. Here is what they said: “LALCV has been involved in local elections for nearly four decades, and we've sponsored many debates in races across L.A. County. In our experience, sometimes, so many candidates file for an office that including all of them in a single, one-hour debate would prevent the informative discussion we aim to facilitate. This was one of those races. So, we invited six candidates based on our assessment of each candidate's political viability and positions on the issues.

Malone told Arcadia Weekly: “This stinks of foul play. I have also attached the response I received from them when I asked why they are being exclusive … ‘only included those who met our internal criteria for selection.’

Yet it was advertised as a public debate to be televised.

I am sure they will come up with an excuse of what ‘only included those who met our internal criteria for selection’ means, but either way it is really not good and purposefully gets others like myself a bad rap for not showing up.”

Malone continued: “I then added a list of facts including that all Republicans were invited but only one Democrat, Rajpal was the only person of color and only rep that lives in AV (Antelope Valley) and he received 21 percent of the vote last election, which in a split vote election like this could be enough, yet he did not meet their secret selection criteria. He and I will lose votes as no-shows and, like the others, we work hard for them. I actually had a number of followers who asked why I wasn't there and if I had dropped out.

There was no disclaimer stating that it was only a personal selection, not a public forum. Secret agendas should never be part of a public forum, transparency is required of our candidates and election and no less should be expected from those dealing with it. The debate lineup would assume you have to be white and rich to be included, otherwise you are out. Two candidates are not even from our district but were invited, they happen to be white, wealthy, and Republican.

Even if Rajpal only gets a few votes, there is a kid of color out there who sees [a candidate] that looks and sounds like him and can make him think, ‘oh, I can do that if he did’ … but not if he sees only rich, white people are invited to the table.

It is not always about the winning but the difference you make trying.

This is not about who wins, it is about principle. We should be encouraging more

people to get involved, this only discourages and leaves us with fewer choices.

That's not even addressing the issue of stealing votes away from us.”

Malone also said told Arcadia Weekly that he spoke with candidate Darrell Park who stated, “I did not realize how many forums and interviews I have not been invited to … ” Malone added: “I looked back and, up til’ now, only two for me, and one of those was because it was the real estate associations and I happen to be a member. There are more coming up that are not inviting all.

As a point of interest, Mitch Englander got the endorsement from LALCV, which proves it was just their internal endorsement interviews made public.

Also spoke with Rajpal and he was shocked to find out he also was not being invited.”

It comes down to money: According to report in the Los Angeles Times … L.A. City Councilman Mitch Englander raised $580,570, according to campaign finance reports filed with the Registrar-Recorder/ County Clerk. Kathryn Barger, the chief of staff to incumbent Supervisor Antonovich, raised $514,957. The other leading money-raisers in that race are: - Prosecutor Elan Carr, $426,068.

- State Senator Robert Huff (R - Diamond Bar): $264,437.

- Glendale City Councilman Ara Najarian: $113,652.

This will be the first time in more than 35 years that the 5th District seat is open. Antonovich is leaving because of term limits. The district is 2,800 square miles, covering northern L.A. County from the county line down to Santa Clarita and the San Gabriel Valley.

It is our humble opinion that in such an important race as this, each candidate who is registered and on the ballot should not be excluded from participating in forums.

Organizations that exclude and play favoritism need to be held accountable for their actions and voters should demand nothing less.

Honors continue to flow to the Duarte High School athletics program after a successful winter season, including Coach of the Year for girls basketball coach Scott Wiard, individual honors for two players, and a professional honor for Athletic Director Robyn Garcia.

Wiard, a first-year head coach at the age of 25, was named Girls Basketball Coach of the Year by the San Gabriel Valley Tribune for leading the Lady Falcons to the CIF Championship before losing to St. Paul in the final seconds, 45-44. He is the son of legendary girls basketball coach Richard Wiard from Bishop Amat, a winner of the same award multiple times.

Wiard talked about the award and advancing to the CIF Finals, “It was an amazing experience to get to the CIF Finals,” he said. “I think it was very rewarding for the kids who worked so hard all year to accomplish something special.”

Two of the Duarte players, senior MacKenzie Barnes and sophomore Patricia Morris, were also honored on the All-San Gabriel Valley team as well as on the AllCIF-4AA team, a remarkable feat.

“I don’t think we’ve ever had two players AllCIF first team,” said Sims.

“It’s a very impressive accomplishment.”

Barnes averaged 15 points and six rebounds with five assists and was named the Montview League MVP. Morris is a six-foot-seven-inch sophomore who averaged 12 points and 11 rebounds per game and was also named to the Montview

Additionally, junior guard Ryley Thompson was named to the second team All-San Gabriel Valley and second team AllCIF teams. Thompson averaged 13 points and four rebounds per game.

Wiard talked about what made his team special this year in an interview with the Tribune.

“This year proves that you can still be successful in high school with kids from the same neighborhood if they believe in each other and have a common goal,” he said.

Duarte’s run to the championship included a 43-42 semifinal win at Lompoc which propelled the Lady Falcons into the finals.

“That game defined who we were so well,” said Wiard. “The walkthrough and pre-game were business-like because we knew we had a job do. Then we stressed what we did all year: ‘21 minutes of us,’ and we overcame them jumping to an early lead.”

In addition to the

basketball team’s honors, Duarte Athletic Director Garcia was honored by the California State Athletic Directors Association (CSADA) as its athletic director of the year for the CIF Southern Section.

“I felt very humbled,” said Garcia, who received the award at a banquet in San Diego. She singled out her assistant, Wendy Moreno, for helping her gain the recognition.

Duarte is having a banner year in sports, in addition to girls’ basketball. The girls’ volleyball team went to CIF quarterfinals, girls’ tennis and soccer made playoffs appearances, both boys and girls in wrestling went to CIF, “and we’re hopeful that both softball and baseball can also go to the CIF playoffs as well,” Garcia added.

“That award was voted by her peers,” said Sims. “She does a lot of outside work, with the various associations, work not necessarily associated with our school athletics program.”
