Two Killed in Pasadena Traffic Collision at Lake Avenue and E. Villa Street Police Say Excessive Speed Was Involved Two people were killed and two others serious injured Wednesday morning in a traffic crash in Pasadena, authorities said. The crash happened
about 7 a.m. at Lake Avenue and East Villa Street, Lisa Derderian of the Pasadena Fire Department said. Pasadena police said a maroon Ford Mustang was
traveling southbound on Lake Avenue, when a blue SUV turned left onto East Villa Street in front of the Mustang. The cars collided, sending the Mustang into a
light pole. The driver of the Mustang died at the scene, and the front passenger died after being transported to a hospital.

El Monte Hosts Successful Consumer Protection Town Hall and Resource Fair
The City of El Monte cohosted a special Consumer Protection Town Hall and Resource Fair with Supervisor Hilda Solis and the County of Los Angeles Department of Consumer and Business Affairs (DCBA) on Thursday, March 17. The event, which took place at the Grace T. Black Auditorium in El Monte, featured more than a dozen representatives from state and county agencies offering valuable information on services and resources available to residents. Represented agencies included the Department of Mental Health, Community and Senior Services, and the Department of Business Oversight. In addition to the resource fair, the DCBA offered

The Youth Advisory Council consists of seven members appointed by the City Council. MONROVIA March 26 At 2:14 a.m., an officer observed a vehicle commit a vehicle code violation traveling north on Peck at Live Oak. The officer conducted a traffic stop and contacted the driver. After further investigation, the officer determined the driver was driving under the influence of alcohol. The suspect was arrested, held for a sobering period and later released with a citation to appear in court.
At 2:58 a.m., officers were dispatched to the intersection of Huntington and Ivy regarding a solo vehicle traffic collision. The investigation revealed the driver was driving under the influence of alcohol, lost control of his vehicle and struck the curb in the intersection. A passenger in the suspect’s vehicle was injured during the collision and was taken to the hospital for treatment. The suspect was arrested for felony DUI and held pending his court appearance.
At 10:37 a.m., an officer responded to the 200 block of West Cherry regarding a domestic dispute. When officers arrived, the female victim told them she was involved in an argument with her boyfriend. She reported that he choked her, hit her, and threw keys at her, causing visible injuries. The suspect was still at the location and was uncooperative. The suspect was arrested for domestic violence and taken into custody. At 7:40 p.m., officers were on patrol in the area of Primrose and Pomona when they heard a woman screaming. The officers located a male and female involved in a verbal altercation. A consent search of their vehicle resulted in the discovery of a notebook that belonged to the male suspect. The notebook was found to contain personal, identifying information from multiple victims. The suspect was arrested for identity theft and held until his court appearance. At 10:48 p.m., a victim called police and reported he was robbed at gunpoint
by four male subjects at Canyon and Colorado. The victim stated the suspects were all wearing blue bandanas and all had semi-automatic handguns. The suspects ransacked the victim’s vehicle and stole his wallet and skateboard. The suspects fled south on foot, but were not located after an extensive search. Later, the victim called and stated he found his wallet in a nearby alley. During the robbery, the suspects made statements about belonging to a local street gang. The investigation is continuing. At 10:39 a.m., a female and male who are boyfriend and girlfriend were in an argument in the 400 block of Duarte Road. The boyfriend began hitting and kicking the girlfriend. She sustained numerous visible injuries, but did not want paramedics to treat her. She also refused a Protection Order. The boyfriend fled the location prior to police arriving. A wanted person entry was issued in the law enforcement system for the suspect. The investigation is continuing.
March 28 At 1:04 a.m., an officer was dispatched to the 400 block of Duarte Road for an alarm call at a business. The officer arrived and found a large window had been smashed with an unknown object. The business owner checked the location and found that nothing had been taken. The investigation is continuing.

March 23 At about 9:13 p.m., officers responded to the intersection of Holly Avenue and Longden Avenue regarding a traffic collision with an unknown amount of injuries. Officers located the driver of the sole vehicle and noticed signs of drug use. During a search of the vehicle, officers located a glass smoking pipe and a glass jar with marijuana residue. The 23-year-old male from Arcadia was arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking. March 24
At approximately 5:10 a.m., officers responded to the 200 block of East Camino Real Avenue regarding an activation of an Arcadia Police Department
GPS tracker. Arcadia PD detectives had previously deployed decoy packages containing bait property and tracking devices to combat the increase in package thefts from residential areas. An investigation revealed two suspects had the stolen package, property, tracking device, as well as methamphetamine and additional stolen property in their vehicle. A 19-yearold female and a 26-yearold female, both from Canoga Park, were arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking.
Just after 10:09 p.m., an officer initiated consensual contact with a subject standing near the area of Foothill Boulevard and Santa Anita Avenue. During a consensual search of his person, the officer discovered the suspect was in possession of drug paraphernalia. A 19-year-old male from Van Nuys was arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking. March 25
At about 2:19 p.m., an officer responded to Albertson’s, 298 East Live Oak Avenue, regarding a petty theft report. An employee witnessed the suspect conceal two bottles of alcohol before exiting the store, failing to make payment.

At approximately 8:55 p.m., officers responded to the 200 block of Monte Place regarding suspicious circumstances. A resident came home to find an unknown male next to a vehicle in his driveway. An investigation revealed a burglary had occurred at the residence. Officers located the vehicle being driven by the suspect who failed to yield. A pursuit ensued, traveled to the vicinity of LAX, where the 32-year-old male from Paramount was ultimately arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking. March 26
Just after 3:31 p.m., an officer responded to Macy’s at the Santa Anita Mall, 400 South Baldwin Avenue, regarding a petty theft report. A loss prevention specialist witnessed the suspect conceal items in a shopping bag before leaving the store, failing to make payment. The 29-year-old male from La Puente was arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking. At about 11:57 p.m., officers responded to the 1000 block of East Camino Real Avenue regarding an activation of an Arcadia Police Department GPS tracker. An investigation revealed an 18-year-old male and a 19-year-old female, both from Arcadia, had removed the stolen property (and tracking device) from the package, placed the property in a bag and fled the scene on a bicycle. Both suspects were arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking.

FBI ‘Cracks’ San Bernardino Shooter’s iPhone Assistant Director of Los Angeles FBI David Bowdich made the following statement about the unlocking of the suspect’s iPhone: “The FBI cannot comment on the technical steps that were taken to obtain the contents of the county-issued iPhone, nor the identity of the third party that came forward as a result of the publicity generated by the court order. During the past week, to include the weekend, extensive testing of the iPhone was done by highly skilled personnel to ensure that the contents of the phone would remain intact once technical
methods were applied. The full exploitation of the phone and follow-up investigative steps are continuing. My law enforcement partners and I made a commitment to the victims of the Dec. 2 attack in San Bernardino and to the American people that no stone would be left unturned in this case... While we continue to explore the contents of the iPhone and other evidence, these questions may not be fully resolved, but I am satisfied that we have access to more answers than we did before and that the investigative process is moving forward.”

Reader Reacts to Home Owners Association Story Dear Editor: I have to laugh at this … where were all the No Arcadia people when us poor folk in Baja Arcadia were crying for help regarding the mansions. We were told, “that’s what you get for not having home owner’s associations.” Who thinks of this crap? We are living in a small “community of homes,” kids riding horses bareback up and down El Monte Ave. No, us poor folk never thought of, or most likely never heard of a home owner’s association. And now almighty No Arcadia is running around like Chicken Little, “the mansions are coming, the mansions are coming!” The horse is out of the barn folks, welcome to No Arcadia’s world. Blame who you will, I’ve lived in Arcadia 45 years and can almost count city council members on one hand. I gave up years ago when I attended a council meeting and was told, “English will always be the dominate writing on store fronts.” Hell, today I don’t know if I’m walking into

Sierra Madre Reader’s Response Regarding Utility User’s Tax
Dear Editor: RE: UUT, the difference between poverty and modest municipal respectability. We have lived here over 25 years. I can remember when we were so poor that when we needed to replace a police car we were reduced to considering a used car from another jurisdiction. I can remember when we could not afford to pay the bill of the mechanic who repaired the fire trucks. It is only about three years ago that our street got paved, work that should have been at least a decade earlier. I remember when we first got paramedics; I believe the last city in the county to do so. You know that normally over 75 percent of calls to the fire department are medically related. Previously we were served by volunteer EMTs. I remember that at the time a long-time volunteer fire
fighter/EMT was asked if he felt badly about the new paid paramedics; he replied that if he were to have a heart attack he would far rather have a trained paramedic come than an EMT like himself. Voting “no” on the UUT is like trying to “save” money by firing the gardener and letting the front yard go. You will lose far more in the loss in value of your property. Similarly if we “save” money by cutting out the services that make us safe and the type of community that other people admire we will pay the price many times over in the loss of property values. - Eric Olson SIERRA MADRE

Art On Palm Announces Spring Show For one day only, artists and makers will exhibit work at Art on Palm, Saturday, June 18, from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Altadena’s secluded and storied Wildwood Park, at 1421 E. Hall of Fame Baseball Cards By Gus Herrera Spring is in the air and that means baseball season is right around the corner. Despite the fact that today’s NBA and NFL may, arguably, be challenging baseball for the title of America’s favorite pastime, no other sport evokes the sense of nostalgia that baseball does. No matter how popular basketball and football might become, it is the rich history and countless traditions that will forever maintain a spot for baseball in the hearts of many Americans. One of the oldest and most prominent of these traditions is collecting and trading baseball cards. For 35 years, Hall of Fame (HOF) Baseball Cards in Arcadia has been a sanctuary for hobbyists, collectors, and local sports fans in general. Like most success stories, it all started with a dream. Owner Bob Newton, a huge baseball fan and card collector, began the business in 1981 out of his garage, “he would do mailorders, he would deal to locals. People would just come down the driveway on weekends, Saturdays or Sundays, and do business,” says his son Erik Newton, who makes up the second half of the fatherson duo that operates the business today. Eventually,

the passion project grew out of the driveway and in 1991 HOF Baseball Cards opened its Arcadia storefront where it still stands today. The business of baseball cards has seen its share of fluctuation over the years. In the 80s and early 90s business was booming, but shortly thereafter, in the late 90s and early 2000s, the industry took a hit, “probably 90 percent of the businesses that opened for this hobby closed down during that 10-year time period,” revealed Newton. HOF Baseball Cards was able to overcome these particular challenges thanks to its outstanding reputation within the community. What separates the store from its competition is the tight-knit family feel and its passionate, knowledgeable customer service. The Newtons are both
big-time sports fans and their commitment to running an honest business has earned them the community’s loyalty and support. Flash forward to today and the hobby is beginning to see a revival, “I personally have seen an influx of business in the last three to five years. I’ve seen a lot of people coming back that got out of it in the 90s, they want to check it out again … a lot of guys in their late 30s bring in their kids saying, ‘hey, this is what I used to do,’ trying to get them into it,” says Newton. Additionally, card companies have recently begun bolstering their products with autographs and memorabilia, “The piece of the game has really gotten people into it, because now they’re not just collecting a piece of cardboard with a player’s face on
it, they’re actually collecting something that that player used in a game, whether it be a piece of a bat or jersey, or a card that they signed,” says Newton. Not only do these new features bring fans and collectors closer to the game, they also provide for more instant value. Film-Making Starts in Fourth Grade at Beardslee Elementary School By may ruiz It is 2:45 p.m. on a Monday afternoon and students are getting picked up by their parents from Duarte Unified School District’s (DUSD) Beardslee Elementary School. For a group of fourth graders, however, it is not the end of their school day; they have another 90 minutes of class time. Yet these young kids do not need any coaxing to get started all over again. That is because they are learning something different and exciting so they eagerly await the arrival of Polo and Jessica, Hollywood professionals, who will be teaching the lesson – filmmaking. “We were told that cinematography isn’t a course that can be effectively taught beginning in high school,” begins Micah Green, fourth grade teacher at Beardslee and facilitator for the program. “It has to start in elementary grades, and build through the years. It was decided to add the course as an after-school program this year because we’re still trying it out. The idea is to have professionals teach the class while I watch. Next year it will be integrated into the curriculum as part
of English class. I can work with students and give them story ideas. I could be more involved in the scriptwriting process; Polo and Jessica can just come in for the filmmaking portion.” The cinematography class is the product of a partnership with the Latino Film Institute’s (LFI) Youth Cinema Project. LFI is the brainchild of actor Edward James Olmos who developed his commitment to education when he portrayed the role of Garfield High teacher Jaime Escalante. Through his foundation, he actively engages with a number of school districts in ensuring that Latino and AfricanAmerican students are not forgotten in the schools. Olmos began this program with two academicians who created the curriculum and planned a course of study for students. While new in DUSD, the film-making course has been in place in the elementary, middle and high schools in Santa Ana, Montebello, Bassett, Lynwood, and Pasadena districts. Green adds, “Mr. Olmos is the face of this film-making project. I believe it was he who approached previous DUSD superintendent,

To ensure that the program is continued, the district purchased a Canon handheld camera necessary for the course. While theyre not what would be used in a Hollywood movie, they’re more cost effective. Everyone is fully committed to go it all the way to high school.” For right now, Green’s group of about 23 students, from his fourth and fifth grade classes and from another teacher’s fourth grade class at Beardslee, meets after school every Monday and
Wednesday. Even without the added benefit of learning film-making, the class itself is a boost for teaching in general. Explains Green, “Even struggling writers get motivated because they don’t think they have to write; they feel they’re telling their story, which is a different mindset – it’s purposeful writing.” “It’s a messy process; these kids started out with no real skills – knowing nothing about writing scripts. We began with just basic writing about any topic they want to explore. They’re young kids so they write about things that are familiar to them – like a baseball game. They learn to write visually – what
the camera will see – that’s what’s important. Then they learn that for every scene they need a description of the environment and positioning so they add the direction. Lastly, they put in the dialogue between their characters. That was a huge part of the class and took about five months – from October through February. They now have a script and they’re in the filming process. All the movies will be made on campus so the topic has to be limited to what’s available to them, although I think we have some green screen so maybe they can add CGI later,” Green elaborates. The three-to-five-
minute film Green’s students create will be shown in the spring at a presentation with their families and members of the community as audience. According to Green even Creative Artists Agency (CAA), a major Hollywood talent agency, will have a representative watching the kids’ films. “It’s an opportunity to rise to the top; students can later find jobs in the movie industry. But even those who aren’t cut out for film-making will have an appreciation for story-telling,” Green concludes. Dr. Mucerino shares his thoughts, “I was struck recently by a CEO poll taken by IBM that identified creativity as the most important leadership quality. It made me think how lucky our children are here in Duarte because their “creativity quotient” (CQ) will be higher than their peers as a result of our efforts to promote creativity in our schools. After all, if creativity disappears, our music, art, and literature – our culture, will disappear with it. Creative children are the next generation of innovators, authors, entrepreneurs, software developers, diplomats, and hopefully, superintendents.”

For this twomonth period, a free shuttle van will run between Fish Canyon Falls Trailhead, located at 3901 Fish Canyon Road, and the Duarte/City of Hope Gold Line station, located along Duarte Road, just west of Highland Avenue every Saturday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Initially a shuttle van will be used to transport riders and dependent upon usage, a transit bus may be utilized in the near future. After years of limited accessibility and maintenance, the Duarte Fish Canyon Falls Trail is now safer, wider and more accessible and hikers
will be able to experience the 80-foot, three tiered waterfalls recently named the most beautiful falls in Southern California. However, Hikers and visitors are still warned to enter at their own risk. Even in the best of conditions, portions of the Duarte Fish Canyon Falls Trail are steep, rocky and narrow with very high cliffs and loose rocks. Ticks and poison oak are also sometimes prevalent. Whether one community member walks in the door or a dozen in the course of our day, we are here to serve you, and you will find capable, generous staff to greet you and show you the ropes. Over the last year, we have already produced 70 local volunteer produced programs for Monrovia cable, which you can see by tuning into KGEM channel 3 and KMAC channel 98 on Time Warner Cable. There is no guideline for the shows you produce except having the gumption to do so and something to say. You come in, take an orientation, and you can either shoot live in the studio, or create the next great American documentary. Your call. Shows done by local Monrovia residents this year range from an art show, to a gospel show, to shows about science and economics, to gardening. All produced right here by
folks who walked in the door. At a time when local is becoming more and more of a rare commodity, to have high quality, volunteer made television right here in Monrovia is truly a gem to be treasured. Okay, really, it is not free. It is paid for by franchise fees from the cable company and a few cent fee from your monthly cable bill and beyond that the studio space and our state of the art camera equipment, computers, software, and knowledgeable staff in residence are all subsidized by other production work our non-profit Community Media of the Foothills does, which is why the next community studio closest to our similar budget in So Cal, but without the same kind of external revenue, is not producing anything and has not upgraded equipment in years. or the past few weeks I have talked with you now and then about sorting my piles and cleaning my files. I uncovered an old column I wrote about Andy Rooney ruminating on “60 Minutes” about his many piles, files, and boxes of collected materials. Is it a common characteristic of writers and communicators? Or, is it just part of the process of aging? I do not know, but for me the process continues. Last week I threw away what seemed to be a ton of magazines I accumulated in just the last two years. It was a good feeling and it cleared space for me to accumulate new things. In them I uncovered some time lines I had cut out and kept as reference for future writings. Let me share some of the info with you. I had to ride three streetcars to get from home to my assignment in Wilkinsburg by 8 a.m. every morning. I was lucky enough to have a fellow student teacher who gave me a ride back to campus in time for our afternoon evaluation class. His car was old and temperamental but the radio worked just fine. So, to avoid thinking about the possibility of stalling out or getting creamed on the slippery streets, we sang along with that radio to tunes such as “All I Have To Do Is Dream” by the Everly Brothers, “The Purple People Eater” by Sheb Wooley, “It's Only Make Believe” by Conway Twitty, “Volare (Nel Blu Dipinto Di Blu)” by Domeico Modugno, and “Catch a Falling Star” by Perry Como. By the end of 1958, Elvis Presley had gone from king of rock and roll to Army private. I had gone from student teacher to full-fledged teacher in Michigan at one of the top paying school districts in the country. I earned $4,500 a year, just under the national average income of $4,707. A good place to stop rambling and go buy some stamps at 49 cents each and gas, while I can still get it for $3 a gallon.
