Does Light Rail Equate to Heavy Traffic?

Monrovia to Spend $12,000 to Study Traffic Flow Even before the Foothill Extension was officially open, there were serious traffic delays, most notably in Monrovia.

We first brought the issue to the attention of our readers and subsequently, City Manager Oliver Chi, two weeks ago, before the Gold Line started regular service.

The problem? Gridlock at

some key intersections.

The reason: inconsistent traffic light(s) control and defective crossing arms at Myrtle and Duarte.

The signal timing has raised the ire of commuters

for weeks.

The most visible traffic problems were at Myrtle Avenue, which provides access to the 210 Freeway, Santa Fe Middle School, and the new Gold Line Station.

Foothill Gold Line Construction Authority, along with the city traffic engineer of Monrovia, is studying the issue for alternate solutions.

Off-Duty LAPD Officer Shoots 2 Attempting to Burglarize His San Gabriel Home

By Staff Report Two suspected burglars were injured while allegedly attempting to burglarize a veteran Los Angeles Police Department officer’s San Gabriel home on Tuesday morning.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau detectives responded to the 600 block of Los Olivos Drive, San Gabriel, to assist San Gabriel Police Department personnel in investigating the circumstances surrounding four male burglary suspects. All four suspects were taken into custody, two of which were struck by gunfire.

LASD Homicide detectives have learned that San Gabriel Police Department (SGPD) personnel responded to the residence regarding a “man shot” at the location. Prior to SGPD’s arrival, the call was updated to state that the person who was shot was a burglary suspect.

When SGPD officers arrived, they saw one male suspect lying on the drive-

way of the residence suffering from gunshot wounds.

SGPD officers also learned that the victim and resident of the house was an off-duty Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) lieutenant.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the victim was home alone, sleeping, when he heard noises coming from inside of his house. Fearing for his life, the homeowner armed himself. During the burglary, the homeowner confronted two, unknown, burglary suspects inside his home. The suspects then fled through a kitchen window, which was also the initial point of entry. As the homeowner stood near the window, he saw one of the suspects reach for his waistband and turn towards him.

Fearing the suspect had armed himself and was going to seriously hurt or kill the homeowner, an officerinvolved shooting subsequently occurred.

Both suspects were struck by gunfire and fled the immediate scene. One of

the suspects was detained

by SGPD in the driveway of the residence, suffering from a gunshot wound to his upper torso.

The second suspect was also struck by gunfire in his upper torso and was driven to a local hospital by a third suspect. The driver then dropped off the wounded suspect and a fourth suspect at the hospital, and fled the scene.

During the course of the investigation, two suspects were detained at the local hospital and the driver of the car was detained at a separate location.

All four suspects have subsequently been arrested.

The identities and ages of the suspects are not confirmed at this time.

The off-duty LAPD lieutenant was not injured.

No suspect weapon was been recovered at this time.

The investigation is ongoing and there is no additional information available at this time.

Matt Denny’s Raises Over $30,000 for Childhood Cancer Research

St. Baldrick’s Day was celebrated in its usual manner at Matt Denny’s in Arcadia -- by shaving 110 heads on March 15. On Tuesday men women and children participated in what has become one of the largest fundraisers for cancer research.

According to the St. Baldrick’s Day foundation, the Matt Denny’s location alone raised more than $63,000 last year. Always one of the biggest events locally, the fire and police departments of the city are some of the biggest participants.

Local Superior Court Judge Bruce Marrs as well as Beacon Media’s Jose Luis Correa participated and raised large sums for the foundation.

Rose Hewit’s Del Sol Salon, which is right next door to Matt Denny’s, had 10 stylists on hand Tuesday who volunteered their time and talents for this fundraiser.

Duarte Sets Neighborhood Watch Meeting to Update Residents on Burglaries and Crime Prevention The City of Duarte, like every city in California is experiencing a spike in Part 1 Crimes; particularly in the area of property crimes. This trend is the exact opposite of the rest of the country that continues to enjoy historically low Part 1 Crimes rates.

What is behind this startling trend? The Duarte Public Safety Department and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department have set a community wide Neighborhood Watch meeting to keep the public up-to-date on what the departments are doing to collectively suppress, intervene, and prevent property crimes in our city. The meeting will be held Tuesday, March 29, at 6:30 p.m. at the Royal Oaks School Cafeteria, 2499 Royal Oaks Drive. The public is welcome and encouraged to attend.

The City of Duarte saw an 8.53 percent spike in Part 1 Crimes during 2015. Although it is still too early to pin this solely on the voter approved Proposition 47, public safety professionals are drawing a correlation between allowing non-violent offenders and drug users out of jail without a mandatory, funded treatment and supervision plan. In order to continue to be proactive in the city’s approach to this crime trend, the Public Safety Department is studying the introduction of another patrol

unit to the Sheriff’s Department contract and has also initiated talks with the City of Bradbury to possibly share the cost of this additional patrol car.

“The importance of the community’s role in helping to keep Duarte a safe place to live and work is vital,” said Villalobos. “We need the community’s help. Every Duarte neighborhood should be involved in Neighborhood Watch. It’s a program that works. We also want the public to know that if they have information about a crime, but may be concerned about ‘getting involved’, Duarte Public Safety has an Anonymous Tip hotline where they can leave a detailed message.”

The San Gabriel City Council Tuesday selected Chin Ho Liao as the city’s new mayor and Kevin Sawkins as the new vice mayor.

Each year the council reorganizes in March and selects a new mayor and vice mayor by a majority vote. Liao will replace outgoing Mayor Jason Pu. Liao said he has many goals during his term as mayor, including improving city infrastructure, funding a new police facility, televising council meetings, alleviating traffic congestion, fostering a small business community on Valley Boulevard and continuing to engage the community with events and programs.

“As mayor, I hope to help foster a sense of inclusiveness in our community and celebrate the diversities in San Gabriel,” Liao said. “I am honored to have the opportunity to partner with city leadership and staff members to accomplish several important goals during my year as mayor.”

ARCADIA March 8 Around 2:23 p.m., an officer responded to a residence in the 1800 block of Chantry Drive regarding a fraud report. The officer discovered an unknown suspect forged one of the victim’s checks and deposited it into an unknown account without his permission. The victim does not know how the suspect obtained his check.

Just after 7:13 p.m., an officer attempted to conduct an enforcement stop on a vehicle in the area of Live Oak Avenue and Santa Anita Avenue for speeding. The suspect failed to stop and a pursuit ensued.

The pursuit ended as officers surrounded the vehicle in the Kohl’s parking lot, 7279 Rosemead Boulevard. Upon contacting the driver, the 40-year-old male from Duarte admitted to driving under the influence of an alcoholic beverage. The suspect was arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking.

March 9

Shortly after 7:00 p.m., an officer responded to a

residence in the 900 block of West Huntington Drive regarding a domestic dispute.

An investigation revealed a physical altercation occurred between a boyfriend and girlfriend, resulting in the boyfriend pulling the victim’s hair and pushing her to the floor. The 41-year-old male from Arcadia was arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking.

At about 7:42 p.m., an officer responded to Pavilions, 745 West Naomi Avenue, regarding a commercial burglary report. The suspect was witnessed stealing a hand basket full of bottles of alcohol before exiting the store, failing to make payment.

The suspect is described as an Armenian male in his 30s. He fled in a grey sedan.

The investigation is ongoing.

March 10

At approximately 3:45 a.m., an officer responded to Go Gadget, 918 South Baldwin Avenue, regarding a commercial burglary report. Surveillance footage revealed an unidentified suspect smashed an exterior door and fled with cash and electronics in an unknown direction. The investigation is

ongoing.

Around 10:29 p.m., an officer responded to a parking lot at 1325 South Baldwin Avenue regarding a vehicle burglary report. The officer discovered an unknown suspect broke the passenger window of the vehicle and stole electronic devices. No suspects were seen and no witnesses were located.

March 11

At about 6:14 a.m., an officer responded to the 500 block of San Luis Rey Road regarding an activation of an Arcadia Police Department GPS tracker. Arcadia PD detectives had previously deployed decoy packages containing bait property and tracking devices to combat the increase in package thefts from residential areas.

An investigation revealed a 46-year-old male from Arcadia had the stolen package, property, and tracking device in his vehicle. The suspect was arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking.

Just after 8:34 a.m., an officer responded to the 900 block of Arcadia Avenue regarding a vehicle burglary report. The officer discov-

ered an unknown suspect smashed the front passenger window of the vehicle and stole the victim’s gift cards and cell phone. No suspects were seen and no witnesses were located, however, DNA was located at the scene. The investigation is ongoing.

March 12

Just after 9:30 a.m., an officer responded to the Arcadia Police Department front counter regarding a fraud report. An investigation revealed the suspect posed as the property owner by listing the residence for rent on www.rent.com. The victim, who was interested in the property, became suspicious when the suspect would not let him see the residence until the down payment was paid. Upon further investigation, the victim discovered it was a scam.

At approximately 12:01 p.m., an officer responded to a residence in the 000 block of West Palm Drive regarding a mail theft report. The officer discovered unknown suspect(s) pried open three mail boxes and stole the victims’ mail. No suspects were seen and no witnesses were located.

MONROVIA March 11 Theft from an Unlocked Vehicle. At 8:56 a.m., a theft from a vehicle was reported in the 200 block of S. Primrose. The victim had parked his vehicle and left it unlocked. Sometime overnight, an unknown suspect entered the vehicle and rummaged through it. A thumb drive and a pair of sunglasses were stolen. The investigation is continuing.

March 12

Driving Under the Influence – Suspect Arrested. At 4:36 a.m., an officer was on patrol in the 300 block of W. Foothill and observed a vehicle commit a vehicle code violation. He conducted a traffic stop and contacted the driver.

Through investigation, the officer determined the driver was intoxicated and driving under the influence. The suspect was arrested and held for a sobering period. The suspect was later released with a citation to appear in court on the charges.

Domestic Violence – Suspect Arrested. At 2:34 p.m., two subjects, a boyfriend and girlfriend, were arguing in the area of Palm and Primrose.

The male got angry and threw the female to the ground, causing scrapes on her arms.

He was arrested for domestic violence and a temporary restraining order was issued.

Traffic Collision/Driving Under the Influence – Suspect Arrested. At 7:27 p.m., officers responded to the area of Duarte Road and Magnolia for a non-injury traffic collision.

While speaking to the subjects involved, officers noticed the subject suspected of causing the collision appeared to be under the influence of alcohol. Field sobriety tests were administered and the driver was arrested for DUI. The driver was later released after a sobering period with a citation to appear in court.

Injury Traffic Collision At 8:06 p.m., officers

were dispatched to an injury traffic collision at Myrtle and Evergreen. A vehicle traveling east on Evergreen was struck by a vehicle traveling north on Myrtle that had failed to stop at a red signal. Three people in the vehicle traveling east suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene by Monrovia Fire Department personnel.

March 13

Fight in Progress/Assault With a Deadly Weapon.

At 1:23 a.m., Monrovia Fire Department personnel were at a business in the 400 block of S. Myrtle for a medical assist and observed a disturbance to the front of the location involving three adult male subjects. The subjects separated and left the location heading in different directions. The subjects came back together around the corner on Lemon.

A physical altercation began and the two suspects assaulted the victim. During the assault, he was pushed to the ground, kicked in the head and his head was struck against the pavement. The victim was taken to a hospital for treatment of multiple head injuries. The two suspects had fled the location. The investigation is continuing.

Hit and Run Traffic Collision. At 1:57 a.m., a hit and run traffic collision was reported in the 100 block of W. Colorado. The victim reported a vehicle had crashed into her parked car and fled. The suspect vehicle was described as a gold-colored, four-door vehicle. The investigation is continuing.

Vandalism. At 3:22 a.m., a resident in the 500 block of W. Duarte Road called police to report a vandalism that had just occurred. The victim was inside his residence when he heard noises outside.

If you have any education or have a college degree. This is basic economic 101 and simple math. The property values have gone down in the past eight months. Just go check it yourself. Please give a harmony back to City of Arcadia.

We have two councilmen (Tay and Chandler)

who want to scare our residents into thinking that the re-zoning will make us lose hundreds of thousands of dollars in our property values!

The KPCC (89.3, local) radio station website (link below) published a story about this issue and it said, “City Councilmember Sho Tay said some people opposed to bigger homes might feel differently if they understood their purpose for these residents. Tay said many Asian families want bigger homes because they live with extended family, like parents and in-laws, under one roof.

I took care of both of my parents before they passed away. I took care of them in

our home, where they lived from 1967, until their passing in 2011 and 2013. We did not put them in an “old folks home” and we did not need a bigger house to care for them. The notion of having a “bigger home” because some want to live with their extended families does not mean building a home that rivals a motel.

The population of Arcadia is 60 percent Asian, which means that 40 percent are from other cultures/ethnicities.

The United States and the City of Arcadia, was built on a melting pot of foreigners (and cultures) who came together to better our community and each other.

Families come here to raise their children, afford them the opportunity to attend great schools and live cohesively. Mr. Tay makes it clear, that Arcadia needs to “change” to accommodate a specific group of residents in the city. We can all live here and work together to build relationships the way

America and Arcadia was meant to be, not turn it into another country.

Mr. Tay says he doesn’t have anything to do with the flyers; “I don’t know why you say I am sending around Arcadia.” However, the flyers depict his name and title in the event. Councilmember Tay said “instead of having the city spending the money to print Chinese version, I volunteer to do the ‘Translation’ for them.”

My question would be, is he offering a translator for English-only speakers at his “private event?”

The flyer says, “most realtors estimate that the property value will drop up to 30 percent.” Really? Who are most of these realtors? I have spoken to trusted realtors in Arcadia, who have assured me, property values will not “drop” if the Zoning Review Committee Recommendations are approved.

All the cities surrounding Arcadia have zoning codes in place and their property values have not depreciated. Why would ours?

Although Mr. Tay claims he has nothing to do with the “flyers” being circulated, the flyers are clear that the event is being presented

Dear Editor: When you see the yard signs for the candidates in the upcoming Arcadia City Council election, one stands out saying “bring back Bob, a voice of reason.” This pertains to Bob Harbicht, who served previously for 20 years and now wants you to bring him back to a city once renowned as a “Community of Homes” to its present status as a “Community of Controversy.” In my opinion, his tenure on the council is one of the reasons for the mansionization, the under-developed business districts, the highest employee wages and benefits in the area, and the unreasonable taxes and bonds on our community.

Dear Editor, The City of Sierra Madre is spending taxpayer dollars on glossy mailings about Measure UUT omitting some inconvenient facts: (1) This would be a permanent 66% tax increase with no sunset clause. (2) The former Sierra Madre Chief of Police has stated this tax increase would not be enough to fully fund the Sierra Madre Police Department. (3) The city has run up $9.7 million in unfunded CalPERS pension liabilities for city employees - $6,754 in liabilities for every Sierra Madre household. (4) La Cañada has twice Sierra Madre’s population, but its 47 city employees cost each resident $160/year. Sierra Madre’s 212 city employees cost each of us $668/year.

This tax increase isn’t about “saving the police” or “saving the library”. The sheriffs are already patrolling Sierra Madre, and doing a great job. Don’t throw more of our tax dollars down the CalPERS rabbit hole – vote NO on Measure UUT. And write in Barry Gold for City Council. Barry doesn’t ignore inconvenient facts. Barry is committed to more efficient spending.

Simple math, if the future square footage of new homes will be reduced by 30 percent, you will see investors willing to pay for relatively a percentage (lower than 30 percent) less in their purchase price because of the reduced square feet on their intent construction. Yes, in short term, it will affect Arcadia home price. In long term, no one knows. I think those residents already living in one of those “McMansiona” may vote “yes” to the revised zoning regulation because their “McMansion” homes (historical) will be a limited source to pursue for Chinese to buy. So “McMansion” values will go up for sure! Old home prices will go down.

Border Cantos, a mustsee artistic collaboration between renowned photographer Richard Misrach and avant-garde composer Guillermo Galindo is now on exhibit at the San Jose Museum Art through July 31, 2016. Tale of ‘Charlotte’s Web’ Being Spun at Sierra Madre Playhouse

By Fran Syverson Bring your grandchildren, of course. But you will delight as much as they will in seeing “Charlotte’s Web,” albeit perhaps from a different perspective. After all, you probably read this timeless tale often to both them and their parents - your own kids.

You remember how it goes. Wilbur, the runt pig of the new litter, is saved by 8-year-old Fern. On the farm, he is spurned by the animals.

Finally he becomes best friends with Charlotte (what an unlikely pair!), who later saves him by spinning words - some pig, terrific, humble into her web. Townsfolks are entranced with the “miracle” that keeps Wilbur from being sent off to the butcher.

All it takes is a bit of imagination for the humans onstage to become almost believable as the animals they represent - Wilbur, the runt pig, or Charlotte, the crafty spider. For Wilbur, a snout and ears do the trick, for the geese, fluttery feathery wings.

Templeton is all gray with a very long tail befitting a rat. To convey the animals’ personas, Tanya Apuya designed these minimalistic costumes. And

they have to function through fast-changes galore, as most actors play multiple roles.

The fast-moving action and humor will capture the audience, both the young and those not-so-much.

Children in the audience surely would love to romp on the stage with its faux-farm setting. It is rustic and woodsy. Brightly painted boards, slightly atilt and reaching to the roof, define the walls. Steps lead to the platform where Charlotte hangs out by her gigantic web.

The scene easily transforms into the county fair where Wilbur hopes to win a blue ribbon. It is all designed by Keiko Moreno.

More than 3,300 young students will see “Charlotte’s Web” on weekday field trips from 39 schools of nine school districts. A pre-show workshop and a post-show discussion will enhance both their enjoyment and their educational experience. The lobby display arranged by Diane Siegel includes drawings, tiles with web designs, and little essays by students attending this neatly packaged theatrical program.

A Fiber Arts Party, a Farm-Fresh Egg Hunt,

Wilbur’s Denim and Daisies Tea and Parade, and Fern’s Farm Animals are special Sunday attractions at the Playhouse. For dates and further information, go to SierraMadrePlayhouse.org. Children are invited to bring their favorite stuffed animals to all shows.

All roles are double-cast, and many of the actors play multiple roles. The opening matinee found Tara Bopp as Charlotte and Sonny James Calvano as Wilbur in excellent performances of the leads.

Multiple spots were well-handled by Megan Captaine, Ryland Dodge, Jackson Kendall, and Hayley Perkins. At other times, Andrew Carter will play Wilbur and Claudia Zielke will become Charlotte. Jennifer Kersey, Megan McIver, Peter Pasco, and Matt Severyn will play the multiples.

Director Gary Lamb has graced this modern fairy tale with poignant touches about friendship, loyalty, and the cycle of life. Even in the darker moments where Wilbur and, later, Charlotte face up to the reality of death, the story shows how love, hope, and friendship can survive.

An Environmental Education Fair at to the Arboretum

By Jonathan Tsou Last Saturday, the Arboretum hosted the 37th Annual Los Angeles Environmental Education Fair.

The point of the annual event is to get students from around Los Angeles County thinking about their environment and the many things that they do to care for it. The annual tradition was founded in 1991 by Dr. Jane Goodall.

The event with more than 60 exhibits, hosted by Arcadia Unified School District, Los Angeles Unified School District, and numerous non-profit environmental organizations, addressed issues such as drought-tolerant lawn alternatives, caring for trees during drought season, and understanding the importance of biodiversity.

Gary Wilkerson, one of the senior members of the Arboretum's standing committee, indicated that the two primary goals of the event are to "celebrate the works of many agencies in

promoting environmental education" and "to underline the awareness of a sustainable environment and stewardship." He also said that he hopes that the more people bump into these ideas, the more people will remember to take renewable bags to the market and to plant-drought resistance plants when they go home.

Arcadia High School was well represented at the event, with hundreds of students attending the event and hosting booths.

Students created many interactive games by incorporating what they learned in class, giving an educational and hands-on opportunity to those who attended the event. Jorge Munoz, one of the Environmental Science teachers who helped with the event, feels that the event helped his students put a face to the things they learn in class while them out of the classroom and seeing the environment.

TreePeople, a nonprofit environmental advocacy group that promotes sustainable urban ecosystems, gave a presentation about the importance of "Caring for Trees in the Drought." Reptacular Animals, which is Southern California's largest private zoo, presented a hands-on introduction of many exotic reptiles. The Arboretum also hosted a drought-tolerant landscaping at its own Crescent Farm. They gave considerations regarding the use of plants, microclimates, soils, mulches, and watering techniques.

Founded in 2000 with the belief that “everyone deserves a chance to discover the joys of music and theatre,” the company creates opportunities for local youth and adults to participate in high-quality theatre productions led by a passionate, experienced group of professionals and volunteers.

In the face of financial hardship, school’s arts programs are, unfortunately, the first things to go. Add in the fact that private classes and programs are seldom affordable, and what you are left with is a recreational landscape for local youth that is devoid of artistic outlets. Since its inception, Centre Stage has worked to fill this void by providing affordable after-school programs, seasonal productions, private classes, and a summer camp. For their main-stage musical productions there is a minimum tuition fee, but no one will ever be turned down for financial reasons, “part of our mission is to keep it very af-

For most families they don't even need scholarships because we try to make it affordable by having fundraisers throughout the year to keep the overhead costs low,” explains Keely Milliken, Centre Stage’s founder.

A true professional, with 17 years of experience in the music and theatre industries, Milliken’s passion is fueled, in part, by her local roots, “One reason I wanted to start Centre Stage

is because I grew up in Monrovia and there weren't a lot of Broadway opportunities. Basically you only had church to sing in, there were not a lot of theatre-related opportunities. I wanted to start the company here in Monrovia so kids like me could discover outlets for music and theatre,” she describes.

A graduate of Azusa Pacific University and a former member of the internationally renowned Citrus Singers, Milliken worked as

a teacher for several local schools, including Monrovia High School, before starting the non-profit. Fast-forward 16 years later and Centre Stage’s impact is not limited to Monrovia, “recently we started branching out to other areas. We started a program at Fairgrove Academy in La Puente. It’s a lower income school and they couldn't afford a theatre program, so we came in and, for a nominal fee, put on a show. We got to choose 40 kids from the school, they came in and auditioned.

They got the Broadway experience at their school,

which normally does not have a program like that.

We are trying to find more ways to branch out like this and reach more kids who may not get the opportunity to be in music and theatre,” describes Milliken.

A little closer to home, Centre Stage has used this same formula to achieve a more tangible form of success. By incorporating a similar program at Arcadia Christian they inspired the school to take matters into their own hands, “it got to the point where they got their own program going, so now they're doing it them-

Kaiser Picks Pasadena for School of Medicine Kaiser Permanente announced Wednesday, March 9, that the campus for its School of Medicine will be located in the City of Pasadena.

The site for the school, on land Kaiser Permanente already owns, is located in central Pasadena. The community was chosen because of its “proximity to affordable housing, public transit, and major freeways.”

“The highly livable city of Pasadena is culturally and economically diverse, and is within a few miles of other major Kaiser Permanente facilities where much of the students’ education will take place,” according to their department of public relations.

The School of Medicine campus will be located adjacent to the Kaiser Permanente Department of Research &

Evaluation.

New Artwork Unveiled at Monrovia Public Library Last Friday, March 11, the library hosted a community celebration to unveil our newest piece of public art, entitled “Sunday Drive.” The artwork, which is an acrylic mural painted onto the bindings of recycled books, was a project led by Youth Services Librarian Annette Simpson, and was made possible through the support of many community partners, including the Art in Public Places Committee, the Monrovia Library Foundation, the Friends of the Monrovia Pub-

who created the new mural, has always been attracted to painting and drawing on

various recycled items, from record covers to books. His work has been exhibited throughout the United States and internationally. And as the attached picture illustrates, the event was terrific and the mural is quite fantastic! Example: Old Town’s newest offering, “Parchment,” is a coffee shop, not a paper store (Excellent coffee, by the way). The Dollmakers’ Kattywompus is not a crazy doll store, but a crazy toy store, and Puff Monkey is definitely not a

vape shop. I’ll go on…. Sow House is not a pork restaurant (it’s a farm to table style restaurant), Salad Bistro is way more than salads (check out the sandwiches and pasta!), and Six 2 Six is a cool novelty store, not a cell phone outlet. As for book covers, the racy covers on the outside of my dad’s Mickey Spillane paperbacks, as I discovered when I grew up, belied the G- rated content inside. Point is, everything is not as it seems at first glance. A little time and a little investigation go a

long way.

And I’m happy to announce the almost-unveiling of another mystery: Inside the brown paper covering the windows of Le Gourmand (across from the Krikorian on Myrtle) something is stirring. I’ve been peeking and peering between the tears in the paper, watching for lights and activity. I had almost lost hope until this morning when I ran into Mandy Bagtas, the owner, and he assured me that all is well. Le Gourmand, under the same name

Sean Sullivan, public services manager, is recommending that Gibson Transportation Consulting Inc. be hired for professional services associated with the impact of the Gold Line on the traffic flow at key intersections in an amount not to exceed $12,000.

For $12,000 the city will get this from Gibson: a) Conducting field observations at each intersection. b) Collecting morning and evening peak-hour traffic volumes. c) Documenting issues that may be caused by the design of the intersection, signal timing, and railroad crossing. d) Creating a report with recommendations to address these issues.

Staff was directed to work with the city traffic engineer to assess the intersections of Duarte Road and Myrtle Avenue, Magnolia Avenue, and Peck Road once the train ridership was active. On March 5, the Gold Line light rail service opened for customer service along the San Gabriel Valley from Arcadia to Azusa. In the weeks leading up to the opening and since service has commenced,

staff has become aware of significant traffic issues related to train crossings and traffic signal coordination.

Similar issues related to the Gold Line have arisen in neighboring cities. Staff is meeting with representatives from Metro, California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), Los Angeles County, and cities within the San Gabriel Valley to discuss and address these issues.

Foothill Construction Authority Spokesperson Lisa Levy Busch says: “An extra rail car will be added to four Gold Line

trains during weekday peak hours in the morning and evening to help with crowds. We know the trains have sometimes been very crowded during the height of the rush hour and hopefully this will take the edge off. Metro staff will be monitoring ridership so that the longer trains can be deployed when the most needed.

“Metro will soon be putting parking attendants at APU/Citrus College, Azusa Downtown, and Irwindale stations between 5 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. on weekdays. The attendants will be helping patrons find spots at each station or direct them to another station where there is parking available. And to answer your next question: yes, the attendants will be talking to one another to monitor space availability at the garages.

The attendants will also have another key role: prevent people who are not using Metro from parking in Metro spaces in the garages. In addition, attendants will be posting signs when stations fill and will have direction handouts to help patrons find the other garages.”

ince on March 17 everyone is either Irish or pretends to be, I will resurrect some of me Irish jokes so ye can enjoy a wee bit of laughter: - Murphy: Murphy was staggering home with a pint of booze in his back pocket when he slipped and fell heavily. Struggling to his feet, he felt something wet running down the back of his leg. "Please, Lord," he implored, "let it be blood!"

- Paddy: Paddy was driving down the street in a sweat because he had an important meeting and could not find a parking space. Looking up to heaven he said, "Lord, take pity on me. If you find me a parking place I will go to Mass every Sunday for the rest of me life and give up me Irish whiskey!" Miraculously, a parking place appeared.

To the amazement of Patrick and Michael, a genie did come forth.

This particular genie, however, stated that he could deliver only one wish, not the standard three. Without giving it much thought, Patrick blurted out, "turn the entire ocean into Guinness beer."

The genie clapped his hands with a deafening crash, and immediately the entire sea turned into the finest brew ever sampled by mortals. Simultaneously the genie vanished.

Only the gentle lapping of Guinness on the hull broke the stillness. Patrick smiled contentedly. Michael glared at him disgustedly.

After a long, tension filled moment he spoke. "Nice going Patrick. Now we're going to have to pee in the boat."

In Honor of Women’s History Month – A Tribute to My Greatest Mentor As I reflect on the wonderful women mentors over the course of my life, my mother is without a doubt the one person who has made the most impact on my life. My mom, Elizabeth, was a true example of strength, compassion, and resiliency. Mom raised three girls by herself; me included, and was “no nonsense” in raising us. She was born and raised in Birmingham, Ala. during a time when “Negros” were separated from everything. My mom’s family was forced to have her leave home at 17-years-old

due to fear for her safety. As my mom’s family was told

by Sheriff Bull Connor, “she was too uppity and didn’t know her place.” So she was sent to live with relatives in Baltimore.

After my mom and dad divorced, we moved to California. She raised her three girls to be leaders and push the boundaries with respect, but never allow others to shape who or what you can accomplish. She often worked two to three jobs to take care of us and seldom showed stress. It is amazing to me that we always had

people in our house and no one was refused a meal or a couch to sleep on. I do not know how she did it.

I am grateful beyond words for my mom and I miss her every day. She lost her battle with lung cancer in 2001. Whenever, I get tired, wary or discouraged, I immediately think of my mom. I shake it off and remember her words, “To much is given, much is expected, get in there and make it happen.”

Sheriff Warns Parents of Nude ‘Selfies’ Being Sent Over Internet This week, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) Human Trafficking Bureau (HTB) held a news conference and provided reporters a comprehensive update on the horrific nature and the sheer number of human trafficking cases that involve children and young teens taking nude photos of themselves and sending them over the internet.

What may have started as a copycat of an online trend is now manifesting itself as a nexus between our young teens and the predators who seek to exploit them for profit.

In 2015, the LASD HTB and its co-located partners in the Los Angeles Regional Taskforce on Human Trafficking investigated 519 cases that involved nude photos of girls and boys as young as 8 years old. These photos are forever circulating in cyberspace. Of these cases, one in four photos involved young teenage girls and boys who had taken nude “selfies,” perhaps as an “act of love” for a boyfriend or girlfriend, an act of teenage rebellion, a cry for attention, or did so because they were duped by someone posing as a friend or teenage acquaintance.

All too often, these images end up on the internet or in the hands of child predators, some of whom actually make contact with these children with the specific intent of luring them into a relationship, extorting them for additional photos and videos, or in some cases, even money. These cases

slice across all socio-economic and racial lines.

Year to date in 2016, in just a two-and-a-half month period of time, LASD HTB detectives investigated 81 cases involving nude and compromising photographs and videos of our young children and teens on the internet. The quantity of these images number in the thousands. Online forums and websites that market themselves as platforms where these images “disappear” are very misleading; let me be clear; these images never disappear. They are forever present on the internet, viewed and traded like baseball cards by child molesters, predators and extortionists, many of whom re-post these nude images on file sharing sites, exponentially exposing these inappropriate and illegal images of a young girl or boy. Afterward, our young victims often fall into deep depression and have suicidal feelings which stay with them for a lifetime.

Our youth need public figures and parents to work together and provide information to our families about the high-risk consequences of inappropriate photo sharing. We need and want to partner with high profile individuals whose form of self-expression is not blatantly a form of commerce, but a demonstration of the importance of setting goals and teaching our children, but especially our girls, that they have more to offer than just their bodies.

Parents should also understand the legal jeop-

ardy for teens sending nude photos over the internet or cellular device. Directing someone to make, send, or possess these photos is both a federal and state crime.

Every day, our Human Trafficking Bureau sees the tragic realization for parents who learn of their child mimicking what they see in the media, or buying into the myth that their online accounts are truly private, truly secure, that they can control the access of the increasingly sophisticated criminal enterprises who hunt for their next victims on the very platforms parents may believe are just for fun.

I encourage parents to learn more about the consequences of sexting and sharing nude photographs, and the threat online predators pose to our children by contacting the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (www. missingkids.org), the Los Angeles Regional Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, or the LASD Human Trafficking Bureau’s Sexual Assault Felony Enforcement (SAFE) team, at (323) 526-5156. In addition, the SAFE Team can assist victims and families and provide valuable direction in mitigating some of the issues that may arise if their child has already engaged in this conduct. Let us do this for our children, and rest assured, the detectives from our LASD HTB will pursue, to the fullest extent of the law, predators engaged in online sexual exploitation of our children.

The project consists in the installation of an eight (8) feet wide synthetic pedestrian trail, approximate 1/3 of a mile, replacement of existing restroom, renovation of existing basketball court, construction of a new sand volleyball, new landscape and irrigation other related work as described in the Plans, Specifications, and Contract Documents, by this reference, made a part hereof.

Duarte Girls’ Basketball Eliminated from CIF Playoffs Photos by trevor stamp Last Saturday, March 12, the Lady Falcon’s basketball squad from Duarte High School fell in the second round of the CIF Southern Section Playoffs to St. Anthony, 68-43. The game started out close, with Duarte only down four points at the conclusion of the first half, 24-28. Unfortunately, St. Anthony came out firing in the second half and pulled off the 25-point victory.

An Interview With Steven Bash

By Jacob Bigley We at Beacon Media sat down with Steven Bash, attorney and owner of Bash Entertainment/Bash Boxing Inc., a full service sports and entertainment company providing professional athletes and companies legal representation as well as management, marketing and promotional services.

In an effort to bring back the "good old days" of professional boxing and give young fighters an opportunity to showcase their talents, Bash Boxing is involved with Art of Boxing Promotions in the organization and promotion of live boxing events. Together, Bash Boxing and Art of Boxing Promotions have organized over 15 professional boxing shows. Their current projects include Hollywood Fight Night at the Florentine Gardens, War At Woodland Hills at the Warner Center Marriott, and Glendale Glory at the Glendale Civic Auditorium.

BMI: How did you first get into boxing?

SB: About 12 years ago, a professional boxer came into my law office and asked me to represent him in a legal dis-

pute with his promoter at the time, Don King. I resolved the dispute and when the boxer came to pick up his check, he asked me to become his manager. I always liked sports so I agreed. That boxer became a World Champion and it just kept snowballing from there.

BMI: What is your favorite aspect about the sport?

SB: As representative of boxers, there is nothing more rewarding than being involved with a boxer or MMA fighter that climbs the latter of the sport and achieves its highest level. As a promoter of the events, I mostly enjoy seeing a packed house of fans and feeling the energy of the crowd during an event that took a tremendous amount of work to put on. Personally, my favorite aspect has been the opportunity to travel to different parts of the world for boxing events.

BMI: How did "Bash Boxing" get started?

SB: After being lucky to represent some World Champions as an attorney and manager, I started to represent younger fighters who needed a platform to build their careers on the local level. There were few options for these

fighters in the L.A. area and so Bash Boxing came to existence. 30-plus shows later, we keep bringing a fun and entertaining live sporting event option to the local fight fans.

BMI: What would you ultimately like to see "Bash Boxing" become?

SB: Bash Boxing has always been my “hobby” (while often times taking up a great deal of my time). We have gone from two to three events per year to 10 to 12, including boxing and MMA. Certainly the platform has the potential to expand beyond the local level but ultimately, these shows are done for fun. So long as demand from the local communities and boxing industry continues, we will keep putting on shows for people to enjoy.

BMI: What are your thoughts on MMA? SB: I have been fortunate to be involved with some of the bigger names in MMA like Ronda Rousey and Fedor Emelianenko and have represented MMA promoters. And I enjoy the sport and have recently partnered with Lights Out Promotions and Combate Americas on some great MMA shows in the San Fernando

Valley and the L.A. Area. I think the sport will continue to grow and for good reason.

BMI: Does MMA threaten boxing's popularity? If so, what is your approach to keep "BashBoxing" competitive?

SB: After doing both MMA and boxing shows, I feel the fans are somewhat different and that both MMA and boxing have a place in the hearts of combat sports fans.

I don’t think neither sport threatens each other at this point but that both sports will continue to co-exist and maintain their popularity.

BMI: What is your relationship with the fighters?

SB: My relationship with the fighters used to be a lot closer when I took more of a management role in their careers. But as my own two kids become older, I have made sure to focus on their development and limit my involvement with the fighters. With that said, I still am a fan first and foremost and always like to help fighters in any way I can.

BMI: What is the process to get an event up and running and how do you maintain a constant schedule?

SB: I have always com-

pared the organization of a boxing or MMA event to throwing a huge wedding … except nobody brings you any presents and there is no honeymoon. You have to deal with the venue, the entertainment, the food, the production, getting the word out, and all other aspects of any live event.

Then there is a tremendous amount of work involved in with getting the fighters matched, licensed, and ready to go on fight night. There is a constant schedule and a lot of work involved by some very dedicated people. And then a few days of rest and on to the next show.

BMI: What is Steve Bash's next step to grow "Bash Boxing"?

SB: That’s a tough question because the company has pretty much grown organically without a huge desire to keep climbing any particular ladder. But as the business grows and we do more shows, more often, the next step would certainly have to be getting some additional staff so I could do less work!

BMI: Explain Steve Bash's love for the sport and his business...

SB: I have always felt

there are two sports, boxing and hockey, that need to be seen live and in person to truly appreciate the speed, force, and true nature and beauty of their respective sports. Many folks have seen a boxing event on TV but have never experienced it live. I fell in love with the sport of boxing when I first saw it live and I fell in love with the business when I felt I could make a difference in the careers of fighters and how events are organized. I love when people that have never gone to a live event come up to me and tell me how awesome and enjoyable their experience was.

There is just something about that live experience in boxing that cannot compare to most sports. The business part is actually a love/hate relationship. There are some really good folks and some not so good folks in the business of boxing. I have been fortunate to make some very close friends in the business and work with great people. And at the end of the day, you have to love and enjoy what you do and who you work with. And when it comes to boxing and MMA, I simply love and enjoy it.

El Monte National Little League Opening Day March 12 marked the opening day for the youth of El Monte National Little League (EMNLL). A chance of rain did not deter over 100 little leaguers on more than 20 teams from breaking out their bats and stepping out on the diamond during the opening day of EMNLL to start the three-month league season. The league consists of T-Ballers to Majors.

Parents and volunteers

were on the field setting up before 8 a.m. This day takes months of planning for the EMNLL board of directors.

Each team from each division was given a booth to man and operate where they had to sell food, candy, hold games, and drinks. This is a way for the league to raise money as well as the individual teams get to keep a portion of the proceeds to support the kids.

Opening day created an upbeat atmosphere where coaches and volunteers did a great job of putting their younger players in the spotlight. Each team, starting with T-Ball, was called up to march in front of the city council and families during the annual parade. This year each player will remember the Little League Pledge: “Win or lose, I will always do my best.”
