Murder suspect Deyun “Jeff” Shi, 44, appeared in Pasadena Superior Court on Monday, April 18, to face arraignment of the brutal slaying of his two nephews on Jan 22.

Attorney Barry L. Greenhalgh and a Mandarin interpreter were present at the initial appearance in front of Judge Terry Smerling.

The suspect in the double homicides appeared non-responsive to questions posed and kept his head down and eyes closed while attorneys and a translator described the pending charges. He remained head down and eyes closed for the initial proceeding and appeared not to utter a word.

The arraignment was delayed until May 2. Shi also allegedly attacked his estranged wife with a wood-splitting tool then bludgeoned to death his two teenage nephews on Jan. 22.

As El Nino Disappoints in Southern California, La Nina Beckons a New Fear

By Annette Semerdjian The highly anticipated rainfall from El Niño early this year failed to deliver relief from years of drought in Southern California. The successor to El Niño, La Niña, often brings drier winters, which may further the already record-breaking drought.

Fluctuation in average ocean temperatures cause the phenomena known as El Niño and La Niña, which are irregular weather patterns that occur once every several years. Experts anticipated this year to have been like the last famous El Niño in the winter of 1997 through 1998 with 30 inches of rain. Without the much needed help from El Niño, Southern California could face drier winters. Although La Niña tends to bring cooler temperatures, it does not always entail precipitation.

Climatologist with NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Bill Patzert, said each El Niño “has its own personality and this one was definitely not normal.”

Northern California received its fair share of rainfall and snowpacks, but failed to reach Southern California as experts had predicted.

“Every once in a while El Niño misbehaves,” said Patzert.

Snowpacks on top of mountains are essential sources for water because after melting in the spring and summer they turn into fresh water rivers and streams. “What meager snowpacks remain in the Sierras, eve-

rybody up and down the state is going to fight for it,” Patzert said. “But the fact is we’re still in a drought.”

As California struggles for sustainability in such dry conditions, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works even resorted to a weather modification technology known as cloud seeding. In early March of this year, LA County used cloud seeding technology for the first time since March of 2002. In a 2016 fact sheet, the LA County Department of Public Works described cloud seeding as “increasing the amount of rainfall produced from clouds” by “tiny particles called ice nuclei to the clouds.”

In terms of resorting to such technology in weather modification by the county, Patzert said, “Cloud seeding is a total waste of money.’

“First thing you have to do is you have to have clouds to seed,” he said.

“When you seed clouds you might change the locale regionally where the rain falls, but you’re not going to produce any large scale improvement in rainfall.”

Even with the 1.5 billion gallons of rainfall that would be gained from cloud seeding, it does not even begin to put a dent NASA’s estimated 11 trillion gallons needed to end the drought.

“There’s not going to be a late April, early May miracle,” Patzert said in regards to a sliver of hope for more El Niño rain in Southern California. With the unpredictable La Niña ahead,

Patzert instead suggested that allocation of the water we already have is crucial, especially when the United States uses much more water than other countries to produce the same products.

As for water usage in households, Patzert suggested better water efficiency and continued restriction on excessive water usage.

“In California, everybody could cut their water usage

by 50 percent – even Oprah,” he said.

Although experts may disagree on active resolution to the unwavering drought in Southern California, most agree that there

is no quick solution and an end to the drought could take many years to come.

Patzert offered one hope after a dry El Niño winter, “a wet La Niña winter is our longshot.”

The city council has voted to introduce a Plastic Bag Ban. The ban, championed

by Councilmember Tom Beck would prohibit plastic bags from being distributed by stores like Vons and 7-Eleven but would allow them to offer paper bags for 10 cents. “I’m embarrassed that we haven’t banned single use plastic bags,” Beck said.

Beck first proposed the ban in 2014 when the state was considering its own legislation restricting plastic bag use. The council voted to leave it to the state. Governor Jerry Brown signed the ban into law but opponents gathered enough signatures to put a referendum on it, pushing the decision to the voters this November. Should this pass, the state’s ban, which Arcadia’s was modeled after, will take precedence.

This was a sticking point in the council’s discussion. “I think we can wait for the statewide election,” Mayor Pro Tem Roger Chandler said. Councilmember Sho

Residents voiced other concerns with the proposed ban during the public comments. Gail Marshall raised the issue of E. coli and salmonella contamination in dirty reusable bags among other issues, calling the plastic bag ban trend an “eco-fad.” According to the government food safety website, (http:// www.foodsafety.gov/) it is possible for bacteria to grow if the bags are not washed between uses especially if there is a spill from items like raw meat. “You’d be amazed what will show up under a microscope,” said Chandler.

Dean Raydell, the next speaker wanted the council to educate the public more about the ban. He cited the March 9 workshop on the issue, which was attended by “only a handful of residents.”

He suggested holding more workshops and postponing the decision until more voter input could be obtained. The final speaker was Bill Barrett, who also opposed the ban, saying the plastic bags had a multitude of uses and were recyclable.

“Thirteen billion plastic bags are discarded every year,” says Beck. He pointed out 147 California cities and counties have banned plastic bags. He cited San Jose, saying the city saw bag refuse decrease 89 percent in their storm drains, 59 percent in their streets, and 60 percent in their waterways after enacting their ban. “California spends $25 million dollars a year to landfill plastic bag waste,” he said. “We need to be more progressive in protecting our environment.”

Should Arcadia’s ban pass it would be implemented in two stages. The first would start June 7 and restrict bags at “large self-service retail stores” like Vons according to the Staff Report. The second would become effective Jan. 1, 2017, and cover “[a]ny drug store, pharmacy, supermarket, grocery store, convenience food store, food mart,” such as 7-Eleven. Restaurants and fast food establishments would be exempt.

The ban was approved for introduction with Beck, Mayor Gary Kovacic, and Councilmember Mickey Segal in favor, and Tay and Chandler against.

The new council will be sworn in next Tuesday with a 6 p.m. reception honoring the election’s winners before the 7 p.m. council meeting.

Arcadia Police Respond to Commercial Burglary, Suspects at Large

On April 19, at approximately 12:15 p.m., Arcadia Police responded to a commercial burglary that occurred at 411 E. Huntington Drive, Prince Jewelers. Two suspects smashed the front display window of the jewelry store and stole several pieces of jewelry and fled the area. The store was open at the time of the burglary; however, the suspects did not enter the business.

Suspect 1 was described as a male, White or Hispanic, approximately 5-feet-8-inches to 5-feet10-inches tall, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, tan shorts, and black sneakers. Suspect 2 had a thin

build, was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, a green bandana covering the face, black pants, and black sneakers with white trim around the bottom. It is unknown if the second suspect was a male or a female.

MONROVIA April 16 At 12:07 a.m., officers stopped a vehicle in the area of Shamrock and Huntington for a vehicle code violation and discovered the driver had been drinking. After investigation, the driver was determined to be driving under the influence and was arrested, taken into custody and held for sobering.

At 9:26 a.m., a business owner in the 2600 block of South Peck called police regarding a burglary. The suspects jumped a rear fence and broke a large window on a rear door to enter the business. A laptop, television, power drill, and miscellaneous garden tools were taken.

The investigation is continuing.

At 12:01 p.m., an officer responded to the 900 block of West Huntington regarding a traffic incident. A bicyclist was heading eastbound on the north sidewalk of Huntington. The bicyclist veered onto the street because of

pedestrians on the sidewalk and got his wheel stuck in a groove, causing him to fall into the lane of traffic. He was struck by a vehicle traveling westbound at approximately 20 mile per hour. The bicyclist refused medical treatment and left the scene on his bike.

At 12:18 p.m., a resident in the 500 block of East Cherry called police to report a burglary. The resident arrived home at approximately 1 p.m.

He was sitting in a chair dosing off while watching television in his living room when he heard noise from a back bedroom. He thought it was his child and was not concerned. When he awoke in the morning, he remembered that his child had slept at a friend’s house. He went to check the back bedroom and found the window screen off and the window open. The resident said nothing was taken. The investigation is continuing.

At 9:59 p.m., a business in the 500 block of West Huntington called police to report three suspects concealing merchandise inside the store.

When the officers arrived,

they located one suspect outside and he was detained.

Two additional suspects were detained when they exited the store a short time later.

During the incident, the first suspect walked up to a vehicle prior to being detained.

Police could see inside the vehicle and observed a credit card embossing machine, large amounts of mail, tax information, and other suspicious items. The vehicle belonged to one of the suspects and was eventually searched and stored. All three suspects were arrested and taken into custody.

April 17

At 11:03 p.m., a resident called police from the 100 block of Maple reporting three to five subjects on the roof of a business. Officers responded and found fresh graffiti on the roof. No suspects were detained. The investigation is continuing.

April 18

At 3:10 a.m., an officer was dispatched to the 500 block of Diamond regarding a traffic collision. The

vehicle was driving west on Diamond and collided with two parked vehicles, causing the vehicle to roll over on its side. The driver was taken to a hospital with complaint of pain. The driver appeared to have been intoxicated at the time of the collision.

The driver admitted to being intoxicated and a verified complaint request will be submitted to the District Attorney’s Office.

PASADENA

April 14 At about 2 p.m., Pasadena Police officers responded to the area of Mountain Street and Oakland Avenue regarding a shots fired investigation. On arrival, PPD officers observed Male Hispanics running from the immediate area of the incident in their effort to evade the police. With the assistance of the Air Operations Crew, ground officers contained the area and the subjects were detained without incident. Our investigation determined that the call of shots fired was unfounded.

The sounds were caused by fireworks.

April 16

At about 11:40 a.m., Pasadena Police officers responded to 73 Pepper St. regarding a traffic accident. On arrival the officers learned the driver of a vehicle lost control striking several pedestrians.

Preliminary information suggests the driver was traveling slowly when she lost control of the car hitting the victims (the involved parties are all family members). The injuries included lacerations and blunt force trauma. At least one person was taken to a local area hospital for medical assessment.

At about 9:20 p.m., the

Pasadena Police Department received several calls of gunshots in the 1000 block of Summit Avenue. Officers patrolling the area confirmed hearing the shots and responded to investigate. They arrived quickly and located evidence of the shooting, however the officers did not locate any victims. A short time later, the police department received a call from a local area hospital stating there were two Black Male Adults (40s and 20s) who walked into the emergency room and reported they had been shot.

The gunshot wounds were not life threatening. PPD officers responded to the hospital to investigate.

ARCADIA

April 14 Around 11:32 a.m., an officer responded to the front counter of the Arcadia Police Department regarding a grand theft report. The victim claimed her wallet had been stolen from her purse while she was eating at Kirin Buffet inside the Santa Anita Mall, 400 S. Baldwin Ave. The wallet contained over $2,000 cash and several credit cards.

No suspects were seen. The investigation is ongoing.

April 15

At about 4:51 a.m., officers responded to the 3200 block of Fish Canyon Road in the City of Duarte regarding an activation of an Arcadia Police Department GPS tracker. Arcadia PD detectives had previously deployed decoy packages containing bait property and tracking devices to combat the increase in package thefts from residential areas. An investigation revealed a 27-year-old male from Duarte had the stolen package inside his vehicle and

the stolen property, and tracking device inside his home.

The suspect was arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking.

Just after 9 p.m., an officer conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle in the area of Holly Avenue and Longden Avenue for having a nonoperational brake light. Upon contacting the driver, the officer discovered the 30-year-old male from Arcadia was driving with a suspended license. The suspect was also in possession of a counterfeit driver’s license and had an outstanding warrant for his arrest. He was arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking.

The vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

April 16

Just after 2 p.m., officers responded to the front counter of the Arcadia Police Department regarding a battery that had occurred between juveniles. The reporting party claimed a known male juvenile, upset over crossing out of graffiti, responded to his home and punched his face several times. An investigation revealed the juvenile reporting the battery had vandalized several areas of Bonita Park (100 S. Second Ave.) with graffiti. The juvenile was cited and released to his mother. The investigation of the battery is ongoing.

At approximately 4:30 p.m., an officer responded to REI, 214 N. Santa Anita Ave., regarding a suspicious subject blocking pedestrian traffic at the entrance of the store.

Upon contacting the 26-yearold male from El Monte, the officer noticed symptoms of being under the influence of a controlled substance. After a series of tests, he was arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking.

Response to ‘Judge Rules in Favor of Removing Cross ... ’ (4/14/16 Issue)

Dear Editor: During the Cold War years, we learned that a sign of Democracy’s superiority is that the USSR would scrub away elements of their history that did not fit their current political narrative. This seems to be what is at work with Judge Snyder’s ruling to remove the (tiny) cross from the building on the logo which is supposed to represent the San Gabriel Mission. While she argues that the cross places the county’s “power, prestige, and purse” behind Christianity, it seems to me that her grudge is that the county wanted to acknowledge its historical roots at all. Only vampires or people with micro-thin skins would find such a small cross offensive. If any citizen or business

owner were to truly be penalized or intimidated because they were not Christian, then the ACLU would have a great lawsuit with damages aplenty!

If LA County was founded by Rabbis or Moors, it would be historically accurate to have some symbol representing Judaism or Islam. If a band of Richard Dawkins fans helped found the county, a logo of the Flying Spaghetti Monster would even be appropriate.

History tells us, however, that it was founded by Spaniards who brought Christian missionaries with them. Just because you may not like Spaniards and/or missionaries does not change that!

The county may give up the fight because there are probably more pressing issues that need the money. So in essence, they would cave in to a frivolous lawsuit. Meanwhile, it is a shame to see the ACLU, which championed important Civil Rights victories in the ‘50s and ‘60s, be reduced to being shake-down artists like those lawyers who sue small business owners because the angle of their access ramp is two degrees higher than the ADA laws require.

t is time to get in your car and head south to explore what is happening behind the “Orange Curtain.” Both The Orange County Museum of Art in Newport Beach and the Laguna Art Museum are showing two superb exhibitions.

- The Laguna Museum of Art is showing: “Helen Lundeberg: A Retrospective” – through May 30. Museum is located at 307 Cliff Drive in Laguna Beach. For more information, call (949) 494-8971 or visit http://lagunaartmuseum.org/helenlundeberg-a-retrospective.

Lundeberg (1908 – 1999) was a Southern California painter whom the majority of art enthusiasts and even a number of gallery owners may have never heard of, despite her critical success and large number of museum exhibitions. The retrospective features over 60 paintings; beginning with her Post-Surrealist works from the 1930s through her evolution in the 1950s toward pure abstraction as she explored landscapes, planetary systems, and architectural elements.

Her earlier Post-Surrealist paintings display the same technical virtuosity of surrealists such as Dali or Magritte, however, the subject matter is much more humanistic, introspective, or still life based. There are no melting clocks, giraffes on fire, or tigers awakening you from a dream. You have to stare a little longer at the paintings to interpret the possible symbolization or intent of the artist. Many of the older painting are done on Celotex; a fiber board that has significantly more texture than Masonite or canvas, giving the paintings additional dimension.

Artist in Time” illustrates the Post-Surrealism style.

It shows the young artist as a toddler in the foreground holding the stem of a plant and her shadow fading backwards into the older Lundeberg depicted in a portrait on the wall; her same right hand holding bloomed buds while contemplating the world before her.

The majority of Lundeberg’s works have a muted palate; even the purely abstract or planetary paintings rarely turn up the color amplitude too loud. That is not to say they are not visually arresting – the precision and hard edges are done masterfully. One of the most interesting aspects of the retrospective is the illustration of the breadth of Lundeberg’s work; you rarely see an artist with the ability to move from the technical demands of surreal portraiture to abstraction without missing a beat. Many artists remain in the same vein their whole career and paint either what sells or what’s in their comfort zone. Lundeberg was an exception.

Whereas Lundeberg painted with a more restrained palate and subject matter, Minter is the exact opposite. She turns up the volume all the way to provoke emotions, senses, and controversy at times. The colors, size, texture, and subject matter of her paintings grab your focus and does not let go for a minute. Although the exhibit includes her earlier work which shows off her strong photo realism painting skills and a series of photographs of her mother from 1969, the true excitement comes from her mega-sized paintings, photographs and videos featuring women’s eyes, lips, tongues, and feet in high heels up close. A note of caution: a small fraction of the paintings are “adult only” (appropriately located behind walls with warning).

My favorite work was “Orange Crush,” 2009, a massive 9-foot by 12-foot enamel on metal painting based on Minter’s “Green Pink Caviar” video from the same year. The video is a slow motion view of a gargantuan mouth sucking and slurping up liquefied candy from a glass plate (shot from below). The painting is provocative, suggestive, a color feast for the eyes. You have to step back to view such a large painting to appreciate the details, however, up close the texture and technique are still amazing. There are additional works featuring eyes covered in shimmering metallic make up; feet in high heels wrapped with shiny jewels and a red tongue covered in glistening black caviar.

The artists’ photography is just as challenging as her videos and paintings – most of which revolve around the same themes.

The stand out photo from the exhibit is “Black Orchid” from 2012, C-Print. The photo is of a woman’s face wearing dark blackberry lipstick shot behind a plate of glass with water streaming down in front of it. Unlike the paintings you have to view the photos from some distance otherwise you get a sense of the pixilation from the film that is absent in the analog and arguably more beautiful paintings. Gas up and go now!

The Fountain Pen Shop Inc. has been repairing and selling pens since 1922.

A true family operation, owner and president Fred Krinke’s grandfather started the business with a partner after moving to Southern California from New Jersey.

Krinke’s father took over the business in 1940, retired in 1975, and since then Krinke has been at the helm.

Although today it may seem as if Krinke was destined to fill this role, he did not always have pens on his mind, “I was really into music, I was going to Pasadena Junior College and then during World War II my folks said, ‘hey, we need somebody to come down and do some pen repairs because we’re so back-logged.’” So Krinke would attend school in the morning and then take the Pacific Electric Red Car downtown in the afternoon to help out around the store. This continued until the conclusion of the war when Krinke was drafted and subsequently served a year and a half in the US Air Force as a member of the postwar “Army of Occupation.”

“When I got out of the service my dad said, ‘well, you want to go to college or you want to repair pens?’” revealed Krinke, “I said, ‘well I’m having a good time repairing pens,’” and the rest was history.

Since then Krinke has honed his craft and today he is a master of what has become a lost art in this digital age. The Fountain Pen Shop is one of the few brick and mortar locations of its kind left and, in the words of Krinke, he is “the last of a dying breed.”

The shop’s path to its current Monrovia location has been a long one. Originally located at Sixth and Spring in downtown Los Angeles, the business began as

primarily a pen repair shop.

At the time, before the introduction of the ball-point pen, fountain pens were the writing instrument of choice and business was booming as they helped service everything from college book stores to large department stores. Eventually they moved to Fifth and Broadway in the jewelry district when their original building was demolished to make way for a new wave of high-rises. The store thrived at this new location until 1994 when the Northridge earthquake devastated their building. After moving across Pershing Square to Sixth and Olive for a few years, the San Gabriel Valley family finally decided in 1999 that the business would move one final time to Monrovia in order to avoid the downtown chaos and long daily commute.

Hong Kong where he fled after the double homicide. The 44-year-old Chinese national appeared at Pasadena Superior Court for an arraignment which was continued to May 2, according to court officials.

Prosecutors had charged Shi with killing 15-year-old Anthony Lin and 16-year-old William Lin in their Fairview Avenue Arcadia home on Jan. 22.

Shi’s wife filed for a temporary restraining order alleging domestic violence in December while his mother-in-law also sought a restraining order claiming elder abuse. Shi was served with the restraining order on Jan. 7.

Investigators alleged Shi broke into the Arcadia residence and beat his nephews to death. The boys’ mother discovered their bodies on Jan. 22.

After the fatal attack, detectives said Shi took a flight to Hong Kong where authorities immediately placed him under arrest on multiple counts. He was returned from Hong Kong under extradition orders Friday, April 15.

Shi is residing at Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles without bail.

Twelve-Year-Old Leila Wu Publishes Her Second Book By may ruiz In 12-year-old Leila Wu’s head, there are perfectly formed people with magical powers who inhabit earth and can also live in another world, quite apart from our idea of reality. She describes these individuals and the place they visit in vivid detail in her book, “The Mysterious World of Camelot.” It is the second installment in what she plans to be an ambitious 14-book series.

It all started with Jupiter – the planet – not the Roman god. Strange as that may sound, it was a research paper on the solar system that got then first-grader and six-year-old Wu interested in writing.

“I spent recess time researching and I learned about the red dot, a storm on Jupiter. I found it so engrossing that I wrote ten pages for what was a seven-page work assignment. My teacher, Mrs. Watts, had to stop me at that point because the class had moved on to Saturn,” recalls Wu, now a sixth grader at Clairbourn School in San Gabriel.

In second grade Wu wrote a little poem for Mothers’ Visiting Day that so

charmed her teacher, Denise Wreede, that she submitted it to Paw Print, the school’s student publication. Her mom, Monica, was both impressed and touched when she read it.

“I truly believe in passion first and foremost, and then in talent,” she discloses.

“I try to expose my two children to different experiences to give them a chance to find out what interests them. I told Leila she might consider writing a short story too, and she rose to the challenge. She decided to pen a novel with 12 chapters and proceeded to craft the table of contents.

She even knew how many pages she would devote to each chapter.”

Then Wu hit a bump on the road so Monica approached Wreede for assistance. Wreede relates, “I met with her twice or thrice a week after school, giving her direction and making her focus. She would stand by me and tell me what she wanted to write and I typed it. After we finished the first working draft, I handed it over to Stephen Rivele, who was then the Clairbourn parent staff for Paw Print.”

develop and polish the text and illustrations for the story, then took it to Amazon. And “The Mysterious Book of Magic” was published; Wu was eight years old. It introduces readers to the fantastic world of Jennifer and Josephine, twin sisters, and their mom, Madelin. The twins chance upon this mysterious book which a boy, named Arthur, has inadvertently lost.

That was the beginning of a friendship and a magical journey for the three young protagonists that Wu continues in the second installment called “The Mysterious World of Camelot.” Here, she establishes a darker universe

The Soroptimist Ruby Award, which acknowledges a woman who works to improve the lives of women and girls via her personal or professional activities, was given to Linda Offray, who founded Shepherd’s Door Domestic Violence Resource Center in 2000.

The Violet Richardson Award, which recognizes young high school women for demonstrating leadership by identifying a vital issue in their community and addressing it through their volunteer efforts, was given to 18-year-old Grace Rickert of La Canada.

The guest of honor was Mayor Gary Kovacic, who brought the First Lady of Arcadia, his wife Barbara, who assisted with his outstanding Power Point program on the early days of Arcadia, “Those were the Days!”

It was one of the last appearances for the mayor, as he was termed out the following week of April 12, Election Day. Goodbyes were rather misty eyed.

The May meeting will feature Mike Vercillo from the Arcadia Police Department. The club’s year will end with a Gala Installation Luncheon at their June meeting. A summer party is being planned.

Concerned that former Assemblyman Donnelly was cited and released after carrying a loaded firearm on an aircraft, a Southern California assemblywoman proposed a new state law to require that such offenders be arrested and taken into custody after similar incidents. Donnelly only received a slap on the wrist for such a potentially catastrophic oversight on his behalf.

Assemblywoman Norma Torres contends that bringing a loaded gun into a passenger airport is a serious violation and that the state should treat offenders consistently - with a jail booking, not a ticket.

And, if diagnosed at an early age, there are services and treatments that may mitigate the impact autism has on the rest of a child’s development. It is important to know that not everyone with autism is the same.

That is the reason behind calling this neurological condition Autism Spectrum Disorder.

On one end of this spectrum there will be individuals who are autistic, but will never really know or recognize themselves as being so.

And then there will be those that are severely affected by autism and will need continual care throughout their lives. Listed below are some common behavioral traits that may serve as early indicators of possible autism.

They last squared off on March 22 at South Pasadena, which went 10 innings. In

the end, Monrovia was able to score two runs in the 10th inning to snag the 5-3 win.

Last appearance Ramos had against the Tigers, he came in to a tied game at 2-2 and pitched another brilliant five innings with 8 strikeouts, 1 walk, and 0 earned runs, earning himself the win and the helping the Wildcats to victory.

It appears that Isaiah Ramos might just be the Tigers “Kryptonite.”

Monrovia’s offense came out hot, scoring four runs in the first inning against South Pasadena’s starting pitcher Kevin Patrick (#20). It began with Marcelo Vega (#2) hitting a grounder to second base - the ball was bobbled and Vega was able to reach first safely. James Wright (#5) pulled a sacrifice bunt, advancing the runner to second, followed by a walk from Gabriel Arellano (#21). After a passed ball the Wildcats had a man on first and third.

Patrick walked, scoring Vega and advancing Arellano to second. With a 1-0 lead, Ramos ripped a single to left field, right back to men on first and third.

This brought up Monrovia’s designated hitter, Ben Goettling (#26), who hit a hard ground ball to right field whose throw to third was off the mark, allowing both runners to score, Goettling to advance to second, and gave the Wild-

cats a 3-0 lead. Their last run in the fourth came from Jayden Scott (#27) whose blooper to rightcenter scored Goettling, extending the lead to 4-0.

Scott was then thrown out at first base after an over stretched lead.

The Wildcat’s tacked on three more runs in the second inning when the bases were loaded, thanks to a walk from Anthony Ramirez (#13), Vega being hit by a pitch, and Wright with an infield grounder that bounced off the pitcher. Arellano stepped up and knocked a hard grounder up the middle scoring two runs, making it 6-0, and advancing runners to second and third.

This lead to Jacob Luevano (#5) stepping in for South Pasadena’s Kevin Patrick on the mound. Isaiah Ramos grounded out to second but received an RBI for Wright crossing the plate, which brought the score to 7-0.

The rest of the game petered out and the Wildcats took home their fifth win in league and remain undefeated. Both teams will face each other this Friday at South Pasadena at 3:30 p.m. Let us see if the Tigers can bounce back or if the Wildcats continue their hot streak in league.
