Walk Through San Gabriel History With May 14 Tours

The tours will include iconic San Gabriel sites such as the San Gabriel Mission.

On Saturday, May 14, the City of San Gabriel, in partnership with the San Gabriel Historical Association and Pasadena Heritage, will host guided walking tours of several historic sites in the city.

The tours will include iconic San Gabriel sites such as the San Gabriel Mission, the Lopez de Lowther Adobe, the historic Mission District, museums, and the Mission Playhouse. Tickets for the tour are $18 for Pasadena Heritage members and $22 for non-members. Tickets are now on sale and can be purchased online atwww. pasadenaheritage.org or by calling (626) 441-6333.

The tour is just one part of the city’s participation in National Historic Preservation Month this May. The city council will issue a proclamation on May 3 and all month long the city will feature information on local history and highlight the city’s historic preservation efforts on social media, in the Council Weekly city newsletter and other communications.

In addition, the city will continue to work, in conjunction with the community, on the update to the Historic Preservation Ordinance. A draft of the new ordinance will be released for review in May. The Mission also features a remarkable museum that is a must for any history buff.

Schiff Gravely Disappointed Obama Is Leaving Office Without Fulfilling Commitment to Recognize Armenian Genocide Representative Adam Schiff (D-Burbank), the lead sponsor of the Armenian Genocide Truth and Justice Resolution in Congress, released the following statement after President Obama did not use the word "genocide" to describe the Armenian Genocide ahead of Sunday's commemoration: “I’m gravely disappointed that President Obama will now leave office without fulfilling his commitment to recognize the Armenian

Genocide. For a president who knows the history so well, who spoke so passionately about the genocide as a senator and presidential candidate, and who has always championed human rights, the choice of silence and complicity is all the more painfully inexplicable.

Remaining silent in an effort to curry favor with Turkey is as morally indefensible as it will be ineffectual.

"How many administrations must be intimi-

dated into silence before we realize that it never changes Turkish behavior for the better and only emboldens the increasingly authoritarian regime? Recognition of the Armenian Genocide

could have been a proud part of the president's legacy; instead this decision will be just another sad milestone in the struggle to prevent genocide by exposing genocide and its perpe-

trators."

This past week, Schiff spoke on the House Floor and delivered an open letter to the President of the United States, Barack Obama, urging him to recognize the

Armenian Genocide in his final year in office in advance of the 101st anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. The commemoration of the genocide took place on Sunday, April 24.

Parking Is Such Sweet Sorrow

The decision by the Pasadena City Council to immobilize vehicles by adding a boot to the wheel could take full effect as soon as October of this year. The council made the decision on April 18 to add a boot to cars whose owners have five or more unpaid parking citations.

The city attorney must draft an ordinance within the next 60 days to change the Pasadena Municipal Code about the consequence of booting cars with multiple unanswered citations instead of towing them.

The Parking Division of the Pasadena Department of Transportation brought the amendment to the council Monday, April 18 in order to switch to a more efficient way of addressing the consequences of five or more past due citations.

“The booting approach would reduce the time and activities needed to immobilize a vehicle and for a vehicle owner to recover the use of the vehicle impounded for non-payment of parking citations,” it wrote in the agenda report released the day of the council meeting. “Instead of having to travel to the impound yards that are all outside of Pasadena, a booting program would allow drivers to pay the boot fee and their past due citations and have the boot removed without having to leave the city.”

Although the city will continue to tow vehicles in other cases, such as those parked in tow-away zones or blocked driveways, the department of transportation felt it unnecessary to apply the same consequence to

vehicle owners with overdue parking tickets.

Yet, the instructions of removal for the placed boots would not be addressed until a clear system is put in place for the booting program.

Therefore, there was no say thus far on the hassle for vehicle owners in removing the boot, just that the impounding system would be more hassle.

The agenda report also stated that the cost of the booting program “may result in a higher overall rate of collections for overdue citations that would benefit the city's General Fund.” Thus, even with the news that those who are prone to overdue parking citations strictly enforced in the City of Pasadena would have a less time- consuming option for losing their vehicle, the hike in citation fees could make the deal less appealing. Also, if the owner of the booted car cannot pay the removal fee and citation fines on time, the vehicle may be impounded anyways, or fined further, if parked on a street with parking limitations while immobilized.

The boot fee has gone up yearly and is about $154 now, although with the new program being put in place for October of 2016, the fee could be even more than that, as could parking citation fees.

The change in means of vehicle immobilization by the city may be a more timeefficient system, but it may also not be something to rejoice about for the car owners of Pasadena. Whether the choice by the city council is truly one that benefits Pasadena or not, it is up to the local drivers facing these consequences to decide.

The Monrovia City Council has approved the funds for the Monrovia Renewal Project. This program looks to repair the city’s basic infrastructure.

Among other actions, the council approved an increase to the sewer and water fees to pay for repairs to those systems while using various other funding

sources to make repairs to the city’s streets.

The city has described the project as “a multi-year initiative to address priority repairs to aging infrastructure across the city.”

In order to insure that the repair work is done in a timely and orderly manner, the council appointed an oversight committee

to watch over the project.

This committee will meet on Wednesday, May 11, at 7 p.m. in the Community Room at Monrovia Public Library. According to City Manager Oliver Chi, this meeting is an opportunity for members of the community to “learn what’s in the works and get your questions answered.”

Justice for Homicide Victims: Building Trust and Restoring Hope

By Joan Scmhidt Thirty-two years ago, two brave special mothers, “Lenny” (Ellen Griffin) Dunne and Marcella Nicolas Leach founded “Justice for Homicide Victims.”

Both mothers experienced the brutal murders of their beautiful daughters.

Dominique Dunne was killed by a former boyfriend who failed in two prior attempts to strangle her. His trial was a farce; manslaughter conviction and three years in prison; the jury was not allowed to hear his former girlfriend’s testimony. A year later, Marsalee Ann Nicolas (Marsy) was murdered by her ex-boyfriend. He was arrested, but out on $50,000 bail. A week after her daughter’s funeral, Marcella met the murderer at the market! No one told her he was released.

This is why Justice for Homicide Victims (JHV) began. Two years ago, I met Leach and Dunne’s two sons, who spoke at the 30th anniversary; I was in awe of how these victims of tragedy could fight tirelessly for reform and help others.

This year’s memorial’s theme was “Building Trust and Restoring Hope.”

The program had three outstanding speakers, State Senator Bob Huff, San Bernardino District Attorney Mike Ramos, and LA County Supervisor Mike Antonovich.

They noted Prop 47, AB 109, and a rise in crime, spoke with compassion for all victims, urged everyone to serve on juries to ensure justice, research death penalty reforms, and praised the two

honored deputy district attorneys.

The two deputy district attorney honorees were Robert Villa and Sakira Kim. Villa got a conviction for the brutal murderer of the Tarin family, father Alfredo, son, A.D. and daughter, Serena. Surviving daughter Valerie bravely recounted the horror as surviving mom fought tears. The murderer brought gasoline, poured it in front of the house to trap the family inside, and entered with an assault rifle firing 50-plus shots. For his tenacity and refusal to give up, Villa was honored.

Deputy District Attorney Kim was relentless in getting the conviction of the coward who killed five year old, Aaron Shannon, Jr., William Shannon, the brave grandfather, explained that awful day.

He bought a Spiderman costume for Aaron and planned attend a Halloween party at 2 p.m. Aaron put on his costume and went out back to show his grandfather and uncle. The murderer came down the street and just fired into the yard, killing Aaron.

The first trial had a hung jury and William was discouraged but met Kim. She brought the case to a second trial, also hung jury. But at the third trial, Kim got the conviction.

In between the speakers and honorees, we were treated to the International Peace Choir. These talented youths wore costumes from various countries.

MONROVIA April 23 At 2:03 a.m., an officer observed a vehicle commit a vehicle code violation and attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver sped up and made several turning movements to evade the officer. The officer lost

sight of the vehicle, but relocated it in the 300 block of South California. The driver stopped the vehicle, but fled on foot. He was quickly detained in an alley, east of California. The investigation revealed the suspect is an unlicensed juvenile who had taken his father’s vehicle without permission. The suspect sustained a minor injury while being taken into custody and was taken to the

hospital for medical clearance. He was then processed for the charges and later released to a parent with a citation to appear in court.

April 24

At 2:18 a.m., an officer observed a vehicle commit a vehicle code violation and made a traffic stop. While contacting the driver, the

officer noticed signs of intoxication. Investigation revealed the driver was driving under the influence. He was arrested for DUI and held for a sobering period.

TEMPLE CITY

April 19.

A Possession of a Controlled Substance arrest of a MH/49 was made at 3:39 p.m., at Kauffman Avenue and Las Tunas Drive. Deputies contacted the suspect regarding a disturbance call and discovered he had an outstanding warrant and possessed narcotics.

April 20

A vehicle burglary occurred between April 19 at 7 p.m. and April 20 at 6:30 a.m., in the 5300 block of Encinita Avenue.

A structure fire occurred at 12:12 p.m., in the 5200 block of Halifax Road.

A Noise Within (ANW), the classical theatre repertory company based in Pasadena, is celebrating its 25th anniversary. Founders and Producing Artistic Directors Geoff Elliott and Julia Rodriguez-Elliott still find it amazing that they have reached that milestone.

“If someone were to tell me a decade ago, when we were still in the cold, leaky Masonic Temple in Glendale, that I would be standing here in front of you today, I would never have believed it. I would have loved to hear it but I could not have imagined it to be the case. And yet here I am; it’s simply beyond our wildest dreams,” Elliott humbly confessed before an audience of theatre supporters, artists-in-residence, and a few members of the press.

This past Tuesday, April 19, ANW officially began its 25th year celebration and unveiled its growth plans as well as the slate of play offerings for the 2016-2017 season. Michael Bateman, managing director, who opened that evening’s event, described how the company plans to build on its

By Terry Miller Like the famous Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, and the 1931 jazz standard that Armstrong recorded in 1932 … there is proof positive in Pasadena that some people are really hip and immerse themselves in the ancient ritual of dance.

As a result of the collaboration between six of California’s most talented ballroom dance instructors and coaches, Dance Street recently opened a studio of dance in east Pasadena.

The new studio at 1715 E. Colorado represents a revolutionary new presence in the Los Angeles social and competitive dance scene and word is spreading like wildfire.

We met Sean Brunell and Laurel Rose Saturday night, April 23, at a kind of open house. In this particular instance, Dance Street concentrated its efforts on Swing and the classics from 1930s. The energy in the room was electric, eclectic, and astonishing. One almost felt a time warp back to the 1930s with not only the tunes but the duds.

Alongside a rather cool band, Brunell and Rose strutted their stuff, as did scores of eager participants.

Complete with spats, cool 1930s to 1940s outfits, the band’s singer, also an accomplished dancer, led the evening off with some true classic tunes to spin your partner back to the future.

Duarte Unified School District (DUSD) is pleased to announce that Beardslee Elementary will soon receive new musical instruments, thanks to The Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation (MHOF).

The MHOF helps underserved schools with minimal budgets by donating new instruments, often replacing some that are more than 30 years old.

An application for support was submitted by Beardslee Elementary and the MHOF found their program to be a worthwhile

investment, allowing more students to be able to play and experience the benefits of music education.

Beardslee Elementary will receive 56 new instruments - valued to be worth $67,148 - generously funded by StubHub, one of the world’s largest event ticket marketplaces.

Principal Jeni Romero and band instructor Rafael Arenas from Beardslee Elementary were directly involved in the application process and expressed their delight and gratitude upon

learning of the awarded donation.

It is amazing to note that prior to 2013, there were not any formal music programs offered at Beardslee or any elementary school within the district.

Today, because of the generous support of the Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation, Duarte Education Foundation, Arts for All and VH1 Save the Music Foundation, next year all fourth through sixth grade students at Beardslee will have the opportunity to participate in band.

The next classes of the day included language arts, which focused on the high school placement tests as well as creative writing and storytelling, and a leadership class that pushed the

“Seeing Lily discuss women’s empowerment and women’s issues in class really helped her grow,” said Melanie. “Her self-esteem improved as she looked differently at how women and girls were portrayed in the media and print. It opened a door for us to discuss issues from politics to magazine covers to music videos.”

Following lunch, the students attended Creative Narratives as well as Healthy

free, easy-to-use computer science enrichment materials that target and engage diverse student populations.

Oh also created the Girls’ Club at La Rosa, which is designed specifically for girls and technology, and is currently mentoring a team of middle school girls competing in the Technovation competition, a Global Technology Entrepreneurship Program for girls.

Lifestyles. In Creative Narratives, students got to use their imagination, personal experience, and background to create their visual stories.

In Healthy Lifestyles, students had the opportunity to engage in a range of activities that involved the world of health, including health for the mind, body and soul.

“The Creative Narratives class was my favorite class at the Conservatory,” said Lily.

“I have never really enjoyed art classes that much but Mr. Lewis found a way that made art fun to me and I really enjoyed it.”

By the end of the program, Lily was convinced that Alverno was the school for her but she was also confident in who she had grown into as a woman and the new friends she had made.

When asked if she would recommend the program to another girl, Lily did not hesitate.

“I would highly recommend it,” she said. “I had great fun getting to know the teachers and forming a bond with some of the girls that I keep to this day. Through the Conservatory, I got a feel of the school, the way the teach-

ers presented their classes, and because of it I fell in love with the school.”

Her mother seconded her answer.

“We are so grateful for the wonderful experience that the Conservatory gave our daughter,” she said.

“Watching her decide that this was the school for her and that she wanted to improve her grades to get there was incredible. I loved that a door was opened for us to discuss self-esteem and how women are portrayed. We would whole heartedly recommend the experience to anyone.”

Once they obtained their research for their articles, they began the writing process and produced wonderful articles on wellness, nutrition, and community health services which were published in their student created newspaper, The Mountain View Voices.

A special celebration was recently held to honor the young journalists for their hard work and dedication.

Dispelling the Myths About Autism

s National Autism Awareness Months comes to a close there are still numerous myths that circulate about what autism is and how to “deal with” autistic individuals. Compiled below is a list of those myths and the responses from those with autism, as well as from the medical community at large.

Myth #1: There is an Autism epidemic.

It is often touted that there is an autism epidemic that has arisen in our society due to a variety of causes. In truth, autism is no more common now than it was decades ago. It is a neurodevelopmental disorder, which means it effects the way our brains develop and how it processes information. It is only within the last few decades that we have begun to make great strides in understanding exactly how our brains develop and what effects its development.

It is also important to recognize that the definition of what Autism is has also changed. Autism had a very narrow definition until the late 1980’s. It was only during that time that the idea of a spectrum was introduced to the definition. This caused those that were previously undiagnosed, or misdiag-

nosed, to now fall under the definition of having autism.

Myth #2: People with Autism do not have or cannot feel emotions.

This is actually the complete opposite of what happens. Individuals on the autistic spectrum have the same range and depth of emotions that everyone else does, they just do not process them in the same way. Many of the social and emotional interactions that happen around us are too nuanced for a person on the spectrum to pick up on.

Often times an autistic person has a great deal of empathy and concern for the people around them, but they do not know how to deal with their own emotions leaving them paralyzed or frustrated with the mental overload of their own inadequacy.

Myth #3: A lot of Autistic individuals have some sort of savant ability, in one capacity or another.

This is partially true.

There are some autistic individuals who have extraordinary abilities when it comes to mathematical, musical or artistic skills, but they are by no means a majority. The ability of an autistic individuals has often been illustrated as a linear progression. However, it has recently begun to be outlined in a more accurate polygon chart. While some

individuals may need lifelong care and have extreme difficulty living on their own, other individuals may pass virtually unnoticed as being autistic. It is a highly individualized disorder and must be recognized as such.

Temple City Middle Schooler Has ‘Girl Power’!

Few eighth graders hold a national record in any sport, but Temple City’s Amber Grace, a petite middle schooler, can be called the strongest 13-year-old, 100-pound girl in America.

On March 18, Grace participated in a US Power-

lifting Association’s (USPA) state competition in Whittier, where she broke California and American records for girls ages 13 to 15, weighing less than 105 pounds, in two of the sport’s three events: squat, deadlift, and bench press.

Grace’s deadlift and squat scores, plus her total score of 434 pounds, set new American records age and weight class for girls. And she did it with style, accessorizing her black “singlet” – the mandatory short one-piece black jumpsuit – with a pink lifting belt and Wonder Woman socks.

Like many star athletes, Grace’s accomplishments began with obstacles. She had tried out for the Oak Avenue Intermediate School’s volleyball, basketball, and cheerleading teams, but was turned down by each – the first two perhaps because of her short stature – she is just shy of 5-feet-tall.

Grace’s parents, Wendy and Chris Grace of Temple City, own the Mission Fitness Center on Mission Street in San Marino and they are both personal trainers. Chris, 44, set state records in powerlifting last year. Amber goes to the gym every day after school to do her homework in the office – and occasionally to play

on the equipment - but she had never shown any interest in serious training.

Until last July, after she had been turned down by her school’s athletic teams, Grace watched her father lifting barbells, and something clicked.

“I asked my dad if I could do it too and he said, ‘yes!’ It took off from there!” revealed Grace.

She trained for three months, working mostly on posture rather than weight.

At her first meet last October, Grace set state records, with a 121-pound squat, a 66-pound bench press, and a 153-pound deadlift. When the meet was over, Grace continued to train with her father and her mom, Wendy Grace, 44, trained alongside her as a first-time competitor.

They trained for about 90 minutes a day, four-to-five days a week. Training is not just about increasing loads.

In competition, judges tell contestants when to pick up the barbell, when to move it, when to pause, and when to let go. Obeying those complicated cues and maintaining form and balance are as important as muscle power.

After the triumphant meet on March 18, Grace took a week off. But now she is back at it. “I’m just going to build strength for the next six months,” she says. “Then I’ll probably compete again to set higher American records.

Grace says that participating in the sport has given her more self-confidence. “Before powerlifting, everyone made fun of me because of my height; now they wouldn’t dare. Also, a lot of people used to pick on my friends; when that happens, I go talk to them and they stop bothering my friends.”

Her accomplishments also caused her teachers to rethink assumptions. “One of our teachers was looking for a student to carry the heavy dragon’s tail for a Chinese New Year dance,” Grace recalls. “The teacher said, ‘this tail is really heavy, we need a boy to carry it.’” But Grace volunteered. “The teacher said, ‘I need to see who can lift it above their heads.’ When the boys tried, they all complained about it being heavy.

I went to lift it and it felt like maybe about 15 to 20 pounds.

It was easy! I showed the instructor that just because I’m a girl it doesn’t mean that I’m not strong. Don’t judge a book by its cover!” explained Grace.

On the Monday after the meet, Grace wore the gold medal she had earned to school. Her teachers were thrilled and the vice principal announced her accomplishment on the PA system. “Everyone congratulated me. My math teacher told me he was shocked that someone so tiny could be so strong!”

Her mother, Wendy, also did well at the meet, setting three state records for her age and 120-pound weight class, with a 110- pound bench press, a 215-pound squat, and a 265-pound deadlift.

Chris, who trained both of them, says he could not be more proud, especially of the way Amber stuck to her program, “There were days she didn’t want to lift. That’s only human nature. But she came through. Now that she’s put in the work and accomplished her huge goal, we hope the confidence transitions to other things. Understanding that seven months of hard work pays off is an incredible lesson.”
